"Yeah, Fern. Apparently this guy Auggie remembers me from school? Ran into him the other day. That was weird." Jack paused. "That new girl is Lizzie. She bought a lot of stuffed animals at the festival and needed help carrying them. Now she keeps popping up everywhere." Not that he minded. He glanced down as Jäger bit his wrist. It reminded him of how he'd chewed on Jack's fingers while he was teething, because of course their parents hadn't bought any teething tools. "Sure, but I don't know how good I'll be at it."
"I know," he immediately nestled into Jack's side, staying quiet for a few moments. "You have other friends though. Fern. That new girl. I don't know her name, I haven't met her. But I've seen you talking to her." While not outwardly nosy, Jäger was always incredibly tuned in to what Jack was doing. "Sutton knows I'm here with you for part of the day. I told her I'd go find her when we were done hanging out." Yag lifted up Jack's hand to take a small bite out of the side of his wrist. "I want you to have fun before I go see her."

Jack took her arm, holding it lightly as they walked. "Yeah, Yag is here with his . . . girlfriend." He tripped over the word a bit, grimacing slightly. He was trying, he really was, but it still worried him. When he looked over at the two, though, they seemed happy. It was nice to see Jäger laugh. Genuinely laugh.
"sounds like ice cream is our trajectory, then." she returned his smile warmly, her arm extending out for him to take if he so chose. "c'mon. you can be my date for a couple minutes until someone else snags your attention. is your baby brother here?"

"That makes sense, I guess," Jack said. "So do I get a shovel?" he asked. "Or do I have to dig with my hands?" He smiled faintly.
She paused in her building to purse her lips and assess the sand mound. "Probably not," she admitted. Lizzie pointed to the bucket not too far from her. "But that's what that's for! Plus you gotta dig for the best sand," she waved a small shovel around. Lizzie may or may not haven taken it from some kids.

"Yeah, I'm wearing it under this," Jack said, gesturing to his clothes. "But I could go for some ice cream." He smiled briefly. He felt comfortable enough around Fern to do so, which was a rare thing.
"just watching, huh?" fern glanced out around the crowd once more, her hands coming to clasp behind her back. "did you bring a swimsuit? orrrrr would you be interested in ice cream?"

"I'm literally here for you," Jack said with a faint smirk. "What else am I gonna do?" He shook his head, draping his arm across Jäger's shoulders, giving him a little squeeze. "Let's grab a couple beers and burgers. We can sit by the lake until Sutton finds you." He expected Sutton to drag Yag away sooner rather than later, and he tried not to feel annoyed by that. She had every right to spend time with Yag. Jack needed to get used to it.
It was starting to come to Yag's attention that maybe Jack didn't really do much outside of spend time with him and work. There was part of his stomach that twisted uncomfortably know that it was all his fault; because he had been so needy and desperate for attention, Jack had no choice but to give all his to Jäger. Never mind the fact that it was actually their parents fault.
"Yeah, I could eat," his head bobbed in excitement. "Did you wanna get something to drink too? I heard they have margaritas, but I can't imagine they're very good." He paused, looking at Jack again. "You don't have to stay for the whole time. Just spend a couple of hours with me?"

Jack glanced around as Lizzie waved at him, for a moment thinking she might be waving to someone else. Hesitating, he took a beat before walking over to where she was kneeling in the sand. "Is there enough sand for all of that?" he asked curiously, moving to sit beside her even so.
Sitting in the sand, Lizzie was trying to make a sandcastle when she noticed Jack nearby. Waving excitedly, she urged him to join her. "Wanna build a sandcastle with me? I'm thinking it should have a big ass mote and like lots and lots of towers. For all the prisoners."

"Oh, hi," Jack said with a slight smile when Fern appeared at his side. He shrugged at the question. "Yag brought me to force me to have fun I think, but I'm not sure I know how to do that, honestly. So I'm just . . . watching."

just like always, fern beamed when she spotted jack, falling to stand beside him, but this time keeping her hands to herself. "hi, sweetheart," she cooed, flashing him a private smile. "it's nice to see you out and about again. are you having fun, or are you watching out for jäger to make sure he doesn't cause mischief?"

Jack hadn't planned on coming to the lake party, but Jäger was still on this kick of making him have fun of some kind. Jack wasn't opposed to it, he just didn't see the point. Why did he need to have fun? He did his job and made sure Jäger had what he needed and went to bed. It was fine. It was good.
Obviously, Jäger thought he needed more, so that's why he was here. "Uh. I don't know. Are you hungry? We could get something to eat."

Jäger had made it his personal mission to make sure Jack had some fun. There wasn't exactly a lot to do in town, but once the lake party had been announced, he had made sure his brother was well aware that Yag intended on dragging him there and making sure he had fun while doing so.
"Okay, see, this is fun," he had one hand laced with Jack's, gripping his brother tightly. "I mean, not getting in the water. Well, maybe tubing would be fun. But I can't swim. You know that though." He turned to smile brightly up at Jack. "But we can start with whatever you want to do! And do say that's whatever I want to do. You're supposed to pick."
