cannot stop thinking about jean and neil being the same age, like hello narrative foils?? jean is neil if mary hadn't run away with him. riko's pet, given as appeasement to the moriyamas. neil is a traumatized individual but he still retained his sense of self (for the most part) because while mary was harsh the ultimate reasoning behind her actions was his safety and wellbeing. meanwhile, jean was in the hands of a person who did not care if he lived or died, and treated him as such. repressing his humanity was the only way for him to survive. neil could find moments of reprieve on the run, precious minutes of anonymity for him to catch his breath. there was nowhere for jean to run, nowhere for him to hide. his very identity (I am a moreau. I belong to the moriyamas.) was bound up in his torture. mary running away saved neil and condemned jean in the same breath.

and now here they both are, the same age, both relatively safe and secure for the first time in years, but they are in such different places. neil has found life, love and joy and companionship and the promise of a future, while jean is still merely trying to survive, pulling himself together each day and always on the brink of collapse. neil may still be wounded but he knows who he is, knows what he wants - this was everything he wanted, everything he needed, and neil was never letting go - but jean still doesn't know any of that, is trying to build a new identity for himself out of the scraps of his old life, and they have seen so many of the same things but from such different perspectives and both of them are irrevocably changed from it but in such different ways.

Maybe controversial, but on posts about being dumb where girls are like saying ‘but I’m actually smart.’ Like tbh, I don’t really believe them. Like if you’re smart why does feeling dumb feel so good or hot or whatever to you then? I kinda feel like it’s having an excuse to let go of trying as much as you would be when you’re saying your smart. i love how fraught and complicated discourse around various utena characters ‘dying’ is when anthy is literally stabbed to death eternally by a million swords imbued with human hatred. and then utena gets stabbed to death by them also. like. ‘death’ is incredibly interesting in rgu because most of the time it’s this ambiguous figurative thing that has interesting implications re: ohtori as a closed-off world one can escape. we are all trapped in our coffins. mamiya is the only named character with a grave. nemuro memorial hall functions as one all the same. ruka is implied to have died in the hospital— was he dead all along? who was the boy we saw for these two episodes? is this dead boy the same boy, or is this just another coincidence from the shadow girls, cutting like a knife? it’s heavily implied that akio and anthy murder kanae by poisoning her, adding to the previous implication that they were poisoning mr ohtori too, but there are no perceptible consequences of this. kanae’s absence is not felt. she’s fed an apple slice. what happens to the bodies? we know what happened to the 100 boys, but what about everyone else? and so on and so forth. ‘death’ is a tricky thing in utena, i think it’s constantly functioning on figurative and literal levels in very different ways for very different purposes. dios died. dios was dying. dios didn’t die. he grew up. etc etc

“Why can’t *I* end?! Why can’t this all just stop? Please, make it stop…”

“Ended? I’ve barely even started! I got a chance to start completely over as somebody new! I don’t need you anymore! You’re just dead weight to me now.”

“No. That wasn’t the real ending. We’re a part of something so much bigger than this intersection, telling a story that encapsulates all of history! There’s *more* to this, it *means* something.”

“Then… What am I supposed to do now…?”

DOLORES DEI — “No, Harry.” She turns back to you again now, and she looks… sad.

“We were not metaphors. We were people. Our narrative was not intelligently designed. It simply followed the patterns of history, because those are the only patterns we *know.* We tried to create something new, but we failed. There is no narrative reward for our failure, no satisfactory ending. There is only the immutable past and the unknowable future.”

RHETORIC — There is no assurance of what is good or deserved or what may bring relief. There is no assurance of punishment, either. There is no assurance of anything. Not even of a future. I don’t know what to say to make this bearable.

VOLITION — Even so… As long as you live, *something* is promised. Can you live with that?
