I do sort of wish western anime fans would analyze anime and manga from a framework of japanese historical and cultural context. Specifically a lot of works from the 90s being influenced by the general aimlessness and ennui that a lot of people were experiencing due to the burst in the bubble economy and the national trauma caused by the sarin terrorist attack. I think in interacting with media that’s not local to our sociocultural/sociopolitical sphere it’s easy to forget that it’s influenced and shaped by the same kinds of factors that influence media within our own cultural dome and there ends up being this baseline misalignment of perception between the causative elements of a narrative and viewer interpretation of those elements. It’s a form of death of the author that i think, in some measure, hinders our ability to fully understand/come to terms with creator intent and the full scope of a work’s merits
#exilley's diary#this is about utena btw like. yeah its feminist and a coming of age horror story but also#it was in part ikuhara’s response to the changes he observed in the corporate anime industry and an attempt to subvert those trends#it doesnt really help that i feel certain aspects of the show are filtered through translation and certain cultural emphasises are lost#like for instance. the blood type symbolism. or wakaba’s gestures with making packed lunches#theyre incredibly japanese expressions of conventional gender roles that non-japanese audiences might not fully resonate with

on the one hand I think inner demons could stand to have a bit more romanced rook specific content, but on the other hand the underlying in-built implication that 'yours is the one true voice of comfort and safety in my inner world' is a sentiment and intimacy so way beyond the romantic or the platonic or any secret third thing you could care to name that it makes me lose my entire poor little mind a bit. it's so big and fundamental — near-existential — that in that exact moment at least the distinctions kind of seem irrelevant.
all the people lucanis' mind conjures up along the way are relationships he has that are unavoidably mixed and fraught in some ways even when they're also full of love (they are fraught BECAUSE they're full of love) — the good in them inseparable from things that hurt him at the same time. (it's about: the basic disorganized attachment patterns this poor guy is dragging around with him. careful with those, they're dellamorte heirlooms. what you love also inevitably hurts you and you won't be allowed to have one without the other, you have to surrender parts of your soul to hold on to what little you have left: this is the story up until now.) and the idea that rook isn't that to him — that beneath the fear of wanting them when romanced (which is more its own separate thing because within this psychology, actively wanting something and not just clinging on for dear life to even a meager status quo lest you lose it is in itself dangerous bordering on catastrophic), this is a relationship where there isn't resentment, or guilt, or shame, or dread, or rage, or self-hate, or any of the other emotions that keep him paralyzed, unable to move this way or that. no debts, nothing owed of yourself and your soul's substance except what you can freely and safely and happily give. love and freedom don't coexist — but, I mean, you're almost starting to make me think........... unless...👀👀👀. the unconditional and undramatic 'you are here and I am here with you, you can be exactly how you are right now with me and it's safe for us both even though you're afraid it won't be, I'm not going anywhere' acceptance rook shows him here that he returns to them in the big romance scene, when it's rook who needs it. the way he's just. standing there in the center of it all, like a child desperately helplessly waiting to be found, hiding in the place he hopes you'll know to look first. (rook does know. it's one of the first things they say in there.)
in short the most important room in his little mind palace for the romance is the very first room — the one where rook isn't. where, in fact, rook cannot be, because they disprove the entire structure of the place with their existence and presence in his life. with everyone else he's putting words in their mouths about what they think of him, and rook is the one who actually gets to come in to speak their own words to him — and have him listen. ('he'll listen to you, he always listens to you', 'your voice is a comfort'.) of course rook isn't present anywhere else in there — at the risk of stating the obvious to a tedious degree, they aren't one of the locks, they're bringing the key. in the very finest 'the messenger and the message' sort of way.
#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#lucanis dellamorte#rook x lucanis#rookanis#dragon age meta#rook is his first brush with actual safe attachment. and to me and because of who I am as a person#nothing could be more romantically devastating or impactful fhdsjkfhs that's literally the unreachable wistful dream the pie in the sky#the garrus romance echoes too. some of the same stuff going on under the hood here#you know who else he's sneakily like too actually? iron bull. the 'no matter where I turn I'll hurt someone I love' and dissociation stuff#there's that whole line about 'walking close to the edge or whatever'#which is masterful as a diversion b/c what this romance is really about is feeling truly safe with someone#in a sort of weirdly realistic way that makes it struggle with the conventions of video game romance but sure is Doing something!#and I unwittingly made a rook who also is on that specific arc so it's working out just devastating for me thanks for asking#the part in andrea gibson's 'prism' that's like. there is no shelter in the womb it's where you learn the cord that feeds you#could at any moment wrap around your neck. Love how the world of the scu (shrek cinematic universe) is made up of fictional countries like far far away and duloc, vaguely european-looking fairy tale landscapes, and the country of Spain
#i can't remember any time they refer to it by name but they mention multiple cities#and they use spanish as an adjective or to describe the language#now that of course could be chalked up to translation convention thing but that in addition to a place that looks a lot like Spain#and has cities that are called Madrid and Santiago de Compostela#im going to infer that Spain exists in the shrek universe#shrek#puss in boots

Do all of the knights have names in your au? And how did you decide on them?
hello there, thank you so much for the message! correct me if I misunderstand, but I think this is about a panel from my galacta knight vs meta knight comic:
where Galacta Knight uses the word Vaýtita. it's not a name, it's a... actually you know what, it's so much more embarrassing! it's a term of endearment/a relationship designator from my unnecessarily complex whole entire sci-fi language i built for them, lmao 💦
here's the note at the beginning of my personal dictionary as a quick crash course:
Ei Vaýtita in particular means "my gravity". it's akin to words like beloved, my heart, or soulmate- an irresistible force in one's own life. it's usually used romantically, but it doesn't have to be. Galacta Knight says it here to be cruel, though i do think he means it quite wholly
when I go in for making languages, especially sci-fi or high-fantasy ones, i like to consider the alien culture that the language is formed in. for these guys, everything was star and space coded; they had no reason to care about "hearts" or "souls". they considered themselves star-like, and so gravity as a term was most important; it's the only thing that can really move them.
praise is about being bright or shiny or having strong gravitational pull; and insults, accordingly, tend to revolve around being dim/lightless or stuck in orbit around someone greater
(translation under the cut because this is already getting long, sorry... i love to talk about this... thank you for asking 😭💝)
phrase // literal translation (from starspeak) // english localisation or meaning
kalimépos // welcome first light // good morning astéskotei // dim star // derogatory but not blindingly so; you could use it pityingly or fondly in a pinch ei épios // me see // wake up ei Vaýtita // my gravity // term of endearment and a relationship designator used within a star-system, usually for equal partners eu desai Ílioz ai ei // you (are not) the Sun of me // this is basically just a rejection from Meta Knight. the Sun serves an important role in star-systems, and he's simply telling Galacta Knight to shove it. he doesn't say it very well, but he refuses to say Ílioz-ei and so turns to a slightly clunky workaround.
#galacta knight#meta knight#my art#starspeak#awtdy au#asks#i do not speak any greek (modern or ancient) or arabic and rely on google translate entirely#originally designed this language entirely for self-indulgent personal use so it's got its flaws and is ever-growing and changing#i formally apologise to any actual speakers to whom this probably looks very stupid as it is truly just words slammed around in the blender#if they mean anything in OTHER languages also i apologise; i try to make sure that they don't translate to anything but it's tricky!#was just obsessed with the idea of utilising existing cosmic designation conventions for their dumb ancient star language#also to the person who referred to this on my main comic as meta knight being ring-popped thank you for my life i loved that#my headcanons and worldbuilding

Do you enjoy underfell? I thought you disliked aus /genq
i don't dislike the concept of AUs itself, I'm just not a fan of like... the subculture that spawned around them in the UT fandom specifically and how it eventually took over almost all canon content (especially when it limits itself to the bros)
i like aus visually! i am an artist at heart after all. it's just that, if I'm going to care about them as stories and not just fun design ideas, my bar is uhh almost impossibly high the further you move from canon lolol.
#uf being one of those! the story is centered on certain characters (mainly asgore) behaving very ooc#so as a stickler for canon I don't have much interest in it#but there is a very clear visual idea and motif in the redesigns that ties every character together very efficiently#and also fucks like a rabid rhino#so i can appreciate its visual/aesthetic aspects instead#i mean you can't understate the impact that good *artists* specifically had on the proliferation of aus back in the day#good writing is almost inseverable from good characterization because dialogues and characterization ARE an integral part#of what makes writing good. while good art (as much as it too is tied to its own conventions) is free-er from the bounds of accuracy#as was as being easier & faster to consume. writing has to be read first. you can just look at a piece of art and go ''wow that looks sick''#without thinking about logical details/accuracy#you can show a pic of sans to an artist who's never touched the game and they might draw you the most gorgeous piece of art you've ever seen#it's significantly harder to do for writing#swap aus are a fun design challenge to see how you'd incorporate different aspects of some characters visual signatures into another#it's a game of translation of sorts. but if you want to treat it like a story well... the matter becomes a lot more complicated#answered asks#au tag

Genuinely really loving the tendency of official Doctor Who stuff to now refer to the Doctor in general with they/them pronouns
#Doctor Who#New Who#The Doctor#I am talking#I feel like the Doctor in the show just lets people assume whatever pronouns and gender#because people are going to make assumptions and whatever anyways#and going along with people's weird assumptions until there's a reason not to is generally the Doctor's MO#see: anytime someone is like 'are you here for XYZ reason?' and the Doctor's just like 'yes absolutely'#but I feel like if the Doctor had a reason to care about the nuances of human gender conventions in the 21st century#they would like they/them pronouns#also I think it's neat that Time Lords who do have an actual experience of gender#like the master#seem to use whatever pronoun applied at the time in question when speaking in past tense in English#rather than the human convention of using the current pronoun even when speaking retroactively#it's just an interesting distinction#and then that makes me think about translation stuff and how concepts about gender may not even apply in Gallifreyan#but this is getting too long for me just rambling in the tags

dandelion is indeed the worst but if he’s not present in the next book i would legitimately be sorrowful as the whole thing will become a slog . you basically cannot have the “short stories” era-of-the-timeline iteration of geralt without dandelion, it would be like eating unbuttered bread.
though it’s not like season of storms did them dirty, i wasn’t disappointed with it (… with regards to them), but since it’s literally been over 20 years since the saga was finished i’m trying to prepare for any potential reality
#however i will accept an absence of dandelion IN THE CASE OF we get to see geralt and yennefer living together in vengerberg#but if it’s regular geralt day in the life then if dandelion’s not there it’s gonna suuuuuccckk#i mean as in geralt’s life sucks without him. badly#and it also? sucks with him. good-ly.#it’s august and we don’t have a title yetttt 🥲 and they said 2024 … hmhm sure#i just feel like rupaul ‘and don’t fuck it up’.gif#like i’m excited but also wtf? new witcher book? are we on punk’d?#it’s not going to be the best but i’m hoping it will be at least as good as season of storms. not a high bar ok!#this from the person who was optimistic about the n*tflix show. don’t trust me i like to believe in the future#i was going to say ‘and i trust sapkowski more than i trust n*tflix’ and then i laughed.#i don’t trust him—i don’t even trust the version of him from the 90s and 00s!#one side of me can’t believe i’m still here after the guardswomen of kerack. and the ‘well i’m only gay for clout’ villain motivations#the other side of me is intensely curious wtf geralt will get up to this time and how witcher could maybe even denigrate further#but season of storms ending was actually good and = well it’s not like sapkowski forgot what it was about#then again it’s been 10 years and a bad adaptation since then so im biting my nails#all i ask : please stick with the naming convention of the other books. i don’t want to write an absurdly long or short name or acronym out#sooooo weird that in a few months i will be saying: there are 9 witcher books.#actually rn i just say there’s 7 and discount season of storms as a legitimate heir but mention it as footnote lol#i just hope i can survive until this new book and until its translation LOLLLL#they said translation in 2025 but you know the track record#new book: *releases winter 2024* | english translation: coming 2045!#jk i think they finally figured out that witcher is a money printer so they will be eager to translate it now and not waffle around#they kicked their butts into gear with the hussite trilogy so ! and they made new hardcovers.#the elbow-high diaries#new book 2024

I'm willing to at least hear out most of the "xyz plot point is heavily tied to abc cultural context" brands of posts but the "wwx isn't meant to be read as morally gray" and "the western fandom made up Sizhui being wangxian's son" brands of post make me feel like my cultural ignorance is being used to gaslight me
#mdzs#vent post#the filial piety stuff in relation to jgy is incredibly interesting and has influenced my opinion on him#being told about the whole mo dao vs gui dao thing was very helpful since that is completely lost in the english translation#whether or not wwx's self sacrificing tendencies are supposed to be a good thing is a conversation i find interesting#even though i haven't come to my own conclusion on it yet#but wwx not being morally gray??? bro was a major player in a war- no ones coming out of that spotless#i also just straight up don't trust y'all about what mxtx said on him being morally ideal#y'all take her words out of context or just straight up lie about what she said so often that#I can't take anything y'all “repeat” from her at face value. i need links to the sources before I'll believe anything#on Sizhui being wangxian's son:#thats so embedded in the text the only way I'd believe it wasn't the intended reading is if 7 seas straight up rewrote section of the books#because its more than just a few throw away lines and wwx calling him his little one#its sizhui being formally adopted into the lans (proven by the cloud pattern headband)#its the extra where they take him on a nighthunt/investigation without any of the other disciples#its the paying extra attention to his hw while doing the grading#its in the miscellaneous anecdotes Sizhui remembers from wwx even after he lost his memories from early childhood#its the baby stories and sizhui chewing on wwx's flute#its Sizhui's unconditional faith in the two of them#its in Sizhui's choosing the same instrument as lwj#that is their kid!!! not through modern western adoption but thats still their kid!!!#sizhui developing a close relationship with his uncle doesn't change that#Wen Ning is the cool untaking the lan babies on field trips. wangxian are the ones actually raising him#also mxtx has been pretty open about being influenced by things other than chinese classics#so using “well traditional Chinese story telling uses this convention” will never be automatically be the correct™️ take on her work#not to say her stories are completely devoid of traditional structures its just she mixes in other styles too

Finished reading through the Dungeon Meshi Adventurer's Bible last night. Very good, very interesting
One book down in my to-read pile... 7 to go lol
But! Something is bothering me about Half-foot naming conventions
The book says their names are like
FirstLast Father(s/z)
Ex. ChilChuck Tims
But Chilchuck's daughters are
Meijack Chils
Flertom Chils
Puckpatti Chils
(Or Chilz, couldn't find a definitive answer on how they write the father's name part)
So they all have different 'Last' names. Jack, Tom, Patti. All sisters with different 'last' names
So is it more like... a middle name? A second name? Then why does the book call it a 'last' name... especially when the father's name comes after??
Make it make sense
#i wonder if something was lost in translation you know#dungeon meshi#chilchuck tims#half-foots#naming conventions#i am aware that in iraq the 'father's name as last name' thing is common. which makes modern genealogy research in the area difficult#so that's not really unusual#but what's happening with the 'last' names here what is going on

the problem with dhmis is that all of its tumblr sexyman shit is completely 100% separate from the show itself but thats the only thing a lot of people on here know it for. which is a shame because unfortunately the undeniable truth is that don't hug me im scared, both the websites and the tv series, absolutely fucking slays
#like its so good. its genuinely unfairly good. literally no notes its a perfect series#if somehow you havent seen it then watch the original web series and THEN you HAVE to watch the channel 4 series#i love the c4 series it leans heavier into the comedy than the webseries does but shockingly that is to its benefit its so fucking. grahhh#sorry. the problem is that the tumblr sexyman human clock show is unironically one of the best things to come out od#online indie creators in the past couple decades. and is one of the Only examples of a web series being perfectly translated#into conventional television. sorry i just. grahhhh this show was a hyperfix of mine like 6 separate times jesus christ#tl;dr I LIKE PUPPET GORE. do you think the minimal amount of untranslated german that's going to be included at the start of the anime's nel arc is going to be just as awkward as season one's untranslated english was
#bolo liveblogs#blue lock#a while back one of my mutuals suggested that the non-japanese nel players be given mouth flaps separate from their audible dialogue#to emphasize that we're hearing them through a translation convention. which would be neat I think

thinking about the fact the Frankensteins named their son William. did they want their son to have a fancy foreign name? did they want him to be a specialest little boy with a name like an English king? did they name him after Shakespeare?
#I know it was probably just ''translation convention'' since Henry's name is also spelled as Henry and not Henri#and Elizabeth is just Elizabeth and not Élizabeth (though that could just be print issues since English doesn't have those accents)#but those are still mostly similar#if the native form for that region of Switzerland was used then William would've been Guillaume#or Wilhelm if they preferred German since they named their other son Ernest#idk it's funny to think that the Frankensteins would be that kind of parents who#name their children some pretentious foreign variant of a common regular name#frankenstein#the modern prometheus#mary shelley
