A golem, {in Jewish texts and Jewish folklore} is a clay creature that has been magically brought to life. The name comes from the Hebrew word “golem,” which means something incomplete or unfinished, like an embryo.

In popular legend, however, the golem became a kind of folk hero. Tales of mystical rabbis creating life from dust abounded, particularly in the Early Modern period, and inspired such tales as Frankenstein and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.”  Sometimes the golem saves the Jewish community from persecution or death, enacting the kind of heroism or revenge unavailable to powerless Jews. Often, however, Jewish folktales about the golem tell what happens when things go awry — when the power of life-force goes astray, often with tragic results.

The classic narrative of the golem tells of how Rabbi Judah Loew of Prague (known as the Maharal; 1525-1609) creates a golem to defend the Jewish community from antisemitic attacks. But eventually, the golem grows fearsome and violent, and Rabbi Loew is forced to destroy it. (Legend tells that the golem remains in the attic of the Altneushul in Prague, ready to be reactivated if needed; this legend reappeared in Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay). Likewise in Paul Wegener’s expressionist film The Golem (1920), the golem is a brutish creature whose powers are all-too-easily turned to destructive ends.

This is, of course, a perfect encapsulation of the same anxiety that underlies so much of the mystical speculation about demons, dybbuks, ghosts, and golems: The power of life is so strong, that it brings both promise and terror.

Before talking about in-depth or ‘reviewing’ this episode, I’d very much like if the fanbase could keep in mind not only the said folklore that blatantly inspired this Digimons’ design and canonical lores, but also be careful in their commentaries about this episode as a result.

They are a very specifically Jewish folklore, and within our storytelling tradition are pretty complex creatures created to protect, but with potential for destruction. Often golems are taken out of that context, by people who are not Jewish, to be used just as monsters.

For many folks that isn’t an issue, but for others (myself included) that feels a bit uncomfortable, as the (perhaps unintended) message can be seen as “creatures that protect Jewish people are really monsters.”

[Keeping this information] in mind and being AWARE of the history of the golem in our folklore will prevent issues relevant to handling this topic. {Especially if you are considering either commentating on the character itself, the story within the episode portrayed along with it, or using or referring to the character within future fanworks.}

O[ph]animon - From the ophanim/ofanim, a class of celestial beings in late sections of the Book of Enoch where with the Cherubim and Seraphim they never sleep, but guard the throne of God. They are also [*in JUDAISM specifically] depicted as eye-covered wheels (each composed of two nested wheels), that move next to the winged Cherubim, beneath the throne of God.

Ofani = From Ofanim, an alternative spelling of Ophanim (אוֹפָנים) (「オファニム」 Ofanimu) is the third highest rank of angels. Their name literally means "Wheels" and are often depicted as burning wheels.

Further Reading: Angels In Judaism The Hebrew word for angel, mal’ach, means messenger, and the angels in early biblical sources deliver specific information or carry out some particular function. Later rabbinic and kabbalistic sources expand on the concept of angels even further, describing a broad universe of named angels with particular roles in the spiritual realm.

OPs commentary: Every time someone in this fandom tries to tell me Sorato “never interacted” or “never had moments where they talked to/supported each other” I’m going to show them this compilation and tell them “Please recognize the US dub was drastically altered from the original (+heavily Americanized in general) and just because you try to claim that incessantly, it doesn’t mean these moments and interactions weren’t there.”

Such would often given to husbands, boyfriends, and desired partners. regarding Christmas in Japan: Encouraged by commerce, the “secular” (not-religious) celebration of Christmas is popular in Japan, though Christmas is not a national holiday. Why did you make this compilation?

a) Because I am tired of various others in this fandom [+usually they are White and/or American/U.K./Western fans] (completely seriously!) trying to tell me these two “never interacted” when I can point out pretty much any and every instance (small or significant) where they have, in fact, interacted. I also have the entire Japanese version of Adventures on hand, which certainly helps in making such a compilation and pointing out these things. b) because those issues aside, it can be a genuinely useful reference for both myself, my mutuals (if they ship these two or not), and anyone else who could use it when trying to reference canonical lines and interactions. But in all honesty I really just made this for me. Because I like to use such posts as references. c) Because I wanted to. d) There were various other scattered meta / analysis posts from over the years that pointed out many of these scenes and lines and their contexts in the original version much better than I can describe on my own (despite making a slight attempt here), but these moments can still often be overlooked a lot, {especially by Western fans} so I decided to collect everything I was able to (+fit) into a reference post. This post only covers the Adventures anime. They’ve also had blatant references to them “dating” in the {yes, canonical} drama CD Michi e no Armor Shinka / Armor Evolution to the Unknown, where Yamato quite literally yells “SORA I LOVE YOU” during a battle moment.
