etz hayyim (“tree of life”) synagogue in chania, crete, greece. the building dates to the 14th-15th centuries, and was originally a venetian catholic church. it was acquired by chania's jewish community and converted into a synagogue in the late 17th century. chania's jews were deported due to the holocaust in 1944, after which the building remained abandoned until restoration in the 1990s.
romaniote jews are the oldest jewish community in europe and one of the oldest in the world, thought to have lived in and around present day greece since before 70 ce. they have their own liturgy that is unrelated to the more commonly used european ones (ashkenazic and sephardic).
#greece#architecture#interior#worship#jewish#romaniote#old & new#my posts#for all u Westerners 'rom' = constantinople referring to itself as the roman empire#so rome/italy is like 'west roman' constantinople/greece/anatolia is like 'east roman'#in the west its called 'byzantine' from 'byzantium' (proto-constantinople)#also it insinuates w roman empire was the 'real' roman empire (despite east lasting 1000 years longer)#in most mediterranean & w asian languages greece/greek is 'yunan/yawan/yavan' (from ionians) or 'rum/rom' (from roman)#in actual greek it's 'hellas'/'ellas' (from hellenic)#in georgian it's 'saberdzneti' for some reason but they also have their own names for a bunch of places#'greece' comes from the latin name 'graecia'#in a lot of slavic languages it's some variation of 'greece'. weird considering most were never/hardly under latin influence#if you think this is a lot just wait until u hear about the all the names for armenia#but yeah these guys were also in a lot of the balkans. if you're from the balkans and jewish you MAY have romaniote ancestry#(at least more recent romaniote ancestry than all other european jews)#not a guarantee though especially if you're ashkenazi#theres like. other jewish groups in europe that predated ashkenazi migration#most of them just got absorbed into the ashkenazi population

cannot stop thinking about lupa and juno's reactions to jason's death. god did juno feel it when he died? did she hear his string get cut? did she wail loud enough that all of olympus heard it? what was it like realizing the boy she loved like a son was dead? was was it like watching his father not even shed a tear? was she the one to tell lupa? and on lupa's end, how angry do you think she was? this is her pup. her youngest pup. he was so young when he first started, when juno first gave him to her? he learned how to roughhouse with her packmates. he learned to fly with her! did she snap at juno? did she scream and curse and blame juno? did she howl mournfully?
#these are his moms!!!#not very good ones but his moms nonetheless!!#when he fought krios do you think he heard their voices in his head encouraging him#'victory or death jason' lupa says in head 'die like a roman or don't die at all.' jason picks up his sword again.#krios knock his sword out of his hand and jason bares his teeth. that's okay. he doesn't nned a weapon to fight#he wrestles krios to the floor and the titan's throat is bared and it would quick and simple to rip it out but he hesitates.#normal people dont do that. his head pounds. his lady's voice exhoes in his head 'go for the kill always my champion.'#jason leans down and clamps his teeth around krios' throat and rips it out. the titans gasps pathetically underneath him#it's not enough. he can already see the wound beginning to heal so he digs his fingers into the wound and starts pulling#the neck rips quickly once he gets started and he snaps the spine as he goes. finally with one last tug the head comes clean off.#he stands up from where he's kneeling over the body and picks up the head by its hair turning around to face the legion.#there is ichor staining his mouth golden. it drips onto his armor. he lifts the head up high. the legions stares at him in shock and awe.#they look terrified he notes absently. 'VICTORY FOR ROME!' he shouts and the campers explode into loud cheering.#sorry what the fuck was that#jason grace#juno pjo#lupa pjo#hoo#hera pjo

seems I need to clarify but, yes, I know what Riordan intended to say or do within scene x, y, or z and I know what Riordan intended to achieve with certain plot points, my interpretations are born from how badly he executed it all. hope that helps!
#im not missing the point I promise you dont have to keep coming into my inbox to try and clarify Riordan's intention#I know what he was trying to do#it was just bad lmao#I understand that RR intends New Rome to be a /safe haven/#I can also read into his accidental subtext to know its NOT#I understand that RR was trying to write a bonding moment between Jason and percy in boo#and that Jason was sympathizing with percy in the momet#however the scene was executed so terribly it reads like Jason was just agreeing with percy's worst thoughts lmao

today im thinking about malaria in ancient rome.
about the fact that P. falciparum (the most dangerous kind of malaria) was likely endemic at least from the 2nd century BC onward that Galen said semitertian fevers (P. falciparum infections) were more common in Rome than anywhere else in the Roman Empire that the most severe manifestations of P. falciparum (quotidian fevers + cerebral malaria) were most common in babies and young children, an epidemiological observation that indicates the transmission rate of P. falciparum was extremely high in Rome that Quintus Serenus said there was no Latin word for semitertian fevers (they used a transliteration of the Greek, 'hemitritaeos') because "no one, i think, could have named it in our language and mothers would not have wanted to"
#working on my thesis gonna bring down the mood of the whole department#but i feel like i have to honor them#and the thing about malaria that fucks me up is P. falciparum has been around for tens of thousands of years#its not a disease of agriculture like smallpox or of sanitary issues that come with civilization like typhoid#it predates agriculture its been found in the bodies of mummies from ancient egypt and skeletons from ancient greece and rome#there are species-specific plasmodium parasites for gorrillas chimpanzees and humans#which to me indicates there was a plasmodium parasite for every now lost hominid#malaria is the strongest recent evolutionary pressure on the human genome#upwards of 30% of people in some parts of the world are heterozygous for sickle cell anemia#or heterozygous for SE asian ovalocytosis#thus it was more evolutionarily advantageous for 2-3% of all children to die#so about 30% of people could be protected from severe malaria#these mutations take a long time to evolve. parasites take a long time to evolve#there are people who mourned their infants tens of thousands of years ago in languages we will never know with rituals we will never see#and i cant do anything about any of that but i can keep going to the lab every day and trying my best to figure it out#because so many generations of humans stretching back to before we were human could not

"wheres the cure" "wheres this" "wheres that" rook is a northerner, their worldview is contained to what happens in the north. north doesnt care about the southern nonsense with succession crises in backwater ferelden or who made divine victoria. "why havent they heard about xyz" they were probably 3yrs old. i feel like a lot of this makes sense.
#*#its literally not in their worldview to care about the warden#even if you choose a grey warden background#because the first warden HAAAAAAATES the ferelden wardens#AND there is was a schism#we know this.#what about hawke?#pffbfbfbtbfbbfbftbb come on. why would rook know anything about hawke????????#crows? theyre based in treviso. its literally like. venice compared to rome#and we know (from the comics#sorry you need to do a book review)#but the crows have experienced their own schism and separation#and treia and viago are doing things differently LOL#mourn watch? theyre not involved in politics technically. theyre more neutral than wardens#lords of fortune? in the title. treasure hunters.#shadow dragons? based pretty much SOLELY in minrathous and/or tevinter so like. anyone below minrathous is a blip#skdjfhskdfhsdkfj. anyway

#the tiny house i based my own blue print off of is for sale at 110000 across the country#if my ass weren't broke id hop on that and drive all the way over to get it#but also 110k for a tiny house on wheels is pretty outrageous especially when these things were originally marked at a cap of 65k#once upon a year now no one can afford them#i do want a home someday and I'm also finding I'm nomadic by nature#dream would be have a “home base” with land thats permanent#but as soon as winter comes i can pack up and move south or wherever is warmer for several months before returning#that would be great for minimizing fibro flares getting away from the cold#heck if remote work ends up getting me good money after i pay off a huge chunk of medical debt i wouldn't mind#being a digital nomad for a few months out of the year#go see people i like across the pond see pompeii see rome see ireland see spain see australia see japan#so many....#theres people that want to hear the pitter patter of tiny feet before they die#then theres me that wants to see all the cool ancient human things before it disappears or before i leave earth and go home#one of the few big fears i have is it wont happen in this life#but hey i didnt think i was gonna make it past 23 let alone make it to 32#i didnt think i was ever gonna get out of my abusive household and out of my old shitty life#but im here so who knows what could happen right?#not magenta or fuchsia but some other pink variation#i just need to roll out a pink color palette and start assigning emotions to them at this point 😂#magenta is my vent word#fuchsia is my vent word for good things#idk wtf this is its a combo

We're having kebabs tonight so grandma will too, i wonder what she'll think lol
#context: she is 93#and i think the last time she had “foreign” food it was when she moved here from her old town and had to be subjected to rome's cuisine on#occasions#anyways theres nothing she doesnt like on its own into the kebab so it should be fine#come to think of it i thiiiiiiinl she went to a japanese restaurant once with my cousin? cause he had A Phase™ and was awfully obnoxious#about it?#anyways bet you that shell think the kebab is my idea even tho it was mum's cause we were all busy and fridge's empty#on this topic I NEED DUMPLINGS SHOT INTO MY VEINS with this grandma at home business we havent been heating out/ordering in that much or#at all#which on the one hand is nice#but on the other hand WHERE ARE MY BAOZI I NEED BAOZI TO LIVE#T_T#also the sushi cravings are real#i stare at my soy sauce bottle wishing i actually knew how to stir fry and not ruin the food#also also i lack 100% foresight why is it that i never have rice when i want to eat it#0/10 awful at meal prep#its just that me vs mom vs dad vs grandma are all used to eating vastly different foods sometimes its kinda funny

I see your dog-coded Agrippa and Cassius, but what about Crassus ? Kind of like feral dog coded
for me, Crassus skips the dog coding allegations on account of no one being able to put a leash on him, and there's no person he seems to be singularly devoted to in a way that dictates his actions
Dating The Praetorship of Marcus Licinius Crassus, Martin Stone
like, there's Sulla, but Crassus also did a lot of that of his own accord, and Sulla shut the door on him politically so Crassus climbed in through a window and worked a different aspect of Roman society-politics with magnificent skill. he ALSO skips the dog allegations because if anyone is bringing someone to heel, it's Crassus doing it to other people. there isn't a specific person that Crassus' actions can be dedicated to in a way that makes me think of a dog the way Agrippa's actions for Octavian do.
I also don't think he's feral! what he is: really fucking ruthless, or has the potential for ruthlessness, which isn't the same thing to me as being feral. and being ruthless is not uncommon for Late Republic politics
Lucullus: A Life, Arthur Keavney
but its that pivot point between being firm, ruthless, and likeable that makes him interesting. he's actually. he's--
okay, so in my mind, he's Machiavelli Prince coded. there are only two Romans I have ever made a compare and contrast analysis using Machiavelli's Il Principe, one is Augustus, the other is Crassus. and for once my connect the dots of thematic tomfoolery has something I can cite, someone ELSE has also made a comparison to Augustus
Dating The Praetorship of Marcus Licinius Crassus, Martin Stone
#anyone here watch devil judge. crassus is like. more yo-han coded to me. in terms of themes and ruthlessness#you try to put him down at your own risk. with crassus tho its like. no roman could do it so ofc he had to meet his end outside of rome#...on the other hand. i respect yo-han and what he's doing as a whole. you guys ever watch yakuza films? crassus would fit in#SO well as a character in a yakuza film. or a 90s HK gangster narrative#if this was a filipino drama i'd want jake cuenca to play him#i also dont know if i'd call cassius dog coded. he really only comes to heel for brutus during the last few years of their shared lives#he is definitively gladiator coded to brutus' statesman tho#i dont often look at characters/figures and go 'oh. dog for sure.' but when i do its like. oh wow okay guys#like octavius wanting to die with crassus? not dog coded. that's just. devoted. devotion. that's love. that's grief. loyalty.#there's no greater love than to lay down one's life for a friend. there's no greater devotion than to die with your general#ask tag

I really wish that percy would have been left in camp jupiter for long enough for it to have meant something to the story
#seriously he was there for a WEEK#why not play on his fatal flaw and have him integrate and forge unshakeable bonds with the roman demigods#in my ideal world percy was in new rome for 5 years fuck you#he also doesnt get his memories back until he literally sees the ship decending and then they still dont feel like theyre his#its like a story where the characters have come to life#pjo#percy jackson#ik it would have been too much of a jump in the books but it felt so meaningless#all that came out of SoN is percy is friends with hazel and frank now!#which is good but like imagine if they actually new each other for more than a WEEK when they go on the argo
