Cotton Club, 500 Jackson Ave, Las Vegas.

Westside's nightlife scene emerged in the early 40s, serving the local African American community and new influx of Black servicemen. The district emerged as a result of restrictive licensing and Jim Crow rules elsewhere in downtown Las Vegas.

Cotton Club opened in ‘43. Moe Taub was first licensed for beer, slots, and race horse keno at the same time the rest of Jackson Ave was opened to liquor and gaming licenses. Sarann Knight Preddy was keno writer at the club in the early years. Westside locals Jodie Cannon in the late 40s, and Uvalde Caperton through the late 50s, were other owner-operators of the club.

Westside clubs in the 40s included Brown Derby (320 Monroe); Shady Rest Barbecue and Club Alabam (600 Jackson/1400 F St); Square Deal Club and El Morocco Club (1322 E St); Green Lantern, Round-Up Bar, and Ebony Club (501 Jackson). Moulin Rouge and Town Tavern followed in the 50s.

Cotton Club operated under different names in the 60s-80s. The building still stands at 500 Jackson Ave as True Vine Baptist Church.

Circa '78 – Love's Lounge. Jimmie Love, a former Nevada Test Site kitchen worker, bought the club in ‘70. Renovations in '78 included a new facade design. Edit from an undated photo from Stan Armstrong. Love’s closed in the 80s.

Lon Chaney opened 500 Jackson as C’s Cotton Club & Lounge for a few years in the late 80s. Ad for opening night, 10/9/87.

No one asked for this, but here's the resource I wanted two months ago. I'll update this if I find more. If you know of a Robin Hood historical romance not included here, please send me a message or reply! I'll add it.

What I consider a "Robin Hood-themed historical romance":

It directly features characters from the Robin Hood legend, or people related to them. This can apply to either to the protagonist couple or supporting characters. This is pretty easy to spot and is a straightforward piece of criteria.

It intentionally riffs on the story of Robin Hood. This can be a little more complicated because there are plenty of examples in historical romance of do-gooder thieves and outlaws, in the forest or otherwise, that clearly lift tropes from Robin Hood. What I tend to look for is barely adapted names/locations, or an acknowledgement from the author of what they intended to do (such as on the dedication page or author's notes).

It must be part of the historical romance genre. These are not Robin Hood books that feature a romance such as "Maid Marian" by Elsa Watson or "Lady of the Forest" by Jennifer Roberson. I love both of those dearly, but they are not historical romance. Books on this list are genre romance novels.

Now, in roughly publication order, here they are. My reviews are linked if I've read the book. I'm adding a ☑️ next to read books and my star rating, as well. (I'll come back and edit the post as I read more of these.) I'm not going to include a synopsis for each one because I haven't read all of them yet. This is just a list of the books and what makes them Robin Hood historical romance.

☑️ "Under the Wild Moon" by Diane Carey Signet Books, 1986 (Rated 1 star)

Will Scarlet as the MMC

Features other characters including Robin, Marian, and Friar Tuck.

"Damsel in Distress" by Shannon Drake Avon Books, 1992

Main characters are original to the author, but involved with Robin and the outlaws.

"The Black Thorne's Rose" by Susan King Topaz, 1994

MMC is a forest outlaw who fights against King John.

(I don't have a copy of this yet, and don't know if other characters or similarities will pop up.)

Marsha Canham has published three books as part of her "Robin Hood Trilogy". I don't know much about these, but they seem to adapt different parts of the Robin Hood story, and I've heard that the last book leads into actual Robin Hood lore.

"The Last Arrow" by Marsha Canham Bantam Books, 1997

A very direct adaptation.

"Lady Outlaw" by Kathryn Kramer Zebra Books, 1997

FMC is a member of Robin's outlaw band.

FMC is a healer for the Merry Men.

Robin, Marian, and Tuck are supporting characters.

Primary villain is Guy of Gisborne.

"Prince of Thieves" by Saranne Dawson Love Spell, 1998

The main characters are Roderic Hode and Maryana (Robin and Marian)

Plot elements follow the Robin Hood story, as well.

"The Baron" by Juliana Garnett Bantam Books, 1999

FMC is is Robin's niece.

MMC is a (different) Sheriff of Nottingham.

Robin, Marian, and others are supporting characters.

☑️ "What a Scoundrel Wants" by Carrie Lofty Zebra Books, 2008 (Rated 3.5 stars)

Will Scarlet is the MMC.

Robin and Marian are supporting characters.

☑️ "The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes" by Cat Sebastian Avon Books, 2022 (Rated 5 stars)

The protagonist couple is Robin (Rob) and Marian, but make it 18th century.

Fervent Prayer

Here is a piece that the amazing @singasongrightnow​ commissioned last december. It is a scene from the beautiful fic “arise, my darling, and go forth” by the incredibly talented @naromoreau​ 

This was supposed to be a single drawing, but it became a small comic, as I felt I couldn't capture the beauty of this scene in its fullest (not sure I managed either, but I gave it my all 😅🙏)

He’s been well adjusted to Julliard now. Daymian has found his calling at this school. Of course there was a lot of pressure on him to be amazing since his father and grandparents both attended the school. So, he plans on living up to the Kydd name. 

Daymian is aware that not everything has been smooth sailing for his parents. He knows they’ve been fighting. Daymian is aware that his mother constantly chooses work over him and Sara and it hurts, but he’s accepted it. He also knows that his dad gave up the stage to take care of his kids. All he wants is for his parents to be happy again. Together and as individuals. 

Daymian has be able to get a taste of what it’s like behind the scenes of music making. Since he’s best friends with Daxton and Elyse and the ‘crew kids’ as they dubbed themselves have been able to travel the country with their friends.

Daymian was no stranger to the glitzy life since his father was on broadway. Being on the road has made daymian realize that he does want to be a performer. Not the way his friends are but on stage like his father, as well as behind the scenes such as a director.
