A:tLA Olympics AU – Sokka
Not really Olympics so he'll have a reason to feel inferior, but in fact he's the one who inspired me for this AU. I will never stop admiring how smart he is.
FIDE is a part of International Olympic Committee, but they have their own Chess Olympiad.

"The Queen's Gambit" will forever be my chess inspiration.
Id in ALT.
This is the last one in my "atla olympics au" series (check the corresponding tag for other characters). There also are Olympics headcanons by other tumblr users (here and here), as well as a fanart

Shoutout to my favourite aussie player Bobby Cheng, who finished with an amazing 7/9 in this year's Chess Olympiad. We did decently this year with 45th in the open and 36th in the women's, considering there were 197 teams and Australia isn't particularly known for chess prowess. We're more swimmers and cricketers.
But this year, Bobby Cheng was a stand out player who defeated both English GM David Howell and Ukrainian GM Vasyl Ivanchuk:
In round 3, Cheng played as black against Ivanchuk, who in his heyday was a top 10-20 player and is still an astounding player. They had a drawn position until move 39 where Ivanchuk took what he believed to be a free pawn on c6:

But once Cheng's knight moves to d4, he forks white's bishop and queen. The queen can't move to defend the bishop without being taken and so the bishop is lost. Ivanchuk resigned after the bishop was taken.
In round 5, Cheng played as white against David Howell. The play was even until Howell missed an opportunity to make a check and Cheng took him in the endgame. The game ended soon after an interesting position here:

With white to move, Cheng couldn't take Howell's rook and promote to a queen as that would have left Howell without any moves, resulting in a stalemate. Cheng instead promoted to a knight, giving the black king a check, which allowed the black king to move out of the way of the last white pawn. With a second promotion soon to follow, Howell resigned.
So two excellent wins for Cheng against two very strong grandmasters. Cheng's final score was:

Which adds up to an incredible 7/9 with only one loss in the first round. Ukraine ended up coming 15th in the open and England 20th, so it was a great showing.
(Also a big shoutout to India for sweeping both the open and the womens! Looking forward to seeing Gukesh Dormmaraju play in the World Championship in a few months time.)

Note: Not counting raffles/sweepstakes/lotteries. If you got top 3 in a competition and personally consider that a form of winning, that counts as winning.
