It's kinda shocking to me how few people seem to know how prevalent the 'my great grandmother was cherokee' myth is and how it's almost never actually true, especially when it comes with things like 'never signed up' or 'fell off the trail' or 'courthouse burned down destorying the documentation' etc etc.

People just don't even seem to know the history like.. when the Trail happened. My great great great grandfather was 2 years old during Removal in 1838, so peoples 'my great grandmother hid in the mountains!' is so clearly wrong. And we have rolls. From before and after removal, rolls done by cherokee nation and others by the government, rolls that were not stored in one random flammable courthouse. It's not difficult to find the actual evidence of ancestry.

And just.. there are lots of ways those family stories get started. It was a practice during the confederacy to claim cherokee ancestry to show one's family had 'deep roots in the south' that they were there before the cherokee were removed. Many people pretended to be cherokee and applied for the Guion-Miller payout just to try to steal money meant for cherokees - 2/3rds of the applicants were denied for having 0 proof of actual cherokee ancestry. [We even see lawyers advertising signing up for the Miller roll just to try to get free money.] And the myth even started in some families in the cherokee land lotteries, where the land stolen from us was raffled off, including the house and everything that was left behind when the cherokees were removed. We have seen people whose families just take these things stolen from the cherokee family and adopt them into their own family story, saying that they were cherokee themselves.

If you had some family story about being cherokee and you wanna have proof one way or the other, check out this Facebook group run by expert cherokee genealogists that do research for free. Just please read the rules fully and respect the researchers. They run thousands of people's ancestries a year and their average is only around 0.7% of lines they run actually end up having true cherokee ancestry.

#and ive heard even dumber origins of the cherokee family myth #such as an ancestor having a silly sounding name so the descendents just go 'oh she mustve been an indian!!!'#i was one of the few people who had my ancestry done on the facebook and had genuine cherokee ancestry #[though i had found it before it was just really validating to get it double checked and i started finding cousins (:]#like. i was told once when i was a kid by my grandma that my dad had cherokee ancestry and i didnt believe her. its wild that so many peopl #will make it a Fixture of their identity [or even just smth they bring up ever] with Zero proof #at least for cherokees from what ive seen its usually considered really disrespectful to claim to have cherokee ancestry without #actually having the documentation [like ancestors on the rolls]#and no a dna test doesnt count. nor does 'my dad is Clearly not white!' or 'high cheekbones' or old family photos or anything #i had this discussion with someone recently whose dad had been calling himself 3/4 native but didnt know exactly what nation ???? hello?#and its like... sorry but ur dad is like. italian lol.#[and blood quantum is bullshit anyway im tired of the 'im 1/16 cherokee' comments its dumb #cherokee nation does not have a blood quantum requirement. its pointless bringing it up in the discussion of who is or isnt cherokee]#also mandatory disclaimer that im reconnecting. i didnt grow up connected to the culture of even knowing my ancestry #this is all from my looking into this stuff over the past year or so. i cant claim to be an authority over anything regarding this #this is p much all my repeating things ive heard said by people who know a lot more than i do haha #man. and this isnt even starting to get into the fake tribe stuff. the only legit cherokee groups are the 3 federally recognized bands #cherokee nation of oklahoma. united keetoowah band. and the eastern band of cherokee indians.#any others that are state recognized or not at all arent acknowledged as legitimate by any of the legit cherokee groups #anyway. my final message goodb.ye #cherokee #tsalagi

there's too many stitches so i cant stretch it out properly, and the construction makes it hard to really show it off. also im in bed so it's the best i can do right now.

anyhow this is clue 1 of Stephen West's Go Go Dynamo MKAL, which im two weeks behind on but it's fine. it's been fun so far, minus the 'bubbles', which are the bane of my existence.

really need to legally change my name at some point but i just really really hate paperwork and struggle to get started on it especially if it has multiple steps

#it's been literal years and like i send like 2 email enquiries but didn’t really get the answer i need and then i gave up lol #it's just bc it doesn't affect my day to day life but also once i change my name i need a new passport asap but i can probably only change #my name by being physically in the Netherlands and then I'd have to wait for the passport to get back home to the UK... and like i only hav #20 holidays a year and am not allowed to work from home really or maybe 2 days a week now so like #also i have to use 3 of the holidays for the time the company closes around Christmas #so yeah ig next year i could take all of my holidays to be in the Netherlands for almost 4 weeks and hope thatll be enoug #but that's all my holidays and i can't take unpaid holidays #maybe another way is possible but i can't find anything bc trans people living abroad needing to change their names is kinda niche ig #also once i change my name i have to change my name on like my bank card and everywhere else and idk how to do that etc bc i won't be a #british person doing it so it will be different #honestly never changing my name is just so tempting #but you know it would be good to be able to be stealth #*sent sorry #i always make this mistake even though i know how to do it correctly

just a few little bits from the past few days

#both the word count screenshots are from the same day - just different sections of the text. so that was like 4000 words in #one DAY.. huzzah!! (< making up for the fact that I did 0 words the 3 days before that lol.. so its not actually an accomplishment ghjjh)#In renpy I think you can have multiple separate texty cody whatever documents and still jump between them so long as they;re #labeled properly. Rather than like... having one extremely long 60.000 line file where in some places youre in a menu within a menu #within a menu within a menu within a menu within a menu within a menu jhbhj #But that was the way I started doing it lke 5 years ago when I actually made the base of everything so I feel like it'd be too much #work to change it all that dramatically now. But that means I cant just get the word count for the whole document I just have #to jump around to the few sections I worked on and highlight them to get the word count for only that portion #.. the one tiny fraction of the whole monster text wall. Though it is of course spaced out and organized into #clearly labeled sections within that because otherwise I have trouble discerning text on a screen. still.#Resuming a project that's been basically abandoned for 4-5 ish years is just always finding weird stuff like.. why did I do this that way..#why did I write that... why did I organize that in this manner... what the hell am I referencing in this note... etc. lol #Anyway... also......................cat with plum on his head.#everyone point and laugh at mr. plum head boy..!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:3c #I've been obsessed with Calico Critters' social media presence from afar (like how I mentioned one of my possible dream jobs would #be to be the person that sets the scenes and arranges all the toy animals at a tiny little table and etc. to take the type of pictures they #post on their facebook page and stuff) and I see all their photos of them posing the rabbits as if they're in a swimming pool #or on a nature hike or etc. etc. BUT I have never really seen them in person. Recently I was at a store (in a KN95 mask and not staying #very long still of course. wastewater covid levels are still high where I live (and most of the US truly)) and it just crossed my mind #to actually go to the toy section and see if I could find any....wow.... Its like meeting a celebrity.. the Latte Cats....#Of course I didnt buy them because they're like... very expensive?? like $25 - $40 just for one little pack of a few critters like #what is shown. but.... #keese draws #oc art #oc #ocs #seth my beloved <3 #fun fact! he’s very likely my oldest currently used oc #I’m pretty sure I made the rest of the magic cat world for him and if that’s true then he’s at least older than the magic cat world #and he’s also older than eternal gales so that’s another batch of main ocs that he is older than #the only real competition is lace since she’s also super old but alas I have no way of knowing how old she is #she could easily be older than seth but even if she is she’s only been like a real oc for the past few months lol #she was originally just another one off story concept I was obsessed with for like a month and then kinda dropped #I say kinda because she’s probably the only story from that era that managed to resurface every now and then #like it is legitimately quite impressive that she’s from that era and yet managed to be named and remembered for years to come #like I need to make clear I did not name characters very often back then and when I did I usually forgot their names within the day #my memory Sucked back then even more so than it does now #the fact that I can remember as much as I do abt lace in her original form is baffling to me #but still she did go into slumber for like 4-7 years so she doesn’t have the history that seth has to me #the biggest thing I mourn is that I don’t have the original art of seth anymore and haven’t for years #I originally got him from a scratch dta and the host project has been deleted #chances are the original designer doesn’t have the original drawing anymore either 😔#I probably had it downloaded on my school laptop at the time but I obviously can’t access that anymore #idk maybe I imported it onto one of the other projects I drew seth in #I should go look later just to make sure even tho I’m pretty sure they won’t be there
