Couldn't sleep well last night (day ending in y and all that) so for some reason my brain decided to fixate on Macbeth which is tied for my favourite Shakespeare (the other is Midsummer Night's Dream, so I could say it's my favourite tragedy at least). I was in a terrible production of Macbeth in my late teens, trying to work out if I wanted to go into theatre as a career, I knew I wouldn't get a space in WAAPA as an actor (not sure if it's still the case but WAAPA was the most prestigious theatre/performance school in Australia in the 90s and early 00s, Hugh Jackman trained there) so I was doing some intern work in the sound booth and assisting the musical director and the sound techs for this show and it was just. So bad. In the way that only local theatre productions can be. They'd paid this guy to fly out from Sydney to be the director and he was soooo baad at it, jesus, he was very much an "I have my artistic vision and I will communicate it in vague and cryptic ways and you must understand it implicitly or I will lose my temper" sort of artist. He didn't want sets - instead he had a "greek chorus" of teenagers clad in full black who ran around stage carting huge swathes of black sheet plastic that they held in place to be the set pieces

Understandably, the constant crackling of plastic was insanely distracting while the actors were having quiet monologues

Anyway, I love Macbeth, and I always like to think about what sort of adaptation I'd do if I ever got to direct something. I fucking love The Cultured Bumpkin's take on Marcus Aurelius' speech from Julius Caesar and the occasional talk about linguistic shift and accent drift and how the accents in parts of the US are a better match for how Shakespeare would have been performed at the time and all and I thought

Macbeth as a story about a megachurch pastor, trying to move up to the role as head preacher. The southern gothic aesthetic versus the oversaturated, overproduced colours and lights of a megachurch service. The forced niceties and backstabbing of church wives for Lady Macbeth, dressed in starched white dress suits and pearls. The three witches as the last remaining members of a rundown catholic convent on land the megachurch is trying to buy, whose earnest religion is so foreign to them that they might as well be magic

The woods of Birnam come to Dunsinane Hill? Well, the carpark of the church is full of Subaru Foresters that the cops from Birnam drove over in to arrest him

okayyyy soo Kafka ko samjhne ke liye you will have to tap into your own life a little bit (this is what i feel.) read a little bit about him first before starting with his works. jaise ki. kafka had very bad relations with his father. he did everything for him but he was never good enough for his father. kafka wrote very intensely and he wrote about such dark realities of our society that people don't really talk about them.

about metamorphosis. okay soooo it's a pretty dark story. you can give it another try and iss baar na aese padhiye jaise aap ek aese insaan ke baare mein padh rhi jisne ek puri umar guzaar di apni family ke liye har cheez karne mein which disassociated him from everything else. personal life kuch bachi hi nhi.

on the savage side by tiffany mcdaniel, 5*(!!!) - the month started off sooooo good with tiffany mcdaniel's latest release, centring around twin sisters who lose themselves to drug addiction and the path it takes them down to feed their addiction. but like, everything isn't as it seems. and you follow this thread of darkness throughout the novel that exposes itself near the end...and just. wow. i won't tell u my emotions because i literally do not want to give any hint of a spoiler but i think this would appeal to so many reading audiences cause it has a thriller-esque nature to it. please heed content warnings for this one tho x

scabby queen by kristin innes, 1* - baaad. very very baad. this was just boring and hard to follow and had literally no redeeming qualities. the plot was ridiculously hard to follow, i cant remember any of the characters names because there were literally far too many and i get the argument that was trying to be made here but the execution was just soooo far off. big sad to review a scottish author badly but yeah this one was not for me

jazz by toni morrison, 3.5* - ya know what, i enjoyed it. think i'm at that reader level now where i can appreciate morrison and think i'll try and read her whole works next year because i did really enjoy this one. plot was really interesting, characterisation worked so well, some beautiful stunning prose. interesting discussion on power structures, class, who and where home is. i liked it.

venomous lumpsucker by ned beauman, 3* - oh dear. this was like a heavy predicted 5* for me. i have had a copy since christmas last year and i haven't picked it up because i was waiting for that right moment, cause i thought it was going to be oh so good. and it wasn't. it was....it was just missing that bite. the writing style felt childish in places. really long-winded sentences and run-offs that had no place in making the story stronger. really dislikable characters and the message of the book got lost halfway through when side-quests started to be explored. a shame, cause i think the themes that beauman was playing with here and the way he was trying to craft them could have been so intelligent and so interesting, but this really missed the mark for me. it could maybe be a 2* honestly. sigh

grief is a thing with feathers by max porter, 4* - yeah this was clever. this was gut wrenching. it was a re-read. but it hit me just as hard as it did the first time. the "you decide" chapter still hurts every time. i carry this family with me. i think this book perfectly encapsulates grief and the way we just have to...move on. i think max porter is a genius and his lyrical writing style is beautiful. one of this generations greats imo.
