What do you do when you have so many alternates of the same character, so to speak? You draw them chilling together of course!

It's a bit old but I couldn't keep the lack of IWBTG and its fangames going. Though, I'll admit I got a few ideas myself but I just can't get to them on programming.

i know ryu technically does appear in i wanna be the guy, but thats definitely not a canonical work. given the standard set of rules, what is the ryu number of The Kid (iwbtg)?

It's that time again! What's your favorite game you played this year?

would you be surprised if I told you it was a card game but it wasn't Balatro?

I'm kidding of course, I fucking love Balatro. but I also love Magic the Gathering! played a lot of that this year, including my first ever drafts game in person with some friends I was visiting. lots of fun.

but of course, Balatro is my Game of the Year. if you know me personally you know I have a family history with poker. I'll spare the details but I'm honestly not that good at it, or at least I wasn't until this year. I found Balatro through Vinny Vinesauce in between watching episodes of his latest Rimworld series. seemed like a really cool concept, and quickly me and my friends became obsessed.

I'm currently gunning for Completionist++, the achievement for beating the hardest difficulty of the game (gold stake) with every joker possible. I'm not even a quarter of the way there, but I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve to make it happen before the big content update drops sometime next year.

if you want a smaller game recommendation, I picked up Leap Year on a whim after YouTube recommended some short speedruns of it. fun little puzzle platformer I beat in a couple hours one summer night. it's also weird! I like weird.

I also fully completed An Untitled Story. there was a Tumblr post going around talking about how Maddy Thorson (allegedly), known for her work on Celeste, was responsible for a bunch of games that really defined the indie scene without a lot of people knowing. the obvious example is Jumper, featuring Ogmo, which basically kick-started the rage platformer genre. An Untitled Story is a metroidvania made by Maddy in GameMaker, and I 100%'d it. it was a lot of fun. it's pretty esoteric early on, and all of its sound design is Windows MIDI player directly into your ears. it's extremely charming. all the rooms are hand drawn, power up progression is kinda whacky, and it's story is extremely basic and silly (almost like it was written by a teenager, fascinating!). I went out of my way to fully complete the game and had to use some old GameFaq articles backed up on an indie wiki to do it, honestly awesome. I wish this game had a modernizing update to make it have some nicer UI, the game will constantly resize itself if you die a bunch, so the best way to play is full screen. controller support exists, but isn't great or intuitive. hopefully someday someone will remake it like fans of IWBTG did for that game.

Many years since the events of the 2008 classic; I wanna be the Guy, a relative of The Kid known as "The Dude" and some cyclops creature engage a plan to one up The Kid in order to become quote on quote, "Teh Coolerst".

A dumb idea for a webcomic series based on my older comic series, except this time based on IWBTG by Kayin. I might not make it into an actual series but it would be fun to imagine.

To my knowledge, the kid from IWBTG is the only character from (as in their first appearance) a fangame (i’d personally define “fangame” as a game that prominently features copyrighted works the dev doesnt own the rights to)

(Its 2, the kid -super meat boy-> steve -smash ultimate-> ryu btw)

So my question is, am I wrong about the kid being the only character like this? Is there another character who comes from a fangame (by my definition) but still has a ryu number?

Putting aside that my interpretation of "official"/"commercial" allows for other IWBTG-only characters like the titular Guy, Flumpty Bumpty may be along the lines of what you're thinking. Henry Stickmin if you squint, maybe.

From doing a bit of digging, you could probably make the case for Maybell from Thought of Dolls, whose first video game appearance is in the doujin game Touhou Unreal Mahjong, a commercial product on account of ZUN's famously permissive attitude toward fan work.

About a year ago I remember someone saying the main character in her IWBTG fangames was trans and it started a discussion about how The Kid in IWBTG was trans-masc.

I've held that in my mind since and want to actually work that into something someday.

I Wanna Be The Guy is blatantly a trans metaphor, it’s right there in the title! The Kid wants to be a The Guy!

The extreme difficulty is a metaphor for how much of a fucking pain it is to get approved for hormones and surgery, the cherries that fall unpredictably are metaphors for how people in your life you thought you could trust might suddenly turn on you and be transphobic, The Guy you have to kill and take the place of is a metaphor for ciscentric views of gender, Kraidgief is a metaphor for Kraidgief.
