“Father! Father, look!” Diluc held the brilliantly new spark of pyro in his small hand, his vision as bright and beautiful as the smile on the child’s face. “Look, Father, I did it!”
“There we are! That’s my boy! Well done, well done,” Crepus’ amazed laugh was loud and booming. Echoing across the grapevines.
Diluc’s giggles tangled in his own. Warm and light just like the gift the gods have given him.

Omega retreat chapter 7
Pairing : Alpha Bucky x Reader
Warnings : R18, eventual Smut, uncomfortable situation, heat cycles, scenting, something is amiss
Word count : 1891
Masterlist
Summary : As an unmarked and lonely omega you find a flyer for a service called The Omega Retreat.
You are paired with a compatible alpha to spend your heat or just a week at a luxurious cabin at a forest resort. Amenities and Utilities included. Enjoy the beautiful scenery, fresh air, as well as the company of an alpha of your choosing. What could possibly go wrong?
Your lips tightened together, not uttering a single word in response to this stranger as your scent became tainted with a new sense of unease.
“What, are you shy, baby?” He leaned in towards you, breaking further through your comfort zone. “You can call me Mr. Rumlow, if I could only get your name in return…”
“Sir?” The small chirp of another staff member rang through the air, leaving you to finally breathe as his gaze was stolen. “I have to ask you to leave the other clients alone, please.”
“I’m just saying ‘hello’ to the lovely lady. Isn’t that right, sweetheart?”
“Sir, I will not ask again.” The expression on her face became all the more sharp, just as her tone did. The unwanted Alpha clicked his tongue in annoyance before trudging past her, knocking against her shoulder in the process.
He regained composure almost immediately, turning back to you with a plastic smile. “Come with us, ma’am. Your partner was called, and your transportation is ready.”
“Really?” It was a relief to be able to leave this atmosphere, but it was a lot sooner than you’d initially thought. You hadn’t even seen Bucky yet.
The other beta shittered around her, grabbing your bags back up as she helped pull you from the chair. You hoped the reason for the hasty retreat wasn’t due to your increasingly potent pheromones laying thick in the air around the room.
"Yes, ma’am, this way.” Both of the staff members quickly ushered you towards the doors at the other side of the building, where they had transport waiting for you. Sadly, it wasn’t fast enough, as another commotion broke out at another desk as you passed by.
It had been an angry couple, and soon voices began to rise as another large Alpha turned his ire towards the staff member.
“You gave me a beta bitch!!” His scream echoed around the room and was met with a shrill response of “grow up, you pig” from the lady at his side.
They barely had you out the door as the loudest part of the conversation rang through the air as he shouted back, “You fucking lied to me!”
The door clicked shut behind you, and you stood by the glass, nearly shaking as the smaller beta loaded your bag into the waiting vehicle. The female was at your side, soothing you with her neutral scent as he squeezed your shoulder.
“I’m very sorry for the inconvenience; this doesn’t normally happen.”
“Is everything alright over there?” Your voice cracked, a jolt of fear shaking your knees. The aura of a raging alpha makes your inner Omega cower, twisting your belly until it makes you sick. It’s the sickness that terrified you the most, and you would have collapsed and curled into a ball on the floor if it hadn’t been for the sweet beta beside you.
“It’s nothing to worry about, ma’am. We’re an alpha and omega match service, but some Betas like to slip through the cracks, and it can make their potential partner a little upset.” She spoke so smoothly as she guided you into the car, and you curled into the seat without realizing you’d made it this far.
“Okay.” You spoke back meekly. You think that it sounds fair to be upset if someone lied like that, but it still seemed like an overreaction.
She held the door as she leaned in to speak, calming you further. “Your stay should be much better from here, ma’am.” With that last sentiment, she gently closed the door, and the door pulled away immediately.
The ride is quiet, shadowed by the large trees surrounding the thin road. You are very disheartened by the sour display, and the few red flags seem to draw up on the horizon. But your budding heat, along with the sight of the cabin in the distance, made your excitement bloom back to life.
The idea of finally meeting James made your body even hotter than it was when your heat crept from under your skin. You were almost there, and just maybe he’d be waiting for you at your little forest escape.
But, as the car pulled to a soft stop near the cabin’s entrance, there wasn’t anyone there to greet you.
“Where is..” you almost didn’t want to ask, your voice shrinking as you spoke.
The driver turned back to you, most likely anticipating your confusion. “We decided to bring you up a little early to make you more comfortable.”
“Oh.” Your shoulders sank as the little syllable left your shaking lip.
You didn’t want to cry, not here, but you didn’t mean to put any of the staff on edge over your own anxieties, let alone your heat.
The driver didn’t speak again to reassure you, choosing instead to get out of the car to secure your bags from the trunk. You followed suit slowly as they carried the luggage past the small porch and towards the door to let themselves inside.
The cabin was just as beautiful as you had seen in the advertisement. The kitchen was a georgeous oak with emerald green tiling, and the dining table sat at its side, past the island that sat beside its stove.
“Alright..” She spoke with a plastic smile, heavily rehearsed as it spread from cheek to cheek. “…so here’s the kitchen; the bedroom is shared with the den over by those beautiful windows; the bathroom and back down that hallway.”
She set your bags by the door before continuing with the small tour. “You chose the meal kits, which are stocked in the fridge alongside a selection of wine and spirits.”
They went over all the necessary amenities from top to bottom. They were quick to try and say their farewell, giving you a curt “If there are no other questions, then I’ll leave you to wait for your partner.”
“I..is there an emergency number? You know if anything happens.” You stuttered out before they could leave just yet. If anything happened and even your expectant Alpha couldn't help you, then you would need a lifeline.
You watched her take a thick swallow, nearly looking through you before finally answering. “Of course. There’s a phone by the bathroom and a list of office numbers beside it in case you need to reach us for anything. Plus, your phone should have coverage even out there.” She said everything with a wavering smile that you nearly didn’t notice.
Sadly, you were too anxious to think about it further, assuming your troubled scent was simply putting her on edge.
“Thank you.”
“No problem; have a nice day.” It was the last sentiment they gave before leaving and letting the door click closed behind them. Then it was quiet. A tranquil sort of quiet.
The soft rustle of the leaves as the wind gently swept through them was coupled with the chirping of small birds. Walking past the chair by your bag, you gravitated towards one of the wide windows.
The glass was cold against your skin as you pressed your fingers to it. Your heat is thrumming through your veins, shaking your body, and the slight chill from the window was very much welcome. You pushed away, wandering through the beautiful cabin.
The fridge was indeed well stocked, and you glanced over the possible meals the two of you could share. Getting to cook together was something you thought would be really fun, and Bucky seemed excited when you asked.
You weren’t a chef by any means, but you were no slouch when it came to making at least a nice meal, and now you get to make it for two.
Checking the cupboards, you find more food, wine, and liquor. It was all accompanied by necessary plates and cookware, as well as some dish soap and other emergency cleaning supplies. Nothing heavy-duty like bleach.
You have to do a double take at the expensive-looking scotch sitting beside the simple brands of wine you’d picked out. Bucky never discussed money or income with you, something you were too nervous to initially ask. However, looking back at the dark liquor, it seemed he may be used to the finer things in life.
You carefully closed the cupboard back up before wandering through to the den as you fanned at your warm skin. You tap your phone, still tucked away in your back pocket, before pulling it out to check the time.
You didn’t expect to be here so early, and you didn’t want to be left in a heated mess before he was able to arrive. You weren’t even supposed to check in for another hour, but you didn’t think the heat blooming along your skin was going to be as much of an issue for others as it was for you.
You sat back in one of the soft chairs, trying to shut your eyes to just relax. You thought about finally seeing your Alpha, growing more excited to finally see Bucky, when the roar of any engine broke through the peaceful silence.
You pushed up from the chair as the car stopped by the porch, and he stepped out.
He was taller than you thought he’d be; his long, thick legs were hugged snuggly by a pair of black jeans. He had his duffel bag in his hand and wore a loose red flannel that opened to show a gray tank top underneath. But, it was his shoulder-length brown hair that had you gawking. It was even more enticingly soft than the video and photos did justice to, and you just watched as he ran his fingers through the back of it to better shake it into place.
He finally turned away from the car as he shut the door, locking his ocean blue eyes on your little figure standing on the porch. He immediately breaks out into a smile, just another part of him that was far more breathtaking in person than in any of his pictures.
You slowly stepped down the small set of stairs. Part of you wanted to run and leap at him, but another part was still too weary to simply let you throw yourself into his arms. So you were left standing at that last step and calling out to him instead.
“Bucky.” Your voice was a wisp as you tried to find enough breath in your lungs to speak. He didn’t move as the car pulled away, giving you an equal look of awe and admiration.
His car had disappeared up the gravel road when he dropped his duffel bag to his side and opened his arms.
“Don’t I get a hug, Omega?” He spoke playfully, but with an actual need laying behind his words, as he had longed to hold you.
This was it. This was the moment you’d waited for. This was the man that may save you, that just might make that fear and pain go away. It was a lot to put on his shoulders and he hadn’t any knowledge of it.
After all the frustration, all the anxiety he was finally here in the flesh and standing just a few feet away. You only needed to leap forward and you’d be in his arms.
You propelled yourself off the porch, running down the steps, and throwing yourself right into his arms for a tight embrace.
“That’s more like it." He buried his nose into your hair and hugged you close, almost lifting you off the ground.
You took in his scent, which was thick like barrel-aged rum and horribly intoxicating. It made your knees turn to jelly, and your legs nearly wiggled out from under you. You had to tighten your arms around his neck for support, and his own squeezed at your waist.

Girl on Film | Perv!Eddie Munson x Best Friend Reader: Part 3
Summary: After days of not seeing or hearing anything from Eddie, you finally snap. When you confront him about your feelings, it’s not exactly what he had hoped to hear.
Warnings: angst, cursing, I’m just gonna go ahead and say 18+ minors dni mainly bc of what has happened before and that stuff gets briefly mentioned in here so… yeah lol
Word count: 2.9k
previous part | next part
A/n: I’m sorry this took a little longer than expected to get released! I’ve been a little busy and tbh at first I didn’t know where I wanted this story to go so that also slowed the whole process lol thank you guys for your continued love and support! You have no idea how much it truly means to me.. Enjoy! x
It’s Monday morning and Eddie slowly stirs awake. Stretching as much as he could, he turns his head over to look at the alarm clock. 6:45am. He then turns his head to the opposite side only to be met with the sight of your naked body. Your back facing him and the sheets covering just the lower half of you. Panic sets in before he has a chance to really take in the view. He starts to freak out as his questions from last night enter his mind once again.
He tries to convince himself that he’s just overreacting and that you must’ve genuinely felt the same way he did, right? If you didn’t, why would you do all of that with him? Why would you play along with the whole camcorder situation? He began to think that maybe it was just a spur of the moment thing for you. That maybe you just wanted to have fun with this and not get romantically involved. He also thought of how maybe you’d wake up and regret this whole weekend and then things would be forever changed between the two of you.
With every question of “what if?” or “why?” that crossed his mind, he knew one thing for sure. He did not want to stick around and find out. He couldn’t handle the possibility of rejection or the idea of losing you as his best friend. He needed to think things over before diving into that conversation with you. So, without a moments notice, Eddie does what he does best. He runs.
Or at least he tries too. He gently gets out of the bed, trying his best not to wake you and rushes to go take a quick shower. While he’s in the bathroom, you wake up to the sound of the water running. Still a little bit groggy, you slip on another oversized t-shirt since the one you had on yesterday was now torn in two thanks to a certain someone. You decided against wearing pants, not having the energy this morning to deal with putting them on. Plus, at this point, Eddie has seen you in a lot less, so you figured he wouldn’t have a problem with it.
You make your way to the kitchen in desperate need of something to drink. You pour yourself a glass of water and casually sip on it while having your back leaned against the counter. You hear the shower turn off and soon afterwards, the bathroom door opens. In such a hurry to leave, Eddie doesn’t even notice that you’re standing in the kitchen.
“Mornin’ Eddie, sleep well?”
“Jesus Christ!” He jumps at the sound of your voice. “I didn’t know you were awake,” he gives a nervous chuckle, “You scared the shit out of me.”
“I haven’t been up for long.. What’s got you up and ready to go out the door so early?”
“Uh…” Eddie pauses for a second, trying to find what to say. He doesn’t want to bring up the real reason he’s leaving, so he says the next thing that comes to mind. “School! Gotta head off the school, ya know, don’t wanna be late.”
You look at him and say with a raised eyebrow, “Since when did you, Eddie Munson, care about going to school, let alone getting there on time?”
He smiles softly at your comment, knowing that you had a good point.
“I figured dealing with the third go around of this shit, I might actually want to try for once before I end up graduating with Henderson’s class.”
You laugh. You know you’d never let that happen, but it was funny to picture him and Dustin posing for a photo together with their cap and gowns on holding their diplomas.
“Well before you go, do you want some breakfast? I can fix you something real quick. I know the stuff they serve in the cafeteria isn’t the best.”
Growing more anxious the longer he stands there, Eddie shakes his head, “N-no thanks. As much as I would love to, I don’t have the time. Still have to run home and change out of this,” he gestures to his sweats, “and you know how long it takes to get my whole get up on. At this rate, I’ll be lucky if I get there before the first bell rings.”
You try not to show a look of disappointment on your face. You wished he would stay a little longer, but you understood his reasons. If you were in his shoes, you’d want to do everything possible to make sure you didn’t have to repeat your senior year again too.
“Oh, well, I’ve got to start getting ready for work in a few anyway, so no biggie. Give me a call though afterwards, yeah? I’ll be back home this evening, probably around six.”
Eddie doesn’t say anything, just gives you a slight nod and walks out the door. Driving off in his van, he makes his way back home. Once there, he heads to his room and spots the camcorder still sitting in the same spot he left it. He really did plan on going to school, but after seeing that and being reminded once again how all of this got started, he decided to stay home. There was no way he could focus on any of his classes after that.
You started getting ready for work not long after Eddie left. Taking a quick shower yourself and changing into your uniform. You pulled your hair back to keep it out of your face and applied a light, natural makeup look. You weren’t one to really wear makeup to begin with, but being a waitress, it seemed to help get you better tips so you didn’t mind having to wear it while you were at work.
You worked at a small diner right on the edge of town, only a 15 minute drive from your place. It wasn’t the best job, but it paid the bills. It’s not like you didn’t enjoy it, you loved your coworkers and got along well with the regulars you had, but being on your feet for hours on end for most days of the week was exhausting.
Your work day was the same as always. A group of older gentlemen would always come in early for some breakfast which usually consisted of biscuits and gravy all while talking for hours, getting refill after refill of coffee. You gained a few more customers when lunch rush hit, but things never picked up until it came closer to dinner time. You’d always get busy around then, mainly having truckers stop by for a good hot meal after being on the road all day. You didn’t mind though, you loved hearing the stories they’d tell about the places they’ve been and things they’ve seen. It always helped make the work day go by a little faster.
When your shift came to an end, you made your way back home. Feet aching from the day, all you wanted was to get out of these clothes and go to bed. You didn’t even think about the fact that Eddie said he would call. All that was on your mind now was getting some much needed rest.
When Tuesday had came and gone and still no word from him, you started to wonder why Eddie hasn’t been back over or called. You didn’t really pay much mind to it, thinking he must’ve been exhausted like you were last night after playing his gig at the Hideout with the Corroded Coffin boys.
Wednesday was a different story though. That evening, you made your way over to Family Video to pick out movies for the sleepover this weekend. It was supposed to be at Eddie’s place this time, but after not hearing from him for days, you weren’t sure if he even wanted to have it. You walk in and was greeted by Robin who stood at the front counter.
“Hey, y/n! Picking out more movies for you and Eddie this weekend?”
“Yeah,” you say in an unsure tone, “I guess I am.”
“You guess? What’s that supposed to mean?”
You sigh and start to explain everything to her. Just the part of not hearing from Eddie in a while, she didn’t need to know the rest and you still hadn’t even talked about it with Eddie himself. It would feel wrong to discuss those things with another person before him, even if Robin was one of your closest friends.
“It’s just, I don’t know. I’m not sure if he wants to have the sleepover this weekend. After he left my place Monday morning for school, I haven’t heard from him since. I figured maybe he was tired from his gig last night, but I still haven’t heard anything from him today either. It’s just weird not seeing or hearing from him, ya know? He’s never done this before.”
“Wait, you said he left Monday morning for school?” She asks and you give her a nod. “Eddie wasn’t at school Monday. Like at all.”
“What?” You looked at her with confusion written all over your face.
Not at school? What does she mean not at school? Why would he say that’s why he had to leave your place so early and then not go? Maybe he was late getting there and she just didn’t see him.
Robin went on to explain, “Yeah. He borrowed my biology notes and was supposed to give them back to me at lunch, but he wasn’t there. I asked the guys at the Hellfire table if they’d seen him but they said he never showed up that morning.”
What the hell? Why didn’t he go? More importantly, why did he lie to you about going in the first place? Your blood started to boil at the thought of him lying to you. You had been friends forever, why would he feel the need to lie? You explained to Robin that you had to go, not getting the movies you had planned on picking up. You needed to get home to think about some things. What the fuck was Eddie’s problem?
Thursday evening rolled around and still no word. You finally decided to give him a call instead of waiting for him. You knew he should be home from school right now, if he even went this time, and he didn’t have band practice or anything like that. You reach for the phone and dial his number. After a few rings, a mans voice spoke on the line.
“Hello?” Wayne. You didn’t think he’d be home right now. He must’ve been getting ready to leave for work when you called.
“Hey, Uncle Wayne, is Eddie around?” You ask.
Wayne looks over at Eddie standing in the living room, signaling for him to say that he wasn’t there and couldn’t talk.
Wayne sighs before answering, “No, I’m sorry, sweetheart. He’s not here at the moment. I could take a message for him if you’d like though.”
There it was, another lie. Now he’s even getting other people to do it for him? Unbelievable.
“Just tell him to give me a call when he gets a chance, okay?” You tried to not sound frustrated, but Wayne could tell you were upset.
“Will do.” He hangs up the phone and looks up at Eddie once again.
“Boy, I don’t know what the hell is going on between you two, but whatever it is, not talking to her about it isn’t going to solve the problem.”
Eddie looks down at his feet, embarrassed that Wayne is lecturing him over something that he should’ve already taken care of.
“I know, Wayne, it’s just..” he tries to think of the best way to explain this to his uncle without having to go further into detail about it all, “things are just a bit..complicated right now, okay? I promise I’ll talk to her soon. I just need some time to think about things.”
Wayne takes the hint that Eddie doesn’t want to get into the subject of what’s going on and gives him a sympathetic look. Not really knowing what it was that was making things complicated between you both, but knew whatever it may be was causing his boy to be in misery.
Grabbing his jacket and getting ready to head out the door, he turns and with a sigh he says to Eddie, “Well, whatever it is, you guys have been friends all your lives. You’ll be able to get through it, okay? Don’t sweat it, kid.”
And with that he heads out the door, leaving Eddie to stew in his own thoughts about everything.
You on the other hand, were pissed. Outraged. Angry.
How could he lie to you like that? Why would he even do such a thing? And then ignore your call when you finally reach out to him?
No, you weren’t gonna have it. Eddie was going to talk to you face to face about this whether he liked it or not. It was something that needed to be done, and you knew exactly when to do it.
It was finally Friday, you had just finished your shift at work and was heading home to change and shower. Eddie was making his way over to the high school to start setting up for his Hellfire campaign. You knew if he wasn’t going to come to you and talk about things, you’d have to go to him. And that’s exactly what you planned on doing. You knew he wouldn’t miss a Hellfire meeting no matter what, so he would definitely be there. He wouldn’t be able to hide from you no longer.
You arrived at the high school and made your way to the room where the boys would be at. As you got closer to the door, you could hear them screaming at one another. Most likely over something that just happened during the campaign. You then heard a familiar sound. One that usually filled you with joy, but this time it just made you fill up with more rage than you already had.
Eddie’s laugh.
It pissed you off to no end hearing it. Hearing him having a good time, as if nothing was wrong. As if he hasn’t been avoiding you like the plague all week.
Without any hesitation, you burst through the door. The room falls silent as everyone looks over to see who interrupted them in the middle of their campaign. When Eddie’s eyes finally met yours, he could see how upset you were.
“Oh shit.”, He whispers to himself.
You march your way over where he was, sat on his throne, and you point your finger at his face.
“Where the hell have you been? Hm?”
Before Eddie has a chance to say anything, you continue on with your rant.
“All week! You haven’t called or stopped by to see me all fucking week! You never do that. Ever. We have been best friends forever and now suddenly, without warning you decide to just disappear? What the hell is your problem? Why have you been ignoring me?”
Eddie sat there, speechless and paralyzed from shock. He wasnt expecting you to just show up randomly. He thought he would have more time to think over things before talking to you. He also didn’t expect to be having this conversation in front of the entire Hellfire Club, either.
“Say something!” You yell at him. Still, Eddie can’t find the words. Mouth moving as if he wants to say something but nothing comes out. You were mad before, but now standing here having him just stare at you not saying a word, it sends you over the edge.
“Fuck you, Eddie.” You spewed hatred towards him. “I can not believe after everything you did to me this weekend, you have the fucking audacity to not only ignore me and my calls, but blatantly lie to my face and have Wayne lie for you too. I already know you didn’t go to school Monday, Robin confirmed it for me. I seriously can’t believe you right now!”
You were fuming and after a few seconds of Eddie still not saying a word, you look at him and reach your hand out.
“Give me my key.”
“W-what?” Eddie finally is able to breathe out a word, and of course, it’s not what you wanted to hear.
“You heard me…Give. me. my. key.”
When he doesn’t move to give it, you yell again, still beyond frustrated with him.
“NOW!”
With trembling hands, Eddie reaches for it. He slowly takes the spare key to your apartment off the key ring and places it in your hand. You walk back over to the door, turning to him one last time before you leave.
“Don’t bother calling or coming over anymore. Not until you actually grow the fuck up for once. Until then, I’m done. I don’t need to put up with you and all of your bullshit, especially not after what happened.”
You slam the door shut, leaving the boys there in silence. Walking back out of the school, you feel hot tears running down your face. In this moment, you could care less. You just wanted to go home and forget about everything that has happened this past week.
Eddie is left sitting there, staring at the door trying to hold back the tears in his eyes that are fighting to spill over the edge. Gareth is the first one to break the silence.
“Dude, I don’t know what you did” he says looking away from the door and back over to Eddie, “but whatever it was, you really fucked up.”
Still not saying a word, Eddie thought to himself.
He really did fuck up this time.

The Great Wanderrose Doomsday Survival Celebration Exchange!
12 Authors // 12 Fics // 85,044 Words
The time has come! Before Night Swan: The Prequel came out, there was a lot of worry that its release on May 14th would be Wanderrose Doomsday. Two months (to the day!) later, there are 12* new Wanderrose one shots on AO3, courtesy of the writers participating in The Great Wanderrose Doomsday Survival Celebration Exchange!
If you're a Wanderrose fan, I encourage you to check out the one shots from this collection and to leave kudos and comments for the writers who made this exchange possible. A lot of hard work went into these fics, and I want everyone to receive the love and recognition they deserve for their efforts. The exchange has something for everyone's tastes - one shots range from 3,004 to 21,083 words and contain angst to fluff and everything in between, so whether you're in the mood for something quick or long, happy or sad, there's a story that has just what you're looking for.
Thank you so, so much to all of the incredible authors involved and to everyone who plans on reading the fics from this exchange! Hosting this exchange has been a wonderful experience and I want to thank everyone who participated for the time and effort they put in to make this exchange a success.

Delicate, Chapter Three: Cinnamon Girl
here we go again! same disclaimers as last time. important talks and a long awaited reunion <3
< prev chapter next chapter >
Narcissa was conflicted, her smile tight as she took in the news.
She and Mary had been invited to a party by Lily Evans.
Lily Evans, who was extremely close to Alice Fortescue.
Alice Fortescue, that who surely going to be present at aforementioned party.
Did Alice know she had been invited? How did she feel about it? Was she the reason Lily had asked for Narcissa, specifically, as Mary’s plus one?
And then, how would Alice react when they saw each other again? How was she? Did she think about her, from time to time?
“You don’t look as excited as I expected. What’s wrong?” Mary interrupted Narcissa’s spiralling, bringing her back to reality. A party at the Potter’s meant a lot of celebrities and therefore the possibility to make oneself known: it was a chance too good for Mary to miss. However, Narcissa was bound to behave in some stupid, pathetic way and she needed Mary to stop her in case she started demolishing her public image by, let’s say, bursting out crying in front of her late teenage love.
“Sit down, I’m going to tell you a story. But you’ll have to promise me you won’t ask any questions until I’m finished, okay?” Narcissa said as she took Bunny from her tank and let her slither around her arm, because for some obscure, probably-rooted-in-her-troubled-childhood reason, it brought her some comfort.
Narcissa sat on the carpet, Mary mirroring her and not speaking a word. She looked worried, and that made something melt in Narcissa’s chest: she hadn’t felt like this since Andy (and Bella, in a way) left, when she was still a little innocent girl sharing little innocent secrets with her sisters. It happened a lot with Mary, an overcoming feeling of nostalgia that was only accentuated by the way the girl seemed to have adapted to Narcissa’s house, by learning in which drawer she kept the spoons, which switch turned on each light, which doors tended to fly open with a smack if you opened them too quickly.
God, she was getting soft.
“You know I went to a conservatory, Hogwarts, right?” Narcissa began.
Mary just nodded, without interrupting her.
“I attended that boarding school for five years, so basically my whole adolescence. I was already professionally trained when I started, obviously, and private teachers were much stricter than the ones at school, so I have always been ahead of my classmates and I found myself with a lot of free time and freedom, especially compared to my life back home. I was never quite able to shake off the feeling my parents were watching me, though, so I never had the courage to really break their rules. That was until a new girl showed up, at the beginning of my third year.” She couldn’t help the smile that naturally bloomed on her lips, her gaze fixed on Bunny.
“Her hair was a mess of curls, her smile a bit crooked, her tie always out of place. Subconsciously, I knew she was the exact opposite of what my parents approved of, so I immediately despised her. However, fate decided it would have been funny to tie our lives together, and since my roommate had coincidentally graduated, the two of us ended up sharing a room. And I’m forever glad it happened, Mary. This is the part where things start to get really personal, okay?”
“My lips are sealed.” Mary replied, raising her palms in surrender. She had gotten a little closer, moved by curiosity.
“They better be. Anyway, this girl took guitar lessons and I had piano, but we still shared singing classes together. Oh, Mary…I will never forget the first time I’ve heard her singing. I remember thinking, and it is a big compliment considering where I grew up, that I was lucky for witnessing the beginning of something so great. You see, I have been raised to become a singer, to use my voice as a means to get richer and greater, but I still felt like an amateur standing next to her. Not because her technique was better than mine, the teachers always praised me more,” Narcissa added, aware she sounded ostentatious, “but she had this energy, this unique style that wasn’t…fabricated, like mine. I stood next to her, and I realised the way I sung might have been flawless and pleasing to the ear, but it could never be anything more. It was never going to feel real.”
Narcissa paused, trying to find the right words to continue this conversation.
“You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to,” Mary tried to come to her rescue, but Narcissa shook her head.
“It’s not that I don’t want to, it’s just…hard to voice these thoughts for the first time. I’ve never told this to anyone,” Narcissa replied, a bit bashful. “At the time of the story, my relationship with my sisters was already a mess, and we didn’t talk much. But you already know that, the media made sure of it.” She added, bitterly.
She had grown used to it, seeing as she had been under flashing cameras since the day she was born. Mary pressed her lips together, looking regretful, like she could’ve just ignored the news spread by paparazzi.
“Because I was a child, the moment I was confronted with this random girl that I considered so much better than me, I got incredibly jealous. I wanted to hate her, I really did. But she was always friendly, laughing at my snarky comments like they were inside jokes, and even when I pulled pranks on her she retaliated like it was a game between the two of us. I like to remember those days as the the chance I had at a normal adolescence.”
“What did you do?”
“I know you’re the one who put that red sock in my white laundry, Black. Since you like pink so much, I’ve mixed some hair dye with your shampoo. Now we match!”
“You-“
“I was mean, at times, but she always reacted in a way that inevitably made me feel like shit. For instance, her parents owned an ice cream parlor, and when I made a snobbish joke about that, she showed up the next day with a giant bowl of every ice cream flavor imaginable. We ate it all in one afternoon.”
“What were you saying about my parents selling ice cream?”
Narcissa took another spoonful and closed her eyes in delight.
“That it is truly one of the most noble and respectable occupations. Wait, what flavour is that?”
“Mmh…Blue?”
“I fell for her smile, her clumsiness, the songs she wrote. She was a poet. Still is. I wanted to be more like her, so we started spending more time together, skipping the classes we didn’t like, hiding in the yard behind the dorms. She smoked and played her guitar, while I simply watched her. I even started writing songs, which wasn’t expected of me by my parents: all my future albums had already been written, hidden in my future manager’s drawer.”
Narcissa noticed that Mary was itching to ask something, probably what happened after that, but she was stopping herself.
It was a cute effort, cute enough to be rewarded.
“We fell in love. We kept it a secret at school, but I knew she expected to make it official once we were out of there. As you know, however, I had other plans for my future,” then Narcissa added, rolling her eyes, “Well, my parents had other plans. Anyway, we had this huge row, we were both mad at each other, and I said some things that deeply hurt her and that I wish I had never spoken. There, end of the tale.”
Mary was gaping at her, disappointment evident on her face.
“Time for the questions,” Narcissa allowed.
“That can’t be the end! What happened then?” Mary protested quickly.
Narcissa smiled so, so sadly.
“She made a song inspired by the last words I’ve said to her, became worldwide famous because of it, and I’ve had to listen to my worst mistake playing on the radio for ten years. And apparently, we are going to one of her best friends’ party this weekend.”
Mary looked comically horrified. “Oh my God, Narcissa… I had no idea, I’ll just tell Evans we can’t go-“
“No, don’t,“ interrupted Narcissa, “It’s fine, really. Maybe I’m delusional, but…” she sighed, “I just want to see her again. The worst part is that we never got any closure: I just ran away, and she didn’t chase after me. Not like I was expecting her to, obviously.”
Okay, maybe that wasn’t the complete truth. During the first years after their ‘breakup’, Narcissa had wanted nothing to do with Alice, because she had showed her the promise of what could’ve been their future in another life, and it was too good and too far from her family’s expectations.
In the end, though, all that was left was an aching longing that she had put into words with songs that would’ve never seen the light of day. Or so she had thought, before she left her home on a delirious rampage.
Narcissa had hoped for a call, a text, anything really. And yet, the only way she could hear from Alice was on the radio, or through her headphones. She finally had the chance to speak to her, and she wanted to take it oh, so desperately.
“Lily told me your cousins will be there, too.” Mary interrupted the heavy silence, and Narcissa was grateful for the change of topic. Mary had crossed the carpet that divided them, close enough to hug Narcissa if she wanted to.
She decided to let her head fall to the other girl’s shoulder instead- Narcissa had never been too keen on physical contact, and yet this small display of affection was enough to comfort her. It was enough to make her realize she hadn’t been comforted in years. Fuck.
“I figured. I want to talk to them, it’s been so long. I’m so proud of them. Regulus, especially,” Narcissa let her hand travel on the carpet, while Mary listened in silence.
“He left when he was only 18. And he didn’t even go to his brother first, he preferred staying with this girl no one ever heard of.” Narcissa remembered with a smile.
She didn’t know the details of what happened between the two brothers after Regulus’ undertaking, but Sirius had always been very protective of him, even when things were complicated, so she could only imagine how enraged he must’ve been when he discovered he was bested by a woman he had never even seen.
“I think she’s called Pandora Lovegood,” Mary informed her. “She was rumored to be Regulus’ girlfriend, and people on the Internet started to make these crazy theories about the real reasons behind his escape, saying he did it for his ‘forbidden love’. They never confirmed anything, though, and he keeps bringing her as a guest during social events or parties…maybe you can ask him about it this Saturday.”
Narcissa was glad Mary couldn’t see her face, because she was really close to cackling: Regulus, the 12 year-old boy who had a full breakdown in her room because he didn’t want to kiss a girl on the cheek for a movie, with a girlfriend. Simply hilarious.
“I guess I could, yes,” she agreed, her sarcasm going unnoticed.
Her head was still on Mary’s shoulder, the silence between them stretching long but comfortable.
“Mary,” Narcissa called.
“Cissa,” Mary answered.
“Do you have any brothers or sisters?” Narcissa didn’t really know why she asked, or where she wanted the conversation to go. Mary was extremely reserved about family matters, so-
“Yes, I do. I have two brothers, both younger. One is in middle school, the other a few years younger.” Mary’s tone was fond, and even if she was out of Narcissa’s sight, it wasn’t too hard to imagine a small smile on her lips.
“You never talk about them. You’re always working, either at the café or here…don’t they miss you when you’re not home?” Narcissa questioned, feeling bold.
“Oh, well, it’s not like I see them when I get home, since I’ve been living in a hotel for a while now,” Mary explained, sounding embarrassed.
Narcissa was not expecting that.
“You what? Since when?” she asked, startled, moving away from Mary to look at her in the eyes.
“I’ve wanted to leave that house for a while, so I saved some money with my part-time job,” Mary said, ”I moved about a month after signing the contract, when I was sure I could make it by myself.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Narcissa replied, distraught, putting a hand on Mary’s shoulder. “I have asked you to come live with me!”
“No you haven’t?” Mary countered, confused and slightly alarmed by Narcissa’s fervor.
“You want me to come live with you?”
“We spend most of our time together already, I thought it was obvious?” Narcissa answered frantically.
Mary just laughed, uncontrolled and loud. Narcissa pouted.
“Fine, fine! I’ll come live with you, if you’re so desperate to have me around,” she smiled. “I’ll bring my stuff tomorrow, if I can manage. Is that okay with you?”
“Sure, whatever.” Narcissa replied, still looking like a crossed child. They sat next to each other on the floor, letting the silence settle for a while. Mary was good at reading people, Narcissa had learnt. She always seemed to know when someone needed some quiet, or preferred to ramble, and adapted accordingly. Everchanging, constantly camouflaging to survive.
“Why did you ask?” Mary asked.
Narcissa sighed, because one, she was expecting that question, and two, she didn’t know, either.
“Sometimes I hate them. Sirius and Regulus, I mean,” Narcissa explained. “Sure, they fight, seem to hate each other, and their relationship isn’t perfect, but at least it’s there. For my sisters, we’re dead to each other.”
“Have you tried calling them?” Mary suggested, and it should’ve been a silly thing to ask, because of course Narcissa should have tried to call them, it was the most logical thing to do. But she hadn’t. Andromeda left when Narcissa was still controlled by their parents and didn’t try to contact her, not even after her escape. Bellatrix was still proudly part of the family, so Narcissa hadn’t even bothered trying.
“No,” Narcissa replied, defeated. “It’s useless, they went on with their lives. I keep up with the articles about Bellatrix, so I kind of know what’s going on, but Andromeda has completely disappeared. I wonder how she did that.”
And why she didn’t bring me with her.
“…Do you resent her?” Mary whispered, quietly. Narcissa turned to look at her.
“For leaving?”
“Mhm.”
“Well, if I did resent her now it would be hypocritical, since I also ran away. But I used to, yes. Why? Are you worried your siblings might grow to hate you?“
Mary leant back, eyes travelling to the ceiling. Narcissa thought she looked so serious at times, with her gaze lost in thought and her lips clamped shut. Preoccupation made her look older.
“I’m not worried. When the time came, I told my parents it was time for me to enter the real world, that I had found an apartment out of town I could afford and that I was going to call them weekly,” Mary smiled bitterly, her eyes bright with tears Narcissa wasn’t going to address. “They didn’t bat an eye. One less mouth to feed, I guess. My youngest sibling, Theo, told me with tears in his eyes that he was going to miss me, while the oldest, Bingley, felt betrayed. He didn’t say it, but I could see it in his face.” Mary sighed, looking at Narcissa’s neck, where Bunny had slowly found her designated place.
“I know they will understand, if not now when they’re older, then. And if they do not understand, I’ll explain why I left myself.”
“…Why did you do it, though?” Narcissa asked, cautious.
“I did it because I deserve to be happy. Back there I wasn’t in pain, but I was miserable. And I couldn’t pretend like it didn’t affect me, so I packed my stuff and left for a place that allowed me to grow. And here I am,” Mary smiled at her, nudging her arm, making Bunny hiss in agreement.
Narcissa was having severe flashbacks of a conversation she never had, a scene in a parallel universe where her family was slightly less dysfunctional and talking felt a lot more natural. She refused to tear up.
“Why didn’t you ask your brothers to come with you?” She asked, or rather, sobbed. Fuck.
“Because it was risky,” Mary answered, seeming to understand that this conversation had more layers than just simple curiosity. “Although it wasn’t the best, my house offered stability, and I can’t support two more people on my own. When the time comes, they’ll be free to leave and come to me, but I’m not a mother, Cissa, and I don’t have to play the role for them.”
Shit, she was about to cry. Shit, shit, shit.
Did Andy feel like that? Did she also consider taking her sisters with her, when she had left that night?
When Narcissa ran away, three different types of illegal substances numbed most of her feelings, so she couldn’t really draw a comparison between their experiences.
“They won’t understand, Mary. You can’t expect them to.” She replied, managing to make her voice sound a lot firmer than it actually was.
“And that’s fine. I’ll explain when the time comes,” Mary replied, sounding so sure, so calm, so mature for a twenty two year-old.
Then she added, smirking, “Maybe I’ll start by calling them.”
Narcissa shoved her.
~
Lily had informed Alice that she and Mary would soon start working together, but since MacDonald was already quite busy with the release of her debut album, they weren’t going to start writing together for a few more weeks.
Alice was grateful for the delay: Lily was determined to work with Mary, and the girl seemed really close to Narcissa Black.
So, simply put, Alice’s (already trembling) emotional stability was really close to falling apart.
No one knew of their relationship back when they were at Hogwarts, and no one knew that relationship was actually something more than friendship. A something that apparently still meant everything to Alice, and nothing to Narcissa, since after ten years, the first was still unable to move on, and the second had completely erased the other from her life.
But Alice remembered. Oh, she remembered so well.
All her songs revolved around Narcissa in one way or the other: the memory of her, the feelings Alice had for her. Everything, for everyone to hear. She would be lying if she didn’t admit that a small part of her, the weakest, hoped Narcissa heard them, too.
Alice’s creative process wasn’t a journey through emotions or stories she wanted to explore or create, it was an eternal war that always took place on the same battlefield.
The school, the dorm, her lips.
The whispers, the fights, her kisses.
Was it possible for a poet to worship, despise, cherish and reject their own muse all at the same time?
Oh, how a juvenile mistake can change someone’s life. Because that’s was what it was to Alice, a mistake. It should’ve never happened, even if it felt too good to be true, even if it’s what led her to fame.
Even if it felt like love.
Luckily, the possibility of meeting Narcissa were low, even considering Lily’s new project. She was going to work with Mary, not Narcissa, so she was still safe, for now.
Speaking of this Mary, Alice was was looking forward to meeting her: Lily had been talking about her for days, about how fun she was, how talented she was, how she seemed to completely ignore all the rumours about her. So when Lily told her Mary was going to be present on Saturday, Alice was extremely excited.
The party at the Potter’s had already started, and even though the ‘small gathering’ already counted more than seventy people, Peter was still nowhere to be seen: James, Sirius and Marlene had gone to pick him up, so they were going to come back soon. Even Regulus, who was bringing Pandora, still hadn’t shown up, but Dorcas Meadowes was already deep in a conversation with Euphemia Potter and Mrs Zabini, probably discussing Zabini’s next spring collection. Lily was somewhere with Frank and Benji, probably ignoring the champagne glasses in the living room in favour of the vodka shots available in the kitchen.
Since Alice refused to get drunk so soon, she was left chatting with people she didn’t know too well about things she didn’t really care about, but honestly, she was enjoying it. She was just talking to Molly Weasley (neé Prewett) about the challenges and difficulties of growing pumpkins (Molly worked with her brothers in the film industry so what would she know about growing pumpkins, Alice had no clue) when the doorbell rang. She heard Lily stumbling in her heels from the kitchen calling “It’s her! It’s her!”, but since Alice was closer, she went to get it.
She opened the door, and Narcissa Black was on the other side.
She opened the door, and Narcissa Black was on the other side.
And she was beautiful. She looked more mature now, healthier, but her attitude was as confident as ever.
Posture impeccable just like that day they met, when Alice had walked into her future dorm room and had found this blonde girl made of steel and ice staring down at her like she was a stray dog.
Her eyes were bright like every time Alice pulled out a cigarette in front of her, wordlessly convincing her to skip classes and lay on the grass together.
Narcissa looked like beauty and regret.
As time stretched indefinitely, Lily caught up to Alice and leant on the door frame, looking at the girl standing next to Narcissa. Because Mary was there, too.
“Mary, hi! You look gorgeous!” Lily greeted the girl, who thanked her and smiled brightly.
Alice tried to say something to Mary, but she couldn’t get her eyes off Narcissa. Of course she couldn’t, she never managed to.
Then Narcissa did something mad, horrid, monstrous.
She offered Alice her hand and spoke.
“Alice. It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”
Lily was now looking at Alice with faux surprise.
“You know each other?” she asked, innocently. Alice glared at her, because she knew Lily knew, and she knew Lily did it on purpose. Alice also instantly knew Marlene was part of this, too.
People these days, can’t even let you handle your problems unhealthily.
Then Narcissa spoke again, and of course Alice gave her her full attention, because she still reacted to her voice like a dog to whistle. Ten years later, still as pathetic as before.
“…You haven’t told them?”
Oh, she was offended. Now that made Alice’s blood boil.
“Ironic, that.” Narcissa added bitterly, letting her hand fall, untouched.
Alice felt her gaze harden, but kept her mouth shut. Instead, she did what she had learnt to do well in the past years when confronted with Narcissa Black: Alice turned on her heels, and walked away. She vaguely heard Lily taking her two guests to the living room to introduce them to Effie, before disappearing in the kitchen.
Turns out, it was just the right time to get drunk.
