hi, what horror podcasts would u recommend?? ive only listened to a couple and its been rly hit-or-miss for me, but im in a mood for horror so if u could point me to any good ones i'd rly appreciate it!!
I sure can! There are so, so many amazing horror podcasts out there and I won’t even try to tell you about all the ones I love, but here's a selection.
I Am In Eskew is one of the few shows that like ... genuinely disturbs me every time I listen to it, and yet at the same time it’s so poetically beautiful that it takes my breath away. It’s about a man trapped in a surreal, Escherian city where the rain never stops, and the detective who is trying to find him. And it is a terrifying work of art that I simply cannot describe in any way that will do it justice. If you want something with Lynch or Mieville vibes go for this. (Note that they don’t provide content warnings and this show goes hard.)
The Magnus Archives starts out as a simple horror anthology series, framed as recordings of personal statements detailing encounters with the supernatural, drawn from the archives of the paranormal research organization The Magnus Institute. However, as the new archival staff record and investigate these statements, a disturbing pattern begins to emerge -- and the more they start to notice the bigger picture, the more the bigger picture starts to notice them. (In other words: come for the phenomenal standalone stories, stay because you’ve gotten caught up in the slowly and magnificently unfurled metaplot and now you’re very invested in all these characters and have covered a wall in scribbled notes and red string.)
Archive 81 is about a man who has gone missing after taking a job curating an archive of taped interviews with the tenants of an apartment building where something is terribly wrong ... at least at first, because this show is one hell of a wild ride through disturbing arcane rituals and otherworldly landscapes of hostile thought and sound and dreams. Aside from stellar writing and acting, the big standout thing on this show is that the sound designer Dan Powell is just simply a genius. This show’s sound editing is gorgeous to the point of being almost visual and also just absolutely horrifying. (He’s also a musician and the music is also incredible.)
The Blood Crow Stories is the horror podcast for everybody who is into this medium for the gay. You want a boat full of rich people trying to escape WWI being stalked by a heart-devouring monster? You want a Western horror-mystery featuring lesbian sheriffs, bisexual outlaws, gay gunslingers, and a whole lot of murder? How about a cyberpunk thriller about a 911 operator who is targeted by terrifying phone calls from actual demons? It’s all right here and it comes with the best bloopers of any podcast I know & some really fabulous tunes. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You will get “Pretty Lavinia” stuck in your head.
Janus Descending is a really phenomenal limited-run scifi horror miniseries that just finished a few days ago and man does it deserve more attention. Peter and Chel are sent to investigate the ruins of an alien civilization on a distant planet ripe for development, only to discover that not everything under the surface is as dead as they thought. The story is told from both characters’ perspectives, but with a twist -- while you hear Chel’s log entries in sequence, Peter’s side of the story unfurls in reverse chronological order.
Station Blue is about Matthew, a man who accepts a job offer that requires him to spend several months in total isolation at a remote research station in Antarctica. Very much a slow-burn psychological scare, this one keeps its unnatural elements subtle for now, and instead derives its horror from the protagonist’s isolation and introspection. While all of these shows obviously have disturbing/potentially triggering elements I do want to note that Station Blue draws a lot on the creator’s experiences with mental illness and can get pretty heavy.

Fun stuff to do while self-isolating
Websites:
1. Flight Rising - A cute dragon breeding browser game, good for 15-30 minutes of entertainment.
2. Kiss Anime, Kiss Cartoon, Kiss Comics - Free anime, cartoons and comics available for binging. USE AD BLOCK and antivirus when browsing through these websites, otherwise, pop-ups and ads will be unbearable. No links provided because these websites change domains and URLs often.
3. TV Tropes - I can get lost on this website for hours reading about the tropes and plot points my favorite media use. I recommend this especially for writers or people interested in fiction.
4. Bored Button - Randomly sends you to interactive websites, great for relieving a couple of minutes or to laugh at something silly, like a website that allows you to slap Captain Kirk.
5. Archive of Our Own and Fanfiction.net - These are the giants of the fanfiction writing community and are home to a vast collection of stories about your favorite characters.
6. Goodreads - This is a good place to go to find book recommendations, make lists of what you want to read, and keep track of reading goals.
Youtube Channels:
1. Jessica Kellgren-Fozard - A 50s aesthetic combined with educational videos about disability. Jessica has a lovely personality and has served as a well-loved voice of the spoonie community.
2. Acoustic Trench - Videos of Acoustic music featuring a golden retriever, what’s not to like?
3. Rare Earth - This channel explores the lesser-known stories of people all around the world.

2. Outer Worlds - This game is brought to you by the studio that made Fallout: New Vegas. This game is beautiful and has a complex interesting storyline. All of the companion characters are well written and likable (One of which is an ace lesbian!). This game is available on the PC, Playstation, and X Box. It’s more expensive than the previous game on this list but it more than deserves the triple-A price tag of $59.99
3. Night in the Woods - This game is much more story-based than the other games on this list. The plot is wonderful and grapples with issues of mental illness and young adulthood. The price sits somewhere in the middle of #1 and #2 in this list at $19.99 and is available on PC, Mac, Linux, and Playstation 4.
4. Undertale - This is one of those games that needs no introduction. It’s a quirky pixel RPG with moral choices that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Undertale costs around $10 and is available on the Nintendo Switch, PC, and Playstation 4
5. Runescape - This is one of the oldest MMORPGs out on the market and is free to play. Runescape has an engaging crafting system and a wide variety of fun quests. In December 2014, a tractor-trailer traveling down Interstate 71 in Ohio struck and killed Leelah Alcorn.
Alcorn, who discovered as transgender, had posted a suicide be aware on her Tumblr in which she described her isolation, desperation, and depression—feelings she blamed, in aspect, on the “conversion therapy” her conservative Christian mothers and fathers pressured her to go through. Alcorn’s mothers and fathers considered their “sick” boy or girl could be forcibly turned back into a boy and “cured” of her attraction to males.
Alcorn’s dying induced international media notice. A very little additional than a few months afterwards, President Obama named for an conclude to conversion remedy and the White House issued a assertion saying conversion remedy was perhaps devastating to transgender, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and queer (LGBTQ) young individuals.
Because then legislation has been introduced in a lot of states across the nation to ban the practice. Thirteen states and Washington, D.C., by now have rules or restrictions protecting minors from conversion remedy, also regarded as “reparative” and “ex-gay” remedy, and a motion is underway for a national ban.
Statistics about conversion remedy in the United States
The Unsafe Consequences of Conversion Therapy
Discredited by the mainstream mental well being community, which includes the American Counseling Affiliation, American Psychological Affiliation, and American Psychiatric Affiliation, conversion remedy is viewed as ineffective, unscientific, and harmful.
“It’s seeking to modify the essence of the particular person,” said Dr. Joy Whitman, a accredited specialist counselor with skills on LGBTQ concerns and core college member in the on the internet Learn of Arts in Counseling Program at The Relatives Institute at Northwestern University. “We know that sexual orientation can be fluid. But it’s the coercion to modify that is the unsafe mother nature of it. The standard interaction is that there is some thing erroneous with you if you are similar-sexual intercourse captivated.”
In a aspect for Counseling Now co-authored by Dr. Whitman, the authors be aware that there is “no scientific evidence published in psychological peer-reviewed journals that conversion remedy is effective” and no “longitudinal scientific studies carried out to comply with the outcomes for these people who have engaged in this variety of remedy.”
On the other hand, they point out that study continually demonstrates the unsafe consequences of the practice. Conversion remedy thwarts self-acceptance, resulting in depression, anxiety, disgrace, self-hatred, social withdrawal and, like Alcorn, views of suicide.
“There’s a disaster of identities which is concerned below for consumers and a probable decline of relatives. And there is a deep perception of disgrace born from religion, culture, the academic and authorized units, and the mental well being units,” mentioned Dr. Whitman. “Especially for children, there is a perception of failure in not currently being equipped to modify that can lead to a decline of community and disconnect from relatives.”
Getting not able to integrate their spiritual faith and sexual id can lead to isolation, engagement in reverse-sexual intercourse actions as a way to assert a sexual id, and intimacy concerns. Dr. Whitman warns that without having aid units to communicate about security, adolescents who develop up in these environments might interact in dangerous behaviors these as material use. There is a documented probable for hurt by participating in the practice.
“It’s like declaring a remaining-handed particular person ought to be right-handed. Getting remaining-handed is not a illness,” said Scott Leibowitz, a boy or girl and adolescent psychiatrist and health care director of behavioral well being for Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Thrive gender and sexual intercourse improvement application.
“You’re having a non-pathological entity and making use of a non-evidence-based intervention without having contemplating the hurt you are executing along the way.”
A Disgrace-Primarily based Apply
But some mental well being gurus aligned with conservative religious teams continue trying to transform gay and transgender individuals. And as bans on this practice obtain traction amid the broader cultural change embracing the LGBTQ community, professional-conversion remedy groups—and the conservative religious teams that aid them—seem to be pushing back.
A new report by the Williams Institute at the UCLA University of Legislation initiatives seventy seven,000 LGBT youth will go through conversion attempts before they develop into grown ups. A lot more troubling, a lot of of the mental well being practitioners trying to “convert” their clients keep specialist licenses, and conversion remedy for minors is even now authorized in the greater part of states. (In fact, some proponents of banning conversion remedy say the rules ought to characterize the practice as fraudulent. At this time, bans only use to accredited therapies.)
The perception that LGBTQ individuals can be converted has roots in a rift that stretches back almost fifty years. Soon after protests by gay teams outside its yearly conventions, the American Psychiatric Affiliation reviewed its place that homosexuality ought to be handled as a psychiatric ailment. In 1973, it taken off homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Guide of Psychological Issues, declaring it was no more time a sociopathic personality ailment. Two years afterwards, the American Psychological Affiliation agreed.
“Psychoanalysis was deservedly tarred with an antigay brush thanks to its pathologization of homosexuality and continued resistance to modify until finally decades after the American Psychiatric Affiliation and the American Psychological Affiliation transformed in the seventies,” said Jack Drescher, a New York psychiatrist and creator of  Psychoanalytic Therapy and the Gay Man. “I think all the professions have performed a turnaround so I do not know if their reputations even now suffer from that background.”
But the practice is even now alive, if additional complicated to recognize. Industry experts who interact in the practice often espouse “reparative therapy” and endeavor to distinguish it from conversion remedy.
“Over time, clinicians are not essentially defining on their own as conversion therapists. It’s additional delicate and it’s develop into additional deceptive and unsafe,” mentioned Leibowitz, who was not referring precisely to any just one clinic or therapist. “These names of clinics seem highly regarded, and the family members and youth are the unfortunate victims. They do not know the stance of the clinicians, or the simple fact that the stance goes in opposition to specialist ethical criteria, which in my viewpoint is an abuse of electricity.”
Dr. Whitman discussed how it can work.
“If I come to you and I say that I’m having difficulties with my sexual id and my religious beliefs, some therapists say that they will help you with that conflict in a way the place they can lower your worry around your sexual orientation,” she discussed. “So they could interact in some solutions that might not be precisely conversion remedy, but they might be reorienting you.”
There is considerably less emphasis on modifying the id and additional on redirecting the actions and attraction, Dr. Whitman additional. Both equally methods are basically the similar, with a slight variance in the emphasis on actions recognizing that the orientation is considerably less malleable.
Regardless of whether or not it is referred to conversion remedy, reparative remedy or reorientation, a lot of mental well being practitioners argue that the practice commences from the erroneous place, the place a clinician enters into the work with a mounted assumption about the challenges the particular person faces and what the outcome ought to be.
“I glimpse at the particular person as a blank slate,” Leibowitz mentioned. “If I solution a particular person with depression under the perception that there is just one component of them that desires to be transformed in buy to help handle their mood, I could be missing some thing else very significant that truly desires to be addressed.”
Therapeutic from Harm
An approximated 698,000 People in america have undergone conversion remedy, according to the Williams Institute, which suggests there are perhaps hundreds of thousands of individuals weakened by the practice—many of whom have sought specialist help to unravel the hurt.
In the early years of his practice in the late nineteen eighties and early 1990s, Drescher noticed a variety of gay men whose preceding therapists had attempted to modify their sexual orientation.
“The guidance on dealing with that is intricate as there are a lot of different good reasons individuals sought to modify, a lot of forms of therapists who attempted to modify them, and a lot of different outcomes,” Drescher mentioned.
According to Dr. Whitman, a good position to start is to reestablish have faith in with a customer searching for counseling.
“I have to keep in mind that the very occupation that I signify has betrayed them. They attempted to get help from individuals that they considered were healers, so I’m very mindful that I will have to work hard to enable them know that our work collectively will be supportive and that I want to fully grasp the conflicts that they have,” she mentioned. “My function with them is not to try out to convince them to be something, but to help them uncover and find who they are.”
Dr. Whitman observed much of her counseling work in this realm has concentrated on normalizing similar-sexual intercourse attraction by breaking down myths and misconceptions about what it suggests to be similar-sexual intercourse captivated. Numerous individuals who attended conversion remedy were explained to they could not have a standard lifetime if they acted on their attractions.
Dr. Whitman mentioned it is significant to take a look at their dreams and aspirations and to present them their spiritual and sexual identities can exist collectively in a healthier, functioning way. Aspect of that might be helping them uncover faith-based communities that will aid their sexual identities.
“In the previous the place these identities the place dichotomized, I want to help them uncover a way to be entire,” Dr. Whitman mentioned.
Methods that counselors can help an LGBTQ particular person
She additional that relatives users might also advantage from counseling.
“Families have their individual dreams, anticipations, and hopes for their relatives users and their kids,” Dr. Whitman mentioned. “You want to help them grieve the decline of the boy or girl that they considered they had and, rather, help them see the boy or girl that they do have.”
In addition to addressing their misconceptions about similar-sexual intercourse attraction, relatives users and mothers and fathers might also advantage from connecting with other mothers and fathers and family members who have come from a better position of affirmation, Dr. Whitman observed. Getting aid teams to lean on can help mothers and fathers deal with their individual unresolved inner thoughts.
Whilst some in the mental well being and religious communities will continue to drive this unsafe practice, the mental well being community, general, has evolved and proceeds to evolve. With additional education and learning and instruction for mental well being vendors, Dr. Whitman believes the escalating recognition of variety along the spectrum of sexuality and gender will help stomp out the practice.
“There are some individuals that will by no means modify their thinking and so for us our work is to go to these on the fence and to help them see the hurt of seeking to modify somebody’s basic essence and to practice them in affirmative methods.”
