internet brainrot by tdstr is part really cool interesting hardcore techno and part memefest. and as someone who, i feel, has really engaged with meme-heavy musical compositions that still take themselves seriously, i kind of prefer the memeless side of music. i think the point of dariacore is to heavily use obnoxiously memetic samples on top of the general intense hardcore sound. i seriously like the high tempo, varied melodies, heavy bass & intense percussion- all the hardcore side of it. i like hardcore edm that uses lots of samples. and i like music that is just memetic samples into music (see neil cicierega's mouth albums). but with this album i kind of think that the hardcore edm side would stand better on its own or with less of the meme Culture bogging it down. it's when it starts leaning into irony stylings or reveling in some subculture/fandom's iconography that i think it loses me. another station was a really great track but then when damn right came on and i heard familiar sample after familiar sample bring me into something with no hablo americano as its leading sample i got pulled out. and damn right is a pretty good track, i like it a lot! it's just the swing of the focus kind of prevents me from getting into the right mindset to enjoy self-serious hardcore edm or bite-sized high-effort melodic shitpost-inspired music. in short, this album lives up to its title, and it's almost disappointing for that. it's like i went to someone's house and in order to make me feel comfortable they had their computer open to tumblr with my account logged in. like oh i wasn't aware that's how you decided to do things around here

i adore sonic music so much i love how each ost is distinct and unique and how many genres have been covered over the years, i love how sonic adventure embodies the vibes of the 90s while adventure 2 jumps immediately into butt rock and early 2000s glory with all its might just a few years later, i love shadow the hedgehog doing a 180 from the upbeat mood of heroes to embrace edge in all of its different forms, im obsessed with sonic 06's main theme mixing guitars and rock with symphony instruments and putting rap on the top and pulling it off flawlessly, i love unleashed embracing music from all over the world and weaving it both into cool jazz and high-energy tracks, and i adore frontiers dancing around the openworld ost trope of gentle subtle pianos and not being afraid to break the calmness with edm that feels like early 2010s monstercat and then breaking it further with the titan tracks to really give contrast and weight to their respective battles. im obsessed with the variety in this franchise and you should be too

Louis Tomlinson may only have two solo albums but he's proving to be one of the artists people should keep an eye on.

Having burst onto the music scene in 2010 as one-fifth of One Direction – a band created by Nicole Scherzinger on The X Factor after all five members were rejected, he's proven he's not just an ex-boyband singer. While singers from bands tend to keep a low profile and venture into other industries after a split, Louis is on a one-way ticket to becoming a mega-star in his own right.

Known for never losing his Doncaster accent and humour, the 31-year-old is currently embarking on his Faith In The Future World Tour, performing to thousands of die-hard fans every night – which he deserves credit for.

Although he may have come from one of the biggest bands of all time, the cheeky chap isn't afraid of getting up close and personal with fans – much to the dismay of his security who leap into action when he jumps off stage and runs to the barricade to see fans. In recent weeks, Louis has seen his expensive vests ripped off him, with fans even going as far as tickling him.

This, however, hasn't stopped him from putting on an incredible show. Despite only releasing two studio albums as a soloist (his second topping the Official UK Charts), he's pushing himself to the limits and playing arenas across the world. Most recently, he performed to around 21,000 fans at Manchester's AO Arena on November 11.

Walking onto the stage may be daunting for some, but Tomlinson showed no signs of fear as he opened with The Greatest – ironically, perhaps the greatest opening track. Throughout the night, he performed hits including Kill My Mind but also paying tribute to his One Direction days, belting out Drag Me Down and Where Do Broken Hearts Go. But since his pop days, Tomlinson has edged towards a more EDM and synth sound before finding his comfort in rockier tracks. He'd previously stated he'd taken inspiration from the likes of Sam Fender, Amy Winehouse, Arctic Monkeys and Manchester legends, Oasis.

Nowadays, fans can expect the odd pop hit but also enjoy punk rock as well as indie pop and soft rock.

However, despite being in the business for almost 14 years, Louis remained grounded and acknowledged that Manchester was the start of his career. Between songs, he recalled his first audition for The X Factor in front of Simon Cowell, Scherzinger and Louis Walsh, being in the city. He told fans: "This is where I did my very first audition, so to be back here on my own it definitely feels full circle and I couldn't have done that without you.

We're starting to see the sound of the 2010's differentiating itself from the 2000's. EDM and dance pop is still big, especially that "festival sound". Nicki Minaj's Starships and Rihanna's We Found Love are notable examples of the "wordless chorus" (where the song builds up to a drop or some other kind of musical phrase instead of a traditional chorus) that will continue to shape the decade's musical landscape. We'll also start to see more examples of songs being attributed to the producer in addition to, or in some cases instead of, the vocalist.

But what's especially interesting this year are the new ways artists are being able to grow an audience. Traditional methods of promotion like TV are still present, with Fun's We Are Young gaining widespread popularity from its cover on Glee and One Direction gaining their initial popularity off of The X Factor. But this is the year we're starting to see the trends shifting. While Carly Rae Jepsen was already making a name for herself in the Canadian music scene through her appearance on Canadian Idol, her debut hit Call Me Maybe, started to take off in the States after Justin Bieber tweeted about it. This wasn't the first time a song blew up online, and it wasn't even the biggest this year.

I won't bury the lead: this was the year Psy's Gangnam Style took off worldwide. However, the song is not featured on this poll, because it only made it to number 47 on the Billboard Year-End chart. This is notable for any Korean language song (especially at the time), but for a song that was so universally known and parodied, if feels odd that it wasn't bigger than it was. The reason for that is Gangnam Style became popular through its music video, and Billboard didn't factor YouTube views into their charts at the time. Billboard changed their data collection to include YouTube views later this year. Was it because of Psy? Maybe. But after this year, we'll start to see a lot more instances of songs taking off in part to the performance of their music videos -- even more than the peak of MTV in the 80's.

So I have really detailed thoughts on what constitutes “music” and how that may be defined for alien cultures in sci fi. I’ve thought about this extensively since I was 14 and the conclusion I’ve come to is that altean music is the most industrial, heavy, absolutely dark fast paced noisemusic ever conceived. Metal grinding against metal. Plates shrieking against each other. Dull thumping on thick glass. String instruments that squeak and squeal. sudden starts and stops. Heavy drums you can feel in your teeth. clanking. whistling. wheezing. All the kinds of noises you hear in altean music. coran prefers more “classical” altean music, which entails more drums and strings (of the shrieking variety). allura prefers the “modern” (of her youth) altean music, their equivalent to pop, which is more industrial & metal grindy.

She excitedly shows the humans some altean music only to find them absolutely repulsed. Just, like, they’re trying to be nice. But when I say industrial I mean like, a collection of noises that we wouldn’t even categorize as music. so they can’t help the just inherent misunderstanding. except keith, he fucking LOVES it. He goes WILD for it. Allura convinces him to actually dance to it and they just flail around wildly.

he tries to show allura the music that he likes but sadly divorced dad rock doesn’t do much for her. But through their & pidge’s combined efforts into the forays of Abrasive Human Music they discover that allura also really likes death metal

I was listening to some edm and dubstep stuff with my buddies that we used to listen to back in the day. We were like, LOL this is so much fun. But it's also pretty dated.

Later I checked the release dates. It's all 2010, 2011, 2012... in other words: it's all pre-RAM.

Look, I know I am probably biased, but I truly believe RAM changed the entire game. And that change has still not been reversed, more than ten years later. Music does not sound the same.

18/01/2024 - SEA @ EDM

Tuna and his soft hands -> Dumo - clipped all the way back in January before I even knew how to make gifs. a bit of a season obit + thoughts about Tuna under the cut.

ooough this is gonna be very off the cuff and unedited so here goes!

this clip is from the oilers match that ended the kraken point streak. it was a strange, tense match. filled with penalties and scrums. this is where we lost Yanni to a charging major and 2 game suspension. as an aside: I don't think about players and their hits the same anymore after this. at the time, I was pretty much on the train of "well, he didn't hurt the guy", but since then I've done a lot of thinking. every player has thrown a questionable hit, or has the potential to - including all of my favourites. on principle: if a bad hit delivered by a random opposing player is wrong, that standard has to apply to my faves too. anyway. everyone was getting sick around this time, and if i remember correctly we lost a bunch of guys to illness during the pens match just days before this one. the vibes were high up until then, and it feels like we never really recovered. I know the season hasn't panned out the way we wanted since, but I still look back on those times so fondly.

a little breakdown of the clip:

there are two people bearing down on Tuna here. Darnell Nurse (#25) gives a pretty half-hearted effort after he realises Tuna isn't going to rim the puck along the boards. Tuna cuts into the middle - I wonder if he's looking for a cross ice pass to Ebs (#7) here? he stops pulls the puck in so so quickly - avoids the sweeping stick check from Evander Kane (#91), and shovels a backhand pass to Dumo from such an awkward angle that I'm baffled as to how he even did it. he opens himself up for a pass on the blue line after, which I'd have liked to see. but oh well!

thoughts on tuna which have been rolling around in my head like those lint balls in the dryer:

i'm always thinking about Tuna and the little things he does. he's one of the most interesting kraken (to ME). i don't like to play favourites but i have to admit that games just don't have the same shine when he's not in </3 I like that he holds on to the puck a little, I like that he's got good hands in tight spaces, I like that he shoots with accuracy over explosive power. I like that he has a tiny bit of grit to him. I like that he's opportunistic - what I noticed most about him was his habit of just... being in the right place at the right time. he'll probably never be one of those guys who can generate chances on his own unless he miraculously makes a late leap in development, but if there's a chance then he'll be there to finish on it.

he's a quiet player in terms of hype around the league. a journeyman, a depth acquisition. hot on the market when his contract is up, but rarely spoken of otherwise. I felt some kinda way when I saw him answer that question about staying with the kraken. he's been shuttled from team to team, seemingly unable to find a home for so long - and I know this is common, I know that's how this league works for the vast majority of players who aren't franchise altering superstars. whatever. it still hit me that he could simply leave, and this team would just be another team where he couldn't put roots down. there's an article from the 2010s naming him a 'core' player of the red wings, did you know? and since then, he's just bounced and bounced around. i know this league is a business, i know teams just need to do what they have to in order to win. I don't care. let him rest. let him find a home. god.

i've said this about my other teams too, but 23-24 kraken will always be special to me. my lovely losers who fought and stumbled and failed. my first wagon. my little cobbled together family of leftovers. this team won't ever be the same again and I'm trying to be okay with that - but to contradict myself... I hope Tuna stays with the kraken. yeah, okay he's just some guy, but to quote that one tumblr post: hes MY just some guy. i am woefully attached, and it's such a long shot but I hope he can be a part of this team growing and blossoming into something strong for the next couple of years. hockey gods if you are listening - I hope he retires a kraken.
