Oh, to be in England… were that Umph were there
… Plunger aren’t usually ones to run the Old Country down, but someone seriously needs to do something about the total lack of Umphrey’s back in Blighty. When they travelled over to play the Brooklyn Bowl (Greenwich) almost no-one could be bothered to drag their lazy arses Sarf Of The River to catch them except for sixty or so hardy US expats and Plunger*.
When you mention their name to (almost) anyone at home all you get is a non-plussed glazed-eye stare, like someone’s flicked the off switch at the back of their head. Yet in Asheville (with a population half that of Kensington and Chelsea) every coffee-shop barista, diner waitress and bartender at least knows who Umph are, and were more than likely at the same show you saw the night before. Of course, the cold, dead hand of Punk still has the British music scene at large clutched in its attitude-over-ability, energy-over-talent vice-like grasp but that doesn’t explain the almost total lack of traction even amongst the more discerning few. Maybe without the Pioneer Spirit your average Brit can’t handle the blithe disregard for genre/style/pigeonhole/whatever the band display (usually several times over within the same song)?
Certainly the first night at The US Cellular Center saw them mixing choppy dance grooves with soaring stadium rock in Draconian, melodic Floydish prog and West Coast slickness in Cemetery Walk, and anthemic southern noodling with crisp fusion stop/starts and unison playing in the excellent Fussy Dutchman, while the hip-hop menace-meets-lush trance of Push The Pig even featured a mid-way classical piano outing (Claude Debussy’s Pour Le Piano, if you’re interested). Plunger could go on listing the Crackerjack mix of genres through the whole two nights, but you get the picture… Suffice to say we were jigging about in an embarrassing manner with the best of them through a very dancey first night, with some particular faves in the gutsy hard rocker Go To Hell, and the epic (even when you aren’t entirely sure of the words) singalong of Hajimemashite and the discotastic Triple Wide (well, discotastic with added Ozzy Osbourne and Zep teases).
The second night did the impossible and went one better, with a first set including the good-time Caribbean-acid-skank (it’s a thing, we’ve decided) of Partyin' Peeps; an appropriately louche Slacker; and more glo-stick-dance-meets-portentous-metal-hop (also a thing) in Remind Me, one of several tracks taken from their new album it’s not us. The second set was the buttercream frosting on the cake (and the sprinkles. And cherry.)
Opening with (what else) the fiendish rhythms of Plunger, followed by a killer triad of Ringo, The Floor and Wappy Sprayberry, plus the best rendition of Live and Let Die you’ll ever hear, all bookended by another personal favourite, an utterly monster version of Ocean Billy. Fan-fucking-tastic… and Plunger would just like to take this opportunity to apologise to any Asheville concertgoers who got headbanging-sweaty-hair-whipped during this set.
Plunger blew the entire annual budget on the umVIP package, and weren’t short changed: great, friendly organisation who had tickets, passes, wristbands... everything to hand as and when needed. No “How are you spelling that?” “The list isn’t ready yet” “You can’t bring that in here, mate” “Who are you?” malarkey that makes up so much of the normal Plunger gig experience. And that’s before mentioning the reserved jigging-about space and bar… Worth every penny, and every minute of the 23 hour trip out.
*We DID actually get to go to one tiny crowd in a huge venue show… although that was the VIP pre-show ‘soundcheck’ (in reality a thirty minute full-on, full-tilt showlet that was probably worth the 4,000 mile trip in itself) Just like being at home, really.

I just saw that stupid #ItsNotUs hashtag on Facebook and the people using it really just blew my mind.
Like the literal people that I said that this would happen if they voted for Trump are using this fucking hashtag.
You said, “You’re just being negative. No one actually thinks that anymore, we just want to make sure our voices are heard and no one who supports Trump are literally Nazis. They are just people like me who are sick of oppression and want their voices heard.”
HELLO? Wake the fuck up and accept the consequences of your actions. Don’t say this isn’t on me when you voted for this to happen with full awareness of what your actions would cause.
And oppression? Adam, you were only made to be put on equal ground with others for four years as opposed to over 100+ years of actual oppression, where people were made to feel less human. And you are wanting to say that your voices aren’t heard, when they are the voices that have been heard the most throughout history?
WHAT. THE. FUCK.
You don’t get to bow out that fucking easily when we all know you damn well knew and just now want the easy way out to not atone for your actions.

Racism doesn’t always look like the KKK marching hoodless in broad daylight. Racism also looks like white liberals getting angry at people of color who ask them to confront how they benefit from white supremacy and white privilege. It looks like white women telling me that I am being divisive by asking for an honest conversation about race and racism within feminist circles. It looks like tone-policing, emotional labor, objectification, fetishization, the white-savior complex, staying silent when you hear overt racism, saying nothing about working in a mostly white to all-white office, ignoring gentrification and the school-to-prison pipeline, loving The Help but hating Girls Trip.
"It has always been on white people to end systems of oppression that their ancestors either started or were complicit in at one point or another."
White liberal racism and ignorance is colorblind and complex—you “don’t see color” until a Black person beats you at getting the job you wanted. You don’t mind putting #ItsNotUs in your tweet, but you refuse to dismantle white supremacy from the top down because you’re scared of confronting those you consider to be friends or family. Meanwhile, white supremacists and Nazis harass Black, indigenous and people of color activists online and “sieg heil” amongst lit tiki torches on a university campus. This has always been you. It has always been on white people to end systems of oppression that their ancestors either started or were complicit in at one point or another.
We need white liberals to confront how white supremacy protects them, how they have a privilege which allows them to see blatant racism and still debate the merits of a dialogue with white supremacists and Nazis who want people of color and Jewish people dead. We need white liberals to confront racism in its many forms with courage and persistence, because racism isn’t going to die off with younger generations. The white racists in Charlottesville learned their racism from their parents and their own children will learn it from them. Racism is the legacy of white supremacists and the white people who did nothing to stop it. This is us. This is America.
