Jäger wasn't exactly what one would call observant most of the time, but there were a few exceptions - he payed unusually close attention to Jack and Sutton.

"Hey," he had purposefully sought out Lizzie at the lake, and waited until she seemed to be separated from her friend - he didn't need them both ganging up on him. "What's your deal? I've seen you hanging out with my brother."

Jack hugged Jäger back just as tightly, rubbing on his back gently. He hesitated as his brother mentioned "that girl," knowing he was talking about Lizzie. "Nothing's going on with me and Lizzie," he said, shaking his head. "We're not like you and Sutton. We're just friends." He didn't think it was comparable. He didn't want to argue, though, so he just sat back against the wall. "I know you can take care of yourself. I guess . . . I have a hard time letting go. Especially when I promised myself when we were little that I'd never let you go."

Jäger took a deep, shaky breath as Jack cupped his face. Part of him wanted to pull away and snap at him, but the other part wanted so desperate to continue to be loved by him that he stayed put. He did his best to stay quiet and focused as his brother actually opened up to him, but only got about halfway before leaning forward and burying his face in Jack's neck, hugging him tightly. "I love you so much I don't want to make your life hard," he mumbled, though he was pretty sure Jack could hear him anyway. "I worry too; I worry about that girl you've been hanging out with, but I didn't want to say anything because you were so upset about me and Sutton." He sniffled, finally pulling back again. "I want you to be less tired, and more happy. I know... I know I can't stop you from worrying. But I promise, I learned some stuff along the way growing up. I can take care of myself, but I'm always going to need your help, too."

"Yeah, Fern. Apparently this guy Auggie remembers me from school? Ran into him the other day. That was weird." Jack paused. "That new girl is Lizzie. She bought a lot of stuffed animals at the festival and needed help carrying them. Now she keeps popping up everywhere." Not that he minded. He glanced down as Jäger bit his wrist. It reminded him of how he'd chewed on Jack's fingers while he was teething, because of course their parents hadn't bought any teething tools. "Sure, but I don't know how good I'll be at it."

"I know," he immediately nestled into Jack's side, staying quiet for a few moments. "You have other friends though. Fern. That new girl. I don't know her name, I haven't met her. But I've seen you talking to her." While not outwardly nosy, Jäger was always incredibly tuned in to what Jack was doing. "Sutton knows I'm here with you for part of the day. I told her I'd go find her when we were done hanging out." Yag lifted up Jack's hand to take a small bite out of the side of his wrist. "I want you to have fun before I go see her."

Jäger didn't answer her for a very long moment, just sort of played with some stray threads hanging off his sweater. "Jack and I only have each other. He's always taken care of me, and I've always sort of been his top priority. So he doesn't have a lot of friends, and I feel like that's my fault. So I want him to make friends - I just want them to be real and care about him."

Lizzie rolled her eyes. "Same difference." She tilted her head at the other's words. "Worry 'bout what?"

"Jack isn't mean to anyone." Jäger clarified, but shrugged. "You've been talking to me for like five minutes; but I'm really protective of the people I care about, like Jack and Sutton... But at least you seem to get where I'm coming from. I don't want him not to have friends, I just... worry."

She shrugged, not bothered if he thought that was weird or not. That was how you sealed a promise, simple as that. "A lotta guys," she answered in full seriousness. "But I wouldn't kill Jack. I like him. And like I said, he's not mean to me, so he wouldn't deserve it." Lizzie shook her head at Jäger calling himself intense. "You seem normal to me. I'd do the same thing to anyone Winnie was hanging out with."

Pursing his lips, Jäger looked from Lizzie's face to her hand. He didn't really trust her, but he wasn't sure how Jack would feel if he pushed her too hard and caused her to back out of his life, either. "Of course he does - how else would he treat you?" The comment had Yag frowning slightly, but he slowly reached out to lock his pinky with hers. "I just don't want him getting hurt. You have a sibling or something that you feel that way about? Like you'd do anything for them?"

Lizzie shook her head. "Nah, not with him. He treats me normal." Sure, there were people she loved to fuck with, but she genuinely enjoyed the time she spent with Jack. "I don't wanna hurt him, promise." She held out her pinky to Jäger.

"That's weird. I've never seen that before." Yag wrinkled his nose, but mimicked her anyway. "Why would people treat you like you're crazy? Did you kill a guy? That's impressive, not crazy. Unless you want to kill Jack, in which case, not cool." He took a deep breath. "I know I can sort of be.... intense. I just love Jack more than anything. I want him to have good things."

She leaned in to kiss her fist in demonstration. At the question Lizzie nodded. "Yep. Winnie. I'd do anything for her." And she had. There was nothing Lizzie wouldn't do for the other girl. "So I get it, it's no biggie."

Lizzie stopped mid lick on her snow cone, brows bunched in confusion. She saw him with Jack a lot...so that must be who he meant. "Deal? What deal? We just hang out. He's cool. Guess I know which brother's better." With a grimace she lowered her treat to glare at Jäger, for interrupting her blissful peace in frozen snack heaven. "That it?"
