Mick somehow convinced his older grandson to come to the public pool with Hannah and him. The only reason Jacob gave in was probably to stop his family from constantly bugging him with how he should leave the house more, how he can’t just sit in his room all the time, how he needs to meet up with some people of his age and so on and so on.

Just that there were no other teens at the pool, and Jacob was actually relieved about it. The last thing he wanted his classmates to see was him hanging around with his hippie grandpa and his crazy little sister in his free time.

Still at first Jacob didn’t want to actually go swimming, so there just was some awkard silence, before Mick decided to seize the opportunity to give Jacob some life lessons (which were mostly about how he should take things easy and not worry that much about everything and especially not about his dad’s rants). Jacob loves his grandpa, and feels way more at ease with him than with his dad, and actually feels quite grateful for his support, but still the whole situation was rather embarrassing.

After this conversation, they finally decided to join Hannah in the pool, but while she and Mick were enjoying themselves and had fun chatting with some other visitors, Jacob felt increasingly uncomfortable. He headed to the bathrooms and cried under the shower, and wasn’t able to fully figure out why. He didn’t want Mick and Hannah to notice he wasn’t doing well, so he sneaked over to the desolate basketball court and did some throws, just to distract himself.

But then something unexpected happened.

Donnie has a problem with slouching, so it's mostly because of that.

But also because I may or may not have accidentally drawn him too low on the page

He's also now younger than Leo by a couple decades, so two much larger brothers made him look a lot smaller than I intended XD

The timeline stuff is a bit to explain.

So allow me to explain!

Leonardo's timeline was veryyy similar to that of the first five minutes of the movie. The Kraang invaded, the Resistance was formed.

And the Resistance failed.

One by one, the Hamato clan and friends fell. Raph died protecting refugees fleeing a Kraang prison camp. Soon after, Splinter succumbed to old age. Cassandra hung herself after being captured by the Kraang so they wouldn't be able to get important intel. A few years later, Donnie was killed in a freak lab explosion, and Mikey just. . . disappeared.

When the Kraang finally found the Resistance base, Leonardo was injured in battle, and April sacrificed herself to buy Casey Jr. enough time to get him and Leo to safety. Now, it was just the two of them struggling to survive.

Then the Kraang decided to leave Earth, assuming they had successfully concurred humanity.

So Casey and Leo set out to take down the Technodrome, determined in keeping the Kraang trapped on Earth to protect the rest of the galaxy or die trying.

And miraculously, they succeeded. But Casey died during the mission.

Alone for years on a planet now practically equivalent to the prison dimension, Leonardo only kept trying to survive because Casey Jr. made him promise to before the Kraang ended his life.

When the other Michelangelo found him, Leo was close to breaking that promise. Fortunately, he had held on for a little bit longer.

Raphael's timeline is almost the exact same as the events of the movie.

He was captured by the Kraang, infected and kraang-ified. His brothers came to rescue him and stop the Kraang.

But Leo wasn't able to get through to his big brother.

Something important to note is that Raph never stopped fighting for control. He was so determined to break free, because his brothers needed him. It was annoying for the Kraang, really. It's easiest to control broken spirits, and Raph wasn't about to break any time soon.

So the Kraang forced him to do the one thing that would shatter his resolve. They made him kill his own brothers, rip them limb from limb with his own bare hands.

It's an image likely to haunt him for the rest of his life, and is only one of the things the Kraang made him do.

Raph was under their control for years, both prisoner and soldier. He was quick to become the Kraang's favorite play thing, seemingly enjoying the torment they put him through; physically, mentally, emotionally, psychologically.

Over time, the Kraang infection within became a permanent part of him. Then Michelangelo rescued him, using his mystic powers to free Raph's mind, and brought him to his new home.

Now unlike the other two, Donatello never got the chance to meet the Kraang.

Mostly because he and his brothers never took down the Shredder.

They were going to of course. They went to rescue their dad, they had their Hamato ninpo. But things went terribly wrong.

Cassandra tried to free Splinter, just like in the show. But the Shredder ended her before she had the chance. With so much power coursing through him, there was nothing the turtles could do. Draxum was down next.

Without any backup, it was four against one, and the turtles weren't fairing too well. And in this timeline, they had never met April. The brothers did their best, but Shredder was just too strong.

During the battle, Mikey was critically injured. Raph and Leo gave one look at each other, and together held off the Shredder just long enough for Leo to portal Donnie and Mikey away to safety.

Donatello couldn't do anything as Mikey died in his arms.

Over the next year, Earth became a mafia state, with the Foot at the very top. Donnie did his best to keep a low profile, turning to a life of crime to scrape by. He's been betrayed by would-be friends, stabbed in the back more times than he can count.

He's learned that the best way to stay safe is to not get attached. Anyone who tries to be your friend is bound to hurt you.

Then, he was proven right.

Often times, gangs would hire him for his tech. On one such instance, the Purple Dragons managed to convince him to team up with them on a high pay heist. Donnie knew it was a bad idea from the start, but against his better judgement, went along with it.

The Purple Dragons obviously betrayed him, stealing all of his tech and research. And Kendra being. . . well, Kendra, she decided to take it a step further, to kill Donnie right there.

That's when the other Michelangelo arrived, rescuing Donatello.

To put it simply, these three have been through hell. They have a lot of issues, and a lot of stuff to work through.

Rise Characterizations

Last month I did an in-depth re-watch of rottmnt s1 to take some notes on writing the characters of rise from their perspective and such. Figured I'd share what I found, but I'm also posting this bc my docs have a nasty habit of blipping out of existence.

We'll start with Raph bc he's the oldest of course, but I'll post the others sep. bc this is gonna get long!!

Raph Character Notes

Language Habits:

Catchphrases: "like a boss", "smash"

Verbalizes his attacks such as "smash", "knuckle sandwich", "power smash jitsu", "tonfa power jitsu", "mystic punch jitsu"

Uses older song titles for surprised exclamations or in place of cursing, most notably "jumping jack flash!"

Uses aave/bae, For example: 'em instead of them, 'ey instead of they, 'cause instead of because, forgoes the g in ing words (going becomes goin')

Uses less and less grammar the more he's stressed, and his voice will come to a higher pitch

Will speak in a softer tone to his little brothers if he's concerned about hurting their feelings. Aka babying them

Mixes up both metaphors and idioms. Would be one to say how the turn tables unironically

Does say "hero" a lot, lost count, especially in phrases like "hero town"

Refers to his brothers as "boys" or "fellas"

Protective of his family

Center of responsibility for his brothers, but also has a reckless sense of fun. As long as it's him doing the stupid unsafe thing it's fine

Carries the weight, in a literal sense he piggy backs his brothers, but will also use his body as a shield from danger. Unfortunately this also means he takes his brothers a little less seriously (Mikey the most common victim), and will try and either protect them from everything or as an oldest sibling everything has go "his way"

Doesn't do well in solitude. Needs to be looking after people to feel functional, and needs to be around people to feel safe

Clumsy, "takes horrible pictures", isn't very good at hiding, he's a big guy so it probably took a lot of time to find balance

A sweet guy who still won't shy from making fun of his family. Leo tends to be the brunt of his teasing since he is the most annoying, but he will also poke Donnie on his dramatics

Likes cute things!!! Has a teddy bear collection and loves animals. It's so cool how this isn't played off as a joke and he's still just as masculine for liking pink and cutesy stuff

Likes fighting!!! Gets a lot of energy out defeating bad guys (where he directs his anger towards), the one who is shown to train the most, and also weight lifts in his spare time

Doesn't do well under pressure, here the anger comes out the most. He gets stressed when it's all on him, especially since he tends to mess up the most in these moments

Miscellaneous:

Hey Deux! I work in a golf course here in Chicago, and I might have some info that will probably interest your followers… Last Sunday I was at work when a very famous british popstar (who had just played two shows in town and had already visited us multiple times before) showed up with a female guest. They were both very low-key and clearly not wanting to draw any attention to them, but it was very difficult when you’re someone who looks like HIM, lol. Anyway, the popstar and the youtuber spent most of their afternoon there, just the two of them. She clearly isn’t a golfer, but he was more than happy to teach her all about the sport and just have fun for the sake of it. Not a lot happened, and as far as I could see, they never held hands, nor kissed or got touchy with each other, but they were chatting and laughing a lot, all the time. So even though I can’t tell you for sure if they were on a date or not, I feel pretty confident to say that they’re clearly way comfortable with each other’s company. They seem like two people who know each other very well by now, so even if they’re not a couple, they’re definitely near the besties-zone!

Hey Deux, Chicago-golf-course-girl here!  Following up on my previous email, I didn’t say anything at first because tbh it wasn’t my first time seeing him, and also bc I’m used to seeing celebrities at the golf course. Besides, I didn’t know who she was so I didn’t think too much of it… But then somehow the algorithm brought her latest post to my attention earlier today, and that’s when I saw the name and connected the dots. Eat, Play, Learn! Family Fun for Everyone!

Fixed an issue where the interaction cancels out if a toddler doesn't like the food. Thanks to @zemyna for catching!

Added the non-English stbls. Sorry, I swear I'm not one of those Anglophones that thinks English is the only language (I actually speak 3!), it's just a small step in the upload process that's easy to forget.

This is the final part of my little Kids and Toddlers mod series. It's meant to complement the Coloring Book and the Toddler foods mods so you will need those for this.

When I started this, I didn't think through how many new animations or custom details it would entail and I as continued, I kept having to add more and more. There are like 60 animations and 40 image assets 😭 hence why the two main files are so large for a mod.

What I've done is added more activities to the Activity Table after years of being annoyed that the Activity Table we have in TS3, despite being the EXACT SAME table from TS2, does not in fact allow your Sims to draw on it. EA, so lazy!

Anyway, what this does is add 4 new interactions to the Activity Table: Coloring, Arts & Crafts, Puzzles and the ability to serve toddlers food so they can eat there.

The activities are for toddlers and kids only but Teens+ can join in the puzzles if it's already been started by a toddler or child.

Note this will work with any of the Activity Tables in the game or Store but the puzzle will look weird as it's placed in the same spot as where the blocks are. You can use it with custom/cc activity tables provided only the mesh has been edited (for example, if slots are changed or removed, it may not work).

Credits/Thanks: The glue bottle, crayon, CAS paint items and one of the arts and crafts image assets are from @aroundthesims. Thanks as always to Sandy for her generosity and creativity in making Sims content! I originally only wanted to add the option to color/draw but this set of hers inspired me to add in more features. (hmm, maybe I shouldn't be thanking you then considering what a pain that was 🤔😅) All other objects and images are from TS4. Custom animations are by me using TS4 and TS3 as bases.

Coloring: Toddlers and Kids can color if there is a crayon box on the lot. Just like using a coloring book, coloring a picture will take up one crayon. Coloring increases painting skill for both. When completed, the final project will be in their inventory.

Arts & Crafts: Toddlers and Kids can do an arts and craft project. Not additional object is needed. They go pretty crazy with the glitter and glue so it can be dirty stuff if they don't have the neat trait. This activity decreases their hygiene and they will get covered in glitter paint when done. Similar to coloring, when completed, the final project will go in their inventory and they get painting skill while playing.

Puzzles: You need to buy a puzzle box and have it on your lot to do puzzles. There are two puzzle boxes but they do the same thing. And they stack! (I love stackable things) There are 3 puzzle types: Easy, medium and Hard. Toddlers can only do Easy puzzles. Children can do either easy, medium or Hard puzzles depending on their Logic skill (for Hard, logic needs to be 3 or higher). The puzzle difficulty will also determine how long it takes to complete the puzzle. Teens+ can help with puzzles but they can't start a puzzle on their own. Toddlers can kids can start a puzzle on their own or help another Sim with a puzzle. Puzzles increase Logic skill for all those playing it but will increase faster for whoever starts the puzzle. If a puzzle is completed, everyone who helped put it together will get bonus skill points. If there is already a puzzle on the table, there is no option to start another, you can only help with the current puzzle. There are different puzzle images (15 in total) but there's no difference between them. The only thing that matters is puzzle difficulty. If the Sim who started the puzzle stops for whatever reason (you or the game cancels the interaction), everyone else helping will stop as well.

Eating: Children+ can serve toddlers meals or snacks. It works the same as my Toddler Foods and Snacks mod. They will place the tray/bowl on the activity table and then call the toddler to eat. If the toddler is hungry, they will go over and start eating. Otherwise, they can always eat it later.

Known Issues:

Animations aren't perfect (but what in life is?) so there's some clipping, especially on the toddlers when they kneel.

The comically large puzzle piece accessory jumps around a little and sits kind of weird in the toddler's hand. I suspect this is because the game is using the adult version of the object animation. I've noted it for fixing whenever I do a second pass on the mod.

The food tray is upside down. Setting object rotation in-game messes up the routing for the table so I'm leaving it as is as it doesn't really bother me.

If there is a food tray or bowl on the table, you shouldn't be able to do anything else there because that slot/part is being used but I had this happen once where my tester child started coloring there. It didn't happen again but if it does happen in your game, simply cancel out the interaction and route them to another part of the table.

The puzzle leaves a shadow even when it's pile form because the shadow mesh is there but you only see it until the geostate changes.

This is not an issue but the alternate material states for objects are only available in high so if you play with graphic settings for objects on medium or low, you're going to see the default image for the puzzles or pictures.

Breaking the cycle with the camping trip, suggested by Eddie Munson of all people, has been the highlight of the summer for Jeff. If you ask anyone in that group, they would also agree. They are the ones to come up with the idea that all six of you guys should meet at the roller rink.

The Rink-A-Rama opened a couple years ago. Certain crowds tend to flock there. Either young couples with their children trying to burn off their energy, or the evening crowd when all of the burnouts and socialites came to play. It’s fortunate that tonight you haven’t run into anyone from school, aside from the group you came with.

The lighting inside turns a moody indigo, and a switch flickers on in the D.J. booth. Earlier, the booth is accompanied by an older guy. Round in the middle. Balding on just the top of his head. That same heart that which he does not know yet belongs to another. The other stares over the rink watching Eddie guide you along the outside of the rink. A hot heat radiates inside of him that he’s yet to come to terms with as jealousy. The jealousy that burns the bridge that connects a firm founding friendship.

Gareth waits for you to come around to the beginning again where the rink opens. He no longer cares for the songs that are playing, but would rather just have you back in his arms again.

For a split second, Gareth calms his jealousy by taking a glance over at the two expert skaters they came with. Jeff and Robin are jokingly creating a new routine. That’s when he hears it. A yell. Boom! You’re flat across your stomach, while laying along the hardwood floor.

Gareth speeds onto the rink nearly toppling over a few of the other skaters. It just so happens that someone came around a corner too fast, and slammed into Eddie, who then slammed into you.

You’re alright, but your knee does feel a bit of a sting. The rink might just not be your speed after all.

“You alright?” Gareth hoists you up with Eddie. Soon, come Robin and Jeff begging to know what has happened. “Let’s get her off the rink.”

“I’m fine,” you reply with an achy grunt. Most of the impact is across your knees anyway. A bit of rest, and you’ll be as good as new.

You make it off the rink, and find yourself sat next to Freak. He sits hugging his second round of nachos, while completely indulging in Jeff’s friendly agreement to pay for food.

“You okay?” Freak grunts. The man is of few words.

“Yeah,” you assure with the initial pulsing fading away. They’ll be purple by the morning.

Gareth comes whizzing around you with a cup of ice to hold at your knee. That’s the only gesture that the cheapskate employee hovering about the food court would offer for free.

At the same moment you want to thank Gareth for looking out for you, a second player comes to bat. Eddie also has brought you ice.

“One for each knee,” your attempt to split the tension in the air. Indeed, a bit awkward for the boys.

Were you aware of the tension, or were you simply being friendly? A hand grazes the spine of your back. It’s Gareth, of course. Those soft eyes could make you melt like ice cream left out on a sunny day.

The thing about dating is that the person you’ve grown so close too has made you forget what either of you argued about daily. Those petty squabbles don’t seem so important now.

“The hell, man,” Eddie stumbles over his words. The green eyed monster is coming to buy himself a home inside of Eddie’s brain. “Are you? When did you?”

Evidence lays before him. Gentle touches. Far away gazes. Gareth laying his hands on you is the final wire that ignites Eddie’s brain. How could something like this have happened? How has he been so oblivious?

Questions arise like bile. None of which comes clean out of his lips. Eddie’s talking to himself now. Gareth can’t even get a word in to explain. The whole time Gareth thought that maybe Eddie could be happy. Because after all, didn’t Eddie want them to get along? And, you are. In a way.

You watch as Gareth chases down Eddie, who’s skating away at such speed. The pleasant day at the roller rink ends, as Eddie is ripping off his shoes without a single word to spare to Gareth.

Meanwhile, Robin nudges Jeff. The pair stand ideally by soaking in the soap opera before them. Neither have put a word in, but rather speak only so loudly that they can hear.

“That was awkward, right?” Robin whispers to his ear.

Jeff nods, “very.”

While Eddie might be dubious of your relationship with Gareth now more than ever, neither of you let the moment at the roller rink spoil the budding relationship you have with each other.

Kissing the skin of your knuckles, Gareth has gotten cuddly in the past ten minutes with you. He finally has you alone, and to himself.

There’s no one at his home to interrupt the lovers.

Gareth’s home is quiet with sleep. You reject his offer to come inside because you can’t fathom waking his mother at an hour like this. Instead, you hop on the front hood of your car. Sitting next to each other like two peas in a pod.

“We’ve been on a few dates now,” Gareth starts slowly with a thumping deep in his chest.

You agree, “we have.”

The night air kisses your cheeks with a bite of cold, but suddenly the apples of your cheeks feel quite warm. Gareth’s body heat radiates against your left side. The long sleeved shirt you wore can’t save you from being too frosty. Gareth nudges closer to you.

“Do you- er- like spending time with me?”

“Yeah,” you blush.

There’s a pregnant pause, as Gareth tries to form the words of what next to say. He knows what he has to say, but he doesn’t quite know how to say it. The past month has been the most alive he’s felt in years. You’ve awoken a part of him that he didn’t know existed.

“I-,” he clears his throat. “I like spending time with you. And, er- we’ve been going out a while. I guess-,” Gareth takes a deep breath, before landing the words, “I was wondering if I could call you my girlfriend?”

You’re not too shy to kiss his lips. Something you’re quite used too now. The sweetness from your chapstick bounces back to your mouth, as you share this moment together.

“I’d like that a lot,” you bite back a yell of pure joy.

Gareth couldn’t keep the shit eating grin from his face, and he connects your lips again.

hey, can I ask you for some advice? sorry if this is uncalled for or you just can't answer this, I understand if so

how did you work up the courage to actually get to HRT so fast? I've found out I was a trans woman around when I was 15 and im about to have my 23rd birthday, and due to my financial/working/academic/housing (I live w my fairly conservative parents) situation it does not look like it's in the cards for me any time soon. but also I feel like I should just try to find a way and try to start out ASAP, for the sake of my own happiness. but also im afraid of whatll happen if things go Topsy turvy and I need housing from a family that thinks I'm a freak. how did you do it? again, apologies if this ask feels unwarranted or to big to ask to "Funny lady play tf2 dot blog", but I'm fine if this doesn't see an answer

First of all, I don't have insurance, so keep in mind that I did it out of pocket (note: I am broke).

I used Zocdoc (America only, sorry) to find a hormone therapy consultation, went to that appointment, and they referred me to an endocrinologist. After I got some blood tests done, I got prescribed a 30 day supply of sublingual Estradiol for about $16, again, without insurance. Now, this is of course in Biden's Seattle so it might not be as easy where you are. But at least for me, the process from booking the first appointment, all the way to taking the first pill was about half a month, because I got lucky finding a doctor. During covid, according to my endocrinologist, there was a HUGE explosion of people wanting to medically transition, so a very common thing I've heard is that a lot of doctors are booked out for months. I was lucky enough to get this appointment on Sep 1st, because the next person available in my area wouldnt have gotten me in until November.

Critically, here's my main piece of advice: You can't start until you take the first real action towards accomplishing it outside of your head. You can think, and plan, and crystalize how great it would be if it happened, but you have to actually make the first step and google "HRT doctors in my area", and schedule an appointment. To do it, you must first do it. This goes for many things in life. Simply starting the processes instead of keeping them in my head had me accomplishing many things I never thought I actually would, like starting HRT, going to university in Japan, and moving to Seattle.

Many people like me, including maybe you, are really good at getting in your own head and thinking of every possible way something could go wrong, or could be denied to you. And you get so tied up in the reasoning that you forget about the Doing. To the best of your ability, try to stop thinking, and just start doing. Anything. Choose to do something that you have wanted to for a while. Just one thing. Doesn't have to be buying a plane ticket to France, or confessing a huge secret, maybe start with that thought you had the other day of "ya know I bet pottery on those big goofy wheels is fun" and google 'pottery wheels near me' and see where it takes you. It's easier than you'd think to try. And who knows, at the end of this process maybe you'll have a beautiful vase. Or, even better, a vase with a personality, flaws, and a new hobby that you're excited to get better at.

Former president Trump has always approached debates as professional wrestling events in which the key is not to explain policies or answer questions, but rather to demonstrate dominance over your opponent. In 2016 the Democratic nominee, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, had a hard time countering this strategy effectively because of the many expectations of what was appropriate behavior for a female presidential candidate. In 2020 and then again in the June 2024 “debate,” Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s stutter made it difficult to counter Trump’s scattershot attacks.

The question for Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris in tonight’s presidential debate was not how to answer policy questions, but how to counter Trump’s dominance displays while also appealing to the American people.  

She and her team figured it out, and today they played the former president brilliantly. He took the bait, and tonight he self-destructed. In a live debate, on national television. 

The Harris campaign began the day trolling Trump with a new campaign ad featuring the pieces of former president Barack Obama’s speech at the August Democratic National Convention that concerned Trump. “Here’s a 78-year-old billionaire”—the ad cuts to a photo of Trump in a golf cart—“who has not stopped whining about his problems.” Then a clip of Trump shows him complaining about Harris’s crowds, before Obama notes Trump’s “weird obsession with crowd sizes,” complete with Obama’s hand motion suggesting Trump’s sizes were small. “It just goes on, and on, and on,” Obama says, before the ad shows empty seats and people yawning at Trump’s rallies.

“America’s ready for a new chapter,” Obama says to the overflow crowd cheering at Chicago’s United Center during the Democratic National Convention. “We are ready for a President Kamala Harris!” At the end, even Harris’s standard statement, “I’m Kamala Harris and I approved this message,” sounds like a challenge.

This morning, the Harris campaign began running the ad on the Fox News Channel. 

At the same time, they began running Philadelphia-themed ads across the city on billboards, in the Philadelphia Inquirer, and on food trucks and taxi cabs, sidewalk art, and digital projections making fun of Trump’s fascination with crowd sizes. They showed, for example, a full-sized Philadelphia pretzel labeled “Harris” alongside a piece of one that looked like an upside down U labeled “Trump.”

The taunting might have been behind Trump’s demand for loyalty from Republican lawmakers this afternoon, telling them to shut down the government if he doesn’t get his way on the inclusion of a voter suppression measure in the bill to fund the government. The right has often relied on threats of government shutdowns to try to get their way, but such shutdowns are never popular, and even moderate Republicans are leery of launching one just before an election.

Nonetheless, Trump tried to lock them into such a shutdown, reiterating in a post this afternoon the lie that undocumented immigrants are voting in presidential elections. “If Republicans in the House, and Senate, don’t get absolute assurances on Election Security, THEY SHOULD, IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, GO FORWARD WITH A CONTINUING RESOLUTION ON THE BUDGET. THE DEMOCRATS ARE TRYING TO ‘STUFF’ VOTER REGISTRATIONS WITH ILLEGAL ALIENS. DON’T LET IT HAPPEN—CLOSE IT DOWN.” 

Throughout the day, the Harris campaign placed posts on social media showing Harris looking crisp and presidential and Trump looking old and unkempt. And then, for ten minutes in the hour before the debate, the Harris campaign held a drone show over the Philadelphia Museum of Art showing campaign slogans and then turning the words “MADAM VICE PRESIDENT” into “MADAM PRESIDENT.” 

Hugo Lowell of The Guardian reported today that Trump’s advisors were concerned ahead of the debate about whether they would get “happy Trump” or “angry Trump,” worrying that a frustrated Trump would engage in the vicious personal attacks that turn voters off. They expressed relief that having the microphones muted when it was not a candidate’s turn to speak would prevent Harris from irritating him with fact checks and snark of her own. Conservative lawyer George Conway noted that it was “[i]nteresting how one campaign is extremely concerned about the emotional stability of its candidate, and how the other is not.”

Harris’s attacks on Trump, including her campaign’s subtle digs at his masculinity, appeared to have accomplished what they set out to. When the two came out on stage, he went straight to his podium, while she strode across the stage, moved into his space, held out her hand, introduced herself and wished him well: “Kamala Harris. Have a good debate.” He muttered in response, “Nice to see you.” Then she took her own spot at the podium. When the debate opened, it was clear that Harris was the dominant figure and that her opponent was “angry Trump.” He would not look at her during the debate.

In her first answer, Harris tried to set out both her own story as a child of the middle class and how she intended to build an opportunity economy for others, lowering food and housing costs and opening the way for more small businesses. It was a lot, quickly, and she looked a little nervous.

Then Trump spoke and it was clear he was going off the rails. His first comment was to suggest Harris was lying, and then to insist that his proposed tariffs will solve everything, although he has the way tariffs work entirely backward: they are paid by the consumer, not by foreign countries. As he followed with a long list of his rally lies, Harris started to smile.  

From then on, he continued to produce rally stories full of wild exaggerations and attack Harris with lies in what CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale called “a staggeringly dishonest debate performance from former president Trump.” "No major presidential candidate before Donald Trump has ever lied with this kind of frequency,” Dale said. “A remarkably large chunk of what he said tonight was just not true. This wasn't little exaggerations, political spin. A lot of his false claims were untethered to reality." As Harris spoke directly to the American people, growing stronger and stronger, Trump got wilder and angrier and told more and more crazy stories. 

And then, about ten minutes into the debate, Harris baited him. She invited the American people to go to one of his rallies, where “he talks about fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter, he will talk about ‘windmills cause cancer.’ And what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom.” 

Trump lost it. He defended his rallies, said Harris couldn’t get anyone to attend hers and has to bus in attendees (in reality, her rallies are packed and he is the one who reportedly hires attendees), and then, in his fury, repeated the lie about immigrants eating pets. When a moderator fact-checked that story, he fought back, saying he heard it on television.

And from then on, Harris kept baiting him while explaining her own policies directly to the camera, and he took the bait every single time. He ran down every rabbit hole and appeared unable to finish a thought. Notably, he refused to say he would not sign a national abortion ban and admitted that after nine years of promising one, he had no health care plan (he has, he said, “concepts of a plan,” and if they pan out, he’ll let us know in the “not too distant future”). 

He threatened World War III and repeated that the U.S. is “a failing nation.” He told a long story about threatening “Abdul,” the leader of the Taliban; in fact, the leader of the Taliban since 2016 is Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada. In response to Harris’s statement that foreign leaders thought he was a disgrace, Trump answered that Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán, who destroyed his country’s democracy and replaced it with a dictatorship, says he’s a good leader. New York Times columnist David French wrote: “It's like she's debating MAGA Twitter come to life.”

The debate moderators, David Muir and Linsey Davis of ABC, asked solid questions and corrected the most egregious of Trump’s lies. But as he continued to interrupt and yell at Harris, they increasingly gave him leeway to do so. This meant he spoke more often and for more time than Harris; MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle reported that he spoke 39 times for a total of 41.9 minutes, to her 23 times for a total of 37.1 minutes. But the extra time did him no favors.

By the end of the evening, Harris had delivered a clear message about her hopes to move the country forward beyond years of using race to divide people who have far more in common than they have differences. She promised to develop an economy that will build small businesses and support a growing middle class, while protecting rights, including the right to make reproductive decisions without the intrusion of the state. And she showed the nation that Trump can be baited, that he lies freely and incoherently, and—perhaps crucially—that he is no longer the dominant politician in America.  

Immediately after the debate, the Harris campaign continued their demonstration of dominance. Harris-Walz campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon released a statement recapping Harris’s strength and Trump’s angry incoherence. She concluded: “Vice President Harris is ready for a second debate. Is Donald Trump?”

Then things got even worse for Trump. 

Music phenomenon Taylor Swift endorsed Harris, telling her 283 million Instagram followers that she felt she had to because of Trump’s earlier reposting of an AI image of her seeming to endorse him. That, she said, “brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth. I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election.”

After explaining why she was supporting Harris and Walz and urging her fans to do their own research, Swift signed off: “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady.”
