I know fan service is common in anime, but I really feel like she gets consistently devalued by the narrative? so i read the translation today of the whole event and it's just unbelievably bad , I'm not sure if you had a chance to look through . and takashi who's basically a little hiiro but actually he's a child of producer rinne once had with god knows if their father or just someone from amagi family ? it feels like a really bad fanservice and I'd like to hear you thoughts if you read this . it's okay if no and you can't really comment on that but i couldn't keep silent so forgive my off topic ramble .

i just read the story myself. its alright, not much worse than any of the others, just hard to follow because its all rinne being rinne. its not really that fanservicy imo, i thought id hate it more than i do . my biggest gripe is akiras choice of dialogue for aira . again. i really wish he would stop doing that but thats besides the point.

edit: i also wanted to add that the part where tatsumi and mayoi are worried about hiiro and aira and theyre like "theyll be fine theyre strong capable people" and it immediately cuts to aira screaming bloody murder absolutely sent me

heres a summary of the story from what ive gathered . this is a long one so ill put it under a read more

rinne set up an elaborate scheme to protect the privacy of his hometown. when rinne first went to the city he saw an unnamed idol that inspired him to become one himself. that idol retired and became a teacher at an all girls school (i wanna bet its kimisaki academy. thats unimportant to the story tho.), and his producer , akan, was left struggling until she met rinne and began producing him. unfortunately the job became too much for her and she began to crack under the pressure, and had to retire for her own health. rinne told her about his hometown, where she would be able to live out the rest of her life in peace. to ensure no one would go looking for her , they set up a plan— they pitched a fake mystery program where she would go investigate a phenomenon in the area of the village, and "disappear mysteriously". the footage would never be released because of the "incident", and as long as they didnt find her she would be declared dead after being missing for long enough, therefore closing the resulting missing person case and leaving her to be unbothered and truly leave her past behind and start over. while she was living in the village she met rinnes father, and they eventually got married and had a kid, takashi (its never mentioned that hes their kid, but rinne says his father wishes he could make takashi his heir instead of rinne, implying hes his son) . he looks like hiiro because the amagi family has strong genes (and also likely because the devs could repurpose kid hiiros live2d model). rinne noticed his fans were getting increasingly curious about his hometown and worried that the extra attention would eventually cause trouble for the people in his village, and by extension disrupt the peaceful life akan had built there. his solution was to "reveal" his hometown in a tv program and satisfy his fans curiosity so theyd drop the subject. but he couldnt just make a program for no reason, so he pitched the matrix event , part of which would be hosted at the "amagis village". he didnt want it to be a large scale event, so he contacted the retired idol akan used to produce and asked him to pose as akan to produce the event since he was the only other person to have known her well enough to impersonate her and capitalizing on the fact that no one remembered who akan is or what she looked like. anzu ended up getting involved and as a result it turned into a much bigger event than rinne intended for it to be . the "village" that the event was hosted in was actually the contact point for the actual village, a place that looked convincing enough but was really just used as a meeting point for the village to import resources from the city without exposing their real location. but of course in typical rinne fashion, he only reveals this to the rest of alkakurei at the very end, so everyone was just very confused the whole time. rinne also claims takashi is his and anzus kid at first, but no one believes him of course because that makes no sense.

tldr; rinne is worried that his fans are getting too curious about his hometown and might eventually lead to it being exposed, so he stages a fake reveal to satisfy his fans curiosity.

i sorta like it. its not completely outlandish by enstars standards and it ties up a few loose ends about rinnes backstory (like what happened to his career as a solo idol before his duo unit with niki, why he became an idol, and who produced him before he met anzu) as well as further solidifying his character as someone who genuinely cares about the well being of others and will fight to protect them by any means necessary even if theyre not part of his life anymore .

now to preface maybe i should say im not particularly interested in the fucking aspect of selfcest, it just doesnt do much for me beyond what selfcest as a premise is already doing for me, and what im far more into is like choking or stabbing each other to death (like in mozaik role) or if one of them is already a corpse

i went at it in sort of a center out approach bc the question that prompted this was "does jerking off count as selfcest" which is obviously no bc there has to be at least 2 bodies i think

and tbh now that ive had more time to think on it, do you even know what "exactly you" is? is it possible to know the entirety of "who you are"? i wouldnt say i know even 60% of who i am. would you recognise you if you passed you on the street? (although i guess if you did "pass you" on the street, then that other you wasnt "exactly you" anyway) or maybe, would another you who is "exactly you" be completely unrecognizable to you yourself? in the way 100% pure food compounds taste sterile? this is sort of why the concept of "exactly you" is just a hypothetical thought experiment to me, it just serves to emphasize what selfcest is about.

the green zone is sort of your standard selfcest, most selfcest falls here. i dont feel like i have to elaborate too much since im not trying to classify the taxonomy of the different sources of selfcest (i.e. cloning, mimics, time travel, splitting a person, just plain alternate universe, etc etc) and thats not the point of this, since all types of selfcest are just a means to an end (selfcest), and selfcest is also just a means to an end (character study)

the yellow zone is a bit hard to put into words but its like, not exactly "2 of the same person", but it still has the spirit of selfcest. most mimics would fall here. seimei and haruaki are actually in this category i think because theyre different enough people. you could say haruaki is seimei, but idk if you can say seimei is haruaki.

now white haru and normal haru. thats SOLIDLY in the green zone thats THE MOST classic definition of selfcest (a la hetalia 2P). thank u tanaka mai for the fanservice.

"My feelings on" part 4: into the light once again and how it only takes a few gross tropes to taint what could've been a perfect piece of work.

I remember seeing the trailer for it so many times back in 2018 but I never got to read all of it since Tappytoons has a 30 ad policy just to get enough to buy on chapter. It's really good, wholesome families, sibling dynamics, a smart villain, and a magic system so the fantasy aspect wont be abandoned for cheap fanservice.

The protagonist used to be known as Alisa, 4th princess of Edenverre and was mistreated by family and servants with the exception of her younger sister, the golden child Marianne who is later revealed to be the mastermind behind the false accusations of poisoning Marianne Alisa faces. She is executed by her own family and comes back as the princess of the enemy empire Elmire, now known as Aisha she swears to one day get justice on her sister.

The revenge plot may be overrated but Into the light does it well enough that I could look past it. The politics and world building are fantastic and the element spirits low-key reminded me of gacha studio or genshin impact characters, and characters like Ashley and Mina aren't enemies for Aisha to defeat, they are people who make mistakes and are allowed to grow.

My favorite part of course is the villainess Marianne, she geninuely scares the hell out of me with her uncanny valley vibe she emits, there's always something so off about her and she reminds be almost of a monster who would star in the conjuring. Marianne has the ability to brainwash others and while I can't tell which, she either steals Alisas body or she causes an illusion affect to alter her and Alisas forms to the family of Edenverre (Really confusing but i like it) and while Marianne doesn't have as much screen time as I wished I enjoyed her while I could, because into the light treats Marianne with respect as an antagonist.

Marianne barely showing up may not even be a bad thing entirely, because while revenge is part of it, the story is built more on healing from your trauma and surrounding yourself with positive influences so it's reasonable that most chapters would center around Aishas powers and her family.

My only small gripe is a petty one but I'm pretty sure the author is an only child 😭. I'm not saying that Aisha and Ysis should be full on murdering eachother but their so unbelievably protective of eachothers feelings to the point of Ysis disliking the idea of any man wanting to marry his sister in the future, ive even seen some fans get concerned that it was going into a brothe-sister thing (especially when he was included as an option for men for Aisha to be attracted to ick)

As someone who has lived with 3 siblings, the excitement for a new baby sibling dies after 3 weeks at most. But hey, they do got a large palace, maybe Ysis just had the luxury of not needing to listen to his baby sister cry at night. I also don't understand why Ysis would immediately believe that Aisha was a reincarnated soul that could remember her past. Like I know he loves her but if my sister started to tell me she was the executed princess in a past life I'd be more concerned.

I wish I could say that was the only thing I didn't like.. unfortunately as much as I love into the light once again, it doesn't stay great for very long. That was my only small gripe because I have a lot of large problems with the love interests

Aisha is 14 and turns 15 at some point but for most of the series, she's a young teen and all her love interests are leaps and bounds older then her. Starting with the big one, Luminas, a 2000 year old king of light who meets Aisha WHEN SHES STILL A BABY!

"Damn, too early, ill give it 13 more years."

Not even the second male lead is safe, Veon is the youngest of the male leads and he's basically watched Aisha grow up since he was Ysis's friend. I can't remember his exact age but I know he is at least 20 which is just... that doesn't make it any better!. There's also apparently some dude named Arsen who's also at least 25 years old and one of Alisas childhood friends, I've heard people say he's another love interest but I haven't seen anything confirmed myself so I'll just hope my 2nd favorite character isn't going to be going after minors.

I'm starring to think the author has an age-gap fetish at this point.

Quick thing I wanted to bring up, a lot of the comments on this chapter have been uncomfortable not just with the age gap and pedophilic weirdness but also this dress. It doesn't look bad but it's built like a maternity dress and for some reason she looks pregnant in a lot of shots which just.. I'm gonna hope we're all just overthinking that one because the last thing this manhwa needs is implications that Aisha will get pregnant young.

While there is a lot of people who are rightfully uncomfortable with the 2000 year age gap, there is also a lot of people justifying it. "He treats Aisha well though!" "It was normal in that time!" "Your just being too soft! Let Aisha be happy!!"

Let me bring up some real history for minute.

This is Isabella of Valois during her wedding with Richard II, she is the youngest bride currently known about in the medieval era

Isabella was only 6 years old when she married her 29 year old husband.

This is Margaret Beaufort.

She was 12 when she got married to her 24 year old husband and 13 years old when she gave birth to Henry VII

And probably one of the more well known examples, Catherine Howard.

She could have been as young as 15 and as old as 17 when she married Henry VIII who was 49.

Now did these examples make your skin crawl? Did they make you feel disgusted? Well they should, just because it was normal in that era, doesn't mean it's all of a sudden fine. There isn't even the cheap excuse that Aisha is technically over 20 given her mental age since Alisa died at 14 and Aisha is very clearly still mentally a young teenager.

Luminas and Veon are definitely nowhere near the personalities of men like Henry VIII but that also doesn't make it okay either. Especially when Veon basically watched Aisha grow up and she's his friends little sister! and Luminas knew her since she was an infant. Would it be that hard for Aisha to at least be a young adult and not a 14 year old. Because it really feels like Luminas is waiting for her to be legal since he already tells her she's his ideal woman when she's still a 14 year old.

Conclusion: Into the light once again is a beautiful story about healing from your trauma and the writting and the characters are just amazing. But it all feels like it's backpeddled when it's so heavily romanticizing or just straight up ignoring the fact that Aisha is basically a grooming victim, the relationship is practically covered in glitter to make it look better, "Sure Luminas is 2000 years old and Aisha isn't even an adult but at least he's so nice to her and he teachers her how to summon spirits! He'll always protect her!" Because while Luminas will (hopefully) never hurt her. Real groomers absolutely will. It pushes the message that as long as the man who is old enough to be your dad is sweet to you and protects you, then it's fine if he has feelings for you. Intentional or not. A story about healing from trauma supporting relationship where ones a child and ones a god with a mature mental age to boot is kind of like when movie producers fucked up the original meaning of Lolita.

- relationships among the gods are presented as MUCH more heterosexual than reality. and it’s freak shit too. ooc izuru/junko dynamic throws hajime in there as some toxic hatefuck polycule when the two of them would both rather die. kazuichi and sonia’s “coparenting kiibo” drama gets turned into sexual tension when sonia blocked his number well before she ever kidnapped adopted kiibo. despite having comparable strength and potential for destruction as the rest of the big five, makoto gets woobified BAD.

- when gay couples Are represented they’re all bad lmfao. byakuya & mondo respectively abusing poor sweet innocent easily-manipulated makoto and taka (<- as if everyone doesn’t know it’s makoto and taka that are dogwalking byakuya + mondo 99% of the time). junmikan and sayakan depictions are fanservice bait and gross while other Observably Non-Abusive lesbian relationships are downsized to the background.

- fuck it. po!universe lore olympus equivalent is secretly ghostwritten by junko feeding delusions to an opportunist web artist. acting out all of her fantasies and doing things she knows will piss the others off. the rest of the big five are presented as her doting harem and her rivalry with makoto VASTLY overestimates the reciprocation of junko’s fixation and sexual tension. probably chooses someone she knows will do a dogshit job on purpose tbh that’s funny as fuck

im not even sure this is an unpopular opinion but. i dont give a shit about the good queer rep/bad queer rep arguments. its a 30+ year old series with the majority of the games coming out before 2010. none of these characters are gonna be handled well. i still think the canon/subtextually queer characters are really interesting, even if they fall prey to stereotypes or the whole "queer-coded villain" thing (or in the case of metal gear where a not insignificant amount of the villains are explicitly queer)

or the ppl who get upset that ocelot HAS to be gay. why do you care. if someone wants to make him bi, let them. it doesnt hurt you. hes still queer either way.

kpop wasn't only meant to be ear candy and nice dances it was to keep the youth trusting the people in power and focused on idols rather than what was going in the country like crazy work hours, chaebols and unfair imbalance of power. Being that there is an american military base in seoul for decades no korean could go inside its clear its deeper than any individuals preferences.

Also take into consideration many trainees are underage, threatened with being kicked out if they are caught dating the opposite gender, watched by managers and staff 24/7 kept away from their parents, most have about a 6th grade education because they spent a majority of their time training. Insiders and fans have caught physical abuse on camera, idols have spoken out about being severely scolded as trainee's, bullied by grown adults for looks, weight, acne, social status and if that isn't a recipe for dissociation they also give the idols different names for their fans to call them that they must answer to. They also must only give affection to members of their same gender or fans may disown them and call for them to be kicked out of the group and start bullying them online and in person.

So if all that isn't proof enough that the yaoi culture kpop thrives off of is not about love at all but about psychological manipulation fr its very roots idk what else I can say. But really idc what people believe but don't act like the company is against your ship they groom those boys and girls in every sense of the word. Kji is naturally feminine which only make people think he is simply in control of everything including his crop top era. Really and truly I believe he's stuck at the age he was when his parents pushed him to be famous when he was a cute ballerino that people mistook for a girl that got lots of attention from other kids and older girls.

Male western popstars date and marry and still have a career but kpop idols gotta fight to stay alive even if they have western fans. The national enquire alone has five years of stories planned for all major celebs korea is no different. Well, I've rewatched the whole s2 today.

As I suspected, I feel less angry now. I mean, it is a little bit of a mess. I couldnt keep myself from thinking alternative ways of getting to the same plot points but with a more satisfactory outcome. I still have a lot of things to say about the finale.

But anyway, I dont think it was THAT bad. I did spend most part of the time smiling like an idiot. There were plenty of good ideas, funny bits, great performances, cool designs.

And I know this is a super unpopular opinion, but I believe Good Omens s2 was actually way worse written. I only bring this up bc Ive seen a lot of people comparing them and considering GO the good one and Im honestly so confused 😅. The only worthy thing for me was seeing Michael Sheen and David Tennant having fun. OFMD gave us so much more than that (actually, the big problem to me is that they tried to give too much when they just didnt have the means).

In any case, I look forward a s3 because, I hope, they'll deal better with the stuff and maybe we even get more juice on the things that feel undeveloped right now. Tv shows should be allowed to have weaker seasons without the people wanting to burn things, specially when they had to adjust to so many production changes. Of course there were questionable decisions and the taste of dissapointment will last a long time, but if you've been watching shows long enough, you know this things happen, and that theres always room (and hope) for improvement.

The only thing Im going to complain is that, for all the fanservice they gave us, there was a tragic lack of the top1 fanart theme: Ed and Stede cuddling together in bed, taking a nap.

Do you feel comfortable mentioning/listing the other creators youd exclude? Trying to be more critical of the games I play, but sometimes its hard to find these things out with the language barrier and the small fandom spaces.

oh hmm. well, as much as id like to pretend i am, im not quite the all-knowing rpg maker god, so while dsp is the obvious one, i was going to research any other games im unfamiliar with that have been submitted to me and make sure theres nothing extremely bad in them. honestly, i have quite a few problems with several creators, even ones im a fan of. i take issue with quite a few things miwashiba and nankidai have done, for example, though i like their work alot. its always good to be critical and examine the issues in things you like!

the only other creator i can think of, just off the top of my head, who i would say is kind of similar to dsp (in the sense that i do not think there is much to be salvaged since the problems outweigh the good aspects), is charon. yanderella is their most popular game, as well as the dark side of red riding hood. like dsp, charon's constant use of sexual violence for shock value combined with poor taste fanservice permeates all their work. actually, not too long ago, i played some of their more recent games to see if they had changed and improved since their early popular games. i can confirm they had not improved on the aspects of horribly, horribly handling sexual violence as a theme. (one of their games is also.... weirdly transphobic....?) and spacelight studio is the company behind kio's adventure, which is a game ive not touched personally, but based on what ive heard about it....its an awful game that follows the sort of jumpscare/trap rpg maker horror stuff, but uses the horror to sexualize the underage main character. ive heard it described as little more than an excuse for tortureporn. i believe kio's adventure is the only rpg maker game by spacelight studio.

...sorry for the long-ish reply. im not good at writing short answers when i have something to say. but. um! while these are creators i would personally say cross the line, im not a judge or anything. i think the works ive mentioned are all very harmful and contain much more horribly handled, problematic content than anything meaningful and worthwhile. some people will disagree and think im being too harsh. other people would probably be even harsher with regards to games i enjoy as well. i think generally the idea of 'irredeemable media' is quite a...dumb and meaninless phrase, really, since its so subjective. some people might consider games i enjoy, like your turn to die or angels of death, to be "too problematic" and irredeemable. - so i try to keep that in mind. the games and creators mentioned here isnt like a definitive list of games to avoid, nor is it complete by my standards, but.... they're just creators, and games, which i believe don't have nearly enough good qualities to outweigh the extreme problems. people can disagree if they want, but i do feel like i'm being quite fair in my statements.

i went off about this in a mutual's personal server even more than i posted/ranted about here on tumblr because it really pisses me off, especially when you visit low-rating reviews of any mbd book, extra especially fugitive telemetry (like "how Dare this author whose work i love give me a novella after a full-length novel release?!" it's so fucking ungrateful! and it demonstrates such a disgusting lack of basic reading comprehension).

here's one review i saw posted the month i picked up the book and happened to be using goodreads to track my progress at the time, for example:

out of ideas?! it's one of the more tonally different stories in the series. when i finished the book for myself, i came back to this review and i just did not know how someone could ever say something like this. did we even read the same book?! is she "out of ideas" or did she give people another short-form story that was packed with concise and exacting language, tackling a multifaceted web of brand new interactions that make murderbot's personhood that much more dimensional, and they turned their nose up at it because "ugh 🙄 why can't we just have more full-length novels full of stuff that i can pretend is evidence of my fantasy OTP ship being canon"? the idea that a story is "low-effort" to "produce" simply because it's short is such a fucking insult to writers who know anything about writing, especially short-form masters like martha wells. these books are raw concentrated emotion.

to use a food comparison, because i've been getting emotional about the bear recently, it's like comparing a family/holiday feast to an 8-course meal from a star-ranked restaurant. they are both incredibly valuable, in different ways. the novellas are basically 'the perfect bite', they are incredibly well-written, they're rounded stories about rounded characters. intricate, delicate, plated to perfection, and at the end you realize that you've had enough of these small courses (chapters) that it's like. wow, you realize how fulfilled you are; every 'level' engaged is maxed out... and a feast made to feed an entire family like the full-length novel(s) (since the next book is a full-length novel, too) is hearty, it's quantity from a quality-minded author, it's nourishing, it's fulfilling, it's going to get a lot of mileage from every character included. these are different experiences prepared by the same chef. trust that she's going to treat you well. you know?

but you don't let diners into the kitchen to make changes to the food everyone else is going to eat. i might be going a little far with the metaphor but i swear to fucking god if tor.com does the fanservice shit to mbd i'm going to lose my fucking mind.

watched legends of tomorrow 7.06 gwyn davies sad backstory omg 😢 fascinated by the way it echoes constantine’s backstory but still feels distinct because davies is so fundamentally different from constantine and had such a different response to that traumatic event. i’m glad he’s gay as well. i suspected he was gay from the last episode bc of him and sara having that moment where she tells him she married a woman but i wasn’t sure and i’m glad that i was right. i love that it was zari 1.0 who bonded with him, i’m guessing she and nate are leaving the show halfway thru the season and this was a strong last episode for this version of zari. because of course survivor’s guilt was her big thing as well, until she did actually bring back the people she lost. so she was the best person to talk to davies about his trauma. i like that davies feels religious guilt over being gay, like obviously that sucks for him but it’s refreshing since no other gay people on the team have had issues with being gay and i like to see a diversity of gay experience. if only this show had a season 8 so all of this could be explored further......alas. i’m still a nate/zari hater but it was very cute when nate said he does wanna move in with zari into the totem. bad writing but that scene was cute and well-acted. i still think gary and nate shouldve banged. but i guess gary and gideon banged instead which is fine. gideon and gary are so cute together like i know we’ve seen them together before but now that gideon is human it feels different and i really like their dynamic. they are both the tarot card of the fool so it’s perfect to put them together. i liked seeing astra and ava hang out, i think they’re similar enough that they understand each other but different enough for them to play off each other in interesting ways. and ava chopping firewood was surely some kind of fanservice. not sure how to feel about whatever theyre doing with bishop. i do enjoy evil gideon and the evil waverider theme, that amuses me. and when she was like hal from 2001 space odyssey i was like ha ha referance. but i don’t want bishop to be redeemed bc even if he didn’t turn EVIL evil yet he still made the ava clones which is a horrible thing and i hope the show remembers how horrible that is. it was funny how he escaped via toilet though. there is something that ive been hoping will happen and this episode has gotten my hopes up about that possibly happening. i will not say exactly what it is yet but we shall see......
