So we all shag-assed over to the Western world as soon as the opportunity presented itself. We shag-assed over here, and having seen what the life is like, many if not all would shag-ass right back, but it's impossible. The Soviet government is not nice.

Fucking smart Americans, they advise men like Alyoshka and me to change professions. Where am I to hide all my thoughts, feelings, ten years of living, books of poetry? And me myself, where am I to hide refined little Eddie? Lock him up in the shell of a busboy. Bullshit. I tried it. I can no longer be an ordinary man. I am spoiled forever. Only the grave will reform me.

Eventually American security forces are going to have trouble with us. After all, not everyone conforms. In a couple of years look for Russians among the terrorists in liberation fronts of every description. That is my forecast.

Change our professions! Can the soul be changed? Knowing definitely what he is capable of, is it everyone who can suppress himself here and live the life of an ordinary man, laying no claim to anything, when he sees around him money, success, and fame, all of it largely undeserved, when he knows from experience both here and in the Soviet Union—and in this case the experience is identical—that he who is obedient and patient receives all from society, that he who sits on his butt all day and curries favor gets it all.

Starting with the image you picked, I'm getting a strong message of using music and art in general as a form of escapism but also a mean of harmless self expression. They're just really selfless. The reason behind that is because this person comes from a rather "poor" background. This generosity can also be shown in their emotions and how they express themselves. They do not shy away from telling people they love them. Speaking of cultural differences, at the beginning of your reading, I had the impression that they lived in a different country than yours and that feeling is further confirmed with the spread. They could possibly have a similar background to yours but the only difference is that they grew up in a different setting. Like for instance, imagine two people that are both of European descent but one of them grew up in Spain while the other spent on the other side of the globe for some reason. Another thing I was picking up on was two people being born from two different ethnicities. So I feel like you and your future spouse will have a lot in common in the sense that you may have been through similar hardships in your life though you come from completely different areas of the globe. And so, without knowing it, he became conditioned, becoming addicted to your smile, to the way you laugh when he says something stupid, to your entire personality. To you.

and that led him to try harder and harder, without realizing everything he was leaving behind.

he began to give up parties, going from saturdays blasting loud music at home to saturdays talking for hours with you in the bookstore, leaning on the counter or helping you organize books.

and he began to gain your trust, you can't deny it. Because you knew what his intentions used to be, but you could also see how committed he was to just getting to know you, to learning more about who you are behind the physical attraction he felt.

still, he still didn't know about Kat, and you didn't know how to bring it up after a while, so you tried to make it natural, letting him see some pictures, awkwardly mentioning her in anecdotes, until he dared to ask.

and of course, he wanted to meet her afterward, but you weren't going to allow it. Not so easily.

you didn't want to get your hopes up, for your sweet little girl to get used to and attached to someone who might still only want you physically, who could vanish at any moment.

you didn't want to hurt her, even though she was still a baby and didn't understand many things.

so Jack was patient, taking the time to earn your trust, managing to take you on one date, and another, and another, until you fell completely for him, opening not only your heart to him, but also a direct pass into your little girl's life.

and when Jack met her? oh, it was as if a thousand things made sense for the first time. There, with his hand on your waist, watching you rock her, he felt at home. It felt right. And he knew that's where he always wanted to be, even if it meant leaving a part of his youth, the immaturity and freedom he used to have.

he couldn't help but bond with you both when that little girl, barely opening her eyes, took his finger in her tiny hand, squeezing it with her little strength, while the world felt so giant around her.

Jack then knew he had to protect her.

so he got involved.

he spent the next few years of his life being a father figure to Kat, even though her biological dad was still out there, on the streets of Newark, pretending he didn't have a daughter, a past.

and he grew attached. Oh, how he grew attached.

he watched her leave your breast, start to grow her first teeth, say her first words, take her first steps, have her first pigtails, become more aware of her own existence, and he couldn't be more proud, happy.

his world feels more complete, and people call him dad of the year every time they see him wave to the little girl in the glass near the ice.

god, she even has different jerseys with his number, with the word "daddy" on the back.

and Jack feels like he knows everything, that he's prepared for everything life can throw at him when it comes to her, because he knows the right path will always be the one that protects her and makes her happy.

but what he's not ready for… is when he's no longer enough. When his job starts interrupting quality time now that Kat is 4, almost 5, and she's constantly talking, and trying to include him in her life.

Jack feels like he's not seeing her live her childhood with every day he's away, and his heart breaks and melts every time he calls you and you show him the drawings the little girl is making because she misses him.

just imagine when she told him. When she stood in front of him, unsteady, with her sticky little fingers and her big, bright eyes, and asked him if he was leaving you, not understanding the weight of her question, and not understanding why the young man's eyes were turning a little glassy.

and he knows she doesn't do it on purpose, but it hurts, it hurts so much to know that the distance between him and his little girl is growing ever wider. So he asks you for help, for advice. He asks you about her all the time and tries to be there. But nothing ever feels enough.

and everything gets worse when Kat's birthday starts to approach, and he doesn't know if he'll be able to make it in time, to be there to wake her up like every year and with you give her the best of days, where the little girl only knows how to smile until her cheeks hurt, until her eyes close on their own, and she's exhausted all her energy being free and playing.

what's he supposed to do? how can he be in two places at once? it feels impossible, so the two of you try to find a solution. You spend hours and hours talking, trying to come up with a plan, until finally, an idea begins to take shape.

but he can't do it alone.

so, Kat and you travel to Michigan to see his family while he asks some of his friends to buy certain materials and tools, and come to his house to start part of the job while he arrives.

god, Jack hasn't bothered hammering, painting, moving furniture, or even thinking about decorating for a long time. But for her, just to see her happy, he's willing to do anything. So when he finally touches the floor of his house, he's unstoppable.

and those are tough days, when he empties the little girl's room and, together with his friends, takes on the task of painting it once more, trying to bring out artistic talents they didn't really have; using contacts, and any kind of help to make the place feel like those princess stories he knows she loves.

because Jack paid attention to every conversation, to every babble the little girl uttered while watching barbie and the 12 dancing princesses for the first time, or when she watched tangled, the princess and the frog, and all those movies. He paid attention to how her eyes filled with sparkle and excitement when the princesses learned that by dancing on the flowers painted on the floor they could reach that magical place. He paid attention to the times she tried to imitate them, trying to spin, and falling unsteadily in each attempt.

Jack knows that Kat loves to dance, that she loves the princesses, the stories, the illusion. And he knows that her previous decor looked like it belonged on a much younger baby, and that he needed to update it to something that matched her current tastes, so… why not?

he'd do anything to see her happy, even if it meant calling his sweaty, idiot friends to build a fairytale room, having to bribe them with alcohol, with fun after the help.

he'd do it a thousand times just for her. To remind her he wasn't going anywhere. Because calling her for her birthday wasn't enough.

he'd do it a thousand times because it's all worth it when she walks into the room and gasps, staring with wide eyes at absolutely everything, from the drawings on the ceiling, to the tangled lamps, and the flowers, and the huge draw of peter pan on one of the walls.

it's all worth it when she sees the huge drawing on the floor in front of her bed. That circle with the 12 flowers.

everyone watched in silence as she took small steps, trying not to trip on her white dress (like a princess), until she reached the drawing and tried to spin over one of the flowers, this time without falling, surprising everyone, including herself.

"dad, i did it!" she said, in that little and sweet voice, as she ran into Jack's arms. He laughed and picked her up, placing a sweet kiss on her cheek, feeling a warmth in his chest knowing he was making her happy.

and yes, he knows that a material gift isn't proof of his love, but he also knows that she'll think of him every time she enters her room, and as she grows up, this will be one of her reminders that he listens to everything she says, that he pays attention and tries to make her happy, even when they're not in the same place.

and he knows that a material gift often doesn't mean much to people, but you have no doubt what this meant to her, because you can see it in her face, in how happy she is, in how she looks at Jack as if he'd given her the entire universe.

you know that even though everything was fragile for a moment, this detail helped them, reminding her that Jack would always be there for her. Because he chose them, because by falling in love with you, he joined a different life, and he welcomed her with open arms, even when he didn't know what was coming.

because Jack loved to have fun and live the crazy life, but nothing will compare to how much he loves coming home and melting into your arms as he feels his daughter cuddle in his, welcoming him home, letting him know she's his biggest fan, and that he'll always have someone that will make his days fun and dynamic no matter what.

Having your own house is a beautiful experience. It’s like an adventure of having your own kingdom and being a monarch. You have all the privacy and personal space one can dream of; you have peace and quiet; you have freedom to do whatever you want be it walking around butt naked or cooking up a three course meal at  3am; you can have random 3 am dance concerts and so on and so on. Most importantly you could do whatever you wanted to decorate and style it which is what you were busy doing right now.

Lately your Pinterest feed was full of various versions of colorful archways. People came up with so many interesting ways to add a pop of color to their house and it seemed quite easy to do so. So here you were perched on the stool unleashing your inner artist on your archway. Well at least that was the plan. Everything went to gutter when you saw a movement in the corner of your eye. You turned around made eye contact with probably the most disgusting and vile looking grasshopper ever. The horrific appearance of the beast made you scream so hard the beast also got startled and fucking jumped on you! Obviously you lost your shit at that too, your already shaky and unstable stool just couldn’t take it anymore. One second you were screaming your lungs out the next second you were on the floor with your leg hurting like a bitch.

You must have made quite a lot of noise because almost immediately the front door of your house basically burst open and Seungmin rushed towards your hunching figure. You had almost forgotten he was supposed to come over. You had even left your door open for him. Quite convenient, because no way in hell would you be able to stand up and walk towards the door in this state. You sure as hell hoped you didn’t break it.

“Are you okay? What happened?” Seungmin looked frantic as he nervously examined you. You wanted to keep your cool, you really did. But the pain and the shock took over your senses and the next thing you knew you were bawling your eyes out as Seungmin, confused and unsure of what to do, cradled your body close to his frame and tried to calm you down.

You were unsure of what happened next. You were pretty out of it. Maybe out of shock maybe because of the painkillers, who knows. Seungmin did most of… Well basically everything. He helped you get ready, took you to the hospital, did basically all the talking with the doctors, stayed with you through every procedure… He even took care of all the paperwork, bought all the meds and not once did he complain about anything! Even more, he bought you to his house! Well he said because you couldn’t be trusted to be alone but you knew it was because he was worried, also you did complain quite a lot about being afraid of the beast lurking in your house. With your foot strained like this there wasn’t even a possibility for you to run away from the hideous creature.

If you thought that he wasn’t husband material before (oh no you were totally not crushing on your best friend, not at all!), he even made you dinner, which was just finger licking good! He made sure to step away to his room to make a call, but you could still hear how he asked Minho for tips. How could you not love him? He even called Minho! He hated asking him for help. He looked so good doing everything too, all you could think about was how you wanted to kiss him.

“You’re the best Minnie.” You cheered as he helped you get to bed. He insisted that you take his bed, refusing to hear you protest. You loved how he always acted like everything was such a bother and then went out of his way to do it.

“Shut it, I’m only letting you sleep on my bed because knowing your clumsy ass you’ll fall of the sofa and further injure yourself!” He grumbled as he tucked you in like you were a literal child.

“Aww you do care about me.” You couldn’t help but tease.

Seungmin only scoffed – “Don’t push it!”

“I love you too!”- You mused, he rolled hie eyes at that but you could have sworn the corner of his lips lifted up. He was about to leave but you reached in just in time to grab his hand. Seungmin looked taken aback for a second but quickly gathered himself. “Please stay?” You made sure to do your best puppy eyes and it worked! Seungmin immediately caved, but being a stubborn ass, he is he just plopped on you. Careful to not touch your leg but still with enough force to squish you.

Honestly, jokes on him because you only saw this as an opportunity to wrap your hands around him and tightly hug him. He “tried” to get free but you knew that this softie enjoyed the hug, the big ass smile on his face confirmed it. In mere sounds he stopped resisting and continued to just flop on you.

“What are you doing?” He huffed out while his face was adorned with the prettiest smile ever. God you couldn’t understand how could he say anything bad about his smile or even think of hiding it. It was always so innocent and pure. It never failed to put a smile on your face, to light up your whole world.

“Showing how thankful I am?!” – To further prove your point you leaned in and gave him the fastest smooch on his cheek. Seungmin made sure to grimace as dramatically as possible, but as always, his arms wrapping around your waist told whole another story about how he felt.

“Oh really? By kissing my cheek?” What a little shit. Now it was your time to roll your eyes. “Are you insinuating I should kiss you elsewhere?” You tried to not sound as hopeful as you actually felt.

Seungmin barked out a teasing laugh-“As if you could, you don’t have the guts for it!”

You quickly let go of him and crossed your arms to show your disdain, with equally matching scowl adorning your face. That didn’t stop him from hugging your frame, in fact he tightened his hold around your waist. “How dare you sir!”

Seungmin looked at you with challenging look, his eyes full of amusement. “What? Are you going to kiss me then?” His voice was teasing, you couldn’t tell if he was actually for real or not. You couldn’t’ tell if you should challenge him or not.

“I just might!” – You challenged, thinking that you just might as well go with it. You could always play as if you were joking. You hated hiding your true feelings but anything was better than possibly losing him as a friend.

“What are you waiting for then?”? You thought you knew him the best but you couldn’t really decipher what his face meant. Was he actually for real? Were you two about to cross the line that could possibly ruin your friendship either for the best or for the worst?

“Don’t you dare regret it!” You whispered against his lips. When did Seungmin’s face get so close? With every breath your lips slightly brushed against each other. You could smell the minty smell of his toothpaste. God you were really about to do it!

“Wouldn’t dream of it love.” His voice was low, almost like a whisper. God, you couldn’t resist him anymore. Here went nothing. Bringing him closer with his face you finally connected your lips together.

His lips were a bit cold and chapped but nonetheless you loved how they felt against yours. Your whole heart was bursting with joy. Every drag of your lips against each other felt like heaven, you couldn’t help but lean in for more. Seungmin must have also felt that way because he also kissed you like a starved man, like you were oxygen he needed to breathe. His hands had shifted from around your waist, one hand held your hip tightly while the other migrated to your neck and softly rested there. You also couldn’t keep your hands to yourself, your one arm was wrapped around his shoulders as the other still held his cheek to have him as close as possible. His lips were almost addictive like a drug you didn’t know needed in your life you just couldn’t get enough.

Unfortunately for you, you had to lean back to get some air. You always thought that oxygen was overrated anyway but biology or whatever. Seungmin also seemed unimpressed to be away from your lips but that still didn’t stop him from covering your whole face and neck with sweet kisses.

“I thought I was the one supposed to be the one saying thanks?” You couldn’t help but giggle as he kissed the ticklish spot on your neck. Seungmin looked up to you for a second then quickly got up. Your heart clenched at the idea that you might’ve done something wrong but he immediately washed away those worries by walking around the bed and laying down on the bed next to you, under the same queen size cover.

You looked at him with wide eyes as he got more comfortable laying on his back and opened his arms for you almost like an invitation. “All done!”

“What are you doing Min?” A smile crept up your face as you examined his mischievous smile.

“I just got more comfortable, you can thank me as much as you want now.” Seungmin answered proudly with the prettiest smirk adorning his face.

 You couldn’t help but mirror the expression. “You’re such a brat sometimes. What should I do with you?”

As if seriously thinking things over Seungmin furrowed his eyebrows and to be extra dramatic crossed his arms. You loved how giddy he felt after your kiss. It felt nice knowing you weren’t the only one losing your shit on the inside.

Seungmin smiled, and you knew immediately he was about to smartass you. You tried to turn away from him to not give him the satisfaction but he was quicker. He wrapped his arms around you and brought you closer to his body, his forehead gently resting on yours. “You love me!” After rolling your eyes at his goofyness you sighed in defeat and relaxed into the hug.

“You know what? I do.” You leaned in and sealed your lips again to further confirm your feelings. You would have hurt your leg a long time ago if you knew it things would end up like this.

John will never admit to it, will take this secret to his fucking GRAVE, but he absolutely loves Bridgerton. he sat in on Ava watching an episode and said things like “this is so stupid” “what is this shit” but then immediately went to his room afterwards and binged the entire series.

has posters of his favorite bands/artists plastered all over his bedroom walls like a damn teenager.

keeps a (rather large) poster of “the new avengers” on the wall in front of his bed so he can see it before he goes to bed at night and when he wakes up in the morning to start his day.

likes to paint yelena’s nails for her because it’s very calming and grounding for him.

“I mean— I- I can paint them! You know, uhm, like if that’s okay with you? Not in a weird way I- I just—”

“Sure Bob, you can paint my nails for me.” :)

ice cream addict. LOVES ben & jerry’s. it got to the point where he was buying so much ice cream “for the team” that it was taking up all the space in the kitchen freezer. so, he bought a mini fridge for his room and he keeps them there for himself.

INSISTS that, at least once a week, the team has a “game night” with all sorts of board games, charades, etc… the team will grunt groan and protest everytime he asks, but ultimately they all end up having fun (and arguing like crazy)

watches love island. he 1000% watches love island.

snores SO FUCKING LOUD— like the team is begging Val to reconstruct his bedroom to make it soundproof. you can hear him snoring from down the hall.

never makes it through a single movie. falls asleep every. single. time. very dad of him.
