72 for the music ask
72- that unwanted animal by the Amazing Devil cw: song is explicit, both with swearing and references to sex wow!! floored someone got this one, but big strike! this is, despite the content warning, a song i actually already have a (totally sfw) song comic in progress for. as reward for finding it, here's a teaser!
Tumblr media
Oh, and you rip my ribcage open and devour what's truly yours And our screaming joins in unison, I cry out to the Lord 'Cause if we join our hands in prayer enough, to God, I imagine it all starts to sound like applause And you, you follow philosophies, but me, I laugh, I choke "Well, hello, my hollow Holofernes" I wink, but you don't get the joke
aaauughhhh GOD this song is perhaps the most incredible vibe i found this year, i think. won't be everybody's cup of tea but it's definitely mine. simultaneously so utterly haunting but a stone cold powerful sound, and so many violently emotive lyrics that it's nearly impossible to pick just one section. shipwrecks, feral creatures, religious references, consensual intimacy as violence, the holofernes line.. just like... damn
i also want to make this super clear:
the comic i'm working on for this is awtdy au related (though you could read it as general), but it utilises only the final lyrics about the god-child and the overall frightening/ominous vibe. it doesn't use any of the other lyrics that are more explicit or about relationships at all.
i would not really say that the rest of the song suits the au, i just enjoy the sound of it!

the visuals for the last like 20 minutes of atsv are my favorite things ever
specifically: the color theory
earth-42 is obviously striking on a whole nother level
Tumblr media
we tend to automatically think of red as the color of danger, but that's loud and passionate and angry. this haunting, sickening green feels more conniving and threatening and apocalyptic.
(if you think of color in disney movies, all the scariest, most cunning villains--maleficent, scar, ursula, evil queen, facilier, gothel--have either palettes or grand moments or motifs heavily utilizing green)
and something i always notice is that rio 42 looks just a little off, and it's because they reflect so much green in her eyes they look almost entirely green
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and, if this is your first time watching, you have no idea why the environment is made to be so deeply unsettling. let's look at gwen's dimension for a sec
being home is a really bad thing to gwen. while miles was doing everything he could to get home, gwen was literally dragged there--because gwen views her dimension as unsafe (ignore the trans parallels ignore the trans parallels ingore the tra
Tumblr media
it's dark. it has the same ominous rain. but you can tell it's 65. that bisexual lighting is unmistakable
i can't even go into the colors of gwen and george's argument because there is an image limit and i am lazy. but we know it's insane. the emotional peak of the scene is also where we see the colors most vibrant and changing the most abruptly
and when they have their beautiful lil moment, this is what happens
not only is it blindingly bright and trans colored all of a sudden, but the characters don their "true" coloring
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and even after gwen leaves, the scene is still bright, and familiar
Tumblr media
miles should be safe in his dimension. but we know he's not.
back to earth-42. well i mean we have these absolute visual bangers what do i need to say u get it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then there's this absolutely incredible moment where i would say miles is at his emotional peak (manic peak as well; i mean spot's hands and the infamous revenge line...yoikes.) and just like with gwen, the emotional high is where we see the most dynamic colors so coincidence i think not
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this next sequence is just one of the coolest fuckin chase-esq scenes i've ever seen. like the mumbattan one slapped but the pacing and direction and elements and epicness together here are just immaculate
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
another thing--miguel/ben's post is heavily shrouded in red. he's supposed to be ominously looming over exactly where miles is headed. buttttttttt~ when miles first crash lands, there is quite a bit of red, and as he gets closer to home, the city gets bluer and bluer with less and less red, bc yk he's not actually headed towards miguel/ben. woah. i make sense guys. i am a fart smella. i mean smart smella. i mean fart fella. i mean fart smella. i mea

Spoilers for the Ithaca Saga
PENELOPE!!! MY QUEEN I LOVE YOU!!!
Gosh, this saga is absolutely full of bangers. I’ll need to re-listen more times before I have a favorite, but I’m really vibing with Would You Fall In Love With Me Again. It’s just, the perfect love, reconciliation song. The olive tree! Ody admitting to the things he’s done! Penelope refusing to not see him as her husband, as long as his love for her remains the same!!!
Challenge was somehow even more wonderful than the demo with the more complex instruments.
We have two villain songs in this saga, both of them amazing!! Hold them Down is too amazing of a bop for such horrendous topic matters. How am I supposed to sing this song out loud near other people, Jorge? But also, Odysseus interrupting Antinous’ moment at the end by just killing one of the suitors (or him! I can’t tell without the visuals or the lyrics!) is too amazing, kkkk.
“Odysseus” is so ominous, I love it. Full monster Ody, I love you. That one suitor asking for forgiveness, for open arms, and then just being shut down is, ahdhaahsn. Aiming at the torches!! Ody learning from the monsters he faced through his journey how to perfectly fight back against the suitors! The hold them down being repeated!! Ody’s voice in the end is so dark!!!!
I can’t help but wonder about the visuals in this one. What happened with Telemachus in there? Why did Ody leave the armory unlocked 🤔. The suitors’ screams at the end, though. Awesome.
Still, my boy Telemachus in I Can’t Help But Wonder slayed, their reunion was so fricking emotional!!Telemachus’ uncertainty, his yearning for his father for his whole life! Odysseus really capturing the wind and sky for him (wind bag), how he made the storm (Poseidon) cry for him!!
AND MY GIRL ATHENA IS BACK!! I knew you weren’t dead, I believed in you!!
But also, their moment was so bittersweet. So goood. Their reverse character arc is so good!! Ody starts wanting to believe in open arms, while Athena is more ruthless and wants him to be too. Now, Athena wants to believe in a more hopeful world, where there is more empathy, but Ody went through too much to believe in such things anymore. Still, she is immortal, maybe she can create this better world in the future. AAAAAAA, so GOOD!
I can’t wait to see all of this with visuals. Still, I’m glad/sad to see the of this journessy.

For the yugioh character meme: Number 96!
Why I like them/why I don’t
Dark Mist is one of the characters who I am so sad didn’t get more screen time. He had an awesome debut and established himself as a threat immediately by taking Yuma hostage but then he’s just stuck in the key a while. He appears a bit but really doesn’t do much important stuff until his team up with Vector in season 3. BUT HES STILL SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He’s a number and he’s completely intelligent which literally no other number has shown the capacity to be I’d argue that it’s not cause he’s fused with Astral, he still planned a way to get into Yuma’s deck. The intelligence could come from the fact that he’s part Don Thousand and speaking of which wow do I wish that was expanded on more. Imagine being a fusion of two completely opposite people one of which is meant to destroy the other, thats an identity crisis just waiting to happen.
To conclude I guess I just like him cause he has so much potential for cool stuff
What I like about their appearance
*deep breath* ok this guys got a lot of appearances and I have varying opinions on them so this is gonna be my unofficial 96 forms ranking post in order of appearence
Beast 96
Tumblr media
We get this form for a grand total of one scene and it only exists so that Yuma will underestimate him further and let Dark Mist posses him. Pretty funny guy, I like the layering of the warm colors, it makes it look like he has a molten core
5/10 a bit to boring but its meant to be
Astral 2 evil edition
Tumblr media
Very solid design, likely cause it’s basically Astrals design and that one’s good too. The red face detailing makes him feel more distinct and is also a nice nod too his monster form
8/10 I think it’s funny that he doesn’t get censored in every scene like Astral does
Monster 96
Tumblr media
Mmmmmmmmmmmmm good. Zexal’s monster designs are always a treat and 96 is no exception. The sharp edges with the misty (haha) bits connecting them gives it a very cool haunted armor look and the flaming eyes are a nice pop of color.
10/10 absolutely sick
Barian powerup form
Tumblr media
Oh god oh no oh fuck oh god. All good things must come to an end and 96’s design streak comes to a screeching grotesque ugly as all sin halt. This design is a crime for many reasons but I’ll go one at a time. First off, WHY IS HE FLESHY??? I know its a thing for yugioh villians to have theyre veins poke out when they get extra evil but 96 is a combination of Astral and Don Thousand, arguably two of the more ethereal looking designs. It feels like they tried to mash Don Thousand, Vector, and Monster 96 all into one design and then failed horribly. The flesh boots and shoulder pads are meant to look like his monster design but it lacks the sharpness that made the original work. Theres also a bunch of ripple things? Why. I dont like them. He also just copied Vectors wings but they just look out of place. And lastly the purple lipstick that would be a cool element but with everything combined and Dr Fakers haircut makes him look like a clown. Rant over. Sorry.
Tumblr media
0/10 I’m glad he exploded
Corpse puppet
Tumblr media
Ok this one shreds actually. I actually think this is one of 96’s coolest designs and criminally underrated (then again when is he not) it’s a pretty fucked up parallel seeing as they both died, Astral got brought back by Yuma and meanwhile Dark Mist is having his corpse tossed around and repeatedly destroyed by Vector.
10/10 rad as all hell best creepy puppet in the show just too bad he’s a personality less husk
Do I prefer their dub names or original names?
Dark Mist vs Black Mist, they mean almost the same thing but I prefer Dark Mist cause it’s what I’m used too
OTP/NOTP/OT3
I honestly don’t think he should be dating anyone at all. He should be embezzling government funds and standing ominously in dark alleyways a romance with him involved would make everyone in it worse
Favourite card they use
I feel like basically all his cards are bangers. Giant germs the guy who originally had him used? Iconic, weird, stuck in my head ever since I first saw the episode. His weird utensil themed monsters who literally came out of nowhere? Hilarious, cute, why do even have those my man aren’t you the devil? 96 himself? Fucking awesome looking in monster form
Favourite moment they were in
Both his duels were very good but his debut/the Yuma hostage situation holds a special place in my heart as the most violent tv show episode I could get my hands on as a kid <3
Least favourite moment
……….. barian powerup transformation *shudders*

Oh, I EXTREMELY disagree and I am thrilled to finally have the chance to wordvomit about Mastermind because holy fucking shit Mastermind is so fucking good I just dhajowpfjejw
First of all, I think All 2 U is a really solid, very conventional song it would have absolutely no problem standing on its own outside of the show. Like, if All 2 U came on over the radio, nobody would bat an eye because it's cohesive, it's easy to digest, and the narrative is, for the most part, self-contained. It uses a very basic rhyming scheme, and the structure is equally simplistic, something like: chorus, chorus, verse, chorus. And honestly? That's my biggest problem with it, it's boring as fuck. Don't get me wrong, it's a banger, but it's the most generic banger in the whole show. It's basically Justin Bieber's "Baby" but in a heartfelt minor key.
In musical theater, a song is just as much of a rhetorical device, as a piece of dialogue or a bit of exposition is. The point of a song is to either move the plot forward, or to tell the audience something about the characters and their state of mind. That's why musical theater songs don't play randomly over the radio—they're not self-contained, they're designed to prop up The narrative of the story. Imagine sitting in your car, and Imagine Dragons latest hit finishes playing, then the radio announcer is like "Next up is the Act 1 Finale from Urine Town, by Mark Hollmann,"
Listen, the act One finale of Urine Town fucking slaps, it goes so fucking hard. But out of context? Gee, I can't imagine why people wouldn't enjoy the fucking revolutionary anthem of piss-city.
Mastermind doesn't work on its own. And I don't think it should, because Helluva Boss is a piece of musical theater and 90% of musical theater songs can't stand on their own. And the 10% that can? Theyre all specifically written to be played over the radio, to attract an audience to see the show. They're advertisements, you're designed to make money on spotify, not to serve a purpose in the show.
So now that you're looking at Mastermind from a musical theater perspective and not a "can I play this over the radio" perspective let me tell you why it's so fucking good:
1. Stolas' soprano is fucking insane. Listen, I'm a gay woman, but he hit that one high note in the first verse, and I came right in my pants.
2. The sinister key of the verses has me hook line and sinker. It's ominous, and very "nightmare before Christmas". It's fun and theatrical and a perfect representation of the ridiculous scheme Stolas is trying to pull off to save Blitzø. Even better, every once in awhile the song hits a very triumphant chord, I wish I knew exactly what court it was, but it goes from this very dark, minor, discordant cord to a very triumphant chord, indicating that stolas is the hero and it's just *chefs kiss*. Not only that, but at the end of the episode, they reprise it! They took the sinister Melody that was stolas defending Blitzø, and they turned it sweet and soft as Blitzø began to care for Stolas.
3. The key change when the song switches to Stolas' and Blitzø's internal monologues, is fucking phenomenal. It went from sinister and devilish in a "mustache twirling villain" kind of way, to absolutely heartbreaking, 80's powerrock ballad. Like, it's got some straight "Total Eclipse of the Heart"/"And I Will Always Love You" vibes, especially that bit with their semi-teansparent heads floating over the scene.
4. The duet??? Is so good??? The overlapping REPETITION is STUNNING "I'd rather be dead than live life without you,"/"I can't live life without you," and "I'll give my life to clean your slate"/"don't give your life to clean my slate". The way their lyrics reflect their major character themes: Stolas' being Blitzø heart, Stolas being the mastermind of his own fate, Blitzø being Stolas' light, Blitzø realizing he loved Stolas too late.
5. SATAN HOLY FUCKING SHIT THAT VOICE. The line where he calls them "Little Mice" literally gives me chills. The way he COMMANDS the song, dominates it, and stamps out any hope! The heavy, authoritative beat, the limited use of harmonies to empahise what an overwhelming presence he is...
I could go on and on and on but I won't
Controversial Opinion Time
All 2 U is 1000% better than Mastermind

I'M DONE. HERE. TAKE THESE CHAPTER 2 THOUGHTS AND RUN, BABY.
so i'll try to go in order here. uhhhh... there's a LOT i have to say. first: toriel giggling sprite my beloved
on that note, ALL THE NEW SUSIE SPRITES MY BELOVEDS
NOELLE YOU'RE SO GAY. I THINK THIS IS PROBABLY JUST BECAUSE I TOLD HER TO IN CHAPTER ONE BUT SHE GAVE SUSIE THE LUNCHBOX FULL OF CHALK!! I LOVE ITTTT
ralsei's, uh... kinda sus. the whole "recruiting" thing REALLY sketches me out. and he looks kinda... smug, all the time, like he knows what's going on.
LANCER JOINED! ROUXLS JOINED EVEN THOUGH NO ONE WANTED THAT! STARWALKER JOINED, TO EVERYONE'S JOY!
LIBRARY PORTALLLL
so before i entered the city there was that pre-city area? that looked very much like the city? except it had different music? and i thought they'd cut welcome to the city and i was SEVERELY disappointed. but then they didn't! just something i wanted to mention
NOELLE!!
throughout this game i went from despising berdly to feeling bad for him to not really liking him again, but not hating him as much as before. he'd better stay the fuck away from susie though
the queen is the best villain. she's the kind you love to hate! she's literally so funny AND her boss battle is actually tough (rip to the king but he just. wasn't a formidable enemy at all lol)
THE GANG CHARLIE BROWN DANCING TO WIN A FIGHT! SUSIE GAINING THE POWER TO ACT THROUGH SHEER FORCE OF WILL! SUSIE FORCING RALSEI TO LEARN TO ACT EVEN THOUGH HE DIDN'T WANT TO! THAT ENTIRE BATTLE WAS AMAZING! THE "BATTLE WON" END DANCING SEQUENCE! GOING INSANE GOING INSANE
the puzzles in this chapter were genuinely really impressive! i especially loved the word search puzzles and the ice-ee undertale word search reference💙
that being said. the mouse puzzles were SO fucking infuriating. i caused poor noelle a LOT of grief with those and i feel bad.
SPEAKING OF NOELLE!! the scene where she and kris are walking through the puzzle, the one that spells "december", and she's talking about when they were kids, how she loved sneaking out? beautiful. the cinnamon tography <3 also i guessed dess's full name was december a while ago and while i guess it was obvious, it's nice to have that confirmed!
also, i love that susie and ralsei are real friends in this chapter! he taught her a healing spell!!
ugh. fucking berdly. so smug and pretentious. i love queen's desire to be as far away from him as possible though
i also like his backstory. it gives his behavior, even if it's still annoying, at least some context. i get the feeling of feeling like if you're not smart, people will forget about you, and that's scary.
ALSO ALSO. GAMER BERDLY. LITERALLY EVERYTHING ABOUT THAT IS PERFECT. "I THOUGHT YOU WERE A GAMER!" "i only play mobile games, berdly." "NOOOOOO!" like i ADORE that
anyways. time for me to talk about the only thing that matters in this world: suselle. i mean, did the gays win in this chapter or DID THE GAYS WIN IN THIS CHAPTER?? THEY RODE A HEART-COVERED FERRIS WHEEL AND HAD A HEARTFELT, TENSION-FILLED CONVERSATION!
"did you ever wonder why the real susie never picked on you? well, maybe it's because... when you were both new to class, you lent her one of your pencils, like... maybe a dumb one with candy canes on it or something, and... even though it didn't actually taste like candy, she... remembered your smile." okay god thanks toby it's not like i needed my heart or anything
SERIOUSLY. TOBY "i'm gonna give the gays everything they want" FOX IS BACK WITH ANOTHER BANGER LADS
QUEEN'S BOSS BATTLE! ACTUALLY TOUGH, UNLIKE KING'S! AND GIGA QUEEN! I'M GOING INSANE THAT WAS SO SICK AND SO HARD
the way my heart BROKE when lancer turned to stone good god thank GOD our boy's okay
AND ROUXLS KAARD IN HIS PIRATE DUCK!! WITH HIS LITTLE HAT! DEMANDING THE QUEEN MAKE HIM BUTLER SUPREMETH! I LOVE HIM MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF
also!! kris and ralsei's little moment on the swan boat💙 i wasn't a kralsei shipper before but uh... that may be starting to change
it's hard because ralsei's still suspicious but at the same time i love him and want him to be happy. i don't know how to feel
also, if darkners outside of their dark worlds turn to stone after a while, why didn't ralsei? that's, uhhh... VERY sus. very weird. mr fox i need ANSWERS
WE FINALLY HAVE A WAY TO SAVE AFTER WE'VE FINISHED MOST OF THE EPILOGUE LADS. REJOICE!!
seriously the thing that peeved me about ch1 was that the last save point was on the battle stage and if i wanted to play the epilogue again, i had to. do that entire battle all over. BUT NOW THAT'S BEEN FIXED!!
UNDYNE AND ALPHYS HAVE MET UNDYNE AND ALPHYS HAVE MET THIS IS NOT A DRILL UNDYNE GAVE HER A BOX OF CANDIES EVERYBODY SHUT UP THEY'RE IN LOVE ALL IS RIGHT WITH THE WORLD
ALSO! NEAR THE BEGINNING! I FORGOT TO MENTION THE LITTLE WHITE DOG DOING DONUTS IN A TOY RACE CAR AND BACKING UP TRAFFIC! THANK YOU LITTLE WHITE DOG!
on that note: "looks like a car. this one has a man in it. he waves at you happily." AND THEN THE MAN'S GONE??? HEY TOBY???
ALSO. THE SEGMENT WHERE THE ANNOYING DOG HELPS US FIND THE KEY THROUGH THE POWER OF WANTON DESTRUCTION. THE BEST PLOT DEVICE!
TORIEL TEACHING SUSIE TO MAKE PIE STOP ITTTTT
and yes yes i KNOW kris slashed toriel's tires. that was extremely troubling. but THEY MADE PIE TOGETHER!!
"leave the chalk alone, kris" TORIEL!!
sans and toriel making egg puns and asgore running in and going "don't forget me, your eggs-husband!" is the FUNNIEST sitcom moment type thing ever. GOD.
on the other hand sans let me meet your brother god dammit i'll kill you
METTATONNNNNNN
RUDY... "who got you these flowers?" "is it weird for a married man to get flowers?" "so your wife did?" "oh, no! kris's dad did!" "...not even gonna try to understand this..." TOBY STOP ITTTT YOU'RE GIVING THE ASGORUDY SHIPPERS FALSE HOPE. YOU KNOW YOU'RE JUST GONNA KILL RUDY. YOU'RE JUST RUBBING SALT IN THE WOUND!
NUBERT! MY MAN!
seeing kris repeatedly they-themmed by multiple characters makes me so happy <3 poor kid... "college summer vacation when" "you opened the door with your eyes closed. you saw nothing" kris....
KRIS...
fucking. BLACK FOG STORM IN THE LIVING ROOM KRIS STOP IT. HOW'RE THEY GONNA REVEAL THIS WAS INNOCENT? THE KNIFE IN CHAPTER ONE WAS EASY BUT HOW WILL THEY EXPLAIN THIS
the staticy tv appearing in the dark and a toothy smile slowly fading into view in the center and lingering there ominously for far too long >>>>>>> every hollywood horror movie ever god. GOD
snowy and monster kid checking out the red door. implying there's something in there. something that kris knows about. knowing we won't get any more deltarune content for 5+ years does NOT fill me with determination
also. gaster's symbolic theme being mus_smile. and the final image in the game being a smile. god. gaster's COMING lads.
onionsan hears a song at night... a familiar song... memory, perhaps? or maybe a certain... four-note arpeggio that's hidden in a sound test room in undertale? who knows? guess we'll just have to wait for chapters 3/4/5.
this concludes my ramblings for now, but don't get it twisted- this is FAR from the last post i'll make about ch2. this whole chapter was absolutely amazing! brilliant! showstopping!! i'm genuinely soooo super impressed and excited for the chapter 3/4/5 bundle!!!

i made a desertduo playlist and then decided to be a nerd and write explanations for all the songs! like a nerd!
playlist link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5ZGylutQpyTbgX7MY7Lrzz?si=t8_kBwBHSYG5kxTvZoIrTQ&dl_branch=1
QUICK DISCLAIMER: i am aware that a lot of these songs may have or imply romantic connotation! i would really really like it if these were not read as though those romantic connotations carry over to scar and grian. even if we’re just talking about the third life characters, i would prefer not to ship them or imply romance between them on this post. thank you so much and keep reading if you’d like to see the playlist analysis!
and now that that’s out of the way, PLAYLIST TIME!
passerine- the oh hellos
“you were the song that i’d always sing/you were the light that the fire would bring/but i can’t shake this feeling that i/was only pushing the spear into your side again”
this song really just... firstly, it’s one of my favorite songs, and the line i chose there pushes home the sort of terrified devotion i think the desert has. plus there’s a fun line about the cold wind blowing in from the north in the ending bits that i think very much fits their conflict with the red army, and a lot of legally obligated flight imagery that i need to have in every possible song because i’m a fuckin nerd.
no children- the mountain goats
“i hope that our few remaining friends/give up on trying to save us/i hope we come up with a failsafe plot to piss off the dumb few that forgave us”
i will admit that no children isn’t a perfect fit, but the general vibe of sort of defiant pessimism and betrayal fits very well with them! it’s very triumphant in its death, and i think that is very desertcore, because what’s more triumphantly dead than being the last duo left alive?
skulls- bastille
“when all of our friends are dead and just a memory/it’s always been just you and me/for all to see”
okay like this entire song is SO MUCH DESERT VIBES? LIKE SO MUCH. if i were to ever make an animatic for them i’d do it with this song. “a match is our only light, it’s day of the dead i’m indiana jones, yeah,” “i hope you can make me laugh six feet under when we’re bored of each other,” “i don’t want to rest in peace, i’d rather be the ghost that annoys you,” IT JUST KEEPS GOING. i think this song would work well with any third life duo, honestly, but these two in PARTICULAR just because of how it ended with them literally ‘buried’ next to each other, and again, the chaotic death vibes.
freaking out- mystery skulls
“i just keep out of my tongue/til all you want is done/and you just wanna leave me, oh yeah”
this song is a very third life grian song to me in particular! it could be my bias because of my little headcanon of grian burning on his red life, but seriously, this song is very reminiscent of the back and forth of loyalty that grian has with scar. the above line is sort of representative of the betrayal on red, and of course grian’s life debt.
night running- shin sakiura
(this song is in japanese! these lyrics are the rough english translation i found on google.) “someday we will stand at this place once again/for sure we will stand up again and again/we will watch it will the end/i want you to live freely”
this song is actually the ending theme for the anime bna, which i adore, and i just added it on a whim before looking at the translated lyrics. but um. holy hell the lyrics hurt me because they’re about running in search of someone, running for no reason, looking for something, and it just really hit, because the desert never really had a goal! they didn’t expect to survive, they were trying to survive, but what was their longterm goals? nothing. so that sort of endless search felt fitting for this. plus the song is a parallel for the two estranged best friends of the show so! perfect.
summer nights- siames
“it’s summertime/singing al green in your car/heading to a party/and the night air feels alive”
okay again, i will admit this song is mainly on here because i absolutely love it, but i also do think it fits well. it’s also about healing/estranged friendships, with a very distinct feeling of nostalgia for a happier time. maybe for a time when this was all a game, when there was no blood or betrayals on their hands. little canon divergent, but it’s fun for me, so into the playlist it goes!
allies or enemies- the crane wives
“are we allies or enemies/this will be the death of me, this will be the death of me/all’s fair in love and war but i can’t fight with you anymore”
. i just. points to that lyric. it literally led to both of their deaths. are they allies or enemies? it also fits with scar still wanting grian to be his friend even after he’s no longer indebted with the line “what happens now? do we have another go, do we bow out?” another very good animatic song that i’ve considered heavily. i listen to this playlist a lot
burn him down- kitsch club
“you must destroy, oh you must destroy, beyond all recognition/you gotta burn him down, you gotta burn him down, beyond all recognition”
this song just has a lot of fire and arson and high energy vibes. my little war criminals look at them go
rose- the oh hellos
“what's true is like a sickle/it'll cut you to the middle/your rose is without a thorn/but no, my mouth don't taste of metal/from the pot here to the kettle/i think we got a lot we gotta learn”
this one is like the exact opposite vibe of burn him down. the oh hellos are so poetic and this song just... feels like the healing potions after a battle. many of the metaphors here fit, i think
lone digger- caravan palace
“hey, brother, what you thinking/that good ol' sound is ringing/they don't know what they're missing/(they call it lonely diggin')”
okay this song is straight up just a dance song. i added it because i like it and also for some reason it feels ominous to me? i’ve got no idea why, it’s seriously just a club song, but it’s a banger and it’s in this playlist because i said so
feed the machine- poor man’s poison (suggested by my friend argonaughtkeene!)
“somethin’s goin” on, just look around/fear is on the rise, and there’s blood all over the ground/let’s all just blindfold the poor, we all know what’s in store/ we got ‘em now, just break ‘em down a little bit more”
this song is a VIBE for both desertduo members. there’s parts for both of them. it’s ruthless, gritty, very maniacal, perfect. listen to it and you’ll immediately understand why i added it.
sweet tooth- scott helman
“i hold hands with cosmic entities/i’ll take this two-ride if i please/i got this sweet tooth baby, yeah i got this sweet tooth baby/i exploit my opportunities/some broken hearts, some cavities”
sweet tooth is super upbeat and bright with these strangely dark lyrics? like i’m pretty sure it’s about addiction. in any case, i thought the “i hold hands with cosmic entities” very funnily fitting for both of the desert boys. it’s a banger!
necromancin’ dancin’- bear ghost
“when i’m necromancin’, everyone’s dancin’/nobody can stop me, i dare you to try/the dead are infused with insatiable groove and they’re coming for you, there’s nowhere to hide”
necromancin’ dancin’ just. bastard vibes. there’s not much more to say it’s just huge villain song vibes. i adore it.
crazy = genius- panic! at the disco
“if crazy equals genius/then i’m a fucking arsonist/i’m a rocket scientist/if crazy equals genius/you can set yourself on fire/but you’re never gonna burn, burn, burn”
i. yeah. y. yeah. more bastard vibes. also shoutout to an artist i saw (i think it was strifesolution?) who made a desertduo piece to this song because i have not stopped thinking about it ever
sweet bod- lemon demon
“i’m diggin’ up your coffin/and pouring out the contents/your sexy, sweet solution/is ripe for distribution”
you know how i said freaking out was a grian song? this one is a scar song. it’s my favorite lemon demon song and also it has the total macabre capitalism vibe that third life scar NAILED. more bastard vibes good for him <3
drunk- the living tombstone
“feel so much better than usual/i feel indisputable, oh/but now i’m feeling so beautiful/don’t wake me up from this spell i’m under, if i’m still breathing/i know that i will be ugly when i feel like myself again, oh/but right now i’m feelin’ so beautiful”
the descent of this song, starting off with a polite gathering and ending with a gasping drunk in the parking lot gazing at the stars that he can barely see? yes. yeah. mhm. i used a line from this song for a fic, actually, it fit so well.
oh no!- marina
“one track mind, one track heart/if i fail, i’ll fall apart/maybe it is all a test/cos i feel like i’m the worst so i always act like i’m the best”
bubbly pop track about false confidence, the ruthlessness of the pop industry, and the influence of the media? you know why this is here. it vibes. it rocks.
do it all the time- i don’t know how but they found me
“we’re taking over the world/a little victimless crime/and when i’m taking your innocence/i’ll be corrupting your mind/no need to cry i’m only doing everything i want to do because i do it all the time”
EVEN MORE BASTARD VIBES! SOMEHOW THERE IS MORE! this playlist is half villain songs and half heart-wrenching ballads and that’s the real desert experience i think.
the phoenix- fall out boy
“i’m gonna change you/like a remix/then i’ll raise you/like the phoenix”
BATTLE SONG BATTLE SONG! i’ll be honest i partially chose this song because i am a huge sucker for phoenix grian imagery in particular, but it’s also just a very good war song for them. villain song no 18372948 except this one originally had a hero vibe and now it’s changed specifically for them?? wild. their power
the other side- the greatest showman
“right here, right now/i’ll put the offer out/i don’t wanna chase you down, i know you see it/you run with me/and i can cut you free/out of the treachery/and all you keep in”
scar and grian’s desert monopoly conversation went exactly like this canonically because i said so fuck you <3
icicles- the scary jokes (suggested by my friend demizorua!)
“icicles don’t soften when they die/so why should i, why should i?/oh, icicles don’t soften when they die/they sharpen into sabers and they stab you in the eye”
this song actually has specific parts for both grian and scar! my cool epic friend mx demizorua pointed both of them out to me and i adored it so much. it’s a very spiteful song, just like the desert boys. also it feels vaguely murderous. perfect
problems- mother mother (suggested by my friend demizorua!)
“i’m a loser, a disgrace/you’re a beauty, a luminary, in my face”
literally this entire song fits them. particularly their relationship with the flower husbands, to me, honestly— the whole “when we meet at the pearly gates/you’ll get the green light/and i’ll get the boot in the face” reminds me a lot of them hdksjdks
tongues and teeth- the crane wives
“i know that you mean so well/but i am not a vessel for your good intent/i will only break your pretty things/i will only wring you dry of everything”
h. yeah. this song is literally gaslight gatekeep girlboss and i attribute it to the desert for that reason alone. songs to commit murder to!
you’re nobody til somebody wants you dead- saint motel
“you’re nobody til somebody wants you dead/and the list, it grows, and grows, and grows/it grows, and grows, and grows/and grows, and grows, and grows/until it’s everyone you’ve ever known”
this one is very self-explanatory. enemies pogchamp
curses- the crane wives
“there’s a fire in my brain and i’m burning, love/oh my, oh my/keep running to the sink, but the well is dry/oh my, oh my/every word i say is kindling/but the smoke clears when you’re around”
okay again! this one has two very specific parts for both of them. grian’s the first verse, which is above, and scar’s the second verse!! i really do like my fire imagery for these two don’t i? well, i blame them for having a fuck ton of tnt on them at all times and literally burning their enemy’s banners as a final act of defiance.

April l was apparently the month for me to revisit some children’s authors who are steeped in controversy at the moment. So here’s my hot (well, lukewarm) takes on issues that absolutely do not need a single other person talking about them. Also some actual good books that I read this month!
Tumblr media
Badger in the Basement
The Animal Ark books are a childhood classic — though I recently found out that apparently there’s a difference between American and British publications, and the American versions didn’t include a lot of actual COOL animals which is… bizarre. As a Canadian stuck in the middle of this, this nonsense drives me nuts. This one was about the main character, the daughter of pair of vets, trying to protect a local badger sett from men wanting to participate in badger digging and baiting. These books are always feel-good, and it was a nice single-day-read while I waited for a library book to come in.
Tumblr media
Chi’s Sweet Home
The cutest manga series about the misadventures of a little kitten, Chi, who has been adopted by a loving family. I’ve never bothered to read them in order, but apparently this time I stumbled across the last in the series -- whoops! Still, stood on it’s own pretty easily, and it was a fun read! Things get tense when the family realize that they may have found Chi’s original home… and may have to give up Chi forever.
Tumblr media
Earth Before Us: Dinosaur Empire!
This was an odd graphic novel, I feel like I’m not sure who the target audience was exactly. It was a nonfiction comic done in a Magic School Bus style, with the purpose of teaching current, up-to-date facts about the animals that lived in the Mesozoic Era. If you’re into dinosaurs, you’ll probably enjoy this! The art is absolutely adorable, I love the dinosaur illustrations, and I learnt some really neat facts. That being said, the pages are really dense, and there’s a lot of info crammed in… some of it will probably go way over a child’s head without specific additional teaching or a very strong personal interest. But that being said, a dinosaur obsessed kid is still probably going to really dig this… as would a dinosaur obsessed adult. It wasn’t my cup of tea exactly but I’m sure it is someone’s.
Tumblr media
assorted Dr Seuss Books
I love these types of controversies because it means getting to listen to every moron who has never had an opinion on Dr Seuss ever start generating a mile of them out of the aether. So many people are so mad about the six books that are getting retired and I bet most of them haven’t even read them. These are not the friggin Cat In The Hat or The Lorax or even the likes of Yertle The Turtle. I was raised by a grade one teacher, was a voracious reader who loved Dr Seuss, and wrote my university thesis on children’s literature, and I still only knew two of the six books on that list. So by all means, if you want to write an essay explaining why those specific books are worth clinging to, feel free, but if you haven’t even heard of them maybe it’s not a big deal. *grumble*
Anyway, my grousing aside, it gave me the urge to reread a bunch of Seuss books, including the two retiring books I personally knew: McElligot’s Pool and To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street. I do still enjoy both, especially McElligot’s Pool which always sparked my imagination, but it’s obvious why they’re being retired and I personally think it’s the right choice. There’s so much good kidlit out there, we can survive without these.

Goodbye, My Rose Garden
A f/f romance manga, fairly standard fair though cute if you’re looking for some historical angst, pretty dresses, and mutual pining. A young Japanese woman moves to England in the hopes of meeting a writer (Mr Frank) who she has long admired. Along the way she is employed by an enigmatic woman with plenty of money, rumours, and melancholy following her. I’ll be honest, uncut romance isn’t really my genre, but I’ll probably still try to the second book to see if the story picks up.

From The Holocaust to Hogan’s Heroes: The Autobiography of Robert Clary
It’s no secret that I’ve been on a Hogan’s Heroes kick. This is the autobiography of Roberty Clary, who plays my favourite character in the show, Louis Lebeau. And holy shit what a life this man has had. He was a Jew growing up in France before the start of the war, and who was one of many children taken away from his family and sent off to the concentration camps in Germany. This was an amazing, intense, inspiring, and heartbreaking read… it has Clary’s voice all over it, and it tells everything from the charming childhood he had, to the horrors of the concentration camps, the brutality of survival, and then about his exciting journey into the entertainment industry afterwards. It’s an experience, would recommend if you’re a fan of the show.
Tumblr media
The Ickabog
The second controversial author I read this month. Originally I was going to give Rowling’s new book a miss, given everything that’s been going on over the past few years, but in the end my curiosity got the better of me. Politics aside, it was a fun read! Not groundbreaking, but enjoyable enough and written in an interesting style. It didn’t read the same as a lot of modern kidlit, it felt more like a cross between a classic fairytale and a Dahl book. Perhaps a bit like Despereaux. It tells the tale of how an idyllic country gradually falls into ruin through the ignorance, inaction, and greed, and how a supposedly fictional monster hides the very real, human monsters at the heart of the country. It was cute and pleasant and I’m glad I decided to get it from the library, though for anyone who is choosing not to engage for political reasons: you aren’t missing anything major.
Tumblr media
Franklin In The Dark
A Canadian classic. I don’t think there’s a single person my age who hasn’t read or been read a pile of these books, and the nostalgia is so comforting. I found this on Youtube and listened to someone read it to me, and honestly 10/10 would recommend for a calm evening.
The big reason I decided to seek this one out though, was because I finally got to the M*A*S*H episode that inspired this entire series! In the episode C*A*V*E, in which Hawkeye is freaking out over his claustrophia while the camp is forced to take shelter in a nearby cave during some intense shelling, he mentions that if he had been born a turtle he would have been afraid of his own shell, and that the other turtles would make fun of him cause he’d be forced to walk around in his underwear. And so this first story about a young turtle who’s afraid to sleep in his own shell and drags it around behind him. So if you were ever curious, Franklin the Turtle is in fact named after Dr Benjamin Franklin Pierce. (this is also why the French version is named Benjamin!)
Tumblr media
Wolves of the Beyond: Lone Wolf
I loved the Guardians of Ga’Hoole books as a kid but I never read the Wolves of the Beyond series. This first book was an interesting read, Lasky does a great job creating worlds and societies for the animals that inhabit them. Lone Wolf is about a deformed wolf cub who was abandoned in the wilderness to die. And he would have, if a desperate mother bear, who had recently had her only cub killed, hadn’t stumbled across him and saved him, vowing to raise him as her own...
Tumblr media
Petals
A “silent” graphic novel. It has beautiful artwork and is told entirely through pictures, no text at all. It’s loves and heart-wrenching, though it left me feeling somewhat unsatisfied… I felt like there should have been more. Still, a neat story.
Tumblr media
The Southern Book Club‘s Guide To Slaying Vampires
What a banger of a novel!! I can’t recommend this one enough. It’s about a group of suburban mothers in the ‘80s who form a book club out of a shared need for community and a love of grisly true crime novels. But when a strange drifter appears in town and starts setting down roots… and when children begin disappearing… these women need to band together to confront the horrors that have invaded their neighbourhood, and face down not only a terrifying monster among them but the patriarchal system that allows it to flourish. To quote the preface:
“Because vampires are the original serial killers, stripped of everything that makes us human — they have no friends, no family, no roots, no children. All they have is hunger. They eat and eat but they’re never full. With this book, I wanted to pit a man freed from all responsibilities but his appetites against women whose lives are shaped by their endless responsibilities. I wanted to pit Dracula against my mom.    As you’ll see, it’s not a fair fight.“
Tumblr media
The Weirn Books: Be Wary of the Silent Woods
I love Chmakova’s graphic novels, though I’ve only ever read her slice-of-life middle grade series before. This one is pure fantasy and very fun. It’s about two cousin “weirns” — witches with demon familiars — who attend the local night school. Things get strange though when an ominous figure appears outside the old, abandoned school house deep in the Silent Woods, and begins tempting children down its path…
I’m very much looking forward to word of a second book and was honestly kind of surprised that I haven’t heard more about this book given how popular her other series is. This has all the same charm and quirks but for those of us who prefer stories based in fantasy rather than reality.
And A Bonus...
For some masochistic reason I got a Garfield book out of the library. Jeez, if I didn’t love these as a kid, I found them absolutely laugh out loud hilarious, and now I just don’t see it anymore. But here I will share the one strip in the book that actually made me laugh

Album & EP Recommendations
Ghosts On Tape by Blood Red Shoes
For me, Brighton-based indie-rock duo Blood Red Shoes, consisting of drummer Steven Ansell and guitarist Laura-Mary Carter, have long been one of the UK’s most underrated bands.
From their angsty and raw early releases Box of Secrets and Fire Like This, to their moodier and more refined later releases like their eponymous fourth album and 2018’s Get Tragic, the duo have been pretty consistent with their output over the last 14 years. However, with last year’s brilliant Ø EP and the subsequent singles building up to this - the release of their sixth studio album - the band were threatening to be on the cusp of releasing their best work to date. Thankfully, they have made good on that promise as Ghosts On Tape is a cohesive and imaginative record, packed wall-to-wall with fun, atmospheric bangers.
From the get-go the pair will have you absolutely hooked in thanks to the incredible, ominous opener Comply. With its gentle piano melody, Ansell’s increasingly aggressive, distorted vocals and a growing pulse of dread that backdrops the track, it is a phenomenal starter track - the accompanying film for which you can watch above. From there, the band then launch into single Morbid Fascination, one of my top songs of 2021. A synth-driven banger with an infectious, buzzy guitar riff on the chorus, it is a mesmerising slice of the finest indie-pop. Recent single Murder Me then follows, propelled by a stinging guitar riff, a thunderous drum beat and a spooky bit of organ. If you didn’t expect it before, the duo let you know on this brilliant opening three track run that they fully intend to live up to the Ghosts On Tape billing.
The pair then keep the big tunes coming with the downbeat haze of Begging, the growling guitars of I Am Not You and the AM-era Arctic Monkeys thump of I Lose Whatever I Own also impressing. However if I were to pick two early favourites, the first would be the straight-up punk rock of Give Up, which comes complete with whirring synths and an oddly cinematic outro. The second would be the shimmering, synth-soaked majesty of Sucker, where Laura-Mary belts out the earworm chorus of “I’m a sucker for your love” over some wonderfully melodic instrumentation. That’s another key thing here, whether its Steven or Laura-Mary on vocal duties, every time you’ll get a powerful vocal performance where the tone matches the mood of the track just perfectly. By the time closer Four Two Seven rolls around with its clapping back-beat, menacing synths and eerie vocal textures, Ghosts On Tape will have long since won you over.
This is undoubtedly a career-best effort from Blood Red Shoes, with the pair pushing their sound into fascinating new territory whilst still managing to bring it altogether into a tightly sewn, coherent package. Ultimately it all makes for a mightily entertaining front-to-back listen - like hopping on a Ghost Train you’ll just want to ride on again and again.

Fix Yourself, Not The World by The Wombats
Elsewhere this week, The Wombats, another stalwart of the late-00s indie boom, also returned with their fifth studio album - Fix Yourself, Not The World (FYNTW). Much like Blood Red Shoes, the Liverpudlian trio have managed longevity where their peers of that era have long fallen flat. They’ve achieved this by pumping out consistently great records over the last decade, with each new Wombats album coming complete with a catalogue of excellent singles that would make most other bands green with envy. And this new record, aside from possibly 2011’s This Modern Glitch, represents arguably their most stacked release to date in terms of big hitters.
For fans of the band’s USP of dark, emo lyricism backdropped by gleeful indie-pop tunes, you’ll be pleased to hear that The Wombats mostly stick to that tried and tested formula throughout here. If you come for any adventurous sonic leaps then you will probably leave disappointed, however the stellar melodies, bouncy riffs and hook-laden choruses may be just enough to win you over – and there are plenty of those!
On the singles front, there’s the brilliant spiritual title track Everything I Love Is Going To Die, where frontman Matt Murphy delivers some typically sharp, lockdown-inspired lyrics over a catchy back-beat. There’s also the meaty, almost-grunge-like riffs of Ready For The High, which ends with some triumphant horn-playing towards the back-end of the track. If You Ever Leave I’m Coming With You then sees Murph lament depression putting a strain on his relationship, with a typically infectious chorus refrain and powerful lyrics like “Am I losing you in the dark, baby?”
However, out of all these great tracks, it is still lead single Method to the Madness that strikes the biggest chord with me, with it quickly becoming my favourite Wombats song the more I play it. Initially built on some downbeat, minimal instrumentation, the track steadily builds throughout, eventually erupting in a seismic final minute where Murph yells out the glorious refrain of:
“Fuck my sadness, and fuck your roleplay, No construction, I'll build it my own way, No more subscribing, and no reviews. Fuck our options, and fuck the life plan, No more worry, I killed it with both hands, Just give me something to light the fuse.”
It’s just brilliant and outside of the big singles there’s plenty of other great moments to enjoy too, such as the bluesy riffs of People Don’t Change People, Time Does and the psychedelic Madchester-style groove of Work Is Easy, Life Is Hard. The super infectious Wildfire is then arguably the best of the non-released tracks, with its instant chorus, hypnotic synth breakdown midway through and ultra-catchy central guitar riffs.
Although there are admittedly a couple of less memorable moments scattered in here too, for the most part The Wombats deliver the goods, with a particular strong middle section ensuring this one is still well worth your time. With several of their best tracks yet and plenty more festival-ready anthems to enjoy, this one is just great fun.

Are We Gonna Be Alright? by Fickle Friends
From old-school indie darlings to the new-school then, with Brighton-based quartet Fickle Friends also releasing their excellent sophomore album this week. Having broken out with their hit-laden first album You Are Someone Else which boasted no less than eight(!) singles, the band build on the success of that debut with Are We Gonna Be Alright?
Their knack for writing a killer hook remains at the fore, but their songwriting and sound has noticeably matured too, with the band not always taking the obvious route and more inclined this time around to move their songs into unexpected territory instead. With their debut mostly synth-driven, it’s also great to hear some big and bold riffs make an appearance all across this one.
From the shimmering 80s funk of opener Love You To Death, the glitchy pop instrumentation of Not Okay to the straight-up anthemic rock of Yeah Yeah Yeah, Fickle Friends frequently bounce between styles whilst still retaining their own identity. In terms of early favourites, it would be the pop-punk of Write Me A Song with its guitar-shredding chorus, along with the stunning piano-driven title track, which feels like a bit of an unintentional lockdown anthem.
All in all, this is a terrific second album from Fickle Friends with plenty of catchy tracks and noticeable growth from their previous effort – I’m already looking forward to the next one.

Fragments by Bonobo
Stepping out of the indie zone now and onto electronica, as musician/producer Simon Green, aka Bonobo, released his mesmerising seventh studio album this week, titled Fragments. Opening on Polyghost, a blissful, orchestral collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, this soon transitions into the wonderful electronic majesty of Shadows, with singer Jordan Rakei on vocal duties. The familiar sounds of Rosewood then arrive, with its soulful sample and laidback groove that remains one of my favourites on the whole record.
From there the album effortlessly bounces between the upbeat and the tranquil, with the string-drenched ambient sounds of Elysian, the playful whirring of Age of Phase and house track Sapien all standing out. The album then ends with the dance/soul mashup of Day by Day, a glorious collaboration with American musician Kadhja Bonet.
Whilst this one won’t set the world alight, Bonobo has still crafted plenty of fascinating soundscapes to explore, making for the perfect chill out record if you need one this week.

Also out, also great: Sick by Earl Sweatshirt (Rap/Hip Hop), Hop Up by Orlando Weeks (Indie/Alternative, Ex-Maccabees frontman second solo album)
Tracks of the Week
More Pressure by Kae Tempest (featuring Kevin Abstract)
Without a doubt the best single you’ll hear this week is the new one from Kae Tempest as they prepare their new album The Line Is A Curve for a May release. A wonderful collaboration with Brockhampton’s Kevin Abstract, it features both him and Kae delivering their spoken verse over an infectious synth-driven beat and tongue-twisting refrain of “more pressure, more release, more relief, more belief.”
Utterly dazzling from start to finish and one I have already played countless time this week – roll on the album!

Nurture by Kyla La Grange
Singer-songwriter Kyla La Grange continues the build towards her much anticipated return with this beautiful new track. Deeply intimate and autobiographical, Kyla has said of the track:
“Nurture is the most personal song I've ever written - a storybook of relationships, from childhood to adulthood. I nearly didn't record it because it made me cry too much, and I was scared to release it because it feels so raw and exposing, but something about the writing of it felt very necessary for me - like it was a way of paying tribute to certain things and then closing a door on them, putting them to bed."
A must hear this one!
Listen here
World’s Unluckiest Guy by Swim Deep
Also on the verge of a comeback are Brummie indie outfit Swim Deep, who this week delivered their brilliant collaboration with Australian singer Hatchie. With an instantly catchy chorus and some very welcome summery vibes, it is just the track to get you through those awful January blues.
Listen here
Love Is Selfish by Jack White
And finally this week, having blown me away with Taking Me Back at the back end of last year as the first single from upcoming album Fear of the Dawn, music’s mad scientist has returned with another new track, this time the first single from his second album due out in 2022 – Entering Heaven Alive.
This first taste gives a slight glimpse as to what White might be plotting with these two new albums, with Love Is Selfish a stripped-back bluesy affair - a noticeable contrast to the rock-driven buzz of Taking Me Back. I’m not always a fan of the acoustic/electric split double albums, but if Mr. White keeps pumping out tunes this good, I might soon make an exception.

Text
as you all know, i feel a lot of things about cats (2019).... so i made a playlist about it. here’s the tracklist, explained in full detail:
Listen to the playlist here! (x)
Stabat Mater from The Liberation of the Gothic
We must start strong; thus, we begin with a solemn lament.
Rossini: Duetto buffo di due gatti (Cat Duet)
Continuing with the classical music vibe, but with a twist. Have you ever heard cats sing opera?
Meow Mix Theme
30 seconds of the worst thing you’ve ever heard. It’s better to go into this without knowing anything about this.
Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines from Sounds of the Circus South Shore
A clown song for a clown of a movie. I was tempted to put every single song from this clown group’s discography, but I figured one ode would suffice.
Pussycat Meow by Deee-Lite
Ngl this track slaps. It’s awful, but it slaps. We stan dance music mixed with terrible meows in the background.
The Bad Touch by Bloodhound Gang
This is a sex song. A really bad one. Because I feel like that’s the energy that the entire movie just... radiates, you know? Also it’s 4:20 long, which I think is yet another excellent and justifiable reason for me to add this track.
Scatman (ski-ba-bop-ba-dop-bop) by Scatman John
Absolute gibberish. What more can I say?
Blue (Da Ba Dee) by Eiffel 65
A nonsensical, classic song for a nonsensical, classic film.
Axel F by Crazy Frog
The most annoying yet iconic song to perfectly match the most annoying yet iconic movie of all time.
We like to Party! (The Vengabus) by the Vengaboys
The orgy scene. Need I say more?
What’s New Pussycat? by Tom Jones but 7 times in a row, followed by 1 It’s Not Unusual... along with What’s New Pussycat? twice more
Thought it would be funny to include a bit of a John Mulaney reference, but I didn’t want to *overdo* it so...
Winter Wonderland by Christmas Cats
Yes. This is another song where cats are singing. Except it’s tone deaf and doesn’t slap like the initial cat duet I put near the beginning of the playlist. It makes me want to scratch my ears out.
Nyan Cat Theme
Such an awful, iconic song.
Go on by Top Cats
Okay this is actually a good song. I just included it because it has lowkey horny vibes and that’s what Cats (2019) is, at its core.
Vaya Con Dios by The Cats
This song encapsulates the town that the cats in the movie hang around. Kind of dark, kind of sad, yet hopeful in a sense. Another slapper.
Kitty by Snail’s House
I needed to add a cutesy instrumental, alright? There needs to be a hint of playfulness and childishness in this playlist.
The Rum Tum Tugger from Cats the Musical
I had to include this song, alright? And it fits perfectly after the song I mentioned prior!
A Wonderful Awful Idea by Danny Elfman
Another instrumental, except this one is much more ominous and it’s from the Grinch soundtrack.
Bitches Brew by Crosses
Yet another ominous and dark track. It works, trust me.
I Can’t Stop Farting by The Queers
This song slaps and is also completely pointless, just like the movie!
Kitty Empire by Big Black
“When the cat’s away, it’s a regular rat day. When the rat’s away, King cat can play.” BARS
this s*it will fcuk you up by Combichrist
This is a BANGER of a song, and also perfectly describes my sentiments towards the movie :’) It’s also kinky as hell.
Ascension by Moses Sumney
As the playlist comes to an end, we come to take a moment to reflect on the grief with which this movie has given us.
Lament by Teodor Wolgers
Piano instrumental. Very sad. Much lamentation.
Everything Is Awful by the Decemberists
Do I even need to say anything about this? Also, the song is a BOP.
The Jellicle Ball from Cats the Musical
I needed to end this playlist with the song that plays during the orgy scene. Surely, you all understand why. This track is a masterpiece. Absolute perfection. Creepy, horny, grandiose, everything you could ever ask for in a playlist finale!
Thank you for reading this... and I’m sorry for this monstrosity.

The Grateful Dead, White Album, and Metallica!
☆ The Grateful Dead — What’s your favorite head canon for any character?
Oooh, tough one. There’s a lot I have when it comes to head canons, a lot that don’t necessarily align with popularity. One of them, before I was fully into JJBA, is I stumbled across a psychologist (a student, rather) discussing Doppio from VA.
Having always been interested/invested in abnormal psychology - a lot of what the video spoke about was that Doppio was the original host - and that Diavolo developed as a way to protect Doppio after his traumas.
This is exceptionally common in those with DID - the original/host personality is softer and no where near as intense, polarizing, and hostile as Diavolo was represented - and it shows with how King Crimson takes action to protect Epitaph.
Other head canons I have are that Polpo & Risotto are related, Risotto is at least part Turkish or Middle Eastern, That there are other pillar folk still alive, and that Star Platinum & The World are shades of Jonathan Joestar.
☆ White Album — What are your favorite tracks from the OST? (All parts!)
I will easily say that the opening for Battle Tendency, Bloody Stream, is one of my absolute favorites. As is ‘Awake’ (more commonly known as the Pillarmen’s Theme) The opening for BT is such a peppy, intense bop. Battle Tendency being one of my favorite parts so far also helps. ;)
SDC’s ‘Repose of Souls’ & ‘Space of a Lone God’ also have eerie, unnerving feelings that make me day dream like crazyyyyy. And ‘Tyrant of Servants’ is *AMAZING* - I tend to gravitate towards hardcore/violent/dark edm and this is an amazing fight song to jam to. SDC is full of bangers.
VA’s tracks… ‘Tensione’ & ‘Passione’ are both sooooooo ominous and a little bit frightening. I adore it. The same for ‘Misterioso’! ‘Specchio’ is another song that doesn’t seem to be afraid to go hard and dark.
While although Doppio’s and Diavolo’s theme songs play as if they are one, the first bit, Un'altra Persona, I found far more to my liking. And the same for Epitaffio and Doppio! There are these trilling, disharmonic sounds in those that make me feel uneasy and I reallllly love how they make my hair stand on end.
☆ Metallica — What fight were you most surprised by?
This is going to sound super plebeian, but I was actually surprised by the final fight between Jonathan and Dio - especially as many seem to be affected far more by other deaths/fights.
For some context, I walked into JoJo not knowing that it was the story that killed off main characters. The loss of Jonathan completely blindsided me. Tbh, I don’t think I’m over it even now.

WHookWeek: The F Word
Hello, and welcome to my TED Talk. I’m KW, and I’m the head mistress of the Killian Jones Bang Train. In honor of Wish Hook Week, I’ve been asked by absolutely no one to provide an in-depth look at our facilities and the special amenities and stations we’ve added to accommodate Old Hook, Wish Hook, and Detective Rogers.
First, allow me to say that we here at the KJ Bang Train have every sympathy for those who choose not to acknowledge the existence of Wish Hook (or his tengential other versions). We have a highly sophisticated protocol in place for such riders on the Bang Train, which we have tentatively titled, “Shut Up and Bang the Other One Then”.
However, for those of you who have adopted a “the more the merrier” or an “if it has Colin’s face, I’ll bang it” approach in your life, we have adapted and expanded all of our stations to allow for this exciting new addition to the KJ Bang Train. Please, come along with me for a veritable word wall virtual tour.
Current KJ Bang Train Stops
Aside from the last 30-40 years of their lives, Wish Hook and OG Hook both had the exact same experiences and relationships. As a result, nearly all stations service both Hooks concurrently - a fancy word that means at the same damn time. However, most stations do have special kiosks and exhibits relating to one Hook or the other. Let’s take a look...
Stop 1: The Liam Jones Lookout Whilst technically a station, this small stop is more of a pause in the Bang Train’s route. We have never witnessed anyone actually getting off at this stop, aside from those few souls who forgot they were riding the Bang Train and thought they’d take in some brotherly love. Generally, these riders return to the Train a little shaken, having seen a bit too much brotherly love for their tastes. Still, the stop is here if anyone ever shows up to man the place.
Stop 2: The Millian Mile This gorgeous, scenic stretch of stations is the second largest stop on the KJ Bang Train’s route. We have canon-compliant banging, canon-divergent banging, and AU banging... all of which service both Hooks equally. We also have an additional station devoted to OG Hook for all your Underworld banging needs. Bang away, you tragic star-crossed lovers T_T
Stop 3: Golden Hook Gateway Don’t be fooled by this stop’s golden appearance. All that glitters is not always consensual. Or maybe it is. But it’s probably not. This stop caters to both Hooks equally, though one’s likely to have a slightly more positive experience than the other. AU bangings, canon-compliant FoeTP bangings, canon-divergent bangings... We’ve got all the dirty, filthy bangings you could possibly want here. Just make sure to wipe your feet before boarding the train again. We don’t know where you’ve been, you dirty fiend friend.
Stop 4: Tinkerhook Terminal This fun, spritely stop is the first of several located in our lovely Neverland Neighborhood. This stop caters to both Hooks with plenty of jungle bangings literally everywhere and anywhere bangings can occur. There’s also a special “Reunion in Neverland” Kiosk that caters solely to OG Hook and S3 bangings, as well as a Storybrooke Kiosk for any of your post-S3 bangings with either Hook (or both, we never judge).
Stop 5: Captain Pan Camps As soon as the Bang Train pulls in at this popular stop, you’ll be asked by our porter if you prefer the Dark Camp or the Light Camp. You’ll want to make sure you choose wisely, my friends, as there is a BIG difference between the two! Both cater to all of your Captain Pan bangings, albeit in very different ways. Both also have an OG Hook specific “Reunion in Neverland” Kiosk, as well as a “Wish Pan” exhibit that promises untold future wonders for both Hooks... or nightmares, depending on which camp you chose ;)
Stop 6: The Lost Boys Layover Stops are rarely as raucous (or dangerous) as this one, which is why we do not allow drop-offs with later pick-ups here. We used to, but no one ever seemed to return, or they showed up late and on death’s door from Dreamshade poisoning. Instead, the Bang Train will remain in station, ready for evacuation, for the duration of your visit. Make sure to check out the “Felix Fracas” exhibit and the Mess Hall, which serves a lovely foie gras. (Please Note: All of our Lost Boys are physically over 18 and mentally deranged.)
Stop 7: Tiger Lily Territory The last of our Neverland stops is a beautiful paradise of nature. Specializing in blow darts, Lost Boy evasion, and bangings, this stop also boasts a lovely Post-Series Kiosk dedicated especially to Wish Hook. If Wish Hook isn’t to your liking, shut up and bang the other one instead.
Stop 8: Hooked Queen Haven The third largest stop on the Bang Train’s route, and the largest non-canon stop, this station has a small Pre-Curse Carriage Ride to greet you as soon as you leave the Bang Train. This rollicking ride is the only part of the Haven that services both Hooks equally. From there, the station diverges down two separate paths. The left hand path is for Wish Hook, comprised of Pirate Queen and HQ Endgame stations, while the right hand path is for OG Hook’s continued pre-curse and post-curse Hooked Queen shenanigans and various AU stops.
Stop 9: Captain of Hearts Cave This rocky dungeon-like stop caters almost exclusively to OG Hook, though there is a small kiosk for those who choose to believe there was some banging attempts before the two Hooks’ paths diverged. Make sure to check out the “History of Male Submission” exhibit, which runs year round for absolutely no reason at all, unless you know what I mean, then you know what I mean, and would surely agree with its inclusion here. For no reason. At all. Have a nice day :)
Stop 10: Captain Gothel Grove This dark, ominous stop is definitely one for seasoned bangers only. Be sure this is where you want to stop before you get off the train, because once you’re here... Well, you might be here for a longer time than you’d like. This stop is exclusively for Wish Hook, as OG Hook refused to touch this stop with a ten foot pole, much to Mother Gothel’s disappointment. Warning: Don’t eat the mushrooms. Or drink the tea. Or... Really, just watch your back, like, the whole time. Forever. This one is a genocidal maniac.
Stop 11: Hookriel Harbor This stop was originally much smaller and in a different place on the route, but it was upgraded and relocated as of Season 7. While the original station was devoted solely to OG Hook bangings, the new and improved station now focuses more so on Wish Hook and Wish Ariel’s relations. There still exists a kiosk for OG Hookriel, of course, along with all the original content from the first incarnation of this much-loved stop. Old Hook also gets some love here.
Stop 12: Sleeping Hook Spot This quaint little stop is centered on OG Hook’s AU/Divergent bangings with Princess Aurora. There is a small kiosk for potential Wish Hook post-series bangings, just in case you have need of it. This quiet refuge is just the place to calm your nerves before reaching the next stop...
Stop 13: Captain Swan Central Station The largest and busiest stop on the entire Bang Train line, this bustling hub boasts all the amenities one would expect from a 5-star establishment - a coffee shop, a gym, a pool where ill-fitting suits just happen to fall right off, plenty of hotel rooms with only one double bed, etc. There’s also special sub-stations for Lieutenant Duckling, Captain Swan Threesomes (just slap a name on the end of “Captain Swan” and there’s a station for it), Captain Swan 2.0, and just about every other variety of this endgame ship that your dirty little heart could possibly desire. Make sure to check out the special year-round exhibit entitled, “How Many Hooks Is Too Many Hooks?” Spoiler: The answer is none. There is no such thing as too many Hooks for Emma to bang at once.
Stop 14: Captain Charming Cove If you’re looking for a bromance, you’ll have to look elsewhere... for this is the bang train. We got nothing but bangings here, and these two DO bang at this stop. Choo Choo, All Aboard! We also have an MPreg Kiosk for all your mpreg needs. Nobody judges here. All Hooks welcome.
Stop 15: Krakillian Kreek A watery stop full of nothing but HUGS!!! (And tentacles. Please mind the tentacles and keep an eye on your orifices.)
Stop 16: Old Hooks Home This special stop caters to Old Hook, and Old Hook alone. Anyone and anything you might want to have Old Hook bang - it can happen here. Granny, Lady Tremaine, Old Emma, Young Emma, you name it. There’s also Taco Tuesdays and free bingo every night.
Stop 17: Hooking Utensil Utopia This Rogers-centric stop boasts the finest beignets in the world, as well as some top-notch detective work if you’re into that kind of thing. Oh, who are we kidding? You’re here to bang some Hooks... and the Hooking Utensil stop has the sweeeeeetest banging this side of the Pancake House. Wish Hook is also welcome, of course, both pre- and post- Hyperion Heights.
Stop 18: Hook Coven Crossing Still need more Hook? We’ve got you covered. Here at Hook Coven Crossing, your Hooks can bang other Hooks... and still more Hooks... whilst banging still more Hooks... and then a few more. All the Hooks are here, and they’re all waiting for you each other! :D
Stop 19: Last Chance Alley We here at the KJ Bang Train like to see to ALL of our riders’ needs... and that’s where Last Chance Alley comes in. All bangable ships that don’t have stops of their own can be indulged in here. We have kiosks for Red Hook, Black Hook, Wicked Hook, Hookfire, Stubble Sandwich, whatever we call Hades and Hook (why does that still not seem to have a name? maybe Blue Hook? No, that would be Blue + Hook...)... All the smaller ships are here, along with Captain Floor, Captain Bondage, some interactive “Make Your Own Threesome” exhibits and a self-contained Orgy Pile! Make sure to top off your ride on the Bang Train with this one-of-a-kind stop!
Stop 20: Right Back to the Start... The KJ Bang Train is life. The KJ Bang Train is love.

Merlin (1998)
- first and foremost: them <3 an icon, a gnome of the people, deserving of a raise and an oscar nomination. Frik (played by Martin Short) my beloved. (+1000 Mab fairies)
Tumblr media
- decent amount of christianity (-50 monks)
- goth gf queen mab (+1000 purple lipstick tubes)
- dragon? 3/10 what THE FUCK is this? why does it have like 8 wings?? i mean spits real fire so points for that but??? (+7 gaius eyebrows)
Tumblr media
- THE ONE SCENE WHERE MERLIN PICKS THE MOON OUT OF THE SKY AND ROLLS IT ON HIS FINGERS LIKE A COIN??? COOLEST SHIT IVE EVER SEEN (+500 moon coins)
- okay points for it following the actual legend but i did NOT NEED THE ‘INCEST SEX SHOWN THROUGH CANDLE WAX TO MERLIN’ SCENE (-100000000 bleach to my eyes)
- cast? Sam Neil as Merlin, Helena Botham Carter as Morgan, Martin Short as Frik, Sebastian Roché as Gawain, Lena Heady as Guinevere??? and much more?? absolute icons (+500 excaliburs)
- Morgan le Fay: 🥺 as soon as she appeared on screen i knew i would support her crimes. has a speech impediment, love for her sociopathic child, and an actual reason for her actions. also her romance with frik? the healthiest of the entire show (+2000 kites)
Tumblr media
- arthur: what can i say i’m a sucker. all he wants is peace and love and i just go 🫠 also apparently merlin taught him ethics and morals but there’s no way. i love him and his curly hair <3 (+7000 noble hearts)
Tumblr media
- GAWAIN my absolute beloved. truly a treasure (+2000 tankards of ale)
- lady of the lake has a cgi necklace of moving fish and that shit slaps so hard (+300 ominous boats on lakes)
Tumblr media
- the women on this show? guinevere in particular? absolutely slay. (+50000 gay heart flutters)
Tumblr media
- all of this happens bc of shitty parental figures (-400 therapy sessions)
- lancelot cheats on his wife without any enchantment :( (-500 broken hearts)
- merlin helps uther sleep with igraine using deception and without her consent (-2000 BBCM S5 flashbacks of morally dark grey merlin)
-mordred? sociopath. evil. soulless being and also a drama queen. had me, arthur, and gawain all going “STOP TALKING” throughout (-3000 hairs pulled out)
- guinevere nearly being burned at the stake but arthur can’t go through with it and then lancelot swoops in and they ride off into the sunset… whirlwind of emotions lads (+100 for the happy ending -100 for stress palpitations)
- merlin: love love love sam neill but my god this merlin makes me pull my hair out. i mean yay for merlin/nimueh endgame i guess but I DONT UNDERSTAND HIS MORALITY OR MOTIVATIONS (-100 old merlin beards)
Tumblr media
- the “it was all a story being told by the unreliable narrator” ending? merlin telling the story for money and not using magic? not a fan! loved that frik was there but hey? what the hell did merlin ‘omit’?? (-500 unsatisfactory feelings)
- rupert the talking horse. sorry SIR rupert. no backstory. no explanation. a handful of scenes where he talks. the only one left with any magic at the end of the show. a true enigma (+1300 pieces of hay)
Conclusions:
i think i might be stupid. but like i have no idea what defines good and evil in this show. all mab wants is for magic to remain in the world but nay sayeth the christians so now there’s conflict. but like??? merlin buddy you are born of magic? and you want it gone? the fuck? simply do not understand.
also did Not like mab enchanting uther to lust after igraine and gwen after lancelot. did NOT LIKE FRIK CONVINCING MORGAN TO HAVE SEX WITH ARTHUR. bad bad bad behavior all around.
there were some badass scenes i’m not gonna lie, mab shooting arrows out of her fingers? incredible. that one king being like 😐 while his tower crumbles behind him? I LAUGHED SO HARD DUDE! there was also some banger cgi. however as this show made me watch parts of an incest sex scene in candle wax that is now seared into my brain, a lot of points were lost.
RESULTS: -99940943 points
or 61757 excluding That Scene
i have decided to watch every arthurian legend show/movie to rank them all wish me luck on this quest

im gonna do old school songs for the song ask if you dont mind.
i was made for loving you by kiss
cant fight this feeling by reo speenwagon
cruise by smokey robinson
cruel summer by bananarama
everybody wants to rule the world by tears for fears
greatest love of all whiteney houston
rhythm of the night by debarge
of course, i don't mind!!! equal opportunity listener here ghlasdkjf
i was made for loving you- i didn't recognize it from name alone (i had the tory kelley song by the same name on the brain), but as soon as it started i realized i already know this song?? but the thing is- i have absolutely no clue how or why i know it because it's not THAT familiar to me beyond the chorus??? is it a tiktok thing? a commercial? all i know is i'm very confused, but also having a great time because the chorus hook in this song is SO unbelievably good
can't fight this feeling anymore- incredible power ballad, but nowhere near the PERFECTION that is keep on loving you tbh!! unfortunately, this is one of many songs that glee absolutely ruined for me, and now i can't listen to it without thinking about mr shue creeping on finn in the shower 😭
cruise- the way this song holds up is just!!! so fucking smooth, so fucking sexy, so fucking sensual. nobody's doing it like he was doing it yk. over 5 minutes long and tbh i wouldn't mind if it was 5 MORE minutes, just cause the world it creates is so rich and lush and gorgeous
cruel summer- god, i just fucking love the 80s. the synths, the crunchy bass lines, the guitar licks. and specifically to this song, i LOVE the way they made the song feel so summery with those guitar licks and bass lines, yet at the same time, kind of dark and ominous to fit with the theme of the song
everybody wants to rule the world- as has been discussed, i absolutely love a song that sounds happy but is actually depressing as fuck, and this obviously fits that to a t. i don't really know what more to say about such an iconic song tbh!! iconic melodies, iconic lyrics, and all for good reason!!
greatest love of all- tbh wouldn't say it's anywhere close to her best song—in fact, i'd say it's kinda cheesy and boring rip—but her voice alone is just. unparalleled. she makes even the worst song sound great yk??
rhythm of the night- [flashback to anytime crystal methyd and her mullet were on screen during rpdr s12 😭] anyways, BANGER. i do have to say that no matter how many times i listen to it tho, i always confuse the voices in the first few seconds of the second verse as actual people talking, then i remember it's part of the song 😭
anonymously send me a song to listen to
