rewatching the first episode of Hannibal and holy shit I forgot how good this is but it's actually insane that Brian fuller set up the ep like this, he introduces will and Hannibal by first briefly showing them at their core, at the darkest, most vile part of them---we get a glimpse behind the curtain---and then its gone, the curtain is snapped shut and we see their masks, their human suits.

Will empathizes with killers because he likes it, and he wants to kill but he refuses to give into the urge because he knows how much he'll like it and he won't be able to stop. So he lives vicariously through other killers, satisfying his own dark urge by feeding it little morsels of secondhand blood lust. Every crime scene he works gives the urge something that satisfies it, not enough for it to grow, but enough for it be sate. Enough that he can ignore it for long enough that he can walk around and be Professor Will Graham who is Weird, Brash, and Non-sociable.

And Hannibal is a cannibal at night and a psychiatrist by morning.

Sighhh while I love inanimate Insanity I think they struggle with ending seasons. I still don't like episode 18 of s2 or s3.

While not terrible episodes, the episodes before them are so much stronger and set up things that don't go anywhere.

lindas engagement to hugo is just so endlessly fascinating to me like. they were engaged 4.5 days (according to him!! he would have no reason to downplay it!!) and during those 4.5 (four and a half!!!!!!) days she met bob and decided to leave hugo for him. like she was not HAPPY you do not decide in at maximum 4.5 days that you are leaving your fiance for a guy you just met unless you are deeply unsatisfied.

but the kicker is: its linda. linda was engaged to a guy she really did not want to marry! LINDA was going to settle. and that just feels so unlike her!!! shes too in touch with her own emotions, isnt she? shes too good at sticking up for herself, right? shes confident enough to know she can do better! but she was going to marry someone she wasnt happy with. is this only unbelievable now but actually very in character for the person she was back then? was she so desperate to have a family that she’d marry hugo just to have one? WHY was she still in that relationship!!!! thats not a linda thing to do!!! i want all the details!!!!

actually. the specific phrasing that boy Kevin wants to kill older Kevin with "I must disassemble him, piece by piece, so that everything inside of the Old Kevin comes out. Only then can the New Kevin truly begin." is so incredibly the idea that to heal from trauma and "improve" you have to destroy every "wrong" part of yourself, that everything "tainted" by it has to somehow be replaced by something untouched (which isn't possible)
