Jørgen Valentin Sonne (June 24, 1801 - 1890) was a Danish Academy-trained painter, who was basically a genre painter, although part of the Golden Age of Danish art. He painted numerous battle scenes and enjoyed military life. Through his travels he also produced mountain landscapes, vistas of rural life and scenes, esp. Italian settings.

Jørgen V. Sonne - The Morning After the Battle of Isted 25 July 1850

Danish poet and psalmist, B.S. Ingemann, was born May 28, 1789 (d. 1862). He wrote many hymns that are still being sung in Danish churches and at gatherings to this day.

Here is a painting by Jørgen Valentin Sonne of Ingemann receiving a golden horn acquired through a collection among Danish women for his 70th birthday. Now that is the way to celebrate a poet!

Here is a rough translation of one of my favorite evening songs of his:

Yesterday was the Eve of St. John, and one of the folk beliefs of Midsummer’s Night is that if a sick person sleeps on the grave of a saint, they will be cured.
