the name had an evolution. originally it was just mask but tsukasa suggested an asterisk because it looks like a star and suggest extra information. toya also added that the M is for mizuki, A is for aoyagi, S is for Saki, and K is for kasa. saki wanted it in all caps because it looked cool and nothing else. so now we’re left with MA*SK

Tsukasa is a Styracosaurus because I made Saki a Stellosaurus which is another ceratopsian and also its frill is like vaguely star shaped kinda sorta not really

I don't have much to say about him so can i just mention how awful that Stellasaurus drawing is.

Yeah only recently did i start figuring out how the fuck to draw decent ceratopsians I am so sorry (the struggle is real i almost accidentally gave tsukasa 2 left feet here i swear i know what i'm doing)

I should redo that Saki at some point, girl deserves so much better than that wonkey crap. speaking of ceratopsians i opted out of giving him protofeathers unlike Saki idk they just didn't look right on him you can kinda go either way with most ceratopsians so i just do it when the vibe fits and don't when the vibe doesn't fit

Rui is a Troodon because Troodons are often associated with intelligence because they have the biggest brain to skull ratio of any dino, there's kinda no real way to know how intelligent dinos were but troodon just has the reputation of the smart dinosaur and people often depict them using tools like how crows do and that's like kinda like how rui does robot stuff, he also just fits the raptor shape sorta i feel like raptors have that sorta look to them that is like a similar vibe to the one Rui has, even tho Rui is the tallest character in sekai I feel like he's a mid sized dinosaur, does that make sense? no, but it does to me and i make the rules he's also 100% a feathered dino so it fits

Speaking of Troodon all you 2 paleo nerds reading this are getting war flashbacks from the name Troodon because Troodon itself has a interesting history of being a "wastebasket taxon" which is nerd talk for "scientists just threw a bunch of vaguely similar animals into this one category and didn't consider that maybe this was like 5 different animals and what would be the long term consequences of doing that" yes this is a thing that has happened enough times that there is a word for it

that shit still as of now isn't sorted out I don't think, I at least based my Troodon off the big one from Alaska that literally does not have a fucking name and is just like "the Alaska Troodon". I feel like the size fits and imma be real its the Troodon you see everywhere in media these days because its big and cool and it lived with Pachyrhinosaurus and Nanuqsaurus and also people like it cuz drawing dinosaurs in the snow is fucking awesome (boom i just tricked you into learning paleontology history)

Emu is an Archeopteryx because Emu is supposed to be like a phoenix and Archeopteryx could probably fly or glide or smth it's general considered like "the first bird" so like yeah (now that i think about it i could've made her pyroraptor cuz of the name but also she doesn't fit the vibes of a raptor at all i guess pyroraptor has the whole fire bird thing from its name) Emu would also be a small feathered dinosaur for sure so it fits in that sense too.

Nene is a Stegosaurus because the plates kinda look like her hair thing and her outfit in general and i feel like nene would have those tail spikes for some reason idk it just fits her energy, she'd def be a herbivore as well i feel. Also i personally just associate stegosaurus with the color green personally idk why (at first i was thinking she would be iguanodon because that's another dinosaur that's green in my head but she has like nothing in common with iguanodon lmao)

I guess nenerobo would be an Ankylosaurus than because that would like probably be the logical robot version of a stegosaurus maybe idk would nenerobo exist in this universe, you decide idk

i guess next one is that last one unless i wanna redo the vocaloids in this style or redraw saki at some point or whatever see you whenever that happens in however long it takes

sorry if this is totally out of pocket, but i have a project sekai au that i may never do anything with, so i figured i'd share it here so it doesn't just live only in my brain forever?? a kind-of unit swap, but instead of being full group changes, everybody's a bit scattered in different, uneven directions.

an never bumps into kohane on vivid street. instead, after haruka gives up being an idol when she can't get on stage anymore, she discovers she can sing on the street with an, causing the two childhood friends to reconnect and become partners.

akito and ena sing together for the first time on accident (they were bickering and that turned into a singing battle) but they ended up drawing a crowd. ena, at a low point with her art, finds validation in people cheering for her, and decides to see where singing takes her. their drive and passion catches the attention of shiho working at a live house, and the three of them decide to work together.

mizuki, seeking a place to belong, cautiously accepts an invitation by rui to make costumes for phoenix wonderland at emu's request. minori finally succeeds in an audition, but didn't realize she was accidentally auditioning for a theater troupe instead of an idol group, so she's there too. kohane joined because of her love of the park and minori begging her to give performing a shot so she's not in this alone.

saki decided to become an idol because of the positive impact airi had on her while she was in the hospital. ichika, eager to reconnect, hesitantly agreed to join her. tsukasa didn't need convincing, he had a princely outfit ready the second saki opened her mouth to ask. they also recruit shizuku, fresh out of leaving cheerful*days, to coach them in the ways of being an idol. she doesn't want to be on stage with them out of fear of accidentally stealing the spotlight, but she can't say no to shiho's old friends.

(honami, nene, airi, and toya are up to...something, i've yet to place them exactly)

kanade and mafuyu are largely unchanged, but working alone together instead of in a group means they're even more tightly intertwined with each other for support than in canon. for better and for worse.

Whenever Akito stays over at Tsukasa's, he often wakes up to breakfast (and it's usually pancakes)

hi i'm the guy who wrote a whole ass essay about my fav ships, with Nene as an unwilling match-maker. headcanons for the Shinonomes bc i love them;

- Akito can draw, courtesy of having an artist as a sister. Like, if he decided to pursue art instead of music, he could. His art is almost on par with Ena's. I think that when VBS was too lazy to do a choreography for a song they want to upload on social medias, they'd make Akito make an MV for it lol (ofc the others would help him make it, n25 style)

- I think it's pretty much canon that the Shinonomes have sweet tooth, especially for pancakes and cheesecakes, but i want to expand on that; New dessert shop down the street? they'd already bought the entire menu by the end of the week. New dessert recipe on trend? when Shinonodad (i forgor his name) came home, the kitchen was messy af and the culprits were on the sofa, eating said dessert while watching netflix or smth.

- Adding to that, everytime it's like, Valentine's, or White Day, or any celebration day where cafes and shops would have like, couple discounts, Ena and Akito would pretend to be couple just to get that discount or free dessert. it's the only time they were nice to each other. Mizuki caught them once. She took a photo of them and sent it to the Kamiyama gang gc. An died laughing. Nene said that's actually genius.

- Everytime N25 had a meeting, at one point they'll get the honor of witnessing the fight of the Shinonomes first hand. like, it's so common for the Shinonomes to fight in the dead of night that at this point, Mizuki already prepared popcorns.

- None of them are a morning person. At 6 AM every morning, you will witness the waking up for school Akito and just finished school Ena. They either stare at each other before having a mutual understanding, or the other would somehow trigger the other and they would have a boderline almost physical fight.

- also yes they have fist-fighted each other for at least 5 times in their life. And i just know one of the fight was bc one of them ate the other's cheesecake.

- Akito is trans-masc and Ena is trans-fem. They traded genders.

- They also traded clothes.

- When they came out, Shinei (shinonodad, i remembered his name finally) actually doesn't really care. for how much he's an asshole, he still loves his kids. Shinei just goes "oh, ok" and hugged them. Shinei's not the best parent but he's trying.

- Shinei actually bought Akito a binder. Akito cried.

- WLW and MLM hostility. that's them.

- Akito knows how to style hair. He taught Ena how to do it.

- ENA GOES TO VBS' CONCERTS AND AKITO ALWAYS WAITS FOR N25'S SONGS PREMIERES. they'd rather die than admit that tho.

tsukasa is a solo magical girl protecting shibuya, tokyo (i think that's where project sekai takes place) and akito is a photographer following tsukasa around on his missions!

they're also gay for each other but doesn't know it yet (they're both idiots) akito explains away his feelings with him being a photographer and tsukasa fighting makes for interesting photos! and tsukasa just doesn't realise that he's in love especially since he's too busy with school, wxs, and saving the city!

akito has a wall filled with photos of just tsukasa btw - vbs also totally caught onto akito's feelings before akito did!

akito, saki, toya, and wxs are the only people who know tsukasa is the magical hero!

also tsukasa is genderfluid and akito helps her dress more feminine in public for the first time! (akito is transmasc so probably gave his old unused women's clothes to tsukasa)

to whoever sees this post. do you have a favourite april fools class? because i do and it is one HUNDRED percent solid heart. i love every character in here so much it is so perfect to me that they were all put together

shiho is not my favourite in leo/need (its actually honami) but i honestly really identify with her and it's so great to watch her develop and see the way she deeply cares for her friends (and her sister please stop saying she hates/dislikes shizuku i cant take it) despite her tough exterior

airi is my absolute favourite character for so many reasons. first of all- she is so cute! i love her design and her cards are all great. but even more so i adore her character as a whole. you can see that she really loves not only her fans - from the way she interacts with them on livestreams, and there's also her interactions with saki if you need another example -, but also her unitmates - the way she shares her experience with minori to help her improve, admires haruka and supports her, reminding her to take breaks, and dont even get me *started* on shizuku because there is so much to say about them that i would end up talking about them forever - and also her close friends, such as ena (she's also in solid heart by the way! love her!)

akito is so SO passionate about music and honestly i'm with him there. he likes people who are also passionate about their interests - i am also with him there! i just overall really enjoy how committed and hard working he is when it comes to music, the way he interacts with and cares for the rest of vbs, and also i think his dynamic with ena is great

nene is literally just like me for real for real. i love to reread the wxs stories in order to see how she gradually opens up to her unitmates and becomes more confident - around her peers, but also whilst performing on stage. the rest of wxs love and care about her and she, too, loves and cares about them! she dreams big, and continues to pursue her dreams even though she knows that one day she'll have to leave wxs because of them. because of this she also cherishes all the time she spends with them !! also in canary sings in a quagmire she has the courage and strength to ask for help from her idol herself and it's just so brilliant to see how far she's come from the beginning of the story when she could barely talk to the rest of wxs and had to hide behind nenerobo AND SHE'S ALSO JUST SO CUTE IN GENERAL AND I LOVE HER OK

i feel like ena and her character arc often don't get a lot of attention in this fandom compared to the rest of niigo but i honestly love how far she's come and how she's improving at art and gradually gaining more and more confidence in her creations - to the point where she also teaches others how to draw (rainbow canvas event story) . just her deciding to rejoin her old art class was such an impactful moment for me and i'm super interested to see how she'll develop from this point onward. furthermore! the way she supports the rest of niigo! i love it! when she took mafuyu to her house in someday this wish will transcend the morning sky! the ending of my footsteps your destination! it's just so beautiful and she is such a great character and i could talk about her and niigo in general for hours but for the sake of this post not being longer than an essay i will not

and KAITO ! i do not really have anything to say about him compared to the others but some time last year i made a list of my favourite commissioned songs from each unit and they all featured kaito (except niigo because niigo kaito didnt exist at the time) so theres that

Tsukasa and Mizuki are their knight cards. Saki is her valentines card. Rui I never imagined a specific card, a mix of Showtime ruler and kamikou fes maybe? This was before wd Rui so now it's that one. Honami is her putting feelings into words card (the saint one). Didn't think about anyone else.

so i didn't configure 80loid personally, but i do have a few resources that could possibly help!

tutorials:

there's a video tutorial covering C+V english, Eightyloid's original voicebank type (of note though: she pre-dates this tutorial and was created using different methods, so she is not currently compatible w this phonemizer - though she will be updated to support it)

practical tips:

this is the stuff i have experience with lol

make sure ur in a good recording environment that's relatively free of outside noise. some ppl like to use recording studios, others improvise and get under their desk, inside a closet, under a blanket, etc. to block out noise

nice mic, doesn't have to be amazing since the audio will be compressed anyways, but it'll work to your advantage if it's less, LESS compressed haha

clean the audio. i'm not great at this personally; i just used Capture Noise Print on unwanted noises and had my DAW filter them out. that way u won't have any unwanted artifacts when ur voice speaks

one thing that i feel helped improve 80s quality over her first voicebank was positioning yourself over the microphone to help capture the bassy tones. try a few different positions with ur mic / head and listen to what has the fullest sound

do vocal warmup exercises. for each of 80's vbs, i did exercises for a week prior until i felt comfortable with its strength. i also did not consume dairy, as this produces phlegm and messes with your voice clarity. drink lots and lots of water - especially in between takes

kinda goes w the previous one, but use your chest voice (unless that's not the sound ur going for). i'm not a good singer, so i wanted 80 to sound like what my singing voice would be like - not my everyday speaking one. to that end, make sure you know your pitch. explore a bit to find what works for you and then stick with it - i wouldn't recommend forcing yourself to record in a key you don't feel comfy in because u might not like the result. some people choose to voice act for different vbs and that's cool too, but i guess approach this with the intention of what u want to hear played back at you, if that makes sense? and do it in a way that works with your strengths

some people go about voicebanks already having a design in mind, but personally, i recorded first and then built the character along the way. for example: when i first heard her back, i wasn't expecting 80loid to have such a heavy sound! so i made her have chunky platform heel boots to reflect this... as if she is heavy when she moves / walks haha. meanwhile, her JP voicebank has a much lighter sound, so her heels are a different color and type to reflect this.

another note on design: sometimes the novelty of their looks is more interesting than the voice itself. i've had many people tell me they didn't know what 80loid / UTAU was, but kindly drew her because they loved her appearance. ricediety put this rlly well in a tweet thread once. a voice bank's design should be distinct enough to recognizable among the crowd, but easy enough for others to remember and redraw. for example: i love vocaloid Rana, but her outfit has far too many details! so sometimes i find myself not using her as much because it would mean having to draw all that. on the other hand - SynthV Kevin. his voice isn't that amazing, but his fan design is so silly and easy to draw that people latched on to the character and use him all the time! so comm someone to / design with that intention of it being novel yet accessible to everyone

decently sized ramble ahead (I like talking about art :>)

So the second Leoneed batch was supposed to have two illustrations. The first (and the one posted) is Fennec and Star on one of the bridges in the tenma oasis, right before their departure and this one should've depict them being found by Miku. I still like the drawing but it's too old for me to salvage. Maybe a full redraw? Still I'm busy so. If I'll redraw it, I would adjust the lighting, since the blorbos are in front of a fireplace. Something past me just... didn't consider ... despite how well it would work in such a drawing? Ik I was inexperienced in terms of lighting but man I didn't suck that much to not at least try.

Second is this Charming painting I gave up on last minute. I liked the colors quite well, but the perspective gave me a hard time. The replacement turned out to be decent, so I have no hard feelings with not finishing this. Although it fits Charmings character a bit more... alas

We have this Mirage painting I changed for the second vbs batch. Partially because I aimed for a more dynamic composition, partially because my brain tends to fixate on things that make me severely uncomfortable and sadly this drawing was sent to the gutter because of it :/. It's a shame in retrospect, cuz the colors are great, the lighting interesting and the composition decent enough (needs some adjustments tbh), but hey... better drop a piece than spiral pfff

Then we have both these sketches. They were meant to be the third/fourth drawing for the batch. It was just Summit being brought to prison. First I thought I should draw Smoke watching, but I turned that in the actual third drawing of the batch. Then I thought "Maybe Meiko and the Kagamines could shadow him..." but then I thought "Hey let's... not draw four illustrations" so I dropped it

lastly we have this Lizard doodle... that isn't a wip actually. Why didn't I post it? Well it would've come right after that Siren doodle, where Siren also looks at her bloodied talons in horror. So I feared I might turn that into a thing (I'm not a rational fella sometimes) therefore I stalled on posting it... and then never posted it... it's been several months btw. Anyways that's the Hampter after her first Arena fight. Her opponent was a Icewing hence the blue blood

On the origin of Trin

The first tentative concept Picrew of the character that would become Trin was saved to my laptop on April 16th 2022, and I made a note to myself at the time that the vague concept of the character had been around for about a month at that point. So, we'll consider today, March 16th, to be Trin's first anniversary of existing!

To mark the occasion, I've decided on a total whim to lay out the timeline of Trin's development from the first idea I had, to the character she is today.

Beginnings

Fittingly, Trin technically started her 'life' as three people- triplets, to be exact. I decided that I wanted two of my VB peeps (a Cipher and a BoS guy) to have a child to continue the Ciphers arc into the post-NV era in my convoluted Fallout headcanon universe. I wanted to make a trigonometry reference, and so for the sake of that, the one child quickly became three. I'm not the most mathematically-minded or original, so of course these triplets were intended to be named Sine, Cosine and Tangent.

The triplets got very limited character development, especially since in the one (1) scene I ever pictured them in, they were about two years old. I didn't decide genders or much personality-wise, but I did set out that Sine and Cosine were identical 'twins', Tangent was not identical to them, and that reflected in their personality as they felt conflicted identity-wise and tried to strike out on their own. The main thing I did determine was some details of their physical appearances, with Tangent having short black hair and the other two having longer blonde hair.

Three Become One

At some point after creating the trigonometry triplets, I realised that adding three new interlinked main characters and trying to follow their arcs in the meticulous detail I always do would be simply too much to keep up with. I'd secretly started to favour Tangent and they'd already received a bit more development than the others, so I decided to focus on them and have Sine and Cosine occasionally crop up as background characters.

Soon after this, for reasons I don't entirely remember, I decided to do away with the triplet idea altogether, just have one BoS/Cipher character, and renamed the concept of what had been Tangent to Trinity (bonus fact: it's now canon in-universe that Trin was almost named Tangent as a baby). Still no gender or characterisation yet, and I still only pictured the character as a young child.

First Sightings

And so now we come to April 16th 2022. The first ever image of Trin:

This was also the very first time I envisioned Trin as an adult. I wasn't really getting any strong gender vibes, and had an inkling that the character would turn out to be some variation on the theme of nonbinary.

I continued adding small details and rotating Trin, as I now began to call them, in my brain for a while, and to my mild surprise she soon informed me that she's a cis woman (honestly, that still sometimes surprises me lol).

On May 29th came the first instance of Trinposting! I posted this mysterious drawing of a new character I'd been developing.

To Appalachia

I've always struggled to create new characters on demand for a particular purpose (which is why a lot of my player character OCs start out with a 'placeholder' version, and some unknown length of time later suddenly get more development). The creation of Trin happened to come at a convenient time for me, as I'd been contemplating attempting a new playthrough of Fallout 76 for several months. One day in June, the inspiration suddenly struck me hard to get this playthrough on the road now, and my mind happeend to be thoroughly immersed in Trin at the time, so naturally I decided to play as her. I originally considered just using an AU version of her due to 76 being set so early in the timeline, but I'm no stranger to altering canon for my own needs, and so in-universe, Trin arrived in West Virginia in 2295.

In-game, this was one of her first nights above ground. In-universe, I consider this the earliest canon screenshot of Trin, taken on her very first night in Appalachia (all the Vault stuff had to go considering her amended origin)

When I first started the playthrough, Trin was very much still primarily a blank slate of a character. She had an established backstory, but not a lot in the way of personality, talents, opinoins, and the likes. After I'd been playing for a week or so, had got to grips with the game mechanics and was no longer solely focused on survival, she really began to show herself through the in-game choices I was making.

On Sexuality

I don't remember at what point I decided/was 'told' by Trin that she was aroace, but I do know that I never much thought about her orientation prior to that and would never have considered anything else to fit her. Getting personal for a second: Looking back, it feels very coincidental that this took place not long before I myself finally figured out I'm aro as well as ace, and I feel like my exploration of aromantic-ness (aromanticism?) through the lens of Trin played a bigger role in my discovery of that than I've ever previously really acknowledged.

Becoming Crunchy

By August, she was much more developed and had become thoroughly enmeshed in the 76 world, and I, being the same plague-obsessed Chaos as always, decided it was high time to Scorch her.

From here, a lot happened plot-wise, but the basic characterisation of Trin has remained more or less constant. She left Appalachia for around a year in-universe to focus on trying to recover, eventually came back with a friend and some new scars across her face, built a mini settlement, entangled herself further in WV and its factions, made yet more friends and re-encountered some old ones, aaand most recently cut her hair.

I'm still thoroughly obsessed with Trin, and don't foresee that changing in the near future! She's very quickly overtaken all of my other OCs to have the highest populated tag on my blog, and that will probably continue for Some Time lol. I just wish I could kick myself into gear to write up more of her story hgfdfgf.
