Yesterday my wife and I went to Port Melbourne Yacht Club with all sorts of family and friends to celebrate Craig Carter's life. He passed away suddenly in the night last week leaving a massive hole in everyone's hearts. Craig was well known for his career as a pioneer in the field of sound engineering and sound editing in the film industry, working on over 100 Australian and international media projects. More importantly to me, he was my best friend's dad and my kind, gentle, playful uncle. I have strong memories from when we were very young of him spinning my cousins and me around by our ankles in the back yard to make us dizzy, and trying to collect as many of us children in his arms at once and carry us around pretending to be a hungry ogre who was intending on eating us. Craig was always simultaneously ever present with us and off with the fairies in his own thoughts. Craig would take me and my cousins on long walks through the bush and being young and restless, he would help slow us down and teach us to experience the world as he did, listening to the sounds and absorbing the beauty. I always found him to be exceptionally sensitive to the world around him and he was always so loving and receptive when we saw him. Craig always loved reading, and discussing literature, history and worldly topics. I know he always wanted to write something and create literature to be proud of. Being a humble and quiet man he never gloated about his success in film making, but he really has created many works of art where sound is his medium to express himself and tell his stories. Some of these productions are world famous and likely to be watched, enjoyed and studied for generations to come. There is a good chance Craig Carter had a genuine case of synesthesia​, being a master of his art form and perceiving sound effects and music in ways people could never comprehend. Over Christmas Craig was chatting to me about how he wished he had written more about his life and encouraged me to write myself.
