my favorite riordan characters (just my opinion, don’t come at me)

Magnus Chase

I read MCGoA first (dont judge), so I have sentimental value over this series. I think magnus is literally so hilarious in a tired and confused way. It’s also so funny how Percy was so lost still like after 5 books but Magnus knows so much about the mythology already. Even after reading pjo i thought Magnus was way funnier and better main character than Percy. I think that was because Magnus is 16 in his series and Percy is just 12 in the lightning thief and I was already like 14-15 and liked more mature characters (Magnus is still a child and a dumbass). Magnus is also a very sad character if you think about it. He is basically an orphan bc his father wasn’t there and he witnessed his mothers death. Then he lived in the streets and was probably hungry, cold and scared almost every day. And then BOOM. Suddenly weird shit happens and he dies a gruesome death. Like seriously, a ball of melted asphalt burns through his body… He also never really had time to cope with the being dead thing bc suddenly he's supposed to save the world. Like wtf. Also I get the biggest gender envy ever (don’t ask why, he’s kinda pathetic xd). Best thing is that he’s fruity like I am. Magnus is also the healer so it is really interesting to get the healer's pov, a guy who isn’t your usual hero. Magnus also defeated LOKI, A GOD, with the power of friendship, which is hilarious. Magnus starts the show as a cynical boy who has lost everyone but by the end he has found a new family and moved on and I think that’s beautiful.

2. Will Solace

The absolute sass master. Of course Percy is still the sassiest ever but oh boy does Will come the next second. Will seriously takes no shit. I haven’t read his and Nico’s book yet but just from BoO and tHO I can say he has some balls. Like, one of the first things he does is calling Octavian, one of the biggest bad guys, an anemic loser. WHILE standing nose to nose with him. Like even Nico thought that Octavian was kinda scary but Will just marches right up to him and starts throwing insults. And then he proceeds to stubbornly make Nico rest and heal. He is so stubborn and bossy and I love him for it. Will also has a sadder side. He always puts everyone else before him bc he is the healer so it’s his job. He also was forced to be a leader way too young after he lost his older siblings. Still, he manages to walk around with a smile on his face. Will is so strong and his past is way overlooked. All the fans focus on Nico’s traumas and how Will helped him but never the other way around. Give Will some love, people.

3.Apollon (Lester Papadopoulos)

The most dramatic god ever, like omg. Apollo/Apollon has always been my favorite Greek god and Rick's version is just perfect. He is so annoyingly self centered and arrogant but at the same time he is so sad and vulnerable. I have never cried bc of Riordan's books but the hidden oracle made me sod like a baby. All the regret and pain in the stories about his lovers was heartbreaking. How his heart is stone bc he doesn’t believe in love anymore and how he takes responsibility for all the death he has caused. He is still an asshole but at least he notices it. I relate to him on such a deep level. He masks all his pain with humor and overconfidence just like I do. I haven't finished the trials of the Apollon yet but I can’t wait to read more of him and learn even more sad, funny and interesting things about him as a character.

4.Percy

Of course I have to include our best boy. During the HoO I just kept waiting for Percy’s POV just bc his thought process is the most entertaining in my opinion. He is so unhinged most of the time. Like, everyone is scared of Nico, no, you guys should be absolutely terrified by Percy. Like bro is so close to losing it. Few more inconveniences and he will kill everyone. but at the same time he likes eating blue food and doesn’t know half of the myths the others do. He just does what he feels like doing. My favorite moment was when he and Annabeth were in Tartarus and Percy was about to kill Akhlys by drowning her in her own poison. Like bro is insane. It’s also so sad that he and Annabeth have been in the front lines of war since they were like 12. It’s always them. Like there had to be other heroes right? Or like why couldn’t some minor god handle the situations? I have always loved characters who insult the enemy while fighting and Percy is just like that. At first, I didn't think he was any special but as he grew older, I started to like him more. Probably bc I could relate to him better when he was closer to my age. He also got more serious as he got older. I’m kinda pissed that he gets again a new series even tho Riordan has other characters that have potential. (I MEAN MAGNUS! LIKE PLEASE RICK! PLEASE!)

you mentioned how many of Armand's traits have been given to Louis, but I think when I really started to give up on getting even a loose book interpretation of Armand was when I saw the first Claudia trailer. Cause if you already have one character stuck in perpetual teenagerhood, are you that motivated to introduce a 2nd one? I mean, I personally would, because I think it'd be that much funnier to see two teenagers plotting against each other in S2, but my fear is these writers will just figure they've got teen angst and identity covered, and all they need Armand for is to pop up and be a non-threatening love interest while Lestat is otherwise engaged.

I'm still not sold on the Rashid theories, mostly because no matter how ooc one gets, I'm not sure I can believe they'd position Armand as totally subservient to Louis. And I LIKE Rashid. But as Armand? No, please no.

So like. I’ve been really cautious about talking about Claudia because I’m like, mega skeptical about this character change and I don’t like it 😊

As much as I’m willing to give AMC!Claudia a chance as an individual OC, I’ve gotten some red flags about the way the team has talked about women & girls and I’m just. Like. How are you going to remove the main feminist drive of the story to replace it with potentially sexist tropes about teenage girls?

I wrote about this a while back so I won’t go deep on this right now, but I think it’s really suspicious that RJ & them don’t think aging L&L up to their 30s matters when like, they’re saying being 14 somehow is an existential crisis. Does age matter or does it not? Why do they keep commenting on girls’ hormones? Do these vampires even HAVE hormones?! Bro she’s dead lol. I mean I guess they have sex now so whatever it’s a whole new world.

But like the thing about VC characters is that their age has more to do with their relationship to humanity imo; we’ve talked in circles about whether or not the Blood fixes your brain where it is and I think that’s a really cool conversation to have but there’s not a definitive answer bc Anne wasn’t writing with it in mind. Their life experiences are more significant than their brains.

Like, Armand has never been a teen angst figure. Even when I first read them as a teen I wasn’t like OMG HE’S LIKE ME. VC isn’t a coming of age story and isn’t YA. Armand is 500 years old lmfao and his mortal age is a stigma to always remind us what happened to him. His visual age creates a set of external factors related to the way people treat him, and same with Book!Claudia. Claudia was not a child, either, and the tragedy of her story (aside from the internal body horror) is that people will treat her like a child forever.

So having AMC!Claudia as a teenage girl can still feature this same topic; the horror of her story has potential to tap into those same themes, even if they’re very different. There’s a difference in that she CAN be independent even if her journey getting there is different. This tragedy is less internal than the book, less dramatically anyway; I think the horror here will be more external. People are still probably going to talk down to her and treat her poorly and not allow her agency in certain situations. In a universe where she can have & wants to have sex, she’s always going to have to navigate potential child predators. But she isn’t locked to an adult the way Book!Claudia is. And I think this has a lot of potential and like, even accepting the change as a logistical workaround for shooting, I think care has to be taken to tell that rich story, and I’d like to see it. I would hate for us to swap out Claudia’s story for vampire soap opera teen girl tropes, especially knowing how personal the character was to Anne and how it started the entire series.

So having said that, like. There’s two ways to look at this:

If Armand is still a teen, after watching Episode 4 I really worry about the petty changes they’d make to him if there’s like TEENAGER LORE in this universe. Armand isn’t Like That because he’s a dumb teenager, he’s Like That because he’s been repeatedly traumatized for centuries. Even as a mortal he wasn’t a typical teenager. WHAT DID MARIUS CALL HIM, A WIZENED FUNERAL SPIRIT OR SOMETHING LMAO. And like if the show posits that Teenage Girl = Whiny Boy Crazy Annoying Drama Queen, like, what is the trope they’ll lean into for Teenage Boy? How does this lore about being hormonal fit into the way they’ll portray him?

And like, WHILE YOU’RE RIGHT THAT NOW WE ALREADY HAVE A TEEN CHARACTER it makes me wonder if Armand’s role would change and how this could change the way he antagonizes Claudia. COULD THEY EVEN BE A COUPLE????? Imagine she leaves with Armand instead of Madeleine?

Cause I’m thinking like, if they stuck to the main Paris story, this Claudia doesn’t really have a NEED for Madeleine at all, does she? They’re setting her up that she’s interested in romance so I think it might be that she wants a romantic partner. (Of course Madeleine might have been romantic too once she turned but meaning that it was framed as a parental figure because Claudia was always going to need a visible adult.)

But if the show isn’t afraid of talking about teenage sexuality, he could still show up as a love interest. Like the shallowest read of TVA would tell us that he’s like Ricean Sex Addict Teen and I wonder in the hands of this team if that translates to him being hypersexual in trying to seduce Louis. We sure rushed through to Claudia’s 18th birthday, so! Lol Maybe they’re not afraid to go there. (Also how old were Louis and Jonah??????????????????????????????????????????? Louis might not mind lol.)

But you’re also right that if there’s only room for one teen, and Armand ISN’T a teen, like. It’s just not the same, yall!!!!!!!!!! It’s just not the same character. And even seeing the way age is handled/discussed in this universe (plus the way they’ve handled Daniel & Night Island) just screams to me that they don’t care about Armand the way I do LMAO. To each his own, man, but it’s like. As a VC fan, like, when you strip so much of what I enjoy about VC from an adaptation, what’s left?

I read The Rules of Scoundrels series after reading an ask somebody sent you and was thoroughly amused because of the inclusion of Turkey and a Turkish man and I was taken aback because I rarely find Turkish (or even Turkic in general) characters in books I read. The Turkish man's name being inaccurate and Nick's Turkish nickname being very questionable was super funny. (Durukhan is not and has never been a Turkish name and bulan,which is Nick's nickname in the East means "the one who finds",not hunter and it would not be used as a cool nickname lol) If Rock's actual name was supposed to be a last name it's even funnier bc we didn't have last names/family names back then. The one city name that gets mentioned (Ankara) is accurate tho 💀(Vaguely talking about the entire country instead of talking about the specific locations inside the country seems to be a thing in HR when it comes to non Western countries) At least the guy was actually charming and sweet and that was nice bc I braced myself for the barbarian brute stereotype and nobody made any comments about "how the Turks are" so,it's a win,I guess? 😁 (I did cringe at the speech about how dance is more sensual in the East,especially in India and how the dude can't teach the girl about the things he learned there bc they are things good English ladies don't learn 🙄) The book wasn't even about the Turkish man (Whose name I can't acknowledge without laughing) but I was on guard from beginning to end everytime he showed up. I was like "Oh??? 👀 Tell me more about what's going on with Rock and his kind eyes 🗣🗣"

First, genuinely thank you because I learnt a lot while reading this, and it was also very funny. It's been over two years since I read Ten Ways to Be Adored When Landing a Lord by Sarah MacLean and it admittedly wasn't one of my favorites.

Regarding the naming conventions and translation errors, it isn't new from what I've seen within the genre. One of the bigger fuck-ups I've noted previously was the Bridgerton show choosing to give Kate the "Indian" name "Kathani", a name which isn't actually a name anyone gives their child in real life. Then there's the smaller nickname mess in Scarlett Scott's Earl of Every Sin in which the hero has the "dastardly" Spanish nickname "El Corazon Oscuro" which means "The Dark Heart" but the actual nickname in Spanish sounds more funny than menacing. Like, "El Oscuro" alone would have been a little better. So I totally get how an author not from this culture would a) create an inaccurate name with no meaning when the meaning of the name is very important in many Eastern cultures and b) give a white man a ridiculous nickname that's basically a translation error.

Also LOL regarding the dance thing, I don't know what kind of dancing Nick is talking about but the reason he'd be unable to teach the heroine how to dance that way is more likely because it requires years of intensive study, not because it's "sensual" or "improper" or some fetishizing bullshit.

That being said, I'm glad the author managed to avoid the worst stereotypes about men from Turkey (or the East or Asia in general) and I'm glad you enjoyed!

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

There aren't many book that I can say just effortlessly waltzes their way into becoming one of my favorites but this series did just that. It did it slowly and captivated me with every single word. I am terribly sad for it to be over but there is always the show and re-reads haha.

Every detail and job that the crows did in this book all played out so nicely in the end. A certain merch's downfall was so pleasing to read considering how terrible he is, (it helped my soul to read that btw) especially Jesper reading Wylan the paper beforehand (ahahhah) and Van Eck flailing around acting like a crazy person. I like how it paralleled to Van Eck's treatment of Wylan's mom. The whole transfer of estates and how Van Eck will never be able to hold his own empire again. When I read of his downfall I was reminded of jobs Kaz sent the crows on and it made sense, especially when they didn't make a whole lot of sense when I was reading the book. How she is able to plan for all of that is crazy!

The way Kaz plots and plans is so funny to read because as we are reminded in the book several times that "Kaz Brekker didn't need a reason" but everything he has ever done was backed up with a reason!! I also like how he literally held a one man coup against Per Haskell, beat up 10 men (mostly without his cane if I might add), and won!!! our demjin is a barrel boss now! I hope he does crime!

Chapter 39 and 40 absolutely hurt to read I was crying at 2:30 this morning. :( But I will say chapter 44 made me feel a tiny bit better but I'm still upset. MY BABIES (kaz + inej) HELD HANDS WITHOUT GLOVES, the way I had to hold in a scream and not throw the book in happiness haha. AND YOU KNOW THST KAZ WAS PROBABLY NOT OKAY OR WAS TRYING TO BE FOR INEJ. and he bought her a ship and found her parents aAAAHHHH

"we were all supposed to make it" will always be so heartbreaking to read, I knew he would die as I read spoilers beforehand but still they're my crows :( so will "i have be made to protect you, even in death I will find a way" HE DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER HE DESERVED TO BE IN RAVKA WITH NINA HELPING TO REFORM THE YOUNG DRUSKELLES!! I will always hate that he was killed, his arc was so good and IT WAS STILL GOING!! *angry exclamation points* how are you just going to rip out my heart like that ms. bradugo? did you enjoy it?

I truly hope Kaz and Inej are able to heal and grow (not inej, she is perfect, I take absolutely no critism for that). I want them to be the King and Queen of the Barrel and be the fearsome kids they are!! If I see one more kanej death trope I will scream :) They deserve to heal and live their lives hopefully together, kaz being a scary barrel boss and inej being a scary slaveholder hunter. They deserve to be the representation some in similar situations need and I find it tremendously rude! i'll haunt the kanej death trope writers, don't test me haha

The found family trope will forever be my favorite and have a special place in my heart. I loved how the crows had every reason to disband after Inej was safe but they didn't, as Wylan stated he wouldn't have wanted it any other way and I am sure that is the same for the rest of the crows, even kaz! I sure wouldn't have wanted the crows to be any different, maybe with less trauma though. wylan's "why I am here" will never not be funny bc all the characters feelings said this but he was truly the only one who said the words. Inej and matthias said similar things but I find wylan saying it so much funnier.

I can't wait to read more of the crows if/when Ms. Bardugo writes the 3rd book. This book/series deserves all the stars in the world (again no critism will be taken hehe) there's also this kanej fan fic that shows the crows and their collective healing that I am reading called "dealing with our demons" on AO3 KDSBGFILSBFI ITS SO GOOD THE AUTHOR IS JUST SO WONDERFUL

Since rewatching the guardian drama after reading the novel has made me mad about how bad and good both of them are I am Obligated to write out a list of what I think the perfect merger btw both versions of canon are. This will be in list format otherwise I’ll end up writing like 6k words again.

TLDR: the genre stays as supernatural from the novel and not Sci fi, bc that was rlly not fleshed out well. Shen Wei is a ghost king, and all the dixingren are ghosts or demons like originally intended. The ghost race naturally exists and wasn't born from kunluns shoulder fire or anything. They just exist separate from humans. Not all ghosts are former humans, some people are just born as ghosts, like Shen Wei. Zhao Yunlan has the guardian whip and all the cool stuff that comes with the Guardian order. Overall, i’d keep the novel’s plot and relationship progression and ending without the backstory. Instead the backstory is a merger of both canons. From the drama I’d keep the characterization and themes as well as like half the extra cases and omit the other half.

I’ll be elaborating much further on my ideal backstory and other stuff under the cut bc the rest is 1.5k and I don’t wanna clog the dash

Okay SO In my ideal backstory there are two timelines just like the drama but the mythology of the book. The god Kunlun is actually zyl that went back in time and became a god. But the one that went back isn’t the current Zhao Yunlan. There has to be an original timeline where the god Kunlun never existed. Thus the great seal nor the separation of the three realms don’t exist either. Zhao Yunlan must go back in time to become a god, meet Shen Wei in the past, and create the current timeline where the separation exists but isn’t perfect. The current timeline is the one that the majority of the series takes place in.

In the original timeline, Zhao Yunlan is just some dude living in a world where ghosts, fairies, and all other beings just live in a giant free for all and it's kinda just a mess.

Like there’s government in modern context and all and all races live with each other but there's constant tension. ZYL works at some equivalent of the SID (same staff and side characters, but novel vers. Lin Jing is a monk, CSZ a zombie, etc) to protect people and all that and their job is rather hard. One day encounters the thousands year old ghost king Wei (who isnt shen wei yet bc zyl gave him that name in the future) who works alone as like a rouge cultivator of sorts. He lives on the surface undercover as a professor still bc he’s trying to not catch Yezun’s attention but does all the stuff he normally does as Heipaoshi. The two ally together for a case and bc they both have the same goals of getting all races to live in peace. At current, there are forces working together to decimate the human race, all lead by Yezun

As they work together they become closer and all that. Shen Wei tells him about how he was unable to prevent the great war 5 thousand years ago and neither could the gods so he’s spent the past 5 thousand years trying to make up for it. As they search for ways to stop Yezun, they gather the 4 hallows and learn how to use them to manipulate time so ZYL can go into the past and stop the great war and separate the three realms (living, dead, ghost). Shen Wei wants to go back with him but he can’t because he was alive all those years ago so if he goes back it will create a paradox. ZYL promises he’ll find Shen Wei in the past and create a timeline where they could be together in peace (that is the current timeline)

When goes back he becomes the god kunlun because there needed to be a new god born at the time to prevent the war. Also this time traveller looked promising to Nuwa, Fuxi, and Shennong. And I know in the guardian universe gods are usually born and ppl don’t become gods. EXCEPT this can happen when a god passes on smth from their body onto them bc that did happen in the novel with Kunlun making shen wei a demigod. And since fu you and ma gui are supposed to be gods Nu Wa and Fuxi I think that when they die, they should make ZYL a god and that's how this stuff happens.

So like ZYL explains to the gods the time he came from and how he wants to save everything and they make him a god and he works to save everything just like he did in the drama but this time with the novel plotline. During this time he meets young Shen Wei (he’s still like a hundred or so years old) and they get close and all the stuff from the backstory happens. He gives him his name, all that good stuff. The entire time doesn’t let him know that he’s from the future or that his real name is ZYL. He just poses as kunlun.

The two of them alongside the other gods (who still die at the times they do in the novel) work together to end the war and establish the great seal and set up the cycle of reincarnation, per the current timeline. Although the seal and cycle of reincarnation aren’t perfect. Gods can’t reincarnate, and ghosts still don’t have souls. And just like the novel, doing all of this kills ZYL bc it takes a lot of energy to create the seal even though it isn’t perfect.

Shen Wei of course doesn’t want ZYL to die and zyl says it's alright because he fixed the timeline so there must One day they will meet again and ZYL reveals the truth about the timeline to shen wei before he dies. This becomes the promise that Shen Wei mentions to meet again. Before he dies, ZYL gives him the shoulder fire as a memento ( i still like the candy wrapper necklace deal but i’ll take this too. Maybe both.. The pendant is still just rlly cool.. Gay ppl)

Shen Wei knows gods can’t enter the cycle of reincarnation and still makes the deal with Shennong to strip Kunlun of his godhood and let him reincarnate. This sets us into the novel timeline where isn’t allowed to meet any of zyl’s reincarnations before he becomes zyl otherwise he will die and also fuck up the timeline. The same 5 thousand years of pining still ensue bc Gay Ppl and i love making Shen Wei suffer but he doesn’t have the shrine room thing bc i think thats weird and yea.. Bad.

In the meantime Shen Wei does a lot of things mostly just protecting the great seal and working for Hell to keep the peace but still does other stuff. He still watches out for ZYL’s reincarnations but doesn’t do much besides make sure they don’t die a premature death. They meet again finally at the beginning of the series and the timeline resumes like canon. And that's my master plan that merges both drama logic and novel logic while making a much better timeline. (I hope that makes some sense)

Da Qing is still Kunlun’s pet cat and important. Novel backstory applies to him. And I already mentioned him kinda but as for Yezun (Gui Mian in the novel) his deal is similar as in the drama but just a ghost. And he is a big player in the great war, he thought Shen Wei abandoned him as a kid but they were just separated. Shen Wei doesn’t know it's him till the end of the war and couldn’t stop him in the OG timeline and vows to bring him to justice and make amends. Shen Wei continuously tries to explain things to him but he just won’t listen and is imprisoned in hell bc yk… war criminal stuff and yeah he’s the main antagonist trying to break the great seal bc he’s still made about the past. Idk. Yezun wasn’t well written in the novel OR the drama so like… honestly he just needs to be completely rewritten and I don’t care enough about that. He can just be a weak villain idk

the drama characterization stays the same for everyone else bc found family go brr. However for Lao Chu i… hmm… i think he should still be a zombie but the reason he killed someone should be related to his brother. I like that addition and then shen wei realized his sentence was unjust and exempted him. i like that storyline merger. bc the brother thing and him admiring Heipaoshi was drama only. in the novel lao chu just murdered some kid for a rlly whatever reason.

uhhh in terms of the cases… id make adjustments to most of them. i think the li qian case should be like the drama bc the novel just had her as a murderer and it was boring.

For the mountain river awl one was fine… novel version was funnier and more interesting action wise tbh… rip zyl and his exorbitant flirting. uhhh the whole reveal that shen wei was the soul reaper thing was kinda… ehh in the novel but i did love the comedy of afterwards Shen Wei pretending he went into cardiac arrest when he actually just… has no pulse bc he's a ghost.

ID KEEP THE WORTH IT SCENE AND RAIN SCENE… THOSE FUCK SO HARD… I love the drama for adding those every damn day. the novel version of zyl losing his sight sucked and was sooo boring. Keep the drama version on that.

also id keep dr. cheng. i'm very pro dr. cheng and her friendship with shen wei it adds so much to his character imo. keep the fruit seller man and his wife for the merit brush..omg it adds SO MUCH the way the drama did it.. like the drams build up with the novels pace of that arc.. mwah. it felt like it dragged a bit in the drama but if it went faster and without the hospital ep and with sha ya (sorry sha ya) that would've been so good. tho keep novel version of da qings memory loss and lao li. that was rlly impactful.

id say keep some of the cases like the mirror one, the eyes doctor one, etc. just to like.. yk have more to fill in general.. novel pacing but drama characterization without the bs that wasn't fully realized. and novel ending ofc. And that’s it!!

I hope most of this makes some amount of sense but it probably doesn’t. In my head it all tracks but like ik most of u don’t know anything about the novel so this sounds like gibberish. Also I know this would literally never happen but this is MY ideal merger of the two canons that I feel compelled to expand on for some reason. Anyways, as io said,, we need to rebuild guardian. Like literally let me and the mutuals write Guardian and it will be 500 times better.

Idk if you’ve talked about this before but?? How do you imagine twi!Malec’s first “i love you”s to go? I kinda feel like, while canon Malec had this big revelation because it was life or death, twi!Malec would have a more… quiet moment of it?? No less huge to either of them but just, less the result of being constantly under threat u kno skdhakdh it’s a scenario I love to think about. honestly im not sure, like, you're right in the sense this is not going to be a "right after i thought you got murdered in the Mass Slaughter i hugged you and declared my love for you" revelation, and i like the idea that it's just quiet and a normal moment, like obviously it's still momentous for them personally but like.... god just like.... they're lying in bed and alec just looks down at magnus, lying there with the sunlight streaming in over him, golden eyes looking up at him with such fondness, and he just can't help but breathe out i love you

and then hes like wait (registering what he just said) and magnus is like ??!!!! and alec refuses to backtrack but he is a little panik bc he DID just confess love to his boyf--and then magnus says (quiet but sincere and with such awe and almost like he can't believe how lucky he is) i love you, too.

like it just being this.... not really a Huge Special Revelation, just a quiet morning in, just them being intimate and soft and alec just looking down at him and thinking i love you so much and he, being a himbo with no filter when it comes to magnus and compliments, just blurts that out...............Sweet

and then, ofc, alec ravishes him. like just. they're both beaming at each other like idiots and alec kisses him and it just kinda escalates from there. cue lovemaking with lots of i love yous and soft kisses....

i think it would likely be post reveal, and honestly i'm not going to even bother with a timeline because im bad at them and the canon one sucks anyway so i can't go off that. but i do think they've been dating for a while (but maybe a little shorter than an i love you would normally come, because these bitches fall fast and hard) and alec has known for a while.

personally i also like the theory that like. twi magnus is not very subtle with his magic, so alec kinda.... figures out something's up almost right away. but he just rolls with it. like, canon magnus lost control of his magic bc alec kissed him and was taking his clothes off, you think twi magnus who has only just gotten his magic back after who knows how long being totally dormant, who's just coming out of his box on multiple levels and letting the world have color again, you think that magnus has got a tight control on his magic?

i like to think it's just like. overly responsive and instinctual now, with much less tight control, so like, he's thinking about how he wants to read a book and it flies into his hands, or he's absent-mindedly humming and his pens are floating and dancing on the desk, or alec kisses him and the lights flicker or a lamp begins to float. naturally, alec notices when the candles light themselves and things float into magnus's hands while he's not paying attention, and is kinda like. huh. i guess my boyfriend has superpowers. neat

and then when magnus, scared but determined, shakily confesses everything to him one night, alec's just like. [tenderly cupping his face and/or taking his hands] magnus, sweetheart, i am so so honored that you trust me with this and i need you to know that it changes nothing about how i feel for you, and that i'm not leaving you. but also. sweetheart, darling, dearest. did you really think i didn't notice that the houseplants water themselves and you make things float and remember the first time we had sex and there was a spontaneous thunderstorm outside and your beautiful golden cat eyes were out? sweetheart,

(magnus, choked up and half between panic/disbelief and just like so much relief/love: b-beautiful?)

on the other hand, despite my love of both of these being more quiet small moments rather than dramatic revelations, i DO ALSO like dramatic reveal/dramatic love confession, like. alec walking in on magnus doing something blatantly super magical after a long series of shenanigans designed to hide his magic (they presumably haven't had sex yet bc that shit would be way too obvious) and magnus is like "I CAN EXPLAIN"

or like. drama vague angst misunderstandings they have an argument of some sort and one of blurts it out, etc. like i do LIKE the dramatic reveals/confessions but i dont know how it would go because nothing seems to quite live up to the hype if that makes sense? that i can come up with anyway.

either way........................twi malec saying i love you for the first time 🥺

i just love like. specifically twi malec like. twi magnus, who's spent so long making himself small and invisible to stay safe, who's been isolated and lonely, who's now much more shy and hesitant and scared of letting people in and being vulnerable, and twi alec, confident and loud and open and shamelessly head over heels for magnus immediately. like he really took one look at twi magnus, short neat hair and much plainer than we're used to and just. him being cute af. and went "is anyone going to love this man" and didn't wait for an answer. actually what's funnier is before he actually knew magnus he was 100 percent just like oh im going to eat him ALIVE like he literally is just like. oh he looks kinda shy but sexy, i'm gonna fuck him so good, i cannot WAIT to get this quiet pretty man to scream and beg :) im gonna give him such a good time

and it's like that dynamic they start with, with magnus just beginning to come out of his shell and heal for unrelated reasons and then alec just.... helping? with that? he's so open and confident but like. he's also soft and understanding and gentle, he doesn't push magnus too hard but he does help coax him out of his shell, does slip through those emotional walls and just. help him heal, help him feel safe and confident in himself again, help him dress how he wants again, help him be open and enjoy sex and relationships again, etc. obviously he's not completely dependent on alec, but alec came at such a good time and he's just like. exactly what magnus needs in a relationship, you know? and vice versa, too, like maybe magnus helps alec give himself more private space, let himself take breaks and just relax more, as well as be vulnerable and not just the cool party boy all the time. they really help each other out, it's a great balance and they're so supportive and good for each other

yes this fic is from 2018. yes i read it every other week. it’s good for the SOUL. jonathan getting taken care of is always just such a good and sweet concept (maybe it’s my intense, undying love of him, but he deserves to be taken care okay) and. okay i’ll admit, sometimes i forget how fucking FUNNY this fic is, but it’s genuinely hilarious, okay? you gotta trust me on this. it makes me cackle at inappropriate times absurdly often. ("Hi." "Hi." "I want you, you fuck." is a top line. i laugh so hard every TIME.) all three of them are so incredibly in character, and somehow this NAILS the fact that they’re all massive disasters pretending to be confident. and i’m not someone that reads ~smut~ often (though it’s more mentioned than described, very non-explicit) but this didn’t make me even the least bit uncomfortable. it felt very natural and in character and made me laugh as much as the rest of the story. all in all, i always come away a little more in love with the characters, and that’s a really precious feeling.

i take back everything i’ve ever claimed. this IS the funniest piece of writing i’ve ever read, and it WILL remain so, probably until the day i die. i honestly... barely have words. my expectations were high when i started it, but in retrospect, they were LEAGUES below what i got. the characterisation, the progression, the dialogue, the story; from the overarching aspects to the tiny details, it’s impeccable. i genuinely read this twice in one day, and then again the next. every single part of it is so good, but in terms of FAVOURITES... the christmas section. hilarious. down to its bones, well crafted and heart felt. it hits me right in the chest every time. the story, from the beginning, has me just as in love with nancy and steve as jonathan is, and as everything grows more intense, so does my investment. it pulls me in and doesn’t let me go until it’s good and ready to see me leave. again, the sexy aspects are so in character and natural that it’s uncomfortable or weird to read and instead just leave me grinning like an idiot. also ( “It did frustrate me, in more ways than one. It’s also a weird plan, like … did you expect me to be so overwhelmed by the power of a boner that I’d just admit my feelings?” is SUCH a funny line, i think about it literally every day. literally. every. day.) the characters are afraid to be messy, to make mistakes, and they all feel so ALIVE that when i leave the story, i feel like i’m leaving a friend. it’s honestly beautiful and honestly breathtaking. this story is better than a lot of published books, honestly, and i’m so grateful for it. so thank you.

...you really wanted to make me cry, huh? i cried out of grief, yeah, out of the depth of nancy’s guilt and the pure rawness of her mourning, but i also cried out of catharsis as she came to terms, and out of laughter a few times. the bit about total eclipse of the heart as a motif was... that was so well done. i hate drawing comparisons, so please understand that this is criticism of a concept and not a particular story, but in so many stories then nancy’s grief feels... trivialised? that’s not quite the right word. romanticised, maybe. as someone who has lost a friend in the past, it’s just... it doesn’t feel realistic? and that’s okay, because it’s hard to nail something you haven’t experienced, and i wouldn’t wish the experience on anyone. it’s just that stories like this, where i can really resonate with nancy and follow the journey of her recovery WITH her are so rare. this story is a gem, it really is. i don’t love it for all the same reasons as the others, but i love it fiercely all the same.

sure, you could be the one is the funniest fic i’ll probably ever read, but nothing magic is such a close second. it’s laugh-out-loud, get-tears-in-your-eyes, fall-out-of-your-chair, and it’s also so goddamn SWEET i can hardly stand it. of the several fics i generally group together in my head (nothing magic, you could be the one + its sequels (might have to make an individual post about this series), laugh until we think we’ll die, and got nothing for you; all very similar, yet incredibly unique) nothing magic is the shortest, but that doesn’t mean it compromises on quality, oh no. it just means i can read it quicker, and therefore more often! when it’s late and i’m tired and i need a laugh to calm down before i sleep, i generally go search this fic up. remember when i mentioned the whole “being just as in love with nancy and steve as jonathan is” thing? it’s like that except... almost funnier. in you could be the one, it’s just that the story naturally tugs you into adoring these two messy, silly, sweet, amazing young adults, because how could you not? how else could you possibly feel? but here, they are genuinely just... that funny. they are actually just so funny that you as a reader click with them and find yourself grinning like an IDIOT because oh my god you’re disasters. maybe it’s the inherent relatability of a tired highschooler trying to make it through the summer and hating his job along the way, but this fic hits right in the heart every damn time.

and i can’t continue because that’s, like, barely halfway into the fic and i’ve already skipped so many of my favourite lines and i would have to skip so many more. you see what i mean about sathana being funny as hell? and like all the others, it’s not just the humour here. i mean... it is, because it’s SO FUCKING FUNNY I LITERALLY CANNOT SAY THAT ENOUGH but the reason it’s so funny is because it’s so candid. it’s so smooth. the whole thing flows. you’re not left feeling that you’ve missed a piece or that anything was sacrificed; you just feel like you’ve read something incredible. this fic is an experience of its own that i honestly have never experienced before. it’s sweet, and it’s gentle, and it’s just so overwhelmingly good that i don’t think i’ll ever quite get over it. in short? it’s a blessing. my expectations were high, but holy fuck did you blow them to bits.

one more favourite line:

Things are ending, things are starting, and everything looks bright. It won't always be that way. The sun's got to set at some point. But, gazing up at the sky, at the pink bleeding into orange, Jonathan figures it'll have to rise again. No matter what happens, these two things are constant.

Well. Maybe not just those two things.

that scene, in general, is beautiful, and it wraps the story up on such a genuine note. it feels like a film with how clearly i can picture it. it feels like no fic i’ve ever really read before. it feels... good. i guess i don’t really have the words. it just feels so good.

as an overall statement on why i call her my favourite author... it’s the realism. maybe that’s surprising, considering how many times i said “funny” or “hilarious” in here, but in the end, i wouldn’t be so attached to her work if it didn’t feel so real. i can open a tab and instantly get transported to a home i’ve never lived in. it’s comfortable. it’s sweet. and the dialogue/banter is always perfectly crafted. there’s just never really a downside to her fics, honestly. even if i wanted to search, i don’t think i’d find one. not even one of those “their only problem is that there’s not more to enjoy” kind of comments, because every single one feels perfectly crafted in its own right. it doesn’t need more or less. it stands for itself and it’s goddamn good at it.

i didn’t anticipate having to do multiple parts on this post, but- surprise surprise- i haven’t even gotten to my favourite one yet! so yeah, pt. 2 will be written after i finish the history essay trying to murder me, god knows when that is. in the meantime, please go give her some love and adoration. she deserves it.
