S2 actually doesn't commit to saying Hextech was inherently bad. It's just Jayce + Viktor who were bad.

Heimerdinger, Ekko, and Jayce muse about the possibility that the Arcane itself is an evil corrupting influence. Then they find the anomaly, and Jayce is whisked away to the torment nexus to stew on this possibility. What does he learn there? Let's ask his flashbacks to find out!

He comes to regret kicking Heimerdinger off the council, and his dream of inventing Hextech altogether. It is only after he dismantles his Hextech hammer - and leaves it behind - that he's able to escape the pit.

I have SO MANY problems with this, but I'm going to stick with one here: the omnipotent, all-powerful, timeline-hopping futureViktor is the one leaving Jayce to suffer and learn this lesson.

When a writer (who is all-knowing) creates an all-knowing character, they give themselves the ability to interact directly with their own story and characters. Jayce supposedly needed to learn that Hextech was bad and was always going to go bad. He is forcibly, tortuously taught by the writers that his dream was wrong from the start.

Sounds pretty cut and dry, right? Hextech is bad. HOWEVER:

At the same time, in the same episode that Jayce is learning this, Heimerdinger enjoys 3 years of peace in a Good AU where he learns that actually magic is okay sometimes, and helps Ekko invent a Hextech device that saves the day. Maybe he should have been a more supportive teacher to Jayce after all!

And yet... Jayce is NEVER corrected on his assumption that s1 Heimerdinger was right. He goes off on his suicidal mission fully believing it, and he dies believing it.

There exists no timeline in which Jayce and Viktor are able to get their shit together without ending the world. It wasn't Hextech = bad. It was Jayce + Viktor = bad.

Maybe Hextech is just fine. As long as someone else invents it.

re - the tags on the misogyny post. To be honest at this point sadly i would rather a Critically Acclaimed Film have No women in it. than like one or two poorly treated women. because the absence is still horrible but less actively upsetting than 'hey we heard you feminists wanted women?? well then have this absolutely vile female character for representation!!' which is basically what happened with that transformers comic to my understanding. LOL?

NO YEAH I totally get that. It's not the exact same thing but I also *really* prefer playing games that let you play as women, because I can't really stand the ones where you both have to play as a dude and the female characters in them are treated poorly/overly objectified. I can tolerate badly written female characters if at least the protag is female, but male protag AND misogyny?...urgh. I can never play Xenoblade Chronicles 2 because of this lmao even tho people say it's good. if there are NO female characters that's a problem but like you said it's much less likely to be actively upsetting.

For more context with that TF comic, basically the writer (Simon Furman) was extremely pissed off at the mere idea of female Transformers, and wrote that comic to ""explain"" Arcee's presence in the Marvel UK run (1989). She was actually first introduced in the animated movie The Transformers The Movie (1986), written in by a guy who pushed for a female transformer because his daughter really loved the cartoon series at the time. So it wasn't even "feminists" asking for a female character, it was a *guy* working for the franchise. (FWIW I also think her characterization in the film is totally fine - her design is eh, but as a character she was inoffensive.)

Simon Furman never learnt from this and somehow got worse, and in 2008 wrote Spotlight: Arcee which described her origin...where she was originally male but made female through forced transitioning, i.e against her will, in an experiment framed as evil. With the implication that no female transformers existed until her forced transition. OBVIOUSLY THIS GOT RETCONNED LATER!!!!!! Both that female transformers always existed and also that Arcee in this continuity DID want to transition/identified as female before what happened to her and was mainly upset about the way the character who performed her transition treated her, not the transition itself. But it's truly incredible that almost *twenty years later* Simon Furman had learnt nothing and wrote something even worse in more than one way.

In terms of women in the franchise in general, it's kind of awkward, because it stems back to Hasbro going "this is a Boy's toy, so you can't have Girl Robots", even though originally they actually wanted to have some. And Arcee, despite being a prominent character in the film and the series after the film came out, never got an official toy/figure made of her until the early 2000s. There are so few female characters that in IDW, their society is written as homonormative when it comes to relationships (I counted over 15 individual "gay" transformers in the IDW comics). IDW kind of made reparations for the Arcee thing by adding Anode and Lug, both MTF robots who were gay for each other (2017), and Arcee started being written as a lesbian as well in the comics (2018). trans transformer yuri ftw

As a new fan, I've found when female characters are portrayed, they're generally portrayed fine (as long as it's not the Michael Bay movies or anything Simon Furman touched lmao). Never anything groundbreaking but I wouldn't say treated badly. One nice aspect is that they usually do not exist to be objectified or as love interests because they can't be sexualized (to an extent) and there is little romance in the franchise besides gay romance in IDW. The fandom isn't as misogynistic as it used to be either, it's actually quite welcoming depending on where you look, tho I do get the vibe overall that the franchise has only started to get genuinely better about this within the last 10 years.

There Y/N was, at the makeup counter. They had been working there for a seasonal job. Yeah, malls are dying a tragic and brutal death but money is money. They barely knew how to use makeup outside of a couple of videos that would pop up on their favorite apps while they searched endlessly for something to do when they're supposed to be doing something actually important (cough). They look over and see a beautiful red-haired woman, her chartreuse eyes glazing over the most expensive thing in the counter. God, Y/N just HAD to talk to her, she was too gorgeous not to! Also their manager was so up their ass about "not talking to customers" and "spending too much time on that damn phone" despite the mall being empty except for the odd mall goths and maybe a birthday party about to ruin a minimum-wage worker's life for a little bit. Not their problem! They walked up to her and smiled.

"Hi there, is there anything I can help you with, miss?"

They asked with a bright smile on their face. She gave them one look before just shaking her head no and going back to what she was doing. Maybe she's just a cute shy girl! They waited for a response

"Oh! So you're looking for foundation, right? The ABH concealer may work well for you? Concealer and foundation are the same thing, anyway." The woman looked at Y/N like they were insane for saying that, though they couldn't help themselves "…I wish I could learn how to do makeup as well as you can… You really know what you're doing!"

The woman was annoyed with them after showing their CLEAR lack of makeup knowledge and being in HER space while she was trying to shoplift shop! It was time to get rid of them for good.

"Maybe that would work for you... And I KNOW! So many wish they could do their face as well as me but a lady never tells her secrets!" Y/N slumped a little bit, she sighed. "Listen, darling. I could!" Y/N's face lit up. "I really wish I could! …But I only do charity-work once a year. Now get out of my sight. You might be one of those cases beyond fixing! Buh-bye!"

She waved them off. Wow… Y/N walked back behind the counter in pitiful defeat. Of course, it was risky to shoot their shot like that but that was worse than a "no". They watched as she "sneakily" shoved foundation, eyeliner, and other beauty products into her purse. Normally, they would try to stop her but they got the memo this time.

They just needed to try again!

tsukasa vs nene- hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby. tsukasa will express surprise at her strength while she struggles to get his arm to budge 💀 the worst part is that he's genuine, he didn't expect to put effort in LMAO. he boasts 'even with more training, ofc u cant beat me 😏', then proceeds to prolong the match by keeping his arm still. she gets so miffed and tries even harder LMAO. she doesn't win though bc tsukasa gets tired and ends it faster than she can process. he brags at the end despite doing nothing

emu vs nene - hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby part 2. emu cheerily confirms that nene did get stronger, and there's only a brief struggle before she pins nene's arm down. she's very encouraging that she hopes nene gets big and buff!!!

rui vs nene- hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby part 3. nene feels like she's pushing against steel. she gets to look as he leans his annoyingly smug face on his other hand, barely breaking out a sweat. he's a mix of emu's genuine encouraging words and tsukasa's irritating lack of response. he wins after she goes 'just end it 😒'

nene's like 'idk what you guys expected....' and sits off to the side. she finds that she enjoys watching the other three arm wrestle rather than doing it herself

The thing is Justified... I know a lot of peeps like it but its not really my jam, but holy hell does Walton steal every scene he's in! Timothy Olyphant is great too, but even if I didn't know how amazing Walton is already as an actor, he really does capture your attention from the off. So that's why I've started watching it anyways 😅

Its also so funny to me Boyd Crowder's supposed to be this big bad antagonist from the off, but so far (as I've watched) what he's done is appear very receptive to Raylan's presence and requests and bascially winds him up a lot! Every time Boyd's showed up in recent eps i've watched he's been like "Raylan, let me bring up your trauma for a second. Do you want to talk about your daddy issues?"

Whilst Raylan shuts him down quickly and Boyd is just like "hmm, do you think your repressing of your emotions is boiling up into a rage and that's why ur so trigger happy, babe? Maybe u should do something about that..." - it's great haha ^^
