What makes an Undertale AU like interesting and fun to get into?? I’ve always wanted to make one but I’m terrified no one will like it

Ok before i answer i’d like to make it clear that my answer is not objective or correct, i’ll only be talking about my own point of view of what makes an AU interesting to get into (it’ll also be a good idea for you to ask this question to different people to see their point of view, so you’d get an idea of what people usually care about)

So with that in mind, for me it’s the uniqueness of the Au

But don’t get me wrong with this point, what I mean by uniqueness of the Au is whether the Au’s concept take interesting twists and turns, the base concept or main idea can be like other Aus or it can have similarities with other Aus it’s fine

To elaborate further, let’s take a look at “Something New” and “Dusttale”, both Aus’ main concepts are Sans killing everyone in the underground, but this is where the similarities end, cause we can all agree that Killer and Murder couldn’t be further from being different, with different motives, different stories, different characteristics, etc

It’s completely fine if the Au has similarities with other Aus, but what does the Au have that’s different/unique about it? Does it explore something that’s been explored before but with its own unique take? Or does it explore a new idea/story?

To give you an example, @byrdblood ‘s TAU is an Au that I was immediately immersed into, and while it focuses on the Nightmare gang (which so many other Aus do btw), Keegan is using their amazing Au to explore concepts in so much depth and detail that nobody usually explores, which are all also explored through the pov of their own unique character called “Abaddon” (my beloved), who Keegan uses to explore their own ideas, what I’m saying, is that while Keegan is using characters that people have used before in so many stories and Aus, Keegan still brought his own unique take on the characters with emphasis on exploring traits and characteristics that people usually don’t really think of, all while bringing his own new and unique character into the mix to explore Abaddon’s unique story as they try to reach their happy ending (correct me if I’m wrong about any info here Keegan i’ve yet to read the carrd in full hchchcch)

Hell, you don’t have to bring in an idea, your Au can simply be unique by exploring a story through the eyes of a character that isn’t usually used in the fandom, for example, i always immediately get hooked to any Au that has Papyrus as the main focus! I really love Papyrus (and believe it or not, but in terms of favorite characters, Papyrus has always been my number one fave character, i prefer him over Sans actually), so when i see Aus exploring Papyrus in a fandom that explores Aus through Sans most of the time? I literally melt with joy, an example of this is the forgettable Au that I’m shaking with excitement to see what its creator has in store for it (the prologue starts tomorrow OML EEEEE)

But i still want to emphasize again that it’s ok for the Au to have similarities with other Aus, we all get inspired by each other and we all have our own fave things to explore even if it was explored a hundred times before, so please don’t get worked up about whether your Au is “unique enough”, or assume that you have to make up a completely new concept that has never ever been explored before for your Au to be interesting, cause believe me, people will recognize your hard work and the love you bore in your own Au, regardless of whether it explores a unique concept or not

With all this in mind, i’d like to emphasize again that this is all from my point of view, my answer isn’t an objective answer that should be taken as a rule for how you should make your own Au

And i have a genuine small advice, when you make the Au, make it so YOU enjoy it, not so it gets popular or that other people love it, i completely understand the desire to have what you worked so hard on and what you love shared with people so people will also love it, i genuinely understand it, but if you only make the Au with whether people would enjoy it or not in mind, it’ll only make you perceive your Au as some sort of burden that you have to perfect or that you have to make into something you yourself don’t even enjoy just so other people love it

And y’know, allow me to get a bit personal here

But I say this as someone who used to base my art and ideas/stories’ worth on numbers and likes and reblogs, etc, by the time i reached 2021? I actually genuinely and legitimately hated my own art, and it reached a point in which i was genuinely contemplating to quit making art altogether, but then i remember taking a 4 months break from social media after, and in that break, i continued making art without posting at all, in which i would literally cry cause i genuinely couldn’t even love what i made anymore, but i still pushed and continued making art, and it took me 3 months before i started liking what i made again, those 4 months reminded me what was genuinely important, why i made art in the first place, I made art cause I love it, i made art cause I enjoy it

And i made the decision after that numbers will never be my priority ever again, i’d be completely lying if i told you that it was easy to let go of the habit to care about numbers (and sometimes even get back to that habit from time to time), but it wasn’t easy at all, it took time, effort, and so much self discipline, but i actually did reach a point where I genuinely just don’t really care, but do you know what helped me not care? I stopped seeing my notes as numbers and start seeing them as people

Cause even if I get 1 single like or 1 single reblog, it is still one person who took time of their day to like/reblog the thing i made

What I’m saying, is there’s no way your Au will never be loved by anyone at all (it’s literally statistically impossible) even if it’s one singular person, someone is absolutely bound to care about your Au, and please cherish the people who care and love your Au even if they’re few, cause even if they’re few, they still love the thing you made y’know? And would definitely love to see what you do with it

Some of my hot takes for the fandom. I have no desire to insult anybody with these, these are only my opinions. But now onto the hot takes:

Dusttale is a better written than Dreamtale once we consider the novels. For more elaboration, one of the three creators of Dusttale had written a bunch of novels that are considered semi canon to the narrative. These novels detail and show the downfall of Sans from being The Judge to becoming The Genocider. Each part of the novel, which is available in AO3 though in the Korean language, is a delight to read and some parts of it even gave me chills. It made Dusttale from just a mediocre AU for me to one of the best aus, a straight 7/10. It's not the best but the side novels definitely need attention.

Error!Sans is genuinely stronger than many people make him out to be. While he's definitely not the immortal invincible destroyer that the majority of the fandom portrayed as. He's also not as harmless, remember he has canonically admitted to destroying universes before. We even see him during when he destroying a universe, the Undyne one where he first met Core. So yeah, while I still ain't buying him as a super strong entity that most of the fandom portrays him as, I also don't buy him as harmless. He's somewhere in the middle for me, a decently strong guy who's still a dork/loser, it's literally one of his best traits for me.

Execution is the most important thing when it comes to writing. Even bad ideas can be incredibly good if they are executed well. Dusttale novels are a good example since they turned a bad and boring idea, Sans kills everyone for lv to defeat the human, into a good read.

The problem with the over sansification in the fandom with most outcodes turning out to be Sans is that most of them don't have effort put into them. There are genuinely very few new Sans outcodes I have seen that have actual effort put into them or any story besides a summary. It is this factor that often paints them in a bad light and makes people lose interest. A good written character would always attract people regardless if its a Sans or any other Undertale character and vice versa for bad written.

Axetale is kinda solid as an au and should definitely be noticed more.

Again just my opinions and I don't mean to offend anyone with them. That is all.

I just realized something.

About Dreamtale. Why we're so touched by this AU, and by the twins.

I just understood why Nightmare is so popular, why he touches us, why he touches ME, even though he's NOT my favorite character compared to Dream, Ace or Error.

Because we identify with his problems?

Yes.

Because we sympathize with his backstory?

Certainly.

Because we love drama and tentacles?

... Meh, for sure.

Because Dreamtale brings an extremely interesting symbolic theme about feelings?

Indeed.

Because fandom has developed the story of the two siblings in all its forms, and we've been taken on board without really realizing it by the fan creations - comics, drawings, fan fiction - that we discover as we go along?

Absolutly.

But that doesn't explain the intensity of this emotional involvement. Why did Nightmare inspire me so much, and still do today? Because very often MAIS CHIOTTE DE SES MORTS QU'IL ME SAOULE BORDEL DE SCROGNEUGNEU?! (Untranslatable in English, sorry QwQ)

And then I realised.

Doesn't this story remind you of another?

I don't know why, but I get the impression that NOBODY makes this obvious parallel. At least I've never seen any comparative fanart or people talking about it.

The majority of Dreamtale fans are first and foremost Undertale fans, who went through the Gameplay, Let's play's, etc. before discovering the AU's. The majority have played or watched the game and discovered the Lore. Listened to the OSTs. Enjoyed the characters.

The majority witnessed the magnificent end of the Pacifist Timeline and the ensuing burst of tears.

And who, for God's sake, has never been touched by Asriel's fate? This child who died far too soon, who never meant any harm to anyone, who died because of a bad decision, then was resurrected as a sadistic, soulless being incapable of love?

Don't you think Night looks a lot like him? And that Dream is a cross between Frisk and Chara?

Not in personality, nor necessarily in the story, but in the way they touche the audience through their shared destiny.

Two siblings who love each other dearly are brutally separated by a quarrel in which one loses his life, transformed into a powerful, emotionless demon. The other sleeps for years before waking up, lost and confused... Then they embark on an adventure with a guide, discover the world that has evolved without them, grow up, meet new people, help, save.

And this co-dependent relationship. The demon is still a child at heart. He wants to play with his sibling, even to the point of committing atrocious acts to make them stay with him, even if it means taking their soul and killing them a million times over. But nostalgia takes hold of him again. Deep in his overpowering heart, he feels all the souls of the world bound together, he feels determination of monsters and humans, the love they have for each other. It's all too much for him. He succumbs to his feelings and bursts into tears. He apologizes. The two siblings reconcile.

It's the kind of story we'd all like to give Dream and Nightmare, isn't it?

We want to save Night.

But like Asriel, it's impossible. We all know by now that Corrupted Nightmare isn't Night, don't we? It's a revelation that hits us when we search a bit on the creator's Tumblr after reading the Prologue. The story leaves us no choice: he died five hundred years ago, and that remains unchanging. There is no hope.

He has to go. Become corrupt again. He has to die again. Because that's how it must be.

Yeah yeah, we love Sans in Undertale, he's pretty cool and the Multiverse revolves around him. But as soon as we play the game, it's Asriel we're crying for. For good reason, Dreamtale, the story that most closely resembles his tragedy, is one of the most popular universes. Is that chance? Or have we all unconsciously drawn the parallel?

Now, when I listen Hopes and Dreams, Save the World, His Theme, one part of me thinks of Asriel and Chara, the other part thinks of Dream and Nightmare.

It was to save Asriel that fans started developing parallel universes. And it's to save Night that we're repeating the process.

It would have been a lot cooler to put Dream and Nightmare in Chara and Asriel's bodies, I think.

And the HELL you imagine CORRUPTED NIGHTMARE WITH THE APPEARANCE OF FULL-POWERED ASRIEL ????

Damn, I would have fan-girled instead of foe-girl on him I guess 🤔

Or for those who love big, ugly monsters, in PHOTOSHOP FLOWEY mode!

À propos de Dreamtale. Pourquoi on est autant touché par cet AU, et par les jumeaux.

Je viens de comprendre pourquoi Nightmare est aussi populaire, pourquoi il nous touche, pourquoi il ME touche alors que POURTANT, ce n'est pas mon personnage préféré comparé à Dream, Ace ou Error.

Je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais j'ai l'impression que PERSONNE ne fait ce parallèle pourtant évident. En tout cas je n'ai jamais vu de fanart comparatif ou de gens en parler.

C'est beaucoup trop pour lui. Il succombe à ses sentiments et éclate en larmes. Il s'excuse. Les deux frères se réconcilient.

Belle histoire qu'on a tous envie de donner à Dream et Nightmare, pas vrai ?

On a envie de sauver Night.

Mais comme Asriel, c'est impossible. Nous savons tous à présent que Nightmare Corrompu n'est pas Night, n'est-ce pas ? C'est une révélation qui nous percute quand on cherche un peu sur le Tumblr de la créatrice après avoir lu le Prologue. L'histoire ne nous laisse aucun choix, il est mort il y a cinq-cents ans et cela reste immuable. Il n'y a aucun espoir.

i was watching a bunch of videos on blogthegreatrouge

and remembered my once love for PJs Daycare. but now i know its disgusting like.. so bad. so is she. i just. ugh.

so, im going to remake it. i mean remake that shit i will do my best to make it better. starting with removing all the fankids characters and ships because.. sanscest is w e i r d.

anyway, for the people who some how dont know what im talking about is heres a summery. if i spelled that wrong shut up no i didnt

pjs daycare was a AU for undertale made by blogthegreatrouge. the au, was as it says, a daycare. basically all the sans aus were children, from like 3-6 i think, and the characters were... sanscest ship characters or sans fusions. one of the caretakers, and our- basic mc, is Paperjam, or PJ, the fusion between ink sans and error sans. i say fusion because i think that what they were originally intended to be before the fandom... yoinked them. aslo i refuse to ship sans aus together because thats WEIRD AS ALL SHIT. anyway. those are the basics, shipkids/fusion sanses are the caretakers and the sanses are children. interesting concept ig (i will make it better trust)

ok now that we have the basics down, lets get to the story. this was a ask blog so there wasnt much story, but from what i do remember, there were 2 major plot lines. the first plot line was uhm. borderline gr00ming. basically fresh sans, the satire sans au, has a crush on PJ. this fresh is i think about 3 yrs old. so ok, hes a kid, kids are weird. he claims he wants to marry pj. again, child, children say that stuff alot. and you think pj would be yk, normal and be like " no no, we cant do that" nicely and shit. WELL HE DOESNT. THIS BITCH SAYS "we cant get married righ now, but when your all grown up we can ^^" IM SORRY HUH. SIR. WHAT. not only that, later, there is a ask of how would pj react to adult fresh. in which its super weird with really gross sexual tension. not only that, lets follow in this aus rule, aus made by the same creator/s are gonna be related. ok. error, fresh and geno/aftertale are brothers. kinda weird but lets keep going here. pj in rouges interpretation is a ship child. A SHIP CHILD. MEANING FRESHIE HERE IS IS UNCLE?? ITS SO WEIRD?? also there is a mini plot line where ink and error like each other and its a big deal even tho, again, CHILDREN. also same person but i digress.

our next plotline is... where shit hits the fan. so, error, gets deathly sick and needs to go to the hospital. didnt know monsters had hospitals but ok. geno, error's older brother who is at most, 5, gets really depressed. and ik depression can come at any age, however, GENO here tries to commit farewell. this. doesn't. make. sense. a child isnt old enough to even comprehend death that well, let alone have the feeling to die AND ACT ON IT. not only that, right after stopping geno from leaving this mortal plane (isnt he immortal though?) they completely forget about it and have this weird romance between palette and goth (swap sans and dream sans) (geno and reaper) and its super weird, and gross (not as gross as nerd and jock but still) and palette is weirdly obsessive over goth and shit so its all just a huge pile of SHIT

oh yeah there is also this weird plot line with like this trio of mini villains, one being rouges self insert i think so. yeah.

anyway, that was pj's daycare. i will be reworking and remaking the entirety of this au. so uh.

Today our writing assignment was to write a fanfic. I am not kidding. They let us choose a fandom and everything. Naturally, I chose the Undertale fandom (specifically UTMV but same difference) and I wrote this that I want to share here because it has actual passion put into it. (it’s set in that one AMV i made where everyone is a different time period)

The light tapping of tiny feet echoed through the infinite library of worn books, penetrating the complete silence like a needle through thin cloth. If anyone were nearby, which they weren’t, they would have noticed a faint scent of iron lingering below the musty smell of weathered pages.

A tiny hoof wrapped around the polished wood of a curved oak banister, its owner tip-tapping up the carpeted stairwell, straining to reach with her short arms. The unnatural flexibility of her hooves would have bewildered any monster had they been nearby to witness this act, but again, there were none, so she continued on her way, oblivious to her apparent strangeness.

The little outcode’s parents could be very clearly identified by her look. Her small flexible hooves, her dark blue bones, her fluffy brown ���tail,” and most noticeably, the streams of blood staining her face below her bright green eyes.

The outcode stepped off the stairwell and onto the upper balcony of a tall shelf, gazing up at the endless wall of books that stretched above her. She slowly touched a hoof tip to her cheek, the blood wrapping around it like a string, then pulled it away, strings of blood extending with it.

With a quick flick of the wrist, she sends the string shooting through the air, landing on the spine of an elegantly decorated blue book on a high shelf. She reels the string back in, and the book falls from the shelf, landing in her outstretched arms.

She peers at the cover, cocking her head slightly. Evidently, she has not yet learned to read, and she puzzles over the cover for a spell before promptly giving up and opening the book to inspect the inside.

Before she can begin her inspection, however, a disembodied hand materializes in front of her and gently plucks the book from her grasp. She lets out a disapproving whine, grabbing for the book before noticing the character that has suddenly appeared just a few steps away, a rather amused glint in his eyes.

The outcode blinks innocently, slowly lowering her grasping hooves and lowering her chin, attempting to feign ignorance.

“You are Fawn and Malfunction’s child, are you not?” a voice says from behind her. She jumps, nearly spinning in a circle to look at whoever had spoken so suddenly.

She is met with the sight of a Sans, and a familiar one at that. His mouth upturned in a sly grin, he crouches down to her level, eyes narrowed and sparking with playfulness. “Did I not tell you to refrain from touching the AUs, Seahorse? Are you sneaking over here to take a look while we are preoccupied?”

Seahorse pouts slightly, avoiding Inkwell’s eyes. “No… jus… fell. Thas all.”

Inkwell chuckles lightly. “Do not worry, I am not mad. You are young, it is only natural to be curious. But you should know that the Librarian can sense you here. Nothing escapes his eyes, not even sneaky little intruders fiddling with the books. Understand?”

“Uh huh…”

“Good. Now, your fathers have been looking for you. I suggest you hurry back to them before they declare you missing.”

Seahorse lets out a soft snort, but obliges, blipping out of existence to return to the Anti-void.

What is Twinfell? Twinfell is an AU based around Underfell (creator @underfell) where the monsters in the underground are very edgy, hateful, and fueled with fear. At first, the monsters were just like the ones in Undertale, but after they were trapped underground, they turned to hate and fear. Asgore was the first person in this AU to fall, and everyone went down the same path as him eventually.

The story of Underfell starts after the monsters have fully integrated into this mindset, but unlike normal Underfell, Twinfell also combines the events of Flowerfell as part of the AU. Flowerfell was created by @Siviosanei, where every time Frisk dies, the timeline resets. And when they return to life, a buttercup grows on their body. The flowers could not be removed as it hurts Frisk. Despite the cruel nature of the characters in Underfell, Frisk remains pacifist.

Twinfell takes place 7 years after Flowerfell happens. (In my AU version of Flowerfell, instead of the ending where Sans uses Frisks' SOUL along with the other 6 human SOULs to break the barrier and free all of the Monsters), he instead chooses to absorb Frisks' SOUL and lets the other 6 fade into nothingness due to his depression and grief over losing Frisk, as well as his fears that even after everything Frisk did trying to teach the Underfell Monsters the meaning of kindness and pacifism, that they might not have learned anything at all. Basically instead choosing to trap the UF monsters behind the Barrier with no way to escape.

Undyne, and Papyrus however, learning about Sans GODsoul and remembering how kind Frisk was, and seeing perhaps Asgore was wrong about all humans being heartless bastards, the 3 of them decide to make a rebellion group called the "Freedom Fighters" where they vow to take down Asgore, the Royal Guards as well as Asgore's "Kill or Be Killed" mindset once and for all and make the underground a much more inhabitable place.

How did the AU initially come about ? 

I was fascinated with the story and lore (as well as the overall aesthetic of Underfell) and obsessing over Flowerfell at the time, and I never noticed those two were completely different AUs until I basically did a deep dive into them both. And basically I wondered "what if I combined the two AUs together???" Another reason for it, was because I frankly got tired of the fandom for the most part sort of 'meme-ing' on the Underfell AU and other adjacent "Fell" AUs, I wanted to take the concept of Underfell and make it even more darker and twisted. And also dive even deeper into the whole concept of the Monsters losing their morality and humanity (which was the number one reason why I personally love the Underfell universe the most of all Undertale AUs I've read about and gotten interested in.) And wanted to do my own take on the verse, hence "Twinfell."

What is fighting like in the game ?

If there ever WAS a game made properly for Twinfell, I was sort of thinking the fighting system would be "real-time" instead of taking turns. (Or maybe its still turn based just like canon UNDERTALE, if you are fighting against any of the members of the Freedom Fighters group) vs the monsters on Asgore's side and The Royal Guard, who fight you based on real time.

In the RUINs, it's also turn-based, since technically the monsters are unaffiliated with either side, (some may fight you based on real-time depending how desperate they get in the fight. like during low HP moments etc.)

So I’m thinking just like in the canon Underfell Universe, that there isn’t a “pacifist” or a “ genocide” route.

More of like a Trust, Betrayal, Closure routes.

Trust: Otaku manages to befriend all the monsters and make them trust one another again.

Betrayal: Flowey or Akumu pins the monsters against each other resulting in Frisk getting blamed for it.

Closure: Otaku befriends all the monsters and manages to make them realize the wrongs they’ve committed. Finally finding closure within each other.”

What is the FIGHT/ACT/ITEM/MERCY interface like ? “FIGHT-ACT-ITEMS-MERCY" it’d still be the same as canon Undertale.

FIGHT- Butt heads against the monsters, but when things start getting seriously bad for the monster With them being at the last strand of HP they have, Flowey would step in and say “Maybe now they’ll listen to you” The fight option would be gone and then Mercy-> Spare HOWEVER if you ONLY fight them, it doesn’t mean they trust you, it just means they fear you. Choosing to only fight would still decide the routes.

ACT- same concept, trying to convince them not to kill you by making them trust you. Act takes longer per usual, but instead of Spare it’d be Mercy-> Convince Because by this time they have a little trust in you, and would come around wanting to help you. And themselves.

ITEMS- same thing, except you have a surprise box cutter in flowey's pot that isn’t known about until the end of the route.

MERCY - Self-Explanatory. May change to "Convince" or "Spare" depending on actions.

AKUMU RENGAI

Both were abandoned on the side of the road near an abandoned shopping mall by their parents at the age 7 and for 5 years they basically lived on their own and did what they could to survive up until CPS (Child Protective Services) of Ebott City finally found and rescued them and brought to an orphanage where the twins lived in for 2 more years and would move from foster family to foster family without much success.

(Mostly due to the Fosters wishing to seperate the twins since Akumu was very rebellious, and was suffering from abandonment issues and trauma, while Otaku was very easy going and well behaved. They thought Aku was a problem child.)

To avoid getting seperated again, Akumu took and lied to her brother to go sight seeing by climbing Mt. Ebott for a "Family Photo" of the two of them standing on the mountain overseeing Ebott City, when they both tripped and accidentally fell into a massive hole near the summit and landed on Golden Flowers….

Fun facts:

The Eldest Twin (by like, 10 minutes)

Has the SOUL of Discipline. (A combination of DETERMINATION and BRAVERY)

Effects: The SOUL becomes rock-hard. Able to bounce off attacks without taking too much damage. (About half the damage.) Though if done, the attacks will eventually fall back down at a faster pace and change color to injure the host at double the attack power it would have normally been.

14 years old.

Very rebellious, and acts much older than her actual age.

Is also extremely protective of her brother, and will even kill both monsters AND other humans if it meant keeping him safe.

Practically trusts no one, except for Otaku considering he is the only family she has left that still gives a shit about her and puts up with her "bad attitude" and issues.

Able to see and use the SAVE stars, cannot RESET.

OTAKU RENGAI

Has the SOUL of DILIGENCE. (A mix of DETERMINATION, INTEGRITY and PATIENCE)

Effects: Otaku's SOUL creates a shield around itself that can withstand 2 bullet hits before it breaks, in which then the user will take twice the amount of damage when hit. The user with this SOUL must thus be more studious in memorizing the attack patterns and be more careful dodging.

Able to RESET, but cannot SAVE.

FLOWEY

Regained some of his emotions during his journey with Frisk

The boot he resides in belongs to Otaku

Uses his 'friendliness pellets' to heal the twins. Each pellet is worth 1HP everytime the twins touches one, they regain 1HP

TORIEL

Makes meat pies out of the fallen humans that had fallen into the RUINS, and stores their corpses in her freezer.

After Chara and Asriel died, Toriel become emotionally detached from everyone, especially her ex-husband

God every time I see a take that's like "why did undertale give you fight mechanics if it doesnt want you to use it" i get so annoyed, because like, you can totally just do a neutral run, you can do that, go do a neutral run, the dialogue is really funny actually sans just like "bro what the hell"

"oh but the characters criticize you" yeah, because you did a murder, did you expect them to be happy you did a murder? Like congrats you killed snowdrake, now his father has lost both his son and his wife, of course the game isn't going to throw you a party about it. The whole theme of the game is your actions have consequences.

"oh but it's not the true end" do you know how many video game there exists where there's non canon ends and one true end, this is not a new thing, besides, its your game, you can make the true end the one where you killed everyone but jerry for your save file, you're allowed to do that.

"the game paints itself as an incorrect way vs a correct way to play" WRONG the fandom did that, that's not on the game, the game world just responds to your actions, of course people are going to be nicer in the "dont kill everyone" route then the "oh my god you killed hundreds of people" route, that doesn't mean the pacifist ending is "correct" while genocide is "incorrect" it just means that your actions are seen and understood by the people around you.

Plus, if anything the game rewards the player for doing different kinds of runs with different kill vs spare ratios because you get new dialogue and new scenes and thus can learn more about the world. There's over 15 different potential neutral run phone calls depending on what you did on that run! That's not discouraging the player! That's actively giving the player more content! That's a reward! That's an incentive!

Like....the whole point of the game is that your choices matter, and they have consequences, there's even a whole prophecy about it, the angel of mercy and the angel of death and how the savior could be either. The fandom favors pacifist greatly because they love these characters sure, but again, that's not the fault of the game.

In a game where your choices matter, where each character has a strong personality and connections and social circles, of course killing a character will have ripple effects. The game would make no sense if undyne doesn't care if you killed papyrus or all of snowdin. Of course she cares? She's the leader of the guard, papyrus is one of her closest friends, of course she gets mad?

If you do bad things, people will call you bad is like... rule number one of a game where your choices decide how it plays out. Fallout has been doing that since it came out in 1997!

The game about war and conflict and sacrifice and how it intersects with the lives of innocent people and how it changes people for good or bad is going to show how murder intersects with the lives of innocent people and how it changes people for good to bad.

Like I don't know how to not be rude about this, but just, sorry that the characters hated that you killed one of them? sorry that the characters in this world dont think murder is cool? sorry that undyne says you're a bad person and wants to kill you for killing all her friends? So, abit has changed over the few months and i have a update, coupled with info for all you new guys who found this blog!

1) AU is decided to be 16+. Its suggestive, no NSFW will be posted/shown as i want whatever content i MYSELF to post to be accessible to everyone within a comfortable range! There will be light sexual jokes, however if at any point it reaches too much, please tell me! I know the AU itself should obviously be considered a Explicit Rated AU, however i know there are people who enjoy the AU without the sexual aspects.

2) This AU is not a fan AU OR variant: This AU was made with the plan to 100% rewrite Underlust, i will explain below!!

Why the rewrite?:

I've loved Underlust since i joined the Undertale community, and others have too! However, the owner WAS involved and DID create content involving fontcest, a nazi Chara, Frans content, and was friends/mutuals with others who also created gross content like BlogTheGreatRogue and Lizherubones. This disgusted me and made alot of others feel the same. The AU was left off on a confusing as shit note, from the disgusting writing of Lust MTT to the messed up relationship between the brothers. I want to erase this the best i can. Alot of characters have also 0 content (Such as Lust Alphys) and although i will mostly focus on Sans/Papyrus/Frisk still, i WILL be creating content for mostly every character to again ensure the AU is fully fleshed out for as much enjoyment as possible.

Wheres the creator/owner?:

Awhile back, the owner, NSFWshamecave/Niel, left the internet and the AU for personal and mental reasons and bounced between owning and not owning the Au. They have since been MIA(Missing In Action) from the internet and AU, i doubt they will return or be involved at this point. The AU is considered fandom owned, which if you prefer that i support it, but do not interact with my blog as im basing everything on a rewritten POV with the entire intent to overhaul the AU without being too different or too similar.

What about the Underlust domain name?:

Lusttale CAN be called Underlust, BUT i prefer Lusttale to separate it as its alot easier, HOWEVER i have no issue with it being called Underlust! (Just still please credit/tag me, id love to see any content!)

What about fan AUs or others who make their own Variants?:

Keep going! I support these ten fold. Ive seen so many creative AUs overall, including a recent aroace one that has such adorable designs and is why i want to refresh myself and explain this blog to anyone new who might mistake me as a fan account. If you want to consider your variant a version/variant of my Rewritten AU, please tag me! Id love to see your AUs, your Varaints, EVERYTHING!!

HOWEVER. I do NOT support a single soul who ever uses my AU for Frans, Fontcest, or akin. Dont tag me OR interact with me, its public knowledge how the community feels about those, and im one of the many who don't like that content and wish for my AU to not be used in it. Self inserts, OC/Y/N x Lusttale, or etc is the same, id love to see it!!

What about Swaplust/Lustfell/AUs?:

Swaplust is also inactive: I have had my own interpretation of Swaplust since i found the AU when it was first made, Lustfell however i dont know, if its requested i will create something but i dont want to just claim every Lust AU out there. Not saying im claiming ownership of Swaplust, im saying that the Swaplust i want to make will be considered canon AU and it will be the ONLY Underlust AU i will ever claim, Swaplust has the same exact permissions. (Swaplust too had a very close Frans suggested ship, that is my reason for it)

To clarify if needed, im not forcing the view of me owning the AU onto every Underlust created content, im just saying if you yourself, the community, support what i do, i will continue, hence why i say tag me! I love to see it!

What about headcanons/outdated info like Sans being shorter?:

RN, Sans is the same size as Gaster Sans (i think 5' something?) however im fine with people drawing him short! ^^

Head-canons are also fully fine!!! Tell me any you think of, id love to hear. As long as you respect that i have my own plans, id be overjoyed to read whatever you guys think of or have.

So, to sum it up, Underlust has had a MIA owner since 2019/2020. Because of the history, and the way its loved, its a massive honor if i could step up and help give the community a AU with a solid backstory, solid characters with fleshed out personalities, and a structured plot that will replace something that was/is beloved. The best i can explain it, is my goal is to structure the AU but still keep support for the community as the AU was indeed considered Fandom Owned, again, you do not have to support me wanting to claim it, just do not bash me for it, as im absolutely not considering Lusttale a variant or AU, im considering Lusttale canon.

Do you have any good sans/sans long fic recommendations? Papyrus/papyrus and papyrus/sans is good as well

If you go on AO3, you'll find there are 895 undertale fics that have wordcounts over 100,000 words. I generally consider that a longfic. Of those, 101 are tagged Sans/Sans, 18 are Papyrus/Papyrus, and 47 are Papyrus/Sans. Of those, I have only read a very very small fraction, and remember even less because I have terrible memory.

The Ebott is a Multiverse series is currently over 320,000 words long, stretched across 7 fics of varying length. The bulk of that is stuffed into Part 2: Burlesque, a Dancetale Sans/Underfell Sans/Underlust Sans poly fic sitting at a whopping 242,709 with the latest update (chapter 54). The series is as of yet unfinished, as Parts 2, 5, and 7, which occur concurrently in the timeline, are still ongoing. You'll find, alongside the aforementioned and other skeleton centric ships, Sans/Underswap Sans, Fellswap Papyrus/Underswap Papyrus, Underfell Papyrus/Underpatch Sans, and Dancetale Papyrus/Fellswap Sans throughout the series, a different ship being the focus of each installment. Part 1 and Part 5 are consecutive, and technically focus on the same ship. The Anthology (Part 6) has multiple ships in it, but its a bit messier and jumps around. Overwhelmingly romance focused, domestic, and feel-good themes, but mind the tags in some places.

My oldest Undertale fic, Resonance, is finished at 241,287 words. There is a concurrent sub-fic with extra scenes in it too. It has several different kinds of ships in it, as I was experimenting, which include Sans/Sans and Sans/Papyrus, and I like to think one of the big important ships is Underfell Sans/Underlust Sans, but the story's focus is action based rather than romance based. It's a Dead Dove so really read through all those tags and don't eat things you don't like.

Recs I Read:

Part on of Mercy_Run 's KR Trilogy is called Karmic Retribution. It's 127,905 words and the ship is Sans/Underfell Papyrus/Underfell Sans. It has been a while since I read it, but I remember it takes place underground in Underfell after classic Sans is displaced there. It was one of my first reads when I got in the fandom and I think it had a formative influence on me <3

Another Sans/Underfell Papyrus/Underfell Sans longform story I can highly recommend is the ain't this the life Series by Nilchance (aka @glitterchance ). While each of the installments average around 3-8k words long, the series is 524,061 words long across 39 works as of now. It's technically still ongoing too! It's written evocatively and with a sort of grounded, judgementless emotion that lets the characters be flawed and worthy of love like- like thats how it's supposed to be. I think I remember the feeling of being free to feel things more than the details of the fics themselves, although I am still screaming about certain emotionally charged plot twists. Rated E for Smut.

If you don't mind a whole fucking lot of Dead Dove Hurt/Little to No Comfort, I can enthusiastically recommend It's Not That Simple by GoldAU (aka @jellyfish-swims-through-gold ) and @tkwolf45 !! It's 231,555 words long by itself, AND it is ONLY PART 1 of a 624,897 word long 4 PART SERIES!!! It's an Ink/Error/Reapertale Sans/Aftertale Sans (plus more secret poly additions later)* fic, and while it starts out rather wholesome, I will warn again though, that it is a Dead Dove with a lot of trigger warnings and heavy topics and Hurt that doesnt really have any sign of a happy ending until the end of Part 4. But I cannot stress enough that it is amazingly written and, if you can handle the pain, absolutely worth every moment!

I can also suggest Omega's Respite by my friends @diyami and GetMcDunkedOn (aka @starsgivemehp ). 249,320 words long and still ongoing. It focuses on a lot of surface AUs with a lot of cross-au skeleton ships! If you like A/B/O you might like this one!

I saw a few titles while doing my search that stood out to me, but I couldn't remember reading them so I can't be honest about recommending them. Which sucks, cuz they are probably also really good. You can try checking out HailSam's Fics or Raithwin's Fics or Lady_Kit's Fics (i filtered for the ships and wordcount already for you), whom I have heard good things about. I also generally like rec'ing MsMk for Papyrus/Papyrus stuff (although she doesnt usually do longfics per ce, she has some in the 25k and 50k range).

Or if you wanna pioneer, I'll even give you the searches I used! You can edit it a little (like lowering the wordcount cap, maybe you consider 50k a longfic) and even exclude tags you know you dont like uwu

For Undertale's eighth anniversary (I know I'm a day late I'm so sorry), I want to know what your experiences are with the game. I'll go first.

Undertale came out when I was 10 years old. I didn't know it existed then, but over the next 2 years, I had heard of it from somewhere. However, I also heard of the fandom and how crazy it was so I avoided Undertale like the plague. It was kind of a trend at the time when lots of people talked about Undertale and memed it to death, and I'm not the type to follow along with trends. Besides, I liked... something else at the time.

When the hype died down, I promptly forgot about the game too, but I still remembered Sans. Who would? He's an icon. That was until around 2020 when my sister was religiously watching these Minecraft music videos of certain fan songs, mostly from Five Nights at Freddy's, Bendy and the Ink Machine... and Undertale. I was interested in the Undertale one. Then I started putting more research into the game, and oh my gosh. I was surprised at how GOOD it was.

I fell in (platonic) love with Papyrus instantly. He was my favourite for a while. Just him. I was obsessed with finding out everything about him. I listened to songs, I looked at fanart and fanfics, I wanted to know EVERYTHING about Papyrus. If it weren't for Papyrus, I wouldn't have gotten into Undertale as much as I am now.

I then wondered why Sans was so popular. I looked into him too, and, I kid you not, I cried when I found out what he was going through. He instantly became another favourite, and for a while, I did the exact same thing for him as I did for Papyrus: obsessively find out everything about him. Hyperfixations are crazy.

Anyway, for a while, I was just watching playthroughs and researching the game. I didn't have it myself. I wanted to save up for it on my own. However, after a very bad day at school, my parents surprised me by downloading Undertale onto my Nintendo Switch. I am forever grateful for that.

During my first playthrough, I finally got to know more characters. I already knew about some of them from the comic dubs I watched on YouTube, but I didn't know all their names. I only knew Sans, Papyrus, Toriel, Flowey and Frisk. And then I met the others. The characters are my favourite part of ANYTHING I am interested in, and Undertale is no different. I got attached to all the characters: Undyne, Asgore, Alphys, Mettaton, Napstablook, and the ones I already mentioned. My first playthrough was magical, but it was frustrating at the same time.

Undyne was the hardest for me. I had to RESET because of her because I had no money and no items. And then there was Asgore. Photoshop Flowey was my favourite boss fight, and I loved befriending everyone, especially Undyne. She's really fun.

After I did the True Pacifist Route, I vowed never to reset. However, I... broke that promise. I did another Pacifist Route a few months later, but only because I wanted to fight Photoshop Flowey again. After a few more Pacifists, I stopped for good.

Nowadays, I create my own private stories about what the crew would do on the surface, as well as other AUs and stories I came up with. I still read Undertale comics and look at Undertale-related posts on Tumblr, and despite its flaws, I can see how much the fandom loves the game. I surely do.

Happy anniversary, Undertale. 8 years have flown very fast.

Summary: Sans decides to check out on Underlust one last time, never to step foot in there again, but, he finds his counterpart a lot more sober than usual and naturally, a conversation starts.

Warnings: Referenced sex, prescription drugs, check tags for further warnings.

I'm just dropping this here for you, not sure how receptive ya'll are of Underlust at the moment, but I missed it, wanted to put on the good ol' headcanon goggles and write- anyways, reblogs are appreciated greatly and keep me going

"I wasn't always like this, you know that right?" Lust asked quietly, running phalanges along his humerus.

"I find that hard to believe, all things considered buddy," Sans said, he sat beside his counterpart who gave a weak laugh, it sounded forced.

"Yeah, fair enough, I have been sucking and fucking for so long it only makes sense, but, before me and Papyrus got dispatched and given our injection of Lust, I was just like you," Lust said, the somber tone he held was shocking to Sans who continued to listen in silence, flitting between eye contact and the prescription pills in Lusts free hand, "lazy, carefree, cracking jokes and capable of love- we uh, we're very, very different now."

"For sure," Sans answered with, Lust leaned back on the pavement below them, crossing one leg over the other, he looked content with himself to an extent as he twirled the bottle in his gloved hand.

"But, that's life, you fall asleep feeling buzzed and wake up feeling ill, that washed over real fast though, then I was just horny," Lust continued to explain, Sans could only nod, "not a whole lot of fun, I had an entire life planned out, just me and a hotdog stand, slacking off and keeping my brother safe; that didn't happen though," he popped open the bottle of pills and downed one, "not sure how much you know about that."

"Not a lot I s'pose, but hey, you ain't wrong about life doing that, just be grateful your Frisk didn't genocide you, over, and over, and over," Sans said, he gestured a little bit with his hands for emphasis, he stuffed them back into his pockets promptly and continued to stare at the bottle of pills- Lust noticed and quirked a metaphorical brow.

"Curious 'bout the drugs?" Lust asked, shifting from resting on his back to propping himself on his elbows, a light blue rose to Sans face upon being caught staring, Lust nearly breaks out laughing, "you don't have to be so pussy! Not like you caught me taking it up the ass," Lust handed the bottle to Sans who glanced over the instructions.

"You need hormone pills? Not to be crass, but you seem like the kind of guy whose had more than enough sex to kill a nun," Sans said, the confusion in his tone was visceral, even as he shook the bottle gently to punctuate his sentence with the sound of pills against plastic.

"No doubt about it, but yeah, a lot of us monsters are destabilizing without those magic pills, laced with our last source of Lust that's running out by the minute," Lust explained as he took the bottle again, dropping the second pill on his tongue, he could already feel his marrow start to buzz, it was addictive, "did you know that Souls can decay?" Sans shakes his head, he has so many questions bouncing off the sides of his skull all at once.

Sans had a hard time choking out an answer, "souls can decay?" Lust gave a nod.

"Yeah, when a human dies, the soul is usually in pristine condition and can be preserved for longer with the dying art of science, well, its dying in my Underground at least," Lust sounded rather sad as he explained, "I used to study biology in my spare time, try and find out why I was always so sad, then came the injection, couldn't focus afterwards."

"That sounds terrible," Sans manages to answer with, "you can come to my Underground instead- or join Ink, he'll help you, he'll fix whats wrong with you," there's a type of hope in Sans' tone, but his offer comes across differently than intended to Lust.

"No can do, I have to stay here and suffer out the rest of my days, I have a brother to protect no matter the cost and a human to learn from," Lust explained, the buzz in his bones got stronger, he could feel his mind begin to haze, but everything was starting to feel so much better at the same time, "I should be leaving before those pills really start to kick in," he stood up and brushed down his pants, Sans followed.

"Suit yourself, call me up next time those pills wear off man, I'll always have an ear to lend, if I had one that is," Sans grin is unmistakable and it makes Lust smile for just long enough to feel happy, Sans pulls him in for a brief hug and he bristles against it momentarily before sinking into the simple touch- he feels hazy now, he's going to make a bad decision if he doesn't leave, "see ya 'round," Sans pulls away and cracks open a portal, he turns to leave but Lusts grip lingers on his wrists.

"You're sure you don't want to hang around a little bit longer?" Lust asked, his tone was oozing need despite his better judgement, Sans noted the magenta hue that had already started to overtake the royal purple of his pupils, they were a bit larger than usual, and his touch felt fiery.

"I'm sure," Sans said, prying away phalanges and hopping through the portal, he turned to face Lust, finding that vibrant magenta had already started to tint his skull; he closes the portal.

Sans knew that meant Lust was getting, well, lusty, to put simply, he just didn't know that there were drugs involved to keep him that way up until tonight. He didn't know that they really did live in a fuck or die world over there, he simply assumed it was just an overstatement to keep anyone who didn't belong out. He could've just, never entered, never learned, and never tested, but, he's almost glad he did, even if Lust doesn't remember to call him up when the drugs fade.

It's kind of weird.

One event change and he would be living a completely different life.

He starts on his way to the libarby, they must have some books on biology in there- if Lust can't figure out why he used to be so sad, then Sans will. He'll try to at the very least, he's still not entirely sure of how far he'll get, but expectations of living be damned, he can sure can do shit for a friend.

Purple Stars has grown again. There is a now a side-story that takes place directly after STUCK in the Underground. It focuses primarily on Sans, Papyrus, and Frisk although for the first four chapters its mostly on the skeletons, Grillby, Undyne and Gerson.

It also provides more backstory into how the brothers function, Grillby's role in their life, and about how Gerson and Undyne work as a "family unit" - which is not much. It expands how the Royal Guard functions too, more like "monster police" than anything.

It's been interesting to play with it, because this Frisk is--well, they made some choices for a reason, reasons hinted at in STUCK and this is just expanding upon it. It'll play into post Memory content as well.

With that being said I have some rough concepts for a world of Memory without the crossover elements. The core idea stays the same, the way its gotten there is what is different. I've been slowly drawing it out in comic form although backgrounds still remain the bane of my existence. I'll share some of that at some point.

What I can say is that humans are primarily unaware of magic, and things like magic and monsters have long been relegated to myth. That doesn't stop a thriving Mage underground from existing. A lot of the lore building I've been doing in Memory is easily moved over too. The idea that Mages, Monsters, and Magic dislike being underground, dislike losing sky and air that the earth does to them -- and yet that Mages tend to build their lives under the earth despite this.

That their "government buildings" (in this case there isn't much of them to have an actual functioning government but more of a shadow government ad-hoc'd onto the human governments without their knowledge) are often created deep within the earth where magic is stifled. So on and so forth.

There are two factions in this world. The "Archmaster's" followers, and then the followers of Romulus and Adhil who are two known survivors of the War, and thus are...very old. At least Romulus is rumored to be so, but since he's human people just believe it to be an inherited name.

It's not. Romulus made some pretty...pretty fucked up choices.

The SOUL curse is a thing too, but its not the lycanthropy that it became in Memory as it currently is. So there's some shit involving that too.

It's a thing that will be a thing as I build the story without all of its crossover elements. I'm not going to write the thing because that is going to be a pain to write that as well ass the crossover original idea that I just want to finish for once. I've settled myself to writing it as it was at first intended, even if I'm not very into the other fandom any more.

Too much baggage. Too much...everything. It'll be a fond memory for me, as the whole series was foundational to me as a child, but. I've long made peace with the fact that I do not feel comfortable writing in that universe anymore. Or talking about it. Or theorizing. Or anything.

It has been...soured.

So! Comic version of Purple Stars which is definitely what I'm calling it will be an eventual thing. :)

Undertale, a game known for its depth, characters, and worldbuilding, a game in which no character in two dimensional and are proven to not be time and time again, has a flat villain whose only motivation is bite bite murder kill kill bite?

Like, Asgore's first mention is from Toriel, who paints him as this literal monster who is only out for blood. It instills this dread in you throughout the game. But, everyone outside the Ruins talks highly of Asgore, as if he were the best, most wonderful person they've ever met! So now you're just confused? Is he good or evil? So when you find him and realize he's a good person who has done evil things, you realize that Toriel knows something the others don't. That being the divorce fghdsak

Papyrus is just the Skelator, funny doofus archetype who is supposed to be over the top dramatic and still fail at every turn no matter how much he learns. You get that impression immediately. While most of that is true, he is far from a doofus. He is probably the smartest person in the Underground (much to the fandom's chagrin). He is just Full Of Love and wants to do right by everyone, which leads him to make really interesting choices.

Sans is just the lazy, laid back supportive but deceptive older brother until you realize he knows about the different timelines, and suddenly he becomes a whole other level of complex.

Undyne is just a murder hobo until you learn that she just loves her friends and loves her neighbors and loves her people with her whole heart and will do anything to keep them safe.

Alphys is just the geek nerd until you learn about her guilt, trauma, and depression.

Toriel is just the tutorial character until you learn her backstory.

Napstablook is socially awkward until you realize their deep loneliness.

Monster Kid is a fanboy (gender neutral) with a deep underlayer of imposter syndrome and inadequacy.

Shyren is just shy

Burger Pants is stuggling hard.

All of the monsters rely on that feeling of hope, and their King's war is based on restoring it.

And last but not least, Flowey was the villain whose only motivation is bite bite murder kill kill bite. HE was the one with 2D motivations, anime speeches about you being weak, talking about being a god, stuff of the like. He is largely written off.

Until you learn his true identity. Learning that Flowey is ASRIEL suddenly gives all of his actions new light. Learning about his lack of a soul, how he tried to do good, but got bored, and he couldn't feel love. He is a reflection of you, the Player, who must be committing Genocide in order to even hear him talk about this. Flowey suddenly becomes one of the most important, deep, and thought-out characters in the game.

and we thought Chara was a 2D villain.
