Trans people and the 4b movement and solidarity from cis women: a vent. I was just scrolling through tiktok and saw a video from Kay Poyer (popular trans woman on tiktok) about how terfs are going to try to convert other cis women into conservatives and that now more than ever cis women need to have sisterhood and solidarity w trans women. And the comments were FILLED w cis women agreeing and pledging their unconditional and unwavering support and saying how they all must protect eachother and what not. And that was very beautiful and moving dont get me wrong!! But.. theres was no mention of trans men (or any other trans people) which I understand! Kay doesnt usually ever even talk about trans men and she was just looking out for herself and her fellow community of dolls, I wasnt really expecting her to bring up trans men. But I also made a video, and my video was about the 4b movement and how ive already seen countless cis women turn their backs on trans men and excluding them from conversations about reproductive care while simultaneously lumping us together w “inherently evil” cis men and including us in the 4b movement (as in dont sleep w or date transmen/whatever the 2 other bs are). And my comments are filled with only 3 types of comments. Either trans men who feel very left out and isolated by the whole thing who are also explaining that the 4b movement is gender essentialist terf shit and how the og movement is horrible to trans women OR cis AND a minority of trans men alike who are going on “men are men” speeches and justifying why we should isolate trans men along w cis men in these dire times. And just. Im so frustrated. Im so disheartened. Im so tired. Im watching EVERYONE turn their backs on trans men, even other fucking trans men. And I dont know what to do. Im sorry for this venty ass wall of text but ive had a rough few days w the election and watching how willing everyone is to give me such unnuanced half baked ass takes about transmascs and men is genuinely kind of fucking me up like. I dont even know what to say like i dont even know why im surprised but FUCK
Hey, it's okay. <3 I got you anon. I love you and I'm here for you, promise. You matter, trans men matter.

Break up prank on the sk8 boys
➯ Characters: Reki Kyan, Langa Hasegawa, Cherry, Joe, Miya and Shadow x gn reader
➯ Warnings: none, just some angst to fluff. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
Reki:
He thought it was a joke at first
Like you, he watched his fair share of videos, and had seen the trend going around already
But you weren’t discouraged, you were going to try and make him believe it no matter what
He laughed it off the first time, but after you simply gave him a puzzled look and a “huh?”, he felt his heart pick up significantly. Maybe you weren’t joking??
Instantly he was running back in his mind where he could’ve possibly gone wrong, where he could’ve messed up so badly that you felt the need to leave?
After his nervous laugh died down, he went deadly silent
“You’re serious?”
You were starting to feel awful, like maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all, but you decided to persist
When you nodded your head slowly, you could’ve died when you saw how quickly his face dropped
Even though he had a small smile on his face, you could see the tears pooling at the corners of his eyes. He was running a shaky hand through his hair, and when you were ready to take him into your arms, to tell him you were only kidding, he wouldn’t let you get a word in edgeways
A flood of questions was suddenly leaving his moth, all his unvoiced questions coming out in one go. He was holding your hand now in an almost death grip, asking you why you were unhappy, why you wanted to leave
Why he wasn’t good enough for you
That’s all you needed before you were pulling him into your arms, sobbing yourself. This shut him up, he was completely speechless as your tears pooled on his shoulder, telling him you were so sorry, that you were only joking. You just wanted to see him get a little panicky, you never expected the outcome to look like this
As soon as the words left your mouth you saw his shoulders visibly drop, pulling you impossibly closer as he let the last of his tears out. He chuckled shakily, running a hand up your back.
“I thought I lost you for a second there”
That was when you pulled your head out of his shoulder, grabbing his face between your hands and pulling him closer to you. Eyes wide, he simply watched as you declared he could never lose you, that you weren’t going anywhere. You were stuck to him like glue, whether he likes it or not
He gave you one last relieved smile, before he was pulling you close again for a desperate kiss. He kissed you like it was the last time he ever would, because now that he’d thought he lost you, he was never going to take anything about you for granted again
Langa:
Was fully convinced you were serious right off the bat
Right as the words “I think we should break up” were leaving your lips, his brain was doing overtime trying to figure put how he hadn’t realised how unhappy you were. Sure, he was kind of bad at reading emotions, but surely he wasn’t so terrible he couldn’t figure out how his own s/o was feeling?
Was he really as bad at communication as people told him he was?
You instantly regretted your decision as you watched his mouth hang open, saw his eyes scrunch slightly as he wrung his hands quietly at his sides
He nodded, and you couldn’t seem to swallow the lump in your throat as your eyes locked on the small tear rolling down his cheek, which he quickly wiped away with a small smile
“If thats what will make you happy”
You couldn’t seem to collect your thoughts as you watched him step closer to you, dropping his head to your level as he grabbed your hand. It was soft, as if he didn’t want to hurt you any more than he thought he had. He stumbled over his words, trying to find the right ones to say. Eventually he just took a deep breath, and looked into your eyes
“Were you really that unhappy?” Your heart broke when you heard the crack in his voice towards the end. “How did I not notice how sad you were?” Tears were falling down his face again and he didn’t even bother wiping them away this time. Suddenly you were shooting forward, grabbing his shoulders as you began to cry
“You’ve never made me unhappy Langa, not once.” You saw his wide eyes stare at you, not even attempting to reply as he watched you continue. “It was a joke, Langa. I wanted to see how you’d react, I didn’t think you’d take it this seriously. Did you really think you made me unhappy? Ive never been happier than when I’m with you-“ you barely got to finish before he was wrapping you in his arms, his grip vicelike. His face was digging into your shoulder, clinging to you as if you’d disappear any second.
His breath was ragged and shaky as he pulled you even closer, making sure there was absolutely no room for you to escape. You ran your hand through his hair in an attempt to calm him down as he slowly emerged from your shoulder
With a small chuckle, he rubbed the side of your face with his hand, letting his head drop slightly as he let out a sigh of relief
“I really thought I was ignoring my own s/o’s feelings.” You laughed, pulling him into another hug
“If I’m ever upset, I’ll let you know. Just know it wont be for quite a while” you grinned, grabbing his collar to pull him into a kiss. It was sweet, and gentle, and you felt all your previous problems melt away as Langa pulled you closer, smiling into the kiss
Cherry:
You and Kaoru rarely fought, and when you did it was over minor things that were reconciled within a day. So when you were sitting him down, asking if he’d be okay with breaking up, the only thing he could feel was complete confusion.
What happened? You’d always been so happy, never expressing much discontent. And besides, whenever you did it was resolved as soon as possible. What was so different today?
What was making you so unhappy that you felt the relationship was beyond saving?
Or worse, what outside your relationship was making you happier than him?
He kept these thoughts to himself, coughing quietly to try and open up his throat that seemed to be impossibly tight at that moment. He held your hand, stroking it softly and nodding before looking up at you
“Why the sudden change of heart, hm?”
The small smile on Kaoru’s face that was slowly diminishing by the second made you want to melt into the ground. Even when you were asking him to leave, he was still so caring, still so loving. You could only watch, feeling your heart break as he looked at you, his eyes glassy as he quickly plastered the fakest smile you’ve ever seen onto his face
“Well, if you’re unhappy when you’re with me, surely we shouldn’t be together.” He let out a small, breathy laugh that was almost missed by you, if you hadn’t been watching him with such avid horror. “I dont know why you feel you aren’t happy anymore, sweetheart, but I’m glad you realised what you want.” You watched him stand without a word, as you slowly realised that this is real.
He thinks this is real
That was all you needed before you were leaping off the couch, practically turning it over with the force you’d pushed off it. You were shouting his name, grabbing him by the arm and absolutely dragging him to face you. With the sudden turn and shock, you both ended up on the floor as you began to babble, words pouring out of your mouth and tears streaming from your eyes
“Kaoru, of course I’m not unhappy, you always know just how to make me happy, I could never leave you!” You were jumping on top of him, wrapping your arms around his neck as he sat up, a hand on your back and the other pulling your hair back from your face, trying to find any trace of a lie on your face
“Are you serous? It was all...” he was speechless. He didn’t realise you would even pull something like that, much less go so far with it
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry” you sobbed. “I never meant for it to go this far. I just wanted to see you get a little worked up, pull a funny prank, nothing else, i prom-“ you were cut off when Kaoru pushed his lips onto yours, breath shaky as he ran his hand through your hair, as if you were going to disappear any second and he was making sure you were still there
When you finally pulled away, he pressed his forehead to yours, letting out a small laugh
“Don’t ever pull that shit again”
Joe:
When you first brought it up with him, he felt his heart drop into his stomach. Surely you weren’t serious, right?
He kept a smile quirked on his lips, a questioning look in his eyes. Still, you kept a face of steel, as if challenging him to ask if you were joking
As worried as he was, he wasn’t sure you were being serious. Something about it wasn’t..genuine? You looked too straight-faced, your expression staying neutral the whole time as if to not give something away. He was certain he hadn’t done enough to make you this delighted about breaking up, so why were you so unaffected?
The cogs were turning in his brain, all arrows pointing towards one of two directions: either he was a massive dick, or it was a prank
Oh. A prank
Of course, he wasn’t certain, but it would certainly explain quite a bit
So he decided on a plan. It wasn’t exactly the nicest thing to do, but if it was a prank, it was a nice way for him to get you back for the little skit you pulled. And if it wasn’t a prank, well, maybe it’ll take the sting away a little
His mouth quickly dropped to a frown, ready to put his plan into action. “Oh yeah? Well, thats a bit of a relief.” He had to try hard to hide his grin when he saw your eyebrows furrow, saw the frown begin to spread across your face. So maybe it was a prank. You could only watch as he continued his speech
“You see, I’ve been thinking about ending things for a while now. There was a girl at S I met a few weeks back, and man, you should’ve seen the eyes she’s been giving me. Anyways, I’ve taken a real liking to her, and Ive been thinking about giving things with her a shot. Of course, now it shouldn’t be a bother, right?”
When he saw your face contort from confusion to anger, he knew he’d fucked up severely. Suddenly you were getting up close to his face, prank forgotten, poking him in the chest as you began to shout
“Are you serious!? After all we’ve been through together, you’re just gonna leave me for some bitch you met a few weeks ago??” You were fuming at this point, while Joe watched you with with a look of mock confusion
“What’s your problem? You were the one who wanted to “break up”, right?” Something about the way he said ‘break up’ made you freeze, looking up at him as you watched a grin begin to form on Joe’s face. That bastard
“You...you asshole!” You were lost for words. He knew this whole time? And instead of enlightening you, he decided to play along? You watched with a blank expression as Joe laughed, pulling you into a hug
“I knew it” he let out a loud laugh, but it almost seemed forced. You pulled away, and when you tried to look at him his eyes seemed to be everywhere but you. You grabbed his jaw, forcing him to look at you
“You didn’t think id actually want to break up, did you?” When he simply frowned, pulling his eyes away again you cooed, pulling him into your chest as you stroked his hair, feeling his arms slowly wrap around your waist and hold you close
It’s safe to say the two of you stayed like that for quite a while
Shadow:
When you asked him to break up as a joke, you simply wanted to see if you could piss him off. Hiromi was prone to getting mad at the smallest things, cursing up a storm when he did something as small as mess up his makeup
So when you saw his face break, felt him shrink in on himself as he asked you why, what had he done that made you want to leave, your face was frozen with shock
Now this was completely new. Of course, you knew Hiromi wasn’t just some big angry man, but you didn’t think he’d get this worked up
Brows furrowed, he brought a hand to his forehead as he let out a long breath
“What happened?” Those two words held so much emotion it almost made you break. You didn’t realise how much this would affect him, just how upset it would make him. But here he was, an emotional wreck as he wiped an almost-tear away from the edge of his eye
But soon after, he was stepping close to you, grabbing your hand and looking at you with all the sincerity in the world
“Please, give me another chance. I dont know what I did, but I do know we can fix it. I know we can, please y/n. I cant lose you”
His heartfelt speech was all you needed for the tears to slowly fall from your eyes, Hiromi looking at you with a look of concern, and confusion. You were stepping into his arms, crying silently as he hesitantly put his arms around you, not quite sure what to do. So was that a yes?
You picked your head off his shoulder, not moving from his arms
“Oh, Hiromi” he looked down at you, concern washing over his face once more. “It was only a prank, I’m so sorry.”
Now he wasn’t just upset, but relieved. A bit of anger was in there somewhere, but that could be overlooked for now. He let out a loud laugh, hugging you so tightly you could’ve sworn you felt at least 3 of your ribs break
“And what made you think that was a funny thing to do?” His voice was dripping with sarcasm, not letting you out of his death grip. You simply shrugged, burying yourself deeper into his chest. He smiled, his knees practically buckling after the whole ordeal
He held you at arms length, a frown on his face. You felt a twinge of panic, maybe he wouldn’t forgive you?
This thought was quickly forgotten when he barked out a loud laugh. He dropped his face to your level, putting his hands on your shoulders
“Pull something like that again, and I swear you’ll give me a heart attack”
Miya:
Miya has never been one for properly expressing his emotions, so when you walked up to him one day and asked him to break up, he simply frowned. He didn’t let it on, but his world was very quickly caving in around him
Keeping a neutral expression, he sighed and nodded his head. He didn’t trust himself to speak right now
When you gave him a confused look from his lack of a verbal response, he really had to try to not walk out of that room there and then. You break up with him, and then expect him to just take it and walk away with a smile??
When you continued to look at him expectantly, he just let out a breath, turning away from you. “Fine. Whatever. If thats really what you want then so be it” he was kicking himself for being so blunt, but what other choice did he have? He couldn’t think, his lungs felt too small, too cramped
And now you were going to leave just like everyone else had
You tried to put your hand on his shoulder, calling his name quietly. He simply shrugged you off, dipping his head so you wouldn’t see the tears that were quickly collecting in his eyes. You’d just dumped him, the last thing he needed was you seeing him cry. You didn’t give up, asking him why he wouldn’t just look at you. Still not facing you, he attempted to talk again
“What more is there to discuss? You want to leave, so go. I’m not going to stop you if its what you want.” The crack in his voice at the end of his sentence broke your heart, and you were quickly turning him around, with more force this time, so he was forced to look you in the eyes
“Do you really think I’d leave that easily? It was a prank, you dumbass.” His head was buzzing with thoughts, why the hell would you do that? So you dont actually want to leave? You’re still gonna stay with him? You-
His thoughts were interrupted by you flicking his forehead. His hands flew to his head, letting out a cry. First you pretend to dump him, and now you have the audacity to flick him?
However, it did serve its purpose of pulling him out of his thoughts, and you were quickly pulling him into a hug while you stroked his hair. Before long you felt your shoulder grow wet with tears, the occasional sniffle leaving him. You laughed, holding him close as you tilted his chin to look at you
“I’m not going anywhere, as much as you might like me to. You’re stuck with me for a while longer, Miya Chinen.” He looked away from you, clicking his teeth
“Shut up..” he was mumbling, but there was so mistaking how hard he was gripping your clothes, as if you might try to leave again. But like you said, you weren’t going anywhere for quite some time

A Walk In The Park
It was about 9 in the morning when you got the leads out of the cupboard deciding that by this time the park would be quiet as the school rush was over and anyone who had to be at work was.Your two excited dogs ran at you jumping over one another to be the first on a lead , your 3 year old blue doberman Milly was first as you clipped the thick leather lead followed by your bearly year old phantom standard poodle polly. You preferred walking them when it was quiet because of their rare colours your girls were a prime target for dognapping because any pups they had would be very expensive. You grabbed a small bag of treats ,their ball launcher and favourite ball as you left . Walking to the park it was a huge enclosed field that had a small fenced off play area in the middle there was a foot path around the edge with the occasional bench and bin, large trees dotted hear and there across the whole park, near the enterance there was a small coffee kiosk for the dog walkers that frequently used the safe enclosed space to run there dogs. Once there you saw three other dogs running loose one large and two small but they were far enough away that you should be able to avoid them. Walking a quater the way down the field you released your babies letting them go scatty they both ran off in a large circle around you letting off steam. After a few moments they slowed down panting watching you as you leaned the ball launcher on your shoulder then flicked it catapulting the ball a fair distance . Playing the game of fetch as you continued walking slowly around the field. Throwing it for the 12th or so time was when you heard someone calling for there dog to "leave it" as an akita that tore past your two and caught the ball resutling in a freindly game of chase as Milly and Polly tried to get it back you laughed and waved it off as the large man jogged closer to you still calling his dog. He was very handsome from here you noted.
"Its fine, their freindly" you called out ,he shook his head at the playful pups before smoothing his dark hair back as he watched the three play excitedly. It was rare that your babies had a similar sized dog to play with everyone now days opting for tiny 'cute' dogs and the larger breeds falling out of fashion. You giggled as the akita run up to its owner dropping the ball who dutifully threw it in your direction. The three dogs chased it erratically it was only as they got closer you realised he'd misjudged the distance before you could move his dog collided with your legs sweeping them from under you. Crying out suprized you landed with a heavy thump on the near frozen ground, the dog realising its mistake stood over you sniffing to see if you were ok joined by your two, before being pushed away by the most beautifull man you think you have ever seen, your thought stuttered to a halt as you noticed he looking down at you with bright blues eye filled with concern.
"Kal you big lump look what you did. I am so sorry are you ok?" He said helping you up laughing it off.
"Yeah im fine not the first time a dogs knocked me on my ass." He looked you over quickly decideing that your ok but began trying to brush the dry dirt off of your legs and bottom. Flustered as this heavenly stranger wiped at the seat of your jeans,you bent down quickly to take over ending up butting heads hissing you both grabed your throbbing forehead.
"Shit sorry fuck is your head ok? Look at me" he said cupping your face making you look at him as he gently ran a thumb over your bumped head. You couldn't help the a small gasp as you saw just how handsome he really was tall and broad, a clean shaven angular jawline,his mouth had a defined cupids bow that looked perfect for kissing among other things, lightly defined cheek bones and all topped off with a set of incrediblely clear blue eyes he looked like a god, you snapped out of it as he ran his tongue over his lips in what you assumed was a nervous gesture.'well you are just fucking oogling him' you thought
"That was my fault sorry, are you ok?" He nodded staring at you still smoothing over your face, you thought it was because you looked a mess after falling ass over tit but it was actually the opposite he thought you were beautiful. Blushing at his appraisal you nervously pulled his hands away ,looking down stroking your babies who had been hovering around you since you fell,you quickly turned your attention to his dog.
"So hes a boy then?" He nodded sheepishly as he realised he'd been caught staring snapping out of his thoughts.
"Yep this is my son Kal" he said ruffling the dogs furry head who was panting content. You giggled it was cute
"These are my babies Milly and Polly" you pointed each one out he smiled letting them sniff his hand gaining approval to stroke them.
"They are really sweet ,amazing colours i dont think iv seen them before. I couldn't acctually tell what breed Milly was when i watched you come through the gates" He stated then faulterd sheepishly as he'd let slip he had been watching you ,choosing to ignore it he concentrated on giving your babies ear rubs as they reveled in all his attention. You nodded smieling shyly.
"Well thank you most people think they are scary tho because of there size. Milly is what you call a blue doberman and Polly is a phantom coat both are rare its why i try to bring them here when its quiet" he nodded in understanding sighing in relief as you didn't mention his embarrassing admission.
"Sometime people are wary of kal because of his size. And you coming when its quiet would explain why I've never seen you here befor, I'd have definalty remembered you" he flirted you blushed not sure where to look as he smirked at you. He picked up the ball launcher and leads from the floor beside you. Holding out your hand to take them back he twisted them away from you lightly with a teasing grin.
"I think we should continue this walk together ,you know for health and saftey's sake" he said winking at you as he used the launcher to pick up and launch the ball out towards the field causing the trio chase it. You nodded looking away your face glowing he chuckled.
"I just realised i havent introduced myself im Henry" he held out a stong hand you shook it introducing yourself.
"Y/n" he tested your name
"Well Y/n would you allow me to buy you a coffee on this fine cold morning?" You smiled shyly at him nodding
"If you want to"
"Oh i do trust me" you felt giddy as he slipped your hand in his before makeing your way to the kiosk.
It had been just over three weeks since you first walk with Henry and it had become a daily occurrence you'd both meet up at around nine grabbed your coffees and do two or three slow laps around the park before going your seperate ways. In that time you'd gotten to know one another he seemed quite reluctant to talk about his job at first, which you understood when he told you he was an actor, he was worried that it would scare you off but it didn't bother you in the slightest and that was the day you exchanged numbers. Your walks were spent chatting and casually flirting with one another, before you knew it you had a crush on the sweet man. Today was particularly cold as you made your way to the park when you got there Henry was at the bench by the kiosk coffees in hand he let out a laugh when he saw both your dogs in their little knit jumpers. You pouted at him as he gave you your drink.
"So your one of those?" He got out between laughter as you let them off their leads and began your walk.
"Yep its for a good reasons tho poodles hair is fine and wavy when they're young it gets thicker and curly with age untill then they feel the cold really bad and Milly gets jealous if Polly has her jumper on and she doesn't" he nodded watching as kal followed the two going between them investigating the jumpers comically then they began chaseing one another for the new slightly bigger ball that you had tossed towards them.
Henry moved closer towards you grasping your hand as usual, taking sips of his drink opting to kick the ball with across the grass with his feet as one of the dogs returned it.
"Well its freezing today there threatening snow by the end of the week" you sighed
"Just what i need snow" you muttered into your cup taking a mouthfull.
"Tell me about it i hope it will hold off until friday" you looked at him confused as he kicked the ball again.
"I have to travel just outside of london on wednesday should be back by friday morning at the latest ,its a fitting and makeup test for an upcoming role ,they have a few different ideas but want to have it sorted asap the costume and props are going to take a while to be ordered and made" he explained shrugging lightly, you deflated slightly it meant soon you wont be able to see him, he would be away filming and promoting and youd be on your own.
"Oh.. that sounds fun tho, are you looking forward to it?" You asked trying to bite down your dissappointment he turned to you smileing wide
"Yes its a role i never thought id get when i auditioned but im really excited for it i cant wait to start filming" he said enthusiasticly you nodded but kept quiet as you kicked the ball kal had brought back. He slowed down and binned your now empty coffee cups then took a long look at you sighing before pulling you around to face him.
"Hey dont worry i'll call you everyday at the fitting and when I'm filming" he said stroking your hair out of your face with one hand an overly intimate gesture to anyone onlookers.
"You dont have to do that" you said trying to look anywhere but his face not wanting him to see how upset you were. You had no right to feel like this you hadn't even known him that long.
"But what if i want to?" He said before pulling you closer to him by your interlocked hands and joining free hands. Your gaze snapped to at that he continued knowing he now had your full attention.
"What if I say that I'm gonna miss you, miss talking to you everyday ,miss the way I can make you blush adorabley with just a look or miss holding your hands in mine ,that im going to find it hard leaving you behind here when I've only just gotten to know you." You were lost for words staring at him as he rubbed to back of his neck.
"That... didnt sound as cheesy in my head.. I just mean I really really like you, as soon as I leave here I cant wait for tomorrow to see you again. What I'm trying to say is that I really really like you" he admitted
"I like you too" the words left your mouth before you could stop them he looked up glowing at you. Quickly before his courage dissapeared he wound his large arms around your waist and pulled you against him leaning in for a kiss, you gasped as his lips met yours soft and gentle at first before tilting his head down more and deepening the kiss becoming more heated and desperate as you wrapped your arms around his neck pulling him closer as your tongues danced back and forth. Hearing a whining you both pulled back looking down at three impatient dogs waiting for the game of fetch to continue. You both laughed Henry kicked the ball without releasing you before leaning down again.
"You have no idea how much I've wanted to do that" he mumbled against your lips placeing chaste kisses on them as he spoke.
" and now I cant seem to stop"
"You think your the only one?" you giggled at him meeting his kisses half way
"Just so you know I expect this to be our greeting from now on love" he whispered lowly and squeezed your waist your tummy fluttered at that.
"Well i suppose thats an acceptable request" you murmured he gave you a mischievous smile.
"Who said anything about request? I'll greet my woman as I see fit" your laugh was cut short as he kissed you deeply again. Before pulling you around one arm slung around your waist as he guided you along the path against him.
"Your woman? you havent even bought me dinner?"
"Which i plan to rectify tonight?" He asked cheekily you nodded at him leaning your head against his chest feeling like the luckiest girl in the world as he looked at you lovingly leaning over kissing your head.

POV
ok i really had to think about this one because ive written so much! but i decided that i want to cause problems on purpose this fine evening <3. i wrote the original version of this piece in july of last year which was before i made randy genderfluid and i dont feel like going back and changing pronouns atm but! you can read the original here. it was a character study type thing for tucker :~)
without further ado:
“I killed her.”
Tucker stood at the other end of the long wooden table, hands folded neatly in front of him. He was neat, and he was formal, and his voice was calm and collected. Some might have described his voice as cold. Whatever it was, it broke Randy out of the almost continuous loop of thoughts they’d been having for the past day.
They were surprised at how well they’d managed to keep it together to this point. They had to keep it together, because if they didn’t, then who would? Siriun, always the one to get into antics, hadn’t said a word since the group had encountered the body at the bottom of the ravine. Ísja was much worse off: he’d started panicking even before the body had been found, right when everyone realized that Lani was missing. The poor boy seemed to have so much on his mind these days, and this certainly wasn’t of any help. Not when it so clearly mirrored the disappearance of his own father. The only difference here was that there was a body to bury.
Randy could sympathize with him. The sense of distance that had greeted them when Winifred, their own daughter, disappeared had come back to haunt them at full force. Things were muddled, to say the least. Real but not real. Colorful but monochromatic. Sharp-edged but soft. They walked the tightrope between dreams, reality, and the regrets that had haunted Randy for more than twenty years now.
“It was my plan from the start,” Tucker continued. “She was stronger than any of us. A menace if we’d left her unchecked.”
Randy vehemently wished that he’d show some sort of emotion. Something. Anything. The smile he always wore when he was uncomfortable was nowhere to be seen. He didn’t show a single sign of despair, either, but that was always hard for him. They kept hoping to catch sight of a creased brow, nervous bouncing heels, absolutely any sign of despair. But unlike when Winifred had disappeared, there was nothing to be found here.
“You bastard.”
Num’s chair creaked against the floor unpleasantly as he flung it back and stood up. His fists were balled in rage that didn’t cease when he grabbed Tucker’s tie. Truth be told, Num may have been the one keeping it together the most. It was surprising given his and Ísja’s brotherhood–Randy would’ve thought that their reactions would be similar. But here he was, hard-edged and angry.
“We’ve been nothing but good to you and this is what you do? What are we to you, livestock?” Num spat, his grip on the tie tightening. “I always knew we couldn’t trust you!”
Tucker’s expression remained steely, his eyes narrowing on Num. He made no move to tear Num’s hand away, nor did he look as though he had much to say. Still, there were none of those telltale signs of nervousness that Randy was so accustomed to seeing. It was odd. All of this was so against his very nature. Tucker had always been one to avoid killing at every opportunity, even if it meant his own starvation. He’d never regarded anyone in the group with such callousness aside from the occasional wry remark. He was kind. He was careful. More than anything else, he was scared.
He was Randy’s best friend.
Num’s expression screwed itself further into rage and disgust. “At least say something you stupid, conniving–“
“Enough of this, Num!” Randy shouted, slamming their hands onto the table and shooting upright.
Please.
Their sense of detachment didn’t lessen despite the pain that budded in their calloused hands. They could still feel the under-used mattress from Tucker’s apartment against their back, relinquished in favor of Tucker taking the couch. They could smell the cigarettes. They could feel the paperwork as they thumbed through it. Those old folders. Those old notes. Those old photographs, one of which had no right to be there. Tucker–he wasn’t like this.
Both Num and Tucker whipped their heads toward Randy in sync, Num’s eyes wide. But he didn’t loosen his grip. Instead, he stood up straight and squared his jaw. “He killed Lani! Who’s to say that he won’t kill anyone else? Who’s to say he won’t kill any more of us?”
No.
“I said enough!”
Randy’s limbs moved of their own accord as they bridged the gap between themself and the other two, only stopping to take a non-aggressive but firm hold of Num’s wrist. Then, they pulled his hand away from Tucker’s tie, Num looking bewildered all the while.
Tucker didn’t so much as flinch.
There was a lump set deep in Randy’s throat as they searched Tucker’s face for something, anything to cling to. This wasn’t like him. This wasn’t like him at all, and if they kept repeating that, maybe it’d become all the truer.
“Where’s Lani?” Randy asked, just barely managing to keep their voice level.
“I killed her, remember?” Tucker replied, maintaining direct eye contact. “We found her body at the bottom of the ravine.”
Randy inhaled deeply. This wasn’t right. Tucker wasn’t like this, no matter how badly he wanted the rest of the world to believe this was his true nature. No amount of shadow merging, oil secreting, or w-shaped pupils could ever convince Randy that he was a monster.
A monster wouldn’t flinch when their best friend put their hands on their shoulders, would they? Randy almost felt themself starting to apologize, but there were more significant issues at hand. “No, you didn’t. Where’s Lani?”
“I killed her,” Tucker replied, still stone-faced. But Randy could hear the slight shake in his voice; notice the waver in eye contact.
Randy’s own hands were shaking despite their gentle grip on Tucker’s shoulders. “Tucker,” they said, voice run taut, “you didn’t kill her.”
“I did.”
“No, you didn’t. She must’ve fallen somehow. This is no one’s fault.”
If it’s anyone’s fault, it’s mine for not watching her more carefully.
“I killed her, Randall!” Tucker finally snapped, yanking himself away from Randy’s hands. A few of the objects lining the walls shook with his words, clanging inharmoniously with his shouts. Upset. A monster wouldn’t have been this upset over a murder. “I killed another child of yours because you were too damn trusting! I killed her because you wouldn’t open your eyes! I killed her because the situation called for it, and because you couldn’t possibly even try to understand that above all else, I’m a monster! I was created to make others suffer and you just happened to be the prime victim!”
Getting shot to death would’ve been a less painful punishment than what Tucker was spewing. Each word he shouted pushed Randy further into the theoretical street, detaching them more than they’d ever let themself be. This wasn’t real, was it? Tucker wouldn’t say things like this. He wouldn’t shove the pain of losing Winifred so close to the surface as if it was happening all over again, because he’d been just as upset. But the pain made Randy’s hands ball into fists. They almost wished they weren’t wearing gloves for the sole purpose of feeling their nails dig into their skin.
Breathless as he’d gotten, Tucker wasn’t done. “Have you even stopped to ask yourself why your life went to shit the second you met me? Have you ever stopped to think that maybe I’m the one to blame?”
Neither of the two spoke for what felt like hours. If Randy had been well grounded before, they were no longer as such, stranded in the murk of betrayal, disbelief, and pain that Tucker had left them in. No hope in sight. Nothing to make sense of. Only them and their emotions.
“Get out.”
The words felt like poison leaving their lips. They were better than this, they knew that. But Tucker–
“Get out before I make you!” Randy shouted.
Tucker stared for a few beats and deep in Randy’s heart, they knew they’d caught a glimpse of sheer pain on his face that ultimately dissipated. There was no going back, however.
Missing loved one number three, and this one was their own fault.

Dinner at Hawkeye Manor was a pleasant affair for those who were accustomed to long stretches of loaded silence. After three years of dining in a conversation vacuum, Roy Mustang had gotten used to it.
Berthold Hawkeye took his meals with his nose pressed between the pages of the newspaper while his daughter balanced the checkbook. Clinking silverware and chiming glass accompanied the pungent smell of printer’s ink as the tip of Riza’s pencil scratched against the household’s ledger. The set of the fourteen-year old’s blonde brow spoke volumes about the solvency of the Hawkeye estate, and judging from recent observations, Roy braced himself for another hard winter. He wrote home to his Aunt Chris, asking for sweet treats, a thick pair of gloves and extra blankets to see him through, intending to put the letter to post the next morning before his lessons.
“What are you doing?”
Riza’s voice was not entirely jarring, but the sudden urgency of the question caught Roy off guard. He flinched, nearly jumped out of his skin and pivoted in his chair, staring back at the knock-kneed tomboy as if he had seen a ghost. Admittedly, she had been looking paler lately; the threadbare quality of her clothes emphasized that fact.
“Writing a letter to my Aunt. Why?”
“The one who lives in Central?”
“Yes.” Roy supposed he hadn’t quite explained that he only had one aunt, that he knew of at least, but wasn’t about to start now. “Why?” Roy’s voice carried an edge that he hadn’t quite anticipated.
“Sorry,” he added, apologetically, “I’ve got a lot to do here, and you startled me. Is there something you need, Riza?”
Reluctance was not an emotion that Riza wore all that often or all that well. She fiddled with the frayed end of her baby blue sweater, refusing to meet his eyes as she spoke. “You should go into town to mail that letter this evening so it’ll go out on the morning train,” she said. “I’ll set aside some dinner for you. I’ll even give you an extra slice of dessert. It’s peach cobbler.”
“That will take almost an hour, and I don’t want an extra slice of dessert,” Roy retorted. “I can just give the letter to the postman tomorrow morning. One day won’t make a difference.”
Still stroking the hem of her clothing, Riza’s tone became impassioned. She looked up to meet the gaze of her father’s apprentice. “It might freeze tomorrow night, and the mail to Central could be delayed for weeks. Could you please, Roy? I- I need to talk to my father, and I think it’d be best if you were out.”
Roy opened his mouth to argue but stopped as the puzzle pieces fit together, forming a more precise picture in his mind. Riza needed to speak with her father, which she never did. She’d made Professor Hawkeye’s favorite food, peach cobbler, which they rarely could afford. Riza was offering Roy an extra slice of dessert - possible her own - because it was the only bargaining chip she had to offer.
He’d be an ass to refuse her request at this point. Aunt Chris had taught him better than that.
“Fine,” he hissed through gritted teeth. Roy glanced out the window as the wind gusted through the trees, knocking burnish yellow, brown and orange leaves from the branches. He shivered at the thought of a long, lonely walk down the dusty country road.
Roy returned later than intended with frozen toes and cheeks red and raw from the cold. As he stepped into the entryway and stamped his boots against the mat, Roy heard raised voices coming from their small kitchen, the place he usually ate dinner.
“I give you food. I give you shelter. I provide for a first-rate education, and what has that school imposed on us! The clothes on your back are fine as they are, and I should write that school an impassioned letter to protest non-academic endeavors. End of discussion.” Berthold’s raised voice loomed through the wooden walls of the dilapidated country home.
“All the other girls enjoy the cotillion,” Riza stressed. Her tone was high and shrill. “I don’t want to ruin it for everyone, but the nice dress I have doesn’t fit. I asked my teacher if I could help prepare and serve the food again with the lower grades, but she said no. I’m to be judged on table etiquette this year and dancing next year. The cotillion is one-sixth of my overall grade, Father!”
“Table etiquette and dancing!” Berthold scoffed. “I’m not going to allow you to spend a quarter of our monthly budget on frivolities such as shoes and dresses that you’ll wear once. What you have is sufficient.”
“Please, Father. I already tried letting out the seams. See? The hem is too far above my knees, and my chest-”
Roy crept close to the doorframe. He walked softly to muffle the sound of his footsteps against the hardwood and pressed his back against the wall. The apprentice stilled his breath to hear his master’s low, cruel utterance.
“Maybe you should eat less. It fit your mother fine when she was your age.”
There was a beat of silence as the weight of his words settled and wreaked their havoc. Roy’s fists tightened. His teeth clenched, and he heard the soft shuffling of fabric and shoes against the kitchen’s checkerboard floor as Riza darted into the hall.
He caught sight of her as she passed and was surprised to find Riza wearing a lacey white dress gone yellow with age. The delicate layers sat too high on her hips, and the button-up back was taut.  The effect strained the natural curves of her figure in places where the garment should have comfortably fallen. In the split-second their eyes met, she turned away and darted up the stairs toward her room.
As Roy followed in Riza’s footsteps, he stopped off at the small apprentice dormitory to discard his jacket, boots and scarf but caught sight of the dinner on his desk before he could peel the layers from his skin. As promised, there sat an extra serving a peach cobbler and a note thanking him for his discretion. The sight hurt Roy’s heart just as much as the soft sobs coming from the other side of the hallway.
He sat down to write another letter to his Aunt Chris and told himself that he didn’t mind two brisk walks through the bitter cold on the same evening.
If the crates stacked in the entryway of Hawkeye Manor bothered Berthold, he paid them little mind. The postman begrudgingly lugged them in from his wagon with sideways remarks about the size and weight that Roy pretended not to hear. It took the young man four trips to carry the wooden boxes to his second-story dormitory and twenty minutes more to recover from his exertions. But the content of crates far surpassed any expectations he might have had when he asked his Aunt if his sisters had a nice dress to spare.
Chris Mustang’s note was, as she, straightforward and to the point.
Roy-boy,
A dress is useless without shoes, coats and accessories. Your sisters have no need of these as they are from last year. See that they find a good home.
Aunt Chris
All that was left was to wait for Riza to return home from school.
“Oh, Riza,” Roy called out, pleased as a preening peacock, “could you come here a moment. I have a favor to ask.”
Roy waited with growing impatience for her to turn the corner and smiled like the Cheshire cat when her indignant scowl fell, quickly replaced by a look of wonder. At least a dozen dresses and coats of all colors and styles were laid over the two vacant beds in the dormitory. An entire jewelry box of ornate rings, bejeweled earnings and long strands of pearls sat casually on Roy’s nightstand. And in the corner of the room, a large crate of purses and high-heeled shoes sat, still waiting to be unpacked.
“My silly sisters thought you might be interested in some of their old dresses,” he started. “And I told them that, of course, you wouldn’t want last year’s styles, but they insisted, and here we are. Might you consider taking these off my hands? I’d hate to send them back.”
Riza approached the dresses with equal parts hesitation and fascination, running the back of her hand along the frilly sleeve of a shimmering, soft pink dress and burying her fingers in a fur-lined coat that, Roy realized, once belonged to his own Aunt. Then, suddenly, her awe turned sour as she shook her head to rid her eyes of the marvels before them.
“I can’t accept these, Roy,” she said sadly. “We can’t afford-”
“Oh, please,” Roy interrupted. He’d prepared himself for this particular argument. “No one would be caught dead in these clothes in Central City. And I realize it will be a hassle to take them in, but I’d hate to have to haul these to the post office. It’s so far away, and the weather is absolutely terrible this time of year.”
Roy hoped against hope that, just this once, she wouldn’t be so stubborn, and he was rewarded by a teary-eyes gaze that caught the reflection of the many metallic bobbles glinting in her new jewelry box. Riza gathered the clothing in her arms and looked at Roy with a heartbreaking grin that stretched the corners of her heart-shaped face.
“Thank you,” was all she said in reply.
Through the lump in his throat, Roy grumbled his own response. “Don’t mention it.”
He couldn’t go to the dance with her and probably would not spend another winter under Berthold’s tutelage. Neither could Roy change his master’s mind once it had been made up nor lessen the burden of her lonely life. But if he could play some small part in a brief moment of happiness, the young man decided he would take that chance, if not for altruistic reasons then selfish ones. If only so that when Riza would smile, all decked out in her finery as she departed for the cotillion, Roy would know he was responsible for it.
He would fight for her well-being, even after she herself had surrendered.
A/N:  Thank you so much for the prompt. I hope you like it even though I took royai and made it young!royai.  Today, I woke up thinking about my grandmother and a particular conversation she had with my father about a prom dress.  So, I guess this one it a little for her as well.  Feel free to send me pairing requests for particular prompts (Fictober or original) via my tumblr, and if you read something you like, don’t hesitate to let me know. Your kudos, bookmarks, subscriptions, comments, likes and reblogs make my day!

wait what did davepeta do
oh its nothing they did like, personally? i just have a whole ass issue with the way that whole situation (with the sprite^2s in general, not just dp though i have an entirely different problem with them) was handled in the comic?
look under the cut for my rant ramble because ive had a Lot of issues with this ever since the first page that the concept of sprite^2′s were introduced and i proceeded to write a poorly worded essay about my opinions on them
like, for what reason did they need to exist? except for to make tavros the butt of another joke, and also completely irrelevant yet again? because from what i remember of the end of homestuck, gcattavrosprite^2 was seen maybe like... once? twice?
jasprose was there to have weird conversations with people, and make rose have an existential crisis? and davepeta, in my opinion, completely ruined the entire point of davesprite’s character arc.
davesprite, as a character, from the very beginning, his whole arc was about accepting himself within his own skin. he started out as this Other Dave fused with a bird and given sprite knowledge. everyone sort of relegated him to Dave the Lesser and he was okay with that for like, a hot minute, until he wasnt.
on the ship, his relationship with jade went so poorly because he felt like she didnt see him for him, just another dave, not as davesprite.
john was constantly calling him ‘dave sprite’ and unconsciously referring to him as ‘just dave but hes a sprite’ and that was real rough
cue act whatever, its been a hot minute since i reread that exchange because it legit made me furious, davesprites been kinda chilling, seems to have been relegated to the ‘forgotten side character’ pile (like most of the underutilised characters in this comic that could easily have been used for this hussie ex machina shit instead of the poor bastard whos been struggling with his identity this whole time), and ambled over to see what was up
Tumblr media
and hey look at that one of the most interesting characters is back! hell yeah, i bet davesprite would make a cool splash in the final fight if hes up to it (though i honestly doubt he would have been)
but no! nah, nah, he cant just be settled in his own self, hes gotta be combined with yet another sprite? because i guess we needed more characters lumped in at the end that nobody knew or cared about?
(side note: hooray for nb rep and all, i’m nb and proud of it, but like... i got roxy in the epilogue, thats all the nb rep i need and at least they arent a lumped in character with no purpose but fucking hussie ex machina)
so my point is
while i have issues with the sprites as a whole, shoved in at the very last minute instead of bringing relevance to characters that were both already there and deserved a satisfying conclusion to their story arcs (there are so many underutilised characters in homestuck and it’s absolutely abysmal), i have the most issues with davepeta because i honestly dont get why they completely undercut davesprites wrestling with his own individuality only to smash him together with poor nepeta, who also barely got any actual development, so they can serve some hastily scribbled together purpose? that i completely skimmed past in the epilogue because it didnt add shit all to the story?
im just tired pal, its ridiculous and im tired? i dont like davepeta purely for what they represent, a hasty attempt to wrap up loose threads instead of providing a satisfying end for the characters we’ve been reading about and loving for, what, a decade now? (only 7 years for me, but we cant all be on the ‘read it from the start’ train)
wow this... took a while, sorry for the sprite bashing i just have a lot of Opinions on the final acts and the epilogue and you kinda hit all of them at once :’)

Despite all odds, and thinking I wouldn’t have got inspired to do it, here is Chapter17; brought to you on New Years Day as I planned :)
I dedicate this (which I never do) to the badass people who I’ve only spoken to a little bit, but have been so damn kind about my work and are just great people.
Enjoy :)

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Nothing could quite compare to how Temari felt in this exact moment, nor could she relate any experience in her life to the underlying fear that had resonated since Saturday night; that ever-present pang of hurt that clung to her chest and send shivers down her spine.
Gaara, as expected, had been as helpful as he could be. When she got home, after the false smiles and tired eyes played well in front of Kankuro, she made a beeline for his room, and found him sat in bed, reading as he waited. There he had sat, looking at her with a gaze that was equal parts exhausted and excited, but it took only one proper look at her for his arms to open up. And, obviously, she ran to him.
All she’d done was explained. The evening had been pleasant, despite the fact that he was late, and very much despite the fact that he wasn’t willing to give her up as a therapist. She was not going to be any use to him anymore—she must’ve told Gaara that a hundred times over, but nothing seemed to make him speak. As always, her little brother sat and listened intently, holding her close until she eventually calmed down and fell asleep in his arms. When she’d woken up he was on the floor with a blanket and a pillow, his red hair spread messy, and she couldn’t help smiling. He was definitely her big brother at heart.
Both Sunday and Monday had been days of false smiles and hiding, reading every file but his in an attempt to recollect her thoughts and not be useless, but every road felt like it lead back to him. Every phrase that fell from a patient’s mouth felt inferior, and, while on the Monday she had her first patient who was ready to stop coming to see her, she felt no fulfilment.
She thought knowing him had been making her happy, but now she felt almost nothing at all.
But that whole time had been leading up to this moment. For two days she’d been waiting to hear that door click, torturing herself by reading his file over today’s lunchtime, and trying her absolute best to keep up with everything people said to her. Without a doubt, though, she had never felt more on edge in her life, and she stared at the doorknob, just waiting for it to turn.
As the metal glinted as it moved, Temari wanted nothing more than to hide away behind her desk or disappear away, never to return. Instead she braced herself, took a deep breath, and desperately searched for a positive in the situation.
Three-fifty-four, she noted the time. He’s early for once.
“Hi,” she mumbled, forcing a smile.
“Hi. Sorry.”
“Come sit down,” she instructed, adjusting her position on her chair. “Are you, um, doing alright today?”
All Shikamaru could do in response was nod, rubbing his neck nervously as he stepped closer. “Well, this is awkward.”
“It’s not!” she lied. “So have you had any problems since Friday?”
It was his turn to lie, shaking his head.
“Really? None?”
And again. “No.”
“How’re your family?”
Suddenly there was a smile on his face, and she could feel herself getting riled up; confused by it’s appearance. “You’ve got no idea how to talk to me now, have you?”
Temari gulped, her palms sweating. “I don’t know what you mean.”
“This is horrible,” he chuckled, shaking his head. “It feels like we’ve never even met before.”
“That’s what I was going for. You were the one who said forget about everything, Shikamaru. I’m forgetting it.”
“I didn’t mean forget how to be a normal human being.” Shikamaru sighed, sitting back into the sofa and biting his lip as his eyes looked everywhere but at hers. “I meant go back to before what happened—I meant be yourself, Tem.”
“Temari,” she argued, correcting him. “And that’s difficult, given that I knew this would happen and yet you just had to come back.”
“Tem—”
“And now I can’t help you.”
The spark that was fighting to stay alive in his eyes suddenly went out, and his arms folded across his chest, sloppy like a ragdoll. His gaze flew towards the window, and like a statue he was at once immovable.
Temari felt a lump in he throat. “Shall I grab the board?”
He didn’t move.
“Okay then, shall I just go fuck myself?”
She thought she saw that slight smile wriggle its way back onto his lips, but when she blinked it was gone. “Why don’t you just ask me about Asuma?” he mumbled. “You were on a fucking roll on Friday until I stopped you.”
“Your teacher?” She frowned. “Is there more for you to say about him? You already covered a lot of it then.”
He laughed, humourlessly. “Forget it then, jeez.” She could see his eyeballs flickering side to side, lulling closer to closing as he watched the clouds. “It’s as if you’ve forgotten your job.”
The recurring desire to punch him was crawling back to her, stronger than it ever had. “My job, Shikamaru is to help you understand yourself, and to make you feel better. And, to be really honest with you, right now I have no idea how to do that whatsoever.”
“Brilliant.”
“Will you just shut up?” she shouted, burying her face in her palms.
Shikamaru could see just from the whiting of her knuckles out of the corner of his eyes how uncomfortable she was, and the sharpness of her voice wasn’t something he was used to. Why had he at any point thought that this was going to be different from this? Did any sane part of him really think that she wouldn’t be mad at him in some way, shape or form? Of course he didn’t, so why was he so surprised that she was upset, infuriated. She almost looked broken, and the same insane part of him that was so riddled with hopeful denial wanted nothing more than to mend her somehow.
But, then again, she was Temari—from what she’d told him she was the strongest person she knew. Surely some stupid skinny asshole hadn’t shattered that person to a nervous wreck. She wasn’t like him; or, at the very least, he didn’t want to think that she felt at all like he did right now.
“Temari, I’m sorry, I—”
“I don’t want you to apologise to me. I don’t want you to even mention it.” Her eyes, bloodshot and angry stood in agreement, but Shikamaru couldn’t help thinking they didn’t give the whole picture.
He leant forward in his seat, hands locked together between his knees. His gaze turned solely on her, desperately trying not to waver and determined to not look away again. “I’m sorry I came back.”
“I just cannot believe I called you selfless, Shikamaru. You’ve come back here purely for yourself, like you don’t realise how genuinely hard this is for me to continue with!”
“We went on one date…”
“Which was one too many, Shikamaru! I—” She stopped herself abruptly, lowering her voice to a whisper. “I almost fucking kissed you!”
He gulped, eyes falling to the floor.
“I’m sorry. Did you actually want to talk about Asuma?”
“If you want me to. If it helps me get better then sure,” he mumbled, nodding.
“That’s so important to you, isn’t it? Getting better.” Her voice was almost bitter, but she masked it well with her soft smile. “That overrides everything.”
Shikamaru’s shoulders drooped. “I mean, obviously it’s important to me, but I wouldn’t say it ‘overrides everything’.”
“So, if you were to have the chance to do something that would make you genuinely happy but it would stop you getting better, you’d do it?”
He raised his head again, shaking his head with the most surprising smile yet. “I know exactly what you’re saying. My IQ is through the roof remember.”
“I never said anything about—”
“But I know that’s you’re saying. I know what can make me better, and I will do it. When I’m better I can do the things I want to do…”
It was Temari’s turn to feel her stomach fill with guilt. Despite the anger that rushed through her body, and the insane temperature at which her blood was boiling, for reasons she couldn’t quite pin down, she suddenly felt herself go cold at the sight of his smile. Not calm—no she was definitely still infuriated with him—but genuinely chilled. So many times she had looked at him and seen nothing but his usual melancholic veil of false calm, having no idea what was really happening under than dark hair and what was really inside his heart. Never had she known exactly what he was going to say; she just wasn’t able to pin him down like that.
Until now, because, strangely, he could feel it herself. So many things at once, rushing around; always taking blame and never placing it for so many unforgotten mistakes and could-have been moments, trapped in a loop of hostility towards himself that made his fingers tap anxiously…she could see it all. And, despite all her instincts as a therapist, she couldn’t bear to watch anymore.
“Most of them, anyway,” he added finally, one corner of his mouth raising, as if to convince her he was okay, really.
It didn’t work.
“I’m sorry. I never should’ve agreed to go out with you.”
Shikamaru shook his head, a deep frown carved into his expression. “Stop it. You have nothing to apologise for.”
“But, I—”
“You’re only trying to help me,” he acknowledged. “It’s my fault that I’m back here, and it’s my fault that I’ve painted myself with an extra layer of pain every hour since Saturday, and I’ve kept adding to it; checking my phone, almost calling you, almost calling here yesterday. I know its entirely my own fault, and yet I can’t shake it off.” He let out a huge sigh, squeezing his eyes shut as his head shook, trying to displace his thoughts. “I just can’t fix it.”
As she watched him haul himself to his feet, zipping up his hoodie blind, Temari felt her boots violently hit the ground and soon she, too, was on her feet, making a beeline for him. When she’s turned the corner of her desk, her hips swaying rapidly as she sped walked, she reached out to grab his arm, but his eyes flew open, and he stepped back, crossing them across his chest.
“Don’t.”
“Shikamaru—”
“Don’t, it’s fine,” he whispered, trying to stop himself listening to his own words. “I won’t come back.”
Temari was too frozen by far too many emotions to move a muscle, and so she watched hopelessly as the young man paced towards the door—faster than she’d ever seen him walk—lingering with his fingers on the door handle. She thought, maybe, that he’d look up. Or maybe he’d turn and give her one final smile—one last hurrah.
Silently he nodded once, and twisted the knob, leaving as silently as he’d entered. It took seconds for Temari to collapse on the sofa he’d just been sat on, perturbed by the warmth of spot he’d just been in, and pull her phone from her pocket. Quickly, swallowing all of her emotions and whatever pride she had left, she dialled her most called number and listened to the beeps of it ringing, and ringing, and ringing…
“Gaara,” she said to the answerphone, not caring whether he listened now or in three hours, just desperate to speak to someone or something. “Please say you’re going to the pub quiz tonight with trenchcoat-guy. I really want to come—hell I’ll even pay for your drinks, just let me come. Please!” She was aware how painful her begging was, so after a long, deep breath, she uttered the real truth, “I just really need a bloody drink.”
Outside, at the bus stop in the pouring rain, a young man put his phone to his ear and uttered very similar words. “Choji,” he sighed down the phone, “please tell me you can meet me tonight?”
“Man, I’ll be at work from six onwards, but Ino’s probably free if—”
“I’ll come. I need you, man.” He did, and his friend’s vague company would be better than loneliness tonight. He couldn’t do it tonight.
~~~
Temari knew that every other Tuesday her youngest brother would come to the pub, drink with his friends, and play some quiz she’d never considered taking part in. What she didn’t know was that said brother was really, really good at it. And, while that inevitably made her feel a bit stupid and a little more downtrodden given the day she’d already had, it definitely had it perks. Perks which consisted of a lot of free drinks for winning each round.
The clock had barely struck ten and she was convinced at this point that she’d drunk a bucket’s worth of cocktails. Never had she considered herself a cocktail person—she had always been a ‘beer-out-of-the-can’ kind of girl, with the odd gin-and-tonic of someone else could be bothered to make her one. So, unsurprisingly, the pitchers of cocktails their quiz team had one, and she had drunk, had gone straight to her head.
Temari could hold her alcohol with the big guns—she could out-drink Kankuro any day—but this was dangerous. These drinks tasted like fruit juice, and they just kept on coming. She was smart, and underneath the fuzziness and slurring, she was perfectly aware that this was not going well.
And, for once, she didn’t give a shit.
Shikamaru, on the other hand, did.
He’d spotted her the second she walked in, hiding expertly underneath his scarf so she didn’t notice him, and ever since he had been sat, hidden behind a pillar, hoping that she’d never leave her seat—never see him. She had as much right to be here as him, and yet he knew if she saw him she would get up and leave. Or, at least, she would’ve.
He hadn’t join in with the quiz, although Choji had violently urged him that he should, telling him he could get crisps or juice instead of the drinks they gave to winners if he just asked.
“Look,” he said as Shikamaru peered over at the blonde drinking some fantasy-coloured drink through a draw, “you can join in anytime. You’ll ace it if you do!”
“Choji,” he argued, “I didn’t come to play a game and eat crisps. I came to be with my mate and not be alone. If I’m going to feel sad anywhere, I may as well feel sad in a room full of noisy strangers.”
His friend had to stop himself reaching across the bar to hug him. “I’m sorry I have to work, man.”
“It’s fine. Just get me a drink.”
“Orange juice again?”
“No.” Shikamaru shook his head, biting on his lip. “Give me whiskey. Double.”
Choji’s eyes widened, and his forehead creased into a worried frown. “Man, I really don’t think you want to—”
“Choji…”
“The most you’ve drunk since you were eighteen is half a pint of weak-ass beer,” he winced, “and we all know you don’t enjoy drinking.”
Shikamaru fished out a five pound note and held it out to him. “God, you’re a pain. Keep the change, now come on.”
“Shikamaru, you don’t want this. You’ll hate me tomorrow.”
“I said double, Choji.”
The blank stare he sent his friend’s way was enough to make Choji feel as if he’d lost a war, and he could feel the pit of his stomach growing emptier as he looked into the bleak abyss of Shikamaru’s eyes. He was going to ask what had happened but now, as he unwillingly lifted the transparent bottle and measured the liquor as required, he didn’t have the nerve. Something about the lifeless urgency in the voice of his best friend made him feel broken, and after he thought it was all getting better, too.
He snatched the money and put the glass before Shikamaru. “If it weren’t for the fact that my manager is really specific with the ‘refusal of service’ rule, you would not be getting this. You’re an idiot.”
“Love you, too,” sighed Shikamaru, swirling the glass around.
“I thought you wanted to get better Shikamaru,” growled Choji, shaking his head, “but then you do this and just let yourself regress. I swear to God if it’s that girl—”
“It’s not her.” He knocked back the drink, squeezing his eyes shut. “Man, I forgot how shit that tastes.”
Choji only had to take one look at his blank slate of a face to know what was happening. “You’re going to bloody order another one, aren’t you?”
“And I thought you quit your day job as a psychic.”
The sarcasm didn’t even begin to amuse Choji, who shook his head and failed to find words. Only after he’d been called to help someone, minutes of staring at his expectant looking friend later, that he managed to speak. “Fine. But I’m not playing any part in it; ask someone else.”
Shikamaru frowned. “Choji, come on.”
“No,” his friend called back as he walked to the other end of the bar. “I can’t do it.”
After only a couple of minutes of longingly waiting for Choji to come back and throw in the towel, Shikamaru could feel himself falling into that familiar feeling of glee. Unfortunately, he knew it wasn’t real—sadly for his wallet one double wasn’t enough to fool him into genuinely feeling happy—hence the need for another. It had been so long since he’d allowed himself to do this. On occasions he’d always have one half and it would last him the whole night, and it would make him feel like he fitted in.
But this was no occasion; this was a desperate avoidance tactic, and he knew it. She was over there—the one person he simultaneously wanted to stare at the whole night and never wanted to see again—and he was painfully aware of it. He didn’t want to be aware of it.
He’d been to enough sessions with enough asshole therapists to know what he was doing, and he didn’t care—he didn’t care at all. There she’d been, suggesting to him that he was really only devoted to getting better, not feeling happy, and now he just wanted to scream, “Look at me!” until she took it back; until she took him back and rewired him as promise, fixed him as promised…
Of course, he didn’t do that. He couldn’t be bothered to do that. Instead he waved down the smiley brunette girl behind the bar and got himself the same again, and necked it instantly, forcing a smile at her afterwards when ordering another.
But the longer he sat there, the smaller he felt. It was like when he first did this, years ago, and it wasn’t washing over him the way he expected, the way he craved. Suddenly the bar stool he perched on felt to high, and his neck felt too cold, so he threw on his coat and hopped down, drinking that last whiskey and rubbing his eyes. He couldn’t leave without saying goodbye to Choji, and he couldn’t go home or else his mother would yell at him for drinking after so long of holding back.
Choji was right, no matter how much he’d deny it out loud. This was all because of her, that troublesome woman. Through nobody’s fault but his own he’d built her up as this fantasy saviour; the beautiful woman who cared about him no matter what, in a way he’d never even imagined before. And as much as he’d laugh off the ridicule from his friends about his many lonesome years, he really had never thought of anyone like that. Before this—this bizarre, impossible to pin feeling—he’d never wanted to spend time with someone just for the sake of it, and he’d never wanted to listen to someone talk about nothing like he did her.
“This is it, isn’t it?” he mumbled, so quiet he could barely hear himself. “She’s got me.”
He couldn’t leave, but he could hide from her until she left, and from Choji until the whiskey ran it’s course. And where could he hide in this pub that she was guaranteed not to go? Well, there was only one place that came to mind.
However, in his slightly drunken state as he shuffled towards his destination, the first thing Shikamaru had managed to forget that Temari still had eyes, no matter how blurry their vision was, and obviously she spotted him immediately. Stumbling to her feet, she told Gaara she was just nipping to the bathroom, and took her bag with her, slung haphazardly across her shoulder.
The second thing he forgot was that she definitely had the nerve to follow him into the men’s bathroom, and that he definitely wasn’t safe from her in there.
So, when she edged open the bathroom door, as subtly as a drunk woman can, and found him smoking next to a half opened window, she fumbled for the latch at the top of the door, locking it quickly. “You don’t drink my ass.”
Numbed, Shikamaru turned slowly, frowning in surprised. “T-Temari? What’re you—”
“You didn’t actually want to go out with me, did you?” She slurred her words into what almost sounded like three long words, and immediately Shikamaru realised he wasn’t nearly as drunk as thought he was; or as he wanted to be.
“What are you talking about?” he sighed, exasperated.
“That’s why you didn’t make any effort to impress me. You didn’t want to did you?”
Shikamaru couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness, tapping his cigarette out of the window and letting the ash fly into the wind. “Of course I wanted to,” he insisted. “I’m just useless, Tem.”
She blinked expectantly at him, shaking her head constantly. “Bullshit.”
“Temari…”
“Temari, what?” she laughed, clearly unamused as she waved her arms about dramatically. “Temari, I’m sorry I’m a miserable git. Temari, I’m sorry I lied to you. Temari, I’m sorry I made you fancy me.”
He rubbed his eyes with one hand and took a drag with the other, strategically blowing the smoke through the window. Nothing was coming to mind to respond to her—nobody had ever silenced him in the way she did, cornered him like she did, terrified him like she did.
And he almost craved it.
Trying his best to smile, he squished the butt of his cigarette on the windowsill and left it there, turning to look at her. She looked all the more beautiful tonight, but something deep within the dark depths of the subconscious he loathed so much was telling him that was due to the alcohol in both their systems, and the rosy cheeks hers had graced her with.
With all her could muster, Shikamaru leant against the wall next to the window, hands in the pocket of his coat, before he finally opened his mouth to tell the brutal truth, “Temari, I’m sorry I couldn’t bare the idea of not seeing you again.”
Yeah, right, he mused inside his mind. As if she’s going to remember that tomorrow.
Suddenly, unexpected to him, Temari dropped her bag and advanced on him, walking in jagged lines—intense zig-zags—and he could feel his knees begin the shake. “What the hell are you doing, Tem?”
“You didn’t get it, did you?” she asked, pulling one hand from his pocket and placing it on her waist.
Gulping, Shikamaru tried his best to remove it and stay calm, but every time he almost escaped her loosening grip she grabbed his hand tighter. In the end he just kept it there, and stared into her gorgeous teal eyes with the most passive desperation. “What?”
She wrapped her arms around his neck, her lips centimetres away from his. “Why I asked you to stop seeing me as a patient.”
When she bit her lip, despite all his attempts, Shikamaru felt his knees quiver more and more. “I, um,” he mumbled, voice managing to remain steady despite his body’s weakness. “I think I need to go find your brother, and—”
“No, please don’t,” begged Temari, her nose brushing against his so delicately.
There was no denying that he wanted to hold her, and he wanted to kiss her, just as she was clearly attempting. He couldn’t lie to himself and say he hadn’t had a sleepless night wondering what the hell would’ve happened if the other night this had happened instead of their sad reality. But he didn’t want it like this.
He could only just smell the floral notes of her perfume, over the alcohol that plagued the air, and while she smelt of sweet tropical juice rather than anything evenly mildly bad, he couldn’t change the truth: they were drunk, and he didn’t want it to happen this way.
“Temari,” he whispered. “Tem, are you paying attention?”
She hummed softly, her forehead flush against his now.
“We can’t do this, love.”
A soft moan fell from her lips, and the hairs on the back his neck stood on end. “Why not?” she whined.
“Because we’ll regret it,” he sighed, himself a little upset by the fact.
“I-I won’t,” insisted Temari, stubborn as ever.
“You will,” Shikamaru corrected, smiling slightly as he pushed her away. “Can I borrow your phone?”
She frowned and held onto his shoulders for support as she stumbled backwards. “Why?”
“I just want to let your brother know you’re okay.”
It took a long time of him standing with his hand out expectantly, but eventually Temari caved with a smirk and handed him her phone. While she wasn’t quite sure why she couldn’t have just done that, she didn’t question him. Probably because in that exact moment, she wasn’t quite sure about anything.
“There,” he mumbled, biting his lip as he handed it back. “I told him you’re getting some air and will probably make your own way home.”
“He won’t be fine with that.”
Buzz.
She looked down at her phone and the text message that appeared on the screen.
Gaara: Fine. See you later :)
“Okay, maybe he will,” groaned Temari, “but where the hell are we going?”
Shikamaru shrugged, hands in pockets as he watched, amused, as she tried to slot her phone into her bag. “I can take you home?”
“And risk Kankuro punching you?” she cackled laughing.
“Then that’s a no.”
“Take me home with you.”
He almost choked on his own spit. “What?”
“Please,” she whined. “Take me home with you.”
“No!”
“Why?”
“Because you’ll wake up in the night and punch me.” He could hear himself, and the melodrama he was spouting, but he still didn’t sound worried, as such.
“Then where?”
Shikamaru bit down on his lip and accepted the arm she slung around his shoulders. “I have an idea.”
~~~
“No.”
“But Choji,” he pleaded, this time taking the role of the whining one, “neither of us can go home.”
Choji shook his head. “I’m not giving you whiskey and letting you bang your therapist in the same night. I already feel like a shit friend as it is.”
“I’ve sabotaged myself here, man,” insisted Shikamaru. “And I promise we won’t do that. I just want to make sure she has somewhere to sleep, man.”
“She has a house!”
“Where she’ll talk about me and then everyone will feel even more shit than already.” He raised his eyebrows. “Man, I didn’t ask for her to follow me into the bathroom.”
Surprised, Choji’s mouth fell open. “She didn’t?”
“Yeah, she’s smashed.”
“She needs to go home.”
Shikamaru nodded, sighing.
“You’re still drunk, aren’t you?”
“Only with the words, man. Brain is doing fine.”
Choji raised his eyebrows and smiled at his friend, pulling him in for a hug, which Shikamaru begrudgingly accepted. “If you hug me back you can have the keys to my flat?”
The thinner man hugged tighter than he ever had.
“They’re in my coat out back. Use that door.”
Shikamaru smirked. He had a true friend in this guy, and he found out as much more every single day.
~~~
Temari sighed, throwing her spoon into the plastic bowl Shikamaru had given her and fell back into the couch. “I can’t believe we’re literally above a fish and chip shop and you didn’t let me buy any.”
“You shouted at the guy that you would ‘kiss in return for fish’.”
“Damn right I did,” she laughed.
Shikamaru chuckled. “And I thought I was the asshole.”
“You definitely are.”
“Tem, I just cooked you pasta at, like, twelve-a.m.”
“You’re right,” nodded Temari. “You’re a saint.”
He looked over at her and smiled, almost sadly. Choji’s flat was very small, a room with a bed and a wardrobe, and another with a small kitchen and a couch, but Temari had made herself right at home. He couldn’t help but admire how she did that. Not taking into account the fact that she was drunk out of her mind, he also couldn’t believed the way she was slowly sinking towards him, arms wrapping around him.
“You’re wonderful, Maru.”
His eyebrows raised. “Maru. New one.”
Temari looked up, hurt. “You don’t like it.”
“I don’t care,” he mumbled. “You go ahead.”
“Thank you,” she whispered, tracing patterns on his chest through his shirt. “You’re really wonderful.”
“You said.” If you couldn’t see inside his head, you’d have thought he was fed up of hearing that brilliant sentence. “You should go to sleep, Tem,” he added, changing the subject.
“I was stupid to make you feel so small. I made you feel like shit, didn’t I?”
“You didn’t,” he lied, letting her position his arms to hold her. “Just get some rest.”
“You’re wonderful, you know?”
Shikamaru smiled, the most real and fulfilling smile he’d had in a long time. “So are you, Tem. So are you…”
Okay done for now -rant anon
oops
(1) Okay so, I'm from Denmark. Aka I'm white. Which means apparently that I inherently have no culture. And that's what I'm sick of. I'm sick of people disregarding and disrespecting the culture we have. I so often hear "white people have no culture" "you're white stop acting like you have culture" and I'm sick of it. Danish culture and danish history is wildly mistreated everywhere in the world. People wear "Viking" helmets that have horns when that's wrong. Those were rarely (very rarely) used and
(2) Only for ceremonies, like weddings(if you were super special) or some special rituals for the gods. Horns were mainly for drinking, which, when you cheered it was important you banged the horns hard enough together that a bit of you drink spilled into everyone drink and vice versa. This was to avoid anyone poisoning the drinks (as they would have to drink it too) which is also why you start every meal with cheering and why it's super rude (like deadass you will be scolded) if you cheers with an
(3) Empty cup or if you don't drink immediately after. And don't get me started on what marvel gas done to our mythology, how they have morphed and twisted the stories into something unrecognisable. Thor and Loki are not brother. Loki and Odin are blood brother, meaning Loki is Thor's blood father. Thor's wives is supposed to have the longest golden hair as she is the goddess for harvest. Everything is wrong with the marvel interpretation. Everything. And people depicting Jörmungandr as a serpent
(4) Or even a dragon when it's a worm. A huge worm. Child of Loki btw, which many don't know and wrongfully say it's some random elder beast when that's wrong. And people not realising that just because white people don't have "flashy" "exotic" or otherwise "outthere" culture doesn't mean we have none. Our societies are just as coloured by culture as any other ethnicity and I'm so done with apologising for being born in a notheren country.
(5)  We have just as much history and culture as any other countrym and don't get me started on the "yeah but your history is enslaving other countries" fuck that. First off, we didn't enslave entire countries, we got slaves. YES GOT. Slaves were used in trades by everyone. We sold danish slaves, English slaves Irish slaves everyone could be a slave. The slaves gotten from Africa were mostly giving in trade by chieftains (aka they were already slaves, usually war slaves from attacking other tribes)
(6) Every culture in the entire history of humankind has taken slaves, from their own people and from other countries. In so done with people ignoring history just because America is that one loud child ™. As if being loud means your argument is valid. As if Americans aren't one of the biggest changers of history (aka they just write what they want). Like for god's sake, Denmark is a kingdom, we have traditions for watching the new years and the queen's prepares a speak. Our military regularly holds
(7) flight shows and other exercits for the queen and the countrym we literally have the oldest and the first flag in the world. First and oldest theme park in the world. the longest unbroken chain of monarchy in europe and even aome parts of asia. we are so much more than just white people without culture. just because some people are loud doesnt mean theyre valid. and dont get my started on braids and hairpins. apparently its wrong and racist to ca african braids and asian hairpins but when people
(8) ca dane braids and hairpins its okay and just " a normal braid you cant claim that" excuse you but normal dkesnt exist across cultures like that. ove seen people wear ceremonial warrior and ritual braids only recorded in dane history and call them normal and fashionable. like no, at keast, at the very least. recognise that those are not your culture's braids and that you dont have an inherent right to wear them. if you can do it for the africans why not for the rest of us.
(9) and ive seen people calling danes racist and say we ca when wearing hairpins when theyre a part of our history too. they arent exclusive to parts if asia, they were used by our ancestors too, in different ways, and different styles than im asia. we have a right to wear them too. -fuuny rant anon (more like angry rn) (lowkey dinoe but still upset) (also there's so many typos I'm so sorry)
(10) Oh and also. Not saying Vikings invested braids. Braids have been used everywhere and no one can claim the invention since it has appeared independently in multiple cultures. However people wear Viking style braids for fashion when those braids were for actual warriors, ready to join Valhalla. Young boys still learning to fight couldn't wear them. Some braids were only for significant fights, others were for rituals. Also getting back to something else that bothers me. Vikings weren't all warrio
(11) Rs. In fact, the word Viking wasn't even used until later. Danes or Norsemen were mostly farmers and merchants. Only a handful were warriors (as any country should have a decent fighting force in case of enemies) I'm sick of the Viking age being depicted as a while society of bloodthirsty men and boring women, when that's such a minor part of that time. Also women were allowed to fight as much as any man, they even held more power than men in some household or otherwise they were equal. We had
(12) equality between genders with women being in charge of economics, often gifted daggers in presents and even encouraged to cut of the jewels of any man rhat attempted to rape them. they would even sometimes hang these in their houses to discourage strangers from making the same mistake. in just. So done. So sick. So tired. Of people disregarding and generalising all white people as having the same lack of culture
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
okie so there’s a lot to unpack here. i just wanted to put a disclaimer here that i’m not very familiar with your culture so i apologize beforehand if i say anything offensive.
i think people just lump so many different races into “white”, which tbh is kind of dumb. and you’re right, every country has its own culture. it’s ignorant people that act like that doesn’t exist.
i wanna point out that you are not your ancestors!! you are NOT responsible for things they did.
i’m not exactly sure about the Marvel aspect because idrk what people say about Thor and Loki, but from what you mentioned it seems to be the main trigger for this rant? please correct me if i’m wrong
but yes, again to reiterate, you are NOT your ancestors. you should not be blamed for things they did. and for people who just ignore white culture, or more specifically Danish culture in this case, walk away from them. like, for real just walk away from them. if they’re not going to open their minds to at least find out a bit about the history, then they’re not worth talking to at all.
screw those ignorant people. they’re not worth it at all.

“That was rude, Jess. I’m hurt.” He covers his heart with both hands, holding onto his peck through his tank top tightly. “I was going to invite you inside but I’m rethinking it now.”
“It is what it is.” Jessica shrugs like the excitement she felt fluttering in her stomach didn’t just churn into a tiny panic. “It’s not like I particularly wanted to watch you play Xbox anyway.”
“I had something else in mind.”
read below - story page - playlist - banner by @booksncoffee - word count: 929
Jessica stands at the end of her driveway like Marissa Cooper from The OC except way less rich and so much happier. Happier because her best friend/lifelong neighbor just pulled into his own driveway across the street and she knows his parents aren’t there. She’s only seen him twice since she has gotten home from college for the summer, but both instances have almost been exactly like old times… only almost like old times due to the fact that now when she sees him emerge from the car, she enjoys his smile in a way that she never has before. The dimples on his cheeks look deeper and better. His lips glisten like they are trying to attract her attention.
He stops at the edge of his yard, directly across from her, wearing a black tank top and knee length jean shorts with a backwards baseball cap taming his curls. Leaning on the big brick mailbox, he questions, “You waiting on someone?”
“I don’t know. My good friend Harry promised me last night that we’d do something fun today.” Jessica bites the inside of her cheeks to keep from smiling too wide. The memories of the previous night feel like a dream sequence as they flash in her mind, causing her jaw to tighten that much more.
“Sounds like a cool dude.”
“Not nearly.”
“Hey!” He immediately took offense, grimacing. “I am the coolest guy you’ve ever known.”
“Nah.” She shakes her head once and grazes her teeth against her bottom lip, trying her hardest to keep her eyes from wandering away from his. “Ben has always been way more fun.”
Ben was the other guy who sat at the table where she first met Harry Styles in fourth grade. It was pure consequence that the kids who lived across from each other, but never spoke, got put in the same classroom and perhaps it was serendipity that they were both assigned to table three.
Harry has never admitted it, but Jessica knows for the year they shared a learning space with the other 9-year-old, he compared himself to Ben. That’s why for the last ten years, she has brought him up at Harry’s expense any chance she’s gotten.
An actual lump forms in her throat as she tries to swallow and come up with something witty to respond with.  She lets her eyes drift down his toned arm, covered with the tattoos he only gained once he went away and kissed by the sun thanks to the tan they got on their first day by the pool together.
It felt like her pause was a few minutes too long, but it really was just seconds before she thought to say, “Like what?”
Again, her thoughts wander back to the night before - alone in his basement, no lights on but the glow from the movie credits illuminating their faces. They sat closer than they ever had and spent more time stealing glances at one another than watching whatever rom com he had insisted on.
“Maybe another movie?” Harry’s lip split his face in half, smug at the way those simple words get Jessica to lower her eyes to the ground and kick at the gravel crunching underneath her. There’s no doubt that he is also thinking of the one moment in particular that she is hoping to recreate, and with the feel of him still fresh in her mind, there’s no way she’ll object his suggestion.
She lets him peer at her for a second, hopeful that he’ll admire the way her dress hugs her in all the right places and exposes her skin at even better ones. When she feels he’s looked long enough, she squares her shoulders and propositions, “I get to pick the movie this time?”
His hand is ruffling through his hair and his mouth is opening when a familiar car drives between them, pulling in behind Harry’s Camry. With the dramatics she feels in her soul, Harry sighs and hangs his head.
“Hiya.” His mom calls over to them as soon as she is out of the vehicle, her husband popping out of the passenger side.
It doesn’t occur to Jessica that she’s still standing on the other side of the street until Anne gives her a weird look. “Are you coming over, sweetheart? Or have you finally learned to keep your distance from this crazy one?”
“I’ve been trying to warn her for years.” Robin opens the trunk and begins unloading the grocery bags, displaying husband goals to the fullest extent.
“Are you guys making dinner?” Jessica ignores the teasing for her best friend and focuses on something way more exciting than Harry.
“Of course. We’re doing ultimate grilled cheeses.” Anne nods at the same time that Harry shakes his head, smiling, full of disbelief that someone could be so shameless in bumming food off people.
“Oh, well then, of course I’m coming over.” She tosses her blonde hair over her shoulder and walks the nine steps it takes her to get across the street, the prospect of melted cheese and Harry running high on her mind.
authors note:
so this is the new thing ive been working on. i came up with the idea while listening to summer friends by chance. (go listen to the very diverse playlist for this fic) its not so much about growing up in chicago like chance obviously but more about the vibe it gives me - extraordinary in totally ordinary settings.
i hope you like it! i hope you dont mind that im posting one scene at a time. i hope i achieved my goal of making less than 1k kind of fulfilling. if this goes over well, ill probably post another one in a few days. if not, ill be posting next wednesday along with another update of somewhere in between (my other friends to lovers lol, but much much longer chapters)
please let me know what you think!!! PLEASE!!! jessica? harry? what happened in the basement?? tell me!
thank you to ash @what-comes-from-within for editing this! she is seriously amazing and this story wouldnt be what it is without her!!!
thank you!!!

[FN] the guardian
my Isolated cabin creaked in the wind. my small glass of chilled bourbon keeping me warm as i sat alone at the small table.
The chair across from me sat empty, where before had been the kindest man I'd ever met.
I've just finished burying him, no funeral, just a pit in the earth and a small wooden cross. I swirled my bourbon and knocked some back.
The hunters found us while we were gathering wood.
I can still see his face, frozen mid laugh as the gunshot rang out. A bright light in my cold world snuffed out by someone afraid of us who are different.
I looked at my hands, still blistered from digging. I let my feathers fade from flesh tone to their typical blue and grey. they ruffled and layed smooth as I clenched the three finger claw at the end.
If only I'd payed attention, if only I'd looked a foot to my left creo could still be alive.
I morphed my hand back to its human shape, grabbing the glass and draining it. the warmth of the alcohol spreading through my chest.
I stood to toss another log in the fire place when my hearing sharpened.
Through the wind and snow I heard clumsy panicked steps. heavy breathing and slight sobbing. taking two steps I was at the door right as the maker of the sounds collapsed against it.
I hesitated, fingers an inch from the latch when I heard it.
"please, please let me in, I'm lost."
I knew that tone, desperation, fear... I knew them all too well.
I yanked the door open and caught the poor snow covered girl as she fell into me. Her clothes were far too thin for this weather, they looked like bed clothes but they were so covered in mud and snow I couldn't be sure.
I dragged her in as she breathlessly pleaded. I picked he asr up completely and laid her on my mattress before closing the door and stoking the fire.
ive seen too many frozen bodies in these woods, im not going to have another. I tossed another blanket over her and put my kettle on the top of the stove.
As I waited for the water to boil I grabbed one of her hands, gently massaging it to restore blood flow. As I moved onto her other hand I could see the panic and delirium Lift.
I let go of her hand and she turned her head to look at me, eyes glossy.
I looked back and placed my palm on her forehead, she was still incredibly cold.
"w-who are you?" she asked.
I paused at the simple question, quietly wondering who I really was before replying "Im just a keeper of the forest, I make sure mother nature's blessings dont fall into the wrong hands."
she nodded slightly and curled up a bit, something weighing heavily on her mind. The kettle whistled and I pulled it off the stove. I tossed a some pine needles into a mug and poured the water over it.
I set the mug down to cool to a drinkable temperature and asked the girl "how'd you end up here, you look like you just rolled out of bed."
she sniffled and shivered, pulling the blanket tighter around her as she softly stammered.
"I was In bed, I-In my trailer when I th-th-thought I heard someone outside. I went to look A-a-and I saw something c-c-come at me. I tried to get B-back inside B-but there was someone there behind me. I-I Ran until I S-saw your cabin."
A fowl taste spread across my tongue... Hunters did this.
I picked up the mug and and tilted her head up saying "drink this it should help with the cold" pouring a little past her lips. she swallowed and made a face but didn't refuse when I gave her another small sip.
It took a couple minutes before she was able to grab the mug and sit up.
she was nothing but human, I couldn't feel a blessing around her... she sipped the tea, looking at me like I was an alien before asking
"you know who did this, dont you..."
I nodded as my hearing sharpened again, this time I could barely hear the crunch of snow as several pairs of boots got closer.
I gritted my teeth together and said "hide under the blanket, no matter what you hear, no matter what you think is going on, dont look."
she froze and nodded, setting the mug down and pulling the knit cover over herself.
I picked up a couple pillows and tossed them on the bed to make the lump under the blanket look normal.
I took a deep breath and let the rage Idbeen bottling up slowly fill my body as I shifted, blue feathers unfurling from where they looked like skin.
my vision sharpening and narrowing as the bones in my legs creaked from changing to digitigrade.
I was the protector of these forests and everything in them. I could not let these hunters stay here any longer. The footsteps were getting closer as I clacked my way to the door, pulling it open and stepping outside.
the click and clatter of multiple weapons safety's being disengaged. I rolled my neck and gazed through the darkness.
four hunters in snow gear gazed back at me, their night vision goggles giving off a faint light.
"hunting humans now I see... how, Noble" I said quietly, the wind and snow now falling silent.
"whats it matter to you, a little glue and fur and she'll look just like the rest of you" one of them said.
I didn't say anything to that as I stared them down.
"well then, I see you've made your choice... now its time for me to make mine" I growled, lunging at the closest hunter.
He screamed and fired his rifle, missing me by inches as I fell on him and dragged my talons across his throat. he gurgled his screams away as I lunged backwards, a Bolt hitting me just below my armpit.
I grabbed the next hunter viciously by his jacket and hurled him into a tree, the branches snapping with the force.
The third hit me with a rifle round in the chest and I felt one of my lunfs collapse. he was next.
I tackled him and tore at his chest, the sharp talons at the edge of my arms cutting the flesh like butter as he shrieked in agony. I went to lunge for the fourth but he was ready, the broad buttstock of a shotgun hitting me in the face and throwing me to the ground.
"shot in the chest twice and still fighting, my my." that same deep voice chuckled "why do you fight so hard to protect someone who'd hate you if they knew you were one of the, heh heh, "Blessed" looks more like a curse to me."
I tried pushing myself of the ground but a boot to the face turned me over.
I'd lost this fight, I'm not going to survive even if he leaves. I took the deepest breath I could muster and said "because I don't care, this... is my forrest, and I'll protect everything in it.."
I rolled back onto my talons and pushed myself up to my feet, the hunter gazing bemusedly.
"from scum like you." I finished
he chuckled and said "alright" raising his shotgun to bear on my head.
I stared down the barrel accepting my fate as he squeezed the trigger.
click
the look of shock on the hunters face was refreshing as I lunged at him for the last time, tackling him to the ground as I clawed and tore at his face, his screams filling the night.
When he finally fell silent, I stood and stumbled back to the cabin. opening the door and tumbling in, I landed on my stomach and rolled over saying "you can look now, Im going to... take a very long nap"
I felt soft cold hands cradle my head as the girl said "no, stay with me, STAY WITH ME."
All I had the strength to say was
"I'll always be here, in the forrest" as the light faded from my vision and I sank into the cold darkness.

Is it Bad to Let Your Car Insurance Run Out Temporarily?
The insurance on one of my cars will run out in a few days, and the other one will run out at the end of this month. I was thinking of just waiting until the end of the month to get a new policy so that it will be more convenient and from now on I can renew both at the same time. Insurance companies use credit reports?
Just got notice from my insurance company (auto only) that they are going to be ordering insurance loss history reports and motor vehicle reports. They will help determine our eligibility for insurance and the price we may be charged. All well and good. But here's the kicker, the part I don't get. They also say that they may order additional consumer reports that include our credit info. They may use a credit-based insurance score based on that info. And they may use a 3rd party to develop our credit-based insurance score. Is this normal? Do many companies do this? Is this something that anyone else is outraged about, and is anyone fighting this? Can you put a relative from another state on your insurance plan?

AAA insurance question.?
I signed up for insurance for a home when I bought it 7 years ago. I told them I wanted full replacement which is what you have to have in order to get a mortgage. 7 years ago when I went down there to sign papers I specifically told him that I wanted to make sure everything was at full replacement value and my husband wanted to make sure the roof had full replacement value. I told the insurance guy that he is a roofer so that was a main thing he wanted me to make sure we had. The insurance guy laughed and made a little joke about it. So now, 7 years later we had hail damage and guess what.. my house does have full replacement value and all our property inside has full replacement value everything but the roof. Hmmm..imagine that. So I am sure I signed papers without reading the contract, I just took his word for it. Is there anything I can do? I am going to report this to the local new station. The insurance guy out right lied to me. This is in oklahoma. Is there a district office in oklahoma? I googled it and couldn't find anything. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.""

Anyone know a good Home Insurance company in California?
We recently purchased a new home to use as a renter. Our real estate agent told us to purchase and insurance policy from Old Republic to cover anything that could be wrong with the house since it was built in the 80's. An inspector looked at the house prior to our purchase and didn't notice anything with the property. Once the house was occupied by our renter, he noticed that the lights would shut off and stay off for a few hours. Old republic sent an electrician over and he told us that the prior owner had replaced a new breaker on top of a broken buster. He reported back to old republic and they stated that the insurance didn't cover anything that was not installed correctly. We were precise to inform our agent of the policy we needed for the house. We were not sure what work the house had done prior to our purchase so that is why we purchased the insurance. The policy we had was Old Republic Home Warranty Plan. That is what our agent advised us to get. Now, what can we legally do to help cover our out of the pocket expense of over a grand. Is there a policy that anyone would recommend for a rental house. Let me add that we do have home owners insurance but it only covers fires, floods, etc. (Please no unnecessary comments, this is an important question and need real honest advise.) Thank you in advance to all who respond and hopefully this could help others who read it as well.""

What if I don't have one and my car is perfectly fine? Please don't even get me started on bills! It freaks me out to know that companies just want money, money, money and wont stop at anything to get it. Can I turn my health bills from a car wreck into my health insurance?
I'll try to make this as short as possible. I was hit by another car, who fled the scene but I was able to get her license plate, made and model of her car. Her insurance is covering the body damage for my car but I'm having problems with the medical part of all this. In all, I have had two visits with my doctor and he sent me to the hospital for xrays. I have whip lash and nothing else. I live in Kentucky, which is a no-fault injury state (I have no idea what that means). The other driver's insurance company is not going to pay for my injuries since they are less than $1000. Which means I have to turn it in to MY car insurance company and pay my $1000 deductable or pay out of pocket, which will be about $800. Someone I work with mentioned that I can turn the bills into my health insurance company for them to cover it. Is that an option? I'm not at all familiar with any of this b/c this is my first experience having to deal with car insurances. I know it doesn't matter how I feel, but I'm really ticked that someone can hit my car, flee the scene, cause injuries to me, and then I am the one responsible to pay for the medical care. Does anyone have any experience with this? Can I turn this into my health insurance to avoid paying the $800 that I don't have? Thank you.""

Best Car Insurance for an 18 yr old?
I stay in Illinois and I just graduated from high school in December. I'm already enrolled in college and I'm taking two courses. In one class i have an A and the other I have a B. My GPA is still higher than a 3.0. I plan on getting a car really soon and I would like to know what is the best car insurance for me right now. I'm 18 years old, I was born in 1991, I do not yet own a license, and I've had my permit every since I was 15. The car I plan on getting is an 2004 honda accord with more than 100k miles on it or a 2004 Monte carlo with less than 100k miles on it. Which would be the best car for me to get? Can my parents insure my car without me on the insurance policy?
Ok, there's a little bit to the story. I want my mom to sign my car (which is in her name at the moment) over to me. She said that she would. The DMV people said that to change the car over into my name, I have to bring in my I.D. and proof of insurance. I'm wondering if they will switch the car into my name without me being listed on my mom's policy (the ins. car has her name on it.) Will the people at the DMV switch the car into my name, or do I have to have my own insurance, or be put on her policy?""

Insurance adjusters... how much can I expect to get for my car?
My car was stolen and I don't expect it will be recovered. I was curious about how much I can expect to get from my insurer. The loan is paid off, so I will receive 100% of the total offered by my insurer. Please see the car details below: 2002 Dodge Intrepid SE, 4 door 104,000 miles V6 automatic power doors, windows, driver seat cd player a/c I know I won't get the retail value. I feel a fair private seller price is about $4500. My research shows the trade in value is about $3600. I feel I should get something close to the private seller value as I know I won't get the retail value but should get more than trade in value. Is this a reasonable expectation? Input from actual insurance adjusters is appreciated. Given the car and miles, how much do you think I'll be offered?""

Car Insurance - Accident (Please Advise)?
Today an OAP came driving down a one-way carpark (trying to get my car parking space). In the process, she attempted to drive along the side of my car to get to the space, and scraped the side of my car and bumper. She said she would give me 20. But i said that i haven't got a clue how much the cost would be and im sure 20 wouldn't cover me. So she decided for us to drive to the local police station. The LSTO took both our details, and said for us to go through the insurance company, as the OAP was in the wrong and liable. When we left the police station she said she has previously written off a car earlier this year, and doesn't want to go through the insurance company! She gave me her home telephone number and said for me to get a quote and she'll pay for it. I got the quote - its 450. after she offered 20, i don't know if she will pay this amount! If we go through the insurance will i have to pay my excess. and what exactly happens!? I'm clueless!! I am fully comp...""

I've been pulled over last night no insurance and no L plates HELP ME PLEASE?
Hello, I'm a genuine person, who has had a bad past with motoring, 3 - 4 years ago i was a maniac, a complete ideot who defied everything that was said and told to him( been caught for no insurance and disqual driving and driving without a license x15 times but after relizing what a ideot i was i decided to go the straight and narrow, so i got my license back last august with 6 points on it, they aint due to clear till next year although they are dated 2009?! any way, i own a decent 09 bike, that isnt cheap and i was what i thought fully insured (otherwise i wouldnt have driven and risked loosing my bike) anyways i got pulled over last night for speeding, and it came apparant i wasnt insured :O i rang my girlfriend and got her to produce the paperwork, they couldnt get hold of my insurance company due to they were shut at 10pm at night :S so they decided to seize my bike!:@ they give me a gypsys warning about the speeding, and refered me to court for no insurance no L plates, my arguement is, after going home and checking my bank, i have been driving for 3 months uninsured ( i really had no intention of doing so) i had thought that when my giro money lands into my bank acc swintons took it out the same day so i never defaulted, but this is not the case and i have defaulted. so i have insured my bike immediately after relizing what has happened and im going to get it out the impound in a minute (15 hours later after being seized) but the genuine thing is i've always had a rear L plate till 4 days ago when it snapped and i was waiting on my giro to come to purchase a new one, however i know that is no excuse but its the truth! what can i say to the judge to not get myself banned! the L plates situation is difficult because there like1 to buy but i have 0 pence! and i run my bike of scrap yard petrol ( filtered runs sweet) and i will take full admission to only ever having one L plate on my bike and explain my situation but what can i say or do so i dont get banned!? im really stuck with this one, it really is annoying as i had no intention to drive without insurance?! thanks guys""
