"THE DICTATORSHIP OF THE TRUTH" MEETS THE UNREST OF 1950s ALGERIA.
FILM: "The Battle of Algiers" (1966) -
CINEMATOGRAPHY: Marcello Gatti
DIRECTOR: Gillo Pontecorvo
SCREENPLAY: Franco Solinas
EDWARD SAID (Film Society of the Lincoln Center): "When you made the film, the Algerian revolution had already won. Did you want to tell both sides of the story or were you mainly interested in telling the Algerian side? What was your feeling about portraying this historical process?
GILLO PONTECORVO (Italian writer/film director): "I was mainly interested in showing this unstoppable process of liberation, not only in Algeria, but throughout the entire world. Naturally, in dealing with such a dramatic history, you must show how difficult the situation is for both sides."

A career ending performance? STROMBOLI (1950), tonight at 1:15 AM on #TCM. This is the first collaboration between #StaroftheMonth Ingrid Bergman & Roberto Rossellini - Bergman eventually left her husband for the Italian director. #stayuplate #italianneorealism The island looks pretty grim in the movie but my friend @bobbykellyvintage assures me that it’s beautiful. https://www.instagram.com/p/CXOZsYEg4r3/?utm_medium=tumblr

In this amazing film a personal tragedy pushes socialite Irene (Ingrid Bergman) on a journey which initially challenges her self centered bourgeois lifestyle and ends with her developing such sacrificial love for the poor that her family think she has gone mad. A communist friend triggers the direction of her journey but it is Christianity that ultimately drives it  - not the hypocrisy she finds in organised religion but the genuinely unconditional love we find in Christ. In lesser hands this could have been mawkish, but Rossellini's beautiful camera work and Bergman's senstive acting make it powerfully moving. It is also challenging however - especially perhaps for Christians like me who realise that we go nowhere near far enough in obeying Christ's command to "love our neighbours" and that part of our reticence is a fear of being thought to have gone 'too far' and of being considered, if not mad like Bergman, at least weird or odd. Europe ’51 (1952) is my 899th watch from 1001MYMSBYD and my favourite one for quite a while. . . . . . . #europa51 #rossellini #robertorossellini #ingridbergman #neorealism #italianneorealism #christian #communism #communist #christianity #religion #sacrificiallove #unconditionallove #1001movies #1001moviesyoumustseebeforeyoudie #cinephile #cineaste #cinephilecommunity #cinéaste https://www.instagram.com/p/CSRCOgqsyuV/?utm_medium=tumblr

"What I mean is you're not interested only in the story and the characters in the foreground...There's always something happening on different levels on the screen. You're always telling us something about other people, the people in the background, at the same time, and making a comment on the scene, and telling us about the weather and the time of day, and working at the mood you want us to feel." Bresach to Delaney Two Weeks in Another Town by Irwin Shaw http://www.amazon.com/Weeks-Another-Town-Irwin-Shaw/dp/0440191769 In a way, this passage sums up a major characteristic of the Italian Neorealism movement and what the writer in the story describes is, in my view, the fundamental challenge faced by every film director. #irwinshaw #film #movies #italianneorealism #novel #amazonbooks https://www.instagram.com/n3actes/p/BuygPt6F0x6/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1pfgk7fnv956e

With Cinematography under attack this week with the Oscar decision, I want to highlight a film that will hopefully win the award, even though I guess we won't see it, Roma, for this Film Friday.⠀ ⠀ #roma #alfonsocuaron #blackandwhite #cinematography #oscarssowhite #filmfriday #Italianneorealism #netflix⠀ ⠀ This film reminds viewers that you don't need flashy colors or snappy dialogue to have a brilliant film. Harking back to the Italian neorealistic style, @alfonsocuaron crafts an emotional, human story that will keep you captivated. The cinematography is subtle, beautifully framed, and has those long, incredible takes Cuaron is so great at. Cuaron is reminding audiences and filmmakers what the craft of filmmaking is really about, as even The Academy has seemed to forgotten. Watch it on Netflix! https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt50P5-BO0T/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1pxyzxqh4ct6z

Ingrid Bergman having a revelation. . I am not a fan of movies where the lead character makes a rash decision early on in the film and then whines and moans for the duration of the story about the situation they’ve got themselves in. That’s Rossellini’s 1950 Stromboli in a nut shell. Once I finished the film I decided I didn’t enjoy it and it took a 1963 French television series called, Roberto Rossellini Presents to change my mind. In it Rossellini states, ‘Although it’s not a war film it’s about a character who’s made it through the war. She’s extremely cynical and tries to solve life’s problems using the techniques she learned during the war to survive, to shield herself. At a certain point this character finds herself trapped within her own strategies that she has absolutely no chance of escape. Finally, in the end, when she realizes she can’t escape the situation, she’s does an extremely human and humble thing: she begins to ask for mercy. That’s the whole story.’ Magically, after that moment, the whole movie came into focus and I realized the reason I disliked the main character was because we’re more similar than I care to admit. #stromboli #robertorossellini #ingridbergman #whatmystery #whatbeauty #Italianneorealism #italianfilm #janusfilms #criterioncollection #1950 https://www.instagram.com/p/Bd6ihTuBHzf/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1fkpsfibu3vyk
