So I have an au where Kendra stays in Sunnydale, dies for a bit when Angel loses his soul, and then Faith shows up. So Jenny and Giles have basically adopted three teenaged girls with super strength

no but the thing is, when the hero falls in love with the villain she is falling in love with the darkest parts of herself. she is owning her shadow and the owning makes her stronger. it is not about whether a ship is toxic or romanticising abuse because it’s not about two individuals. the struggle is not one between two people, just like the love is not between two people. when the hero falls in love with the villain she is loving herself. when she loves herself she is stronger, better, able to transform darkness instead of running from it. at the moment of loving, a person changes. the loved changes. and the love of the villain changes the hero. it’s all about this, don’t you see?

The thing about Buffy is that it's been thoroughly established that she doesn't do casual sex. She rejects guys in high school who move too fast too soon, is devastated when she find out there isn't anything emotional between her and Parker, and makes no non-magical attempt to sleep with people she isn't in a relationship with

So option 1 is that she's decided Spike, of all people, will be the first time she has casual, no-feelings sex. Or, option 2, she knows they have some weird fucked up relationship but doesn't want to say it out loud

honestly what i find most valuable about buffy's relationship with spike is that there is absolutely nobody else that could have followed her through the melting point restructuring phoenix fire ruination and rebirth of her entire life and come out the stronger for it with a bond forged of unbreakable steel except for him. i cannot imagine either angel or riley even coming close to surviving that process. they'd have burned and melted away completely before they ever reached the quenching.

It is funny at the end of Tabula Rasa when Buffy can't even look at Spike, she runs away from him when he tries to help her up and asks if she's okay, and then in the Bronze he comes looking so sad and hopeful and she just turns her head and can't even say anything. Just decided on rewatch that in addition to suddenly remembering her crippling depression Buffy is freaked out by Spike thinking he is good when memoryless and him wanting to help her in both worlds. I'm interpreting Spike's heavy breathing desperate pleading look to her at the Bronze as a moment of, please, do you see me now?? even though he knows I guess she doesn't, part of him hopes maybe it could change something, that she'll let him help, cos she can't pretend anymore that that side of him is just a front to win her over and feed his infatuation or whatever.

I think it does change something because it's chipped away Buffy's resolve to dismiss him and she's on her last wee legs with that and can't even look at him without lip trembling. After this shift everything gets 100x times more toxic cos that's the only way Buff can take it :( WHYYYyY

It's so heartbreaking to see all the moments in which Spike offers Buffy such a understanding and tender love, giving her feelings the importance they deserve and how she cannot accept or understand it. She's always been taught about bad and good in such a strict way and getting the support and love from someone she always saw as strictly evil while her friends are so caught up in their world to see her for the human who suffers and needs to rely on people sometimes instead of always being the hero must be so confusing.
