Hello um may I ask a question? I just started my first ever fic when usually I write my own things away from any fandom. Iâve been posting to ao3, I spend hours upon hours getting a chapter done, proof read and edit about 30 times before Iâm satisfied enough to post it, I try to keep it as original as possible however Iâm quickly losing motive, I donât care for numbers or views but this has made me care a little. Iâve found that a lot of fics that are written by someone whoâs first language isnât English do grab a lot more attention, the language barrier is obviously not a problem ive read many fics that Iâve thoroughly enjoyed who were written by a non English speaking person. The fics Iâm referring to have very lose and sporadic storylines, they donât make any sense because of the lose ends all through it, itâs very âand this happens and then this happens and now this happensâ but nothing is explained, these fics gain almost three times the attention mine does and Iâm confused at what I could be doing wrong. Iâm not entirely new to writing but I feel like my effort is being wasted. I started it for myself and not to please every person who finds it but seeing this has definitely knocked my confidence⊠what could be the problem?
It depends on the fandom. The pairing. The following the author has already. I have a semi-decent following from posting fic for nearly 20 years now, but when I get into a new fandom it still takes a bit for me to establish myself. When I first dropped DFT I actually got annoyed at how little attention it got, as it had been a while since I wrote for a new fandom and straight-up forgot that there's a bunch of people on the other side of the fence who have no idea who I am and how I write, and that will always be a majority no matter how many dedicated readers you have that will follow you from fandom to fandom. But I kept posting, and eventually, it got the attention I had first expected it to get.
And believe me, I understand how fucking annoying it is when what you feel is sub-par fic gets crazy attention when you feel like yours is better and it's not fair that everyone loves something that has terrible characterization, or a shitty/disjointed plot, more than yours that you know is better. But that can be due to a couple factors: one, the pairing is very niche, so people can't really be picky and tend to just latch on to whatever's around; two, the author had been around since the beginning and has been long established as one of the "founding fic writers" in the fandom, so the quality no longer really matters as they are popular regardless; three, its a fandom that just enjoys "simple" fics like that - especially if the majority of the fandom is younger, like teenagers or early 20s; or four, your fic just hasn't been discovered by enough people yet, and you need to give it time.
there really is so many factors to take into account, but the main thing is to not get discouraged. i know feedback is invaluable to your self-esteem, believe me, but at the end of the day you wrote this story for yourself more than others, and as someone who constantly goes back and reads my own writing, you'll want to finish it one day or the one getting the most pissed about the lack of ending will be yourself.

Name: hi, i am nyx Age: 20 years old Writing Blog URL(s): jungcity.tumblr.com | v-asl.tumblr.comÂ
Nationality: filipino Languages: english, filipino Star Sign: pisces! MBTI: infp-t Favorite color: white accentuated by silver Favorite food: itâs sweet and spicy chicken garlic!! Favorite movie: hmmm, itâs prolly flipped because that movie was so cute :,)Â Favorite ice cream flavor: rocky road!! Favorite animal: itâs gonna be cats!! although i love lions so much because of narnia :,( Coffee or tea? What are you ordering? coffee :,) Go-to karaoke song: i donât sing agskh the world would end if i wouldÂ
What has been one of the biggest factors of your success (of any size)? i think itâs me writing about jaehyun??? since heâs the king of fanfiction, especially in ncity nowadays.Â
What fandom(s) do you write for? nct + wayv
When did you post your first piece? three days ago!! that would be august 4 i guess???
Do you write fluff/angst/crack/general/smut, combo, etc? Why? i donât really much write fluff since i donât have any idea how to write a good fluff!! :( this has been an issue every time i write some auâs. so im always ending up writing and focusing more on angst. itâs the genre i know best. well, crack⊠itâs hard to make the readers laugh when you canât even make their tooth ache from sweetness with your fluffy writings. :( smut⊠i donât write smut explicitly any more. iâm more on the suggestive side rn.Â
Do you write OCs, X Readers, Ships...etc i write OCâs especially when im writing a series!! to diversify my writing. but i usually am on the x reader side. ships? not that much.Â
Why did you decide to write for Tumblr? uhm, back in 2017, i was searching for some website where i could publish my works. ive always been a tumblr-girl since i am that wanna-be-aesthetic kinda person :D then i had found that i could write and publish on tumblr so yeah thatâs pretty much why i am on this app rn
What inspires you to write? ooh, music has been a great help for sure!! whenever i donât feel like writing something, i always listen to music and the idea would flow like a river. classic poems helps, too. :)
What genres/AUs do you enjoy writing the most? supernatural!auâs, fantasy!au, medieval!au. i feel like itâs easier to write something out of pure fantasy. i have a hard time writing modern!auâs since i lack the humor and the knowledge for modern slangs.Â
What do you hope your readers take away from your work? ooh, i always always always am careful with the way that i craft all my works. i try to feel what my characters feel to give them a certain validation. i put my shoes on the scenarios i have in mind even though i havenât yet experienced everything ive written. and i do love writing strong female characters, whether itâs ocâs or female readers. thatâs my main priority whenever i write. and i want them to know that girls could do just as much everything boys could. women are powerful.Â
What do you do when you hit a rough spot creatively? i read a lot to get back on my foot. i also try to re-read my past works so iâd be inspired to better my writing on my current draft.
What is your favorite work and why? Your most successful? my favorite work is the one iâm still writing rn, which is entitled 505. itâs a hendery fic in which he is a bandit and the female reader is a sacristan. itâs my fave since i relate myself so much to the female reader. :) my most successful one is the childhood best friends!au taeyong x female reader. itâs about to reach 600+ notes i guess? and im so grateful of all the feedbacks i got from it.Â
Who is your favorite person to write about? itâs jaehyun and hendery :)Â
Do you think thereâs a difference between writing fanfiction vs. completely original prose? character wise, perhaps. since you already have a face value in fanfiction, but in an original prose, you would have to craft everything from 0.Â
What do you think makes a good story? a good story is something that doesnât romanticize the bad things going on in the world. a good story is something that is emphatic to the hardships of others. a good story is something that gives comfort to those who are in the dark. a good story is something that boosts the hearts of the readers and makes them feel things!!Â
What is your writing process like? first, i think of a plot! (this happens oftentimes when im washing the dishes) when i have the plot, i think of the ending. when i have the ending, itâs time for me to device a fitting title. and the plot would develop from then on.Â
Would you ever repurpose a fic into a completely original story? i donât think so⊠this is scary. since some people think of fanfics as delusional works from delusional authors. itâs kinda sad.Â
What tropes do you love, and what tropes canât you stand? i love love love enemies-to-lovers trope!! one that i couldnât stand and do my best to not read is probably⊠hmm⊠no, i love all tropes!! i just love e-t-l most!
How much would you say audience feedback/engagement means to you? it means a ton. since it could really boosts me up. heavy sigh. itâs the best thing when you write somethingâ the feedbacks. even though itâs a simple reblog with the â#ATKSHSKSHSKAHAKSGAHGEGSJAâ or â#myfaveâ. i would smile like an idiot whenever i read it.
Dream job (whether you have a job or not)? i want to be a successful writer someday!
If you could have one superpower, what would you choose? teleportation!!Â
If you could visit a historical era, which would you choose? ancient greek + victorian era
If you could restart your life, knowing what you do now, would you? yes!! im so hell deep in indecision right now so i want to restart to make everything right
Would you rather fight 100 chicken-sized horses or one horse-sized chicken? 100 chicken-sized horses!!
If you were a trope in a teen high school movie, what would you have been? enemies-to-lovers trope agsksj LOL
Do you believe in aliens/supernatural creatures? YES!!! perhaps they are lurking somewhere here on earth and we donât know it yet ;)
Fun fact about yourself that not everyone would know? oh⊠i donât really know what to write. i donât give much attention to my personal details agsksj
Do you think fanfic writers get unfairly judged? yes!! ugh, thereâs this recent issue wherein stan twt called fanfic writers as freaks. and it broke my heart. i mean, most fanfic writers get inspirations from their idols and that shouldnât be a bad thing. we arenât delusionals as one might think. we are simply doing our craft.Â
Do you think art can be a medium for change? yes!! our countryâs hero âjose rizalâ had somehow stirred the nationality of the people back in the old days because of his writings. i do believe that art changes things!! it has the ability to pierce the heart of the people. Â
Do you ever feel there are times when youâre writing for others, rather than yourself? yes. i feel this whenever im writing smut. i mean, letâs be real, your works would do better once youâve included some steamy smut scenes in it. when i was writing my first fanfic after three years, i didnât think that iâd ever include smut. but the fear of not getting feedbacks crept up in me, so i forced myself to write some sexy scenes. i know thatâs like⊠weird. but iâm trying not to dwell on feedbacks any longer. and i also have decided not to write explicit smut anymore. honestly, i feel better now that i donât force myself to do something that i think would please others rather than me.
Do you ever feel like people have misunderstood you or your writing at times? uhm, as far as i can remember, nopeâ still hasnât felt that way. :)
Do your offline friends/loved ones know you write for Tumblr? yes!! my best friends irl knows about it. my sister knows. my parents are also aware of my passion in writing, and they do know that i write. but where and what, that remains obscured from them :DÂ
What is one thing you wish you could tell your followers? that itâs okay to be vulnerable. itâs okay to make mistakes. itâs okay to fail sometimes. itâs okay to feel things. because like a good book, there is always a character development and you have the pen to write your own version of happy endings.Â
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers who might be too scared to put themselves out there? iâve been there: the scared and conscious part. but one thing i would say is, you have to dare yourself!! you wonât know how your writing would have impacted so many lives and touch the hearts of people if you wonât grab your pen or your gadget and start your draft.Â
Are there any times when you regret joining Tumblr? nope, there arenât. the community has been lovely to me ever since i started writing. :,)
Do you have any mutuals who have been particularly formative/supportive in your Tumblr journey? yes!! oh my god. iâd like to take this opportunity to thank my mutuals whoâs done me nothing but kindnessâ @legendnct (hannah), whoo!! you know how much i love you, right? thank you for always being there to listen to me. :) @cloudysuh des, since day one youâve supported me. i couldnât ask for more. thank you for the never-ending praises, keyboard smashes, for the tags, and for always boosting me up. @bohoes georgie, you know i love you. since 2017 youâve been with meâ praising my works and supporting me. thank you. @cherr-e cherry!! thank you!! for teaching me how to better my writing. i hope endless happiness for u and please take care. @writermoon hello my babe!! thank you so much for reading my works with such vivid imaginations. i love you. @jaeyongf amy!! the bestest person :,) thank you for always leaving me feedbacks!! thank you for being kind to me. thank you for always supporting me. i love you guys so much and letâs be mutuals for a long time!!Â

Enchanted For A Moment: Reds
Pairing: Blossom x Brick (Reds)Â
Fandom: PPGÂ
Rating: Teen and up..slight cussing
Royal Au
Im literally dying for this au and i dedicate this to all the lovely people in our discord and im in love with our fandom.Â
I know I know ive been on a ppg high lately but im riding this one out for a long time. Also I did little to no research, idk the time period but its old so have at it. I hope that you enjoy!
Chapter One: Golden Doors and Spider SilkÂ
She hated this castle, this stupid kingdom and all above, her. Princess Morbucks. The girl was so spoiled that her father, the king, named his daughter Princess as if she wasnât going to be addressed like that otherwise. She didnât know why she kept coming back to teach her these lessons. French, English, History, she didnât bother to learn or practice in the slightest.
âPrincess, not many women know how to read and write. Imagine how extraordinary that would be to be such a diverse leader.â She had told her, but at last, she never listened.
The only thing that could interest her was gowns and gems and of course the many suitors who came begging for her hand in marriage. Pathetic. She never believed that a love like that could be real. Affection starved from greed and looks was not something she wanted, nor should anyone. Maybe that's why this life of luxury disgusted her. Yes living in a giant palace with the fluffiest pillows and the freshest fruit sounded lovely, beats her small bedroom that she shares with her sisters, but was it worth it? Okay maybe she would become a royal for the library, maybe.
Her thoughts came back to her as Princess slammed the book shut. If she bends that book I swear. âI am done for today.â She huffed.
âWe started ten minutes ago.â Blossom sighed and smoothed the headache that was starting to form. âLet's do history, today is about the different types of clothes and fabrics. Maybe youâll enjoy this.â
âWhy would I?â
âBecause if you see something you like, you can have it custom made, plus i'll tell you where the most expensive silk is.â Got her.
Princess stared at her. Even though she was older than her by a year, she seemed to resemble more of her students she taught at the schoolhouse. Aka she was a brat.
âFine but make it quick, the newest batch of suitors is coming today and I want to see my options.â
Blossom rolled her eyes. Princess was turning 20. She should have been married off at 18 but after complaining about wanting to have a little more freedom, dear old king daddy gave in. She always got what she wanted, those poor men.
âOkay well. Let's make a deal. Iâll leave you these two book, donât make that face they are mostly pictures, and Iâll leave you for today. However when I come back tomorrow, you better be able to tell me five different fabrics and where they are from and we wonât have class for the rest of the week that way you can focus on the ball that's been held on Friday?â
The smile that grew on Princess' face was wicked. âDeal!â She stood and took the books. âIâm just happy I wonât have to see that hideous outfit for the rest of the week.â She pointed at Blossom's gown.
It was a light brown skirt with  leather belt and a white blouse, Blossom thought it was rather lovely considering her little sister Bubbles had made it.
âAlright then.â She rolled her eyes, gosh she hated her. âIâll see you tomorrow.â
Princess was already out of the door before she could blink, but she didnât care. She turned and placed the rest of the scrolls and books on the proper shelves of the private library. The king, who had never spared a single expense in his life, made sure that practically every title written was stuffed inside the room. And he gave Blossom personal access to any of the books since she was one of the few who could read and bothered to do so as well.
She skimmed the shelf, her fingers tracing over the many velvet blinds. So many stories to be read. She grabbed three different ones before slipping them into her satchel. She blew out the candles and pushed in the chairs before leaving the grand room.
The king had offered her a key to her own private quarters but she would rather stay with her father and sisters than let Princess yell at her at any hour she decided. Yes, much rather.
-- Princess could hardly contain herself as she stood next to her father in the courtyard. Before them,a dozen or so carriages were pulling up, each one containing a handsome suitor. Some are princes, others are men from rich families. Either way, they were all lining up to see the Princess and hopefully marry her.
âI don't know why we are here.â Boomer complained.
âWhy the fuck do you care?â Butch asked. âYouâre the youngest, you are off the hook.â He laughed.
Boomer laughed. The carriage stopped as it was in line to enter the gate. Boomer grabbed the handle and opened it up, ignoring the protests from his brothers. âSorry boys but Iâm going to ditch the collar and go see the local girls.â He winked and strolled off.
Butch propped his feet up on the empty space. âSo big bro.â he slapped the back of his brother. âYou think youâre gonna be the hot piece of ass to win the princesses heart?â He laughed. Brick rolled his eyes as the carriage rolled forward.
âShe is rich.â he mumbled. âI mean I'm probably the best candidate.â Arrogant.
The carriage stopped once more and Brick looked to his brother who was impatiently tapping his leg. âYou can go too. It's probably best that you donât embarrass us and the entire kingdom.â
âThanks bro.â Butch wiped a fake tear from his eyes. âMy lady said she was docking at these ports so im gonna go try and get some by sundown-â
âGoodbye Butch.â And he was shoved out of the carriage.
Brick could finally take in the piece and quiet. They had only been traveling for three days and it was a miracle he hadnât killed his brothers yet. Sometimes he hated this lifestyle. He was no prince but he and his brothers were adopted by an extremely rich guy who wanted to make a name for himself and create three prodigies. In the end he created a walking disaster who breaks everything and wolf whistles at anything with long legs and the other one is like a puppy constantly running around and yapping constantly. For Brick he is just an arrogant asshole who actually does what she's told, if there's something in it for him.
Which is why he was on his way to try and get married. He didnât want to be because frankly, no woman ever met his standards. They could be beautiful and nice and chatty but there was something missing a certain depth. But with a princess at stake, he was hoping for a lady who was well off and smart.
--- He was wrong. She was nothing like he thought. Sure she was pretty but she was mean to her staff, which he understood cause he could be a pain in the ass. But her voice, that high pitched squeaking, he was sick of her already. The moment he stepped out of the claustrophobic nightmare of a ride, she was in his face already fanning over him.
Those bright yellow dresses clashed with her hair and the light beaming off of her crown almost took out his eyes. She had said about forty different things to him but he was done. He wanted to grab his brothers, turn around and escape this hell hole.
After a short conversation and her rushing to the next dopey guy, he was shown to his quarters, of course Princess, who names their child Princess? Was their tour guide.
âAnd this is the library. It's plain and boring but if you ever need a quiet space or to watch me brush up on my French, you are more than welcome to go there.â Her arm was looped between two men and Brick was happy he was at the back of the pack, what was there, twelve, ten boys? He was really doubting his chances but at this point, he didnât care.
They began to pass those doors and as the last one there, they opened. The group ahead had turned the corner but he was taken down by that massive door. He fell with a thud and was about to scold the living daylights out of whoever dared to do that.
âWhat the hell is your-â he looked up. Pink. Vibrant pink like the sunsets and soft like a rose. He gulped as he lost his voice completely.
âOh I am so sorry!â the woman said as she helped him up. âUsually no one was in these halls but perhaps I should be more careful.â She began to ramble.
All that hostile rage had dissipated as he watched her lips move. She was much different from Princess. Her hair was ginger like hers but it was softer and had more copper tones. She was taller than her too and matched his height better. Her voice, it was like butter and she spoke in such a way that he couldn't describe.
He looked down to see books laying there and picked them up, handing them to her. Why would she have books? Especially these titles, even from the looks of them they were difficult to read, even for him.
âDo you read?â he asked. Of course she didnât.
âOh yes. I am actually Princessâs teacher.â She said but didnât seem thrilled.
He was in awe. She was already something more than that damn spoiled brat. She didnât wear anything special like the maids did. In fact they were more like commoner's clothes than anything.
âYou donât look like you belong here.â He blurted out and she scoffed.
âI beg your pardon.â She crossed her arms. She was used to Princess insulting her any chance she got but it would be a cold day in hell before she would allow someone else to do so. âDo you not think I could possibly be the royal teacher?â He felt her words like a threat.
âNo itâs just, this is a high piece of literature.â
âItâs a simple book really.â
Oh. So she could read. Read well.
âWell yes but-â
âBut nothing.â her words were like ice as she grabbed the books from his hands. Blossom looked at his badge. âI am so sorry I didnât realize that you were a man of importance.â She sounded bitter. âI shouldnât keep you. I wouldn't want the princess knowing that a peasant interrupted time with her boy toy.â
She turned and stomped off. Even as the pout sprouted onto her face she looked, dare he say stunning? The sophistication and elegance rivaled that of Princess and even though she had just destroyed his ego for a good few moments, he never felt more alive and thrilled. A woman standing up to his level when everyone was beneath him? Never heard of before but this new piece that has entered his game, he was loving every second of it.
He turned on his heel and found his way back to the group. He wasnât here for the crown anymore.
-- Sometimes she wondered what would happen if she just left. Run away from this village and go see the world. Of course that's what her sister did. Kinda. She was a captain of one of the kingdom's ships, basically her job was to travel and trade with other places, she liked to call herself a pirate. Blossom gave up trying to change her mind.
She could join her sister but she hated ships anyways. Plus Buttercup had gotten hitched last year to some random guy she met at a port stop, Blossom had met him once before and thought she was crazy for marrying someone. But after a delightful five minute conversation, she decided that he was best for her. If anyone could handle her rebellious lifestyle and the seven seas, then he must be good.
She was thankful that today would be her last day with Princess, well until the next week, but she could catch up on reading and maybe take her students to the docks or the forest for a lesson. Her mind was wandering to far off places and before she knew it, she was entering the library.
She furrowed her brow as she noticed the chairs arranged facing her table. She dismissed whatever thought that was and began to set up Princessâs test as promised. She had pictures, drawn by Bubbles of course, and she placed them on the table.
âThis should be easy.â And soon the doors opened. Blossoms eyes widened as the Princess walked in with that snobbish strut as a group of men followed behind. âOh no.â Blossom whispered to herself. She agreed to test Princess, not the entire population of suitors.
âAnd this woman right here is my teacher. She's a poor peasant girl so ignore her scrap of clothing.â The room erupted in laughter as Princessâs annoying voice trailed through her ears. Princess was already testing her patience, who makes fun of someone with less money? An awful person that's who.
Blossom bit her tongue as Princess took her seat. The rows of men were now staring at them, whispering. She let her eyes rake over the small crowd when her eyes landed on a familiar pair. The man she hit with the door. She completely forgot that he was here for marriage purposes. Blossom shook her head and slammed a book shut, capturing everyone's attention.
If Princess wanted to be a bigger brat than usual, fine, she could play that game.
âAlright your majesty, are you ready for your test.â Blossom turned towards the group of men. âYou see I believe it is important that a leader understands even the simplest things about other countries, especially the ones that could be potential partners. So this fine lad is incredibly bright so her test is simple. I laid our pictures of fabrics from many different places, some even from your own kingdoms. I have no doubt that she can match all twenty five.â She turned on her heel towards the princess who looked angry, good.
âYou said five!â Her tone laced with fire.
Blossom was one good actress. She paused and took a step back, masking her voice. âYes five for a warm up but you my soon queen, you must be able to name all of them right? I did teach you them after all.â She smirked. âBut if you can't, that's okay, why donât we do your five and the rest of these fine gentlemen can finish, after all, a leader should know these things.â If they wanted to be rude, then a challenge they must complete.
âPrincess go ahead and match five and then will have the rest join.â She looked at the men. Scared looks were on their faces except for one, door man. He seemed relaxed and had a poker face on.
Princess huffed and walked up to the table. She recognized a few of the easy ones and placed them. Blossom watched as her hands shook and she looked up at her as she placed one down. Blossom saw she was moving to the wrong one and decided to play nice.
âEmerald kingdom is the same as the jewel.â She whispered and the princess moved the name towards the green one. She took a step back and smiled proudly.
âSee easy peasy.â And she returned to her seat.
Blossom clasped her hands together. âAlright then, if any of you would like to try go for it, but if not, then you may be excused.â
None of the men stood and Blossom's polite smile fell. âVery well-â She watched as the door man, she should learn his name, stood and walked over.
âQuite a shame you could only name five your highness.â He said towards the princess who was now staring at him with a gaping mouth. Blossom raised her brows as she could not believe he would disrespect her like that. He quickly took the names and placed them in record time before their matching pictures.
He turned to see Blossom watching him. Her eyes held this twinkled that he couldnât quite place and he made sure to switch two of the names last minute.
âCare to check my work MissâŠâ
âBlossom.â She finished and walked over to him. She stood next to him and looked over the table. She could feel his stare but unlike the others, she didnât feel small or meak. She smiled softly as she picked up two of them.
âVery impressive but Camilla has velvet and Widows Valley has ivory silk.â Her eyes met his. She almost let out a gasp as she stared at a breathtaking deep red. She had never seen such enchanting eyes before.
âSilk like a spider. Forgive me for my mistake.â He took her hand and placed a delicate kiss to the top of her hand. She felt the flames rush to her cheeks and heard a gasp come from Princes mouth.
Her eyes shot open and she took her hand away fast and returned to her teacherly poise. âYes well that is alright but very good. Princess you should learn something and apply yourself more, I'm not going to tell you again but a promise is a promise so i will be seeing you next week for your next lesson.â She quickly walked to the other table and grabbed her bag and shoved everything in it.
She knew the princess was going to throw a fit. How could he treat her like that? In front of Princess nonetheless. She was thankful to hear the sound of feet exiting. Someone had come up behind her and whispered in her ear.
âYouâll be lucky if you make next week you meddling whore.â Princess sneered and Blossom turned around to yell at her but the group of men were waiting by the door just watching to see the peasant girl slip up.
âI have no interest in your games Princess, maybe if you tried harder, you wouldnât have to rely on your crown or body.â She could play dirty and the princess turned with a scoff.
âNo man would ever love a woman like you, even if you can read, you are no prize.â She stomped off and let Blossom with a clenched jaw and matching fists.
The door slammed shut and now she was alone. âStupid bitch.â She sneered. She rarely used foul language but in times like theses, she allowed it.
âShe sure is.â Blossom dropped her book and her head snapped left.
Brick was still standing here as if he never moved but she swore she saw him leave. âI-I would never-â He held his hand up.
âI see the way she treats you Miss Blossom, it's okay to curse out the villain. And my apologies for causing such a scene.â He said bluntly.
âSomehow I donât believe you.â She narrowed her eyes. âYou seem like you know what youâre doing, no matter the consequences.â
He bit back a laugh and moved closer to her. âOh I am. I have no interest with that spoiled girl. Not one maiden has ever impressed me enough to care.â
âHow insightful.â
âThat is until you.â he smirked and she felt her cheeks flush for the hundred times. He was showing his arrogant side. The one many girls fawned over because they mistook it for a form of lust but it rubbed Blossom the wrong way.
âMe correcting your simple mistake is not very impressive.â
âWho said I made the mistake? I know very well that Widows Peak is silk, that is my home base after all.â he stepped closer until he leaned on the desk with his arm. He peered down at her, almost like a challenge but she stood strong.
âWell unfortunately, Iâve never met a man who could qualify my own standards.â
âNever?â he leaned closer but she refused to give up. Their noses would touch if he came closer.
âNever.â She stated and they were now in a showdown. Red to pink. Pink to red. Never had the other met a more worthy opponent.
âWell Miss Blossom, I think that I should prove you wrong with a date.â
âNo thank you.â He blinked. Wait what?
âExcuse me? Do you know-â
âNo I donât and I simply do not care.â She snapped.
Blossom went back to her bag. âLike I told Princess, I have no interest in any of these men. Especially not ones who would stand by and let another belittle another. No thank you, i am quite happy on my own but there are a bunch of other fine maidens who would probably love your company.â She passed him and he grabbed her arm and spun her around, dipping her. The bright red ribbon holding her hair into a fine bun had unraveled and now fell to a long ponytail.Â
A small scream let her lips as she was now being held by her waist over the ground. âWhat are you.â Her eyes darkened.
âBrick. Call me Brick, none of that sir or lord crap either.â He brought her closer smoothly. His smile was large and his eyes narrowed as her cheeks puffed out and she looked a little angry. âYou did hit me with a door and I donât think the royal pain in the ass would appreciate it if she knew. So Miss Blossom, would you accompany me to the ball on Friday?â
No. no. no. no. Princess would kill her. Absolutely murder her with a strand of pearls. She could lose her job, her livelihood. The rumors she could spread. She would destroy her reputation for sure. Her mind was screaming telling her to push him away and tell him to go bother another lady.
âFine but I demand to be wooed.â she spat and he smiled and returned her to the upright position. She felt flustered and in shock but also introduced. No one had ever dipped her or held her so gently.
âOh you shall be wooed Mâlady.â He winked and turned away to walk out the door.
She let out the breath she was holding when he was finally gone and pulled out her fan. âHe is the...worst.â But she didnât fully believe it. ---- Wednesday found herself in the school yard with her students. She was ecstatic to now have a bunch of little girls added to this year's class. After convincing many mothers that their daughters' futures could be brighter with some knowledge, they happily agreed. She was thankful that her own father taught her the basics and she tried to teach Bubbles and Buttercup how to read and write but you could only keep them interested before a pretty dress or a sailboat distracted them.
âBye bye Miss Blossom!â Her students waved as they left the yard to return home. She loved and adored her students. Their bright minds and curious thoughts, she could never get sick of them and they were much better students than Princess ever was.
âMiss Blossom there is a fancy man in the classroom.â Robin's small hand clung to her dress.
âFancy man?â She whispered to herself before sending Robin off towards her mother. She entered the room to find Brick leaning against her desk.
âMay i help you?â She asked with her arms crossed. âI do believe Friday is the meeting time.â
He shrugged and handed her an arrangement of flowers. Her mouth fell open as she gazed at them. They were wrapped with a ribbon of fine quality, and was probably worth more than her own outfit.
âI am well aware of that but I never said i wouldnât see you before.â he glanced at the flowers then back at her. âHave you never received flowers before.â he asked like it was a dumb question.
âOh no.â She took them carefully and placed them in the vase that held a few flowers her students had picked, and they were dying.
âI'm genuinely surprised that men arenât knocking on the door for your hand.â
He saw her eyes dull. âNot too many men are keen on a lady being smarter and taller than them.â She shrugged and for some reason that made him mad. She was a beautiful woman no doubt, her beauty could be that of a princess but she didnât have that royal aura about her. No she was better but didnât know it.
âA man threatened by a lady is no man at all. If he can not see that then he deserves nothing.â
She took in his words. Maybe this was his way of apologizing without out damaging his pride, she would probably do the same thing but she wouldnât let him off so easily.
She hummed. âSo Brick just the flowers or are you going to actually impress me?â She matched his cocky attitude and it has been a long time, or the first since he had ever felt frazzled by a woman. He was used to catching him off guard but even by her everything nice charm and sophisticated posture, he was certain that she would be the death of him.
Even though he had just met her, he was certain they were made for each other. Butch would kill him if he every said that out loud though. He smiled before taking her hand. âThen prepared to be impressed.â
--
I hope you enjoy and part 2 shall be up tomorrowÂ

2020 READING RECAP!
This year sucked ass in so many ways, but it might be the best year of reading Iâve ever had. I discovered so many new favorites, revisited some old favorites, and even read a few books multiple times. In this post, Iâve listed my top five favorite books from this year in the order that I read them because I donât think I could possibly rank them against each other. They have all become some of my favorite books of all time. Iâve also included a few honorable mentions which are ranked with my favorite listed first. And lastly, I have two notable rereads of some old favorites. I also added links to each book on goodreads and bookshop so you can easily add anything to your tbr or buy it! This is going to be a long one, so buckle up. Without further ado, here is an overview of the books I read in 2020!

Beartown and Us Against You by Fredrik Backman
(Yes, I know Iâm kind of cheating by counting this as one book but just roll with me here) Beartown takes place in a tiny community in rural Sweden which is defined by their hockey club. When the junior hockey team has a chance at winning the national championships, the entire town throws their full support behind them. The burden of the pride of their community rests on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys. For one, the pressure boils over and he commits an act of violence that leaves a young girl traumatized, and the entire community divided.Â
Late one evening toward the end of March, a teenager picked up a double-barreled shotgun, walked into the forest, put the gun to someone else's forehead, and pulled the trigger.
This is the story of how we got there.
These two books were downright spectacular. Over the course of this year, Iâve completely fallen in love with Backmanâs writing style (we love a good onomatopoeia) but more than anything else I just adore his characters. Each one is multidimensional, and even the most infuriating residents of Beartown have their redeeming qualities. I also love the attention he gives to even the side characters whose motivations shape the story even if they only appear for a few scenes. These are stories about right and wrong, courage and fear, and most of all, humanity itself. I laughed and cried and felt more emotions than I thought was possible. Beartown was amazing, but I actually thought that the sequel, Us Against You, somehow surpassed it, so make sure to read both!! (TW: rape/sexual assault)

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
Paul Kalanithi was thirty-six years old and on the verge of completing a decadeâs worth of training to become a neurosurgeon when he was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. His memoir, When Breath Becomes Air, follows his journey from being a naĂŻve medical student, to a brilliant neurosurgeon at Stanford, to being a cancer patient and a new father confronting his own mortality. Â
I began to realize that coming in such close contact with my own mortality had changed both nothing and everything. Before my cancer was diagnosed, I knew that someday I would die, but I didnât know when. After the diagnosis, I knew that someday I would die, but I didnât know when. But now I knew it acutely. The problem wasnât really a scientific one. The fact of death is unsettling. Yet there is no other way to live.
This memoir caught me completely by surprise. It was assigned reading for an English class and I wasnât expecting to enjoy it let alone completely reevaluate my perception of the world around me because of it. Kalanithi discusses learning, medicine, life, and death as he seeks to answer the age-old question, âWhat makes life worth living?â and the unique perspectives that he offered fascinated me. When Breath Becomes Air is an unfinished manuscript, since Kalanithi died in 2015, but the epilogue written by his wife might just be the best part of the whole book. To tell you that I was sobbing while reading it would be an understatement. The reason why this book made this list is because I finished it in March, but I still think about it relatively often. When Breath Becomes Air has left a lasting impact on my life, and I highly recommend it!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Evelyn Hugo was a Hollywood legend, but after her sudden departure from show business in the late 80s, she completely fell out of the public gaze. Now she is finally ready to tell the true story about her scandalous and glamorous life and she has specifically chosen Monique Grant, a virtually unknown magazine reporter, for the job. For Monique this exclusive is the opportunity of a lifetime. Evelyn tells her story of ambition, friendship, love, and of course each of her seven husbands. However, it becomes evident that Evelynâs life has intersected with Moniqueâs own in tragic and irreversible ways.
Itâs always been fascinating to me how things can be simultaneously true and false, how people can be good and bad all in one, how someone can love you in a way that is beautifully selfless while serving themselves ruthlessly.
This. Book. It was absolutely captivating. Iâm honestly not even sure what to say here without giving too much away. The plot is truly a wild ride as Evelyn leads Monique through the story of her life. There are so many twists and turns: some that I saw coming and others that completely blindsided me. And that not even to mention Evelyn Hugo herself who is one of the strongest, smartest, most compassionate and deeply flawed characters Iâve ever read about. All the characters were complex and layered, but she was really something else. There were so so many emotions and so many tears and I really donât know what else to say. Iâm begging you to read this book; it will blow your mind.

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Ove is a curmudgeon whose life is turned upside down when a young, vivacious family moves in next door. Thatâs it. Thatâs the synopsis.
Death is a strange thing. People live their whole lives as if it does not exist, and yet it's often one of the great motivations for living. Some of us, in time, become so conscious of it that we live harder, more obstinately, with more fury. Some need its constant presence to even be aware of its antithesis. Others become so preoccupied with it that they go into the waiting room long before it has announced its arrival. We fear it, yet most of us fear more than anything that it may take someone other than ourselves. For the greatest fear of death is always that it will pass us by. And leave us there alone.
Youâve seen the Pixar movie: grumpy old man meets young person who shows him life is worth living and they become buds etc. etc. Sure, you could essentially boil down A Man Called Ove to that simple plotline but it is so much more than that. Itâs heartbreaking and hopeful and youâll laugh and cry while reading it. This was the most wholesome story I had read in a long time, and I thoroughly enjoyed every last bit of it. Iâve already explained my love of Backmanâs unique writing style, but this novel in particular does a beautiful job of tackling deep themes such as grief and purpose with a generous serving of humor. I also just adored the ending. While this book isnât at all fluffy or entirely lighthearted, it gave me all of he warm fuzzy feelings I was craving. I cannot possibly recommend it enough!

Pride and Prejudice by Jane AustenÂ
Elizabeth Bennet and her four sisters must find wealthy husbands because upon their fatherâs death, the entirety of his estate will be passed on to a male cousin, leaving them penniless. Conveniently, a wealthy gentleman called Mr. Bingley moves into the neighborhood, bringing along his even wealthier although most unpleasant friend, Mr. Darcy.Â
Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us.
I definitely didnât think that I was going to enjoy this book nearly as much as I did. The story truly is timeless, and I absolutely adored Elizabeth and Darcy. The biggest surprise I had while reading is that the humor is still funny today and of course Lizzy is fucking hilarious. She is confident, principled, and more than happy to roast the shit out of anyone who deserves it. And then thereâs the matter of Mr. Darcy being so sweet and kind (after he stops being an asshole of course) and greatly contributing to the unattainable standards I have for men. It was also nice to have a socially awkward male lead, and in many ways I related more to him than to Lizzy. This book is everything I want from a romance novel plus class criticism and feminism and Elizabeth being an absolute badass. Enemies to lovers is my all time favorite romance trope and I loved reading one of the OGs. Also, Iâd just like to add that Mary is the most underappreciated character of the whole novel because sheâs really just trying her best. Mostly I was just completely impressed with how this novel has withstood the test of time and it has become one of my favorite classics! Please please give this book a chance even if you donât typically enjoy classic novels!!

The Martian by Andy Weir
Mark Watney is one of the first people to ever walk on Mars, and now it seems like heâll be the fist person to die there. A raging dust storm forced his crew to evacuate without him and he finds himself alone on the red planet with the entire world believing him to be dead. This book just barely missed being one of my top five of the year, but it was absolutely amazing. I love reading about people finding clever solutions to problems and that is basically what this entire story is. I maybe understood half of the technical science jargon if Iâm being generous, but the story is plenty enjoyable even without extensive scientific knowledge. I adore Markâs wit and mindset, and I loved watching him wriggle his way out of impossible situations with the odds completely stacked against him. The Martian is a story of perseverance and humanity, but itâs also absolutely hilarious. I highly recommend this one if you havenât picked it up!!

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
Shaker-Heights appears to be the perfect place to raise a family. Itâs progressive, has low crime rates and is all around an idyllic bubble. This all begins to change when a single mother and her daughter move into town with a disregard for the status quo, and a custody battle erupts, dividing the community. This was a great book that ended up being surprisingly thought provoking, and I particularly enjoyed the novelâs criticism of liberal idealism. The story itself was entertaining and I think itâs definitely worth a read!Â

Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
Alex Claremont-Diaz is the first son of the United States who finds himself intertwined in a damage control PR stunt with his sworn nemesis, Prince Henry. They have to pretend to be best friends to ensure that their confrontation at the royal wedding doesnât get in the way of American/British relations. Iâm sure you can guess where this is going. This is totally a feel-good love story, but it also finds the time to tackle real issues surrounding politics and societal expectations. I loved this book so much that I read it twice this year (the second time because I was so stressed about the election and I needed to distract myself with the fictional 2020 election that takes place in the novel) and also Iâm just a sucker for enemies to lovers. (sidenote: the turkey catastrophe is one of the greatest scenes in literary history and you cannot convince me otherwise) 100% would recommend!

The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
The Jim Dale audiobooks are my ultimate self-care tool when Iâm stressed or sad; I just find them to be so comforting and I canât explain why. Because of this I probably listen to at least one of the books every year, but itâs usually just whichever one I happen to be in the mood for. But itâs been so long since Iâve listened through the entire series, and this year seemed to be the perfect time to do so!Â
.
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
This used to be my favorite book of all time. Iâm pretty sure I first read it in sixth or seventh grade and Iâve reread it so many times since. Iâve been planning on rereading this book my first year of university for such a long time, and the time finally came! The book especially hit hard this semester because Cath feels disconnected from everyone at school because she doesnât want to go to parties or make much of an effort to find friends, and because of COVID, I ended up in almost the exact same situation, (except unfortunately my roommate doesnât have a cute ex-boyfriend who hangs out in our room). This was definitely another comfort read like the HP audiobooks and it made me feel a bit better about being stuck in my dorm room.Â
.
If you actually made it to the end of all that, wow, youâre a real one. I hope you got a few new book recs out of this! If you want to see the thirteen other books I read this year, you can check out my 2020 reading challenge. I read so many amazing books this year I had hard time narrowing down my favorites, so there are still plenty more great reads that arenât included in this post. If for some reason you feel like keeping up with the books I read in 2021, follow my goodreads account for dramatic and ranty book reviews. Happy New Year, and hereâs to 2021 being full of wonderful books!

Short chapter so short summary today! Thanks for reading!

CHAPTER 12- Regarding the Metaphorical Replacement for Proximity
1.
âAll in all, itâs really whimsical,â said the heir to the Ketouin Conglomerate, Hiroyuki Ketouin, âItâs amazing really, a great record. The world record holder of holding your breath, 22 minutes and 30 seconds, is Goran Colak. [1] I canât compare to this kind of guy. First of all, Iâd need to be in the car under the water..."
I didnât listen to Hiroyukiâs jokes. I leaned on the back seat of the car and stared out the window, putting the flowing scenery into my vision: the unchanging landscape, only the forest on the horizon. But the railroad tracks have disappeared. Although I really want to know where I am, Iâm too tired to use Borges.
"Miss, you look listless."
"Because Byakuya-sama is gone..."
"Cheers for Goran Korak!" Hiroyuki took a Pilsner beer out of the dashboard's storage box. "So has the young master contacted you?"
"No."
"He should have managed to escape."
"If thatâs the case, why didnât he contact me?"
"Maybe he was worried about leaking his location to an outsider like me."
"You are not serious, are you?"
"You don't have to think about what my real identity is."
"The Imposter said something similar. Itâs ridiculous, only the right one is the most important."
Since I arrived in the Czech Republic, I have encountered many copies and imposters, over and over. Those people shouted that they were the real deal, but the glittering coats they wore were stripped by others, or they were uncovered, one by one exposing their identity as counterfeit, or they just simply died. Or disappeared. Or killed. I am me, I am a Togami, I have a clear and accurate understanding of this, but on the contrary, everything else seems suspicious. What if this place is actually not the Czech Republic, but a virtual space. I am actually sleeping in bed with VR glasses. Even if it was such a disappointing ending, I would probably not be surprised. Having said that, I don't want to write any lies in the biography of Byakuya-sama... "Journey Under The Midnight Sun", so even if this reality I see is all false, I can't erase this adventure. I want to write down the original reality, and neither hope nor despair can interfere. This description is like warehousing management. Some people may feel uninterested. However, this is the essence of biography. If you add fuel to your story, it is no different from fiction. It is already in a state of completion, and there is no need to add, delete or modify anything.
Hiroyuki takes a sip of beer before saying that Shinobu looks as if she is out of the mud, but just because she is the SHSL Secretary doesnât mean she is perfect.
"I don't think anyone else can accurately distinguish between true and false like me, though."
"What was your first favorite book?"
"What do you mean?"
"Don't worry so much, just answer. What was your first favorite book?"
âSmall Pig.â
Shinobu thinks about the Author, Arnold Lobel, and how the version she had was a translated version of the original english story into japanese. It was something of a bedtime story for her.
Hiroyuki and Shinobu then start to discuss how translations in novels can end up being quite different to what the original work was intending, and that texts should always be read in the language they were produced in for the full effect. [2]
âOf course, there will be some subtle differences in meaning, but the degree of meaning would be very slight, right?â
"Well take for example a voice actor gets changed, someone will quarrel and say: 'Itâs totally wrong! This is a fake!' If that happens, then you must read the original book when reading, donât run from it, donât be afraid either, you must be brave when facing the original text."
Shinobu wonders about how meaning behind text can be viewed differently by different observers, and how that would affect the outcome of how a work is observed. In this case, a translation of a text could change the meaning of a work to something completely different, and possibly much less profound in nature, without the intricacies of the original text. [2]
Borges then brings up a few quotes (#23232300), from people who are regretting getting into the translation business.
Hiroyuki brings up the story of a man who didnât want to translate a prolific buddhist work into japanese, because the meaning wouldnât be the same. Because you donât know what the original story is, you would have no idea what changes would have been made by the translator to suit the language. Or alternately what parts of the story have been altered or fabricated.
He talks about how people who write in Sanskrit or Czech would never know the true story of âThe Tale Of Genjiâ [3] because in truth, the versions translated into those languages was merely an abridged version of the story. A summary, if you will. This âlight novelâ version is inferior to the original product by its very nature in not being the original work itself.
Comparing modern language translation with light novel adaptation, I canât help but admire this arrogant opinion. Indeed, this isnât just as simple as moving a tray of food from plate to plate, but because of the different personalities and intentions of the writers and translators... or making bold explanations or making large-scale changes... There will be considerable changes in the content, which is quite different from what I have pursued in my biography. The biography I want to write is a true transcript. I only transfer the real things to the transcripts on paper. Even the consciousness of myself, the author, should be excluded. This is a perfect copy, which is what I wish to pursue. Due to the existence of the author, modern language translation and light novel adaptation will change the content. The shamelessness of this behavior is comparable to the dumping of organic garbage at a crime scene. In this sense, perhaps no book can serve as a model for âJourney Under The Midnight Sunâ. It seems that what I want to do may really fall into the category of quantum mechanics. That's just what I think, at least-
"By the way⊠Where are we going?"
"There is a nearby town, the name is written on the navigation system. Hey, but how should this be read? Czech is really difficult to understand... Karlovy...Vary?"
"Ah, I know this place. It is a famous hot spring resort."
"A Spa," Hiroyuki turned his head despite being driving "You said hot spring, right!? The next volume of this book must be the pink bookmark route!! I can't help but get excited!"
"Oh no, itâs a drinking cure spring."
"Oh?"
âItâs not a hot spring, but a drinking cure spring to make your body healthier. The Czech Republic has this custom.â
"...I haven't been so disappointed for a long time.â
Hiroyuki exclaims that he hasnât been so disappointed since learning secrets about various other topics, and hopes that Europeans will one day be able to understand the beauty of japanese style hot springs. Shinobu thinks about how every countries hot springs are different because their values are different. People who say things like "Only the Japanese can understand this kind of beauty" when visiting buddhist temples are self-righteous. She thinks about how big the world is and how even with common and uncommon sense, the world will never change. She is unlucky to have met so many fakes, imposters and counterfeits in the Czech Republic, and even though Hiroyuki is alive, Byakuya is still missing.
"It really is a whimsical world."
Hiroyuki commented this way, but it seems to me that "unreal world" is more accurate. Impossible things, unimaginable things, incredible things are appearing before me, but no matter how much I complain, the problems at hand will not be resolved by myself. Escape from this ridiculous world, or be swallowed up by this ridiculous world. To all of this insanity, I can only say one thing.
"Iâm hungry."
2.
Shinobu and Hiroyuki drop off by a KFC. Even though itâs not Christmas time just yet, they still decided to eat there anyway. [4] They stuffed themselves, and Shinobu continued to eat in the car, and Hiroyuki cracks a joke that falls flat on its head and is so not funny I'm not translating it.
The Mercedes is now driving to largest resort in the Czech Republic. The Karlovy Vary Spa began in the 14th century, when Carl IV discovered the source of the hot springs here; however, the style of the spa area seems to be internationally shared, and it is reminiscent of the streetscape of the Noboribetsu Onsen and Ikaho Onsen. [5] [6]
"It seems that itâs still open," Hiroyuki looked out through the window. "That said, I can't take you sightseeing."
"How can they still be open in this situation?"
"Well KFC is still open."
âBy the way, the spa in the Czech Republic is one person at a time according to the instructions. So please donât have any strange expectations.â
âOh yeah, why are you so familiar with this place anyway?"
"I... I did some investigation beforehand because I wanted to come to the hot springs with Byakuya-sama!"
"........."
"I have been looking forward to this trip."
Moving on from the subject, Hiroyuki thinks that Byakuya might have used the Kudan, though Shinobu points that no matter what happens Byakuya wouldnât do it. Even when faced with absolute despair. Granted, she doesnât know why he would seal it away either. To that, Hiroyuki believes that perhaps the re-assurance of it being sealed was better than than using the Kudan.
When they arrive at the hotel next to the drinking spring, Shinobu does a quick search with Borges. Apparently itâs a very luxurious hotel which accommodated many important historical figures such as Goethe and Beethoven. [7][8] But something seemed off. Even though the Czech government declared a state of emergency, many people who looked like tourists were in the hotel lobby. Hiroyuki comes back to Shinobu and says that he has booked a room on the top floor of the hotel.
She covers her face to avoid any assassinâs on the lookout, and they then head to the room. As soon as they open the door, Shinobu lays on the bed and falls asleep saying that she hasnât slept properly since they came to Prague.
"It's good to get a good night's rest, helps you wake up more clear minded," Hiroyuki's voice entered my mind. "The most important thing about an article is not its writing, but the study beforehand."
3.
She wakes up all sweaty and with messy hair, so she decides to take a bath. While she is doing that, she thinks about where could Byakuya be and she remembers what he said.
âWait for me.â
She still doesnât understand what he meant, but she decides to have faith in Byakuya and just wait as he said. She didnât want to put back on her old sweaty clothes, but she didnât want to wear the bathrobe either. When she comes out of the bathroom, she finds Hiroyuki eating a Czech meal.
"Oh, Hello, Miss Beautiful."
Hiroyuki still made me feel more uncomfortable.
He asks her to sit down and eat, and even though she is not hungry (thanks to eating KFC) she still agrees. They start with some small talk, about different cultural cuisines, such as Roman, Slovakian and Czech, but they decide to get on with it.
It seems that if I want to continue the topic, Iâd have to sit down with him. With a sigh, I sat down opposite of Mr. Hiroyuki Ketouin. There are many foods on the table that look like Czech food, although I don't know if it is. Roasted chicken with fat, and sour pickles next to it, mushroom soup, stir-fried pork with horseradish and spicy sauce, wrapped in a thin layer of fried squid, with aroma of charcoal. Lamb chops, oiled cheese, oyster steak, sour cream yak meat, mineral water, and his beer is still Pilsner beer. These meaty dishes are those of this country on lockdown. Surprisingly, looking at them, my stomach is hungry again. This made me realize that I am still alive.
Hiroyuki poured beer into a huge wide-mouth cup and called out: "Cheers!" raising the cup. I poured the mineral water into a classic glass and took a bite of cheese. In the suite where the sunlight shone through the large window at the rear, I enjoyed the food. If the person sitting across from me was Byakuya-sama, this would be a wonderful scene.
Translations notes:
[1] Goran Colak is a Croation freediver who currently holds the world record for holding breath underwater. His record is now at 23:01.
[2] Bruh, I am trying ok.
[3] The Tale Of Genji is a classic work of Japanese literature written by the noblewoman and lady-in-waiting Murasaki Shikibu in the early years of the 11th century. The original manuscript no longer exists. It was made in "concertina" or orihon style: several sheets of paper pasted together and folded alternately in one direction then the other, around the peak of the Heian period. The work is a unique depiction of the lifestyles of high courtiers during the Heian period, written in archaic language and a poetic and confusing style that makes it unreadable to the average Japanese without dedicated study. It was not until the early 20th century that Genji was translated into modern Japanese, by the poet Akiko Yosano. The first English translation was attempted in 1882, but was of poor quality and incomplete.Â
[4] From December 1974, KFC Japan began to promote fried chicken as a Christmas meal, with its long running "Kentucky for Christmas"Â or "Kentucky Christmas" advertising campaign. Eating KFC food as a Christmas meal has since become a widely practised custom in Japan. As of 2019, in Japan, Christmas sales of KFC made around Christmas Eve account for nearly five per cent of annual revenue.
[5] Noboribetsu Onsen is Hokkaido's most famous hot spring resort, offering as many as eleven different kinds of thermal waters, that are considered among Japan's best and most effective. The resort town consists of numerous (mostly large sized) ryokan and hotels with hot spring baths. Several of them open their baths during daytime to non-staying guests for typically 700 to 2000 yen. In addition, there is one public bath house located in the center of town.
[6] Ikaho Onsen is a hot spring town located on the eastern slopes of Mount Haruna. Known for its reddish brown, iron-laden thermal waters, Ikaho Onsen joins Kusatsu, Minakami and Shima Onsen as the four most famous hot spring resorts of Gunma Prefecture. The atmospheric old town area of Ikaho centers around the 300 meter long stone stairs which lead up through the middle of town and are lined by ryokan, old fashioned game arcades and shops. A few kilometers outside of Ikaho stands Mizusawa Kannon, a popular temple, well known for the udon noodles sold at restaurants along its approach. Mount Haruna with its beautiful caldera lake can also be easily combined with a visit to Ikaho.
[7] Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a German writer and statesman. His works include: four novels; epic and lyric poetry; prose and verse dramas; memoirs; an autobiography; literary and aesthetic criticism; and treatises on botany, anatomy, and colour. In addition, numerous literary and scientific fragments, more than 10,000 letters, and nearly 3,000 drawings by him have survived.
[8] Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist. A crucial figure in the transition between the classical and romantic eras in classical music, he is considered to be one of the greatest composers of all time. Beethoven was born in Bonn, the capital of the Electorate of Cologne, and part of the Holy Roman Empire. He displayed his musical talents at an early age and was vigorously taught by his father Johann van Beethoven, and was later taught by composer and conductor Christian Gottlob Neefe. At age 21, he moved to Vienna and studied composition with Joseph Haydn. Beethoven then gained a reputation as a virtuoso pianist, and was soon courted by Karl Alois, Prince Lichnowsky for compositions, which resulted in Opus 1 in 1795. The piece was a great critical and commercial success, and was followed by Symphony No. 1 in 1800. This composition was distinguished for its frequent use of sforzandi, as well as sudden shifts in tonal centers that were uncommon for traditional symphonic form, and the prominent, more independent use of wind instruments. In 1801, he also gained notoriety for his six String Quartets and for the ballet The Creatures of Prometheus. During this period, his hearing began to deteriorate, but he continued to conduct, premiering his third and fifth symphonies in 1804 and 1808, respectively. His condition worsened to almost complete deafness by 1811, and he then gave up performing and appearing in public.

She was calm. A calm young girl who had her whole life ahead of her. Nothing would get in her way.
Her passion for the arts led her down a deep path of internet searching. Searching for more people who had interests like her.
Her love for two boys grew expeditiously after she saw one simple photo on Instagram. The way the photo was taken was enough to make her look through the entire Instagram account, and enough for her to look through each of the boys'.
Her love grew more and more each day, soon leading her to talk so highly of the art she had seen all over twitter.
She hadn't realized these boys were so popular. The amounts of tweets and dm's she had received were unbearable.
She didn't mind them though. People just told her who they were. People were even nice enough to ask to be friends.
Months. Months after the incident had occurred she had gotten one simple dm that changed her life so copiously.
She answered within seconds. She knew who it was, why wouldn't she. It was one of the boys she saw in the photos.
The blue verified mark next to his name proved it wasn't something fake.
The two began talking and it led to so much for each of them. He began asking her about her passion for art and she began asking him anything she really could. Asking about who took the photos, who edited them, how they got to the locations.
Her passion for photography was unreal. She loved it so much. Nobody, not even her mom could completely understand her addiction to the art.Â
Her mom always supported her though. Her love started after her mom bought her a cheap Kodak camera from Walmart when she was 8 years old. As the years went on, she got better equipment, better cameras, and better things to photograph. She went from photographing her pets, to her family, to her friends, and soon to help with the school yearbook.Â
She thought of it more as a hobby rather than a career up until she was about 17. Her senior year is when she decided what sheâd major in.Â
@/graysondolan: hey, idk if this is weird, but can we ft?Â
@/y/t/n: i donât know, gray. maybe another time
@/graysondolan: yeah, yeah. thatâs fine
Itâs not that she didnât want to see him. She just wasnât sure about how heâd feel.Â
You see, thereâs one thing that hadnât been mentioned yet. A severe case of Jaundice as a child led her to grow up slowly losing her hearing.Â
Her mother began teaching her ASL at a young age, she even signed her up with a specialist who would help her get through everything.Â
By age 12, she had fully lost hearing in her right ear. By the time she turned 16, her hearing was fully gone.Â
Days had gone by since the first time Grayson had asked her to ft, he continued to ask her if she was up for it. Each time was a different excuse. Itâs not that she got joy out of upsetting him, she just didnât want to upset him more when he saw her answering him with her hands rather than her mouth.Â
Her speaking wasnât all bad. She could still say a few words, but she couldnât always control how loudly or quietly she would be talking. She wasnât mute, but it was easier for her to talk in ASL than in English.
She knows Grayson is a nice guy. He probably wouldnât care that much, but it worried her to a great extent. Her anxiousness was rising every time Grayson would ask.Â
@/graysondolan: can I at least have your number?Â
@/y/t/n: 878-575-3434
*read @ 3:45 pm*
370-454-3859 : Y/n?
yeah, its me
Grayson: glad I could get your number;)
very funny, trying to slide are ya?
Grayson: nahhhh. no way.
ok ok;)
Grayson: you sure we donât have time to facetime
iâm positive grayson, i really canât right now
Grayson: will you ever be able to
maybe. stop asking and perhaps youâll find out
Grayson: hopefully i will. anyway, what you up to?
trying to help my mom teach my younger brother asl
Grayson: asl?
American sign language
Grayson: oh thats cool, are you fluent?
yeah, since i was about 13.Â
Grayson: oh cool, all I can speak is english. kinda lame
eh, not too bad.Â
Grayson: yeah but you can speak english and asl, thats way cooler
i guessÂ
Her brother was about 9 years old when she first lost her hearing. Heâs now 10, almost 11. He began learning asl to talk with his sister a little before his 10th birthday.Â
He always loved watching his sister edit the photos she had taken that day, but it was quite hard to talk to her considering they had to write everything out.Â
Almost 3 full notebooks had been filled throughout the year. One of them even had writings on the front and back cover.Â
A few days had passed since her last conversation with Grayson. It wasnât like them to not talk for that long. They hardly stopped for even as short as an hour.Â
Grayson: so where do you go to school? or is that weird
its not weird. im homeschooled, have been since 7th grade
Grayson: oh whyâs that?Â
mom had to pull me out. i wasnât up to speed with the other kids
Which was true. She wasnât. Her hearing loss caused her to slowly turn her straight aâs to straight fâs. It was hard for her to put mind to the things her teachers were saying.Â
Her mom already had a teaching degree, and so it wasnât hard for her mom to begin teaching her daughter as soon as possible. Her brother continued to go to public school, his mom didnât want him to miss out on certain things and neither did his sister.Â
She didnât want to be the reason to hold people back, especially her family. Her brotherâs love for hockey wasnât something she could hold back, so she wasnât going to be upset if he wanted to join a public school in order to make sure he would be able to join the younger league of hockey in 5th grade.Â
Heâs started his first year already. His love for hockey had grown instantly after he began playing. His sister always came to his practices and games and got tons of pictures.Â
Some even werenât of her brother. The coach had asked if she would be willing to take pictures after he had seen the ones of her brother.Â
The photos had gone up on the website for the hockey association. It was something she was very proud of, and many of the hockey moms had asked if she had gotten any photos of their sons.Â
Word got around quickly, so more photos were being taken and distributed to the moms of the boys. It hadnât bothered her at all, she loved taking the pictures and she loved to see the parents reactions to the wonderful photos she had taken.Â
Grayson: its been a week since ive asked last, so im asking again. can we facetime yet? i just wanna see your face and talk to you.Â
im at my brothers hockey game. we can when i get home, i promise
After all, if it did end up bothering him, she could easily ignore him. block him, and never speak to him again. It would be a lot harder if they had actually met in real life, but they hadnât. Virtually talking to people can have its advantages when needed.Â
She just needed to know how heâd feel. If she was being honest, sheâd say she didnât care. She didnât care about his reaction anymore, but she wanted to know what it was. She wanted to see and talk to Grayson just as much as he wanted to with her.Â
Grayson: prove it
what do you want a pic?
Grayson: a video
You laughed silently to yourself and took a video of your face and then of your brother playing hockey. You sent the video with a message
That good enough for you?
Grayson: yes very
good. weâre done soon, in case youre wondering
Grayson: thank god. I cant wait to actually talk to you
you are right now
Grayson: you know what i mean. you know. speak
right right, okayyyyy
In all reality, she was horrified. In the back of her mind she was scared. But she was ready, ready to face her fear. Ready for what was to come.
As the time went by it seemed to get slower and slower. Her mind was fumbled with the thought of if she should actually go through with this.
On one hand, she wouldn't have to worry about Grayson finding out her little secret, but on the other hand, she couldn't see herself lying to him this much.
It wasn't a healthy thing to do. To hold back. She was going through a lot. Her brain was tortured and in pain as she thought about how she would introduce herself. Would she say hi, would she sign to him? No. He wouldn't understand that.
Slowly but surely the clock went tick, tick, tick. The time was now. She was about to face her fear of abandonment. As the facetime call rang and she twiddled with her thumbs, wiping her face due to the beads of sweat drippling down her tomato red face, her brother sat beside her and comforter her, making sure she was okay. She nodded and after a few more rings, Grayson picked up. He said hi, she could see it. It wasn't hard to tell that he was excited. Your brother was signing underneath the phone, so only you could see it. Grayson kept talking, your brother trying to sign as quickly as he could. Her brother looked at the camera and then down at the screen at Grayson, who sat in silence, confused at her sudden lack of quirkyness.
"Y/n, you okay?" Grayson says, her brother signing it to her. She looks back up and nods, smiling as if everything was okay. "Are you sure, you keep looking down." Grayson says, looking at you and tilting his head as a way to express his confusion.
"Grayson, uh she-" Her finger gently pressed to her lips to get her brother to be quiet.
She looked up and waved, and breathed in through her noise before slowly breathing out through her mouth. She let her hands take control, and Grayson laughed before saying "You know I only speak english, babe." She sighed and looked at her brother before signing, "Tell him." Her brother nodded before looking at Grayson and then quickly at her to make sure. She nods and starts slowly breathing harder, her face growing redder.
"Grayson. She can't hear you." Her brother says with the most seriousness in his small face.
"What do you mean? Is her phone broken?" Grayson asks, trying to talk more to see if that'll help.
Her brother tells Grayson to be quiet so he can speak, which silences Grayson. "Grayson, she can't hear you because she's deaf."
"What? You're lying." Grayson shook his head in disbelief and then looked at you for confirmation.
You sighed and started signing, your brother speaking for you.
You explained everything to him, and he sat there listening. He didn't judge you at all, and you stayed friends.Â
He even took it upon himself to learn asl so when he was finally able to meet you, you guys could talk. You guys could communicate.Â
#gelrureqgkljtheq thank u#to everyone that helped me finish this#encouraged me to keep writing#and continued to support me even tho i suck at writing

( MICHELLE CHAEâs LIFE IN VIGNETTES â FROM 1999 â PRESENT )
SCENE I. VALLEY GLEN, CA â Q4, 2007. UNDISCLOSED ICE SKATING RINK.
âSheâs a natural on the ice; itâs incredible to me how quickly she picked things up. Has she ever done this before?â The instructor queries as she gazes out at Michelle; watching closely as she finds her balance and gains more confidence the longer that she can stay upright. Never having realized how graceful she is, she aligns her small limbs beautifully to assist in her glidesâmerely understanding how to hold her posture for better balance. âYâknow, you should really consider getting her a proper coach. Itâs not often that a kid just... knows how to control themselves out there.â
Her mother listens, then nods; letting each suggestion sink in before responding. âWell, if she likes it, then weâll have to consider it...â Itâs a simple response that she hopes suffices, and while she would want nothing more than to support her daughter in discovering what she excels at, she canât help but think about the money in the family bank accountâand how itâs nowhere near as high as it should be given the amount of people in their household.
âLook, mom!â The little one yells from the center of the rink, being brave enough to raise one of her legs into an arabesque while she skates; somehow not tumbling over in the process. Itâs in that moment when the instructor cheers, gobsmacked at the progress. âSee what I mean?â Itâs a lot to consider, especially as Heesun knows the cost of putting a child through such a rigorous training regiment. Itâs not only paying out-of-pocket for the materials needed or making sure the coach is paid what their worth, but itâs also long hours practicing and grueling schedules. How on earth any child can sustain that while also attending school is unheard of to her, but all at once, she notices how wide Michelle smiles as she coasts, and it warms her heart.
âDo you have any recommendations? I canât really afford to pay an arm and a leg for it at this time, but if itâs within reason, I think it would be good for her... so long as it doesnât get in the way of her studies.â Nodding, her teacher guides her mother into her office, but that doesnât stop the rising figure skater from continuing. Little does she know, sheâs falling in love.
SCENE II. BOSTON, MA â Q1, 2014. THE TD GARDEN, ARENA.
âYouâre going to do a great job! Weâve been practicing a lot, your routine is great, and even if Iâm hard on you sometimes, Iâm still really proud of you!â Her coach urges, and she nods, but sheâs not really paying attention to anything that sheâs saying. Instead, her eyes turn backwards to the bleachersâdoing her best to see if her father had arrived to join her mother in the audience. Itâs literal milliseconds before sheâs set to take to the ice, but so far, thereâs no sight of him. Back at home, heâs her biggest cheerleader, but whenever it comes to showing up at important events, he constantly fails, and unfortunately, thatâs not his only flaw either. Now that sheâs gotten a little bit older, Michelle understands why her mom and dad donât talk much, even if itâs only recently that they all sit in silence at the dinner table.
Right on time, the announcer calls her name and she rises; gliding over to her mark. Sheâs upset knowing that heâs not in attendance, but she does her best to suppress all of her emotions.
Like coach always says: âNowâs not that the time for that.â
Taking a deep breath, she easily finds her opening pose and holds it strong; powerful. So many thoughts race through her mind in that instant. She thinks about the choreography sheâs spent months learning. She thinks about the plans that her mother made for after theyâre done at the rink. She thinks about her dad and what heâs up to... and right then, almost as if to snap her out of her trance, the music starts pounding through the speakersâmuscle memory kicking into high-gear to guide her through each detailed motion. Itâs a release of her emotions through her body, and itâs in these moments where she feels the most free.
Whatâs unfortunate is that this rush of adrenaline never lasts as long as sheâd like it to, and only after a few minutes, sheâs back to where she began, but now poised in her final position.
Skating back towards her coach, Michelle takes her seat once more; a blanket draped softly over her shoulders for warmth. When her scores are revealed, theyâre the same as always: fair. While sheâs typically relieved to sit pretty in the middle, today, she responds negatively to them; feeling as though all of her hard work didnât add up to a well-deserved win.
She also blames her father for promising that heâd finally make an appearance as her official âgood luck charmâ only to forsake her yet again.
Michelle spends the rest of that evening pensively staring out of windows; text messages arriving from her dadâall apologizing for not being able to make his flight after work.
SCENE III. VALLEY GLEN, CA â Q3, 2016. ULYSSES S. GRANT HIGH SCHOOL.
STUDENT A: âGross... she comes across as so desperate, like...â STUDENT B: âI donât understand what guys see in her, sheâs obnoxious!â STUDENT C: âYeah like, she still acts like sheâs in seventh grade.â STUDENT D: âHey, waitâdidnât she used to figure skate?â STUDENT A: âThatâs right! I heard she had to stop âcause sheâs broke now.â STUDENT D: âDesperate, cheap, slutty... guess thatâs Michelle Chae for ya.â
â
Dad started to sell their personal belongings in order to feed his newly discovered habit. Mom was driven wild. It didnât take long for things to explode, and with the end of their relationship came a screeching halt to Michelleâs figure skating career. With her father no longer being an active part of her life, she and her mother barely made endâs meatâbarely seeing one another due to the lengthy hours they both worked to pay the bills. Sheâs only seventeen and instead of saving money for college, she puts every penny towards supporting her family. She spends so much time being responsible that she deeply sacrifices any personal pleasures and friendships.
Then again, itâs not like people at school are clamoring to get to know her.
From an early age, she knew that she got along better with boys as opposed to girls. In truth, Michelle spent a lot of time around other figure skaters ( most of which were female ) that often treated her poorly, so sheâs learned not to really trust members of the same sex easily. Most of the time, those âfriendshipsâ turned into gross competitions, camaraderie devolved into petty rivalries, and honestly, she absolutely fucking hated it.
In her heart of hearts, she knows that itâs not good to alienate herself from other girls, and itâs something she works on, but at the same time, because of her close friendship with many of her schoolâs male students, some of her peers refer to her as a âwhoreâ and a âslut,â and sadly, this label has stuck with her since middle school. Some say that sheâs too sweet which makes her âeasy.â Others say sheâs fake and has stolen many boyfriendsâwhich isnât accurate at all.
Honestly, Michelle has ever understood the rumors. If boys gave her their attention and made her feel special, why should she be âburned at the stakeâ for engaging with them? For simply finding pleasure in their gazes; their touches? Instead of being embraced by the frigid cool, sheâs wrapped up in the strong arms of a loverâthat same rush of adrenaline now found in-between bedsheets as opposed to anywhere near a skating rink.
The downside to all of this, though? She falls in love far too easily, and more often than not, her heart ends up brokenâand sometimes, itâs all her own fault.
SCENE IV. SEOUL, KR â Q2, 2020. SEOUL NATIONAL UNIVERSITY.
âSorry!â Michelle exclaims, in English, to a passerby she accidentally bumped intoâcompletely lost on her first day. It was her momâs idea for her to attend school ( for at least two semesters, anyway ) in Seoul, and even though she was really hesitant at first, she thought that it might be a great opportunity to learn more about where sheâs from. That, and well, sheâd be able to see her grandparents way more often, especially since theyâre getting older. That being said, itâs not been an easy transition, and the culture shock is rampant.
Luckily, she knows how to read and write the language, but thatâs about as far as it goes. Sheâs embarrassingly Americanâher seniors often view her as rude and loud, but she has absolutely no idea about any of the social customs ( and spoiler alert: still doesnât ) and knows that she fucks up a lot. Despite this, she fails to truly pick up on them, even after sheâs been corrected.
After trying to find her first class, she takes a wrong turn and ends up back where she startedâand as she groans in annoyance, someone calls out to her from behind; prompting her to turn around. When she sees a slightly older man approach her, she offers a grin, then a sloppy bow.
âAre you talking to me?â She asks, tilting her head gently; curiously. âYes! Iâm sorry to bother, but I think you might be just who Iâm looking for!â âI... donât think I know what you mean?â Michelle questions, a little creeped out.
Later that week, she attends an audition to join an entertainment company, and even though she has never had training in singing or rapping, she miraculously makes it in... and decides then to skip out on her nursing degree in favor of a totally risky once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
That being said, her momâs going to be beyond livid.
SCENE V. SEOUL, KR â Q1, 2021. BC ENTERTAINMENT HQ.
Having only started training in April of the year prior, itâs not even been one year since Michelle began her training, so when sheâs called into the talent managerâs office, sheâs not expecting to hear any good news. After all, sheâs constantly being told that sheâs lacking in comparison to the other trainees, so how on earth could she have earned a chance to dĂ©but? She knows a girl groupâs being formed and that some of the others sheâs trained with have already been given slots, and have even recorded promotional singles. Needless to say, sheâs not feeling especially confident.
She takes the seat offered to her and does her best to be respectful, and when sheâs informed that sheâs been selected as a member for their upcoming project, she thought it was a joke.
âWhat?â She asks, gobsmacked, and the manager further explains why sheâs chosen. In essenceâwell, at least from what she remembersâhe said that she has great potential, and her skills in English, her unique vocal color, and willingness to learn are all assets to the group in various fashions. Stunned, all she could do was nod and agree with him; realizing then and there that this is actually happening to her. In what seemed like no time whatsoever, sheâll be standing on-stage as a somebody. Sheâll be thrust in front of cameras and made completely vulnerable to the public. Truth be told, she thought sheâd be working hard for a few years before getting a chance to become an idol, but now, itâs consuming all of her reality at a rapid pace.
As scared as she is, she hopes that being given yet another rare opportunity will convince her mom that this is a good idea. She also hopes that sheâs able to pull off the image that theyâve discussed for herâone that rivals that of Snow White and Alice In Wonderland as far as purity is concerned. Itâs no secret that sheâs a bit rough around the edges, so sheâs terrified.
All she can do now is hold out hope for the best, even if only the worst case-scenarios continue to plague her thoughts lately.

The Pal with a Pen
summary: you used to think that having a pen pal was old and out of the trends these days, but when you end up becoming one with a guy carrying the cutest eye smile, you might just be unexpectedly loving it instead.
genre: fluff
a/n: @deepdickdaniel DIS FOR U ARIANE, HAPPY BIRTHDAY GORGEOUS AND ILYSM // *also a disclaimer: i donât know much about penpals and how it all works, so if something is inaccurate or just completely wrong, please understand !! i had to make up the âsite for penpalsâ thing lolol so i know thATâS NOT TRUE* **the title for this scenario is rlly cringy im sorry forgive me**
â
â it was a nice day, and lots of people were out meeting their friends, you included. â you were at a cafe with your friends having countless talks on whatever popped into your mind. â somehow the topic of penpals had come up in your conversation. â because it was quite old and technically out of the trends, you always thought that having a penpal was stupid. â like who could have the time to wait for a single letter and then have to write one back ????? â thats what texting is for lol. â at least that was your opinion. â anyways, your friend had started to talk about it. â âhey, i was doing research for a project and reading some things about penpals. having one seems really cool!â she gushed. â you furrowed your eyebrows and looked at her in curiosity. â âbut all youâre doing is sending letters back and forth. is that not what textingâs for nowadays?â â âgosh Y/N,â you other friend started, giggling. â âdonât be such a party pooper. people used to always have penpals back then. and in all those cliche romance movies, the girl and the boy fall in love sending those lettersâŠâ she teased, bobbing her eyebrows up and down at you. â you scoffed and jokingly pushed her slightly to the side. â âthat only happens in the movies.â â âbut,â she began, âit could happen in real life too. donât you think itâs cool?â â you shook your head firmly. â âyou could literally talk to someone across the world and be really good friends with them! maybe even lovers..â â you shook your head again, tuning out of the conversation and looking outside the window of the cafe. âhaving a penpal couldnât be that interesting, could it? plus, its a hassle having to get the letter to them. â your friend grabbed your arm and threw it around. â âwhy donât you get a penpal? then you can see how cool it is! i swear, by the time you have one, thats all youâll be talking about.â â âi doubt it.â you retorted back. â âyouâll see.â â to prove her wrong, the two of your made a bet about this whole penpal thing. â if you ended up liking this whole penpal thing, you would have to buy her coffee for the next month. â but if you didnât, she would be buying you your favourite donuts for a month âitâs a win-win situation, you thought. â so fast forward to the next week. â you had found a website that connected you to many penpals around the world. â not wanting to talk to someone so far away, you chose someone in South Korea, where you currently resided. â you received their information, and started the letter after the site let you know that the person you paired with had been alerted that the two of you were matched together. â starting your letter, it was very awkward and embarrassing, despite being in the comfort of your own home. â  âhmm⊠what am I supposed to put? this is so weird, ive never done anything like this.â â finally, after a good few hours, you were able to muster up a short paragraph introducing yourself and how you were new to this whole thing. â âhopefully thisâll do, but im still not sure how much i like this..â you trailed off. â it was late, so you decided to send off the mail in the morning. â the penpal was in South Korea, so you expected that it wouldnât take long for you to get a reply back. â and you were right. â about a week later, two pieces of mail had arrived at your doorstep. â one of them containing your bank account information, and the other being unknown. â throwing the known letter to the side, your eyes lingered over the white, small paper in your hand with an address you had seen before. â âhm?â and then you realized, it was your penpalâs address. â hOLY CRAP !!!!!!!!! â YOU WERENâT EXPECTING THE LETTER TO COME BACK FOR ANOTHER WEEK !!!! â YOU WERENâT MENTALLY READY FOR THIS !!!!!!! â your eyes went big, and you almost tripped over your own feet. â not wanting to open the mail yet, you examined the front of the letter. â you noticed that the writing was very neat and organized. â and the name read âKang Danielâ in both Korean and English with a smiley face next to it. â interesting, you thought. â you grabbed the pair of scissors on the counter beside you, and opened the mail. â you immediately saw a pink piece of paper inside, and a blue jelly candy along with a blue sticker. â âhuh?â you whispered to yourself, âhow old is this guy?â â the colours and candy threw you off, and now you were thinking that you may have stated talking to a little boy and not someone your age. â if this was a younger boy you had began to talk to, there was no way you would continue this bet. â you would drop this so-called penpal right this second. â but because you were nice and didnât like to judge, you decided that you would just open up the letter and choose then. â picking out the jelly, you examined it. â âhmm.. doesnât seem bad.â you said, before popping it into your mouth and tasting the sweet flavour of blueberry. â you grasped the smooth paper in your fingers, swiftly flipping it open and beginning to read the continuously neat writing. â you read the words aloud. â âHello Y/N! My name is Kang Daniel, and Iâm excited to be your penpal..â you trailed off. â you slowly read the rest of the letter, and by the end, you unconsciously held a wide grin. â but once you realized, you immediately stopped grinning. â âno, stop it Y/N. you need to win the bet.â â you quickly wrote a letter back to Daniel, and waited about another week. â this time in your letter, you bluntly asked for a photo of Daniel, just so you know who you were talking to. â when you had received a reply, and small photo had fallen out just as you ripped opened the white packaging. â you eyes stared at the photo of Daniel. â WOW !!! â HE WAS A GOD ! â so he was nice and good-looking ??? â you scored a good one Y/N. â you just had to admit, he carried the cutest eye smile, along with his similarity to a bunny. â it made your heart warm, but that feeling wasnât there for long. â you just happened to remember the bet, and how this guy might not be what you think he is. â as you read further on the letter, you noticed that he wanted a picture back. â you thought about it, and decided, why not? â taking your polaroid, you took a simple photo of part of your face, not wanting to show the whole thing. â slipping the polaroid into your envelope, you began your response back. â as you wrote, you didnât forget to mention that he had a very nice smile. â and as you thought about it again, your heart tingled and you felt yourself getting hot. â stop blushing Y/N! this is so weird⊠â and as expected, his reply came within the next three days of sending yours out. â grasping the thin paper in the envelope and reading it, you almost fainted. â âhe wants to meet me?! but weâve only been talking for like, three weeks!â â your friend sighed, âjust meet him. you saw what he looked like anyway. what if heâs even better looking in person?â â you blushed slightly at the thought, but brushed it off and responded back. â âeven so, isnât it dangerous? this guy could be a murder for all i know!â â she shook her head, grabbed you by the shoulders roughly, and turned you around. â âfor some reason, i donât know why, just trust me. i have a good feeling about him.â â because she was your closest friend, you had a hard time saying no, and in the end, you backed down anyway. â her puppy eyes and persuasive words got you every single time. â you got home that night, and had a lot of time for yourself to just think about what to do. â of course, you wrote a simple letter back to Daniel, giving him the okay and where to meet. â âhm.. maybe the cafe? yes, the cafe! okay, now, how do i make sure iâm not meeting a total stranger who could possibly kidnap me?â your night ended on those thoughts, as you wanted to complete the rest of the letter in the next day. â in the following morning, you rushed to complete the letter to Daniel. â âsit in the back corner of the shop, and ask for Jisung to make two iced Americanos for us..â you recited the words as you wrote them onto the page. â not long after that, you phoned Jisung. â it would have been weird if Daniel asked for Jisung without knowing anything, so you called him to let him know of the situation and who Daniel was. â (also to make sure Daniel wasnât dangerous lolol). â âhey, Jisung?â â you instantly heard a cheery voice on the other end of the line, and knew immediately that it was him. â âHey Y/N! Whatâs up?â â âso..â you started, giving him the instructions so that you wouldnât die the day you meet Daniel. â after Jisung heard all of this, the only thing that came out of his mouth was, âhow many Americanos?â â needless to say, you face palmed super hard. â Danielâs letter got to you about a week later, saying that he was excited to meet you, and that heâd be expecting some good quality drinks when he got there. â (and so, about a week later, when you two were scheduled to meet, he did indeed enjoy the Americano, but never told you that). â the day you both met would forever be unforgettable, especially because it was the day you saw that Daniel was very very good-looking in person with a beautiful smile. â you walked into the cafe that day, with Jisung greeting you at the counter and pointing to the furthest table at the back. â you quickly strode over to him, and asked him a question as quick pep-talk. â âJisung! is everything fine?â your words were quick because you were nervous, and obviously he noticed that and laughed. â âdonât be so nervous Y/N. he seems like a good guy, i swear.â you nodded and bid him a small smile, leaving the area and walking off towards the back of the cafe. â your eyes immediately caught the familiar sight of light pink, almost peachy hair. â your heart started beating, and you felt your face become very hot. â as well as your hands, which started to sweat profusely. â as soon as you got close enough, you called out to him, getting his attention straight away. â âDanielâŠ?â â oh my god. â his face was so much better looking in person. â âY/N?â his mouth fell agape as you got even more nervous as he just stared at you. â âYeah, its me.â â âwow,â he spoke, âthe other half of your face is even better than I expected.â â you relaxed, and laughed at his cheesiness. â after that first meeting, there was no way you guys didnât feel anything for one another. â it only took a few months for Daniel to ask you out at the same cafe, where Jisung happily congratulated you guys with muffins and iced americanos. â he would always back hug you, and kiss your forehead (its actually one of his favourite things to do). â he prefers to hold your hand, so whenever the two of you are out together heâll always just randomly take your hand and intertwine it with his, saying cheesy stuff like: â âwow itâs like your hand was made just for mine.â â âyour hand looks heavy, let me hold it for you.â â and the best one: â âcan i see your hand for a second?â â and whenever you mindlessly hold out your hand for him, he always smoothly slides his into yours. â âthanks, your hands looked lonely so i thought iâd keep them company.â â and one day, when you were out with your close friend once again, out shopping with each other, she popped a statement that made you laugh. â âso, when do i get my coffee for a month?â â you laughed and jokingly rolled your eyes. â âsoon!â

âI Read the News Today, Oh Boyâ
Nat Hentoff, Ramparts, November 1967
You see, we havenât really started yet, the Beatles. The future stretches out beyond our imagination. There is musical infinity as well. Weâve only just discovered what we can do as musicians. What threshold we can cross. It doesn't matter so much anymore if weâre No. 1 or on the chart. It's all right if the people dislike us. Just don't deny us. â George Harrison
As the rush to Sgt. Pepperâs Lonely Hearts Club Band confirmed, the Beatles are now Art. Jack Kroll, Newsweekâs analyst of Now Culture, proclaimed âA Day in the Lifeâ to be âthe Beatlesâ âWaste Land.ââ In the New Statesman, composer-critic-musicologist Wilfred Metiers devoted an entire column to an exegesis of the themes of loneliness that make the album âart of an increasingly subtle kind.â
The Beatles, moreover, are Functional Art. Said the Times Educational Supplement (of London): âLennon and McCartneyâs lyrics represent an important barometer to our societyâsentiments which are shared by pupils in every classroom in Britain ... If the recordâs understanding were to be reflected in Britainâs teachers, our schools might be more sympathetic institutions than some are now.â In echo, a school superintendent this past July told a conference of music educators in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, how to start their journey across that alarmingly widening generational gap: âIf you want to know what youths are thinking and feeling, you cannot find anyone who speaks for them or to them more clearly than the Beatles.â Said Beatles even speak for and to the dead. At the funeral in August of murdered British playwright Joe Orton, the Beatlesâ recording of âA Day in the Lifeâ started the decidedly secular service.
And yet three years ago, Paul McCartney insisted, âWe have no message and arenât trying to deliver one.â What is the message now? On one level, itâs not quite clear, even within the company of the four gurus. Tim Leary announces: âThe Beatles have taken my place. That latest albumâa complete celebration of LSD.â And Paul McCartney, who has indeed taken LSD, says: âAfter I took it, it opened my eyes. We only use one tenth of our brain. Just think what all we could accomplish if we could only tap that hidden part! It would mean a whole new world. If the politicians would take LSD, there wouldnât be any more war, or poverty.â
But George Harrison, once a trip-taker, tells the Los Angeles Free Press: âAcid is not the answer, definitely not the answer. Itâs enabled people to see a little bit more, but when you really get hip you donât need it.â And John Lennon, who has also journeyed somewhere into himself through acid, laughs when told that hippies, actual and acolyte, take the initials of âLucy in the Sky with Diamondsâ as a hortatory message. âNo,â he says, âmy son, Julian, brought a painting home from school and said it was a picture of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.â So what is the message? Look up in the skyâand live.
On another level, however, the message is clear and Beatles-consensual enough. Writing of the Sgt. Pepper implosion, Paul Williams, editor of Crawdaddy, the higher critic of the new sounds and feelings, asserts: âIf thereâs a message, itâs âDig Yourself.â â With a little help from your friends. Itâs getting better all the time, and it doesnât really matter if youâre wrong or right.
But thatâs not all. There is also death. The Beatles are, up to a point, hip to death, more so than any other popular music group has ever been. Eleanor Rigby is dead long before the obsequies. And death grins in âA Day in the Lifeâ of the man who blew his mind out in a car. In the same song, the deaths of miners in Lancaster become âfour thousand holes ... and though the holes were rather small they had to count them all.â
The man in the car is bloody well dead, the crowd of people who stood and stared has turned away, the miners are in holes, but âthough the news was rather sad / Well I just had to laugh. I saw the photograph.â Thus the auto-anesthesia of us all, who will not see pain, who will not believe in death, and who are disappointed when the news is not of pain and death. But could the song also show the Beatlesâ own auto-anesthesia? Having seen pain and having thought of death, do they turn to save themselvesâand their friendsâthrough magic?
Magic? Wilfred Mellers finds one common bond in the music of Boulez, Cage, Bob Dylan and the Beatlesââan attempt to return to magic, possibly as a substitute for belief.â In an interview with Miles in the International Times, Paul McCartney says: âWith any kind of thing, my aim seems to be to distort it, distort it from what we know it as, even with music and visual things and to change it from what it is to see what it could be. To see the potential in it all. To take a note and wreck it and see in that note what else there is in it, that a simple act like distorting it has caused. To take a film and to superimpose on top of it so you canât quite tell what it is anymore, itâs all trying to create magic, itâs all trying to make things happen so that you donât know why theyâve happened.âÂ
And George Harrison, anxious for serenity, talks about being only 24 âin this incarnation,â and goes on: âWeâre Beatles, and itâs a little scene and weâre playing and weâre pretending to be Beatles, like Harold Wilsonâs pretending to be Prime Minister . . . Theyâre all playing. The Queen is the Queen. The idea that you could wake up and it happens that youâre Queen, itâs amazing but you could all be Queens if you imagine it. . . theyâll have a war quickly if it gets too good, theyâll just pick on the nearest person to save us from our doom. Thatâs it, soon as you freak out and have a good time, itâs dangerous, but they donât think of the danger of going into some other country in a tank with a machine-gun and shooting someone. Thatâs all legal and aboveboard, but you canât freak outâthatâs stupid.â
Magic is dangerous to the world, but the world is more dangerous to the Beatlesâand to their friends. And so, there is the leap into the magic of the loving community. We all live in our yellow submarine and our friends are all on board. With our loveâwe could save the worldâif they only knew. [But since they donât know] âTurn off your mind, relax, and float downstream. It is not dying, it is not dying.â In this, the Beatles and the hippies are together in a search for peace.
And so the Beatles no longer speak to the very young who do not yet know how dangerous the world is, how efficiently numbing, how full of little boxes for them. The very young have turned to the plastic Monkees; but the older teens and many in their twenties and beyond are listening. On the other hand, the Revolver disc was dismissed by a class in a large industrially-centered English school with the words: âAw no, sir, we donât like that: itâs all Chinky.â
Beatles records are not on the jukeboxes in the black ghettos nor, I expect, are they the food of magic for those in the lower tracks of any of our schools. Those young abandoned magic with Santa Claus. The Beatles are increasingly for the comfortable and afraidâafraid to be lonely, afraid to be Eleanor Rigby. It is true, as Frank Kofsky writes in the National Guardian, âThere are millions of devout followers of Dylan, the Stones, the Beatles, and all the rest, who are in opposition to the society that spawned them and are, in the words of a Jefferson Airplane song, âtrying to revolutionize tomorrow.â In hippie communities like San Franciscoâs Haight-Ashbury, they strive to realize the new socialist man (my label, not theirs) who will be capable of fulfilling to the limit the creative potential of the human race, especially in the arts.â
But, even with a little help from their friends, will these revolutionizers of tomorrow-through love, through consciousness-expansion, through digging themselves on their yellow submarine-change whatâs happening out there? Even if you could spike LBJâs root beer with LSD, what then?
However, as for expanding creative potential among those in the beloved community, the Beatles are indeed among the liberators. They started nibbling at Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. (In that incarnation, George Harrison also picked up on Chet Atkins and Duane Eddy.) They were less black-inflected than the Animals and the Rolling Stones; but along with them and other young British rockers brushed by the blues, the Beatles turned millions of American adolescents onto what had been here all the hurting time. But the young here never did want it raw so they absorbed it through the British filter. Oh yes, some later found Muddy Waters and Howlinâ Wolf and now theyâre into their own kind of greyboating with Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield and Big Brother and the Holding Company, but thatâs a trip, as it has to be, with a return ticket. I mean, Shankar is beloved, but if he put an evening raga on you at high noon, would you know?
Anyway, the Beatles went onâinto and through Buddy Holly, the Nashville communion, Bob Dylan, the Who, the Beach Boys. They were getting to where, as Paul McCartney put it, they could be influenced by themselves. And in their wake they left behind the fake imperatives of the 32-bar tune, âconsonantâ changes, steady tempos. Harmonies shifted vertiginously, their early modalities grew strange branches, voicings continually surprised themselves, and uncommonly ecumenical textures appeared âthe sitar in âNorwegian Wood,â guitar tracks running backwards on âIâm Only Sleeping,â sitar and electronic sounds in âLove You Too,â more electronics in âTomorrow Never Knows.â Writing of the latter, Mellers discovered âa new sonorous experience in amalgamating avant-garde jazz (Mingus-like jungle noises, Cage-like electronics, folk penta-tonicism, Indian sitars).â And in the Mellotron overlay in âPenny Lane,â he wondered if Lennon and McCartney had been digging Charles Ives.
Sgt. Pepper has further disintegrated paper categories and boundaries to get to where the Beatles could hear where they belong at the moment. Their first album had been recorded in one day. This one, with four to six sessions a week, evolved through more than three months, and is the most heterogeneous, heady mix of possibilities in pop music history. Combs and paper over a string octet and harp on âLovely Ritaâ; multiple tracks of percussion and strings into which sitar, tamboura and swor-mandel are imbedded, swirling between 4/4 and 5/4 on âWithin You Without You.â Three tambouras, a dilruba, a tabla, an Indian table-harp, a sitar (Harrison), three cellos, and eight violins on âSheâs Leaving Homeâ; Lennon on Hammond organ, recorded at different speeds and then overlaid with electronic echoes, while four harmonicas disport in Being for the âBenefit of Mr. Kite.â And on and on to the 41-piece orchestra in âA Day in the Lifeâ with, as Jack Kroll exults, âa growling, bone-grinding crescendo that drones up like a giant crippled turbine struggling to spin new power into a foundered civilization.â
Where now? The next move, says Paul McCartney, âseems to be things like electronics because itâs a complete new field and thereâs a lot of good new sounds to be listened to in it. But if the music itself is just going to jump about five miles ahead, then everyoneâs going to be left standing with this gap of five miles that theyâve got to all cross before they can even see what scene these people are on ... Thatâs what Iâd like to do. Iâd like to look into that gap a bit.âÂ
As George Harrison says, âYou see, we havenât really started yet, the Beatles. The future stretches out beyond our imagination.â The Beatles are absolutely fre-e-e. âThe competition among the bestâBob Dylan, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, among themâis no longer for money,â observes pop chronicler Al Aronowitz in the Saturday Evening Post. âThey already have enough of that. The competition is in music . . . The best artists in the businessâthe aristocracyâare moving into positions of power. Theyâre making fewer and fewer compromises with commercialism. Thereâs hardly anything interesting happening outside this exclusive circle.â
Meanwhile Rap Brown tries to find the revolution and the strategists of the New Politics scour the new class for their constituency. But to the Beatles, are they for real? Why be up-tight about anything? âAt the back of my brain somewhere,â Paul McCartney says, âthere is something telling me now that ... it tells me in a cliche too, it tells me that everything is beautiful.â And so it may be. Who can put down magic that works for the magician?
Must everything be related constantly to the non-psychedelic world? I keep thinking about the Beatles as âan important barometer to our society,â and I remember Donald Michael predicting in The Next Generation that the control centers âwill be able to tolerate groups living at different paces and styles, if they show no deliberate intent to alter significantly the drive or direction of the prevailing social processes . . . Isolated and insulated from major and majority preoccupations of the society, and thereby offering no threat to the status quo, these enclaves will provide opportunities for more whimsical, personally paced styles of life.â
But what the hell, like the rest of us with stereo, the Beatles get by with a little help from their friends and they do live up to their promise: âA splendid time is guaranteed for all.â The musicâs getting better all the time as the indignant desert birds hover about the shape with a lion body and the head of a man.

Kevin Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Back at it again. Geez, when I started my tumblr (back in 2014 I think) I had the intention to update it regularly, every week maybe. But I lost track of it, like already one week after I started it. I feel bad for not updating it. One of my biggest regrets in life is probably that I never had a diary, because my memory just keeps getting worse and worse at the moment, and when I talk to people they are able recall so many thing from their past and I don't even know how to do simple math I learned in 4th grade. I cannot remember a single event from 4th grade or elementary school in general.
Okay this is just me thinking things right now, but I also feel like the reason why I never had a diary or never bothered to write blog entries is because I'm not a creative writer. And I'm not smart and I have no skills whatsoever and it's even worse when I write English sentences. And some people actually have personality and talent to make the most trivial things sound interesting. And I just feel like a brain dead person slamming my phalanges furiously on a keyboard. But should I feel bad about it? Pretty much everyone shares their opinions on thoughts about everything on the internet nowadays. I should not care about how bland I sound to other people.
I really wanted to gather some thoughts why university didn't work out for me. I feel like I never ⊠I tried to think about the reason why I failed, but most of the time I was in sad mode and blamed myself for everything, which always ended in a result that was not authentic to the truth and therefor not downright acceptable. And so I  never came to a real conclusion. I will try to think about it now, because I don't feel too depressed, so it should be fine, right? Right?
So first of all, going to university was mistake to begin with. It could have worked out, but the circumstances at that time were not optimal. In fact they were terrible. So it was kind of foolish to think I could pull that off, but there was also nobody who convinced me I couldn't.
A huge factor that made it hard for me to survive university was that every semester I felt some kind of anxiety because I didnât know what was going to happen. Grades, classes, other students and just choosing things was very overwhelming. Very, very overwhelming. On some days I was just crying like the whole day, because I didnât know what actually happens when Iâm done with university. How to move on? Iâve always been a directionless wanderer, who didnât know what he wanted to do in life. I just started university and it already felt pointless, like it would go nowhere and nevertheless I was moving on. One year passed, two years, three... and nothing changed. I collected a lot of credits (oh well... not enough for my creditors though) and still I couldn't figure out âwhy am I doing this?â.
My major was area studies and I wasnât really enjoying it. I just felt lost and once again overwhelmed. This whole course of studies was missing a clear structure. Which was also the point of it: âJust go ahead and choose the things you have the most interest inâ, like that kind of decree completely works against my own nature. I desperately need someone to tell me what to do. So helplessly I chose the most nonsense courses I could find. I signed up for Japanese class and it was so hard. The first semester examination I got only a fourteen, oops. I literally struggled so bad and nearly getting nothing accomplished the whole year and thatâs why I ended up dropping that course and felt really bad. But I wanted to try it again, so I took the next semester very very light with only two classes, so of course that extended my university existence by some time. So many frustrating things happened during that time and to my minor, which was agricultural sciences. The readings ended up being not what I was looking for and the schedule really worked against my major.
Also some of the professors were really strict and set up their individual rules. For instance the Japanese teacher was incredibly strict. You could not miss her lessons and you could not be late. And at this time I really struggled with depression and I was crying and begging this woman I was like âI love this class, Iâm trying so hard, please give me another chance next yearâ and she said that it was OK and that I can be part of the class again, but a year later she was like âI changed my mind, get outâ and that was the point, where I started to give up and stopped trying, like, at all. But sometimes I would get a professor that I like and I would only have them for one semester, a lot of times I tried to take multiple classes with that person if the subject fulfilled credits for the same requirement, even though the class would not help to get a clear structure in my major. Like I took a lot of Mongolian classes. How would that help me with my Japanese Major? I don't know.
In addition I didnât have an easy time making friends there. Thatâs another thing that can kinda be frustrating about university life to me. You see a lot of people who take one or two classes that you take as well and you kinda never see the same people. You develop relationships with people that are in the same class but after the semester; theyâre gone. That was a big hurdle for me to jump through. I did not get used to it and I didnât kinda like how everything felt so temporary.
None of the people I had contact with in my Japanese course did graduate by the way. All of them are still stuck somewhere. Some of them still have to pass Japanese class I (out of IV) and it has been four years since we signed up for it. Ideally you should be done with the whole thing in three years. So probably even if I managed to finish all of my major and minor courses, I would not be done with Japanese class yet, cause it's so damn hard and my creditor would get mad at me and I had cancel university either way.
So I was clueless and not doing very well and the worst part was probably that there is a lot of pressure in society (and creditors, student loan companies etc.) where they tell you âOkay you have to graduate from university in three years. Do it right. Know exactly what you want!â and for a lot of people, including myself, this is not a realistic goal. Itâs just not easy. I think itâs realistic if you fail something. I think perfection and expectation of perfection in society is really bizarre. The other thing I realized during this time was, unlike youâre going to be a doctor or a lawyer or in that sort of profession, you get a university degree and thatâs awesome but how much practically do you use that degree? I wish I would have chosen something like business studies, because I think ⊠just having more of an understanding of topics like that, would have been helpful throughout my life, especially more than the area studies.
So these are some aspects that turned university into my personal nightmare, but the truth or a big part of it is, that university just felt inconvenient. I'm a lazy piece of shit; I never felt the need to study for any exam, but spoiler: in university you won't survive without it. You need to know how to study. Studying is actually a skill, I didn't know that, now I learned the hard way.
So all I have for now is my shattered university past, a scary student loan debt mountain haunting me every night and also no job. Unemployed for over a year now. I don't know if this will ever change. The worst part of it is I feel like I'm not doing enough to get out of this misery. In fact I do nothing. I want to change but like 90% of my time I have no faith and feel hopeless and that nothing will ever work out for me.
I need to get a whole load of things off my chest first in order to move one. Also I need to find the English setting for my good friend OpenOffice because right now everything is red underlined and it's low key driving me crazy. (âŠ) All right, I found it. Also I'm not gonna grammar correct or spellcheck anything. It's just lines I write down to remind myself of a few things and I have to get this all out before I forget it. So screw editing it!
The last few days I started to do shit I usually hate doing. It's not like I'm a messy person, but cleaning my room felt suddenly more important than ever before. I also stitched up my curtains, even though I was okay with them being way too long for years. And I built two shelves, because we had a few old planks in our yard and my walls were so empty, they felt like prison cell walls to me, so I thought âyes of course SHELVESâ. They look fantastic and I'm proud of myself because I made something useful, but they remind my that I spend my time not the way I'm supposed to. They make me feel bad every time I look at them and I look at them a lot, cause they're hanging on my wall.
Yesterday I set up autumn decorations even though it is kinda too early. I also already did some of the Halloween decorations. I always get into a spooky mood, as soon as the weather gets colder, because it feels like authentically fall. I have to wear sweaters or long sleeves because I'm so cold all the time.
Also I found a keyboard in the room of the guy that lived with us, but who is dead now and I remembered how I have always wanted to learn to play piano. But I don't know if I would be very good at it. I feel like the older I get the less focus I have with things. And I also feel just like I don't ever really sit down and like do anything.
Anyway, the dead guy's name was Lutz and he died in April because of cancer. He and my mom shared the rent for the house we live in, so fifty percent of the rent fee is missing since he died. Our landlord is really mad, because he wants the money from us now and we do not have it and Lutz's family doesn't want to pay off his debts either. It's a pretty dire situation and my mom's lawyer sucks and gradually makes our dilemma worse and worse and she doesn't realize it. I don't know what comes next, my mom never talks about these things and a part of me also doesn't want to know. I'm dealing with a lot of things myself and I wish I could close my eyes and vanish from the surface of this planet forever. Just like the Avatar did. The cool one, not that James Cameron Pocahontas plagiarism. But I'm afraid this is not how it works. Suicide would be an option. But I'm just too much of a coward.
To give up or to not give up on life. Fighting the desire to just lie down and die gets harder each day. It already has been hard for a long time now. I know people get homeless. Maybe I am in that exact position right now. I never thought about it. But maybe there is a high chance that it'll happen to me next, unless I do something, even if it already might be too late. I know I can't change the mind of my mom, she will stay here, in this building, until she gets thrown out under legal authority. And I knew about this since a long time and I definitely already could have done something about it as well, like trying harder to find a new place and job, but ⊠depression ⊠and I chose not to. That's just the reality situation.
But I really need to get on with looking for a job now (the hardest thing though is to overcome my âlittleâ procrastination thing whenever I'm about to do it). Two years of therapy gave me enough time to reflect and figure out what I possibly could do and maybe I really can do two or three things, besides lying in bed all day. The biggest issue right now is my low self-esteem. If you never had a real job in your whole life, you will obviously have a hard time to believe in your own abilities. This is what I got criticized for when I worked as Concierge last summer âSorry, you're too insecure about your actionsâ and at job interviews I get told âYou don't really convince me that you want this jobâ. And yeah how can I convince anyone I'm able to do something I never did before without straight up lying to their face? I guess if I want to apply for job, I need to put on a mask made of confidence and lies.
My psychiatrist once told me, that my only chance to get a job is social connections (his social connections). I already talked about how I became âfriendsâ with my therapist some time ago. His intentions didn't feel honest to me and everyone else saw this, like, big red flag and yelled at me, to give up on this attachment, but I am weak and I don't have anyone else I can talk to. I gave him another chance and he invited me and said that we should travel to Thailand together. And I was against it, honestly, like from the beginning. But you know, he is a manipulative piece of shit and I really wanted to see Thailand, because I probably wouldn't get another chance like this, in my whole life. So I thought: how horrible can it be to fly to Thailand for two weeks, with your psychiatrist? Turns out it can be pretty horrible. He was watching me all the time, he was watching what I was eating, when I was messaging on Whatsapp. I never had two minutes for myself, he even came into the bathroom while I was changing, he was telling me what to do, when to cross the street, he dictated absolutely everything. So on day three I called him out and he said âOkay then let's fly back homeâ and of course I know he wanted me to beg him to stay here and that I would do better and follow his orders, cause he pays for everything. But I said âFine, let's fly back homeâ and we walked to the travel agency in Thailand and the lady at the counter said a ticket back home today would be around 8,000$ each. He told the lady that we need to talk and would come back in an hour, if we still consider to book the tickets, but I didn't want to take anymore of his crap. So he had to book the tickets and I didn't talk to him the whole 24 hours we needed to get back to Germany, he tried to discuss this situation the whole time, even tried to convince me to travel with him again; this time to the Netherlands for the weekend because âIt'll work out better than Thailandâ. There is so much more stuff that happened, but I'm not going to elaborate more, at this point I'm so tired of all of this. I'm just glad I finally wrote it down and decided that this friendship was not good for me. Better late than never.
Oh and the worst part is, I also feel like I didn't make any progress in this two years of therapy. I didn't achieve anything, I just wasted time. I'm so annoyed and mad at myself.
All that stress I had the last few months or maybe years and the frustration and the anger I feel every day, caused my autoimmune disease to flare up again.
Short backstory: I noticed a bald patch in my beard area in 2015 and one year later it spread on my head and it was just awful. I had the worst time back then, my dog died, my relationship went to shit, I lost my job as Concierge, I felt like university was going nowhere and my hair started to fall out and it was not a cute look. I had a plum sized spot on the left side, the right side and on top of my head and two spots that molted into one big spot at the back. I went to a dermatologist, he said it's called Alopecia Areata and he told me to put some ointment on it and I did. But nothing changed. I was really desperate, I had a mental break down, including ugly crying in the shower, shaving my head, mental hospital, the whole program. I had a hard time to accept the âbald truthâ.
On Youtube I found a channel, run by a girl named Stella, who made several videos about her struggle with Alopecia Areata (she wasn't the only one btw, but she was the first one who seemed genuine and did not try to sell some fake products. There are so many people on the internet, who use other peopleâs desperation to make themselves richer, it's crazy). In one of her videos she described how she overcame this disease with the help of the AIP diet and I was so amazed. She had all of her hair back and the solution is a diet? I was crying my eyes out for month and it's that simple? Sign me up I thought as I looked a few things up on the internet and basically AIP diet means just allowed to eat warm water. Doesn't actually matter if it's warm or not. No, but seriously almost every food is forbidden on AIP. No bread, rice, potatoes, eggs, diary, sugar, tomatoes, nuts, alcohol, fruits, nothing. All you can eat is meat and green stuff. I started in November and it was exhausting from the beginning. I felt hungry all the time and was craving for something sweet. It's funny how I can go without sugar right now for days, but when you're not allowed to have it, it's all you want. But I was missing coffee the most.
Anyway, after one month of AIP I recognized some white hair on my left patch, and a week later a few pigmented hairs. On Christmas all of my patches had small pigmented hairs growing in (except my beard, which is only thin white hairs until today) and I'm having the worst grammar right now. It's 1 a.m. Anyway during that time I felt amazing, the bald patches were still recognizable, but I felt relieved that my hair came back and I wouldn't go bald.
By march I had all my hair back and I gave a lot of credit to the diet, but also stopped the diet the same month, because although I got all my hair back, I realized that I could not live with all these restrictions forever. The AIP diet was not designed for people with AA. It was made to figure out what kind of food causes your inflammatory, but it's impossible to tell when you have AA. You can't take a bite of a tomato and be like âOh yeah I feel it, this makes my hair fall outâ. Even though a lot people in these self help groups write things like âOh. My. Gosh. I was just drinking a cup of milk and suddenly my whole scalp was itchyâ. Yeah girl, because you wanted it to be itchy. You are desperate and want to find the cause and you want it to stop. And all of this happens, even if your are not aware of it. And blaming certain kinds of food is easy, but dumb. It worked for me, but just because I thought it does. For 4 months I ate vegetables and meat on max, because Stella said it helped, she had proof and I saw it, so I thought it would help me too.
April was again a really hard time for me. My therapist was playing games, my family stressed me out, Lutz died, still no job, my personal financial crisis. And then one day I felt a smooth spot behind my right ear as I was sitting in a train and I was like âOh god, please no, god no no no no no...â. . I recognized a tiny spot at the back of my head before, but I was hoping it was nothing, I didn't want it to be true, now with a second patch I realized Alopecia is back to haunt me.But this time I wanted it to be different. I would not let it take control of my actions again. So I made an appointment at a hairdresser and I was surprised he never heard of AA before as I told him what was going on on my head. As he was shaving the back of my head he pointed out that there actually a few more spots than expected. I accepted it. There's nothing I can do about anyway.
I revisited Stella's Youtube channel and she posted a video update. Her Alopecia came back as well, even though she was still following the AIP diet. So there was no doubt left, that the diet had little to do with the regrowth of my hair. Stella's video and her blog was again so inspirational.
The cure for Alopecia is: there is no cure. It's your emotions. It's sadness, it's anger and stress. This is easy and hard to accept at the same time. I'm still not a hundred percent sure if I can accept this as the one truth. At the moment all of the spots are on the backside of my head, which is good. I mean they are there; but at least I can't see them. The one behind my right ear is as big as my ear right now. And it worries me tbh. Last year I documented the progress of the spots and took pictures every week. Because I was so excited to see my hair grow and I wanted to see the proof that it really happens. I don't know if I should do this again. Stella said the best way to deal with this situation is simply âto not give a shitâ.
And that might be true. But I know, currently it is impossible for me to reach this peace of mind. Everything's a mess right now and I feel like I can't do life and no matter how less I care about my hair, bald spots will spread nevertheless. I have to change my environment first, before I can move on mentally. And this will be frustrating. Searching for a job, having job interviews with bald spots all over my head, probably getting rejected because of it, getting more bald spots, it will be hell but I guess... it is what it is.
It's hard when youâre in a dark place and when your family sucks, and you're like in that mind set where everything is awful. Just taking that one little step up uphill is the hardest part. Maybe writing all of this down finally is a sign that I wildly succeeded and that I can keep going. Or maybe it was just another reason for me to procrastinate again. Who knows?
Well I wish I could end this post on a high note. It's 3am right now and  there was an episode of âMarried... with childrenâ on TV and it was about Kelly being the first female Bundy with a job and she worked at a diner. They made it look like being a waitress is the easiest thing in the world, but Kelly was totally overwhelmed by everything and it was just too real. Too relatable. On her first day as a waitress âSisters Are Doing It For Themselvesâ was playing in the background and I will remember this on my first day of work and it'll empower me to try my best, like Kelly Bundy did. You know, be the best Kelly Bundy you can be.
#a whole day has passed and I did nothing but to write this text#but I feel the sense of accomplishment right now#welcome to my brain#this is just me trying to get things done#and semi failing#also the title of this entry is a reference to that married ... with children episode#which was called 'Kelly Doesn't Live Here Anymore'#which is a reference to some other show's title#it's like title inception

â modââšIâll add to the comments as usual. Anon:âšThe DM ran photos of DK in the exact same outfit with the exact same shopping bags iSaturday â walking alone. Check it out. No way she wore the identical outfit and had the same bags yesterday. The story conveniently tags them as yesterday when it was known N was back in NYC. The âgetawayâ makes for a much better story than 2 friends hanging out like heâs done with several female friends in the past few weeks (Ira, Jarah, Liz) â and been photographed with them too. These pics were set up.
Anon:âšwhat is everyone talking about with norman and what did this DK woman do? iâm late and curious because i really donât want to find a way to dislike norman
Anon:âšgrooooooooossssssssssssss. well if the other rumours are true, she wants a baby w him.
Normansweetpie:âšI honestly am surprised about Norman and Diane. And to the person that said Norman is a horrible person, youâre wrong. Norman liked Diane and I believe that Norman can do whatever he wants to do with his life. If Norman wants to date Diane, thatâs fine.
Anon:âšSo he is w a disgusting famewhoere. completely changes the way i see him. bye bye norman, no longer your fan (and im a lesbian, so this isnât butthurt shit here)
Anon: If this is true, I donât want to go to WSC London now. I donât feel like meeting him if he has been lying to us this whole time.
Anon: Norman has to address this. Heâs getting so much hate. I hope he shuts it down. Please Norman say itâs not true.
Anon:âšI canât believe he lied to us. If this really is true, then everything he says is bullshit.
Anon: Mod, I am at a loss how this whole narrative in the NR fandom went from âDK is vile, theyâre not friends â to âDK is vile theyâre definitely not dating cuz NR is sweet and greatâ to âTheyïżœïżœre dating! Theyâre both vile!ââŠ. Like, where is this coming from? Normanâs own fans would rather believe heâs some sort of vile scumbag than the alternative that maybe, just maybe 1) NR and DK are both decent people? And 2) none of us knows the private details of when/how they got together?
Anon: Mod in your opinion do you think he would have done that? He did things that made us believe he was single so do you think he was really lying to us the whole time? I want to cry if he was. I thought he was different. Do you think thereâs a chance that he is just friends with her?
Anon: Just friends my ass. Theyâve been together off and on for over a year. Time for fans to take off the delusional glasses and accept it. Heâs a good ACTOR, isnât he?
Anon: II thought that if this happened I would feel angry and sad and disappointed. But I feel relaxed and calm and I wish Norman finally have found the woman that will stay with him till the end. I feel really happy for him.
Anon: I hope that Norman realizes that Diane probably called the paparazzi and set that whole thing up so they would finally be outed as a couple. She is a real piece of work.
Anon: A few choice words like unwise, irresponsible, childish, selfish, asinine, and dishonest, as well as many more like them are all coming to mind right now.
Anon: I know itâs his life but I think he needs to say or do something for his fans now. Just like when he shut down the EK rumor. Btw, TMZ also reported that as official too, if I recall and that was never true either. Please say something about the truth of this, Norman
Anon: In the midst of this DK stuff, someone on Facebook who works at LaGuardia airport says she talked to Norman at work today. Do you know if heâs heading somewhere?
Anon: What had Diane done and why does everyone hate her?
Anon: I am an extremely disappointed⊠I was gonna say fan, but I can no longer even bring myself to write that much less say it. What an effing nightmare. Seriously, Iâm not sure if Norman could make a more foolish decision.
Anon: I want to be clear this is not a DK hate (or even dislike) post. I have to say I find it a bit ironic of NR fans blaming the trash mags for NR not being able to âlive his personal lifeâ. If Iâm not mistaken didnât the pap pics originate in daily mail? Doesnât DK and her people have a deal with them and they set up pics all the time? So Iâm assuming DK or both of them are courting this attention, yes? I think we need PR wife again, lol.
Anon: Ok wait, it doesnât have to mean they are together. She could have been hanging with him like he does with a lot of his female friends. And I stil think the pics are only one day. Not a âweekend getawayâ I really hope he says something now, though. This back and forth is too much. I pray itâs friendship and nothing more because I donât want to have to stop supporting him. Say something Norman.
Anon: âšI cannot think of a single nice thing to say about Norman right now and Iâm not sure I will ever be able to again. Anon: Dont you think that this is kinda ridicilous , this whole dk / nr is going on since 2015 , if they were together , they would already admit that and dont forget joshua and diane broke up a long time ago , so nr and her had a long time chance to admit it đ(sorry my english is not very good ) âš
Susa206: Everybody should calm down! In my opinion itÂŽs obviously, that they are a couple. I think we donÂŽt have the right to judge about his or her life! Nobody knows what really happened between DK and her former boyfriendâŠ.. I never liked her ⊠but the most important thing, is that he is happyâŠ. and we have to accept his choiceâŠ. ( sorry again for my bad english)
Anon: So are we to believe they have been so careful to not be seen out together in more than a year and now they are caught in his parking garage? Set up
Anon: she is just so unlikeable. ive read her interviews and seen her interviews. she is not likeable. this is bad new for his brand, but its his life. i know i wonât tune into anything he does if she is accompanying him or being mentioned. i know celebs are humans, but i also consider them brands that i choose to consume. ive no interest in using my money & attention to help her brand, and wonât consume anything she is attached to. sorry normski, not interested if you come w her as an add on
Anon: But hold on remember when he was photographed with Elsa Hosk? and they arenât together. I know because of DK, itâs strange but I donât think it proves it yet. Until Norman comes out and says it.
Anon: Mod , i would like to help you a bit. I also dont believe that they are together , in fact i do believe Diane might have a crush on Norman (who not) and im sure Norman knows that , but it seems he is enjoying his single life and told her that , and still wants to hang out as friends with her , because why not? Maybe they were out having dinner , maybe he or she made dinner at their homes! đ( just what i think about the whole dk/n thing)
Anon: this norman stuff with TMZ, is utter bullshit. they are probably just friends and so what if they are dating, they should be happy that they are happy.
Anon: Mod , it seems you doubt about if they are friends or not âŠ.
Anon: Mod, do you think they really are together or do you think the friends theory is possible? I just want to cry if itâs true. Itâs not that heâs with someone but that it could be her! I hate her. She is nothing like him she is so full of herself and now he looks like a cheater and a liar. I didnât think he was anything like that but now he looks like such a fake person. Not who he said he was to his fans. Iâm so sad. What do you think Mod??
Anon: If them unloading a car together is the smoking gun on their relationship⊠damn! I am in a relationship with a bunch of cab drivers! Dammit⊠and here I am thinking Iâm single! âš
Rebellacycle: Iâm sorry Iâm laughing at a lot of this this man canât be any where near a woman or his female fan loose their shit â oh heâs with her no â if he is dating her at least she is close to his age if she slept with him Iâd hi- five her good for you Diane đđ€ŁđȘđč let him live his life I donât know her we really as fans donât know the both of them itâs his and her business if they are dating or not what ever and I would love to be at his next convention to see if these â fans â ask him about it
Anon: Sorry!! I meant good luck to HIM. I want the man to be happt but she is just YUCK. My bad. You always rule. Iâm going to drink whiskey til I puke this weekend. Why do I care? I have no clue but am just disappointed.
Anon: Can someone post the pics of DK that are supposedly from Saturday, please. Also, are those pics on tmz from yesterday or Thursday. Iâm confused!
Anon:âšSooooooo are they together or were they just carpooling to like Whole Foods and Best Buy or something?
Anon:âšIâm done with NR. Cannot support this disgraceful behaviour whatsoever. More to the point how can he be okay with a supposed partner calling the paps on them? Entire thing is a mess. he is not who he pretends he was.
Anon:âšNR and DK kept their relationship hidden this long because they knew people would never forget about how their relationship got started (cheating) and they knew if they went public they would be one of the most hated couples in Hollywood. I seriously want to throw up she is such a horrid human being. N has developed really shit taste in women.
Anon:âšHere it goes. Seems like we finally got our proof and Norman and DK came out and made it public finally. They are together. You canât tell me sheâs just a friend cruising around with him and unloading his car. Not after all. Iâm so disgusted, I almost vomited. I canât believe Norman fell for this woman. Iâm SO SO disappointed and disgusted! đ
Anon:âšThose two horrible people deserve each other. And they deserve every ounce of hate that they get as long as they are together.
Anon:âšIsnât there a simple way to clear it up? One or both of their reps will confirm or deny the rumors, right? NR had to do that with the EK thing. Plus I think isnât DK going to LA for Oscar weekend stuff? If she gives any interviews Iâm sure theyâd ask about this, right?

Daleâs Top 21 Videogame Experiences of 2017
Howdy, everyone! Welcome to my first blog of 2018, and what better way to kick it off than reflecting back on my top gaming experiences of 2017! I had a blast with my top 11 gaming experiences blog from last year, which was really more like 30-40 moments condensed down to 11 entries. I did a similar thing for this year, but for a whopping 21 entries instead. That is nearly double the fun! Just be forewarned, this is a doozy of a read, so without further ado, let us get onto the list! 21) End-Label-Fever
My buddy Matt introduced me to unofficial N64 end labels that were available online. I became immediately envious and ordered the complete set off Etsy and promptly applied them to all my games. I am still befuddled to why Nintendo never had them to begin with. 20) Quantities are Limited! I ordered several games from Limited Run throughout 2017. If you are unfamiliar with Limited Run, they publish physical versions of former digital-only PS4/Vita games, but true to their name in small print runs that you have usually only several minutes to order online as soon as they are available or you are out of luck. Thankfully I had no problem getting my orders in on them and I was stoked to get the physical versions of games I was super into such as Oxenfree, Firewatch, Windjammers and Read Only Memories. 19) A Certain NES Guide Book
Past few years I have gotten into YouTuber Pat Contriâs work a bit. I first found out about him on an AVGN guest spot, and have been keeping up with his podcasts and videos since. A couple years ago he released a mammoth tome dubbed The Ultimate Guide to the NES Library and as the title eludes it tries to be the ultimate guide by reviewing every American, Europe and Australlian release for the NES and have a bunch of bonus columns and features to round it off. I try to read two-to-four reviews before bed at least a few days a week and I have been doing that for just over a year now. I have found out about a ton of NES games I have never heard of before or knew very little of, plus it was interesting to find out their takes on the games I grew up on. This has lead to me tracking down a few NES games throughout the year such as Roundball, Crystalis and Indy Heat to name a few. I still have a ways to go and am only up through Rolling Thunder on the reviews as of this writing. 18) MmmmmâŠ.Pie The last couple years I have been hearing a lot of buzz about all-in-one emulator machines known as RetroPies. Questionable legalities of the device aside, they have risen in popularity this past year and I inevitably stumbled into playing a couple variations of it at various places throughout the year. One person had a custom arcade cabinet with it installed and we tore it up playing countless arcade fighters and brawlers on it. Another time another friend and I went out of our way to search for obscure versions of Street Fighter ports and had a decent time experiencing the original Street Fighter and surprisingly decent versions of Street Fighter Alpha on the GameBoy Color and Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the SNES. I told one friend my joy last year experiencing the import-only arcade release of Ring of Destruction, and sure enough we found it and slaughtered each other for quite a bit on it. The best RetroPie moment was finding an English-patched version of Super FirePro Wrestling Premium on SNES and the worst was when playing a RetroPie for the first time for whatever reason the first game of the several thousand available on it I decided to play was Shaq-Fu, a game I already ownïżœïżœïżœtwo copies ofâŠdonât ask. 18) The Return of Bimmy & Jimmy!
I was surprised with the out of nowhere announcement and quick release of Double Dragon IV at the beginning of the year. I am presuming the 16-bit Super Double Dragon is no longer cannon. Got a chance to play it with Matt shortly after its release and I loved how it captured the NES feel of the classic 8-bit brawlers and we had a good time with it until we hit one of the final levels. That level was filled with mazes of mind-boggling auto-scrolling ramps and pillars that pop down from out of nowhere and instantly kill you much in the same vein as that godawful N64 Sub-Zero game, but worse! It was an instant turn-off to an otherwise fine co-op brawler. Limited Run had a nice collectorâs edition of it up for sale recently but those memories of those nasty pillars and ramp sequences convinced me to stay away. 17) Now Youâre Playing With Super Power! I loved the NES Classic in 2016 and in 2017 I had to make sure to line up in stores a couple hours ahead of opening to procure the inevitable SNES Classic. While it has nine less games compared to the NES Classic, the quality and scope of those 21 SNES games is far greater than the ones featured on NES Classic. Finally experiencing the previously unreleased StarFox 2 was a treat and I made sure to first play the first game I owned for my SNES 20 years earlier in Street Fighter 2: Turbo. Me and my friends Derek and Ryan had a ball taking turns to see how far we could last in the unbelievably-hard Super Ghouls ân Ghosts (it was not all that far). A couple months later I got my brother one for his birthday and we spent many hours failing to make significant progress in the brutally-tough-yet-super-fun Contra 3. I believe we only got to the third level. One day we shall conquer it, and one day I will sit down and take the time to get through EarthBound! 16) Them Damn YouTubers!
I mentioned YouTuber Pat Contri earlier and I think 2017 has become the year where I routinely started to follow several YouTube videogame personalities. Before I primarily stuck with the crew at GiantBomb for most of my online gaming-related videos and still do for most of them, but I like mixing in a little variety from several other YouTubers. I will give a shout out to Pat Contri again for his many podcast excerpts that entertain me, as well as James Rolfe and his Cinemassacre crew for the always-excellent AVGN videos and letâs play streams he posts with his co-host Mike Matei. Gaming Pick-ups and hidden gem list rundowns sound kind of blah on paper, but the man known as âMetal Jesusâ and his wide array of mostly likeable guest hosts find a way to make them entertaining and I cannot help but watch nearly every video he posts on his channel. I have been following Jeremy Parishâs writing and Retronauts podcasts for well over a decade and have been a huge fan of his Works line of YouTube videos chronicling countless GameBoy, NES and SNES games. They are exhaustively researched and well-produced and filled with tons of facts and behind-the-scenes info that your average online review likely would not have. Finally I will give a shoutout to two more retro-themed gaming channels, The Gaming Historian and Classic Gaming Quarterly. Both YouTubers do deep dives into gamingâs past and put a lot of work into their videos and as a result they do not have as frequent videos as other channels, but their quality makes up for the quantity. I am beyond belief, but my hat is off to the host of CGQ for making his âLetâs Readâ videos where he highlights and notates tidbits from his favorite articles of old-school gaming magazines and somehow makes them must-see material! 15) I AM TUROK! Last year I mentioned how I got a Retron 5, a handy device that allows you to play several retro game systemâs cartridges on an HDTV with clean visuals like how I remember them instead of the dreadful fuzziness you get when hooking up old-school systems on HDTVs with the older composite cables that came with the system. I finally finished my first game using the system in 2017, and the game that got that honor was the long forgotten GameBoyâŠ.gemâŠ.Turok: Battle of the Bionasaurs. It came out alongside the more popular N64 game and was a simple 2D side-scrolling action/platformer game. If you are wondering why that random GameBoy game it is because I spent several summers on a farm with nothing but a GameBoy growing up so these no-frills basic platformers resonate with me in a unique way.
The Retron has the ability to download an exhaustive vault of Game Genie/Action Replay codes onto an SD card from their website and that came in handy here or else I stood no chance of beating this game. Even though the infinite health made dealing with enemies a breeze, the limitations of the GameBoyâs screen made platforming a bit of a hurdle than I intended so I still died plenty of times, and if it was not for taking advantage of Retron 5âs save-state feature I definitely would not have finished it. I have all the other Turok games on GB (there are five of them!) and eventually would like to get through most of them as these simple watered-down GB conversions are nice little pallet-cleansers to start off a gaming session. Speaking of the Retron 5, Hyperkin released an adaptor for it this year allowing it to play Master System and Game Gear games. I picked it up, but kind of regretted it afterwards as it took a few hoops of downloading and applying updates/patches from Hyperkinâs website in a particular way until a couple hours of trial-and-error got it to finally work. I do not believe the effort was worth it though because I have no Master System games and only six or seven Game Gear games. I did make sure to play quite a bit of Game Gear Road Rash immediately afterwards for my troubles. HeyâŠ.if I were to track down just five Master System games what would you recommend? Tweet me your picks! 14) The Year of VRâŠ.No, Not That VR
I keep hearing about how Playstation VR, Oculus and HTCâs virtual reality sets that came out over the last couple of years have legitimized VR and brought it up to par with core console based gaming. However, I am just not seeing it. The price point is the primary deal breaker for me, and then factoring in the space factor for all the cables and some games that require you to move around is another major deal-breaker too. This past year saw some AAA console games get their full single player mode available in VR like Resident Evil 7 and Skyrim that I would not mind checking out one day, but most of what I see that is playable out there seem like decent little mini-games and shooting gallery variants, but not worth the barriers to invest into a proper VR setup. If you have it and enjoy it, thatâs awesome, but I simply cannot justify crossing that line. That said, I still have the original VR monstrosity that is the Virtual Boy and 2017 was THE year it became active again! I was missing the AC power adaptor hub for my Virtual Boy that I misplaced long ago, and I searched for them on eBay and they were surprisingly affordable there, as was a replacement tripod for the Virtual Boy. I also picked up a few more VB âgemsâ such as Virtual League Baseball, TeleroBoxer, Galactic Pinball, Vertical Force and Wario Land to increase my mammoth VB library to nine games (that is more than half of its complete library, seriously!). I tried a few of them out and was surprised at my lack of TeleroBoxer skills that I need some severe practice at. VB does have a fine pinball game though and I would like to set aside time to finish Wario Land one day because it is one of the few legit quality games on the platform. Suffice it to say, the good âol Virtual Boy will likely be my sole VR system for the forseeable future. 13) Pinball Gaming Love
Like last year, I played a healthy chunk of pinball games. This year it was primarily Zen Pinball 2 and I kept up with its final round of new tables and tried my best to attain each tableâs trophy/achievement. I probably put way too much time trying to get that pesky Rogue One trophy. I put in some time into Pinball Arcade and Hyperspace Pinball, but not nearly as much as last year. I really need to put more time into the former because I just got caught up acquiring its latest season of tables and have yet to try any of them out. It is a shame that unlike the Zen tables, purchasing Pinball Arcade tables on PS3 does not carry over to the PS4 version so I am stuck playing them on PS3. I did do the upgrade a few months ago from Pinball FX2/Zen Pinball 2 to Pinball FX3 and am still coming around to it. Zen thankfully allows my PS3 purchased tables to carry over into the PS4 version! I think I am finally getting use to PFX3âs new unlockable upgrades system, but there seems to be a bit too much optional mini-modes available in order to âmasterâ each table. I will give Zen props for making their latest two tables free in honor of the 10 year anniversary of the first Pinball FX. I imagine I will conform to its various new extras and features soon enough, but not as quickly as I thought. 12) Twin Cities Gaming â Part Two
Last year I mentioned how I went to the Twin Cities to visit a couple friends where we engaged in all sorts of gaming awesomeness, and I continued the trend again this year. I first visited my friend Tyler and while checking out the Mall of America we caught a glimpse of this VR Arcade/theme park there that had all kinds of ambitious sets rigged up. We did not test any out, but just surveyed the area to get a good idea of how to plan out a day there next time we return. We did stop in one of the other traditional arcades in the Mall of America however where I finally discovered in the wild one of the Mario Kart GP games that Namco develops. There have been a few iterations of these over the past decade and I believe the version we played was Mario Kart Arcade GP DX. The version we played had a sweet two-player setup that held its own with the latest home versions, and I was delighted to see it bring back some of the two-player co-op features not seen in the series since Double Dash. I made another trip to the awesome Up/Down Arcade with my friend Dick while I was in the Cities and I was thrilled to see they had just as many awesome 80s and 90s arcade units there as it had last year. We also checked out a pinball bar called Tilt Pinball Bar. It was much smaller compared to Up/Down, but still contained everything I wanted out of such an establishment with a good variety of around 25-30 tables from all eras. We spent a good couple hours there competing for high scores while enjoying a brew and I finally got a chance to play the authentic versions of tables I put countless hours into their digital versions in Pinball Arcade with tables like Champion Pub being a thrill to finally play in reality! 11) First Rule of Fight Club⊠I have neglected online multiplayer on Playstation since Sony started charging for it on PS4. A couple months ago I relented and picked up a three month card because of my friend Chris who I use to semi-regularly play online PS3 fighting games with. Since I activated the subscription we played on three out of four Saturday mornings and had some great sessions in a variety of fighting games. Neither of us are EVO-quality vets by any means, but we kind of have a vague idea of what we are doing out there and are both along the same skill level. We played a ton of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, Street Fighter V and Injustice 2. I dug all three games, and Chris and I talked a lot of friendly smack while we mashed away on buttons relentlessly. 10) Reviewing my first game since 2011âŠkind of
I adored the first two Syberia games that hit PC/Xbox in 2003/04. I loved their story, atmosphere, cast and writing. While its adventure-genre standard puzzles it featured had me referencing guides online, I did not mind because I had to see what was next for the affable heroine, Kate Walker. I somehow missed the announcements leading up to the third game and was surprised to see it on shelves one day early in the year and I immediately grabbed it without question. That turned out to be a mistake because Syberia 3 is a near-unplayable mess filled with countless glitches and bugs that were previously not part of the franchiseâs pedigree. I have no idea how this got the stamp of approval for release. I saw Syberia 3 went on to have more patches and updates after I finished it so hopefully it is not as much of a hot mess as it was when I played it during its first week of release. I wrote a lengthy post chronicling my troubles with the game on a forum I frequent online. Once I realized I rambled on for a quite a bit about the game that it nearly resembled a review, I tweaked a few spots in the original post and made a couple other minor addendums to cover most of the bases of the game. I then submitted it with the lowest score possible to my GameFAQs profile (I am not a fan of how they converted to its five hearts rating system). I have not done a video game review in several years since I switched to focus on reviewing movies on this blog. That said, if you want to see a more detailed account of my disappointment with Syberia 3, then click here to see my first video game review since 2011. 9) Beating my first Mega Man game at Extra Life!!! On my top gaming moments blog last year I recounted how Mega Man 2 became the first game in the series I put serious play time into by beating three stages in it during the annual 24-hour Extra Life charity drive I participate in every year. I beat a few more stages since then, but still had a few more to go and it felt fitting to finish the game off at the next yearâs Extra Life! That is exactly what I did, and boy did I feel like an idiot doing so with my lackluster Mega Man expertise. While I still enjoyed my time with the game, I had to exploit save-states for every few screens of progress. I had no idea there was a huge labyrinth of levels leading up to the final encounter with Dr. Wily, which included finishing off all the previous bosses again one more time. I was only anticipating spending another couple hours with the game when instead it took me about five to six hours to finish it off. I still loved every moment of it and want to at least finish off a couple more games in the series someday. I hear that Mega Man 3 is even better than Mega Man 2 so I should at least play that oneâŠ.right? 8) Off to the Races
Just like last year I played a ton of racing games off and on throughout the year. Like pinball games, starting off a gaming session with 30-60 minutes knocking off a few races of progress before I move onto something else is ideal for me. I played way too much Konami Krazy Racers on the GBA Virtual Console on WiiU. It is a fun little kart racer featuring a unique cast of side characters from various Konami franchises. I also played a ton of Fast Racing Neo on WiiU and loved its take on F-Zero/Wipeout. Before the Switch version of Mario Kart 8 launched earlier this year I got in a few more online sessions on the WiiU version since I imagined most of the player-base flocked to that version upon its release. I am still surprised at how well that version runs online with my wi-fi setup. Other racing games that dominated my time this year were The Crew. I am not really engaging in much of its online content and trying to romp through its story mode, but I do like its take on using the USA as an open world hub. The spiritual successor to Road Rash that is Road Redemption finally came out of Steam Early Access a few months ago and I enjoyed a couple loops through its career mode with my brother. TrackMania Turbo is a fun time-trial based racer oozing with style that has me itching for those perfect runs. JoyRide Turbo is an inferior racing game also with âTurboâ in its title. It is a port of the Kinect-racer on 360 that hit XBLA a year or two later with standard controller gameplay added, and it is ok, but eventually it wore out its welcome. It is not as terrible as Beach Buggy Racing on Xbox One, a budget kart racer for the platform with very loose controls and gets my nod as least enjoyable racing game I played in 2017. Finally, I have been playing a lot of the 360 version of Forza Horizon 2. I loved the first game and its festival/party atmosphere it introduced to the spinoff series and the same applies to the sequel. I am almost done with most of the races in the career mode and after that I can finally move on to the third Horizon which I hear nothing but amazing things. 7) One Game in One Day!
I have referenced here before how I am down with the genre of games known as âWalking Simulatorsâ with much love from me to prior hits in the genre like Oxenfree and Firewatch. Games in this genre cater towards me because they usually have powerful narratives that can be finished in a couple sittings. I wanted to finish one more game before the end of the year so on December 30th I started and finished another popular game in the genre that hit earlier in 2017, What Remains of Edith Finch in about four hours. The game did not disappoint as it focused on the last surviving member of a cursed family revisiting her childhood home and each through an interesting series of flashbacks she experiences each family memberâs demise. I enjoyed most of it and absolutely loved its atmosphere exploring the mysterious house filled with literally thousands of books. The big focus of the journey though is reliving those 10-12 flashbacks and they scale all over the place from enthralling, to vague, to underwhelming and head-scratchingly dull. I still very much enjoyed my experience with it, especially since it was one of those rare times where I can plow through a game in a single sitting, but I would rank it a notch or two under Oxenfree and Firewatch. 6) Pound-Town!! On last yearâs best of blog I dedicated an entry to my awesome couch co-op gaming nights with friends Derek, Brooke and Ryan, so I will continue that trend this year. We started off the year rotating in and out a lot of our usual favorites but sticking more and more to the social party games featured in Jackbox Party Pack. About halfway into the year another Jackbox-style game hit the PS4 that was a hit with our group called Thatâs You and it incorporated more unique ways of getting the smartphone in the mix in its games compared to the Jackbox use of the smartphone.
About halfway into the year however we started to play more and more board games. We got a few in the mix in 2016 but 2017 was the year board gaming took off for us. A couple board game/hobby shops opened up in town over the last year or two and it resulted in our group trying out tons of new board games. I must have tried out nearly a dozen tabletop games and some of my favorites were Five Minute Dungeon (a super quick card based version of DnD), YamSlam (think Yahtzee meets poker) and another game I forget the name of where you where a headband and put a card on it while your teammate gives clues to the answer like in the classic game show, $25,000 Pyramid. While we are on the theme of board games this entry I will give a shoutout to Matt and the few rounds of Othello we got in over recent years (new version out on Switch!). Another night Derek and I joined my brother and friends Mike and Justine for an epic night of the board game Zombicide. I have played that game before and do enjoy it, but that game makes rounds of Risk seem like a sprint and you need to dedicate at least several hours to finish a game. Luckily, Mike is a seasoned pro at the game and breezed through its elaborate setup. Somehow, someway we managed to finish a whole game in about five hours, and it was a blast. I feel bad for my brother because he was the only one in our group that did not survive the zombie horde that night. 5) More Love for the 3DS This is another themed entry I am carrying over from 2016. I continue to try and get in a couple hours of handheld device gaming a week on my 3DS. 2017 saw me finally finish Phoenix Wright: Spirits of Justice after a whopping 68 hours!! It easily surpasses Dual Destines as the superior 3DS installment of the franchise as it finally opens up Apolloâs background and it gets all the ace attorneys involved from the Wright Anything Agency and brings back fan favorite Maya back into the fray after a lengthy absence from the series. I am now all caught up on the latest games in the seriesâŠin America anyways as I hear Japan is getting spin-off exclusives I am envious of. The other 3DS game I put a ton of time into this year was the remaster of Dragon Quest VIII. It originally hit PS2 around 15 years ago, but this version makes some added benefits for on-the-go gaming like quicksaves and auto-combat which I greatly appreciate. I always liked the Dragon Quest series of RPGs for being simpler, easier to pick up RPGs compared to the average Final Fantasy, and I am digging its art style, score and whimsical narrative thus far after around 30 hours in.
One last game I finished on 3DS is Find Mii and that is a Street Pass Plaza game contained with the 3DS UI. It took forever to finish because to advance in it you need to earn coins via carrying the 3DS around with you in sleep mode to beat simple monsters in a straightforward dungeon layout. There are quite a few monsters to conquer though and it took me banking up many coins to hire countless temporary heroes to defeat in its many dungeon rooms and after nearly three years of off-and-on gradual progress I finally finished it. Huzzah! 2017 saw a far more advanced version of Find Mii released on the 3DS called Mii-Topia which I understand is more of a full-on RPG compared to the intentionally basic design of Find Mii. I think Mii-Topia released shortly after I finished Find Mii and I kind of impulse-bought while on my rush of finishing Find Mii so who knows when I will get to it. Speaking of the 3DS, my brother Joe and I went in together and got my nephew Carter a 2DS for Christmas. Joe got Carter into Pokemon at the beginning of the year by exposing him to the cartoon and the world of Pokemon cards. He is now a devout PokeKid! He never played any of the games though, so I we got him a 2DS and I loaded it up with Virtual Console rereleases of Pokemon Yellow, Pokemon Trading Card Game and Pokemon Puzzle League and I made sure to download and install a super-sweet Pikachu theme on the system for him too. When he opened it up on Christmas Eve he gave both us the biggest hugs!!! So worth it! 4) Kept You Waiting? Just like in 2016, I played a good amount of Metal Gear Solid. The first few months of the year I dedicated to trying to finish off Peace Walker. I say trying because I got the first ending to the game, but it seemed premature due to the gameplay style and sure enough after looking up online there was a true ending to unlock that involved beating many more boss fights in a specific fashion that is too particular to explain here in order to truly finish it. I spent way too much time going down this route before ultimately giving up and moving on. I still had a blast with the game and since it did not have a difficulty level setting I guess you can say I did âbeatâ it on its default difficulty level instead of setting it to âvery easyâ like I did in prior entries.
I needed a break from the franchise after that fiasco for a few months so it was not until the end of summer that I picked up and played through all of the prologue to Metal Gear Solid V that is called Ground Zeroes. It is like the introductory mission to MGS2 and MGS3 that is a couple hours long and sets up the rest of the game, but it was released nearly two years ahead of the main game. It picks up right after Peace Walker which is why I invested so much time in attempting to see that through. I loved how the new game looked on the current gen with stunning graphical effects that make the series stand out above all other AAA games, and its cutscene production is in a league of its own with a gorgeous set piece that sets up the proper full MGSV experience that came out in 2015, The Phantom Pain. A couple months later I finally started The Phantom Pain. The introductory stage is an experience I will never forget and is more like an hour and a half movie that introduces you to the core controls while Konami takes you on a visual effects smorgasbord with easily one of the best produced opening cinematics I have ever seen, and that is saying a lot not just for the franchise but for games in general. Even if you are not that familiar with MGS universe and lore, please click here and take the time to watch The Phantom Painâs opening hour play out to see a new level of production caliber that games have rarely achieved. That hour and a half or so of gameplay is what I finished off the Extra Life marathon with, and I was glad to rock a pair of surround sound gaming headphones to it because just as much care was put into the audio as in the visuals and it all combined for my eyes being glued to the screen the entire time. I have only had time to play about four or five hours more of it since, and I am glad I played Peace Walker because it looks like it is carrying over that gameâs âMother Baseâ central command hub that took a bit of adapting to and I will not be going in to that interface blind this time around. This is a huge departure from previous MGS games as the gameplay is changed up big time and now takes place primarily in an open world. I am still getting use to that part, but I am loving the little I have played so far as The Phantom Pain continues to open up with so many options available at Snakeâs disposal. I do miss the traditional codec calls, but I understand why Konami switched it up for this game. Speaking of Snake, I thought I would never accept Keifer Sutherland replacing David Hayter as Snakeâs voice but after that opening played out I did not second guess it again.
One last thing about Metal Gear! I referenced earlier how the crew at giantbomb.com are my go to crew for gaming based videos. They occasionally do full play-throughs of games with a second person on hand for commentary, and over a couple years from 2004-06 they went through almost all of the core Metal Gear games. Giant Bomb called the series âMetal Gear Scanlonâ because their video-guy Drew Scanlon was playing through the Metal Gear games for his first time while resident Metal Gear expert and published author, Dan Ryckert on hand to lend his Metal Gear expertise. During the course of 2017 I watched their playthroughs for the first three Metal Gear Solid entries. They were a riot to have on in the background and watch in chunks here and there. Here is a link to a few highlight packages from their sessions for those who are interested. 3) MmmmmâŠ.Fresh Meat I have an odd history with the Diablo series. I love hack ân slash RPG games, but I have never finished one in the premiere franchises of the genre from acclaimed developer Blizzard. I played a bit of the first chunk of the debut game right around its release on PC, but then my brother Joe started it up and he had more time to dedicate to it than I did so I wound up occasionally watching him play it from time to time instead. The exact same thing happened with the sequel and I saw Joe play that game nonstop for at least a few years. I played the opening couple of missions to the long awaited Diablo III shortly after its release in 2012 at a friendâs but held off picking it up hoping for a console release instead. I was thrilled when it hit consoleâs the next year and I picked it up on PS3 and Joe and another friend joined us for a few awesome couch co-op sessions of it and we got nearly halfway through the game until it became difficult to arrange nights for all three of us to meet up and continue and eventually the game fell into my gaming backlog abyss. Fast forward four years and Joe and I picked up our routine, bi-weekly Sunday morning gaming sessions that we use to do all the time until a few years ago. You want to know how long it takes to finish Diablo III and its expansion act when you only have time to commit about three-to-four a month to it? Turns out it takes roughly five months to finish it that way, but it was gratifying to finally cross finishing a Diablo game off my gamer bucket list. I am also mighty thankful that Blizzard made the normal difficulty a relative cakewalk for people like me who do not have ample time to set aside to master the game. We did not lose a single life until we got to the final boss, and even then we finished him off on our third try, and it felt so good! Joe-berg I apologize again for making you sit through all the story and dialogue sequences, I know you want to just keep on hack ân slashinâ, but you know I gots to absorb that Diablo-lore! 2) Is This Really A Thieveâs End? When I hosted my videogame podcast that ran from 2005-2013, Sonyâs top-of-the-line action/adventure Uncharted games would always rank high on my year-end game of the year lists. Hell, I even dug the Vita entry, Golden Abyss too! I got my PS4 towards the end of 2016 and it came bundled with the fourth game of the series. I wanted to play it right away, but did not want to nickel-and-dime my way through the game like I do for most games nowadays.
I held off on playing the latest version I heard so much praise for until I requested a week off from work in April this last year when I had a few other things going on in that timeframe I needed time off for. During that time I made sure to set aside nearly two hours a day to make decent headway in that game, and I am glad I did because Uncharted 4: A Thieveâs End is the longest game of the entire series and it took me nearly 20 hours to finish. It took me that long because I did what I always do every time I play through Uncharted and took my time to soak in its lush and beautiful environments while I explored off the beaten path for the gameâs trademark hidden treasures. Uncharted 4 ranks right up there with the second game as my two favorite games in the series. The core gunplay and stealth mechanics I had some issues with before got tweaked and are far more enjoyable this time around. This is the first time in the series I did not mind playing stealthy for a change in certain areas. The platforming is just as masterful as ever as I took in every climbing, rope-swinging, and rock-sliding path that was bestowed upon protagonist Nathan Drake. The vintage set piece chase/interactive cinematics are just as impressive as the past few entries as well. I loved the introduction of Nateâs brother Sam to the cast and he perfectly blended into the series. There was one twist with him later on in the narrative that did not get fully explained that kind of rubbed me the wrong way, but other than that the story lives up to the brandâs high standards. Definitely do no skip out on this entry in the series!
Later on in the year a spinoff Uncharted came out subtitled Lost Legacy. It made the bold move of not having Drake as the protagonist and instead casted Drakeâs partner-in-crime Chloe from Uncharted 2 & 3 and antagonist Nadine from Uncharted 4 as the two stars. Playing with these two and an open-ended stage that took up a major part of the second act of Lost Legacy combined to significantly change up the core Uncharted gameplay. I approached parts of this game differently than previous installments while still experiencing the aforementioned top-of-class production values from the series. While I hope it is not the final Uncharted game in the series, I hope the series goes on a mini-hiatus for the time being after six awesome entries within 11 years. 1) Zelda + Elder Scrolls = GOTY The hype leading up to the latest Legend of Zelda game in the series that hit in 2017, Breath of the Wild was impossible to avoid. Nintendo finally changing up the core formula of a console based Zelda for the first time since Ocarina of Time and going to an open-world format was something I had to be there day one for. I still recall playing the first five hours of Breath of the Wild and being fully immersed with its its new levels of open-ended gameplay previously unseen in the series. I instantly fell in love with its world, and for its first several hours of gameplay I felt I was playing something truly special. The only times I felt this way before about a game were for Grand Theft Auto III, the first Halo and the first Uncharted. That is elite company to reside with.
Minus a couple short breaks to focus on other games, I have been consistently playing Breath of the Wild since its release and have invested nearly 100 hours into it. Despite that I have yet to finish it and have only vanquished two divine beasts so far because I love losing myself exploring its world. I rarely make use of fast travel points and I never use horses for fear or running past and missing out on hidden areas/secrets in the game. It took me several hours over many attempts to finish the mystical Eventide Island and I did not mind its grueling challenge to figure out how to overcome the unique predicament that island starts Link off in. I remember the thrill of finishing off my first ancient machine and defeating the formidable foes that are the Lynels. I did not mind the weapons breaking frequently since it inspired me to mix up my weaponry and try out weapons I would not have otherwise and there are always a constant flux of weapons available. Somehow, someway, Breath of the Wild is the first game to get me into crafting, something I detested in games prior. That jingle it plays when you make a super zesty dish with bonus attributes is an awesome feeling. I am playing this on the WiiU and my only gripe is that it did not have the option to use the gamepad for inventory management. I guess the rain was a minor hindrance too since it prevents climbing, but those minor two gripes aside did not bother me to invest all this time into it throughout the year, and probably just as much time going into 2018 too. This is easily the best time I have had with any Zelda game ever. Until Next YearâŠ. Phew, thank you for sticking with me throughout this novel of an entry. This was quite the adventure to write, and I give big ups to you if you got through this in its entirety! See you next year for my top 2018 gaming experiences! As a little bonus, if you are not tired yet of clicking through all the supplemental YouTube videos linked above, here is one more that always manages to crack me up when I need to get myself out of a funk, so please click away and enjoy!

Roman numeral tattoo - meaning, conversion, ideas
Once widely used in Europe and in parts of Africa and Asia, Roman numerals seem to have lost their popularity today.
And yet, they are part of these inherited aspects of Greco-Roman culture that are not entirely forgotten at present. They remain notably known and used in certain fields of art, such as cinema and tattoos. In the first area, they serve to designate episodes of sagas, such as, for example, episodes of Star Wars . Another job perhaps less well known in the field of cinema: Roman numerals are widely used to indicate the year of production of the films. As for the field of tattoos, here the Roman numerals can express diverse and varied ideas. In this article we make a
zoom on the Roman numeral tattoo and on its possible meanings.
You will also find useful information on how to convert Arabic numerals into Roman numerals without baffles and long, boring calculations.
Tattoo Roman numeral â meaning
Roman tattoo meaning side, it is not surprising to learn that the most common function remains that of the expression of dates and years. The fact that Roman culture is part of our cultural and historical heritage plays an important role for the development of this tattoo meaning. It is this aspect that helps us to associate the figures of the Romans with something old, which has occurred in the past.
For these reasons, the Roman numeral tattoo is today used to indicate dates and years that have marked the life of the wearer. It can be a year of birth or marriage or the date of another important event in our life âŠ
So, tattoos of this kind are also a way to commemorate the first meeting with his darling or with his best friend. So thatâs a nice idea for wedding, romantic or friendship tattoo!
Tattoo location ideas Roman numeral
The Roman numerals are based on a rather simple system of calculation and some Latin alphabet symbols that are still used today in many countries around the world. France, Belgium and Canada are no exception! In short, this type of tattoo brings a lot to a message composed of a few letters. So, this kind of tattoo does not take much space; we can therefore consider wearing it everywhere on his body.
The choice of a location for a Roman numeral tattoo will therefore depend essentially on the size of the desired tattoo. Do you want a discreet little tattoo? Try an ankle tattoo, handle or finger! The latter would also be a good idea for couples. Want a tatto Roman numeral that gets noticed? Bet on a tattoo arm, leg or shoulder.
In any case, you can play with various fonts and colors. It is also possible to incorporate different patterns to your Roman numeral tattoo. Thus, dots or other geometric patterns could be used to separate the day, month and year of your tattoo.
Good to know: the tattoo Roman numerals also exists in version ephemeral tattoo . Good news for those who would like to experiment with such a motif before engraving it on their skin forever!
What does he need to know to invent his Roman numeral tattoo?
To invent his personalized Roman numeral tattoo, it is necessary to know the system used by the ancient Romans to note the numbers. This system is not very complex. Below, we reveal everything you need to know about it!
The Roman numeral notation system is based on the Latin alphabet that is still used today in French, Spanish and English speaking countries. This is our everyday alphabet.
To know how to read and write these figures, it is sufficient to know which Latin letters correspond to the Arabic numerals which are those commonly used today. Here are the essential correspondences to know:
For the numbers from 1 to 9: 1 = I; 2 = II; 3 = III; 4 = IV or IIII; 5 = V; 6 = VI; 7 = VII; 8 = VIII; 9 = IX;
The tens are noted: 10 = X; 20 = XX; 30 = XXX; 40 = XL; 50 = L; 60 = LX; 70 = LXX; 80 = LXXX; 90 = XC;
For the hundreds: 100 = C; 200 = CC; 300 = CCC; 400 = CD; 500 = D; 600 = DC; 700 = DCC; 800 = DCCC; 900 = CM;
Thousands are written: 1000 = M; 2000 = MM; 3000 = MMM etc.
For further âŠ
Want to go further and transpose a date or an exact figure in Roman numerals? No problem ! For this, one must know the very operation of the notation of the Romans. Rest assured, this is not difficult. On the contrary, the Romans did everything to simplify their lives in this respect!
Their scoring system was based solely on addition and subtraction. For this reason, it is also called an additive system. This means that there are hook numbers that are used to record all digits, using two simple methods: addition and subtraction. The essential numbers are I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500). Knowing these numbers, we can note and decipher all the others.
To do this, it must be remembered that higher value numbers are noted using addition; conversely, those with a minor value are noted using subtraction. In practice, this is illustrated by the following examples:
6 is denoted by the addition 5 + 1, ie V + I = VI (6); likewise, 11 is denoted by the addition 10 + 1, ie X + I = XI (11);
4 is denoted by the subtraction 1 â 5, ie I â V = IV (4), likewise 9 is denoted by the subtraction 1 â 10, ie I â X = IX (9).
You will understand, with a little practice, we can easily write any number using the system of Romans!
Online converters to customize your tattoo Roman numerals
Otherwise, there is now an even simpler way of converting Arabic numerals into Roman numerals for tattooing. For that, it would be enough to visit an online converter, like the one available on this page .
Thanks to this kind of free tools, we can convert Arabic numerals in one click. It should, quite simply, enter the number in the indicated field and the result will be immediately displayed next. Great, is not it?

How to get started with real estate investing
Todays article is from Chad Carson, who writes about real estate investing (and other money matters) at Coach Carson. Ive always been intrigued by real estate investing but overwhelmed by how much info available. I asked Chad if hed be willing to write an article that would help me (and other GRS readers) understand the basics of real estate investing. This is the result. I got started in real estate investing right after college. Because a young adult can basically sleep in a car if he has to (my 1998 Toyota Camry with cloth seats was comfortable), I had little to lose by launching a business. Unfortunately, as a Biology major, I also knew very little about business or real estate. But I did know how to hustle and to learn. That helped. Slowly, I learned to find good deals and to resell them for a small markup of profit (a.k.a. wholesaling). I also learned to buy, fix, and flip houses for a bigger profit (a.k.a. retailing). After a few years, my business partner and I began keeping some rental properties because we knew that was the path to generating regular, passive income. While my early business might sound like an exciting HGTV house-flipping show, its not for everyone. I experienced radical ups and downs of cash flow, and there were many unpredictable outcomes. I learned a lot being a full-time investor, but there are actually easier ways to get started. Most investors I know started with a full-time job. They became valuable at their job, earned good money, lived frugally, and started boosting their saving rate. With their extra savings, they began buying rental properties on the side. Im not saying you shouldnt begin as a real estate entrepreneur like I did youll know if youre called to make that leap but if you currently have a non-real estate job and youre saving money, youre already going down the easiest path. The next step is to learn how to invest that money profitably and safely. I personally think real estate investing is one of the best ways to do that. Ill show you why thats the case in the next section.
Why Real Estate Investing? Because Its Ideal! Ive yet to find a better way to describe the benefits of real estate than this. All you need to remember is the acronym I.D.E.A.L: Income. The biggest benefit of real estate is rental income. Even the worst rentals I find produce more income than a portfolio of other assets like stocks or bonds. For example, I often see unleveraged (no debt) returns of 5-10% from rental income. And with reasonable leverage, its possible to see these returns jump to 10-15% or higher. The dividend rate of the S&P 500, on the other hand, is only 1.99% as of 1/24/17. And the yield on a broad basket of US bonds as of the same date was only 2.41%.Depreciation. Our government requires rental owners to spread out the cost of an asset over multiple years (27.5 years for residential real estate). This produces something called a yearly depreciation expense that can shelter or protect your income from taxes and reduce your tax bill. (For more about this, check my article The Incredible Tax Benefits of Real Estate Investing over at Mad Fientist.)Equity. If you borrow money to buy a rental property, your tenant basically pays off your mortgage for you with their monthly rent. Trust me: Having somebody else pay your mortgage is a beautiful thing! Like a forced savings account, your equity in the property gets bigger and bigger over time.Appreciation. Over the long run, real estate has gone up in value about the same rate as inflation, roughly three to four percent a year. Combined with the three benefits above, appreciation can produce a very solid long-term return. But this passive style of inflation is not the whole story. Active appreciation is even more profitable. You get active appreciation when you force the value higher by doing something to the property, like with a house remodel or changing the zoning.Leverage. Debt leverage is readily available to buy real estate. This means your $100,000 of savings can buy five properties at $20,000 down instead of just one property for $100,000. Interest on this debt is deductible, so you also save on your taxes. (While this can be helpful, keep in mind that leverage also magnifies your losses if things go bad.) These IDEAL benefits are core reasons to invest in real estate. But as a Get Rich Slowly reader, I think youll appreciate another core real estate investing benefit: control! Controlling Your Financial Destiny
I love J.D.s message here at Get Rich Slowly: You are the boss of you! You can apply this lesson to so many parts of life, but it especially applies to your finances. Real estate investing fits very well with the GRS philosophy. Why? Because real estate gives you much more control than other more traditional investments. Im also a fan of low-cost index fund investing, for example, but do you have an impact on the returns of your stock portfolio? Not really. The 3500+ managers of the companies owned by the VTI total stock market index fund do impact your returns, but not you personally. You simply control when you buy, how much you buy, and when you sell. But with a rental duplex, for example, your decisions directly affect its profitability (for better or worse!). You can buy in certain neighborhoods and ignore others. You can negotiate with your bank, with the seller, and with your vendors to get better prices. You can choose the property manager and the types of tenants who will ultimately produce the returns for your investment. If this prospect of control excites you, then keep reading. But if your palms are clammy at the idea of hands-on investments, just focus on a different vehicle. Thats okay. There are options for everyone in this big investing universe! To make things manageable, were going to break things down a little. As a baby, you learned to walk by taking tiny steps. You also fell down a lot, but with a diaper four inches from the ground, whats the harm?! Well, youre no longer a baby. Financially you do have a lot to lose. Your family, your hard-earned savings, your plans for financial independence, and your pride would all suffer if you made bad investments. I get that. And thats why we still need to take safe, baby steps. Therell be plenty of time to run and grow faster once youre more confident. But in the beginning, just strive to move forward steadily. The seven baby steps below provide a simple path to follow. Ive taken each of these steps personally. You can use them as a blueprint to help you move forward with your own real estate investments. Step 1: Create Financial Goals Real estate is simply a financial vehicle. Before you begin to buy real estate, you have to have a clear picture financially where the vehicle will take you. If you havent done it already, read J.D.s Financial Independence in Plain English. Youll learn that a solid financial independence goal is to achieve a net worth equal to your current annual expenses multiplied by 25. In other words, if you spend about $50,000 per year, your goal should be to achieve a net worth of around $1,250,000. With this level of wealth, you could likely withdraw 4% of your net worth each year without completely depleting your money. While these assumptions are typically made for traditional portfolios of stocks and bonds, real estate works much the same. In fact, its much simpler. Lets say once again you spend about $50,000 per year. And lets assume you can produce a cash-on-cash return of 6% with your real estate investments. (This return or better is achievable once you get going.) This would mean you need a net worth of $833,000 ($50,000 .06) to achieve financial independence. (For more details, check out my article How Many Rental Properties Do You Need to Retire.) In case you didnt notice, real estates income producing ability allows you to become financially independent with a much smaller net worth than alternative investments. In other words, you get to financial independence sooner! Just another benefit of real estate investing! Now lets pick a real estate investing strategy and niche.
Step 2: Focus on a Real Estate Investing Strategy and Niche Real estate isnt a single method of investing. Ive found at least 35 different niches you could specialize in, and you could apply a variety of strategies to each of those niches. A niche is just a small segment of the larger real estate market. This could be a particular neighborhood, a certain kind of property (single family, duplex, commercial building), or a certain customer (like vacation rental tenants). A strategy is a method of making money. In very basic terms, real estate strategies fall under two big umbrellas: Flipping properties (buying and quickly selling).Holding for rental income and growth. Within each of these larger strategies, youll find a number of sub-strategies. Ill give you my favorites below. Many brand-new investors get overwhelmed because there are so many choices. This leads to analysis paralysis or ineffectiveness as they jump from one niche to another. To help you avoid this, Ill recommend a few of my favorite beginner combinations of strategies and niches within real estate investing. The Live-In House Flip My friends and bloggers at 1500 Days to Freedom built a large part of their wealth ($1.6 million +) using a simple real estate method. Its called the Live-in House Flip. [J.D.s note: I too am a fan of the folks at 1500 Days. Theyre funny and informative.] Just like it sounds, this strategy involves flipping a house. But unlike most flips, you live in the house for at least two years. Why live in the house? Because this allows you to sell the house tax-free. This is one of the most profitable sections of the U.S. tax code! (In the U.S., when you sell your primary residence, up to $250,000 of capital gains for an individual or $500,000 for a couple can be excluded from your income.) No, its not always fun to live with construction dust. But what if you could use this strategy for a short period of your life, like 6-10 years? You could own your home free and clear or jumpstart your wealth building. And then you could move on with the rest of your life. House Hacking I love house hacking! One of my first residences Ive had a lot! was a four-plex. I lived in one unit and rented out the other three units. My mortgage payment including taxes and insurance was $1100 per month. My rent from the other three units was $1200. I was basically living for free! If you dont want to live in a small multi-unit building, you could also rent out a basement or garage apartment. I have a friend who rents his basement part-time using AirBnB and pays his entire homes mortgage. House hacking is also a great way to transition into non-owner occupied rental properties. While living in the property, you can obtain an owner occupied mortgage. These mortgages have the best rates and terms, and they are the easiest to get. Then after living in the building for a couple of years, you can decide to move on to a new residence. But the old property can be kept as a long-term rental that cash flows well. If youre looking for a low cost of housing and your first rental property, its hard to beat this method. Rental Debt Snowball Youre probably familiar with the debt snowball, which is a great way to repay your debts one-by-one. The speed of your debt payoff snowballs because the cash flow gets bigger and bigger as each debt gets paid. This cash flow is then used to pay off the next debt even faster. You can also do a debt snowball with rental properties. Its one of the most predictable, satisfying ways to achieve financial independence with real estate investing. Heres how it works in brief: Buy the number of rental properties you need to achieve financial independence. (Remember, we covered that calculation in step one above.)Use the excess cash flow from all rentals (and any extra savings) to pay off one mortgage at a time.Repeat the process for each mortgage until you own all of the homes free and clear.Enjoy the income and equity from your free-and-clear properties to do what matters in your life. Using this method, its possible to own your properties free and clear of debt in under thirteen years. (I wrote a detailed rental snowball example with numbers in case youre interested.) Now that you understand the big picture, lets look at what makes a good real estate deal. [embedded content] Step 3: Understand the Basics of Good Real Estate Deals Good real estate deals are one part quantitative analysis (i.e. the numbers) and one part qualitative analysis (i.e. intangibles that make properties desirable). To buy good real estate deals that will make a profit and help you achieve financial independence, you need to understand both. Quantitative Analysis of Real Estate I can summarize financial analysis for rental properties with five key metrics: Net Operating Income. Your net operating income (NOI) is the rent left over after paying all of your property expenses, including taxes, insurance, property management, maintenance and reserves for vacancy and future capital expenses (roofs, HVAC systems, etc). Importantly, this metric does not include any mortgage expenses.Cap Rate. You know how folks use the price-to-earnings ratio (or P/E ratio) to evaluate stock prices? Well, the cap rate is a similar tool for evaluating home prices. The cap rate which is short for capitalization rate describes the relationship between the net operating income (or NOI) and the price of the real estate. Imagine, for example, a rental that produces $10,000 per year in NOI and can be purchased for $100,000. This hypothetical property would have a 10% cap rate. This metric ignores any debt used to buy the property and focuses only on the income and price. So, the formula is this: Cap Rate = NOI/Price.Net Income After Taxes. Net income after taxes is derived from a formula that builds upon the NOI. The key difference is that here you also deduct mortgage payments (if any) and tax liabilities. This is the money youll actually get to keep in your bank account, which I think we can all agree is a very important thing!Cash-on-Cash Return (ConC). Like a cap rate, your cash-on-cash return describes your return on investment. But the ConC rate usually assumes you have leverage and describes the cash return on your down payment. Imagine you purchase a property with a $20,000 down payment, for instance. If this property produces a $2000 yearly net income after taxes, then youd be earning a 10% cash-on-cash return. The formula is this: Cash-on-Cash Return = Net Income After Taxes/Cash Invested.Price Discount. The final metric is straight-forward. How far below the full price did you pay? Unlike stocks, real estate is an illiquid market. This means there are opportunities if you work hard to buy a place anywhere from 10% to 30% (or more) below full value. There are definitely many other ways to financially analyze a real estate deal. But if you understand these five core metrics, youll have the basics tools you need to buy a good deal. Qualitative Analysis of Real Estate Real estate is best viewed as a product. A lot of times, investors get caught up in the numbers, as if real estate is only a numbers game. But its not. In real life, people make emotional decisions to buy or rent. Qualitative analysis is all about understanding the factors that make any particular property more or less desirable. Luckily, youve lived in real estate! So, when you buy residential real estate investments, you already understand some of the important factors that matter the most to renters and buyers. But to jog your memory, here is a list of things to consider that affect the desirability of a property: SafetyWalkability or accessibility of public transit (especially in urban areas)Good school districts (especially in suburban areas)Population growth in the region increasing (good) or decreasing (bad)Job and wage growth in the region increasing (good) or decreasing (bad)Low-traffic streetsOutdoor living features (yard, patios, gardens, etc)Attractive interior finishes (this varies from market to market, but its important)Storage space (garages, storage lockers, etc)Quality construction and low maintenance materials (floors, exterior surfaces, etc)Interior layout (avoid weird wall locations, walking through bedrooms to get to bedrooms, etc)Avoid obnoxious neighbors, dogs, smells, large power lines, noises you cant control these things.Avoid steep lots or properties below the grade of the road. Water flowing towards your foundation is a difficult problem. Real estate is very local. So, my list may not always apply to your market. But the main point is to study and learn the important factors in the area where you want to invest. You can do this best by becoming a renter or buyer yourself. Shop around. And then try to buy properties that meet both your quantitative and qualitative criteria. Step 4: Build a Team Real estate is a team sport. If you like to manage all of your investments from a computer and never talk to people, this may be negative. But you dont have to be an extrovert or an amazing communicator to be the leader of your team. You just need to have a clear idea of what you want and then pay good people to help you. Heres a list of some of the key team members youll need to buy, finance, rent, and sell real estate investments: Real estate agent (for purchases and sales)Real estate attorney (for contracts, LLC creation, and for closings in some states)Certified Public Accountant (C.P.A.)Mortgage lenderPersonal banker (for your business bank accounts and lines of credit)Property manager (unless you are self-managing)Property inspector (during purchase due diligence)Repair contractorsHVAC technicianPlumberElectricianPest controlLawn careHandymanReferral sources for new dealsNetworking and mentorship with other local investors That might seem like a large list, but dont let it intimidate you. You dont have to build this team overnight. And you can share a lot of the team members with other investors as you network at local REIA groups or online at places like the Bigger Pockets forums. [embedded content] Step 5: Create a Financing Plan Real estate is closely tied to financing. Even in inexpensive markets, the price of an investment can be hundreds of thousands of dollars. So, unless you already have a big pile of cash to invest, youll need to create a financing plan and this needs to be done before you go out and start shopping for investment properties. Here are a few things to figure out with your personal financing plan: The source (mortgage lender, local bank, private loan, line of credit)The terms:interest rateupfront costs (fees, points, closing costs, etc)the length of the loanfully amortizing or an early balloon payment.down payment requirementLoan amount available As a general rule, I like my financing to have a low rate of interest, long length (30 years), and no balloons. When I started, I got most of my financing from non-bank, creative sources like private money, self-directed IRA loans, and seller-financing. (I shared my five favorite non-bank financing sources in an article at Bigger Pockets.) But over time Ive used all sorts of financing, including traditional mortgage loans and commercial financing. Youll need to match your financing to your strengths. If you have great credit, solid W-2 income, and a down payment, then traditional financing may be the best route in the beginning. The rates are typically low and the terms are very attractive. But if youre self-employed, newly employed, or any form of entrepreneur (like I was), then you may also want to look at alternative financing sources like I did. As Ill explain in the next section, it also wont hurt to have multiple sources of money. Traditional financing has great terms but it can be very slow to close. Alternative financing may have less attractive terms but give you quicker access to cash for good deals. Step 6: Create a Plan to Find Deals The question I get most often is, How do I find good real estate deals? Especially in hotter markets, it seems like all of the good deals get snatched up quickly. This was the skill that I learned at the very beginning of my real estate career. I didnt know much else, but I recognized that finding good deals was like a bottleneck for all of the other parts of the business. Here are some of the key things I learned: Recognize good deals. Begin by understanding what a good deal looks like. (See step three in this article.) You wont find good deals if you dont know what youre looking for.Prepare your financing (or cash). Get your financing prepared before you hunt for deals (step five above). Even better, if you have access to a source of liquid funds instead of just a traditional loan, youll improve your chances of buying good deals because you can move faster. This might be a line of credit, cash in the bank, a private loan, or a hard money loan. You can refinance with permanent financing later.Build a referral network. You want everyone you know to be looking for deals. You only have two eyes and 24 hours in a day. But if twenty people you know are looking for signs of good deals, youre much more likely to stumble upon them. Begin by printing and passing business cards telling people what you do and what youre looking for. If youre hardcore like I was, you might even put signs on your car! I bought one house per year for many years from this one source alone.Build market systems. Your time is limited. You need to build systems to leverage marketing, such as direct mail, websites, Realtor MLS searches, and more. (You can check out my podcast interview on BiggerPockets for seven ways to find incredible real estate deals. I talk about direct mail and other favorite ways to generate leads.)Hustle. Nothing replaces your personal commitment and desire to hustle. This is the great equalizer. When I started, I knew very little. Other investors had financial and knowledge advantages over me. But I was proud that few people could out-hustle me. If you want to find good deals, youll need a similar commitment. Keep in mind that finding deals is a lot like a treasure hunt. You have to turn over many, many stones before you find a gem. If youre impatient and want quick results after looking at five properties, youre not likely to succeed early on. When I was a beginner, I was told Id need to look at 100 properties before Id find a deal. This was like paying my dues. I still think its good advice today. There is much more to learn in this area of real estate. But these tips should help you get started. Step 7: Take Massive Action In life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know. Anthony Robbins, Awaken The Giant Within So far in this article, Ive shared a lot of knowledge. Weve gone from the big picture and theory of real estate down to the nitty-gritty of deal analysis and finding good properties to buy. But this final step is less about what you know and more about what you do. Ultimately, success in real estate investing or anything else comes down to personal commitment, organization, and self-discipline. I often tell people that starting anything new, including real estate, is a game of momentum. Its like youre pushing a huge boulder down a hill. That boulder wont budge without a lot of initial effort. But once you take massive action to get it moving, the rock will roll from its own momentum. The key questions for you then are: Are you really committed to real estate investing? If its just whim, Id recommend not wasting your effort. Itll likely just lead to frustration for you and others. Are you organized with your projects and your time? Im sure you have job, family, and other commitments already. Can you carve out 10-20 hours per week early on to push the boulder downhill, to build momentum? If not, perhaps you should wait until a time when you can.Are you willing to stick to this? Do you have enough self-discipline to keep going when its less fun, when the results dont come easily, and when youre tired? Youll hit a wall, just like everyone else before you. What will you do when the wall comes? The good news is that taking massive action can be a lot of fun! If youve made it this far (thank you for sticking with me!), youve proven youre interested in real estate investing. Make a game out of learning and starting this new venture. Dont take yourself too seriously when things go wrong. And celebrate when things go well. In the end, what I love about real estate and all of personal finance is the personal growth you experience while you also build wealth. Its a fun combination!

Writers Workout â Two Tools That Force You To Write Concisely â Blogcentric #87
Writers Workout â Challenge The Enemies Of Simplicity On Your Blog
We know jargon and buzzwords are a turn off for our readers but could cluttering your posts with these words be bad for your writing too?
Weâre looking at simplicity in this the second in our series on flexing your writing muscles.
Learning The Art Of Blogging Simplicity
http://ift.tt/2v2DZ96
This week is week 2 of the series on flexing your writing muscles. Last week I challenged you to use Morning Pages. How have you gotten on?
Iâve gone from being a sceptic to an advocate. At first I thought it was just some hippy way of relieving anxiety but Iâve begun to see value beyond that.
Iâm using it to:
Release anxiety (well yes it does work for that too)
Plan my day
Remember the good things from the previous day
Plan out content ideas
Write faster without self-editing during work
An interesting side effect is that itâs banished a lot of procrastination. Because Iâve got my thoughts out and straight Iâm less likely to tackle anything but what Iâm supposed to.
The downside is that it takes 1/2 an hour a day and 1/2 an hour out of a working day can hurt small business owners like me.
Some members of the Small Business Bloggers Facebook group joined the challenge too. Itâs interesting to see how they are using it differently. One person is documenting childhood memories, another found it a useful way to write down her anxieties. One long-term user of pages found it sometimes works as therapy and sometimes works as a way to capture inspiration.
If youâd like to share your experiences join the group: Â http://ift.tt/2vm8ZmX.
Failing at simplicity
Todayâs challenge is about simplicity. Simplicity in writing makes your content more accessible and is a gift to time starved readers.
Before I get into that lets look at how we fail at it:
Back in 1990 a woman named Elizabeth Newton conducted an experiment which you could easily replicate at home.
The âTappers and Listenersâ test split participants into two groups.
Tappers would be asked to tap out a well-known tune (Happy Birthday To You or the like) on a table. The listeners were asked to identify the tune.
Tappers were asked in advance what percentage of listeners they thought would guess what tune they were tapping. Their guess was 50%.
At the end of the experiment the actual percentage who guessed correctly was just 2.5%
Why was this?
According to Chip & Dan Heath who reported on the study for the Harvard Review (and their book Made To Stick):
âWhen a tapper taps, it is impossible for her to avoid hearing the tune playing along to her taps. Meanwhile, all the listener can hear is a kind of bizarre Morse code. Yet the tappers were flabbergasted by how hard the listeners had to work to pick up the tune.
The problem is that once we know somethingâsay, the melody of a songâwe find it hard to imagine not knowing it. Our knowledge has âcursedâ us. We have difficulty sharing it with others, because we canât readily re-create their state of mind.â
Source: Harvard Review
When we know a topic and write about it frequently itâs easy to slip into the Tapper mindset. Because we know something we make the assumption that others do too. The use of Jargon and Buzzwords are typical Tapper mistakes.
Thatâs why this weekâs challenge is about simplicity. Iâll get onto the specifics of the challenge shortly but first lets look at the benefits and enemies of simplicity.
1. Itâs accessible to your audience
Sometimes Iâll sit down to read a challenging book but thatâs a decision. I know it will take time and I make time for it. If I was reading a blog post written in the style of James Joyce Iâd surely give up before the end of the first sentence.
As business bloggers, we need to use language that keeps the reader interested. This doesnât mean dumbing down it just means clarity. Our readers will grasp our concepts and understand our message quickly if we write with simplicity in mind.
Simplicity is important in all writing but more so on the internet. Web readers scan text you need to ensure that wherever their eyes rest there is something concise and easy to read.
2. It forces you to be concise
Have you ever met someone who has tried to explain their business to you, has taken a long time to do it and when they finished youâve been none the wiser? Not only has this happened to me but Iâm pretty sure it was me at one stage in my career.
When we strip away the jargon and long phrases itâs easier to understand what weâre trying to communicate. Oddly composing simple wording can take longer but the message will always be stronger as a result.
3. Avoid being condescending and stuffy
Yes, weâre experts in our field but if we add too many flowery words, jargon or buzzwords to our text that arenât common in our audiences vocabulary it can look like weâre looking down on our readers. No one wants to do business with someone who they find patronising, you need to avoid this at all costs.
Jargon and Buzzwords, the enemies of simplicity
âaction itâ âmove it forwardâ
Just two terms I used and cringed at in the last episode of this podcast. How do we come up with and why do we use these terrible buzzwords?
Itâs not just buzzwords that are the problem. Jargon gets in the way too. Jargon turns us into Tappers.
For example. At a recent training event, a member of the audience raised their hand and asked me what I meant by âcurated contentâ.
Iâd been talking away unaware that some of the language I was using wasnât accessible to my audience. If the participant hadnât raised their hand my use of jargon would have affected their learning. Instead of absorbing the lesson they would have been distracted trying to fathom what I meant.
Itâs the same when weâre writing. When someone reads a word they donât understand they have two options.
They can ignore it and read on (perhaps not fully understanding the next paragraph).
They can give up. We donâtâ want our readers to give up.
We have to ensure we banish the buzzwords and jargon. How?
George Orwellâs rules of simplicity
Gerorge Orwell was an advocate of simplicity. In his essay âPolitics In The English Languageâ he outlines his rules:
(i) Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
(ii) Never use a long word where a short one will do.
(iii) If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
(iv) Never use the passive where you can use the active.
(v) Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.
(vi) Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.
I have no clue what number 5 means but the rest or the rules make a good set of guidelines to follow
Simple isnât easy
This all sounds good, but being simple isnât necessarily easy. We fall into bad habits over time and itâs hard to break them.
To help Iâve got a two-part challenge for you
Start by writing a blog post or text of at least 300 words long. Try and avoid jargon, buzzwords and complex words.
Part 1-Top Ten Hundred Words
I discovered this tool via Ann Handly. âThe Up Goer Five Text Editorâ challenges you to write a piece of text using only the top 1000 most commonly used words in the English language.
Itâs not as easy as it looks. Iâm not going to lie, itâs nearly impossible.
I found it much easier to write type straight into the box than cutting and pasting my original text. This way I could see if I was making errors as I wrote instead of trying to fix it after. It will force you to think harder about your writing.
So your first step is to either write your post straight into the text editor or cut, paste and edit what youâve already written. You probably wonât get a perfect score, real names and specific industry terms will always fall outside the 1000 words.
Once youâve simplified your language as much as you can itâs on to part 2.
Part 2 â Hemingway App
I mentioned George Orwell earlier but another writer famous for his simplicity is Ernest Hemingway. So much so that there is an editing tool named after him.
Hemingway App is designed to help you write simply, just like Hemingway. It also follows some of the principles Orwell outlined.
Cut and paste your text (or type it straight in) to Hemingway and it will highlight problematic sections. It will tell you if your sentences are hard to read, if you are using the passive voice too frequently, if you are using too many adverbs and if your phrases are too complex.
I use this tool a lot and after a while, I find that I donât need to use it anymore. The style sinks in and Iâm automatically writing in a clearer manner.
Step two of the challenge is to take your post, simplified with ten hundred words and edit it in Hemingway. Look at your original text. Is the new version better? Easier to digest?
Let me know how you get on with the challenge. You can join the Facebook group to and chat about the tools and how they helped (or didnât help).
