Sometimes I want to read my friends' fics bc like... friends! Their fics! But then like... my brain reminds me the only fic I read is dmcl.

The most demoralizing thing as a fan of like. Huge franchise stories that have a million characters and time periods and whatever. Is that it's not even bad in itself to have all this fleshed out world or whatever, and it should be delightful to have characters we love interact. Like! When two protagonists meet from different stories and you're like "I love you both but wow you two are Not Good together" bc they just have such vastly different personalities or whatever, that's the good shit.

But none of what we get in these Media Franchises feels like it's written out of a love for these characters or an attention to what would actually make sense for their arc? It's just "fuckton of characters all know each other because fans like these characters" and then also said fuckton work together primarily instead of ever being at perfectly reasonable odds, or they never get to interact about shared traumas or related backstories they just fight a bad guy and be done with it.

This post is very "tell me you like star wars and marvel without telling me" but. I mean I love having characters from different corners of a universe meet. My OCs run into each other all the time, and pop up in various aus, but that's always with questions in mind: where would they be/who would be here right now available to get involved? What kind of personality conflicts would they have with the other characters/would they actually share the same goals? Do I have something interesting to reveal about these characters by having them interact?

I mean sometimes you have to just sit there and imagine a crack crossover between your own original fantasy and fucking star wars, like I fully support shoehorning people into places for self indulgence, but to make it good writing that anybody else is gonna be moved by you have to pair characters who have something to say to each other. The aforementioned crack crossover is another excuse for me to go off about people being raised as weapons from childhood, like yes it's silly and never gonna see the light of day but I still had something I wanted to explore. I can't imagine writing characters into a story for no reason beyond "people like both of them".

There's not really a point to this except maybe as a plea to any writers reading this, saying please for the love of your own characters have something to say with any sort of crossover type encounter.

two days into the new year, and you were navigating through the bustling airport in los angeles. you'd just returned from a brief trip to england, and while part of you was relieved to be back in your city, surrounded by your friends and the familiar chaos, another part of you couldn’t shake the feeling of wanting to stay longer. you had initially planned for an extra week, but life had a way of pulling you back. dressed in a matching grey tracksuit with the hoodie pulled low over your head, you gripped your phone, pressing it to your ear as it rang, waiting for jj to pick up.

"you here yet?" the mans voice was heard from the other side of the phone. you nodded, fumbling around with something in your bag before you answered. "yeah, landed about a half hour ago," you spoke, weaving through the small crowds of people as you tried to venture toward the airport entrance. "im almost there just hang tight, a'ight?" you hummed, muttering a quiet goodbye before hanging up the phone.

you continued to weave through the tight airport crowds, muttering small apologies when you bumped your shoulder or elbow into someone else. as you rounded a corner into a different hall, you harshly bumped into a younger girl who looked to be around sixteen years old. "oh my- honey im so sorry. are you okay?" you quickly muttered out as you held her hand to pull her back up. however, she didnt seem phased in the slightest, her eyes widening once she realized who you were.

"holy shit. y- youre y/n, right?" she stumbled on her words, smiling even brighter as you nodded your head with a sheepish chuckle. "uhm, sorry. c-can i get a picture, please?" she asked you nervously, constantly glancing between you and her phone as she fumbled around with it. "yeah sure," you smiled, watching as she excitedly passed her phone to her mom who was stood a few feet away, mumbling something about taking a picture.

after taking around three to four pictures, you turned to her again. "you sure you okay?" with concern etched on your face, a small smile still managed to make its way onto your face as you watched her nod profusely. "y-yeah. im okay. uhm, thank you." she smiled at your beofre muttering a quick goodbye, ruhshing away to grab her phone back from her moms grip.

you smiled to yourself, gathering your things once more as you felt your phone vibrate from its place on your backpack. "yeah?" you pressed the phone up to your ear, supporting it with your shoulder as you continued your walk towards the entrance. "im here," jj called through the phone, "lucky for you, its too busy i think you can just come out normally." you let out a small sigh, nodding gratefully. "ill be right out," you stated before hanging up.

“Sure.”

“Okay. Treasure island, treasure island.” As he spoke, Chigiri slowly dragged his finger into a circle against Kunigami’s back. “X marks the spot, X marks the spot..”

It felt tingly, but nothing chilling yet. Kunigami pretended to shiver for Chigiri’s case, getting a light swat from his boyfriend. “Sorry- please, continue.”

“You’re so annoying. Anyway- Dot, dash, Dot, dash.” He poked at the center of Kunigami’s back, following it with a slash across it. The gesture made him squirm some- it wasn’t so much chilling as it was ticklish. He bit his lip to keep from laughing. “Spider’s crawling up your back-Gotcha!”

The puff of air on his neck was bad enough, but then Chigiri started tickling his ribs! Kunigami barked out a cackle before doubling over, laughing helplessly as he tried to shake off the snickery redhead. “Chihihihi! Chhiihihhi, coohohohme ohohohon! Ahehahahaha- Gahhaha dohohoohn’t kihihihiss me thehehehehere!”

“What? Can’t hear you!” Chigiri laughed as he carried on pressing kisses into Kunigami’s neck, burrowing his face into the crook to really reach the sensitive skin. “You’re so cold now, Kunigami! Let me warm you up!”

“Ahahha! Ahahhahhhaha, cohoohome ohohohon! Fihihihine, fihihihine I got the chihihihihlls! I got the chihihihihihills!” Kunigami pleaded, falling flat on his stomach as he squirmed. His laughter quickly caught the attention of the rest of the boys, who all took the executive decision to coo at him.

“Aww, is the hero getting beaten by his princess?” Isagi called out, making his voice extra sappy. The others oo’d and aww’d at them, laughing and calling out something about Kunigami having a soft spot.

“Stoohohohp gahahhahwking and heheheehehlp mehehehehe!” Kunigami called out, flailing an arm for mercy. Bachira, who was always ready to fight- quickly jumped in.

“Nohohoho, not like thahhahahahahahhat!!” Kunigami all but shouted when his legs were grabbed, feet scribbled at by the dribbler’s fast fingers. “Bahahhachira, gehehhet the hehehell ohohohohoff!”

“No, stay like that, Bachira! Keep tickling him!” Chigiri called back, delighted. He was like a cat who finally found his prey. Isagi shuffled over at some point, kneeling beside the open spot along Kunigami’s ribs before gently prodding at him.

“You know- I can’t even count how many times you’ve tickled me, Hero. Talk about an invitation for some well deserved revenge!”

“GEHAHHAHAH ALL OF YOOHOHOHU QUUHUUHIT!” Kunigami howled, face as red as his boyfriend’s hair as he twisted and flailed. “IIHIHIHILL FHAHAHHART ON YOHOHOHOU!”

“Oo, lemme smell it! I’ll guess what you had for lunch.” Bachira giggled in glee, earning a small “Ew! from Chigiri and a snort from Isagi. The threat of a fart made the rest of the boys scatter, diving out of the F-zone.

“IIHIIHIHIM SHEHEHEHHERIOUS! I WIHIIHHILL!” Kunigami cried out, slapping the ground rapidly. It was his signal that he was officially done. Chigiri eased up near immediately, gesturing for the others to do the same. “Eheheheh..hehehehehe..thahahnk you.”

“Heh, yeah no problem! Come on, Bumblebee.” Isagi pulled Bachira with him as they ran, laughing the entire time. Chigiri stayed where he was, laying across Kunigami’s back with a happy sigh.

“You know I really do need to fart.” Kunigami pointed out.

“Not the first time you’ve done so.” Chigiri reminded, too comfortable to move. “I don’t care.”

Kunigami raised a brow over his shoulder. Chigiri looked back at the challenge.

It lasted for exactly five seconds before the redhead dived off him, disgustedly flapping the air back towards Kunigami as the hero laughed and laughed. “You’re so gross!”

“You love me!” Kunigami gasped out, and soon Chigiri was laughing just as much. “My precious ice princess.” “Who are you calling Elsa?” Chigiri tsked, turning away in mock annoyance.

“It’s fine- just know I’m never gonna let you go.” Kunigami scooted him into his arms, pressing Chigiri’s back to his chest and wrapping him in his limbs. His heart was racing- matching the pace of Kunigami’s. How sweet.

Out of curiosity, he leaned in and blew softly into his neck.

“Eek!” Chigiri shooted his shoulders up with a yelp. He flushed near instantly, shivering all over. Kunigami was going to enjoy this.

“Hey, Chi.” Kunigami teased, leaning in so he was right up to his ear. “Bet I can’t give you the chills?”

I know you just had top surgery - how was it? How was the healing process? I’m scared to death of surgery but I desperately need these off

HI NYX!!! ok im gonna try and be as brief and concise as possible because theres honestly quite a lot i could talk about but! heres some thoughts under the cut

so honestly as someone who has had a few surgeries in the past for other medical issues - this ranked VERY low on the pain scale. maybe a 4/10 tops at its worst (although i do understand everyone is different). the surgeon kept telling me "many people do not find this operation particularly painful" and i did not believe him one bit until afterwards. i had prescription pain medicne and antibiotics to take, but honestly i only needed the prescription medicine for about 3 days, and then after that i was fine with tylenol. after a week really i didnt need to take anything consistently, it was here or there if i happened to start moving around too much.

the worst part for me overall was the BANDAGES. after you wake up youre gonna be wrapped within an inch if your life with ike 2 inches of gauze and tape and an ace wrap holding it all together. if you have drains (which i did) you can't shower until they're out and the bandages come off, anywhere from 5 to 7 days usually. mine was 7 days and i was miserable. the drain emptying wasnt that bad tbh, someone helped me the first 2 times and then i was able to do it myself afterwards. if youre bad with blood or bodily fluids then youll def need someone to help you there. the drain removal process, to be completely honest, was. also bad. it lasted maybe five seconds per drain but i didnt breathe right like they told me to and had a vasovagal reaction and passed out. i dont say this to dissuade you! but it was not pleasant

the main thing probably is gonna be stiffness and soreness. you literally won't be able to do anything with your arms for at least a few days - its bordering on 2 weeks for me and im just now able to pull a shirt over my head without stiffness. you DEFINITELY will need someone to help you with basic tasks those first few days, getting food, getting dressed, etc. some ppl get bruising on their chest just from the skin being manipulated and etc but surprisingly i havent had any bruising yet?

also!! again some places differ, but mine was a same day surgery. after a few hours of waking up i was able to be bundled into the car back to the hotel. youre gonna be really groggy but i was able to walk just fine, albeit very slowly with help. the surgery itself was the blink of an eye to me. i remember them putting an o2 mask over my face and then i was OUT. seconds later i was being dragged up out of unconscious well by the nurse's voice.

ill say too, i 100% understand the nervousness and fear. the 2 weeks leading up to the surgery were like. awful andnsnjf. i was so anxious and terrified of the pain only to find it genuinely was not that bad at all. you know the this too shall pass lighter i have. i slept with that clutched in my hand the entire night before surgery. it was very much a "do it scared" situation and having those things of comfort and reassurance whatever they are to you can help immensely. and i did do it! and the relief i felt a week after when i finally got to see made literally all of it worth it. theres still healing to go (i took a month off work also) but im taking it very slowly and trying not to rush enjoyment of this body c: most of the healing process has been letting the body do its natural work and being patient with it, a thing i am usually not. i still have to dress the area for another 2 weeks maybe, but then i can start scar care!!!

Firstly, its important to note how the admins were being held onto an NDA that, apparently, isn't even valid. It's, as far as we know, the only type of paper the employees signed and it isnt even valid.

How does an advanced law student not know how to make a valid NDA?

And if i'ts ony an NDA, than theres no actual document binding the workers and the company. Theres also no legal document laying out what's expected from the company and the workers. Including working regimé and salary. They were working without, legally, being binded to the company.

Secondly, they had to pull of the entirety of the Prision Event in five days. Five days. They did not sleep at the night before Prision's ending because Quackity demanded them to change everything. This sentiment ─ of having to work for many hours and everything being made last minute ─ is a sentiment all ex-workers expressed. Another important thing is that they were contracted to do one thing, and on the end had to take on many many other positions.

The isolation, forbidding and actively making it impossible for the workers to talk among themselves, and especially about payment, is textbook workplace abuse practice. What was QS's intention with this? Making it so they couldn't talk about their situation, so they wouldn't learn about how other workers were being treated differently? So they wouldn't quesion?

Something that just shows more of how abusive the QS's higher up team is was the surveillance and privacy breach. They asked Léa's friends to show their private DM's. Their private conversations. They probably had access to very personal and delicate conversations she had with people that are her friends. And survailling the worker's personal accounts is unfathomable to me. Even more considering how they weren't even representing the company, since no one knew they were working for QS.

About the xenophobia, Léa asked if she could translate Quackity's statement on the subject onto french. But Quackity Studios said it wasn't QS's business.

I repeat, the blatant xenophobia on QSMP's fandom, wasnt considered QS's business.

Neither were the 2 participants expelled from the project for grooming and physical and psychological abuse. Apparently neither the admins or the audience deserved a statement about these topics.

Still about xenophobia, calling the admins' complaint on Quackity's statement xenophobic is such a bad faith argument. They're not complaining about Quackity speaking spanish, they're complaining they had to learn about the state of the company they work with, and, consequentially, their jobs (QSMP was the only form of income for some people) through a livestream in a language they did not understand, at insane hours.

If he could've used the QSMP translators for a hot tub stream, he could've used them for the statement that affected people's lives.

If all that sounds less important than Léa's maybe questionable morality than u don't fucking care about workplace abuse. i feel like this is going to play out very similarly to voice assistants. there was a huge boom in ASR research, the products got a lot of hype, and they actually sold decently (at least alexa did). but 10 years on, they've been a massive failure, costing way more than they ever made back. even if ppl do think chatbot search engines are exciting and cool, it's not going to bring in more users or sell more products, and in the end it will just be a financial loss

ETA: Iater, I found and read this article from Nov 2022, which reports that Alexa and co. still can't turn a profit after many years of trying.

But anyway, yeah... this is why I don't have a strong sense of how widespread/popular these "generative AI" products will be a year or two from now. Or even five years from now.

(Ten years from now? Maybe we can trust the verdict will be in at that point... but the tech landscape of 2033 is going to be so different from ours that the question "did 'generative AI' take off or not?" will no doubt sound quaint and irrelevant.)

Remember when self-driving cars were supposed to be right around the corner? Lots of people took this imminent self-driving future seriously.

And I looked at it, and thought "I don't get it, this problem seems way harder than people are giving it credit for. And these companies show no signs of having discovered some clever proprietary way forward." If people asked me about it, that's what I would say.

But even if I was sure that self-driving cars wouldn't arrive on schedule, that didn't give me much insight into the fate of "self-driving cars," the tech sector meme. It wasn't like there was some specific deadline, and when we crossed it everyone was going to look up and say "oh, I guess that didn't work, time to stop investing."

The influx of capital -- and everything downstream from it, the trusting news stories, the prominence of the "self-driving car future" in the public mind, the seriousness which it was talked about -- these things went on, heedless of anything except their own mysterious internal logic.

They went on until . . . what? The pandemic, probably? I actually still don't know.

Something definitely happened:

In 2018 analysts put the market value of Waymo LLC, then a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., at $175 billion. Its most recent funding round gave the company an estimated valuation of $30 billion, roughly the same as Cruise. Aurora Innovation Inc., a startup co-founded by Chris Urmson, Google’s former autonomous-vehicle chief, has lost more than 85% since last year [i.e. 2021] and is now worth less than $3 billion. This September a leaked memo from Urmson summed up Aurora’s cash-flow struggles and suggested it might have to sell out to a larger company. Many of the industry’s most promising efforts have met the same fate in recent years, including Drive.ai, Voyage, Zoox, and Uber’s self-driving division. “Long term, I think we will have autonomous vehicles that you and I can buy,” says Mike Ramsey, an analyst at market researcher Gartner Inc. “But we’re going to be old.”

Whatever killed the "self-driving car" meme, though, it wasn't some newly definitive article of proof that the underlying ideas were flawed. The ideas never made sense in the first place. The phenomenon was not really about the ideas making sense.

Some investors -- with enough capital, between them, to exert noticable distortionary effects on entire business sectors -- decided that "self-driving cars" were, like, A Thing now. Gig economy delivery apps (Uber Eats, Doordash, etc.) have been ubiquitous for years, and have reported huge losses in every one of those years.

Which brings us to the question - what is the point of all this? These platforms are all losing money. Just think of all the meetings and lines of code and phone calls to make all of these nefarious things happen which just continue to bleed money. Why go through all this trouble?

Grubhub just lost $33 million on $360 million of revenue in Q1.

Doordash reportedly lost an insane $450 million off $900 million in revenue in 2019 (which does make me wonder if my dream of a decentralized network of pizza arbitrageurs does exist).

Uber Eats is Uber's "most profitable division” 😂😂. Uber Eats lost $461 million in Q4 2019 off of revenue of $734 million. Sometimes I need to write this out to remind myself. Uber Eats spent $1.2 billion to make $734 million. In one quarter.

And now, in February 2023?

DoorDash's total orders grew 27% to 467 million in the fourth quarter. That beat Wall Street’s forecast of 459 million, according to analysts polled by FactSet. Fourth quarter revenue jumped 40% to $1.82 billion, also ahead of analysts’ forecast of $1.77 billion.

But profits remain elusive for the 10-year-old company. DoorDash said its net loss widened to $640 million, or $1.65 per share, in the fourth quarter as it expanded into new categories and integrated Wolt into its operations.

Do their investors really believe these companies are going somewhere, and just taking their time to get there? Or is this more like a subsidy? The lost money (a predictable loss in the long term) merely the price paid for a desired good -- for an intoxicating exercise of godlike power, for the chance to reshape reality to one's whims on a large scale -- collapsing the usual boundary between self and outside, dream and reality? "The gig economy is A Thing, now," you say, and wave your hand -- and so it is.

Some people would pay a lot of money to be a god, I would think.

Anyway, "generative AI" is A Thing now. It wasn't A Thing a year ago, but now it is. How long will it remain one? The best I can say is: as long as the gods are feeling it.

EDIT: i've thought about this some more and was Joyboy really someone who would instruct his people to sacrifice themselves for him and his cause? that doesn't sound right. so maybe Emet has something else up his sleeve?

also, Emet is the second person to lose their arm to a snake-like monster while protecting Luffy. both Emet and Shanks were also waiting for the awakening of the Nika fruit to make their move it seems. i wonder if there are any other parallels between them...

They try their best to find something they have in common. I feel like OG Eddie is way to nice to be scared or like grossed out by Opposite, he’d just feel a little bad and wanna be his friend.
