Impossible (part two)
A/n: Good day, actually no horrible day but whatever, Im still writing. Im sorry for the wait guys.
kinda short sorry.
prolouge one three
Pairing: reader x eris, reader x azriel, azriel x eris
Wc: 1000+
⚠️: curse word
*****
Eris’ POV
Eris held back a yawn as he and Azriel waited for Rhysand to show up. He’d begged invited you to join them but you’d merely said you’d think about it before retiring to your room. Technically his room but he hadn’t gone back, instead going to tediously long meetings with his council members. He’d been up more than 14 hours, he had a right to be tired (and to a nap). Next to him, Azriel didnt seem remotely tired even though he’d been up at least two hours more than Eris.
Eris studied the shadowsinger out of the corner of his eye. He seemed relaxed, watching servants go in and out while carrying supplies for a toilet.
“Are you going to continue watching me creepily or be polite and look away?” The shadowsinger didnt even bother to look at Eris as he spoke.
She’s not yours
Eris sighed, looking away. “Do you love her?”
Now Azriel turned to look at him, face cold. “That’s none of your business, High Lord.”
“It is my business because you are in my court and probably stuck here for a long period of time.” Eris turned to face Azriel as well, face hard as he thought back on the shock of the morning.
Azriel opened his mouth, about to respond when a very angry Rhysand and Cassian stormed through the doors, sending the servants scurrying.
“What happened?”
Eris and Azriel looked at eachother and Eris smiled, shoving the spymaster forward to face his High Lord. Azriel shot him a dirty look over his shoulder and grimaced as he faced Rhys.
“Hello Rhys, how is your evening?”
Rhysand raised one eyebrow, “You’re not usually one to make small talk Azriel. What the Hell is going on?”
“I accidentally made a promise to stay in this room until me an Y/n worked our… problems aside.”
Rhys sighed, strolling forward and pulling Azriel into a brotherly embrace. He whispered into Azriel’s shoulder, “it’ll be fine Az but if she rejects you, let her go. She deserves her happiness as well and if it’s not with you than believe she will choose someone worthy.”
Eris smiled, suddenly glad Rhysand was good with words. He agreed wholeheartedly with the High Lord and really hoped Azriel would follow the advice.
Cassian eyed Eris before joining the group hug, wings wrapping around his brothers. Eris sighed, smile falling. How he wished he had a relationship as whole and strong as that. He had Lucien of course, but he was usually with Helion, learning how to be a High Lord.
Refocusing his attention on the Illyrian warriors he nodded in greeting to Rhysand and the Illyrian nodded back, albeit warily. Eris couldn’t even blame him for that, he had talked to Morrigan at his mother’s bidding and the two had understood eachother (mostly). But she hadn’t had courage to tell the Inner Court the true story of what happened on that day so until she told them, Eris was still a half enemy.
“Will you take care of my spymaster as long as the lovebirds need to… sort this out?”
Eris nodded, “Will you repay the expenses of building a triple sized bathtub for Azriel?” He smirked as Rhysand eyed the half finished bathtub that was barely 3 quarters of Azriel’s wings spread out.
The High Lord groaned, “yes I will.” But turning to Azriel he mumbled, “that’s coming straight out of your salary.”
Cassian laughed, clapping Azriel on the back. “I finally get payed more then you, brother.”
Azriel mutters something Eris couldn’t hear and the Illyrian’s say their farewells. Azriel watches them go for a while and Eris turns to see how the construction of the giant bathtub is going, still wishing for the impossible (improbable).
She’s not yours.
“You were nice today.” Azriel’s words sound more like a question which honestly offends Eris slightly.
“What do you mean? I’m always nice!”
The spymaster just rolls his eyes and goes to sit against the wall, wings spread out. Eris sighs joining him. “I wasn’t nice, I was civil. But it’s not for anything other than her.”
Azriel visibly tenses, “she’s my mate Eris not yours. The mother paired her with me.”
This time Eris rolls his eyes, “of course, of course. I won’t make a move until she rejects you, after all you are the one who chose Elain over her.”
“Shut it. Why can’t you be civil with me? Why must you be so…uncivil?”
Eris snorts at the choice of words, laughing as the shadowsinger glowers at him. “I cant be civil with you because you’re her mate. Not me. I swear sometimes I can practically feel the Mothers hatred.”
Azriel shook his head his words.
They sat like that for a while before Eris made up some lame excuse to leave which Azriel scoffed at.
Smiling to himself, Eris shifted, starting to stand when he heard a noise that immediately made him hard glance back at the spymaster.
The spymasters head was tipped back in ecstasy and Eris realised that his untamed, slightly curly hair was brushing against the tip of Azriel’s wing. Eris started to pull away but hesitated as Azriel didn’t make to move. He unabashedly took in the spymasters handsome face.
As Eris watched, Azriel slowly opened his eyes to look at his wing where the two touched. Eris froze. Maybe he should have pulled away, what if Azriel got defensive about his wings? Stiffening slightly Eris took a step back and tensely glanced around. All the servants were gone and the remaining fourth of the bathtub had been finished. How long had they been here?
Turning back to Azriel he spoke, “I-”
Their eyes met and something reached out from Eris’s chest, near his heart. Eris blinked, tugging on the invisible string that ended with a certain shadowsinger.
Azriel responded in kind, tugging on the bond as the two males gawked at eachother. They couldn’t be mates, Azriel was already paired with you.
Silence and then Eris practically sprinted out the front door, head spinning from the encounter.
They weren’t mates. They couldn’t be. No. No. This is just some shitty dream that his brain made up.
but… if he was Azriel’s mate and Azriel was your mate. Didn’t that mean you were also his mate?
no.
She might be yours.
Impossible. Right?

Cult of the Bat
Story Start-Batman isn’t just beaten, he’s been publicly humiliated. Solomon Grundy, Poison Ivy (with supersized virtually indestructible Venus Mantraps aiding her), and a new villain who calls himself Prometheus (and dresses similar-ish to the original) blitz Wayne manor right after Bruce disowns the bat family for unknown reasons. He’s beaten to a bloody pulp, at which point Grundy is “switched off” by another new villain, The Answer. The Answer then broadcasts to the world Batman’s defeat, true identity, and list of crimes. Embezzlement, tax fraud, Child Soldierization, stealing tax payer’s dollars as well as their personal information, corruption and sedition (keeping the cops, politicians, etc. in his pocket), accessory to a multitude of murders, withholding key evidence from the appropriate authorities, oh yea! the child endangerment and abuse thing, radicalizing people with potentially self/publicly destructive extremist ideals, being OBJECTIVELY a terrorist, nearly CREATING Armageddon-level catastrophes himself…
“…and the list, it doth go oooon aand oooooon, mah friends.” The Answer chuckled sarcastically.
Detailed evidence of these crimes is spread across the internet. Despite A.R.G.U.S.’s best efforts, they are unable to contain the very public information leak (much of the evidence also incriminates them 😑).
Dick Grayson is the first to return and rushes headlong into the fray. Finds Bruce’s still living body unmonitored and descends into the Bat Cave. There he finds The Answer waiting in Bruce’s chair. When Nightwing attacks, he’s stopped by the new Prometheus, who is a physical and tactical match for him (and roughly the same age). As they fight, The Answer reveals that they did all this simply to force Mr. Grayson to evolve. Essentially, The Answer is about to start testing both heroes and villains alike, “ya know, trials by fire and whatnot”. Those who survive would prove they were ready to evolve and face the horrifying future of earth.
“And those who don’t*cough*well, ya know….” The Answer smirked widely.
Nightwing is flung into a rage and nearly kills new Prometheus, but is incapacitated by an unknown source. The Answer then slings that red jacket over their shoulder and puts that annoying fedora on. Lights Cigar using Nightwing’s taser baton and bids Dick adieu.
Mr. Grayson is then FORCED to don the mantle of the Bat and must solve the mystery of who The Answer is before he rips the superpowered community of earth to shreds whilst simultaneously daring Darkseid to take advantage of the opening.
List of Suspects:
The Question- OG is currently busy being MIA. Although he has been replaced by nearly 1000 Questions spread across the globe who don’t seem to have memory of who they are or why they’re compelled to find and fight crime. Good luck gettin answers outa that lot.
Prometheus- Nightwing quickly discovers that old Prometheus had recently committed suicide. Based on the slovenly way he was living, it seems unlikely that he could have been The Answer, even if he was involved in the growing plot somehow.
Vandal Savage- It is revealed that one of Savage’s many progeny recently found him, chopped his body into seven pieces, placed them in rockets and launched them into space. Seems unlikely it was him. Not ruled out, though. The Child of Savage is nowhere to be found.
Ra’s Al Ghul- Talia finds Nightwing first and just tells him flat out that her father was murdered by The Answer. Shot through the heart with a Walter PPK. When they attempted to resurrect him via the Lazarus Pit, it triggered a flesh eating virus fueled by the life-replenishing effects of the pit itself. No one can even retrieve his corpse, as simply stepping into the pit is enough to instantly kill you. So yea, she wants revenge.
Amanda Waller- Is currently under investigation by the combined and legally empowered CIA/FBI. They’ve had her locked up in a top secret facility since long before Bruce’s demise. The Answer undoubtedly has high ranking allies planted within the U.S. government.
Lex Luthor- In a catatonic state that seems to have been induced by overexposure to kryptonite. According to J’onn J’onzz, he did seem to know about The Answer, but his mind is currently too fragmented to retrieve any more information than that.
Mr. Grayson must become The Batman in a world that has quickly grown to despise him, where even members of the Bat Family prove to be more enemy than ally.
Tim Drake- Takes it the hardest and makes by far the most absurd choice due to an increasingly worrisome mental state. Willingly marries Talia Al Ghul’s scar-covered and bloodthirsty granddaughter, Anastasia Al Ghul, and takes Ra’s place as head of the League of Assassins. Devotes the resources of the League to hunting down The Answer and eliminating them. Is assisted by Raven for unknown reasons.
Jason Todd- Ironically, remains the most stable amidst the chaos. Chooses to retain his Red Hood persona while trying his best to support Dick during his “trial”. Perhaps…he gets a liiittle more violent in his methods. Slade is forced offworld for a variety of offenses (mainly that he’s bad at his job and way too destructive in his methods, so the criminal underworld wants him gone), but he leaves the Deathstroke Estate split between Jason and his daughter. His version of a funny joke/meet cute. So Jason be rich as hell and has access to all of Slade’s contacts in all the criminal circles that matter. Rose is fine with this cuz she hated her old man and everything that reminds her of him anyways, so the two of them go on a buddy cop quest to track The Answer down. Maybe a few Teen Titan’s alumni join the squad along the way. Along with a veritable army of Questions.
Damian Wayne- sinks into depression. Leaves Gotham without warning and without objective. Wanders the world, seeking purpose. Finds that he doesn’t really care what happens now that Bruce is gone. Eventually, he comes across Catwoman in his travels and they bond over their shared edginess. Soooo the Batchild goes on a series of misadventures with his surrogate mother. And Harley Quinn is there. Because you can’t stop her from being there. And she brings hell and clowns with her.
Harley Quinn- Desperately searching for Ivy. Her poisonous love vanished after the night she helped pulp Bats. Depending on what she discovers, she might have to murder The Answer herself. Stumbles across pretty much everyone in their separate journeys, but they’re all too busy to help. Except for the Batchild and Catwoman.
Katherine Kane- Is framed for the Joker’s murder by new Prometheus, Countess Vertigone and The Savageborn. Recovering from a brutal duel with The Savageborn, an unparalleled sword master, she seeks revenge against the mastermind of her demise, Prometheus. In so doing, she stumbles into the maddening world of freewheeling, psychotic supervillains. It is there she meets legendary assassin Shiva and they stumble upon a much larger villainous conspiracy than they had anticipated. And some Questions are there, too.
Dick Grayson must become master and commander of this Army of Bats if he is to survive The Answer’s relentless onslaught and the coming Future.
Grayson’s new costume would be a combination of the Nightwing suit and the traditional Batman suit, keeping his iconic blue symbol whilst gaining the bat cape & cowl. His identity is known by pretty much everyone, so they all refer to him by name and Nightwing throughout. Villains come to fear him more than Bruce, though, because he’s completely unfazed by this. Where Bruce would’ve grown obviously angry, Grayson just laughs in their faces. The point is that he’s the opposite in every way. Like if Batman was played by Han Solo. Much more audacity, more of a gambler, with a smirking confidence that throws his enemies off their game and gives him the upper hand. He doesn’t hesitate to utilize all the allies who will dare to help him, even adding supervillains to the Bat Family if that’s what it takes. Where Bruce was rigid and unchanging in his Ideals, Dick is fluid, adaptable and much MUCH more empathetic to the plights of even those he fights. His ability to get inside The Answers (and the Bat Family’s) mind(s) proves to be his ultimate asset. The focus would be on his inventiveness and ability to think outside the box.
The Answer’s mannerisms and speech patterns are based ENTIRELY on Peter Falk as Columbo (the grandpa from princess bride).
He always looks and acts comically confused by what’s going on around him. His bright red three-piece suit is always rumpled and his tie loose. Fedora looks like it’s been sat on multiple times and he’s always smokin a stogey. His face has a similar mask to that of The Question or Rorschach, but it seems to be made from some sort of liquid that clings to his head.
The liquid will peel back and reveal his heavily scarred mouth whenever he talks or smokes, which makes him look like a gloopy version of the Pale Man from Pan’s Labyrinth.
Not the nostrils, just the mouth portion. The liquid mask would move aside, but strands of it would remain connected in front of his mouth. It closes immediately when his mouth stops moving. The juxtaposition between his bumbling, lighthearted way of addressing the situation and his somewhat horrifying appearance is intentionally off putting (to most). He acts as if he is just a simple-minded, regular Joe-shmoe P.I. Who’s accidentally solving this “big case”. He’ll then shift suddenly to a version of his persona that’s much closer to Batman than anything else, brutally and sarcastically revealing that there was never any chance for you to beat him. Physically, he can punch on with the bat family, but is closer in martial arts skill to a Green Arrow. Good but not great. His list of gadgetry, however, is enormous. He has stolen and repurposed tech from any number of superheroes/villains and can use it all very effectively. He is purposefully annoying, goading his enemies into attacking, which generally bears some manner of horrific consequence. The assumption that Grayson quickly comes to is, “if he shows up on scene, don’t attack cuz he definitely has the exact tool he needs to beat you or has brought someone who has that tool with him.”
Examples:
Anti-Flash Field- The Answer always has on his person a device that rejects the Speedforce, repelling it away from the device. The closer any speedster gets, the slower they get. If they run directly at the Answer at full speed, they’ll smack into the repulsive field and blast their own body to pieces.
An assortment of stolen Lexcorp kryptonite weapons- he’s got one or two at all times, including a Kryptoscanner. It automatically detects Kryptonians’ unique energy signature about 1.75 miles out. The A.I. within can react at the same speed as Superman’s well recorded average flight speed, firing off a dampening pulse which will greatly weaken them. Not fully de-powered, but enough that armor piercing rounds will actually hurt them. Eventually, Prometheus just tricks all earth kryptonians into returning to earth’s surface to catch The Answer, only then activating a series of satellites that filter the light of the sun to have the same effect as a red sun on them. They’re trapped on a hostile earth, powerless.
Perfect Refrigeration Unit- based on Captain Cold’s ray gun, this Fanny pack-like device absorbs all excessive heat that gets too close to The Answer’s bod and repurposes it to charge his various electronic devices.
Starr-o-Launcher- wrist mounted, gas powered grenade launcher. Technically, The Answer uses it to fire a bunch of different grenades he makes, but it’s most useful round is the synthetic clones of Starro’s spawn that he whipped up in a lab. Even if they don’t hit your face, they’ll be able to gain partial control over your body.
Dr. Fate in a Bottle- Uno reverse card for Magic.
The Blue Rose- A genetically engineered telepathic rose that releases a constant command to not attack The Answer. This will play upon the way a person thinks, so if they are fearless, they just won’t feel like he’s worth attacking. This combined with the unaggressive, laughable way he acts makes people constantly underestimate him, a running theme. It also disrupts telepathic attacks and prevents the manipulation of flora or fauna anywhere near The Answer.
And so on and so forth….I’m tired for now.

What about lich!tony stark?
I've never heard of a more perfect monster for Tony Stark. Just for context to people who don't know what a lich is according to Wikipedia...
Often such a creature is the result of a wilful transformation, as a powerful wizard skilled in necromancy who seeks eternal life uses rare substances in a magical ritual to become undead. Unlike zombies, which are often depicted as mindless, a lich is sapient, retaining their previous intelligence and magical abilities. Liches are often depicted as holding power over lesser undead soldiers and servants.
Tumblr media
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
Warnings: necromancy, fantasy/royal style au, I don't even really know what this beyond a bit creepy, bones/skeletons
Were you saving your kingdom or were you selfishly throwing yourself into the jaws of Death himself to escape the impending terror of an attack? You were newly crowned, with minimal battle experience. Your family hiding you away from the horrors of the real world, only to succumb to them, leaving you to rule a nation you felt you had no right to.
The question flitted through your mind again as you walked through the barren halls of the deserted castle remains. Rusted hunks of armor that once shined bright and gold were scattered around the stone floor. The stories told of legions of red and gold knights, but all you saw were shells of their former glory.
At the throne of it all, sat the Merchant of Death, the Iron Man, the Prodigal Son, Anthony Stark. No one knew how he learned to evade death so, but the blue glow from his armor was all the proof you needed to know he was still alive, or as alive as he could be. No one had seen him outside of his armor in decades, centuries maybe even. But he was your last hope to protect your people, yourself.
“My Lord,” you bowed your head to him, trying to quell any lingering fear and curiosity. “I’ve come before you to beg for your assistance and-”
“Look, Princess, I’m going to stop you right there,” the voice echoed out of the armor, deep and rich. “You wish to make a deal with me, you want my army, you have to barter. I am not called the Merchant of Death without cause.”
Your head snapped up at the sound of armor moving, the metal chinking into new places for the first time in years maybe. He moved with ease, unbothered by hallow sounds he created with each step.
“I have nothing to trade, I am here alone.”
“Well, that’s not completely true though is it, Princess? You’ve got a dress,” he stepped around you, circling you, toying with you.
“What would you need an old dress for?”
“Oh nothing, I’d just prefer you wore nothing at all.”
Heat erupted in your face. How dare he speak so commonly to you? You whipped around to look at the man, determination and unfounded bravery settling in your gut.
“What sacrifice do you require then, Merchant? Blood? A life? Those are all I have to offer. If they are of no interest to you, then I will go to die with the rest of my people.”
“You seem to be misunderstanding something here. There is no leaving.”
As his words reverberated around the hall, the hairs at the back of your neck stood up. It wasn’t the blatant threat from the shell in front of you that caused it, it was the sudden feeling of being watched, that there were 1000s of eyes piercing through you. Your eyes darted around the cavern, the broken pieces of armor animating, moving of their own accord to form knights of the undead, hallow suits to do their master’s bidding.
“You have my legions, Princess, but the cost of their services will be your life. Do you accept?”
Stark stopped in front of you, waiting for your answer. This would relieve you of your royal duties, free of the life of stress and fear that never should have been yours to begin with. You gulp, swallowing the pinch of fear that was trying to gather in your eyes. You look into the glowing hallow eyes and nod.
The suit shifted, cracked open around the patches of rust, and revealed what was left of the great Merchant of Death. A skeletal hand brushed over your cheek. Glowing blue eyes sockets are fixed on your features, watching and waiting for your reaction to his real form. In the center of his rib cage is the source of light, a blue crystal embedded into his sternum. You release shuddering breath, reaching out to where his heart would have been at some point.
“My life is yours, Necromancer.”

IIDA DUDE MY GOD. MY RELIGION. MY SAVIOR. ok. Okok so. You said fluff and I delivered. But like-I mayyyyybe sprinkled in some angst. No worries. Fluff ending guaranteed. Also you know I enjoyed writing something when I broke my 1000 words rule. Like sheesh this is 3000 pLUS WORDS-
Also if iidareaders reblogs I’ll eat my shirt in joy
——————
Iida x reader - Selfish Promise
⚠️warnings - delinquent reader? Selfish-y Iida? Idk. None lmao
Pronouns - male, he/him
Tumblr media
——————
(Y/n) wasn’t going to lie. Iida really got on his nerves. He’s always up his ass about sagging his pants down low, or running in the hallways. It’s not like it was his business. He was in class 1-B, for god sakes.
Everyone in 1-A knew him as that “1-B boy” who always liked fucking with Iida. And he did, it was fun to see him get all pissy and red when he unbuttoned his dress shirt to the point you could easily flash him if you tugged hard enough. Iida was pretty, but even more pretty when he’s flustered. He wasn’t going to deny the fluttery feeling in his chest when he sees an opportunity to interact with Iida.
Which is how (y/n) found himself smoking outside the UA dorms, sitting outside on the steps and staring up at the sky. He didn’t smoke much, only when he really needed to destress, but something felt compelling to just pull one out today.
He already heard the engine boosted footsteps hurling his way, a smile growing on his lips. Once the blue haired boy was in sight however, he wiped it off and replaced it with a neutral expression.
“You shouldn’t be smoking on school property, (L/n)-kun!”
“Mm? And you shouldn’t be on 1-Bs dorms. Wait til Vlad or Monoma finds out.”
Iida stumbled back, biting back the scowl forming on his face. He took the cigarette out from (y/n’s) fingers, and stomped on it. (Y/n) clicked his tongue as Iida hiked his glasses up his nose further.
“Stop acting like such a ruffian!”
“Then go on a date with me.”
Iida choked on his own spit. He knew that (y/n) joked around a lot, but this was just excessive.
“(L-L/n), you shouldn’t joke about such intimate matters like that with someone you barely kn-“
“I’m not joking.” (Y/n) stood up from his step, and stood infront of the taller boy. “I’m dead serious.”
Iida opened his mouth, then closed it. “(L/n) it is highly inappropriate for two students, let alone boys, to go on a romantic outing! This is a place for learning!”
“How bout we make a promise then? A deal if you must.” (Y/n) seemed completely calm, but inside he was sweating like a clam. He had said it on impulse, and there was no going back. Either sell it till he declines or hell, he has a date.
“If you be my boyfriend and go out with me for one full day, I’ll stop acting like a ‘ruffian’ or something. I’ll follow the rules and whatnot.”
“B-boyf...” Iidas words got caught in his mouth. “W-WHY?”
“I’m not going to try anything...! It’s..it’s just for my own...reasons...! If...that makes sense...”
Iida ran a hand through his hair. Did (L/n), a delinquent, like-like him? A proper former man from the Iida family? He wasn’t romantically attracted to the shorter boy at all, but this was a good chance! He could finally be set on the right path if he agreed to be his significant other for one day! Easy enough!
Iida pushed up his glasses once more. “Fine. I will do it. But afterwards you better keep your end of the bargain.”
(Y/n) held the tiniest smile and extended his pinky. Iida looked at him confused, before hesitantly interlocking their fingers and shaking it.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
“Gimme your number. I’ll text you the info later.” They exchanged phone numbers, and Iida bid him goodbye.
(Y/n) felt like he was on top of the world.
—————
“Oi Iida! Over here!” (Y/n) waved his arms around frantically, trying to get the boys attention. Iida spotted him, and made a beeline towards him. He gave a smile and bowed slightly.
“Good morning, (L/n)-kun.”
“Morning! Haha, I’m glad you came! I didn’t think you’d actually show...and you’re on time aswell! As expected of uptight iida.”
(Y/n) was in a pink, slightly oversized hoodie and black sweatpants. Iida was expecting him to be in full black, ripped clothing with skulls on it. He wasn’t expecting him to look so...soft? If you looked at him, you wouldn’t think he was the same person smoking on the steps of a prestigious school.
“Oh well, what time did you get here?”
Iida deadpanned. Even he wasn’t that extra. “Why...”
(Y/n) rubbed the back of his neck shyly and chuckled. “I was so happy I couldn’t wait, ahaha!”
(Y/n’s) probably smiled more times today then the whole time he’s been enrolled into UA. It was an odd sight, but Iida felt a sort of proudness that he was probably the only one who got to see this side of him. He glanced at his face one more time, this time, looking at his red eyes and cheeks.
“...are your eyes swollen..?”
“Oh I...I couldn’t sleep...”
(Y/n) awkwardly chuckled for the 100th time that morning. Iida was about to go on a tangent about how sleep is important to you, but (y/n) suddenly grabbed his wrist, and pulled him forwards. He was practically dragging the poor boy.
“Is there anything specific you wanna do, Iida?” (Y/n) mused, looking around the plaza.
Iida shrugged.
“No, not really. Today’s more of your day, so I’m fine with anything.”
A bright red painted itself onto (y/n’s) cheeks, as he turned back around to hide it. It was usually iida getting all red and flustered, (y/n) wasn’t used to it. Still, it felt kinda nice.
“Awesome dude!”
(Y/n) went on rambling about places they could go to or eat at, but Iidas ears drowned out the noice as he looked at his smiling face. He didn’t know someone so...rude, could look so sweet. (Y/n) tugged at Iidas shoulder.
“...though I suppose, we could just go to a field and train, right?”
—————
(Y/n) got back up to his feet for the 5th time, and charged at Iida. He knew he couldn’t beat him with speed, so he’d have to rely on his quirk as much as he could. They were sparring in a little patch of grass near a small clearing, with a big tree providing the two boys shade. Iida swerved out of the way, making the smaller boy tumble onto the ground face first.
“Ah! (Y/n)! Are you okay?”
Iida rushed to the boys side and tangled his fingers in his hair. “It’s a little swollen but it’s not bleedi...(L/n)-kun...?”
(Y/n) hid his blush with the back of his hands and tensed up. “You..called me...(y/n)...dude..”
It was Iidas turn to tense up. His glasses fogged up as he swung his arms around madly. “IM TERRIBLY SORRY! IT WAS AN ACCIDENT, I SWEAR! IJUSTGOTWORRIEDANDSAIDITONACCIDEN-“
“Dude it’s fine! I-I dont mind..!” (Y/n) jabbed him lightly on the chest.
“L-let me treat you to some food! As apology for your head I mean!” Iida stood up, pulling (y/n) to his feet aswell.
—————
(Y/n) was rambling on nervously again, with chopsticks resting nimbly between his fingers. Iida couldn’t help but gaze at his face. His eyes were softer than he expected, softer than the mockingly hardened eyes he pointed like a sword towards people at UA. His gentle clad smile could raise the heavens, with one crinkle near his left eye and a dimple dangerously close to the corner of his mouth. He had unusually long eyelashes for a guy, but it made him look even more pretty for a bad boy.
“Why are you a delinquent at school when you’re such a sweet and funny person?” The words dripped out of Iidas mouth unconsciously, quickly covering his mouth too late.
(Y/n) flushed bright red, squeezing his chopsticks a little too tightly. “W-well...I don’t know. It’s not like I’m doing it on purpose. People just think I am because i don’t like socializing with everyone I meet? Like-id rather hang out with someone I know and like than go out of my my way to befriend all of class B, y’know? Does that make sense? Ahaha sorry I’m rambling again. I don’t get to talk much with my few friends. And they’ve pretty much heard everything I have to say so it’s refreshingtotalktoa-“
Iida cut him off before he talked his tongue off. “If you don’t talk to people you don’t know well, then why are you talking to me so openly?”
“Because I like you.”
(Y/n) said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world. He wasn’t tripping over his words, or laughing nervously. He looked at Iida and said it like saying “the sky is blue” with so much certainty, it made a knot tighten in iidas throat.
Iidas question was, why though? Why did his heart thump along the buttery smooth rhythm of (y/n’s) voice? Why did his head reel every time he saw (y/n’s) eyes light up talking about something he found interesting? Why was he at such a loss for words when his gaze fell on him so attentively?
Iida cleared his throat. Maybe he was just excited to have a new friend. He didn’t see him in a romantic light! How could he? He’s just worked up on the fact that this hardass delinquent boy wasn’t who he thought he was.
“Shall we go, then?”
————
The date went by like a dream. Technically it wasn’t over yet, as the promise was for a full “day”, but window shopping and dicking around while Iida chops aggressively really tires you out. They both ended the day by sparring at the same clearing, before taking refuge on a bus stop bench. The sun was completely gone. Leaving behind the pasty purple and blue sky, washing over and killing the clouds.
“Ahhh, time flies by so fast! Damn, well, the days still not yet over soooo.”
“Yes, yes I know.” Iida chuckled. He thought he was going to have to bear through this day, but it was actually quite splendid. He definitely feels like he’s made a new friend.
“Well, is there anything you wish to do before the day is over?”
“Yeah um, so,” (y/n) cast his eyes down, fiddling with his fingers. “C-can we hold hands..?”
Iida wordlessly set his hand on top of (y/n’s) smaller one, waiting as he interlocked their fingers together. His hand was warm, way warmer than (y/n) was expected. He didn’t know, Iida seemed like a cold hands guy.
They sat quietly under the ambient streetlight, occasionally rubbing a thumb over the others hand, feeling it’s warmth and staring off into the distance. Iida didn’t notice his eyes drooping lower and lower until they were finally closed.
Iida let his thoughts roam. It was something he did when he was going to bed, or simply just resting his eyes for a bit. He thought of his family, what he would do for class on Monday, and finally, (y/n). It was the most prominent thing on his mind, and not because he was unconsciously resting his head on his shoulder, softly but firmly gripping the warm hand underneath his own.
The idea of (y/n) so soft and vulnerable in front of anyone else didn’t sit right with him. He wanted that sweet, kind side all to himself. It was selfish, and even wrong if he thought about it. (Y/n) was so sweet and respectable during this “date” of theirs. Perfect manners for when inside the classroom. If anything, he should be more than glad to have the world share this side of him.
So why was he feeling this way?
He felt a shoulder nudge from under his head, before a hand started vigorously poking at his cheek. He initially ignored it, but once he registered the current situation he jerked up and
“Iida. Iida wake up. It’s 11:40. We should be heading back before midnight. A-at least I want to so we can um...we can still technically legally hold hands by promise-“
Iida rubbed at his eyes in embarrassment. “My sincerest apologies for falling asleep! It was not my intention-“
”oh no it’s all good! I-I kinda fell asleep too. It’s been like...2 hours.”
Iida checked his watch. (Y/n) was right. 11:45 pm. He knocked his glasses up higher on the bridge of his nose and stood up. He extended a hand to (y/n) who tiredly accepted it and pulled himself off the bench.
They spedwalked towards the train station to catch a train back to UA, when (y/n) tugged on his sleeve, halting temporarily.
“Iida.”
Iida turned around with a hum. (Y/n) kept his eyes fixated on the ground, but held on to the sleeve of Iidas jacket like a lifeline.
“Today...is almost over.”
“Yes, um, it’s about 11:57 so we should hurry back-“
“Before the day officially ends,...can you kiss me?”
Iida focused on (y/n’s) downcast face. It wasn’t an expression of nervousness or any sort of flustered emotion. Instead it held a look of unreadable shame.
“If you do, then I would have no regrets. My feelings for you will also end here. I’ll try my best to end it. My feelings grow stronger for you everyday when we bicker or when I simply just see you, so I want to end this with a grand fina-“
“I refuse.”
(Y/n) looked up. Iida glasses glared white, preventing him from seeing his cerulean eyes. But he got his answer from the frown Iida was sporting on his face. Even he could agree, it was a silly request, but he couldn’t help by feeling just a tad bit hurt by how quickly he was shut down.
“I understand.”
(Y/n) averted his eyes, flushing with embarrassment. He scanned the area for something other than Iida to look at, before his eyes landed on the parks clock.
12 am.
Midnight.
The date was officially over.
(Y/n) was quick to let go of the sleeve he’d been clutching for a while now. “A-ah! The day has ended. The dates over.”
He stepped back and ducked his head into a 90 degree bow. “Thank you so so much for coming with me today.”
“I’m really happy.”
His expression betrayed his words. If there was one word to describe it, Iida would say it looked dead. Hollow, even. It looked hollow, like the sinking feeling harboring itself in his chest. He knocked against his ribcage multiple times to shake the achy feeling in his chest, but it never went away.
“Well, let’s head back now. It’s late.”
(Y/n) silently walked past Iida. It wasn’t until seeing his watery face drenched in silent hot tears walk by that Iida realized,
He was in love with (L/n) (Y/n).
He was in love with the sweet delinquent boy who smokes and sits on desks, but also has the most hypnotizing laugh. He was in love with the boy who wore saggy pants to school, but also wore an oversized pink hoodie that made Iida reluctantly imagine him wearing one of his own jackets. Oh, how cute he would look.
He was hopelessly, graciously, entirely in love with (L/n) (Y/n).
Iida ran up to (y/n), who had walked past him and kept going with the assumption that he was behind him. His breath crystallized in the form of fog when he ran, faster than he ever did without using his engines. There wasn’t enough time to hike the fabric of his pants up, and he’d rather not burn them to a crisp with the steam from his engine.
“(L-L/n)!”
He wasn’t sure if he heard him. He was still a great length away.
“(L/n)!”
He was closer now. Close enough for him to hear. He was either lost in his thoughts or outright ignoring him.
“(Y/N)!”
The boy whipped his head around so fast, his tears flung into the cold air and landed beside him on the ground. Iida didn’t think far ahead as to brace for landing, choosing instead to glomp (y/n) into a soul crushing hug. Though, it was more of a tackle with the the way they both tumbled over and hit the ground with a thud.
(Y/n) was able to soften the blow with his quirk, but the impact of Iida landing on his chest still knocked the wind out of him. He was waiting for Iida to start swinging his hands and start apologizing profusely, but instead got pulled up to his knees and encased in a more gentle hug.
He was buried in the crook of Iida neck, who in return nuzzled himself into (y/n’s) hair. They stood, or rather kneeled, in a stiff silence, rocking back and forth ever so gently.
“Sorry.”
“Wah! Don’t apologize! You did nothing wrong, you had the full right to deny my request-“
“No, not for that.” Iida untangled himself from the warmth of (y/n’s) body to look at him seriously. “I’m sorry for breaking our promise. Our deal.”
(Y/n) wiped his stray tears away, all bitterness turning itself into lighthearted confusion. “But you didnt-“
(Y/n’s) words fizzled out in his throat when a pair of lips shut him up. His eyes fluttered closed as he wrapped his arms shakily around Iidas neck, drawing him closer than he already his. After what seemed like forever, Iida suddenly jumped back with fogged up glasses and heavy blush on his face.
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I wasn’t thinking! Forgive me!”
“You know, all you’ve done was apologize all day. Is this what you normally do in class?”
“NO!” Iida fell back on his ass, a yelp escaping from his throat. (Y/n) chuckled ironically, pushing himself up to his feet and extending a hand towards the blue haired boy.
“I still don’t see how you broke our deal.”
Iida dusted himself off and adjusted his glasses. “Well-listen I-“ For once in his life, he was at a loss for words.
“I...want to e-extent it. O-Our date, I mean.”
Iida stood rigid as a board as (y/n) blinked.
“Wait-so like, you’ll go out with me tomorrow?”
“Yeah.”
“And the day after that.”
“Yes I suppose so.”
“A-and how bout a week from now-“
Iida grabbed (y/n’s) shoulders and shook him roughly. And by rough, I mean rough. This boy has enough beef to throw (y/n) into the sun.
“I-I WANT TO GO OUT WITH YOU FOREVER! I WANT YOU TO BE MY BOYFRIEND! I...I WANT TO BE YOUR BOYFRIEND! I WANT YOUR KINDNESS AND SWEETNESS ALL TO MYSELF! SO BE IT YOU’RE UNINTENTIONALLY A NEGLIGENT BOY AT SCHOOL! I WANT THIS SPECIAL SIDE OF YOU RESERVED FOR MYSELF! IVE NEVER BEEN SELFISH IN MY WHOLE LIFE SO SURELY THIS IS FINE! I WANT TO BE SELFISH! I WANT TO HOLD YOU IN MY ARMS MORE! I WANT TO GO ON SOME MORE DATES WITH YOU! (Y/N)-KUN I LOVE YOU!”
Iida has never considered himself selfish. He wasn’t the type to want something all to himself. If his friends wanted to be friends with someone he disapproved of, so be it. If he bought food but a fellow classmate was starving, he’d be eating only half as his classmate would be happily munching on their portion. If it was reasonable, he’d be willing to give up anything. It was the right thing to do.
Surely all of those good deeds would permit him to be selfish just this once. He’d never known the feeling of wanting something so bad to the point you felt like you were boiling. Of wanting no one else to have someone look at them the same way they looked at him. And how utterly satisfying it felt to have someone to claim as your own. Just this once couldn’t hurt anyone.
And by god, the impossibly wide smile (y/n) held was one thousand percent worth it.
————
“Halt! No running in the hallways, (L/n)-Kun!”
(Y/n) slowed down to a stop and sighed. “Dude, get off my dick.”
“Still pestering (L/n) huh? As expected of Iida!” Mina and Uraraka giggled, as they both disappeared inside the 1-A classroom. The hallway was empty now, making both Iida and (y/n) relax. (Y/n’s) pissed off expression softened, a smile now growing on his face. Iida swears it’s like talking to two different people. It’s kind of scary.
“Good morning, Tenya-Chan~”
“Uh-uh. Don’t ‘Tenya-Chan’ me. You know the rules. You owe me a kiss for breaking a rule. Gimme.”
Iida made grabby hands at (y/n), puckering his lips jokingly. God, he didn’t want to admit it but (y/n’s) sense of humor was rubbing off on him.
(Y/n) snorted at his boyfriends antics, pressing a gentle kiss onto his mouth. “Well-I gotta go, bye bye, Tenya! See you later. Call me, you sexy lamppost.”
(Y/n) timpered off to his classroom, his bad boy attitude returning once he stepped inside. Iida stood there, in utter confusion, before turning around and walking inside his own class.
“Ne ne, Iida, I’ve noticed you’re kinda like...less strict with that 1-B baddie. What’s up?”
Mina followed behind Iida with a curious, shit eating smile on her face.
“Ah. We...became good friends. He’s not as bad as I thought, I suppose.”
Mina looked at Iida unconvinced.
“You know, I saw you and bad boy kissing out there. My god. Iida. You gay liar.”
Iida, along with probably everyone else in class 1-A, collectively choked on air.

Title: Going Once, Going Twice…….
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Warnings: None that I can see, but please let me know if there are and I will add them.
This is for @amythedvdhoarder. Happy Hoelentine’s Day!!! I hope you like it. Its based off a picture I found of Seb and Hemsworth. I used my magic brain waves to turn them into Bucky and Thor and this is the result.
Mood board by the amazing @constantwriter85

As you stood backstage watching the other models get ready you found yourself wondering not for the first time why you were here. Surely there was someone who could have filled the spot left vacant when Maria got called away on an assignment. But no, they had come to you, said you had to, it was for the puppies and damn if you could ever resist helping puppies. Or the kitties, or any other animal. So that’s how you found yourself backstage getting stuffed into an evening gown that cost a small fortune getting your hair primped and your makeup caked on waiting to go on stage and walk down a runway, trip and fall more like it, to hopefully sell the high end clothes you wore to the highest bidder.
If that alone didn’t make you nervous there was the other part of the auction, the bidder got to take the model out on a date wearing said outfit. There was no way anyone was going to bid on you. You weren’t popular, not even an agent. You were the IT girl, you know the one no one pays attention too until something breaks.
“Hey y/n! You look amazing.” Nat said and she and Wanda joined you. “Don’t be nervous. You’re going to do fantastic.”
“Yes. This is going to be a great night. We’re going to save all the puppies!” Wanda was way too happy.
“Thats easy for you two to say. You have guaranteed bidders. No way are Bruce and Vision going to let you two go without bidding. I’m the one who’s gotta stand up there and hope for a pitty bid.” You said.
“I think you’re not giving yourself enough credit.” Wanda hugged you.
“Yeah, you never know, Mr. Right could be here tonight.” Nat agreed.
“Well lets hope he doesn’t get held up trying to find a parking space.” You joked. You made your way over the curtain and peaked out. There on the front row was the one person you never expected to see at a charity fashion show. Bucky Barnes sitting right next to Thor dressed like a million bucks. What the hell? Could this get any worse? It was bad enough to embarrass yourself in front of the other Avengers, but you at least taken comfort in knowing that the one Avenger you had a secret crush on, wouldn’t be there to witness your humiliation. But no, fate had other plans. There he was front and center sitting next to the fucking god of thunder who couldn’t hold a candle to Bucky in your book.
“Hey y/n.” The backstage coordinator announced. “You’re going to be the last one to walk okay?”
“Yeah sure.” You thought maybe that wouldn’t be so bad, maybe everyone would just leave after they bid and you wouldn’t have to even walk on. Walking over to the puppies and kitties that the rescue had brought to show off and hopefully get adopted you saw a white kitty that looked as nervous and out of place as you did. Bending over you picked it up and began to pet it.
“Well hey there little one, you look like you want to be here as much as I do.”
You saw Nat come back through the curtain and hand the puppy she took on stage over to a handler and you motioned for her. “How did you do?”
Taking her hands and smoothing them down her dress she shook her ass and replied. “A date with me cost the gentleman $5000.”
“Damn girl you go. Bruce is a lucky man.” You winked.
“Who said it was Banner?” She smiled.
“That smile.” You giggled. “Here comes Sharon. I’m guessing she took some of Cap’s social security check tonight.”
“Those age jokes never get old.” Nat laughed. “Hey Sharon, how much did grandpa spend?”
“$5000!” She yelled. “He got into a bidding war with some guy from the Pentagon. Apparently Steve doesn’t like to loose.” She chuckled.
“Great a bidding war.” You held the kitty tighter as you stroked its fur.
“Y/N! You’re up.” The handler bellowed.
“You go girl!” Nat said pushing you forward. Wanda high fived you and Sharron patted you on the shoulder.
You stood just to the left of the stage and waited for the MC to announce you.
“And now ladies and gentlemen, its time for our final model. Please welcome to the stage Ms. Y/F/N, Y/L/N!
The curtain parted and you took the first step, then another then you realized that with the lights in your eyes you couldn’t see anyone in the audience. This was perfect. You’d just pretend you were out for a walk holding a cat and everything would be fine. You had already during rehearsal counted the number of steps to the end of the runway. You’d walk down, stop, let them get a good look at the dress and the cat and turn around, walk back and not see a single face. Especially Bucky’s.
You counted the steps and reached the end. Stopping you made a point of petting the kitty and it nuzzled your face and tried to curl up closer to you, taking a pink tipped paw and placing it on your lips drawing an awe from the audience and a few chuckles. You took the moment to snuggle him some more and then hold him out for everyone to see. Finally you turned and walked back down the stage to the MC.
Once you reached him, you stopped and stood waiting for the torture to begin.
“Alright ladies and gentlemen, lets start the bidding shall we. Do I hear an opening bid?”
You braced yourself expecting to hear silence, when out of the crowd you heard a familiar voice yell, “$1000!” This was a dream. There was no way Bucky Barnes was bidding a $1000 to take you out.
“I have $1000, do I hear $2000?” The MC continued
“$2000!” Came a voice from the other side of the stage. Squinting you could just make out the smirk on Brock Rumlow’s face. Great. He had asked you out a couple of times and you had politely tuned him down. He gave you the creeps in a major way and you didn’t want within ten feet of him.
“I have $2000, do I hear $3000?”
“$3000.” Came Bucky’s reply.
“$4000.” Brock countered without even waiting on the MC.
“$5000.” Bucky returned.
“Well it looks like we have quite the bidding war here tonight ladies and gentlemen.” The MC was obviously unable to contain his excitement. “I have $5000, do I hear $6000?”
“$7000!” Brock yelled.
“The bidding stands at $7000, do I hear $8000?” The MC asked. You couldn’t believe this.
“$10,000!” Bucky yelled louder and you almost hit the floor. Holy shit, ten thousand dollars. That was going to go a long way to help the puppies and the kitties. In your arm your new fury friend must have sensed your nerves because he again started rubbing your face. Taking your hand and rubbing his ears, you waited.
“$10,000 ladies and gentlemen! This is indeed a record setting bid. Do I hear another bid?” He motioned to Brock, who took a moment before shaking his head no and you released the breath you didn’t realize you were holding. Relief that you wouldn’t have to endure a night with Brock Rumlow, only to relize that it meant you’d be enduring a night with Bucky Barnes. Even if it was a different kind of enduring.
The crowd went crazy as the grand total for the evening was announced and you made your way back stage, where Wanda, Sharon and Nat were all waiting for you.
“Oh my god girl!” Wanda exclaimed.
“And here you were worried about no one bidding.” Nat teased you.
“I’m so excited for you.” Sharon replied. “I swear to God though if Rumlow had won I would have insisted on a double date so that you didn’t have to be alone with him. That guy is major creep.”
“I was scared there for a while. But damn, how did that even happen? Why in the world would Bucky Barnes ever want to go out with me?” You shook your head at the thought, not noticing the girls looking over your shoulder as someone approached.
“Well doll, I can give you about ten thousand reasons if you really want to know.” You heard Bucky say from behind you.
Turning around you saw him standing there with the other Avengers as they came to collect the other ladies. As each couple paired off and made their way to the door you suddenly found yourself alone with Bucky. You still had the cat in your arms and he was sleeping contently.
“Hi Bucky.” You smile at him. “Thank you for not letting Rumlow win.”
“You’re welcome, but if you think that’s the only reason I did this, then I have some making up to do.” Bucky walked closer to you and used his flesh finger to stroke the cat on top of the head.
“Making up to do?” You asked.
“Yeah, I thought you knew that I wanted to ask you out.” He explained.
“Uh you did?”
“Yeah. I just never thought you’d go. So Thor talked me in to coming tonight and taking my chances. His thought was that if you had to go out with me, it would give me a chance to show you what a great guy I am, his words not mine, and that I could woo you.” Bucky chuckled at the last part.
“Woo me?” You giggled. “Well, I appreciate the effort to impress me, but you could have saved yourself some money and just asked me out the old fashioned way. I would have said yes.”
“Yeah?” He looks at you.
“Yeah.” You answer. “BUT now that you’ve told me about this mighty plan you and the god of thunder have cooked up, I’m wanting to see it play out.” You move to walk towards the handler to give the cat back. “Let me just give this little guy back and we can go.”
“No need.” Bucky tells you and you look at him. “I adopted him. He’s obviously a very smart fellow for picking you to cuddle up to. I only hope he can teach me his moves so that I can get some cuddles.” Bucky took him from your arms so you could find your coat and bag.
“Cuddles, Sargent Barnes come AFTER the proper wooing, not before.” You replied as you walked off.
“Well then let the wooing commence.” He said following after you.

Chapter 2: u guys r moding my night :(
There was chaos in the Wayne Manor. This was nothing unusual, of course, and today it even seemed to be surprisingly tame. But it was chaos nonetheless.
Timothy Drake-Wayne careened down the spiral staircase, catching himself with a well-timed front flip handspring, and skidded to a halt in the kitchen. Alfred briefly paused to look up from where he was preparing dough for a batch of homemade pasta, then offered the boy a smile and a greeting.
“Good evening, Master Drake. Dinner won’t be ready for another half-hour, I’m afraid.” Tim had opened his mouth to reply when a growl echoed from the nearby ballroom.
Jason Todd-Wayne sprinted into the kitchen brandishing a nerf gun. “There you are, replacement. You won’t get away with beating me this time.” He pulled back the reloader of the play-gun, making a threatening click ring through the kitchen.
“I’m afraid you are both late to the party,” Alfred calmly announced as he mixed ingredients together. “Miss Cain has been here for the past five minutes.”
Cass Cain-Wayne indeed poked her head out from where she had been perched beneath the bar. She gave her brothers a shit-eating grin and wiggled her fingers as way of a cheeky greeting.
Tim gave a groan as he and Jason begrudgingly handed some money over to their sister. “She cheats.” Cass stuck her tongue out at that. “Besides, racing you here was just an excuse to get my mind off waiting for midnight.”
“And because Alfred is the only one polite enough to actually listen to you rave about that stupid game,” Jason scoffed, sitting down at the bar to watch Alfred work.
“--thought I heard voices in the kitchen, oh there you are, little wing!” Dick Grayson-Wayne’s cheery voice came from the foyer, increasing in pitch as he spotted Jason and swept him up into a tight hug.
Barbara Gordon wheeled herself in not too long after, chuckling at the squirming Jason and delighted older brother.
Meanwhile Tim, who had taken offense to Jason’s insinuation, was reassuring Alfred that if he wanted the boys to leave him be he only ever had to ask. “It’s just that I’m so excited for the launch tonight, and you know B is too busy to hear about it.”
Jason had finally muscled his way out of Dick’s embrace as the latter’s attention focused on his youngest brother. “What launch are you talking about?” Dick asked, giving Cass a side hug.
“Oh, tonight is the release of this new VRMMORPG game called Mindscape!” Tim practically bounced as Dick came over to give him his hug too.
Dick gave Barbara a confused glance. “I know some of those words,” he nodded slowly. “So what’s got you so excited? Video games come out all the time.”
Tim rolled his eyes as he sat down beside Jason on the barstools. “Well yeah, but this game has groundbreaking virtual reality tech. Supposedly, the textures took five years and a team of almost 1000 artists.”
Jason put Tim into a headlock and said casually, “I’m surprised you haven’t heard replacement talking about this yet. He kinda won’t shut up about it.”
Cass nodded her head in solemn agreement while Tim struggled to get out of Jason’s grasp.
“Such are the woes of moving out.” Dick shrugged. “Sounds crash though, got room for one more?”
Tim finally shoved Jason off. “I actually bought enough passes that we can all play if you want,” he gave each of his siblings the biggest puppy-dog eyes he could manage.
Barbara snorted even as Dick pumped his fist in the air beside her. She wheeled herself up to the bar to pinch Jason, who was poised to jab his fingers into Tim’s sides. Jason yelped and glared at her as she said, “Sorry Timmy, I’d rather let someone else be the guinea pig for this new kind of tech. Besides, Dad will worry if I let myself get sucked into pouring too many hours into this.”
“Papa Gordon is a force to be reckoned with,” Dick attested earnestly. “Jay?” he prompted.
“Absolutely not,” Jason answered immediately. Tim was quick to protest. “But why? We could spend more time together! It’ll be good team-building.” Jason’s face soured at that.
Dick leaned in and stage-whispered, “Do I have to tell B to force you into family bonding? You know he’ll make you do it.”
Cass covered her silently laughing mouth with one hand as Jason threw his hands up in the air. “Fine, don’t get Bruce involved. I’ll play your stupid game,” he finally relented. Tim grinned at his win, then cast a hopeful look at Cass.
She pulled a face and signed No thank you. Better things to do than watch VR pornos.
Tim’s face blushed profusely as he opened his mouth to protest, but was cut off by Jason’s cackling. Even Alfred cracked a smile while he rolled the dough onto the ravioli press.
Once Jason quieted down, Tim crossed his arms and said, “Suit yourself. Looks like it’ll be no-girls-allowed anyway.”
“Guess we’d better tell Cassie that, Timbo,” Dick wiggled his eyebrows suggestively, which Tim elected to ignore.
“Speaking of suits,” Alfred said while seamlessly spreading filling in the ravioli and placing another sheet on top of the press, “aren’t you boys going to miss the premiere if it is indeed at midnight?”
Tim looked imploringly at the two girls. “You wouldn’t be willing to trade shifts for your favorite brother, would you?”
* * *
Wally West strolled out of the zeta tube and into the Justice League’s satellite, known to himself and the other heroes as The Watchtower. He was dressed in a casual NASA t-shirt and jeans, slurping a smoothie, and playing a game on his phone.
The sound of someone clearing their throat made him look up. He was greeted with the sight of his old team, Aqualad, Superboy, Miss Martian, Rocket, Zatanna, and Artemis, waiting impatiently. They were dressed in full hero attire-- he didn’t even realize Artemis still had her costume-- and looked to him expectantly.
“Hey guys, what’s poppin’?” Wally grinned and gave his friends a lazy chin jerk.
“‘What’s poppin’?’ Babe, are you serious? You told us to meet here ASAP for an emergency. So you can tell us what exactly is ‘poppin’.” Ah yes, his Spitfire. Artemis Crock still wasn’t afraid to give him a piece of her mind. But this time it looked like everyone else was on her side too, as they nodded in agreement with her emphatic air quotes.
“Oh, uh yeah, Mindscape is coming out tonight!” He set his smoothie down on the table. “I got us all passes and I’m super stoked for the launch. It’s got this super cool new VR tech that’s basically being released for the first time ever. I got the equipment through my internship, so we’re all set! You guys are totally coming right?” He made finger guns at his increasingly exasperated friends.
Artemis facepalmed. Kaldur’ahm raised his eyebrows in that I’m disappointed in you but I’m not going to say it way of his and said, “Wally, with you and Artemis retired from the life, understand that we took this to be a literal emergency and rushed to your aid. Do not abuse our good intentions.”
“Seriously West, I have a lot on my plate right now!” Rochelle Ervin was also, apparently, a little upset with him. “You could’ve said it was about a dumb game.”
The speedster tried to do damage control with some lighthearted humor. “Hey guys, stay whelmed. I get it, I probably should have given a few more deets about this very-much-not-dumb game, but do you know how many candy bars I had to eat to win these passes?”
“This is why you’ve been spending so much on junk food?” Oh, he was in big trouble with Artemis now. “You probably didn’t have to eat all of them, babe.”
M’gann M’orzz, Connor Kent, and Zatanna Zatara looked similarly annoyed. Well, the girls did. Connor just looked like his usual brand of annoyed, which was honestly a small victory.
“So...” Wally felt a little sheepish now, “who wants in?”
The rest of the group exchanged a look. Artemis was the first to speak up. “Well, you’ve already invested too much of our money in this to turn back now.” She walked up to him and poked a finger at his chest. “But you owe me so many dinners for this.”
He grinned triumphantly. “Deal!”
Rochelle spoke up next. “Me and my plate don’t need any more helpings, thank you very much. I’ll see y’all at the next team reunion!” She flew out through the zeta tube.
Kaldur clapped him on the shoulder. “If you need any assistance, I will be there. But for now I am running Atlantis in Aquaman’s stead while he is off-world, and I must return to my duties.” He then bid the rest of the team farewell and stepped through the zeta tube.
“Haha, he said ‘duties.’” Wally said once he’d left, then winced as Artemis smacked his arm lightly. Lightly for her. Rubbing his arm, he looked imploringly at his other friends.
M’gann and Conner looked deep in a telepathic conversation, which was just awkwardly intense eye contact for onlookers. Zatanna crossed her arms and sighed, “Fine, why not. I didn’t have plans for the weekend anyway. Lead the way to your chocolate factory, Charlie.”
Connor, having caught the tail end of the conversation, looked confused at the reference. He shrugged and said, “I’m in, could be fun.”
M’gann gave her friends an apologetic smile. “Sorry guys, my uncle needs help back on Mars. There’s tensions between the white and green martians again, and he really needs me there to get it under control.”
She gave Connor a peck on the cheek and left to board the nearby Bioship.
“And then there were four,” Wally said with a smile. “Now let’s go make you guys some avatars!”

Bart Allen could hardly contain his excitement. Scratch that, he couldn’t contain his excitement! “Bouncing off the walls” may be an exaggeration for most people, but he was not most people. Being the grandson of The Flash certainly had its perks, and being able to literally bounce off the walls was one of them.
The cause of his excitement, his friends Timothy Drake-Wayne and Wally West, had just called to ask if Bart wanted extra passes to the premiere of the biggest video game of the decade. And uh, yeah duh he wanted them! He already had one he’d bought for himself, but bringing four extra friends? So totally crash.
He opened up his phone and pulled up the group chat titled Badass Babes.
CrashBandicoot: hey bitchez n babez (u kno who u r), u ready 4 the best videogame of the yr to drop?!
BlueMenace: ese, do you HAVE to type like that?
WonderBabe: yea it’s super annoying
CrashBandicoot: gtta go fast babez
CrashBandicoot: now answer the question
GreenMenace: oh i heard about that! mindscape, right? isn’t it some vr game
CrashBandicoot: yes! nd i got extra tix, so come ovr to cave
GirlBoss: No can do, got research tomorrow!
MaleWife: you always have research bae. sorry little speedster, gotta drive the lady to work
CrashBandicoot: u guys r moding my night :(
BlueMenace: totally not a word but I’ve got you cariño, be there in an hour
WonderBabe: ah what the heck, I’ve got nothing better to do
GreenMenace: always down to whoop ur ass in video games
CrashBandicoot: u wish
CrashBandicoot: roy?
Ginger1 is typing...
WonderBabe: it’ll be fun! more ~mingling~ with kids our age
Ginger2: Hold on, give him some time
Ginger1 is typing...
BlueMenace: Roy, I can pick you up on my way in if you want
Ginger1 has stopped typing.
Ginger2: Um, he says he’ll meet you guys there
Ginger2: He may have destroyed his phone with his “non-typing” hand
GreenMenace: pog
WonderBabe: see u guys soon!
Bart pumped his fist, then ran at top speed to his boyfriend Jaime’s house, where it looked like he was doing homework. Seriously, on a Friday night? Bart had absolutely no qualms about whisking him into his arms and making for the nearest zeta tube.
“Woah Bart, I said I needed an hour!” Jaime protested.
Bart rolled his eyes. “Yeah, but you definitely don’t have anything due tonight, and we have to make your character online before the launch!”
Jaime just looked resigned as they sped into the zeta tube. He knew what he had signed up for.

For the handholding prompts! Taiora + 37? :3 Have a lovely day
Hello! Sorry for such a long wait, at first I was really confused by what I should write for Taiora with this prompt, and by the time I got around to outlining the scene, life happened 😔
But finally today I was able to sit down and get this out of my brain! This is set right after the battle with Ordinemon in Tri Part 6 and is mostly canon compliant. I hope you enjoy it, thank you for requesting 🧡
37. not realizing they’re holding hands till someone points it out
Taichi’s gut kept telling him that he was missing something, but he brushed it away. What could he be possibly missing when he was sitting with a wall of comfort surrounding him? That’s why even as the thought continued to gnaw at him, he refused to open his eyes and acknowledge the problem, it could be dealt with later, when his nap would be over and he would wake up feeling well rested and refreshed. For now he wanted to bask in the feeling of floating in sunshine, with every aching muscle in his body being cured of it’s pain, every tired fibre in his body being refuelled with energy. He wouldn’t dare open his eyes right now, not when he could hide under this umbrella of comfort for a little while longer, because who knew if it would still be there to shelter him from the stinging raindrops of reality when he woke, or if it would leave him drenched and broken, as it had once before.
NEXT STATION-
The words rang in his ears like a blaring alarm and suddenly Taichi was very much aware of where he was and what he was supposed to be doing. His eyes jolted open and he made to get up, when a familiar weight on his shoulder made him halt as realisation dawned fully upon him, of course the warmth had belonged to Sora who still slept quietly with her whole body leaning on him and her head resting on his shoulder, just like two puzzle pieces perfectly aligned.
The announcement echoed again throughout the train compartment and Taichi broke out of his daze, deciding that now was not the time to marvel over these little things, he quickly stood up. When he did so, Sora woke with a start, her eyes fluttering open in slow motion, but as they didn’t really have time for her to be fully awake, Taichi grabbed her hand in his and pulled her onto her feet, dragging her behind him as he rushed to get out of the train just as the doors slid shut.
He turned to face Sora and ask her if she was feeling okay but saw that her eyes were still drooping low and she held on to his grasp on her hand tightly for support as her feet wobbled out of balance. Taichi couldn’t really blame her, in fact he was relieved that he wasn’t the only one who felt like they had been made to run a marathon for 1000 years without a break. The visits to Digital World, the adventure and the battles had always been exhausting, but today their strength had been put to test in a way that none of them had ever expected to encounter, and the price of overcoming it all was pure exhaustion, both mentally and physically.
So Taichi kept quiet and gently pulled Sora along with himself across the mostly empty platform, glad that he had been the one to volunteer to take her home as he was so familiar with the route that he could probably reach there even with his eyes closed. He also didn’t mind the silence that had settled between them as they walked slowly but steadily, as Taichi wasn’t sure if he had anything left to say to anyone after the lengthy interrogation him and his friends had been subjected to by the authorities right after Ordinemon had been defeated, without so much as a moment spared for them to deal with the loss of their Digimon friend.
Even though Taichi’s session had lasted the longest as he was the only one to witness Nishijima’s demise he still felt that Sora had been subjected to a more difficult task, which was consoling not just Meiko, but also Hikari and Mimi as they had sat in the room waiting to be called in for questioning. As always, she had given every bit of her energy into taking care of others rather than herself, so Taichi attempted to make things easier for her the only way he knew how to, by keeping quiet and giving her the space to deal with everything at her own pace.
It was when they reached her home and rang the bell that Sora finally looked like she was awake, right on time Taichi thought, as at least he’d be able to tell her to take care of herself and have her actually retain those words in her head. So he turned slightly, hoping to bid her goodbye before her mother opened the door, but as tired as he was, he missed his chance to make a quick escape. The door swung open before he could open his mouth and a bright light was cast upon them and the dimly lit hallway.
Mrs. Takenouchi stood behind the door, looking like she had rushed to the door in a hurry that was uncommon for her, her face an odd mixture of relief and concern as she studied her daughter. Then her eyes travelled down and she raised them in mild surprise, another thing which was unusual for the stern Mrs. Takenouchi, so both Taichi and Sora followed her astonished gaze and experienced a rude awakening themselves as they saw that their hands were still tightly clasped around each other’s. They quickly pulled their hands away and shifted a few steps away from each other to put some distance between them.
Taichi was amazed by how despite of being so tired, his body could still find the energy to turn his face into a heated mess, and smoke coming out of his ears now wouldn't come as a shock to anyone.
“Good evening, Mrs. Takenouchi.” He mumbled awkwardly to fill the silence and draw attention away from the fact that he had been unknowingly holding onto Sora’s hand for who knows how long now. He could only hope that Sora too knew that it had been unintentional, and that he hadn’t meant to overstep his boundaries.
“Good evening, Taichi. I am relieved to see that you’re both okay, though you do look like you need a few days worth of rest.” She smiled softly at the two teens, turning to face her daughter with an affectionate gaze, she added, “Sora, welcome back.”
“I’m home.” Sora replied almost automatically, and satisfied with the response Mrs. Takenouchi passed a peculiar look to her daughter before she headed back inside, leaving the two of them alone to say their goodbyes.
Sora took this chance to move inside her house, now taking Mrs. Takenouchi’s place in the doorway, finally facing Taichi with her eyes wide open, though they were still filled with reflections of what had transpired in the past few days.
Taichi remembered that he had been meaning to tell her to take care of herself before her mother had arrived at the door, but when he looked at Sora now, with her figure illuminated by the white light coming from inside her house, her vermillion eyes shining with tears that were being kept at bay with every bit of remaining energy in her body, he lost the words he had so carefully selected a few moments ago. He wished instead that telling her how much he cared for her and her wellbeing could be as easy as taking her hand and pulling her to her feet. He knew he had to say something however, because not only had the silence between them become suddenly deafening, but also because he couldn’t possibly leave without a word of appreciation or gratefulness for all that she had done for Hikari and the rest of them today.
“Don’t forget to eat dinner,” He joked, hoping to lighten the mood enough to easily slip the words he wanted to say out of his mouth, but his half-grin seemed to light something in Sora as one lonely tear slipped down her cheek slowly despite her strained efforts to keep it from happening.
“Don’t ever disappear like that again, Taichi.” Her voice trembled as she spoke and Taichi felt a pang in his chest at her tone, “I don’t know what I would’ve done if you hadn’t come back. You can’t leave me behind just like that!”
“I’m sorry.” Taichi muttered quietly, that was all that he could manage to say out loud.
In reality he wanted to remind her that there were other people in her life who would easily be able to fill the gap he would leave, that it was not fair for her to stand there and tell him this, knowing well enough who he had meant to save in that moment. But he held his tongue, it had been a long few days for both of them and now was not the time to turn regrets of the past into bitter remarks that he may never be able to go back from.
“Please. Promise me, you will never do that again.” Her pleading voice was just above a whisper and it was a miracle that it even reached his ears.
“I will, if you promise something in return too.” Taichi replied in a determined tone, his hands balling up into fists on their own as he fixed her with an intense gaze. Sora looked at him with doubt at first, but eventually nodded at his words tiredly, “You have to promise to start putting yourself first from now on, no matter what.”
“That’s a difficult promise to make.”
“So is what you’re asking of me.” Taichi refused to back down.
“I’m asking you to take care of yourself, that isn’t too hard.”
“Likewise.”
And silence settled between them once again as Sora glared up at him and Taichi returned the favour with equal vigour. He had no idea how either of them still had the energy to keep this up, but even if it meant sacrificing being closer to his bed for a little while longer, he would gladly do so to get Sora to treat herself better. If he had learned anything from what they had all been through in the past few days, it was that change should always be embraced, for better or for worse. He didn’t know just how much Sora could change her ways or how it would affect her presence in all of the Digidestined’s lives, but he knew that if she didn’t start now then she wouldn’t start ever and he was tired of seeing her be the victim of her own labours of love.
“Okay.” She sighed in defeat, as her glare turned into an exhausted and disgruntled stare, “Okay, I promise to put myself first from now on, no matter what.”
“And I promise to take care of myself and not jump headfirst into danger without a second thought.” Taichi chimed after her, a smile spreading across his face as he realised that he’d actually gotten Sora to bend to his demands.
There was a first time for everything, he thought to himself, and secretly hoped that this wouldn’t be the last of it either.

💘 for violent?
send me 💘 + A SHIP and i’ll tell you—
This got uhhhh really long whoops sorry
where they first met and how
Vile shows up to a battle Mevolent is fighting and just. Joins in.
Mevolent doesn't personally spot him, but several of his officers do - Vile has no colours on his armour, so they have no idea which side he's on, and he doesn't seem to care very much which side the men he's killing are on either. He's after the big prize - the Sanctuary general leading the opposing side - but anyone who gets in his way is fair game, no matter who they support.
One of Mevolent's men reports this after the battle is over, because it's strange enough to warrant a mention: the Necromancers have hardly left their temples in a hundred years, why is this one showing up now? Mevolent dispatches some people to round up the stranger and bring him in (which makes for a lot of very uneasy soldiers), but they find him loitering around outside the camp and he surrenders without a fuss.
When he's brought to Mevolent, Mev has had some time to bathe and get changed and is lounging around in a bathrobe with a glass of wine. He asks some questions, Vile answsrs them. Mev idly mentions that Vile seems very confident for a man who killed some of Mevolent's own soldiers - ordinarily, this would be something Mev would execute him for. But Vile tosses the enemy general's head at Mevolent's feet - ("Killed a few of theirs, too.") - and essentially prompts, do you want me on your side, or theirs?
Mev takes him.
how long their ‘flirting’ phase was before feelings got involved
Actually - from the first time they meet.
At some point, Mevolent prompts Vile to take the helmet off - it's rude not to, how is he ever supposed to trust a man he's never seen? And Vile knows it's a risk, but he's also fairly sure Mevolent never saw Skulduggery Pleasant up close anyway, so he does as he's asked.
Mevolent lets himself have a minute to be shocked. He was expecting another Baron. But Vile can't be any older than Nefarian, which means he's absurdly young to have that much power. And he's pretty, even if there's something...a bit off...about him.
(His first thought is that he's talking to Vile's reflection. He dismisses it almost immediately, but he knows something isn't right. He doesn't know that he's picking up on Vile needing A Lot of practice to get his fake body to look properly alive; he's a bit too pale, keeps forgetting to blink, he's unnaturally still...it's all a bit uncanny valley.)
He starts flirting shortly after that. Just a little bit, to see if Vile leans that way or if he's visibly uncomfortable. He hooks up with China occasionally and has Serpine in his bed whenever he wants him, but he's always after something new, and Vile's arrogance and lack of deference is as refreshing as it is irritating. It's not love at first sight or anything though - all he's after is another notch on his bedpost.
who asks who out and how ( with a sign? spelled out on a cake? just a simple will you go out with me’? )
They never actually discuss it, they just sort of...accidentally fall into monogamy? Their relationship begins with casual sex, stress relief on Vile's side and a novelty (someone who regularly tells him no and makes him work for it) on Mev's. As they realise they actually get along very well outside the bedroom, it becomes more friends with benefits. But somewhere along the line, Mevolent stops and realises that he hasn't shared his bed with anyone else in over a year - and he hasn't minded. His primary hesitation over getting married to Serafina is whether consummating his marriage will upset his lover, when all that should matter is the political power and money she brings witj her. And he realises that somehow, without his noticing, Vile has become more important than Mevolent ever intended for him to be.
who proposes first
It's. Less a proposal, and more a discussion. Sometime after Serafina's death, Mevolent starts getting social pressure to marry again. Mothers are starting to fling their daughters at him at every opportunity because they all want to be the mother of the new queen. And he doesn't want to do it again, have another political marriage that will definitely cause problems between him and Vile. He's in a position of considerable power by this point and his inner circle has been made aware of his sins thanks to Serpine, so he decides that fuck it, he wants to go public with their relationship.
Vile lets him - on the condition that it's not a big public spectacle. So Mevolent combines their family crests (called "impaling") which is what happens with married couples - so instead of having a banner with Mevolent's crest hanging in the Great Hall, it would be half his crest and half Vile's, joined together in the same shield (escutcheon). He has to have a crest drawn up for Vile, of course, but it's a quiet way of making it Very Clear that he's off the market.
if they keep / kept their relationship secret or let everyone know right away
They're a secret for the better part of fifty years. Mevolent is taking a big risk getting involved with a heretic, so he doesn't want to chance being open about Vile until he's completely confident in his victory and his power as ruler of the world. Vile is absolutely fine with this arrangement - not because he cares what people think, but because it's court custom to fawn over Mevolent's favourites to try and curry favour with him, and being the highlight of a social event is Vile's idea of hell.
where the proposal happens and how ( kiss cam at a baseball game? on a hillside surrounded by ducks? at a disney park? )
Nothing quite that romantic. Mevolent is over 1000 years old, and in ancient Ireland, if a couple decided they were married? They were married. There was no need for a ceremony or vows or a priest involved. They might announce it to a few witnesses, just to make it Extra Valid, but even that wasn't necessary.
That had changed quite a bit by the time Vile was born, but if Mevolent says something is legal, it's legal, because who's going to stop him? And he knows that's preferable to Vile, because he hates being the centre of attention. The sort of big extravagant ceremony he had when he married Serafina would have Vile running for the hills.
It's not valid in the eyes of the church, of course. Vile is a heretic - the church barely considers him human. It takes balls to say no to Mevolent, and it's not usually a wise idea, but that is just a little bit too far for the Faceless Priests, and they turn him down.
(He accepts it with good grace once he realises they really won't be pushed. Convincing Vile to say vows in a church of a religion he finds ridiculous would be. A Challenge™ anyway. He's learned to pick his battles over the years.)
Once they've decided "okay, we're in this for the long haul, guess we're married now" Mev takes off to one of his summer palaces for a month to "supervise repairs" and takes Vile with him "as a bodyguard", which is common enough that nobody bats an eyelid. They're long since back from their honeymoon by the time anyone realises that's what it really was.
if they adopt any pets together
Mevolent, like any self-respecting monarch, keeps horses.
Animals can sense death, so Vile is unsettling to them by nature. But he spends so much time around them that they eventually get desensitized to him. He's been a big rider all his life, surrounded by horses and riding and hunting since infancy, and he knows a lot about all things horse.
Mevolent starts feigning interest in the horses when he's trying to get Vile into bed, as an excuse to run into him and start talking. But he was born a peasant, raised a slave, and has only ever really seen the horses as a status symbol, proof of how far up he's come in the world, so he's not prepared for...quite how horsey real gentry can be. He tries to start a casual chat about maybe breeding this stallion with that mare, complete with a clever double entendre about how sometimes couples who don't look all that compatible on the surface have the most explosive chemistry, flirtily asks what Vile thinks, and Vile...infodumps all things horse-breeding at him for four hours straight. Which was not what he was expecting, but the enthusiasm is actually pretty endearing.
who’s more dominant
The short answer: Mevolent.
The long answer: It's complicated.
In bed, Mevolent dominates because Vile lets him. He gets off on the power exchange, microdosing the subby side he had as Skug by handing control over to someone he trusts not to hurt him. It's also part of how he tries to deal with his trauma - subconsciously reenacting having his control forcibly taken away when Serpine was torturing him (by willingly ceding it to Mevolent) but with a different, more enjoyable result. He still makes Mev work for it, though - he won't just roll over without a playfight first. That's part of the fun.
Outside the bedroom, their power dynamic is all over the place. Mevolent is Vile's boss. Vile is Mevolent's bodyguard. Mevolent is 600+ years older. Vile has been through hell and takes no shit from anybody. Mevolent is Vile's benefactor, as a heretic living in a theocracy that would burn him alive again. Vile is the most powerful Necromancer in known history.
It's a constant struggle for control between two very dominant personalities, and they thrive on it.
who’s more protective
They both have shades of this, even though they know the other can handle himself.
After the war is more or less over, and the affair is still going strong, Mevolent essentially assigns Vile to be his bodyguard. It's a good excuse to be together all the time, but Vile takes it seriously, and he's good at it. He's the one who warns Mevolent about Aby's assassination plot, and he also foils Serpine's bid for Mevolent's throne - he might have gotten the better of Mevolent alone, because he took him by surprise, but Mev and Vile fight as a team and cover each other's weak spots, so once Vile arrived, Serpine had to cut and run.
Mevolent is protective too, but he's less sensible about it. He sends Vengeous to investigate the draugar, even though Vile would've been the obvious choice - if nothing else, he has the ability to shadow-walk out of danger, which Mevolent would've known would be useful. But he sent Vengeous in blind, and took Vile to safety instead. On top of that, Vengeous is methodical and organised in a way Vile could never hope to match - he actually would've been more useful to Mevolent during a large-scale evacuation, just as Vile is perfect for one-man in-and-out recon missions. But keeping Vile safe was more important.
how long it is before they sleep together ( can be as in ‘had sex’ or as in ‘shared a bed’ )
Vile joins Mevolent in early 1854, they first have sex in late 1854 and first sleep together while Vile is recuperating in early 1855.
Mevolent marries Serafina in 1856, so their early years are full of drama.
if they argue about anything
"But really, do you think the gods will punish me for this [relationship]? Oh, stop laughing. I'm serious."
"Perhaps? How tragic. No Faceless heaven for you. Not that you'd enjoy it anyway. Nobody will fuck you once your face is all melted. You wouldn't cope."
"Do you have any idea how tempting it is sometimes to just have you executed?"
"Then nobody would be fucking you in this life either."
(They've been having this argument for 200 years.)
who leaves more marks ( lipstick, hickeys, scratchmarks etc. )
When they're really going at it, Mevolent tends to leave little finger-bruises where he's been holding Vile up or pinning his wrists. Vile is the one who leaves scratchmarks. And he actually bites - mostly Mevolent's bottom lip, when he's pissed off about something. Mev doesn't mind though - if they're in the mood for rough, they both enjoy a good power struggle.
On a soft day, it's just hickeys from both of them, but Mevolent also gives Vile several sigil tattoos, so (aside from the fact that they're invisible until they're used) he definitely leaves more marks.
who steals whose clothes and how often
Vile - mostly to doss around their rooms in when he can't be bothered to get dressed or they'll be fucking again shortly so there's no point. He also steals Mevolent's shirts and robes if he's injured - the good thing about having a partner so much bigger than you is that everything is baggy as hell. Perfect for hiding bandages or not chafing a healing wound.
how they cuddle ( spooning? facing each other? )
Vile's a burrower. He likes to get as close as he can, to steal as much body heat as possible, and bury his face in Mevolent's chest/neck/shoulder. It's a leftover thing from Serpine's dungeon - protecting his face while he snatches at sleep so he can't be woken by a sudden kick or punch to a vulnerable area. He's also that horrible gremlin partner who will use Mev's skin to warm his cold hands/nose/feet on.
Mevolent often absentmindedly plays with Vile's hair while he's waiting to fall asleep, just as something to do while he's thinking over anything he has to do the next day, etc. So he'll doze off with one hand tangled in the curls and the other resting on a hip or thigh or back.
what their favourite nonsexual activity is
They have A Lot in common. They're both big readers, they both like tactical games like chess, they spar together and teach each other battle tricks, they both like to ride, they both enjoy music and poetry and culture. They're also that couple who like to be antisocial together - Mevolent will get on with his paperwork at his desk, and Vile will be on the couch with a book, and they'll sit there in silence together for hours, just being companionable.
how long they stay mad at each other
Long enough for angry sex. That's usually how their fights get worked out.
what their usual coffee / tea orders are
Mevolent got a taste for green tea while he was campaigning overseas during the war, and still prefers it now. Vile drinks a bitter black atrocity, and anyone with sense won't speak to him until he's had at least one in the morning.
if they ever have any children together
I do have an AU where Mevolent decides he does actually want an heir, and they end up raising Caisson together - or rather, Mevolent raises Caisson dubiously assisted by Vengeous and Serpine, and Vile claims hs wants nothing to do with "the brat", but can't help sticking his nose in every five minutes because he has residual Dad Instincts and Mevolent is doing it wrong. Any family where Lord Vile is the responsible parent is probably not going to churn out a particularly well-adjusted child, though.
if they ever split up and / or get back together
Nope. They go into it as a casual thing, very much expecting it to fizzle out once one or both of them has had their fill. Two hundred years later, they're still together.
what their shared living space is like ( messy? clean? what kind of decor? )
A very grand, opulent goth baroque palace. Mevolent spent a lot of his youth in medieval France, and he was highly influenced by extravagant court style. He likes to be surrounded by beautiful things, and his home is no different.
(Yes, material wealth is a sin. No, he's not sorry.)
He likes rich, dark colours and fabrics, ornate furnishings and dark wood and disturbing religious artwork. He also indulges his own vanity every now and then by commissioning religious artwork of himself - including an exquisite stained glass window in the Great Hall, which Vile scoffs at for a year or so and then gleefully flings Abyssinia through.
Most of the day to day running of Mevolent's household is down to a small army of servants, which poses some problems for him early in his relationship with Vile. A maid will slip into his room early in the morning to light the fire so that the room has time to warm before he has to get up for morning prayers. Another servant delivers his breakfast, and for quite some time he has a valet who helps him dress. Any of them could see Vile in his bed and let the secret out.
Luckily for Mevolent, for all his faults, he's a good boss to work for. He knows all the servants he interacts with by name, and asks after their families. He's well-liked, and although the servants know about Vile a long time before Mevolent's inner circle, it's Serpine who spills the beans, not one of the workers.
if they have any ‘couple traditions’ ( buying a new mug for their collection every year? baking every friday evening? )
They have a rather warped version of a regular date night.
When Mevolent is interrogating Valkyrie, and she thinks she hears Skug coming to save her, three things are really notable:
Tumblr media
1) Mevolent knows those footsteps too, and he smiles when he hears them. So not only is he happy to see Vile, this is probably something they do at least semi-regularly - interrogating interesting or high-profile prisoners together. Either Mevolent sent for him, or he knows Vile is too curious to not come look in on an interrogation.
Tumblr media
2) The fuckin? Horny shadows? Mevolent has just died a violent death here, Necromancers are confirmed to be able to sense the lingering echoes of death and pain and anguish, and Vile's shadows are like mmmm tasty. This is where the headcanon comes from that he's rabid horny for recently-resurrected Mevolent. And Mev knows he does this, just soaks up all that energy, and he doesn't care. Love is letting your SO get a bit high on your agony vibes every day, I guess?
3) Vile comes to stand right beside the throne, without so much as a hello. This is...considerably more informal than the relationship Mevolent seems to have with Vengeous. In fact, for some reason Mevolent seems to treat Baron very unkindly in Leibniz - Vile is still very much a general and Mevolent's personal bodyguard, but Vengeous has been demoted to prison guard in all but name. When Mevolent starts investigating the draugar, he sends Vengeous into a situation that will very likely kill him, but takes Vile - the most powerful Necromancer alive and a living nuclear bomb of power - with him when he evacuates the city and flees for safety, even though the logical move would've been to reverse those assignments. Vengeous is clearly not personally close with Mevolent, but their synchronicity, constant proximity and the way others speak about them (like Serpine's lapdog comment) imply that Vile is.
This is actually the scene that made me start shipping them in the first place.
who falls asleep first and who wakes up first
Vile isn't a great sleeper - he has nightmares, and he'll often get up several times in the night for water or to go onto the balcony for fresh air or to quietly freak out in the bathroom for half an hour. But he sleeps better once he's sharing a bed with Mevolent. Mev generally runs hot, and he actually quite likes to be close, so he's A-OK with Vile burrowing into his side or under his arm and leeching all his body heat. When he's warm and feels safe, he has fewer nightmares, and he's more likely to get a decent amount of sleep.
Mevolent doesn't always wake first, but he does get up first: he goes to morning prayers, and leaves Vile to sleep in because he's a rotten little heretic.
who’s the big spoon / little spoon
Mevolent is the big spoon. Vile was freakishly tall for most of the centuries he's been alive - the average height of an enlisted soldier in the 16th/17th centuries was 5'5 - 5'6, and 25% of recruits were under the required height to use a musket (5'). So having someone he can sprawl out over who makes him feel small and protected is a novelty.
who hogs the bathroom
Vile. He has long-ass baths because he likes to nap in the warm water. He gets cold easily because he's technically dead and making his fake body thermoregulate takes focus he often just doesn't have, so he just sprawls out in a hot bath or in front of the fire like a fuckin lizard under a heat lamp
who kills the spiders / takes them outside
The servants. They live in a palace. There's an entire staff dedicated to cleaning and tidying and keeping the entire massive building shipshape. Neither of them have to lift a finger.

RFA and how MC gets them to sleep
I hope ya’ll enjoy these. do I need to make a masterpost? since I’ve got a couple of these now I don’t know. their all pretty recent so maybe its not necessary.
Jumin
-        You’ve gotten it down to a science at this point
-        “darling? I can’t sleep.” You call from the door way of his home office “do you mind reading to me? Like you did that first night?” that’s what gets him the mention of your first night with him.
-        “I, of course dearest” he says wearily placing a stack of papers to the side “just until you fall asleep though I do need to finish this”
-        You frowned a little at that. He hadn’t slept much these past weeks and when he did it was fitful and short lived. Tonight he would sleep. You would be sure of that.
-        “would you sit in bed with me? Just for a while? The bed is too big and cold for me to fall asleep without you.”
-        “you have plenty of blankets my love” he said narrowing his eye’s at you suspiciously
-        “it’s not about the blankets. I don’t love the blankets. I love you” then you saw it in his eye’s warmth, love and the tell tail signs of his resolve crumbling as he gave into your request. You didn’t like using his love for you like this but he had to sleep.
-        “I really can’t say no to you my love” he sighed following you towards the king sized bed you shared
-        “thank you honey bunny” you said pulling him to lay beside you leaning him against a pile of pillows so he was reclining enough to sleep comfortably but upright enough to read. Where he not so fatigued he may have questioned how you had planned it all so perfectly.
-        You handed him the book you two where currently reading and situated yourself against his chest humming happily
-        One chapter later and you could feel him running his fingers through your hair trying to see if you were awake
-        You stayed still careful to count your breath to keep it deep and slow
-        He sighed and settled himself a little before resigning to stay rather than wake you by leaving
-        After fifteen minutes you could hear his gentle and quite snores
-        Success.
-        The next morning you woke early and shut off his alarm before calling Jaehee
-        “mission accomplished Jaehee” you say smirking “he wont be in today but tomorrow he’ll be back to tip top shape”
-        “thank you MC. when he pushes himself this hard it often falls to me to fix the things his fatigue lets fall through the cracks. One day of rest saves us weeks of mistakes”
-        “a stitch in time saves nine as they say. Oh but I have to go if I’m not there when he wakes up he’ll try to go back to work”
-        “of course, and again thank you MC.”
  Yoosung
-        Honestly if you could just get him into bed you knew he would be out like a light
-        It was getting him to the bed that was difficult
-        So you played the last card in you deck, the ace.
-        “yoosungie? I’m going to shower and get ready for bed okay?”
-        “sounds good!”
-        “unless, maybe you wanted to join me?”
-        “jo- join you?” he spluttered turning away from his computer wide eyed and beet red
-        “well I thought, it might save time, and water and it might be fun.” With a wink you turned towards the bathroom where you already had everything prepared
-        Honestly the shared shower was simply a bonus to your plan
-        Call the fun times you shared a happy consequence of the plan.
-        You washed his hair with lavender scented shampoo to help you both relax and calm down
-        And on the way out you hand him the pajamas you had prepared
-        “you planned this”
-        “of course I planned this” you chuckled kissing his forehead “noona takes care of her puppy”
-        You could see his face darken and feel the shiver that ran down his spine at that and you couldn’t help the laugh that escaped your lips at the way his eye’s seemed to cloud for a fraction of a second
-        You pressed a quick kiss to his lips before pulling him to the bedroom where you sat him on the bed to towel dry his hair a bit more
-        “I love you” he whispers and you smiled gently at him. Pulling the towel off his head you pulled him against you “I love you too”
-        Laughing you pulled him to lay beside you before leaning over him to reach across the bed and turn off the bedside lamp
-        With on last kiss on his nose you bid him goodnight computer game forgotten in haze of showers and cuddles (amongst other activities)
Saeyoung
-        He knows what you’re up to.
-        But you’re wearing the cute cat pajamas he had bought you.
-        and you had completely designed your bed time routine around tempting him to bed
-        he had never even heard of bedtime yoga before you moved in
-        yet there you where contorted beside the bed showing of how flexible you could be and occasionally smirking into the camera you knew he was watching
-        so it wasn’t long before he found himself making his way to the bedroom
-        “ready for bed secret agent man?” you quipped and couldn’t help a smirk as you saw his face tint a slight pink
-        “are you kitten me?” he shot back and you had to cover your moth to stop the giggles
-        “come on I’ve even got my paw-jamas on” you manage through your giggles
-        “you’re doing this on purr-pose aren’t you?”
-        “guess the cats out of the bag how’d you know?”
-        “just a feline” both of your where lost in a fit of laughter at that point
-        you pulled him to the bed and made note of the dark circles under his eyes as you pulled a heavy weighted blanket over you both before snuggling up next to him
-        he had insisted he didn’t need it. “I don’t have anxiety, MC” he had said.
-        Next day shipping and an extra good night of sleep later he admitted the weight was comforting
-        Your rans your fingers through his hair and mumbled quietly to him about your day.
-        You had found that the quiet talk down helped him relax as he curled into your chest
-        This was the only time you ever saw him this small
-        Wondered if it was a product of his childhood that he disliked sleeping so much
-        Still you held him close and played with his hair absently as you recounted the story of meeting a stray cat on the way home
-        After a while you ran out of stories and moved on to trying new jokes searching for the ones that drew sleepy chuckles from his lips
-        Lulling him to sleep was simple enough. The hard part came after
-        Falling asleep without waking him up was always a struggle
-        He was a notoriously light sleeper
-        One wrong move or strange noise had him jolting upright and alert
-        Once you had startled him awake with nothing more than a yawn
-        Perhaps it was his training that had him on such high alert.
-        You hoped that slowly but surely he would learn to relax a bit more but you understood it could take years if it happened at all
Zen
-        He knows he should sleep
-        He just can’t some times
-        He’ll lie awake for hours if you don’t help him relax
-        On these nights you two have settled into a routine
-        You make him tea and brush his hair
-        “you know you don’t have to do that jagiya”
-        “I enjoy it your hair is always so soft!”
-        “are you jealous?”
-        “I would be if you weren’t my boyfriend. That’s the thing though your MY boyfriend meaning technically your mine and by extension your hair is mine”
-        “is that how it works?”
-        You lean down and kiss the top of his head
-        “yep that’s how it works”
-        “does that mean your mine too”
-        “always and forever”
-        “your so cute jagi!
-        After tea you both go through your nightly routines washing your face and getting ready for bed
-        On good night you share a bath
-        You lean against his chest and lay your head back on his shoulders while you both do a face mask
-        in bed you ask him to sing you a lullaby as you gently trace patterns into his chest
-        You hum along contentedly and smile when he yawns
-        After while his singing drifts off and you can hear his breath get deeper
-        he can sleep through quite a bit but you know that the second you pull away from him he’ll be up in a second looking for the warmth and weight of you
-        so you pull the blankets tighter around the both of you and slip into sleep yourself
Jaehee
-        you got to start early with Jaehee
-        no caffeine after noon or it’s a lost cause
-        after opening the café this got 1000% harder
-        you lure her away from work by offering to watch a Zen DVD with her
-        you pull her against you on the couch and hum along with the music quietly (she hates it if you sing along but humming is fine)
-        slowly she starts to relax against your chest and you know it’s time to move upstairs (wink wink. Wait no. you both need rest save the winks for next time)
-        “Jaehee?” you ask gently “how bout we head to bed? We have to open early tomorrow”
-        She yawns bit but you can see the defiance in her eye’s
-        “I should finish a couple more things before”
-        “no” you say sternly pulling her toward the bedroom
-        “but there’s still paperwork”
-        “and it will still be there in the morning. Look ill work the morning by myself so you can take care of it then but you need sleep”
-        She sighs but fallows you none the less
-        “your right MC.”
-        “it happens sometimes” you laugh winking at her and reveling in her averted eye’s and blushing cheeks
-        (wink wink? No just one wink. You still need rest)
-        Once in bed you snuggle together and just before drifting off you hear her mumble
-        “I’m so glad we’re friend” “I’m so lucky to have you”

Just Between Us | Part 3 | #ShawnMendesWritingCircle
Tumblr media
Part One by @lights-on-mendes
Part Two by @shessoparticular
A/N: I had so much fun writing this, it was aboloutley sick! I would have gone on for ages if i didn’t control myself haha. I do wish it could’ve been a bit longer though but I hope you guys love it.
After Shawn hung up the phone he immediately turned to you with a worried expression on his face. You mirrored his expression and Shawn instantly said “it’s okay, I don’t have to go. You know what, I won’t go...yeah. It’s not like I owe him anything.”
You could tell that Shawn wanted to help his friend out, so you encouraged him. “You should go. Come on, Ben is our friend and he really needs that promotion. Besides, it’s only one date. At the end of the day you’ll be in my bed again not whoever’s daughter you’re going on a date with. Plus you can’t blame him, we have been telling everyone that we’re not together so he probably thought about you subconsciously.”
Shawn sighed and nodded his head. “Alright, for Ben. At the end of this we’ll pretend that this never happened.”
You nodded and got into bed. You held your hands out for Shawn to enter and you cuddled in the bed. Shawn’s arms were wrapped tightly around you se if you were his lifeline, not wanting to let you go. Very soon only the sound of Shawn’s light snoring could be heard in the room. It became a catalyst which drifted you off to sleep.
In the morning when the two of you woke up, you reminded Shawn to give Ben a call as he promised he’d get back to him. Shawn picked up the phone but not before rolling his eyes as the phone rang.
Ben picked up on the first ring and without a good morning said “have you thought about it yet?”
Shawn again, rolled his eyes and sighed. “Yeah I’ve thought about it and I’ll go. For you though, I’m quite happy living the single life currently so I know I won’t like this date. It’s only the one right?”
“Yeah, Yeah of course. Thank you so much, you don’t know how much this means to me bro. I owe you one.” Ben spoke excitedly and then hung up.
For the millionth time that morning Shawn rolled his eyes, sighed and trudged his feet back into bed with you. He began getting comfortable and shutting his eyes just to get a few more minutes of sleep in when he opened his eyes just as fast as he closed them.
“Fuck!” Shawn rushes over to the nightstand where his phone laid and quickly picked it up to call Ben again, putting it on speaker this time.
Ben immediately picked up but this time Shawn could hear music in the background. “Why are you playing music this morning?”
“I’m celebrating man, I just heard great news from your mouth earlier so now I’m partying with a few roommates.”
Shawn sighed and rubbed his hand over his face. “Oh my goodness...anyway, I called again to ask when the damn date was.”
There was silence until Ben spoke “tonight.”
“Tonight?! What if I had said no? What would you have told your little flat mates then huh?”
“Yeah...I didn’t really think that through. I just assumed you’d say yes because we’re bros and we know each other.”
“Bro...we’re not bros like that.”
“Sure we are, you just called me bro right now. Alright bro, I’ll text you the address later bro. Be on time bro. You’ve never been on a date before so I think I’ll have to give my bro some tips.”
“Can you stop saying bro? I don’t need tips from you, I’m perfectly capable of knowing how a date goes.” Shawn glanced at you as you were snickering under the sheets. He immediately thought about your date the night before and how nothing could compare to spending time with you.
“Sorry bro. What’s got you in a bad mood this morning? You just told me you wanted to go.”
“Yeah. But for your sake, I don’t do blind dates. I don’t even know who this girl is.”
“Awww thanks bro. You’ll be fine, and even if you don’t like her, at least I got the promotion.”
Shawn laughed at that. “What did I tell you about bro?”
“Sorry bro.”
Shawn rolled his eyes before Ben hung up. He laid back down on the bed and turned to you. “I think Ben may have had too much to drink on that call.”
“Tell me about it. It’s like 8 am and he’s drinking? I don’t know how he’s gonna handle the actual job.” You both looked at each other and burst out laughing.
“I love you Y/N, you know that right?” Shawn said with a bright smile on his face.
“Yeah, I love you too baby.”
Ben texted Shawn the address of the place he was going to meet the girl and he was definitely dreading the entire evening. You helped him get ready and he wore casual clothes because a whole ass suit was not worth his time. Especially when he wasn’t going to enjoy it.
The specific time of the date was at 7pm so Shawn started getting ready to head off but not before giving you a kiss and whispering some particularly dirty things in your ear of what would happen once he got back. You bid Shawn goodbye as he set off on what was going to be the most horrible evenings of his life.
Shawn did indeed, as Ben told him, show up early. He quietly sat down at the cafe and waited for the so called Mr Beese’s daughter to show up. About 10 minutes later he saw a figure approach him.
“Shawn right?” She said and he nodded.
“Hi, I’m Lila. I’ve heard so much about you and I must say you are very very handsome.”
Shawn felt a little uncomfortable having another girl who wasn’t his secret girlfriend call him handsome. He knew he had to be nice so he replied back with “thank you, same to you.” His compliment game had plummeted since he started dating you because he didn’t need it so much anymore.
Lila looked nothing like you. She didn’t exactly give off a pleasant vibe at first. It was more of a ‘I want to take you home and fuck you right there and forget about this date vibe’. Shawn did not appreciate that at all but he had to start small talk with Lila.
As the time went on his attitude towards Lila changed he started to like her personality as he got to know her a little better (unwillingly) and he realised that he would love to have her as a friend. Her cocky vibe started to melt away and he started to see what she truly was.
He liked her. Don’t get me wrong, he still loved you with 1000% of his heart and saw Lila as nothing more than a friend. The way he approached the situation didn’t seem like it though.
It was clear Lila liked Shawn too but more than a friend and she definitely appeared like she wanted to date him and explore the relationship and maybe Shawn being exceptionally nice to her to cover the fact that he really wanted it to end and go home to you gave her mixed signals.
The next thing Shawn knew Lila leaned over the table and kissed Shawn. Shawn’s eyes widened and he froze. As soon as it occurred to him to pull away, the sudden click of a camera from the other end of the cafe went off.
Shawn pulled away and glanced at whoever took the picture. His cheeks became warm and started to go red in embarrassment. He knew he was fucked. He turned to Lila with sudden anger because he knew how bad this looked.
“What the hell was that for? Fuck! I didn’t wanna kiss you!”
“I thought you did. You were being really nice and I thought it was because you liked me.”
“Yeah I did but only as a friend! Nothing more. I- I’ve gotta go” Shawn quickly stood up and started speeding towards the door, leaving Lila confused as ever.
Shawn didn’t go home that night. He knew he should have but he spent hours wandering around trying to process what happened and how he was going to tell you about it. Surely the paparazzi couldn’t have spread that photo that quickly right?
Meanwhile, you were at home waiting for Shawn to come home. After whispering all those things in your ear earlier you’d think he’d try to rush home to make it happen. Hours turned into more hours which turned into more hours waiting for Shawn. Before you knew it you were asleep and Shawn’s presence was definitely not in the house.
You eventually woke up and opened your eyes expecting Shawn to be with you but to your dismay he wasn’t. You started to think the worst and maybe Shawn did like that girl more than you. What if they hooked up? No Shawn would never do that you thought.
To keep those thoughts out of your mind you decided to switch the TV on and occupy yourself with that until your man came back. You switched it to the celebrity news channel because that was where all the drama was happening and you definitely did need excitement at the moment.
What you didn’t expect to see was a picture of Shawn with who you assumed was Mr Beese’s daughter kissing on the screen. You gasped immediately as your eyes went wide but nothing could compare to the feeling you felt in your chest.
Your entire heart was shattered.

Summary:  Anne and Gilbert embark on their journeys, but stay close to each other at heart. Courting across 1000 miles isn’t easy, but they’re more than willing to step up to the task. (A post s3 story).
Note: Much love to @withlovegilbert and @js589 who gave me their thoughts about this chapter. You guys rock! ♥
*
At first, Gilbert thought he was dreaming of feathers—silky feathers trailing down his nose with effervescent softness in long strokes. Once, twice, three times...He scrunched his nose at the tickling sensation, unwilling to move away from whatever warmth he was encased in. The feather smoothed over his brow, trailing down in deliberate slowness to his upturned lips.
“Gil,” a familiar voice whispered, breaking into his dreamless slumber. “I’m loath to wake you up, but I have to get ready to go.”
Gilbert’s eyelashes fluttered on his cheeks as he stirred awake. His dopey grin was sunshine in the dawn-less room when he peered down at the young lady sharing his pillow. For a moment, he could forget that just an hour from now Anne would be gone. Her fingers still caressed the apples of his cheeks, lingering for a long moment. When her touch vanished, she tried to push out of Gilbert’s arms, only to be held against his chest.
“Anne, it’s four in the morning. Lay with me awhile,” he said, his voice hoarse with sleep.
“I have to make the five o’clock train,” Anne replied softly. “Thirty minutes to get dressed. Twenty to walk to the station. Leaves me a few minutes to spare to buy my ticket and board.”
“Take a later train,” suggested Gilbert.
“If I don’t arrive home at a decent time, Mrs. Blackmore will think I’ve been killed, or worse, eloped. Even then, she believes I’m visiting a female cousin on family matters.”
“It’s not too late to elope,” he teased, his lopsided grin finding its way to her jaw. His breath was warm against the morning chill, nearly enticing enough to convince Anne to throw caution to the wind and slide back into bed. Instead, she pressed a good morning kiss to his waiting lips and moved in search of her luggage.
“You should rest a bit longer. I’ll wake you before I leave.”
“If you think you’re walking by yourself to the station, then you are sorely mistaken,” grumbled Gilbert. He dramatically swung his legs out of bed and grimaced at the cold air.
“I don’t mind going to the station by myself. You’re probably still exhausted from the party,” Anne argued, but Gilbert heard none of it.
He grabbed some trousers and a fresh shirt from his dresser, then spoke in a gentle voice, “I’ll wait downstairs for you. Take your time.”
When he was gone, his essence still lingered about the room in the way it smelled and felt. Lovingly, she caressed the soft surface of his quilts, then the smooth wood of his table and dresser. The mirror hanging on the wall had already collected a few month’s worth of dust, but instead of wiping it away, she drew a heart and labeled her initials with her pinky. There might never come another time she could return to the comfort of this room, and as she crossed the threshold, she gave it one last indulgent look.
By the time she was presentable, Gilbert had cracked open one of his textbooks, reading it with sleepy eyes. When he heard her footsteps creak down the stairs, he gently closed the book and smiled wistfully. Anne fell by his side, giving his hand a squeeze.
“Can’t keep Queen Anne away from the island too long, can we?”
Gilbert was quiet the entire walk to the station. Any light topics Anne tested out failed miserably to lighten his mood. He met each of her hopeful smiles with unconvincing attempts of his own, every time turning his face away to the street lamps. The sky was still  obsidian in the fresh hours of the morning, unpleasantly starless and cloudy, making Anne glad Gilbert had insisted on accompanying her.
He waited on the platform as Anne purchased her ticket, shoulders slumped. With the ticket in her purse, she came to his side and placed a hand on his shoulder. Anne’s heart dropped when his heavyhearted eyes met hers. His strong facade had finally fallen, leaving a troubled frown unveiled.
“Gilbert?” Anne asked gently. She couldn’t bring herself to ask what was wrong, unsure if she’d be able to leave if he told her. Gilbert’s gaze fell down to where she was reaching for his fingers.
“I haven’t been entirely honest with you,” he admitted. Despite the bitter taste in her mouth, Anne schooled her features and nodded in encouragement.
“That’s okay. You can tell me now.” She meant it.
Behind him, a high whistle resonated within distance as the train slowly screeched began to screech to a halt. Gilbert caught Anne looking over his shoulder and a flash of panic washed over him. He followed her gaze where a handful of tired passengers boarded the train, but when he felt a soft caress touch his cheek, he whirled back to Anne.
“Go ahead,” Anne prodded gently.
“I really miss you,” he confessed breathlessly. Anne scrambled for something to say to ease his heart, but he rambled on before she could find the right words. “Bash asked you to come because he figured out how homesick I’ve been. It was never so bad because I’d always traveled to escape the realities of home. But now, with Bash and Delphine in Avonlea, and you in Charlottetown…”
Anne’s stomach twisted.  “I...had no idea.”
“I tried really hard to hide it in my letters,” Gilbert muttered. “But one of them to Bash was too vague. He made me tell him what was wrong.”
“I should’ve been able to tell,” Anne lamented.
“No, Anne, I made sure you wouldn’t be able to tell. I didn’t want to worry you. You’ve got too much going on.”
Anne felt like she was caught in the undertow, floundering desperately for something to say that would take the cracks in his heart and mend them instantly. Yet she knew that nothing she said could change the fact that in a few moments they’d begin another month and a half of painful separation. She wished she had thought to bring a token of home, anything from the island that she could’ve stuffed into her luggage. All she had was a parting embrace, one that she wrapped around him like an old heirloom quilt. As Gilbert’s desperate arms came around her, she hoped that her warmth would linger enough to give him the strength he needed to see his heartsickness through. Anne could feel Gilbert’s breath on her throat as he heaved a sigh of relief, dissolving into her touch and allowing her to hold him up.
“Remember what I said, alright? You’re intelligent and brave. You’ll get used to life here. If last night was any indication, you already have,” she said, determined and kind.
He nodded against her shoulder, running his fingers over the softness of her hair with tender reverence. Behind him, the train master gave her the Time’s Up glare.
“I have to go,” Anne lamented. Gilbert squeezed his eyes shut.
Instead of asking her to stay, as he so desperately wanted to, he pressed his lips into a thin line and nodded. “Alright.”
A month and a half suddenly seemed like an insurmountable mountain, the end of which was deathly out of reach. Even though her limbs were weary with lack of sleep, she found the strength to pull away from him to memorize the lines of his cheeks and jaws. She’d never forget the way he looked the day she met him, or the day when he first kissed her, but she wanted to burn today’s Gilbert into her memory and save it for days that were stormy and punishing. Gilbert seemed to be doing the same.
Ever so slightly he tilted his face to her, and she met him, crashing a month’s worth of kisses to his lips until the feeling of it was unfading. His hands were under her cheeks, holding her to him until he had tasted enough of the sunshine on her lips to hold him together.
When they broke apart, Anne leaned down to grab her carpet bag and gave Gilbert one last beaming smile.
“How’s two letters a week sound?”
Gilbert let out a chuckle that was rough with stifled tears. “That sounds perfect.”
She took one step away, then two.
“See you at Christmas.”
“Safe travels.”
As she boarded, the door closed behind her blocking away the fresh air for the duration of her day long journey. When she found her seat, though, she found Gilbert was still there, watching and smiling.
Anne watched her beloved until the sight of him turned into a silhouette of shadow against the train station. Her eyelids grew heavier and heavier, but hope sparked in her chest as Gilbert heaved a sigh and stepped off the platform with a renewed strength in his shoulders. She imagined him trailing up the Toronto streets like they were Avonlea hills, sheltered in warm dew and residual moonlight. And then, she fell asleep.
*
It was the last days of November and several love letters from Anne later when Gilbert began to feel like he could actually imagine a future for himself in Toronto. It could never be a permanent future, but it seemed less daunting to imagine another four years in the city—maybe even seven if he wanted to obtain his licensure here. It also meant that he decided to stop living like each day was a battle to survive until Anne and Bash’s next letters arrived.  He would have to start doing things here that he liked and turn this loud, boisterous city into a home away from home.
Gilbert went to explain all of this to Dr. Sullivan, who bid him to sit in a stiff leather chair upon seeing the young lad in the doorway. November had brought with it many dreary days of cold and early snow, but today the sun made a much needed reappearance. It filled Dr. Sullivan’s office through two small windows, drowning away the light of a small electric lamp.
“I bet you caught a few perplexed stares on your way here, a medical student wandering the humanities hallway,” Dr. Sullivan teased. He pulled his glasses from his nose and folded them into his breast pocket, peering at Gilbert curiously.
“That’s actually what I wanted to talk to you about. I was wondering if I might beg your help for something?” Gilbert replied, dropping his leather bag onto the ground beside him.
“No begging will be necessary. Your visits are always welcome. Besides, I’ve been marking freshman essays for nearly two hours and could use fresh company. What has you on the wrong side of school?”
“When Anne was here in October, you told her about the Women in Literature class you’re offering next semester. I wanted to add it to my class schedule, but the registrar refused. She said the class is already full, and even if I got you to sign me in, she’d refuse to forward the application to the dean of the humanities college.”
“That’s absurd. Did she give a reason?”
“Only that with fifteen medicine and biology credits, the last thing I’ll want to do is spend my nights reading George Eliot and Jane Austen.”
Dr. Sullivan leaned back in his chair.
“She does make a valid point. The class is a lot of reading—one or two texts a week. Emily tells me you’re already studying more than any other student she’s had. Are you sure you’re prepared for the extra coursework?”
“Anne is back home taking on two fields of study. What good would I be if I couldn’t handle one extra class? I’m determined to do it. I only came because there’s the matter of the class being full.”
“And Miss Eaglen in the registrar’s office taking your fate into her own hands.”
“That too.”
Pushing himself back from his chair, Dr. Sullivan ambled over to his filing cabinet and pulled open a raggedy drawer. He retrieved a stack of type-written pages and turned them toward the sunlight so that he might see more clearly.
“The class is indeed full, but half the seats will be free by the time we finish introducing the syllabus. If you come on the first day, you’ll have nothing to worry about. I’ll speak with Miss Eaglen.”
Gilbert blinked. “Pardon, did you just say that half the class is going to withdraw?”
Dr. Sullivan didn’t look up from his roster. “I did.”
“People can’t hate reading that much.”
“No, but they can and will despise a black professor enough to drop the class.”
Gilbert’s face fell. He couldn’t imagine being accepted into the University of Toronto, only to reject a member of its faculty based on such...asinine prejudice. A faculty member with a PhD, campus wide acclaim, and a kind disposition, at that! How could anyone claim to have gotten the fullest extent of their UofT education if they closed off their minds and only listened to viewpoints of people just like them?
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a student so upset on my behalf,” noted Dr. Sullivan, interrupting Gilbert’s mental tirade. Gilbert looked up, only to feel his cheeks locked in a tight scowl. He straightened his chair, expelling his frustration with a small sigh.
“It just hits a bit close to home.”
Dr. Sullivan sat back down at his desk, waiting patiently for Gilbert to elaborate.
“My entire family is black,” Gilbert clarified softly. “My brother, my niece, his mother, my late sister-in-law, her son. It’s not the same, but it breaks my heart to watch them struggle in my hometown, the home that I shared with them. I had hoped that the cruel behavior they encountered could be blamed on the small-town mindset of our community. I didn’t expect to cross the country and find it here in the city too.”
“Every corner of the world has its own brand of enmity and unfairness. You won’t be able to escape it. You could take your brother and his family across the Atlantic and you would find this to be true.”
“I have,” Gilbert chuckled bitterly. “The states, Cuba, Trinidad, Spain. And you’re right, in each country they looked at Sebastian like he was living on the wrong planet.”
“I know the feeling.”
Gilbert wasn’t sure what to say next. Part of him wanted to apologize, but for what? What was some fruitless apology supposed to fix after a lifetime of enduring injustice? It wouldn’t make Dr. Sullivan’s students stay, it wouldn’t make it easier for Delly to go to school, it wouldn’t erase a lifetime of service from Bash or Hazel.
He shook his head. If Anne was here, she’d know what to say.
He must’ve looked particularly defeated, because Dr. Sullivan only smiled and said, “Alright, Gilbert. How about a proposition?”
“A proposition, sir?”
“I propose an independent study. You’ll complete the same assignments as your peers, but will report for class with me in my office twice a week. You’ll have to come prepared with topics for discussion and you won’t be permitted to cut class. And no asking Anne to summarize the books for you. You must complete all the reading yourself.”
When he was done, he extended a hand across his desk and waited for Gilbert’s approval.
Gilbert only had to ponder his options a moment before a grin blossomed on his face. He shook Dr. Sullivan’s hand more excitedly than was permitted for a gentleman and said, “Yes, I think that arrangement sounds wonderful. Thank you so much!”
“Don’t worry about the registrar. She’ll only change her mind with your advisor’s approval, but I’m sure Emily will be more than happy to give it.”
Hurriedly grabbing his things, Gilbert clutched his bag to his chest.
“I’m thrilled, sir. Thank you again.”
Dr. Sullivan chuckled, sliding his glasses back onto his face and leaning forward over the stack of freshman essays before him. As Gilbert rose to leave, he called out, “Gil, one more thing.”
Gilbert paused in the doorway, glancing over his shoulder.
“Yes?”
“What’s the real reason you wanted to take the class?”
The lad shrugged. “You know I love to read.”
Dr. Sullivan was not wholly convinced.
“And?”
“And it’ll give me something to talk to Anne about in my letters,” he confessed. Dr. Sullivan threw his hands in the air and Gilbert let out a loud laugh. “She’s an English major, I have to stay on my toes! But I really do like to read, I promise!”
“You better. You’ve got a lot of it next semester!”
*
There was no other explanation, except that she was in trouble—so much so, that she was about to be reprimanded by the oldest and sternest professor in the entire English department. Professor Wood was due any second and would no doubt deliver a fierce verbal lashing. Why else would this particular group of schoolmates be summoned into this dim classroom so late in the day? Anne scanned the room, counting three faces that she had...stated an opinion at. Sternly. Perhaps a bit loudly. It had only been a matter of time before her classmates banded against her and the day had finally come.
But who could blame her? It had long been established that Anne was anything but timid and demure, so certainly if they said obtuse things in class, it had to be someone’s job to correct them. If her professors were planning on merely nodding and humming “Hmm, yes, interesting point,” the task would just have to go to her.
“Do any of you know what this is about?” murmured Janie Paul, the only person in the group Anne hadn’t corrected in class. Mostly, though, this could be attributed to the fact that Janie Paul rarely said...well, anything
“We all know what this is about. Or who, ” lamented another classmate.
Four sets of eyes slowly turned to Anne, who leaned against one of the desks with crossed arms.
“It could be about anything!” argued Anne. “Unless you all have been conspiring.”
“Oh please,” scoffed Anne’s worst nemesis. “Like we’d even need to. I bet right now the entire faculty is gathered in the conference room deciding whether or not they want to allow you to remain enrolled at Queens. We’re only here because they want witnesses.”
“That’s preposterous!” Anne snapped.
“Why? You’re a disturbance to class and detrimental to the distinguished education we’re supposed to be receiving.”
“Having a bright mind and a quick wit is not a detriment, Georgie Beckham. Nor is having your opinions challenged. In fact, I’d say it’s rather good for you.”
Anne wondered that there were many things that would do Georgie Beckham some good. A change of heart, a swift kick to the behind, a bath. He was a shortish young man with flat yellow hair that stuck his head with sweat, grease, and dirt. The bottom of his chin was tan from always walking around with his nose pointed up, and he glided about as if he were Queen Victoria herself. Anne had decided with a fury that of all the disagreeable people she’d met, Georgie Beckham was by far the worst. She hated him more than she hated Gilbert the first time she met him, and Georgie wasn’t nearly as handsome or charming.
Georgie’s snobbish nose crinkled when Anne spoke, as if her very essence smelled too strong, like stale perfume or a full garden.
“When they kick you out of Queens, you’ll have to get married to escape ruin and there’s no way you’ll find someone who’ll want you,” he sneered.
For the briefest of moments, Anne wondered what would happen to her if Georgie was right. She supposed she wouldn’t have the money or credibility to attend a different school. Instead, she’d just help on the farm until Gilbert graduated college, then they’d get married. For an even briefer moment, Anne pondered what it would mean if Gilbert decided not to marry her. Such imaginings were too painful, and she pushed aside her doubt.
“I suppose I’m fortunate you’re full of hot air, then,” Anne stated bitterly.
Just then, the classroom door swung open and in walked Professor Agnes Wood, a creaky woman of ninety who still had the energy to teach British Classics and Senior Shakespeare twice a day.  Upon stepping into the room, she sensed the restive atmosphere and gave Anne a wary look.
“Stirring trouble already, Miss Shirley?”
“No ma’am. We were just anxious to uncover why you’ve called us all today.”
“All will be revealed presently. Take a seat.”
The five wary students did as they were told, Georgie taking the seat furthest from Anne. Professor Wood moved to the front of the class, commanding attention in its rawest form with a domineering scrutinization.
“Thank you all for arriving in a timely manner. I’m sure receiving this summons has made you curious to the reasoning.” She paused, as if waiting for nods of agreement, but was met with five frightened faces—one especially freckled and pale. To prevent further trepidation, she continued.
“It is my pleasure to inform you of a potential opportunity that has befallen you. You five have been chosen from the entirety of the Education program’s long list of pupils. As you know, Queens is a traditionally education focused college. Many of Canada’s greatest educators have earned their teaching certificates within these walls, though the best of the best were granted this offer. Anne, you look as though you’re a second from keeling over.”
Anne’s head snapped up.
“Oh, I’m just full of suspense,” she admitted eagerly. “Please, continue!”
“Two of you will be granted the opportunity to assist real teachers in their classrooms for the duration of a month. As student teachers, you’ll be expected to aid the instructor in their daily lessons and perhaps lead a few exercises yourself. The assignment is planned for September of next year, however the application process may take some time. The chosen candidates will be announced finals week in May. ”
“If we’d be teaching in the fall, won’t that put us behind in credit hours?” the classmate at Anne’s right asked. Anne rolled her eyes. What were credit hours when there was real actual teaching to be done?
“As a full time hands-on assistant, you would be granted nine credits of your recommended fifteen. Your remaining two classes would be completed via correspondence until you could resume them October 1st. Though only two of you will be chosen, the rest of you needn’t fear. Other opportunities may arise in the coming years and you all are model candidates. I’m sure you have questions, however, and I’ll endeavor to answer them.”
Questions exploded out of the students the way volcanoes erupt after years of boiling. Yet, of the students bursting at the seams with questions, there were two who remained painfully silent. Anne was one, lost in the whirlpool of her thoughts. But in the madness, she realized with narrow eyes there was one more person who was just as quiet and determined as she was—Georgie.

My dear man, who is here with me in spirit and heart,
I would like to begin with a disclaimer: Your last letter had me blushing as much, if not more, than you surely intended. I see through your little tricks, Gilbert Blythe, and let me say, I delight at turning to mush upon reading your words. I will acknowledge them in due time, but first, a matter of utmost importance.
I. HATE. GEORGIE. BECKHAM. I can’t recall if his name has snuck its slimy way into one of my letters before, but here it has made a most unwelcome appearance. And yes, I know hate is a term that Marilla would reprimand me for, yet it cannot and will not be denied that he is the worst person I’ve ever met. Gilbert, I cannot emphasize this enough. I know that in the past, I have not been an excellent judge of character of the male sex, but Georgie has done more than tug my braid and call me carrots. He’s bitter towards women, worships himself in class, and once, I heard him say the most atrocious things about the people of the Bog. Billy Andrews has met his match. And worst of all, Gil-est of Gils, we’re competing for the same student teaching position!
I see I am getting quite ahead of myself. Allow me a moment to compose myself. There.
I have been chosen along with four other students to compete for an opportunity to assist a teacher in an actual school. Professor Wood even thinks that if our progress is satisfactory enough, that we’ll be permitted to lead exercises all on our own. Think of how much I could learn, how ahead of my classmates I’d be! Anne Shirley-Cuthbert, a bona fide teacher! Or, very nearly one!
Of course, there is the chance that Georgie could win the other slot if I receive the first. Oh, this troubles me almost as much as if he were to get the position instead of me! I would fail at the assistantship miserably if he were there, always criticizing every little thing I did. It can’t happen, Gilbert!
It isn’t entirely up to chance. I’ll just have to work very hard to put forth the best application Queens has ever seen. It’s quite involved too—essays, interviews, observations of my character. I’ll have to be on my very best behavior from now until May. Oh, and could I send you my first application essay? I’m writing about integration of community and its positive impact on children. I know you have plenty of reading of your own, so please don’t put yourself out.
Now! That is quite enough about schoolmate nuisances. How are you, my darling love? I’ve had the most peculiar feeling that you’ve had a very pleasant week since your last letter. Is that because Christmas holiday is very nearly upon us and it’s a mere fortnight until we’ll be reunited? That means we have precisely one week to devise our disguises, and I don’t mean fake mustaches and hats! My brand of deception is the flirtatious sort, involving carriage rides with you and promises to Marilla to not wander from Lover’s Lane. Except! We’ll wander off the road and find a place where even the most wandering eyes cannot amble. The falling snow will cover the evidence and I will have some much needed quality time with my ever-captivating suitor. How many kisses shall I reserve for you?
Oh,  how easy it would be to spend the rest of the evening writing the world’s longest letter to you. Ten pages on the sweetness of your eyes, another twenty on how divine it is to be wrapped in your warmth, tucked tightly into your arms. Instead, I must direct the vigor in my hand to many drafts of this application essay and begin planning on the second. When the application process is over in May, I’ll have all summer to venerate every ounce of you. And remember, sweet one, I don’t do a thing half-way.
So for now, I’ll sign off.  As always, I miss you dearly. I feel like Mr. Rochester did when he thought Jane was going to leave him. If I tug this cord around my rib, will you feel it in Toronto, tugging on yours? Are we still connected in heart, mind, and spirit? I believe we are.
Reader, I love you.
Anne
*
The two weeks until winter holiday passed with surprising ease. The winter sun, which had gained a habit of suspending over the sky for long hours at a time, seemed to make the days pass at a bearable rate. Anne was relieved to find that finals week wasn’t nearly as dreary as the sophomores had cautioned. She studied long hours by her window, and found her concentration honed to perfection under a bright sun. Exams came and passed, and though she was confident she’d championed them all, she couldn’t feel complete freedom until she was home at Green Gables. When the Carmody-bound train screeched off toward home, Anne leaned her head on Diana’s shoulder and let out a soft sigh.
“Tired, Anne?” asked Diana, leaning her head onto Anne’s hair.
“A bit. That sigh just now was one of relief. American Literature and Geometry may distract one from the strains of homesickness, but college is nothing compared to being home.”
“I daresay I could weather any sort of sickness if you were beside me. I’m so glad I’m only taking a forty minute train ride and not a forty day trek across the ocean.”
Anne hugged Diana’s arm, bringing Diana’s piano-playing fingers to her lips.
“If you had gone to Paris afterall, I’m certain I would have perished. Now we have all month to revisit our old haunts and relive at least some of our youth.”
The train pulled into the Carmody station, pulling Anne out of her light sleep. The world outside moved by slowly as Anne nearly leapt across Diana’s lap to look out at the train platform. Among the many faces of the waiting and leaving, Anne couldn’t find Matthew or Marilla. For a moment, she wondered if something had gone wrong.
“Is that Sebastian?” asked Diana, pointing to the far left of the platform.
Anne grinned. Sure enough, there was Bash talking to Diana’s father in a casual manner. He wore two scarves wrapped around his face to block out the chill, but his eyes were unmistakable and he was wearing one of Gilbert’s old hats.
Knocking into some disgruntled passengers, Anne scurried as fast as she could off the train and over to Bash. He caught sight of her fiery hair among the crowd and stopped what he was saying mid-phrase.
“Now there’s a sight for sore eyes! Hello Anne,” he beamed.
Before she could think better of it, she jumped into his arms and pressed a warm kiss to the scarves over his cheek.
“My, Anne, you’re still quite public about your displays of affection,” commented Mr. Barry, who glanced nervously around the scowls of nearby travellers.
Anne pulled back with a chuckle.
“I do wish you would forget you ever saw that, Mr. Barry. Your family is far too close to Rachel Lynde.”
“Forget what?” Bash asked, but Anne waved her hand.
“Nothing! Nothing!” Before he could argue, she picked her bags back up. “Are you here to pick me up?”
“If you need a ride back home to Green Gables, I’d be happy to drive you, but no, I’m not here for you. I’m here for Gilbert.”
Anne’s heart jumped into her throat.
“Gilbert isn’t due back until tomorrow,” she stated, failing miserably at getting her hopes up.
“No, you weren’t due back until tomorrow. Gilbert was due back today.”
“But I marked my calendar as soon as I got his letter. I wrote to Matthew and Marilla and told them today.”
“Your calendar can say what it wants,” interrupted Bash. His gaze drifted behind her  shoulder. “But he’s right there.”
And he was. Marching through the crowd was a young man with snowflakes crowning his curly head and a blush from the chill on his dimples. The sight nearly brought Anne to her knees. She hadn’t realized how desperately she needed to see him, how dull the ache in her heart had grown in their separation. Because she was a woman of very little self-control, she cried out his name above the noise of the chatter with a delighted laugh. His attention snapped to her and he fumbled with his bag. He matched her elated laughter, walking as fast as he could through the web of people.
Anne shoved her bag into Bash’s arms and rushed to meet Gilbert halfway. When he was within reach, he made no greeting or polite salutations. Instead, he grabbed her face in his hand and kissed her in front of the entire train platform. He must’ve felt Anne’s knees go limp the second he tasted her bottom lip, because he quickly wrapped his arms across her back and held her to him.
Claiming the last bit of propriety she could, she pushed his chest and forced herself away. Gilbert chased her mouth, but sighed in resignation when she stuck a finger to his lips.
“Sorry, can’t help it,” he murmured. His breath was steam against her lips. “You just grow more beautiful by the day. Takes a lad off guard after a month.”
“Gilbert!” Anne chuckled, blushing.
“I’m serious! Exponential growth. I may have to start writing my will.”
“Stop,” reprimanded Anne, but her sweetheart knew she meant quite the opposite. “Where did you come from? You said you were coming tomorrow!”
“No silly, I said I was coming today . You were the one arriving home tomorrow. I even planned to pick you up tomorrow and surprise you.”
“Well, you’ve done that.” She froze. “Does that mean we were on the same train the entire time and didn’t know it!?”
“Probably,” Gilbert smiled, kissing her knuckles and earning a few doey-eyed looks from passing ladies. “We have nearly all month to make up for it. I was promised disguises and secret trysts.”
“So far, you’re getting the secret part all wrong,” a voice chimed in behind her. Gilbert rolled his eyes at Bash’s knowing smirk. “Say Anne, is this what Mr. Barry meant about public displays of affection?”
Anne tugged his hat clean over his eyes, making Gilbert laugh so loudly, someone beside him jumped.
“Alright lovebirds. Let’s fly on home to our separate nests.”
*
Christmas was a jubilant affair, the Cuthbert dinner table growing by two members for the third year in a row. When they realized that Hazel and Elijah filled the last available seats, Anne wondered who would stumble into their family this year and if they’d mind sitting at a separate table. With a child, a courting couple, and a spirit of song, the home was filled with endless moments of noise and joy.
But there were some quiet moments too. Anne and Gilbert particularly tried to find as many as they could together, but often found themselves interrupted by the baby, or by Bash’s halfway-intoxicated teasing. By the end of the night, Marilla had sensed her daughter’s frustration and taken her guests into the parlor where they could sit and converse. Anne stayed behind, tugging on Gilbert’s sleeve before he could walk away. He turned around, a happy smile on his face.
“Could you give me my Christmas present now?” asked Anne timidly. Gilbert’s face fell. His eyes focused on the cracks of the floorboards, as if he couldn’t bear to look at Anne’s disappointment.
“Love, I uh...I spent all my money on the ticket to come home. I don’t have anything for you, I’m sorry.”
But Anne shook her head, lifting his chin with a few fingers.
“I didn’t mean like that. You know I don’t mind if you don’t have anything for me.”
“Then what—?”
Anne revealed a small velvet pouch from behind her back. For a split second, Gilbert’s heart stopped, thinking that it was his mother’s ring she had found. For an even shorter moment, he realized if she had asked him to propose to her, he would’ve done it without hesitation and against his logical reasoning. There was a different swell in his heart when he realized that the bag didn’t contain a ring, but several scraps of paper.
“My letter,” he realized.
“What’s left of it, at least. Do you suppose you could piece it together?”
“I think so. I may not remember it verbatim, but the sentiment is impossible to forget.”
He spilled the torn pieces onto the floor, sorting out the words so he could see them all at once. Anne waited eagerly at his side, her hand finding its way to his hair as he began to piece the fragmented letter together. She tried not to read it as he strung sentences together, but couldn’t help but be drawn to the words affection and desire.
“You really did a number on this, didn’t you?” teased Gilbert when he found a few pieces with a stray letter or two, detached from its word.
“Whatever you did to mine must have been worse since it disappeared. ”
“Hey now,” protested Gilbert, smirking. “I can hardly be held accountable for something I never knew existed.”
“For all you know, it was on the bottom of your shoe, trekked into the mud and turned to mush.”
“Good thing it was short enough for you to remember it. I keep the second edition in my bedside drawer and read it before I go to sleep.”
“ Second edition ,” laughed Anne, leaning her head onto his shoulder. She turned her face to the fire and let her eyes fall close. Beneath her, Gilbert’s arm moved as he worked.
She didn’t realize she was dozing off until she heard, “Alright, Anne-girl. All finished.”
Rubbing the haze of sleep out of her eye, she peered down at the letter before her. It was pieced together like a puzzle with careful consideration with a few pieces from the sides missing. A quick surveyance of the writing told Anne that she’d still be able to read it, regardless of its inadequacies. With a steadying breath, Anne moved her eyes to the first line.
Dear Anne…
Gilbert pressed his lips to her cheek and rose to move into the other room.
“Where are you going?” asked Anne. Gilbert gave a small smile.
“I mean every word of that letter, but I’m still a bit embarrassed to watch you read it.”
“You write me love letters all the time.”
“But this is the love letter. The first. The ones I write you now are different because I’m well-practiced at it. But this one...It was my swan song, a last move of desperation.”
Anne bit back a smile at the rosy blush on his cheeks, anxious to finally see what all the fuss was about. Still, she mustered up some patience and reached out her hand to him.
“You don’t have to watch me read it, but stay by my side, will you?”
She didn’t have to ask twice.
“Alright.”
He settled beside her and took her hand in his, running his fingers over her knuckles and palm while she read. Anne, on her part, moved through the letter deliberately, letting every wash of emotion and reaction occur as it would. She’d forgotten that Gilbert had been longing like this, even during his involvement with Winifred. When the words became blurry with her tears, Anne read even slower and squeezed Gilbert’s hand in hers.
With love, Gilbert.
She read that line over and over, before glancing briefly at the postscript, then bringing herself back to the top. Gilbert was quiet beside her, letting her take the time she needed.
Anne’s heart was heavy, saturated with a million feelings she couldn’t quite place. She wanted to say that things would’ve been so different if she had read the letter when she’d found it in the first place, but what-if’s didn’t do her any good now. What mattered in this moment was the person beside her, whose heart seemed to beat in unison with hers. A person who was waiting very patiently for her reaction, even though it left him vulnerable and exposed.
Her palm found his face, and the second his hesitant eyes found hers, she kissed him slow and purposeful. She hoped that he could feel the years of longing she’d felt for him, the same way her letter had made her feel. She hoped it was electricity from the top of his head down to the soles of his feet, long and warm, unrelenting in its ensnarement.
When they broke apart, Anne gazed intently down at her hazel-eyed boy and counted the freckles around his nose. His heart was wide open on his sleeve, in his eyes, in his smile—beating and loving on full display without fear.
“I feel like I could take on the world just now,” Gilbert admitted blissfully.
“There’s two of us now,” noted Anne lovingly. “Let’s do it together.”

Lights, camera, lockdown! All the films I watched at home this November.
Last month, the UK went on a one month down lockdown, causing cinemas to shut and new releases to be put on hold.
Tumblr media
In fact, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet was the only multi million dollar film to be released this year. It’s painful to think that Dune was supposed to be released almost two weeks from now and that we have to wait several months to see the sci fi film hit screens. Despite the post poned releases and closing of cinema chains, there are still some great films I hadn’t seen and used last month as an opportunity to look into them. Even though I didn’t see as much as I did in October, the quality of the films I managed to see this month is high.
His House (2020) as seen on Netflix
Tumblr media
Starting off reasonably well with this horror brought to you by Netflix that centers the life around two immigrants and a spirit haunting the new lives they’re trying to build in the UK. It’s certainly a new perspective that I haven’t seen in horror and definitely isn’t a film for the fainted hearted for some of the scenes in this are genuinely terrifying. The overall message was thought provoking and poignant as it sort of spoke for those who’ve lost their lives attempting to seek asylum and those whoa are still struggling to find a new home.
His House is available to watch on Netflix. Score: 9/10
Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight (2020) as seen on Netflix
Tumblr media
Definitely one of the most surprisingly good films I watched this month, Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight is a classic Netflix horror from Poland. The film follows a group of Polish teenagers addicted to social media who are sent to a camp to curb their addiction. However, when on a hike through the woods, one of the teens goes missing and without a phone to call for help, the kids are forced to face two grotesque monsters feeding upon humans. From start to finish, this film was highly entertaining and had a good structure to it. There were no gimmicks or cliches and it’s definitely a film I’d recommend to just about anyone.
Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight is available to watch on Netflix.
Score: 10/10
The Ring (2002) as seen on BBC iPlayer
Tumblr media
Gore Verbinski’s (A Cure for Wellness, Pirates of the Caribbean) infamous horror is a cult classic and must watch for scary movie fans. Usually horror films can be too gimmicky and borderline cringey without an ounce of substance to them. However, The Ring is surprisingly good in that it possesses a deep narrative with three dimensional characters, good acting and wonderful direction. When a journalist’s (Naomi Watts) niece dies in unknown circumstances, she embarks on a journey to discover a horrifying tape that if watched, kills you in a week’s time. The box office sales for this film speaks for itself seeing as the film made nearly $130 million when it was released back in 2002. The Ring is certainly not for the faint hearted, so if horror isn’t your thing, I’d advise you stay well away from it.
Score: 9/10
Misery (1990) as seen on Netflix
Tumblr media
Stephen King’s Misery is turned into an unsettling thriller starring Kathy Bates and James Caan. Author Paul Sheldon (James Caan) ends up getting caught in a snow storm, that seems his car veer off the road, leaving him in a critical state. However, a seemingly caring and selfless woman, Annie (Kathy Bates) takes him in, using her work as a nurse to care for him. It turns out that Annie is a super fan of Paul’s work and the care she has for him soon turns nasty and sadistic, leaving Paul in a panicked state for he is in the middle of nowhere with a practical psychopath. I wouldn’t say Misery is one of best adaptations of King’s novels. There are better pieces of work by Stephen King that have been made into movies such as IT, The Green Mile and 1922. The pace was quite slow and the fact that it took place in only one settling detracted from the progression of the film. However, it’s entertaining, well cast and had a decent story to it.
Score: 7/10
Drive (2011) as seen on Amazon Prime
Tumblr media
Drive is 1000% one of the best films I’ve seen this year, in my entire life in fact. It’s incredibly bold, ambitious, vivid, subtle and heart wrenching at moments. A stunt driver (Ryan Gosling) is torn between the world of crime he partakes in and the love he has for a young woman (Carey Mulligan) that lives in the apartment next door to his. The subtlety and sensitivity that both Gosling and Mulligan brought to this film was so pure and authentic to their characters, whilst bringing an underlying sadness to the entirety of the film. By the end of the film you want to cry but aren’t sure why and these sorts of films are rare to find. The sound track and SFX in this are unreal, again adding to the confirmation that this film is one of a kind.
Score: 12/10
Time (2020) as seen on Amazon Prime
Tumblr media
I was delighted to see Amazon Prime had put this straight onto their service seeing as I’d missed out on Time during the London Film Festival two months ago. This is one of the most moving and deep pieces of work I’ve seen this year. Time is a documentary filmed over 20 years that details the life of a woman trying to seek justice for her husband who was put in prison for life for armed robbery. Not only is she fighting for her husband, but also her four sons, two of which weren’t even born when their father was put away in jail. Fox Rich lives in Louisiana, one of America’s toughest states when it comes to the criminal justice system. Sentences are of some of the highest in the entire country and are especially harsher to people of colour. Fox and her husband took the fatal and desperate decision to rob a bank in a bid to support their business and family. This drastic choice took Fox’s husband away from his family and for 2 decades, Fox spent time trying to get her husband out of jail. The thing that moved me the most about this documentary was her sons; four beautiful, smart and driven men who grew up without a father. It made me wonder how proud Fox must be of her kids and to see her fight for her husband and remain loyal to him is enough love to last two lifetimes.
Time is available to watch on Amazon Prime now.
Score: 10/10
The Departed (2006) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
Throughout this two and a half hour film I was wondering how they had managed to get Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg to do a film together. And the answer is that this epic and high profile movie was directed by the infamous Martin Scorsese. It’s a mystery why I hadn’t seen this film sooner, seeing as it was a huge hit during its release making a staggering $291 million worldwide during its release. This is definitely DiCaprio’s best film (next to Revolutionary Road and The Revenant) and his performance was incredibly punchy and strong throughout. Everyone in this film was top class and the dialogue fitted well with each character with a natural story progression throughout. A top notch, Hollywood, must watch film.
Score: 10/10
Murder by Numbers (2002) as seen on Amazon Prime
Tumblr media
One of Ryan Gosling’s earliest films follows two high school students committing a sadistic murder simply to see just how it feels. Detective Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock) is put on the case to solve the murder and quickly pieces the case together, leading her to Richard Haywood (Ryan Gosling) and Justin Pendleton (Michael Pitt) two students at the same high school. I wouldn’t say this film was bad, however the ending played a big part in the overall quality of the film. It had a good pace and characters, however the ending definitely let down the film for it was rushed and unaligned to the rest of the film. Ryan Gosling’s performance at the tender age of 22 was pretty decent and definitely stated to everyone else his ability as an actor for years to come.
Score: 7/10
All Good Things (2010) as seen on Amazon Prime
Tumblr media
As you can tell by now, I went on a Ryan Gosling whip this month. All Good Things is the true story of David Marks (Ryan Gosling), whose wife Katie (Kirsten Dunst) disappears and still to this day, has never been found. Marks was the prime suspect in the disappearance case but was never found guilty and lives a free man. Even though the story was interesting and the performances good, the fact this is a Weinstein Company Film made it hard to watch, especially with the totally unnecessary nudity and sex scenes that put Kirsten Dunst at its forefront. The film lacked a clear resolution and was left completely open ended like the case of Katie Marks, which is understandable, however not when it comes to making a good film.
Score: 6/10
Borat (2006) as seen on Amazon Prime
Tumblr media
After finding the second Borat film to be highly entertaining, I decided to watch the first one and was certainly not left disappointed. The first Borat film introduces us to Kazakstan reporter Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen) and his first visit to America, whilst taking in all the americanisms to report back to his own country. Soon his pursuit turns to Pamela Anderson whose doing a book signing across in California. The comedy has many jaw dropping moments and sees Cohen above and beyond the boundaries of comedy to bring the character of Borat to life.
Score: 10/10
Boy Erased (2018) as seen on Sky Cinema
Tumblr media
If there’s one film worth watching on this list, it’d be Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased. This film is the product of a real understanding of film language and the ability to make a beautiful and heart felt story. Edgerton is a well known actor, but has taken time to go behind the camera as well as in front of it in this Golden Globe nominated picture starring the likes of Lucas Hedges, Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman, Troye Sivan, Xavier Dolan and Joe Alwyn. Like HELLO if that cast isn’t making you immediately turn off this site right now to find Boy Erased, then I don’t know what will. The film based on a true story follows Jared Eamons (Lucas Hedges) and his time spent at a gay conversion centre with fellow homosexuals Gary (Troye Sivan) and Jon (Xavier Dolan). Jared’s father (Russell Crowe) is a pastor he and his wife (Nicole Kidman) take their religion rather seriously, which is why Jared has been forced to seek help for his sexuality. It’s a hard concept to swallow, especially in this day and age when most parents, religious or not, are starting to become more acceptable of their children’s sexuality. This film exposes the reality beyond that and how some parents feel their child is damaged by something completely normal and feel the need to seek help for it. Boy Erased is made with sensitivity and beautiful acting from an a class cast. All round, it’s a perfect film.
Score: 11/10
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) as seen on Amazon Prime
Tumblr media
I was a little confused starting this film to see it in Swedish, as I thought I was watching the David Fincher film of the same title. However, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was original a book and the first adapation of it for film was directed by Niels Arden Oplev, two years before Fincher made his version, starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. However, the fact that this version was in Swedish didn’t detract from the thrilling story spun onto screen. The three hour movie follows a journalist whose been hired to solve the mystery of a missing girl who is part of a high profile family. A young female hacker who once hacked the journalist and practically ruined his career, joins him along the way and the pair of them uncover a long string of untold secrets that see blood being split amongst numerous women. It’s one of the best thrillers I’ve ever seen and a must watch if you enjoyed Fincher’s version.
Score: 10/10
Still Alice (2014) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
A highly anticipated film on my part, Still Alice is an arresting and moving film about a mother struggling with on set Alzheimers. Julianne Moore scooped up a Best Actress Award at the Academy Awards in 2015, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for her performance as Dr Alice Howland and her battle with Alzheimers at the age of 50. Kristen Stewart plays her daughter and Alec Baldwin her husband and their performances are equal to Julianne Moore’s. Overall, this was a touching piece that had soooo much depth to it and yet carried a satisfying simplicity throughout it.
Score: 10/10
Enemy (2013) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
I heard about Enemy’s synopsis via a YouTube video and was throughly excited to watch it on hearing it was directed by Denis Villeneuve, a master director when it comes to thrillers and sci fi films. Even though Enemy was difficult to fully interpret, I still enjoyed the story and performance Jake Gyllenhaal brought to the table as a man who meets another man that looks exactly like him. There’s some pure mind fuckery that plays throughout the film as you’re left questioning who is this other man or if there are even two men at all. If anything, it’s an exploration of a man having a double life, wrapped up in some sinister secrets and tied between two women. All of Denis Villeneuve’s work is exceptional and Enemy is no different. A must watch for thriller lovers.
Score: 10/10
A Star is Born (2018) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born certainly wins the award for making me cry the most this month. The last version I saw of this film starred Judy Garland and James Mason and was centred around a musical actress and the rocky relationship she had with her actor husband. That 1954 version possessed a lot of brilliance and it was easy to compare it to the more modern version starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Who would’ve thought these two could be such an authentic on screen couple? The songs, the lyrics and the acting that these two brought to this picture was on another level, it was incredible from start to finish. Obviously the fact that this film had been done 4 times before honed the quality of the film, however Bradley Cooper’s direction and ability to bring out the best in Lady Gaga definitely makes this version of A Star is Born the best one yet. This directorial debut was nominated for 8 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Lady Gaga was handed the award for Best Music for a motion picture. Warning: you will cry whilst watching this or at least afterwards.
Score: 12/10
Sorry to Bother You (2018) as seen on Netflix
Tumblr media
Netflix certainly came through this month when it put Boots Riley’s fanatical dark comedy Sorry to Bother You on its streaming service. It’s honestly like nothing I’ve ever seen before and the innuendo and hidden messages within this film make it something that you can watch several times and never get bored of. Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield) gets a job as a telemarketer who gets promoted to a “power caller” and through pride and greed, ends up abandoning his ideologies and friends completely. The film speaks for the gentrification of Oakland, California and capitalistic society we live in today. There are many hidden messages amongst the film that at first are hard to decipher, but soon you realise these messages are as clear as day within our own society. Lakeith Stanfield stars alongside Tessa Thompson, Steve Yeun and Armie Hammer, not a cast you’d usually put together but one that certainly worked. Sorry to Bother You is highly entertaining and will definitely make you laugh out loud at points and have you questioning your laughter right after.
Score: 10/10
The Florida Project (2017) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
I’m starting to think that films made between 2017 and 2018 are some of the best ever made and the Florida Project falls into that. I heard about this film through one of my favourite actors and was glad for the recommendation as this film is one of the best I’ve seen all year. The colours and character dynamics are strong and vivid throughout, as we follow the lives of people living on an apartment complex whilst speaking for the child poverty that plagues American society today. Willem Dafoe, who plays the complex’s handy man and security guard, even earned himself a Best Supporting Actor Award at the 2018 Academy Awards.
Score: 10/10
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind (2014) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
Usually I’d pass on a Charlie Kaufman film, seeing as they make no sense, however I felt that it was time I delved into this cult classic starring Kate Winslet, Jim Carrey, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood. It’s a really well made film with a clear and distinct message to it that’s represented in some phenomenal filmmaking techniques. The plot line of this film follows a man trying to erase a past lover and his memories of her get wiped away physically before your eyes on screen. This film is certainly a conversation starter and one I’d recommend to just about anyone.
Score: 9/10
Moonrise Kingdom (2012) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
Wes Anderson’s wonderful mind is depicted in this endearing narrative about two children running away from home. This has to one of Wes Anderson’s most iconic films and next to The Grand Budapest Hotel, it’s definitely one of the films you think of when you think of Anderson’s work. His work is known for having well rounded stories, beautiful shots and A List casts, with Moonrise Kingdom being no expection as Anderson manages to squeeze Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Jason Schwartzman, Harvey Kietel and a young Lucas Hedges into this film. If you’ve seen any of Wes Anderson’s work and not Moonrise Kingdom, get on it now. No, seriously, now.
Score: 10/10
Jarhead (2005) as seen on DVD
Tumblr media
Sam Mendes’ war film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx translates the lives of US soldiers in Iraq onto screen and the brain washing their government has done to boost the importance of the US military and the service soldiers are doing to their country. Jake Gyllenhaal’s execution in this film is a reflection of his ability as a great actor. He always has this patient and gritty approach to his work that makes him addicting to watch on screen. There’s an entire video on YouTube about Jake Gyllenhaal’s eyes and the way they communicate his emotions on screen. This is certainly present in Jarhead, as the anger, frustration, disappointment and despair is held within Jake Gyllenhaal’s eyes throughout. Jarhead was originally a memoir written by a US solider named Anthony Swofford. The only thing I wasn’t a fan of was the open ended resolution to the film and the stagnant progression of Jake Gyllenhaal’s character. He literally didn’t achieve anything, which I suppose is the point of the film and how the honour that soldiers who went to Iraq were supposed to feel, is more of a fantasy than a reality.
Score: 9/10
Silence (2016) as seen on BBC iPlayer
Tumblr media
This film was truly summit else and a refreshing turn on genre from highly acclaimed filmmaker, Martin Scorsese. Silence certainly proved that he has the ability to be more sensitive with his films and can tells stories outside his usual New York mobster type movies. The film tracks the journey of two Portuguese missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) in the 17th Century who go to Japan looking for one of their mentors (Liam Neeson). However in this era, Christians faced persecution in Japan and were practically slaughtered for not following the country’s religion of Buddhism. The priests’ journey is perilous and heart rendering as they are forced to abandon their own religion in order to save their own lives and the lives of others. Despite the film being just over 160 minutes, it’s an inspiring story and one that is told in a tactful way. To believe this is a film is quite hard, as the accuracy of it makes it closer to reality than just a film itself.
Score: 8/10
Lynn + Lucy (2019) as seen on BBC iPlayer
Tumblr media
This film recently came out in UK cinemas and was put onto BBC iPlayer due to lockdown. I found it to be interesting and enjoyed the new perspective it gave to quite a simple story. Lynn and Lucy have been friends for almost their entire lives, and when Lucy’s baby boy dies in unexplained circumstances, it drives a wedge between her relationship with Lynn, as people in their neighbourhood accuse her of being a child murderer. Eventually, Lynn stats to believe the rumours herself, leaving her best friend behind and favouring the opinions of those who hardly know her. A great debut and British film, Lynn + Lucy is profound story of friendship.
Score: 8/10
Revolutionary Road (2008) as seen on Netflix
Tumblr media
Revolutionary Road has a metric score of 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, which I find quite offensive as the film nearly falls into the “thanks but no thanks” category of films. Directed by Sam Mendes and starring Kate Winslet alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, I don’t see what’s not to like. I only clocked halfway through the film why DiCaprio had been cast with Kate Winslet (Titanic, duh) and it made their on screen chemistry more prominent for me. I always say this about EVERY SINGLE Leonardo DiCaprio film I watch, but his performance in this was unreeeaaal. His character went somewhere intense and never returned, making the hardship on screen 10 times more powerful. There’s a scene where him and Winslet’s character are in a full blown argument and DiCaprio’s rage was on another level. Incredibly authentic and honest, Revolutionary Road showcases a wonderful example of when two masterful actors come together to make something great.
Score: 10/10
Hillbilly Elegy (2020) as seen on Netflix
Tumblr media
Hillbilly Elegy recently got torn to shreds by critics as it was released on Netflix the other week, and I half agree with what most are saying about it, but also feel there’s unnecessary criticisms about this film. The film is based on a memoir of a Yale Law student, J.D Vance (Gabriel Basso) who comes from rough beginnings and ends up building the life he so desired from a young age. His mother (Amy Adams) is a destructive drug addict who’s moods change frequently so that she’s constantly at war with her own mother (Glenn Close) and two children (Haley Bennett and Gabriel Basso). The story follows J.D’s return to his home town to claim his mother from a hospital after she over dosed on heroin. The only problem is, he has an interview with a law firm from Washington the following morning and has to choose between taking care of his mother and landing his dream job. Sounds pretty intriguing, right? And it truly is. The film is laced with conflict and great performances from everyone, however critics have blasted this film with hate, saying that it doesn’t ring true to the entire American experience of living in poverty, without healthcare and enough money to bring food to the table. The fact that J.D made it to Harvard and now works for a successful enterprise somehow detracts from his struggle as a child, which I think is complete BS. I think this film should be taken for more face value than as a political story. It’s a straight talking, rags to riches tale that proves with hard work and dedication, you can transform your struggles into success. One critic had the audacity to say that “Selling out your origins is a kind of white trash cosplay because you were lucky enough to get out”. The irony of this is that the critic herself is white and it suggests had JD been a person of colour, it’d made a better film, which isn’t the kind of world where I want to live in when stories of people of colour are used as poverty porn rather than something to enjoy or learn from. My only criticism of this film would be the pace of conflict within the film and how things went from 0-100 waaay too quickly. This can happen in real life, but on screen it tends to look sloppy and rushed.
Score: 9/10
Tumblr media
And that’s it! A rather short list for this month, but as the year draws to a close, I’m just really excited for the new films hopefully hitting screens next year. Seen you soon!

Marlon is a Doodie Head
Summary: Sophie writes a letter to her twin sister Minnie to process everything that has happened.
Word Count: 1000+
Read on AO3:
Start from the beginning of the series: here
Sophie sat alone in the sleeping room the girls had been using since they came to Ericson Farm. She’d been feeling agitated in the past few days ever since Marlon and Mitch had returned from the hunting cabin. Thankfully both of them had possessed the good sense to mostly keep their distance from the girls, staying in the barn and busying themselves with chores. Still, the fact that they were just a building away had Sophie’s skin crawling whenever she thought of it. Some nights she could still feel Marlon’s hands as he held her down underneath that quilt. The day he’d arrive back at the farm, she’d noticed that the broken nose she’d given him had healed crooked. She was glad to know he’d always carry that mark as a reminder of what he’d done.
Sitting at the desk by the window, Sophie had a quill pen and some paper before her. She was doing what she always did on a weekly basis: writing a letter to her twin sister Minnie. This would be the fourth letter in a row that remained unsent, tucked beneath her bed until one day she had access to a post office once more. By now news of what had happened must have reached her sister. Sophie was sure Minnie must be frantic. Perhaps she had even considered travelling back West to find Sophie herself. Not that there was any way into the valley until the end of spring. For now, the letters served as an outlet for Sophie’s emotions, a way for her to feel that she still had a voice of her own amidst all the turmoil.
Minnie,
Marlon and Mitch came back today. I wished they had stayed away longer. The only thing that makes my anger at their return more bearable is how happy it made the little boys. A.J., Willy and Tenn have been practically clinging onto their legs at all times since they returned. It’s clear how much they missed them, and Marlon and Mitch seem to feel the same. The whole thing makes me upset that I’m watching these events play out from captivity. If I had come here under different circumstances, I think I would have truly enjoyed my time at Ericson Farm.
Some loud cries from outside had Sophie glancing out the window. Willy, Louis and Aasim had circled a tree and were trying to talk Garbage, Willy’s possum, out of it. The possum seemed unimpressed by their pleas, hissing down at them menacingly. The scene brought a small smile to Sophie’s face. Things certainly weren’t dull here. There was always something going on. Sophie continued her letter.
How is your flatmate doing? I’m glad you were able to find someone so soon after moving out East.  From what I’ve heard so far, Renata sounds lovely. I hope I’ll get to meet her someday when
Sophie suddenly laid down her quill. When what? When she escaped from this place and headed East herself? How would she get there? The original plan had been to take food, clothes and other supplies from home and head out from there, paying for a train to take her East. Once her parents rescued her from this place though, they’d likely never let her out of their sight. Marlon had ruined any chance of slipping away.
Her mind wandered to the argument they’d had before Marlon ran off. God, she wished she’d thrown those chamber pots at him when she’d had the chance. Claiming that he just wanted her to be free to make her own decisions and that was why he’d taken her? Did this look like freedom to him? If Marlon had really wanted to help her, he should have snuck her out to the train station, not some snowed in farm in the middle of nowhere. If he’d bought her train ticket and bid her farewell, then she would have believed his motives were selfless. From there she could have rode the train all the way to Boston and…
And then what? The thought rankled Sophie, worming its way deeper into her mind. I never really thought that far ahead, did I? A week away from fleeing East and I didn’t have any idea what I’d do when I got there. Minnie would have let her stay at her place for as long as she needed. Living with her and Renata honestly sounded like it would be a lot of fun. But what would Sophie do in the hours Minnie was off working at university? Sit around and make art, but to what end? She hadn’t been able to get a scholarship to any universities out in Boston like Minnie had. Would she try to sell her art out on the streets?
A worse possibility suddenly entered Sophie’s mind. What if the scandal caused by my fleeing the arranged marriage had spread to the East coast and affected Minnie? Could she have lost her scholarship over something like that? Prestige was everything to institutions. Housing her runaway sister, while not illegal, could have ended up ruining the life Minnie had made for herself out there. Would I just have been a burden if I’d done as I planned?
The hissing had grown louder outside. Sophie looked down to see that the boys had enlisted Violet’s help. She had joined Willy in climbing up the tree to reach Garbage. Now the two siblings were trying to corner the possum in such a way that would force it to jump down into Louis’ coat that he and Aasim were holding out. A chuckle escaped Sophie’s lips. What a wild plan. She had half a mind to go out there and join them. She wanted to finish this letter though. She returned her quill to the paper.
I hope I’ll get to meet her someday when times are better. I’m not sure exactly how I would have wrangled my way out of that joke of a marriage our parents had set up for me. I know your prospects weren’t much better when they were looking for matches for you. I’m proud of you for finding a way to escape all that nonsense and still stay within the family’s good graces. If only my art skills had proved strong enough to join you out there. We could have attended university together.
Sophie envisioned what her days would have looked like within Boston. Maybe she would be able to sell enough paintings to make ends meet and get a place of her own. If need be, she’d distance herself from Minnie, at least until she had finished her studies at university, so none of the consequences of her running away would reach her sister. It seemed like a somewhat lonely existence, living alone with only her art to sustain her. She’d miss all her friends in Richmond: Brody, Ruby, Clem, Prisha…
A high-pitched scream came from below. Sophie looked down to find that the possum had successfully been driven down from the tree but had not landed in Louis’ jacket as planned. Instead it had landed upon Louis’ head, tangling its feet in his dreadlocks and hissing in an angry panic. Louis didn’t seem to be faring much better, running about with his arms flailing wildly and screaming for help. His siblings weren’t having much luck calming him or Garbage down.
She just had to capture this. Pulling out another piece of paper, Sophie began sketching out the scene before her. She tried to capture the heat of the moment, the way the possum’s eyes bulged in anger and Louis’ mouth was open wide in fear. It was certainly a picturesque moment. When Sophie had finished, she couldn’t help but giggle. Perhaps she’d gift the sketch to Louis later. He’d commented earlier on how lovely her art was when he’d spoken with her in the kitchen as she drew with Tenn. Her doodle complete, Sophie returned to the letter.
Perhaps it seems strange to say, Minnie, but I think once I leave here I’m going to miss it an awful lot. So many of the Ericsons are really nice. Of course you know Katjaa, but her husband and younger kids are kind too. I think you’d especially like Tenn. He has the makings of a great artist in him. You’d probably like Louis too. He’s a master at the piano. The two of you could do duets together. He’s played for us a couple times these past few nights. It’s a wonderful way to spend the evening.
Sophie paused in her writing. Now that she thought about it, she had something nice to say about almost all the Ericson kids. A.J. and Willy were a hoot while Omar was a complete sweetheart. She loved the soups he would make whenever someone was feeling under the weather. Violet had proved quite kind as she’d gotten to know her too. She was shy and soft-spoken for the first couple weeks, but over time Sophie had been able to pick up on her dry, biting humor as well as her softer, more thoughtful moments. Aasim was also pleasant to talk with too. She always learned something new when they spend time together. She had no idea how someone living on such an isolated, rural farm could be so well-read.
When I first came here, it seemed like the five months we’d be trapped at Ericson Farm would be a torture. When did everything become so pleasant? Sophie’s memories drifted through her mind, replaying the events of the last month. Everything had been so painful and heated at first, every word between the boys and the girls like pressing on an open wound. But one by one, the siblings had asked for the girls’ forgiveness, sincerely with no expectations of acceptance. Violet had been first and the easiest to forgive given the fact that Prisha had truly wanted to run away with her. Louis and Aasim were next, apologizing to the girls shortly after another avalanche as they attempted to excavate a path for the girls to return to Richmond had almost taken Louis’ life. Sophie knew Clementine had found the gesture hollow, but she’d appreciated the effort they had made to right their wrongs. After seeing the suffering they had willingly undertaken, she had a newfound respect for them and from there friendship had grown.
That only left Mitch and Marlon. Brody had spoken with Mitch the night the two boys had returned. From what she’d told the girls afterwards, it sounded like Mitch’s second apology was much more heartfelt and sincere. Being up at the hunting cabin for weeks had given him time to sort out his thoughts and truly understand his actions. If I hadn’t gone up to the room that night, would Marlon have said the same sorts of things to me? Would I have accepted an apology like that?
The first time Sophie had met Marlon, she’d found his candor and friendliness charming. The entire time he was trying to get a chance to dance with her, Sophie could see how much he wanted to have even a moment with her, and when their hands finally met and they got to dance for those few happy minutes, she’d found herself having the best time she’d ever had at a barn-raising. Talking with Marlon was easy, natural. She’d wished the day could go on and on so they could have as much time together as possible.
Now that was all gone. Marlon couldn’t be trusted ever again. He’d shown his true colors and how selfish a person he really was deep down. But if I was willing to listen to all the others. Should I at least give him that chance? What he’d said to her the day they’d fought had been true. Her plan of escape was shoddy. It took only seconds for the whole thing to fall apart. If Sophie had stayed in Richmond, she would have been married off to a man old enough to be her grandfather and if she’d left she’d have been dooming herself to a life with no prospects, perhaps dragging Minnie down with her in the process. Neither option was good, but for Marlon’s solution to be… this? Deception, kidnapping, brute force? She wished he’d spoken to her that night instead of tossing her on the floor of that carriage. Maybe then they could have worked something out together. Does that mean if he’d asked I would have run away with him after all? Sophie’s mind bristled at the thought. That was ridiculous.
The screaming from outside had finally stopped. The Ericson siblings were nowhere to be seen. Apparently they’d found something else besides possum wrangling to occupy their time. Sophie stood up, stretching her hands above her head. She needed a break from letter writing. She could finish later. It wasn’t like she would be able to send the letter anytime soon anyway. Spending all this time alone was putting strange thoughts in her head. She needed some company.
Sophie headed for the door, shutting it quietly behind her. Maybe Katjaa or the little boys needed help with something or the girls were back from their outside chores. With so many people around, there was sure to be plenty of things to do. As she descended the stairs, Sophie let herself land on one final thought. I’ve heard the others apologies and things are the better for it. If Marlon wants to talk one last time to clear the air, I won’t say no.

Natasha Romanoff X Carol Danvers - WORK OUT
Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow X Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel Fanfic
Synopsis: Carol has agreed to stay on earth for a little while to work with The Avengers to deal with a new enemy threat. She seems to have caught Natasha’s eye in particular
Warnings: Language, smut
Words: I dunno, a few. Maybe 1000. Maybe more
So it turns out peer pressure works. I errr .., yeah I’ve kind of had a half a skeleton of this story sat in my drafts for a little while and I wasn’t sure about posting it but it seems the people want it. I reblog one (1) carolnat fic and I have literally never had so many messages in one night for one thing. I haven’t been able to reply to all of them because I didn’t wanna spam everyone but believe me when I say YOU HAVE BEEN HEARD. Please please let me know what you think of this, I was super unsure about posting this, so if you enjoy it. Let me know! Behold: CarolNat
Ps. And do not even COME AT ME AGAIN about Carol being a bottom. It’s a fact, let’s move on
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Carol had been sure her tactics to get the other woman’s attention for the last couple of hours had been working. She was almost positive that she had seen darkened green eyes follow her around the room as she went about her work out routine in the gym. She was also certain that she had felt someone watching her while she lifted weights for the last fifteen minutes and her suspicions were confirmed as she bent down to pick up her towel and caught the eye of the red head on the other side of the room, daring to maintain eye contact as the other woman wet her lips before turning away.
It was impossible for Carol not to feel a little smug that her efforts hadn’t gone unnoticed, slinging her towel over her shoulder before making her way out of the gym and heading for the showers. She hadn’t gone to work out with the intention of flaunting herself so openly. However when she walked in and saw Natasha training alone as well, it had seemed like much too good an opportunity to miss.
Granted this was probably not the best of plans; to continue with what had been branded by both women as a ‘terrible idea’. It was messy and thoughtless and it only added another account to an already extensive list of complicated situations Carol’s impulsiveness has gotten her into in the past. But stopping herself from acting in the moment had never been Carol’s strong suit and with the mission at hand getting harder by the day, sources of comfort were in short supply.
A small part of her hoped that the other woman wouldn’t follow her. That it would just make everything easier if the opportunity was simply taken away from her and she wouldn’t have to resist alone. Throwing her work out gear onto the bench and retrieving a fresh towel from her locker, Carol wondered if it would just be for the best if Natasha ignored her this time and she was left to deal with things on her own.
Was that what she wanted though? Definitely not.
Her mind was plagued with memories of the times Natasha had helped her deal with the toll this mission was taking. Teeth sinking into her shoulders followed by lips sucking and teasing darkened marks into her flesh. Carol bunched her eyes closed and gave her head a shake before stepping onto the tiles beneath the shower head, pointlessly trying to banish the images from her brain. But still they kept coming. Hardened nipples pressing into her back and a hot breath on the back of her neck as slender fingers slipped between her legs and were plunged inside of her. Slamming her hand against the nozzle on the wall, Carol pushed out a long breath and looked down as the water began to fall over her. She rubbed at her eyes and then over her forehead to push the wet hair out of her face as she attempted to compose herself and just think straight. She was supposed to be here to help The Avengers. This was work and that meant being professional and making sure the job gets done. Natasha was a team mate and getting too personal with co workers was always destined to end badly, never mind sleeping together.
After several minutes of pep talk, Carol finally felt like she could feel her heart rate returning to normal, thoughts of naked, writhing flesh and moans of pleasure no longer consuming her mind. It was a bad idea.
Her stomach dropped when she heard the faint sound of a footstep on the wet tiles behind her, her heart beginning to hammer again as she sensed the presence of someone close to her.
“We shouldn’t.” muttered Carol quietly, her statement sounding weak enough that it must have taken all of her effort just to say it.
There was no response, but she heard someone taking a few steps closer until eventually she felt the touch of someone else’s skin graze lightly against her back.
“Hands ... against the wall.”
Carol huffed, leaning forward enough so that she could rest her forehead against the tiles and look down at the ground. She tried to focus on the water going down the drain in an attempt to ground herself and not succumb to what was about to happen.
“Nat, really ... this isn’t a good idea.”
Her eyes fell closed as she felt soft lips press a lingering kiss to the back of her neck followed by words spoken lowly into her ear, “I said hands on the wall Danvers.”
Pushing out a shaky breath, Carol shook her head from side to side against the wall of the shower as she tried to ignore the burning heat of arousal that was taking over her body. She knew it was pointless, already sure she was soaked just from thinking about what Natasha was capable of doing to her. There was no use fighting what she was feeling, her body already acting on impulse as she raised her arms to rest her hands either side of her head on the wall. She could practically hear the smirk on Natasha’s face when she spoke again,
“Feet apart.”
This time she didn’t hesitate before doing as she was told, shuffling her feet along the ground as she pushed out a shaky breath. The feeling of Natasha’s fingers sinking into her hips to hold her in place only served in making her lose the last of her resolve.
“That’s it.” said Natasha quietly, giving the inside of one of Carol’s feet a gentle kick, “Bit further princess.”
Carol swallowed thickly as she did as she was asked, another wave of arousal washing over her at Natasha’s words. She could only shiver and release a low moan as fingers skimmed over the inside of her thigh and she felt the other woman’s breath hit her ear.
“You still think we shouldn’t?” Asked Natasha, her tone taunting as she dragged her fingers a little further up Carol’s leg, leaning forward enough that her breasts were pressed to the blonde’s back.
Carol laughed quietly, the hairs on the back of her neck beginning to stand on end as Natasha’s contact got heavier on her skin, “I still think it’s a bad idea.”
Humming in response, Natasha pressed her lips to the side of Carol’s neck, covering her skin with bites and open mouthed kisses as her hand reached the top of Carol’s inner thigh and paused.
“So you think I should stop?” Asked Natasha quietly, teeth scraping against Carol’s shoulder as she brushed a finger lightly over the length of her pussy.
Carol could only moan in response, fingers wiggling against the tiles as she tried to stop herself from just giving in entirely and pushing down onto Natasha’s hand.
“I asked you a question.” Natasha paused to press a kiss underneath the other woman’s ear, “Do you want me to stop? I was under the impression I had to follow Captain’s orders.”
“God I hate that you’re so good at this.” groaned Carol, her tone only half serious. Already she felt like she had never been more turned on in her life, sure that evidence of her arousal had to be dripping down her thighs at this point. Natasha’s fingers were continuing to move slowly, occasionally dipping lower just enough to graze her clit or tease her entrance before moving back, and each touch was causing Carol’s hips to move involuntarily in a bid for more.
“No you don’t.” Teased Natasha, finding it harder and harder to mask her own enjoyment as she felt how wet Carol was already. “You want it or not?”
Blowing out a sharp breath, Carol turned her head so she could just about see the red head out the corner of her eye, “Yes, shit Nat just fuck me already.”
The last thing Carol heard was a low chuckle from Natasha before the pulsing of blood in her ears blocked out everything as she felt the other woman push two fingers forcefully inside of her. If it hadn’t been for her hands and forehead pressed against the tiles, she was positive she would have toppled over at the overwhelming sensation of pleasure that took over her as Natasha started to fuck her. The sounds of her moans already deafening as they echoed off the bathroom tiles but Carol couldn’t bring herself to care as Natasha buried her fingers inside of her pussy again.
Each thrust and curl of her fingers felt incredible and Carol was struggling to think of any reason at all why she would ever have tried to fight this. A loud groan of Natasha’s name sounded through the showers as the red head slipped her other hand around Carol’s waist towards her breast so that was able to pinch at one of her nipples, lips and teeth and tongue continuing their assault on the blonde’s skin.
Carol’s fingers scratched and scraped against the tiles in the hope of finding something, anything to hold onto as Natasha dipped her other hand lower so she was able to circle over her clit. She had found herself completely trapped between Natasha’s body and the wall that she was near enough being pounded into, grateful for something holding her in place as her legs started to tremble beneath her.
“Do you wanna come for me?” Asked Natasha tauntingly, sinking her teeth into Carol’s ear lobe and pressing harder against her clit as the other woman merely moaned and nodded her head eagerly. Her head was already spinning, body beginning to tingle as each push of Natasha’s fingers brought her closer to the edge. She was desperately hoping Natasha would just allow her to come so easily, not failing to forget previous encounters when the red head would have her begging for it. But another curl of her digits as she circled over her clit again told her that this time, she wasn’t going to be disappointed, “Come on then pretty girl, I wanna hear how good I make you feel.”
Allowing herself to be so desperately at someone’s mercy was a new experience for Carol but the most bizarre thing about it all was how totally and completely she was into it. The almost mocking tone Natasha would use with her sometimes would send a shiver down her spine and it only made her moan out louder in pleasure. This, she had discovered, usually spurred the red head on more and would result in Carol getting exactly what she wanted. It seemed this time would be no different, the blonde groaning out loud in pleasure as Natasha slammed her fingers into her harder and she could feel her orgasm beginning to build in the pit of her stomach.
“Oh my god, fuck-“ Carol dropped one of her hands from the wall as she felt herself tightening around the firm brush of fingertips inside of her, using it instead to grip Natasha’s wrist both for something to help her keep upright and to make sure there was no risk of her stopping. “I’m so close Nat, just a little...”
She didn’t get a chance to finish her sentence as another buck of her hips against the other woman’s hand was enough to push her over the edge, Natasha’s fingers angled perfectly to hit the spot that made her see stars. The red head released a low groan of satisfaction as she felt Carol’s pussy clench around her, a loud moan of her name sounding throughout the shower as her body shuddered and she came hard.
Allowing her to ride out her high, Natasha didn’t stop the movement of her hand completely, slowing her pace as she rested her forehead against Carol’s back and used the other hand to stroke gently over her hip.
Carol was still attempting to regulate her breathing when she spoke, barely stuttering out words between pants for breath, “Okay we really need to stop doing this.”
“You said that last time.” Muttered Natasha, lazily withdrawing her fingers and unable to suppress a grin at the jerk of the hips the movement caused, “And the time before that.”
She was unable to hold back a laugh, gulping in air in a bid to catch her breath, “I mean it this time.”
“You sure about that?” Asked Natasha, raising her hand to the top of the other woman’s back and pressing her index finger between her shoulder blades. Carol tilted her head from side to side, resisting the urge to squirm under the red head’s touch as she dragged her finger slowly down her spine, “Cause I think it feels like you want me to fuck you again.”
The noise that left Carol’s lips was closer to a growl than anything. She so badly wanted to do the right thing, but in a post orgasmic daze and with the feeling of Natasha’s fingers buried inside of her still so fresh, it was impossible to do anything but arch herself into the woman behind her. Who was to say this was so wrong anyway?
Turning on the spot, Carol grabbed Natasha’s face in her hands and pulled her body flush against her own, “I’m being stupid right?”
Natasha smirked, “Totally stupid.”
“Thought so.” Carol nodded her head frantically, tugging the other woman’s lips to meet her own and mumbling into her mouth, “Just keep fucking me until I stop being stupid then.”
Her smirk broadening, Natasha dipped her hand to plunge her fingers eagerly back inside of Carol, “Whatever you say Captain.”
