Man, let me kvetch for a moment: I hate being a broke-ass writer. I want to go pro and to do that I need people who can advise me and help me find my way in the industry. And one of the best places to make those contacts is at conferences. Where the price of admission is a sizable fraction of my rent. 😑

Meanwhile there's people I know who've spent the last fifteen years rewriting the first chapter of their crime thriller while they live off their spouse's income, and I get to hear how they paid for an agent to look at their manuscript (that we both know they won't actually finish) just so they can have their ego stroked.

I don't grudge them their good fortune, but come on. Feels like I'm starving and other people are complaining that their filet mignon isn't cooked the way they like it.
