Honestly I'm just gonna infodump on my Buggy AU bc I am a garbage mammal and I have work in like. 50 minutes. And I don't wanna be an adult.
So Buggy is a fae. His island was called Mystique, and he was about 4 when a preliminary approximate to a Buster Call was ordered. By that point, the fair folk of Mystique were considered high commodities to the wealthy and nobles. It was notoriously difficult to get TO the island, let alone get a person collared and smuggled off. The Fae there had many different kinds but all of them had a sort of "magic" that people didn't understand. ((In truth, it's an advanced branch of Observation Haki that kinda sorta mutated in their species to have a higher aptitude for. It's not IMPOSSIBLE to parn, but it's highly unlikely because the methods they use rely on a secondary set of vocal chords.))
To have a Fae collared and under your ownership became synonymous with wealth, prestige and renown.
It only got worse when eventually it was discovered that the wings the Fae had were made of a unique chemical structure which could be used to make a drug. It gave incredible highs, when prepared one way. It made you highly susceptible to persuasion, prepared another. The latter method also seemed to act as something of a super serum to some. It activated the adrenal gland, and the psychogenic effects essentially bypassed the natural inhibitors in your brain. So you can perform feats unfathomable on Fairy Dust, but it also disables your ability to perceive pain, leading to severe injury, often self inflicted. Prolonged use also strains your heart and ner out system, which leads to death.
Fairy Dust became a sought-after drug for a long time before the Marines decided to step in. Under. The Celestial Dragons' thumbs as they are, the plan was to destroy Mystique and collar as many as they could for monitoring and control of the source for the drug ((and also have access to it themselves as needed)).
Buggy, his sibling, and his mother were taken that day.
He spent a good long while in chains, a slave. Covering his back is a tattoo over a brand. He has scarring around his wrists and neck. He was the only survivor of the escape that led him to the sea.
Fae age differently than humans too, btw. They age slowly but also are highly social kinds of people. So on Mystique, the general populace aged slowly, a reflective process due to proximity.
On the Oro Jackson, Buggy ages a bit slower than most, but he's fairly in line with Shanks' development.
Buggy's Haki awakened very early (both by typical and Fae stadards), but his control of the branch of it that his people were known for was lacking. He was originally going to be used as a party trick essentially for the Masters of the house, but when it was announced that he couldn't do the small minor tricks by the other Faes, trying to protect him, there was anger and outrage. He eventually got assigned as a dancer - the youngest of them all.
There was one party when he was about 6-7 ~ where he was put on the spot to do some 'magic'. Buggy quite literally could not say no. So he tries.
He can use the secondary branch. He clstruggles to control it. The range of his Observation is ridiculously high by any means if the word, and so his range of access to the energies is outlandish as well. He simply can't control the amount properly. It's too much for his small body.
The little sparkler trick he tried damn near exploded. Nobody was hurt, but a girl's dress was slightly damaged. Buggy was punished severely for it.
They tore his wings off.
Not even a week after that, a large storm hit the island. There was a fire. There was chaos. Buggy's mother died. He lost his sibling. He escaped, and fell into the sea after tumbling down a muddy slope.
He washed ashore days later and survived.
A few months into his new life on the streets, he tries to pickpocket a giant of a man with a gaudy mustache and even more eye searing clothes. He is caught.
Roger recognizes the way the kid tilts his head with the wind, the way his pupils follow movements usually unseen. He sees what the child sees, he hears what the child hears, and so he does what the child does - he steals.
He just so happens to steal the child.
Buggy is taken to a pirate ship, offered a meal, a bath, a change of clothes, and amidst his vehement denials and bristling defensiveness, a redhaired boy steps out from a small cabin, and they meet eyes.
There's a ringing of bells in three men's ears, one two three. Shanks brightens. Buggy stares. Roger blinks.
Buggy proceeds to then not explain a single thing ever. And life as a pirate begins. It's only a few years later that Buggy explains, half asleep in Roger's bed after the Edd War, what the bells were, why the ones when he met Shanks were different from the ones that reverberated across the Seas before the ocean herself rose to engage as well; why Buggy, still a Devil Fruit User, had been half clinging to the mast, half hunched, looped fingers at his lips as he blew an unheard whistle to the waves, lips moving before and after the silent sound, pupils sharpened diamonds in a sea of glacier blue.
The Seas may entice him to a watery grave, the oceans may be his eternal tomb, but Buggy can hear and request things of the land and sky and sea that mortal men could barely fathom. Bells, he slurred, wedged between his father captain and his best friend, are the sounds of magic.
Outta time now gotta go, if anyone wants to hear more PLZ ASK ME I'M FERAL. SHAKING THE BARS OF MY CAGE

bought some sparkles and finally thought of a request i wanted to send in here, could u write male yuu and rollo lighting some kiddy fireworks together?? specifically kiddy fireworks. like those sparklers and mini fountains... thank ye kindly
Rollo Flamme x reader Yuu sneaks out of campus during the winter break to come to visit Noble Bell College again, weeks after the symposium.
hi I'm back for like 5 minutes just to accomplish this request since it's now 2023 ... I'll get back to the regular reqs as soon as this is done i just sorta wanna rush seasonal ones a bit more before the season expires ahahahaaa. ;w; dont ask me when this happens in episode 4's timeline... call it the rollo timeline...... its not the first time twst has made you question when anything is happening...
The streets of the City of Flowers remain colorful despite the thick blankets of snow that weren't there before when Yuu was here last Halloween. He holds his bag close to himself while walking downtown, looking for a certain address...
Yuu left Grim to Ramshackle and the ghosts while hoping that the winter feast Crowley had prepared for his dorm would be enough to keep him entertained.
"Are you sure you want to go by yourself?" The headmaster asked him just before he left. The Dark Mirror was prepared just for this small trip during the break. Yuu explained to Crowley that he had become close with a student from Noble Bell College during the event and he wanted to see him again. Eventually, Crowley let him go after finding out it was the student council president himself.
Yuu would surely be in good hands.
༺ ❃ ༻
Yuu places his things down as Rollo still stands nearby. What could he possibly want to show him in the middle of winter? He stares at the small items Yuu is taking out of his bag. Some are store-brought, and the rest are locally made from some stalls in the city itself.
They're small fireworks. It reminds him of the festival where the two of them first met.
"I should've known," Rollo calmly sighs and gives the other a small smile. He adjusts the scarf around his neck as his voice returns Yuu's attention to him.
"Did you think I would come here for something else?" He hands him a sparkler and wonders if Rollo was going to accept it. Fortunately, he does take it from Yuu's hand. "This city is your domain, after all."
"You should know more than anyone else how the Night Raven students may possibly still feel about me. Look at you, you didn't even bring anyone with you," he laughs lowly. Yuu doesn't attempt to argue further since he wasn't wrong. The boys back at NRC would never think of wanting to see him again, and they would have stopped Yuu from leaving.
"Can we spend time together without worrying about anyone else?"
"You're right… Pardon me," he brings his hand to his face to cover his lips with his scarf. Yuu thinks to himself that this was the winter edition of his handkerchief habit.
When they exchanged numbers last fall, Yuu was surprised he had a Magicam account at all, even if Rollo says he doesn't use it often. He thought they would be exchanging letters as soon as the symposium came to an end. Instead, they've been secretly chatting from time to time. If the others knew, they would most definitely call Rollo a red flag, so Yuu never spoke of him to others.
Rollo observes the object in his hand, a stick that has yet to be lit with regular fire. One can perform tricks with their magic wand to display the same type of light that comes out of a sparkler, but this one is readily available to anyone, mage or not. Even someone like Yuu can come to engage with such a beautiful display without endangering himself in Rollo's eyes.
Yuu places a hand in his coat pocket to fetch his lighter but thinks of asking Rollo a small question. "All it needs is a small spark, so maybe it'd be faster if you lit these up for us instead," Yuu smiles innocently. It takes Rollo out of his head, being asked to cast magic like this…
"Or not, I was just kidding," he fishes the lighter out of his hand anyway when Rollo takes it from him.
"I would, for you, but I also figured this would be nicer," he flicks it open and lights the tip of their sparklers one at a time. Yuu wonders what Rollo meant by that because it could go two ways.
Maybe he meant it would be nice for them to not use any magic at all so Yuu wouldn't feel alienated like he does in NRC, even if his schoolmates didn't intend to make him feel left out. On the other hand, it's more likely that Rollo meant that it would be a good chance for Yuu to be away from people who show off magic carelessly. Yuu doesn't know how much he's developed since.
Either way, he felt nice about the temporary feeling of being with someone normal to him. It was like he was back in his world where he was just a regular person spending New Year like he would with his friends and family back home.
Their sparklers light up and flicker right in front of them, the gold flashes standing out against the backdrop of snow. Rollo holds his sparkler still when Yuu waves his around as if he were drawing in the air.
Rollo smiles to himself and decides to mimic his movements, but he isn't as vigorous as Yuu. He's calm and composed and preferred to move his sparkler like a conductor compared to his companion. "It feels nice being with you again," Yuu smiles while drawing an infinity symbol with his sparkler.
Soon enough their fireworks go out, but to Rollo, Yuu was much brighter and more delightful to look at than their sparklers combined. "Do you have more, by any chance?" He asks as if his bag isn't wide open next to them with more kiddy fireworks.
"I got a mini fountain."
Rollo assists Yuu in helping set it up even if he said otherwise. "I'm the one who planned to meet up with you for this, and I'm fine doing it on my own, Rollo."
"You went through the trouble of traveling here all the way from your campus just to light some fireworks with me, this is one of the ways I can repay you," he answers and lights up the wick. The two of them wordlessly step back as the mini-fountain's sparks grow bigger and bigger. It's brighter than the handheld fireworks just a few minutes ago and it bursts into a tower of yellows, reds, greens, and blues. It's loud from where they're standing, but noises such as these are expected in the season.
Rollo repeats Yuu's words in his head. He hasn't expressed how much he looked forward to seeing him again as well. Academic activities tend to become heavier as winter comes until it was time for a break, and here they finally found time for one another.
Once upon a time, he spent the end of his year with someone like this as well. They had all these small and handheld fireworks and safely played with fire like they were casting magic while wishing their new years resolutions would come true.
The time one spends with others is fleeting, and moments last as long as these fireworks. Gone in a few seconds, but a beautiful explosion of colors that one can look back on with the same joy they felt in that instance.
"What are your plans for this year, Yuu?" Rollo clasps his hands together as soon as the mini-fountain slowly dies down to a more bearable volume than when it was at its peak. He looks to his side where Yuu was standing.
"Survive. How about you?"
It was such a blunt answer, and Rollo pities him after seeing the expression he made saying this.
"Well, I intend to... make it up to those I've wronged in the past, perhaps self-reflect on certain things..." How could he sound so sure yet unsure at the same time? Yuu thinks to himself this. Either way, he knows fully what Rollo meant and he admires how much he wants to change for the better. Letting go of baggage is expected on New Year, after all.
"If I'm still alive by term break, I'm thinking of coming over to visit you again to see your progress," he smiles while placing a hand over his.
"Why do you speak like you have a foot in the grave? This must be their doing. Maybe you shouldn't return to Nigh Raven College."
"Rollo!"

The Moonlight Circus
a/n: This amazing story idea was a request sent to me, and loads of fun to write!
It was a cool morning, where you know you will need a sweater to keep the morning mist out, only to rid yourself of that weather once the summer sun finally greets the day. But, as the sun wasn't even close to being seen yet, James pulled his sweater closer around his tiny body. Maybe some poor soul would look at him and think ‘oh you poor child, stuck out on the street all alone, here take my money.’ But, as he had learnt in his many years of being alive, that was unlikely. You see, while he appeared young, James wasn't. And while he appeared human, James wasn't. There’s not a whole lot to learn about being a vampire, only that you don't age after you’re turned and that you need to eat at least once every few weeks to stay alive. And of course, it was just his luck that he was bitten as such a young boy, making his life even more of an annoyance than he thought possible.
Luckily for James though, there's plenty of shady businessmen in the world willing to overlook certain laws to hire cheap labour. So naturally, he was headed to the shitest factory in town, but hey, at least they didn't notice when the five year old looking kid went missing for a few days while he found something with warm, running, blood in it to eat.
Anyways like I said, it was a cold morning. And so he tucked his dirty brown hair onto an old cap, and trudged his way down a back alley on his way to work. Reaching into his pocket for his pack of stolen cigarettes he cursed.
“God damn it!” he shouted to the empty alleyway. “God damn lighter is gone!” He patted down all his tattered pockets. They all seemed still intact, but his trusty lighter was missing. He glared at the cigarette in his hand, maybe if he stared hard enough it would light itself.
“Heya kiddo those’ll kill ya you know!” The girl's voice seemingly came from nowhere, as did her cart, which was filled with every manner of fireworks and explosives. She was perched atop them all, her legs covered by a tattered frilly black dress swinging excitedly. Her balck hair was in pigtails and on her head were old fashioned flight goggles and a beret. But the strangest thing about her was perhaps the fact that hanging from her mouth was the biggest cigar James had ever seen. She seemed to be the same age (visually) as James himself. But he didn't need heightened senses to know something was off about her.
“You don’t happen to have a lighter in that bunch of explosives there do you?” He hated how high pitched his voice was. If he could just get out of this damn town and head out somewhere he wouldn't need the facade of ‘helpless little boy’ when he was anything but.
“Free use of lighter with every purchase!” The girl giggled slightly, her french accent slipping through more promentaly now. Hopping off the cart, her small shoes clicking against the cobbled street. He cautiously stepped forward. “Let’s see here, we got your basic fireworks, sparklers and ground spinners n’ all. Oh, how about some good ol’ fashion dynamite?” She continued listing off names having committed them all to memories decades ago.
“Listen, I really don't need fireworks.” He took his hat off to run a hand through his hair, eyes closing as he sighed. “Do you have a lighter or not? I’m going to be late for work.”
“Oh, so fireworks aren't your thing, I get that I'm more of a cannon girl myself. More boom less razzle dazzle ya know? But I’ll tell ya what, what you need my friend.” She started, jumping back around to the front of the cart and placing her hands on his shoulders, rubbing the slightly before he flinched away. “You need a distraction, stress reliever, and boy I know you need more than that cigarette.” James glared at her moving even further away from her grasp. He opened his mouth to say something but she cut him off.
“Let's make a deal, I'll let you use my light and you take this here flyer. It's for the circus tonight and I think your mental health could really benefit from coming by. Tickets are only fifteen bucks a person and trust me you ain't ever seen anything like it before. Whaddya’ say?” And in a flash James had an old run down looking flyer thrust into his face, gingerly he took it looking it over. It had the classic vibrant colours, faded with time giving the names of all the performers. All of whom seemed a little too ‘off’ to be human.
“Fine,” he said, knowing that sooner rather than later he needed to get going. “Now light my cigarette will you?”
“Of course mon amie!” She smiles as he puts the cigarette in his mouth, waiting for what he thinks is a lighter, but instead she simply leans forward, touching the lit end of her cigar to his cigarette. It's a strange gesture, and the shock of it all distracts James from the firework
She's currently tying to his belt.
“Thanks,” he says, taking a puff.
“Don’t thank me yet” she laughs as a he looks confused before being launched into the sky via the rocket. As she watches him depart she laughs to herself wheeling the cart away, hopefully the magic in the firework hasn't worn out and it will drop somewhere that's slightly close to where he wants to be. But hey, beggars can’t be choosers, right?
The sun had risen and was beginning to set again by the time that James was done work. He would feel tired, if he still felt physical emotions at all, and even though the girl had in fact lit his cigarette he felt like it was a drop out of the bucket of his stress. On habit he reached into his pocket for another, but instead he found the paper she’d given him that morning. On a second look he realised something, and he wanted to smack himself for not noticing it sooner.
“Sneaky zombies.” he whispered to himself, of course the young girl wasn't human. She must have been using some kind of magic to disguise herself earlier. But in the poster it was obvious. The still image featured her getting blasted out of a cannon, cigar still in her mouth, and all her limbs sewn together in mismatched ways. A process that looked like it had been done over and over again.
“So who else have we got in this gang of yours?” he thought out loud, walking aimlessly through the streets as he did. He recognized a siren, and a fairy in what looked to be some kind of water tank, another vampire stood behind the cannon leaning on it and smiling, waving goodbye as the girl flew through the air, stilled only by the photo itself. Off to the side was what he guessed was a ghost, more coloured added to their translucent skin just so that they’d appear on the poster. And in big letters at the top, the name of the circus itself: “THE MOONLIGHT CIRCUS”
And as if on cue, he started to hear the rumbling of a crowd nearby. Somehow he’d wondered more into the posh area of town, where currently there was the line for tickets. Tickets to - you guessed it - the circus. And with one check of the cash he had on hand, James joined the queue.
“How many?” The ticket master was a little disappointment to James, a regular teenage human leaning on the stand and scrolling through her phone. A cigarette hanging from her mouth, glowing a slightly menacing but bright purple colour, only looking up once he cleared his throat.
“Just the one, please.” He said firmly. And the teenager whose name tag read ‘Sam’ raised her eyebrows.
“Shouldn't you be with like a parent or something?” She asked, flipping her dark hair over her shoulder, letting it disappear into her even darker clothing. He glared slightly,
“No I shouldn't be with a parent or something.” He clenched out, Sam rolled her eyes at that and with a mumbled,
“Whatever man” she took his money and let him through, taking one more puff of her purple cigarette as he went by.
The tents were not your typical reds and oranges, but either way, the black, white and purple stood out so well against the setting sun it looked very unreal indeed. Purple flags sat atop every tent, flying in the wind, and the tents themselves sat almost hovering in the ground.
“Look at you! Ya made it!” The unmistakable french accent one again came out of nowhere, the only difference being that now the girl was sporting a slightly fancier dress that matched the rest of the circus.
“Yeah well, I figured I'd check out what other explosive tricks you have up your sleeve.” He shrugged. Causing her to giggle slightly. “You sending anyone else into the sky tonight?”
“Nah, my mère is operating the cannon, always has.” This did shock James a tad,
“Your mother, the vampire, is firing her zombie daughter out of a cannon?” He questioned. Causing her to giggle yet again.
“You betcha!”
“Ellie! What do you think you are doing?” the voice of her mother travelled across the fair grounds with ease. As she crossed the area to stand next to her daughter. “You best not be bothering this young man”
“Of course not mère.” Ellie says, “this is James, we met this morning.” her mother waves hello.
“Look at you, you're not even ready for the show, what are you doing out here!” her mother takes an ornate hammer that was in her hand giving her daughter a bonk to the head with it.
“Sorry mère,” Ellie says smiling at James with a shrug
“Well what are you waiting for, get going!” she exclaims, giving a particularly hard smack that sends Ellie flying out of the circus and into the stars.
“See you soon, James” her mother said with a smile, before turning away and heading back the way she came.
James turned around, looking at all the stands and small games that were available to play, he figured with enlightened sense he’d be pretty good at any of them, so why not give it a shot? Walking up to classic looking shooter game with a ping pong ball, he looked over to the games manager, only to be surprised for what felt like the millionth time that night.
“You!?” He gasped at the teenager who was still called Sam, despite him seeing her only moments ago indeed ticket line.
“Heya kid, you playing?” She asked, a fresh cigarette in her mouth.
“How much?”
“Two bucks per five shots, knock down three you get a prize.” She said looking down at her phone again.
“I’ll play,” he said, handing over the money. She held her hand out flat, letting him place the money inside.
“Guns over there are already loaded.” gesturing with her thumb, she looked up slightly, maybe this could be interesting. Sam doubted it though. He made the five shots, each hitting a target, but not in a spot that it could be knocked over. Reenforced bottoms in the cups meant that the player had to hit in just the right area in order to push them off of the tabel. And while Sam was sort of impressed with his aim, not one of the cups fell. “Tough luck kid.” she said, “wanna have another go?” James put down the gun with a sigh.
“No thanks, interesting set up though, classically rigged I would have suspected magic if nothing else.” With that Sam smiled a tad, maybe the kid was more than he looked, so she tossed him a:
“See ya around.” As he left the game.
As everyone shuffled into the biggest tent in the area, the anticipation grew steadily. Murmurs Of what to expect floated around, and James made sure to get a front row seat in the very unstable looking stands.
“Welcome humans!” boomed a voice from center stage, he recognized her from the poster. Natalia the Extravagant, and it wasn't an exaggeration. Her shimmering blue-ish pale skin stood out against the black stage, and the long black hair that covered one of her eyes added to the mystery of the whole show. A very elegant cigarette holder in one hand, the cigarette dropping what looked to be a blood like substance, was the only colour in her whole ensemble. But all eyes were pulled to the magnificent hat atop her head, frilly, like her daughter's dress, but with a centrepiece of a skull that briefly, James wondered was real. But the thought disappeared from his head when she spoke again. “Tonight! You get a glimpse into our world, let it dazzle you, because many of you will never see something so amazing again.” and with a laugh and a twirl of her gothic dress, she disappeared smoke.
Appearing again on one of the support beams she yelled down. “And now! Your first act! Temperance the dead!” The crowd erupted, as the ghost from the poster gilded onto stage, an old fashion dress sweeping the floor beneath her and a pointy hat that made her look much taller than she actually was. Her head drooped slightly, asif she was on the verge of falling asleep, but she lifted it up when she spoke.
“Well hello there all, how good of you to come.” The crowd was deathly silent, her chilling voice stealing the attention of everyone in the room. “I was just like all of you once, marvling at magic, learning it’s secrets as a part of this circus. And do you want to know what it taught me?” All eyes went wide as she floated up, waving her hands and conjuring something as she did. “Everything begins with a good story.” And as she put her hands out the entire circus transformed, like they had been projected back in time, and there she was, standing where she had been before but entirely human. Performing magic trick after trick, each getting more and more shocking until sparks started to fly out, all in red colours, slowly circling the girl until she was not visible anymore. And just like that the circus jolted back to real time where she was standing and creating the same sparks they had just seen, each spark taking over and surrounding the seats bubbling and bursting slightly with energy and each person started to float slightly in their seat,
“Magic unprotected can have consequences, even going so far as taking your life, and turning you into a ghost.” She laughed at her story, and with one last flail of her hands each person slumped back down. Then she spun around and in a puff of mist she was gone. And in her wake a water tank and high dive board.
“Anastasia the Siren and her loving girlfriend Gillie!” Boomed Natalia, the siren jumped out of the tank waving hello as she did, her holographic tail glittering against the stage lights. Using her pipe to blow magical bubbles at the crowd, one of them popping to display Gillie who then went flying around the edge of the tent leaving fairy dust as she went. This continued the bubble getting bigger and bigger, the fairy getting stuck in the and using them to carry her higher and higher until she finally reached the high dive board. And flipping off of it backwards she went plump biting towards the tank. Collective gasps went around the room, what would happen, her girlfriend would catch her right? She’d fly away at the last second and be okay? In fact neither of those things occurred, at the last second the siren breached the water and with an open mouth, swallowed her girlfriend whole. Once Again the crowd erupted in shock and awe clapping and cheering.
“What a wonderful couple!” Natalia said with a smile, “and now if it’s alright with all of you i’d like to introduce my wonderful daughter.” The cheering started again and with one last yell of “Ellie!” the twinkle in the sky took the form of the zombie that James knew all too well. With a twirl and a wave, she entered the stage via the stairs. The stage has transformed again leaving only a single cannon in the center, and everyone could guess what was going to happen next. But where would she go? There certainly wasn't enough room to fire that thing safely was there?
“Could someone give me a boost?” she asked laughing, “an audience member perhaps?” the crowd erupted. “You there,” pointing, “you look like you're stage perfect!” You would never believe who she chose. And of course James was more than happy to be a helping hand. Swooping down and lifting her with his vampire strength before setting her on his shoulder, allowing her to stand and then step into the cannon. Smiling he did a little half bow before returning to his seat.
The cigar was slowly lighting the dynamite around her as she took it out of her mouth to exhale a puff.
“Ready folks!” Natalia shouted, she got hoops and hollers in response. “Okay!” and with a graceful bow leaning on the cannon, the vampire took the cigarette holder out of her mouth to light the fuse at the end of the cannon using the cigarette at the end of it. And the comically long fuse started to burn.
“So you see,” Natalia says smiling as the fuse burns away, “my daughter here was really sick as a youngster, maybe due the fact that her mother, yours truly, is a vampire. But I digress, anyways, she always just adored the circus, and so when that sickness finally took her…” the fuse was getting shorter and shorter. “I had a dear old friend of mine zombie-fy her so she could finally live out her dreams of being a part of the circus she loved so much. After all, you know what they say,” the fuse was about to end.
“You only live once!” Ellie and her mother shouted in unison, and with that the fuse ended.
The boom was defaning, Ellie went shooting out of the cannon in literary pieces, dust flying out behind her as she took off into the sky. All heads turned desperately trying to follow her trajectory, but all that was left was a twinkle in the sky. When the eyes met center stage again, it was empty, nothing was there. With One final cheer the crowd went crazy. And James, he just sat there smiling, clapping slowly in appreciation. When no one appeared again people started to file out, only to notice that everything was gone, the only remnants of the circus was the large tent that they had all been sitting in. people exclaimed how cool and original it was, and some tried to rationalize and figure out all the tricks they saw. James chuhckled as he heard one man claim he knew every trick in the book and how it was all just ‘lights and smoke’ oh if only he knew.
James hung around, until all the people left. Before ducking back into the tent,
“Ellie!” He whisper shouted, looking around. “Hey Ellie!” he felt a cold presence enter, and then move right through him. Yelping as he saw the ghost appear in front of him, having just passed through his body.
“What do you want with Ellie?” she asked, crossing her arms in front of her. “Just wanted to say what a good job she did.” Her eyes narrowed.
“Vampire, right?”
“Yeah” James confirmed.
“Yeah Ellie said you’d be coming by, and usually she's right about that kind of thing. Come on.” And with that she glided back out of the tent, and into the tree line with James jogging to keep up with her.
Ellie was perched atop a couple boxes, her mother sewing one of her arms back to her shoulder, the siren and fairy leaning on the edge of the tank smiling and giggling to each other, and the teenager sitting with her feet against the box Ellie was on, cigarette mouth and phone in hand.
“I told you guys he’d show!” She exclaimed when James reached their clearing, Sam chuckled to herself. And James did as well, there was something intoxicating about this group that you just couldn't resist.
“Hey, great job out there, very impressive.” He could hear the smile in his voice, and he tried to recall a time when he was this happy in the past. Nothing came to mind.
“Not too bad yourself.” Ellie said, “you sure you don't have a little circus in ya?” James laughed.
“Nah, not like you guys, i'm just a factory worker” he wasn't aware that everyone was looking at him now, and Natalia was getting an idea.
“You know, we could always use a hand around here.” She said slowly.
“You gonna meet my current paycheck?” he asked, trying not to sound too rude. Everyone let out a laugh.
“Not even close,” the fairy snickered.
“Cut it out you guys!” Ellie snapped, “You can’t put a price on the smile on someone's face.” She turned back to James, “so what do ya think?” he paused, thinking it over. A place where he wouldn't have to hide, somewhere he could be himself. And have something resembling friends and family.
“You going to share that fancy lighter of yours?” He asked with a smile. “How about I just buy you your own damn lighter as a present to congratulate you on your new job?” Ellie shot back with a smile just as big. Reaching her hand out, waiting to see if he would take it.
“Well,” James chuckled, “I'd have to be stupid to turn down an offer like that.” And with a shake of the zombies freshly stitched on hand, the circus adopted one more member.
Six Months later, the circus is touring the warmest areas of America, now advertising their first ever show with a male performer. And James, well he had never been happier, he spent his days perfecting the tightrope act he and Ellie had designed. But as tonight's show was his first there was a little something extra in store.
“Alright now who is ready for the grand finale!” Natalia shouted as per usual, smiling to Ellie offstage and James who was balancing on the rafters. And just like normal Ellie climbed Into the cannon and Natalia was in the middle of her story, after lighting the fuse when the rest of the dynamite around her started to light up as well. Maybe her cigar was burning a tad too brightly that night. And the entirety of the cannon goes off in a much bigger explosion than normal, smoke engulfs the circus, and out of the corner of the viewers eyes they see Ellie fly past, grabbing James' hand and yanking him into the sky with her. And when they look back down, the entirety of the circus is gone, tent and all. Leaving but one soldering sentence in the ground reading: “Moonlight Circus is proud to present Starlight James!”

true story: corporate boys
in this first session i would like you to explain in your own words what developed when you went to repair their computer system:
sure thing doc. so these corporate boys are bad talking about women. degrading talk. minimizing them to a piece of meat. i always recoil when i hear such language. i want to go shower from just being close. they are not paying me, or my dirty rabbit, any mind because we are just there to fix something they do not know how to use properly. these corporate boys are important boys. they figure they can degrade women like this. so i speak up, say what they are talking about is so wrong, that they should stop. how i am ashamed to be there hearing these themes. well, the boys did not think i was a gnat. so, this one very important corporate boy comes over to me and puts his finger to my chest and says it is a private conversation and i should shut up and do what i was brought here to do and leave. so, i ask him, what about my dirty rabbit. does it have to shut up also? he stepped back removing his finger from my chest and said what? i repeated my dirty rabbit. it have to shut up also? then the other important corporate boys mosey over. the most important corporate boy starts telling them what i was asking. i pointed toward my dirty rabbit who has now made itself known. say boys, it is all a misunderstanding i offer. how about my dirty rabbit perform a magic trick, just so you know there are no hard feelings, and maybe i should not have spoke up. the most important corporate boy said how right i was, and they comment on how large the rabbit is and they all decide to see a magic trick. well…
my dirty rabbit comes close. it kinda reeked a little from some vomit it had not cleaned off its matted fur yet. smelled like stale whiskey. the boys all together step back some as the rabbit approaches, shows three round cat’s eye shooters. it motions for the most important corporate boy to come close. he slowly walks toward rabbit. the rabbit gives all three small round glass balls, cat’s eye shooters to him, and the boy takes them. immediately they burst into a flame burning the boys hand and he drops them.
my rabbits eyes twinkled. when the first one hit the floor it shattered and half those corporate boys turned into tiny little piglets. the second hit, shattered and the most important corporate boy turned into a giant sow running and squealing over to the tiny piglets, and lying down on its side. all those tiny piglets started suckling on the sow.
the third one shattered and the remaining corporate boys turned into wolves that immediately attacked and devoured all the piglets and sow. when they had finished, they exploded from eating so much. all their flying pieces did this little sparkler fizzy thing and just then poof. quite magical. by now my dirty rabbit and i were in the elevator going down to the level floor. i glanced over at my dirty rabbit, its matted fur, dry cracked blood almost gone from its ear. the rabbit caught my eye and we just grinned for a second, then exited the elevator and left the building.
that do it for ya, doc?

RP Profile: Pachi Jovas
Race: Lost Ronso (Hrothgar)
Gender: Male
Age: 36, but acts older
Orientation: Pansexual
Marital status: Single, has too much else going on to worry about relationships
Occupation: The Yellow Jongleur (or so he fashions himself as one; Red and Blue don’t seem to like him. Otherwise, he is a free citizen of Eulmore so he can more or less do what he likes)
Appearance: Blue fur (I am colorblind apparently it’s lavender in game oops), arcane markings painted throughout. Has deep black eyes and markings around them to make it look like part of his face is covered in soot. Tends to dress extravagantly in clothes befitting a free citizen of Eulmore. In his motley as the Yellow Jongleur, he obviously wears yellow, his favored color. Large and built, like the rest of his race.
Combat: He’s a Magus (or Black Mage, as they’re known on the Source) favoring the flashiest of spells. He has some knowledge as a Devout, but only so he has access to every element on the elemental wheel. Doesn’t know much, if anything, in the way of healing magic. He’s a tricky fighter, using explosive spells as a distraction for his more effective spellwork.
Personality: Jovial, outgoing, performative, wise, knowledgeable, introspective, studious, tricky, knows more than he appears to, very sad on the inside
Vices: Shows off a lot, great at lying
Virtues: Charitable, brings joy and hope, great with children, can’t resist helping people
Hobbies: The jester’s tricks of the trade - fire breathing, juggling (batons, fire sticks, knives), acrobatics, knife throwing, fireworks, sparklers, tightrope walking, costume making, even some song and dance.
History: Born and raised in Eulmore, he remembers what it was like before Lord Vauthry took over. His parents were soldiers of the army and died fighting against sin eaters, which Pachi has never forgotten. When he discovered he had the Echo, he set out into the world to do what he could to make it right, meeting the rest of his Cluster and journeying with them until all but Pachi and Majv met their end to the sin eaters. Afterward, when Majv decided to give up, he made his way back home to try and do what he could to help the people there. He’s privy to some of Eulmore’s secrets, but does a lot of helping behind the scenes.
Philosophy: “When nothing in the world matters, nothing matters more than the world.” Aggressively anti-nihilist, wants to ease the suffering of as many people as he can, and bring them joy while doing so - and genuinely help them, not like what his fellow Eulmorans are doing.
HOOKS
The Yellow Jongleur: As mentioned, he spends a lot of time around Eulmore spreading good cheer and charity in his obnoxiously bright yellow motley. Your character might have seen him around, distributing real food to the masses in secret instead of meol, especially those among the Derelicts and Gatetown.
Friend to all Children: Pachi is great with kids - nothing brings him greater joy than bringing smiles to the faces of children all around Eulmore. If your character is a child, young adult, or has children, they would certainly get along.
The Echo: Pachi bears an incomplete version of the Echo, like any of his type in a Cluster. His Echo gave him a deep mental and emotional bond to seven other people, but of those only Majv Saga is still alive. The two went their separate ways, dealing with the trauma on their own. Pachi’s particular version of the Echo allows him to Scry into another world - the Thirteenth Shard, the Void. Because of this, he knows there are other worlds out there. If your character approached and told him who they were, he would be taken aback momentarily, but altogether not surprised.

Blue Seed
“LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!” The boat rocked from stirring waters, and aboard it’s bow a boisterous Lalafel spun atop a crate. “Behold my magical prowess and be amazed!” A crowd had gathered and threw gil by the piece into the lalafel’s hat as the tiny magician performed meager tricks, spitting fish into the air from nowhere and tossing exploding bombs of sparklers around for show. The crowd cheered and jeered, amazed at the performance. At the stern of the boat a singular miqo’te stood leaning on the edge, flicking a cigarette off into the endless blue.
“You are lost, friend?”
There were many things that a miqo’te keeper could be, and lost was usually one of them. He had been thinking recently, quite intently at that, and seemed lost in such thoughts. Still, having it pointed out was not always something to be desired.
“Oi, I’m fine. Not lost at all” Boon replied as he stared off the edge of the boat, his one good eye seemingly lost in the expanse of memories of his past. Corsa’ir Boon dragged on a new stubby cigarette, the same as he always did during his Noontime downtime. “Jus’ workin’ a job, same as always.” It was choppy waters that day as the ship bobbed and careened through the Sea of Ash (A fun term for ‘This is a lot of water near Aldenard’) and Boon was pulling double duty. First and foremost he was taking the slow route to investigate a string of crimes, and second he was making his first public appearance working for the East Aldenard Trading Company again in almost two months. This was a public vessel he was on this particular day, a galleon of sturdy build and overfull with civilians and merchant tradesman. Today he was starting his life up again properly. And yet he couldn’t help but feel...lost. Everything felt off.
“Not lost, hm?” The voice came again, this time more distinctly from Corsa’ir’s left. The voice of an old man, a hyur of graying years and deep wrinkles. “But lost you are. I can see it.” A glance told Boon that the old man wore ragged foreign clothes adorned with feathers and ivory, a headdress hanging on his shoulder, torn and more kept for memory than fashion, at least as far as Boon fathomed.
“Jus’ who are you t’ say that eh?” Corsa’ir turned to the old man, and the indignity dropped from his voice as he saw in the old hyur’s eyes milky blindness staring back. There was also a smile, crooked and weathered. The old man leaned on the same ship rail as Boon did, staring out over the sea. “I uh...sorry there.”
“Oh,” The old man replied, a whip of wind drawing gray hairs and feathers to flip and flutter in the gust and sea spray. “Do not worry young man, I am lost too.” The hyur’s shuffling feet drew him closer to the ship edge. “I have been left behind, and thus have no idea where to go next.” Bony fingers shuffled through a loose vest and pulled out a blue gem. “Here, see?” The man laid the gem on the rail. “The legacy of my people reduced to a parlor trick.”
Boon recoiled at first seeing the stone, a natural aversion of soul crystals driving him back. “Yer a-”
“Whalaqee. Yes.” The old hyur shuttered with a sigh. “Strange yes? Being lost, going through darkness times. Wondering if it is through parlor magicians that my people’s legacy lives on. The soul crystals move on, but not the ‘spirit’ of it. It is... disheartening to see it go quiet. But here... I am curious about you. You seem just as lost as I, if not more so.”
“I’m...” Boon started, and then stopped. His trail of thought ending there. A long pause followed as Boon burned down his cigarette, staring out over the ocean. “I’m not sure what I want anymore.” The Keeper flicked his second cigarette into the ocean. “I feel lost. Unhappy, confused...not sure why.” Boon’s drawl began to manifest. “All sorta came to a head when I started finkin’ about this girl, yeh? An then she proposed we get married an... well, I’ve been...unhappy? Or maybe jus’ aimless since then. Cuz loike, since then I’ve just been sorta shut off. I didn’t say yes, I just... said nothin.” Corsa’ir lit a fresh cigarette, and sucked in a breath. “An so I’ve been focusin’ on work. I should like that tho, yeh? Settlin’ down as everyone else does. Get married as everyone else does. But loike... I dunno. I feel...empty.”
“You have lost sight of your own soul, hm?” Boon’s features twisted at the words spoken by the old hyur, but said nothing in reply. They were right, but he didn’t want to admit it. The old Whalaqee hyur continued as the pause indicated his correct presumption. “The passage of... what do you call it, ‘Blue magic’? The spirit of it is not in the use of oddity magicks, but to touch the souls of others. Through feeling the hearts of others, we feel and understand ourselves more. The spirit of all things, and of ourselves comes into focus the more we reach out. That is who we are. Not...” The elder Whalaqee shook his head upon hearing the bow performing Lalafel throw a particularly large bomb into the air and zap it with purple laser vision. “- that.”
“An why say alla this t’ me? Eh?” Corsa’ir turned away to stare again at the endless blue of the ocean.
“Maybe in you, I see a younger me.” The Whalaqee pushed the stone across the railing. “Maybe in you I feel a kinship in our mutual lost states.” The old hyur turned and began to walk away. “Maybe in you I see someone I can help, at least in some small way. Maybe in you...” The old hyur was now walking farther away, the spray of the salt and sea deafening his words just a bit. “...my people’s way can live on. Take it. Learn of others, and of yourself. Then, pass it on when the time is right.”
Boon looked over the blue crystal, and very carefully touched it. “Huh... no reaction.” The Keeper pocketed the item then, cleanly and without much thought. Then, he went back to lighting his 4th cigarette. “Yeh... sure ol’ man. Sure.”

do you follow all the princesses like normal ponies, none of them, or one purple princess your only princess
I grew up with the stories of Princess Celestia like any filly - how she banished monsters and scared away the night. Spring Rain, Glitter Drops and I all got the chance to see her when she visited our village to offer young unicorns the opportunity to apply for her school when we were old enough. We were all given time to perform our magic for her and I remember how she clapped at my sparkler trick. She even told me I had a gift and would have no problem joining her academy for gifted unicorns. Regality, strength, and grace radiated from her very being. I wanted nothing more than to be like her.
Then, my horn broke. I became a danger to pony society with powerful, unstable magic I couldn’t control. My friends left for her school without me. I know… I know it was not Princess Celestia’s fault, what happened to me. But I hated her after that day. It regrettably, made what I did that morning in Canterlot so… satisfying.
I kept my ears open for news from Equestria while I was away, and so learned of Princess Luna’s return and Cadance’s rise to the Crystal Empire. I needed their magic. That was all they were to me.
Even now, after I aided Princess Twilight when she set them free from their confines, I think it would be best if I stayed away. I imprisoned them in stone and enslaved their homeland. Princess Twilight keeps writing to me with requests that I at least make an effort to see them - she believes Luna and I might have something in common, whatever that may be - but I will stay on my own path for now.
Yes, for now. At least.

It was time, for Angelica to take to the stage...
@aecorus
The Ainsworth Doll had prepared in a number of ways for the Grand Servant’s Gala, from social cues, party tricks, learning to dance, her attire for the evening Ball, everything including, a display of choreography...
“Ladies & Gentlemen, Servants & Human's, Spirit & Beast alike, I am Angelica Ainsworth, the eldest daughter & Doll of the Ainsworth Mage Clan,” She introduced herself with a loud enough voice to make her presence felt, Ainsworths were at heart performers after all...
“Gather, you honoured & distinguished guests, and this humble Doll shall weave yee a tale, a tale about Fae & Fang, of Fire & Life, a tale of the Dragon, of Avalon.” Angelica announced as she was presently performing a few cards tricks & shuffles with the deck of Nameless Class Cards she always had on her person, and by the time her introductions were finished she had the card she sought “Install, Archer Class Card, Gate of Babylon.” She commanded as soon she was draped in the familiar attire of Gilgamesh altered to tailor fit her physique & form.
“All gates, open & fire.” With that one command dozens of golden portals of distortion opened up around her and Angelica actually fired the Noble Phantasms of each one at the audience! Yet just as the first of them was to hit the bystanders, a different kind of portal opens up, in the shape of a huge flat diamond on its side like a distorted pane of glass it catches every one of the projectiles before they can cause any of the guests harm, Displacement Magic, the Ainsworth’s signature Magecraft, and for a few moments nothing happened...
Then, a whizzing noise caught the guest’s attention, then another as one of the Noble Phantasms whizzed by in the air above their heads between two smaller Displacement portals, giving the Noble Phantasms the appearance of fireworks zipping around in short bursts as the number increased, more & more portals were briefly opened in patterns to ferry the projectiles in controlled directions, making them look as though they were dancing in the air, not so much fireworks as Faeries... (cue the music)
The aerial dance intensified with the addition from a sudden clash of two Noble Phantasms creating an explosion of sparks right above the audience, making a sound similar to cymbals being clashed together as pairs would collide periodically from then on, the scene finishing with long spears rising to stand upright from the Gate of Babylon’s portals running down in lines of the aisles between rows of seats at regular intervals of distance, and Noble Phantasms colliding just above their tips fired diagonally from the ground at the far sides of the room, positioned just right that the resulting explosions gave the appearance of tall tree-sized flowers of mystical energies and gently cascading sparks like pollen or gold glowing snowflakes.
After a few more moments of silence before Angelica opened up a dozen portals of the Gate lined up neatly in front of her from one end of the stage to the other, and did the same with portals hovering roughly 6ft above them facing down. From here Angelica stretched out her hands as though she were about to play a piano, and started from the furthest portals where the Gates of Babylon of either side began pouring out Noble Phantasm projectiles in columns that fired upward directly into the awaiting portals above. Aside from their aesthetic to the audience they also produced a delightful and peculiar sound like that of violins, steel drums, and glass harps.
Angelica fires off the portals in a timed pattern so that they led toward the middle, then began to mix up the patterns of when they fired and for how long, giving the appearance that the performing Doll were playing a large musical instrument perfectly in tune to the music that was actually playing, and at its peak Angelica opened all the Gates in the row from the floor at once like a wall of fence posts of Noble Phantasms pouring upward now into a wide radius Displacement portal that both drew them in and caught them all just as it had at the beginning of her display.
Then, came the next act of her performance, the music started anew to a different vibe, a different theme, a different setting. Angelica began the next scene by opening a row of Displacement portals on the floor in front of the stage before her in the same position the Gates had been in the last scene, the lighting changed to a blue thanks to the ones of the theatre being dimmed allowing only the light of the portals to light up the stage itself. From here she shot up individual projectiles with a low force & loose momentum that sent them a few meters into the air before they arced over and fell back down and into the portal, like a shooting geyser of a fountain making for a beautiful display of light & movement.
Above her Angelica had to pairs of several Displacement portals positioned to make two circles, dividing the Noble Phantasms she shot through them to create spinning sparkler wheels of fireworks to complement the display of her ‘fountain’ before the stage. Suddenly she added a network of Displacement portals that formed as the projectiles beelined away from the stage out into the space above the audience, making it seem as though the Noble Phantasms or ‘Faeries’ were scattering before they all disappeared.
“Ig-Alima...” The Doll ordered as a large Gate opened up behind her bringing forth an enormous sword that looked like it had been crafted by Giants for Titans, and using several large Displacement portals once more Angelica divided the Mountain Cleaving Sword into small sections as it slowly exited the Gate of Babylon, making it appear as though it were a long body of some creature that was diving, disappearing before the front row of the audience.
Next she followed up on this concept by setting up a great number of Displacement portals along the floor right under the guest’s feet positioned at various pairs of angles so that when she sent the huge sword through only the wide edge of the blade gently lifted the seats of the audience as it passed under them like a huge circling shark beneath the water.
“Enkidu, Vimana.” With her next command came the centerpiece of Angelica’s performance, the King of Heroes’ Airship made up the body and wings, the Chains of Heaven Enkidu wrapped round on themselves and the overall structure to hold it all together, amassing at the front & beneath to form a great maw & limbs with Noble Phantasms of various swords used to create huge teeth horns & claws, and finally Ig-Alima the huge greatsword was once more divided by the spacial Displacement portals to section it off in an arc forming a long think neck. Complete with Vimana’s lasers powered up to provide a glow from within the maw & eyes of the skull made from Enkidu’s chains the entire makeshift structure finished to reveal a giant mechanical Dragon!
By manipulating both the Chains intertwined throughout the structure making up the limbs head & tail and the Displacement portals that made up the neck spine & ran down to the tail of the mechanical monster, Angelica could make the whole body move freely like the strings of a puppet, even using Vimana’s engines to simulate a roaring noise as the dragon looked over the crowd of the audience below, turning its long neck so its head hovered over as many of them as possible.
The piece de resistance of the Mechanical Dragon however was when Angelica used a great deal of focus needing to utilise bodily movements like that of a water bender in order to make it fly in a spectacular aerial display as it crossed the theatre in the space above the guests. The Ainsworth Doll had practiced for days tirelessly working on her Displacement magic and with the Gate of Babylon, but getting the portals to move in synchronisation mobilisation like she did, that was difficult...
Now came the tricky part, with that done Angelica set up a new separate network of Displacement portals in circles & in circuits over the audience in the space of the theatre to begin anew the ‘Dance of Faeries’ all around the theatre. The ‘Faes’ looked as though they were mocking the Mechanical Dragon that breathed a low yield burst of mana ‘fire’ from its great glowing maw in different directions, and they appeared to be ‘losing’ the battle.
Now sweating slightly from the effort that she kept stoically silent from as to not interrupt her own performance, Angelica opened one larger Gate portal and had the remaining ‘Faes’ flee into it... The portal closed and for a moment the play appeared to be over, after a few drawn out seconds however a Displacement portal of equal size opened up in the same position as the Gate had been, and from it came a new construct made entirely from various blades & swords making up a stick figure type body bound together by a small Gate portal at every joint, even wielding a long spear the ‘Fairy’ was as just a little shorter than an adult Human.
The Sword Fairy & the Mechanical Dragon danced in the air as they fought and with the Audience’s attention on the ‘battle’ no one could see the genuine concentration and strain Angelica was going through in order to keep up the highly strung display of light and movement. The Fairy appeared to be wielding a sword & shield now as it defended against the huge Dragon’s ‘flames’ but was still losing as the Faes had been doing so before, suddenly the tables tilted once more further into the Dragon’s favour as the Fairy was disarmed by the great beast’s tail, now floating defenceless across the theatre seemingly staring up at its impending doom.
Then, with another portal, the Fairy would be granted one last hope, Enuma Elish! the Sword of Rupture, EA! As the Dragon’s flames cascaded toward the Fae of Swords it powered up EA, the guests of the audience would feel their various smaller possessions floating in the air for a second before falling back to their original positions as the Fairy struck forth, the spiralling power of EA dispersing through the flames and blowing encompassing to entire Dragon’s body in light like a giant spiralling laser. When it was over the Dragon appeared to not have a scratch on it, however when it opened its jaws once more to unleash another torrent of ‘fire’ it abruptly exploded into a light show of colourful fireworks as the Fairy disbanded into individual swords or ‘Faeries’ once more, dancing in delight throughout the air before each one scattered into golden Gate portals waiting to receive them from different directions.
As the performance came to a close and the audience began an uproar of applause Angelica was once more lit up by the lights of the theatre as she took a bow, and summoning all the various weapons she’d used, making up the Mechanical Dragon and the Fae of Swords again as they took a second bow with her before disappearing for a final time as Angelica walked off stage with her head held high, and collapsing from exhaustion elsewhere...

John Carter Cash Weds Ana Cristina Cash, Johnny + June Remembered
Ana and John, you’ve officially raised the wedding bar for me. Not only because your love radiates like no other—but because every single inch of your sunny fall fete is woven with powerful meaning, and that’s what we live for here at Style Me Pretty. From the Lily of the Valley bouquet to the sweet infusion of musical talent and of course, the moments of beautiful remembrance. Perry Vaile captured it all with such heart, as she always does—soak in all the beauty here in The Vault.

From the Bride… John Carter and I happened to be in Los Angeles in July 2015, and I have friend who works at the Magic Castle, a private magicians club, who invited us to spend the evening there. What I didn’t know earlier, is that John had called my father over the phone and asked for his blessing first. When we arrived at the Magic Castle, John had to think quickly on his feet and coordinate the proposal with management without looking suspicious. They suggested that a magician by the name of “Jimmy H” do the honors of helping with the proposal. Jimmy H offered to do a few tricks for us in the upstairs area of the castle. He started by holding a deck of cards face down and asking each of us to each pick one randomly and had us sign our names on them with a sharpie. I got the Ace of Diamonds and John got the queen of spades. Then he had us merge our cards together with each others hands and magically turned the two separate cards into one card. Then, for a second trick, Jimmy H started waving his hands back and forth and in what was seemingly out of thin air, made a diamond ring appear! He handed it to John who got down on his knees and asked: “Will you Marry me?” …I was crying with happiness and excitement and of course said “Yes.”
For the ceremony at The French Huguenot Church, my niece Sabrina sang “Ave Maria” while my niece Gabriella played the violin and my other niece Abigail played the cello. John and I love to watch the show “Outlander” so we chose for my nieces to play “The Skye Boat Song” that is featured on the show on strings at the ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, John had surprised me by having Scottish bag pipe players play a special arranged version of “The Skye Boat Song” outside of the church. Prior to my wedding, I had a dream of bagpipes playing outside the church, but I have never told anyone, not even John. It was so beautiful.
We had three of 1950’s vintage school buses in the colors of coral, mint and cream that transported all of our guests from the French Huguenot Church in downtown Charleston to Middleton Place, where the reception was held. I arrived the the church with my father in a vintage white car from the late 1930s, John and I took that same car to go to the reception together. For our getaway car, we let in a mint 1950s Chevy Bel Air. All of the vehicles were provided by Low Country Valet in Charleston. Having these vehicles as a part of your special day made us feel like we were in a different era.
For the ceremony, I chose to carry a delicate lily of the valley bouquet. That was one of the things I really wanted. I chose it because they symbolize purity, humility, and the “return of happiness.” We had a good 30 minutes of the reception where we had the MC play some of my favorite Latin music, lots of it Cuban music which was a nod to my heritage. The majority of the entertainment at the reception was provided by The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra of Savannah , who also sang a beautiful rendition of John’s father’s song “Ring of Fire” which was written by his mother, June Carter Cash. Earlier during the cocktail hour of the octagonal garden at Middleton Place, a string quartet provided by Charleston Virtuosi entertained the guests under the Spanish moss filled oaks. Our signature drink was the “Ring Of Fire Mojito” which was a nod to both of our families. It was a mojito with mango nectar and had a rim of cherry pop rocks.
Since John has a special affinity and passion for collecting honey, our wedding favors were whipped honey by Savannah Bee Company. His grooms cake was also a honey bear that was playing the guitar next to a tree trunk with our initials and wedding date carved at the top of it. It was chocolate and had honey buttercream filling in it.
Since it was a fall wedding, I chose a deep dark cabernet for my bridesmaids dresses. We wanted our wedding to have an elegant and timeless feel. Our event planner, Ashley Rhodes of Ashley Rhodes Event Designs did an amazing job of executing mine an John’s vision for wedding. The bridesmaids flowers as well as the flowers on the reception tables had white, pink, and hints of cabernet to go along with the theme. There were lots of gold elements interspersed throughout our reception. From the large gold and crystal chandeliers hanging from our sailcloth reception tent, to the gold napoleon chairs and vases holding the centerpieces. We had three different kinds of textured and metallic linens in blush tones and ivory. Our wedding cake, designed by Minette Rushing of Savannah Custom cakes was four tiers with sugar flowers and had our gold custom made wedding monogram on it which was designed by Emily McCarthy. Our custom monogram was also on our wedding invitations, ceremony programs and napkins. Our wedding cake had alternating layers of red velvet and white chocolate raspberry for each tier. It also had a design that mimicked the church windows that were also featured on the wedding invitation at the bottom of it in white.
I wore my sisters wedding tiara as my something borrowed, the inside of my shoes were blue, as well as the garter I was wearing which was ivory satin with a blue ribbon (for my something blue) ,for my something old, I clipped a turquoise costume ring that was John’s mothers to the inside of my dress for good luck, and my diamond cross necklace was my something new. We had a “family table” that displayed various custom framed photos of mine and John’s parents at their respective weddings , including photos of our grandparents .
We had several favorite moments during our wedding. A few of the biggest ones were when we said our vows and when they pronounced us as man and wife. Another big one was when John and I were finally able to perform our choreographed first dance during our reception. We had been taking ballroom dancing for several months and we did a medley of Ella Fitzgerald and Lou Armstrong’s “The Nearness Of You” and the song “Hell” from The Squirrel Nut Zippers which holds a fun and special meaning to us. The dance incorporated Rumba, Swing and Tango moves. We also really enjoyed our sparkler send off at the end of our reception and getting into the mint colored 1950’s Chevy Bel Air get away car provided by Low Country Valet which had a beautiful “Just Married” sign on it created by Jessica Peddicord of Simply Jessica Marie.
Some advice for other brides and grooms… It is so important to actually take the time to enjoy and soak everything in on your actual wedding day, because it goes by so incredibly fast. I would also advise wearing comfortable shoes for both ceremony and reception. Usually, the ceremony requires the couple to stand for a certain amount of time so it is important to be comfortable. John and I also each chose to purchase a perfume and cologne that we had never worn before until our wedding day. I wore ‘Empressa’ from Penhaligons and he wore ‘Quercus’ also from Penhaligons. We plan to wear theses scents again on anniversaries so that we can remember our wedding day.
“… You’d know I need you every day that rolls around / Your feet would walk on velvet with gold all over the ground. / Your trails would be downhill, a soft breeze at your back / your skies full of diamonds / your nights would not be black. / Yes you would really love it, then if you’re ever down / I’d give you rows of roses – And gold all over the ground. / I pick you up and carry you ‘cross every stream I see. I’d bundle you in kindness until you cling to me. We’d sit beneath strong branches, my arms would twine around …” – Johnny Cash
