Genuinely why do so many people seem to WANT Mike to be a one dimensional character? Why do so many people get so defensive when you read into the things he says and does in order to better understand him? The acknowledgement of Mike and his complexities and struggles is not a dismissal of other characters. I feel like some people just do not understand that.

Such a weird thing to take the extra time to add "(For the hearing impaired)" to the English language subtitle option on a disc. Like what is that the actual purpose of that? They think deaf people are gonna go "Ohhhh that's for me! Thank god they pointed it out, I'd've thought I couldn't use it otherwise!"
Like they don't stick "(Para personas con discapacidad auditiva)" under there just in case a deaf Mexican is watching, they seem to figure the deaf Mexicans can figure out that the "Espanol" option is usable.

in my continuing: too brain dead for anything except nostalgia media
I've been watching Father Dowling and been struck by the fact that they had an entire initial half-season in WINTER with snow and ice and people wearing coats
and yeah it takes place in Chicago
but also no one does that in any tv I've seen in like a decade
and now I feel old
and I miss winter

There's a problem that few people have noticed in the series, and that I call "sociological inconsistency." By this term, I mean that I don't have the impression that the characters act in accordance with the environment and education in which they grew up.
For example, princesses. I expected the series to make them noble, honorable, responsible, etc. in short, a “princely character”. It could even have been a good possibility of deconstruction, by showing them hampered in military but also political and diplomatic responsibilities, as well as in stifling protocols and etiquettes. But instead, the series just showed me how little girls imagine life as a princess: the privileges without the responsibilities. Frosta could have saved the day, but the writers thought it was too good an idea and so canceled it.
Another example: the child soldiers of the Horde. Given that they grew up in a strict, militaristic and propagandist environment, I expected to see them indoctrinated, disciplined, hyper-violent and withdrawn because of an education whose sole purpose was to make them docile and docile killing machines ready to die for the cause of the Horde and refusing to flee in the face of danger… Well, ultimately, they are the luckiest child soldiers in fiction, because I find them just as normal as if they had just come out of a summer camp . The worst examples of this have to be Adora and Scorpia, where I never really got the impression that they received a military and cult education (technically there should be Catra, but we concluded a long time ago that she was a mary sue, too smart to be fooled by Horde indoctrination).
So some will tell me that these "sociological inconsistencies" can be explained by the fact that the screenwriters wanted to make the characters sympathetic to young audiences to the detriment of coherence, but in my opinion if they succeeded in making a catgirl with sadistic and incestuous tendencies sympathetic in the eyes of the public, I don't see what stops them from being able to do the same for princesses and child soldiers stuck in their education.
this.
#the writers really did not have the slightest idea of how war worked#the characters could very well have been in a romcom or a slice of life story and there wouldn't be much change to their personalities#adora and catra only show signs of trauma from shadow weaver's abuse and not from the horde as a whole#all the other cadets seem to be mostly fine#it's just weird#spop critical#spop#spop salt#spop criticism#spop discourse#she ra#anti spop#anti shera

You know I think part of the issue with the OFMD fandom is that a lot of these babies (affectionate) are being unhinged about a fandom for the first time. They weren't around to be bizarre about BBC Sherlock or Hetalia so they're out here being insane about this very oddball sort of first fandom in that it involves a lot of things that queer people tend to go through later in life, if at all, and they're seeing it through the viewpoint of all this youth and self-intuition that a lot of us don't or didn't have at that age so we're just kind of. Hurdling along with them to a certain extent. A lot of the weird behavior in this fandom is just what happens when a fifteen year old queer kid imprints too hard on a 48-year-old gay man and I don't know if there's anything WRONG with that per se but it's why things are sometimes. Very weird.
#OFMD#Maggie Talks#i wouldn't really even call most of it BAD behavior#it's just WEIRD#and it does remind me of being in the BBC Sherlock fandom when I was in my late teens#but the vocabulary has improved and changed so much that it's hard to draw direct comparisons#Also OFMD is just a fundimentally different experience than Queer Baiting: The Show: The Fandom.
