I had to reblog the post where Caesar was killed with cardboard tubes immediately. It made me smile because when I killed Caesar, we killed him with balloons.

Let me back up a moment.

In my senior year of high school, before tumblr was a twinkle in someone’s eye, we killed Caesar - a beloved English and humanities teacher. He also ran a literary magazine for our school, and each year they would put on Shakespeare in the Park to promote and raise funds for that magazine. That literary magazine was entirely made of student creations and almost entirely edited by students as well. He was a bastion of knowledge and an eager steward of creativity.

So I and the chief editor of the magazine that year, as well as several of our friends, decided to do a bit of Shakespeare in the classroom. We took our inspiration straight from the play. We had a soothsayer deliver him a tea-stained letter of warning. The editor spent the most time with him, especially as Shakespeare in the Park loomed ahead, so she put up a sign that said BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH! At home we prepared name tags to show which senators we were (I was Cinna). We blew up balloons to use as weapons. I talked to the teachers of my friends classes to get the okay for them to leave class.

Third period that day, we gathered together and put togas and our nametags on. Some of the boys forgot to bring sheets, so they made them out of newspaper (which is still hilarious to me). We made our way into the classroom and in the confusion that followed, we declared Caesar must die and did the deed. (We couldn’t all get behind him, but a few of us did) We told everyone to support Shakespeare in the Park just to make it official, but he wouldn’t let us leave the classroom until everyone gave us a round of applause. Apparently he was raving about it for the rest of the day!

So what I mean to say is, the Ides of March doesn’t have to be something you celebrate alone or just with the people in your phone. The Ides of March can be celebrated with and by everyone!
