I’m having a lot of thoughts about Messner-Loebs’ Wonder Woman run, and trying to quantify them in a coherent manner.

Part of the problem is setting out clearly in my head what’s dated, what’s offensive, what’s Loebs trying his best (and failing), what is partly a complete lack of language to explain what he’s describing, what’s giving me 1970s political feminism vibes, and so on.

Mostly what I want to do is provide multiple lectures on intersectional feminist theory from the future, because the most frustrating part of reading this is I can see where Messner-Loebs is trying. Frequently failing, but despite a large amount of misogyny, he pretty obviously was thinking about writing women.

First point, and the one that’s going to be a sticking one for a lot of people: you are not going to enjoy these stories at all unless you can think of them as historical period pieces. The way Messner-Loebs thinks and writes about the concept of gender and of women is going to catch you off guard, if you try to come into this expecting to see anything even remotely current reflected. He’s actually lucky in that due to being sensible enough to avoid a lot of feminist and gender terminology and instead simply portray concepts, he’s managed to sidestep getting frozen in amber using language that would get him cancelled today.

That said, Messner-Loebs clearly sees misogyny as a challenge that women and the Amazons as a race have to face head on. So there’s a lot of depiction of it, both deliberately and in passing. The fact that his opening storyline on the series was heavily based in the sexual violence implicit and explicit in becoming the host for a female demon ‘wife’, followed up by a space adventure revolving around a gender-divided species who hate and enslave women…it’s not subtle, and it’s a slog to get through.

Messner-Loebs can’t decide if he wants to write “Diana: she’s just like you, with the same problems YOU have” or as an Amazonian Warrior. So he sort of vacillates between the two in the most awkward manner (back to back ‘space pirate queen’ and ‘working in fast food as she needs money’ is pretty eye-rollworthy, as is ‘assassins but we’re discussing Etta getting anorexia for her wedding dress’).

I think it’s interesting and infuriating in equal parts and has me stopping to work out my feelings frequently.
