In honour of hitting 100,000 words on the ao3 fic, here’s one of my favourite snippets from Chapter 30:

She thought she knew what she wanted until the first ultrasound. He set her up with a private doctor in a private clinic and sat by her side, holding her hand. He had tried not to look excited, but she knew; she could feel it when they were in the car, she could see it on his face whenever he looked at her, touched her, kissed her. He was doing his best to hold it all in for her, and that meant the world to her. His excitement seemed unwavering, until they were actually in the exam room, and she was naked from the waist down and her feet were propped up on padded rests. He nearly passed the fuck out when the doctor pulled out an 8-inch wand, rolled a condom over it and lubed it up.

‘That’s going where now?’ He had asked, eyes bulging, as if an 8-inch wand wasn’t what got them sitting in the doctor’s office in the first place.

‘See, that’s what we should have done.’ She had said condescendingly, pointing to the condom. Bruce went pale when she barely flinched, and at the complete nonchalant attitude she was showing. He squeezed her hand, holding it to his forehead as he bowed his head, trying not to think about the fact she was hooked up to a machine via her vagina and didn't seem to care. For a technophobe, she was surprisingly calm.

i think my issue with casting the beatles movie and why i want to cast unknowns or up-and-comers is that i want a movie that explores the beatles and their relationships to each other on a simple, human level. i don't want them to be mythological heroes. i don't want Academy Award Nominee Paul Mescal In A Stunning Turn As Tortured Genius John Lennon. i want to watch a movie about four lads from liverpool navigating fame and friendship and everything that goes with it. i want them to be regular people.

Angel fits into a very specific breed of respectable old men in civic duty occupations and a 10 pm bedtime that only the trashiest most eventful of youths followed by a decade of burnout can produce. You can catch a glimpse of that if you hand him any 60s manufacture gun or rifle and watch him perk up in unnervingly fond recognition. Or put him in a situation where the opportunity to craft a molotov presents itself. Never quite kicked the pyromaniac tendencies either. Can still hotwire cars, but simply chooses not to.

He spent some 20 odd years drifting about. Back before he was Angel and even before he was officially Nikolai by ID, he called himself Арсен - Arsenic. Used to live out of rented rooms and fit all of his belongings into a backpack. Travelled Europe by foot and stolen cars, made a living off the maddest odd jobs. Got briefly sucked into petty organized crime before flying the coop, erasing his footsteps along the way. Acted out his vigilante dreams the entire way through until he got caught and met his husband (funny story).

He's a reasonable and dependable man these days, more than he ever has been, but the evidence of a bygone life is still stamped on him and sometimes it shows. Don't trust him around fire...
