love when ppl defend the aggressive monetization of the internet with "what, do you just expect it to be free and them not make a profit???" like. yeah that would be really nice actually i would love that:)! thanks for asking
#yes i want things to be free like ??? that is not a weird desire#'but but it costs money to keep up' ok and? how is that my problem#the government has plenty of murder dollars they could reallocate a few to make internet services universal if they wanted#also these companies were perfectly capable of supporting themselves before the internet got drowned with ads so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#edit: muting notifs on this post bc new additions have kind of petered out#so no one feel bad about adding something someone else has said‚ it is not bothering me im just trying to keep my#notifs page cleanish lol#also since i saw some people are being redirected to read my tags: firstly hiiiiii this is a special secret message for you:3#secondly i have learned since making this that the reason they were able to support themselves previously was because#of investors bankrolling everything#and theyre now finally realizing that theyre never going to actually make a profit and arent as willing to invest#however thats just a minor correction and doesnt change my overall point#once again. so many murder dollars#so thats why im just adding it here in the tags rather than making an actual correction#anyways . love yall 💕#origibberish#bigger gibbers

Why Do We Need IT Support & Services for Business?
Making the most of technology should be a priority for companies, even though it is hard to keep up with the growing technological boom, as they are always evolving. However, businesses employ professionals for IT-related support and services, which leads to save time and money.

I'm still seeing a lot of angry takes in the tags about how excessive Watcher's current costs are and how all fans really want, apparently, is "just shane and ryan sitting in a basement" back again. While I do think Watcher is probably spending over budget and that's a real issue, a lot of the takes I'm seeing show a fundamental misunderstanding of how video production works and where costs actually lie. So a few quick things that I just keep seeing that are bothering me:
It was never just Shane and Ryan in a basement. BFU did a great job selling that conceit and making sure you never saw anyone beyond them and maybe TJ, but they absolutely had other crew members with them on ghost hunts and they didn't do all the work on BFU themselves. This Q&A from Season 2 lists 36 people on staff for Buzzfeed Unsolved. It's fair to make arguments that Watcher may or may not need 25 people, but those arguments should not be coming from a place of "before it was just Shane and Ryan and nobody else."
If you don't know how many people are needed to make a professional video from a TV/film standpoint, you will not have a reasonable grasp of why Watcher wants to keep 25 people on staff. Sure, some YouTubers get by with a ring light and a contracted editor. The Watcher team have stated repeatedly that they do not want to work as just YouTubers and see themselves more as a production studio—so why do people keep referencing the YouTube model to understand their business? This is like asking the local shake shop why it doesn't function like the kids' lemonade stand down the block. The item category is similar but they're not trying for the same products or process.
The "gold dusted food" is not the big budget sink you think it is. On most TV shows I've worked on it's normal to partner with businesses that are shown onscreen and work out a deal where the price of the product (in this case the gold food) is reduced or eliminated in exchange for the free publicity. Watcher very likely made a deal with every restaurant it worked with to make the Korea trip affordable for the company. The real budget spends are on things you're probably not seeing but that still matter: camera and lighting equipment is expensive, insurance for that equipment is expensive, business overhead and paying your staff are expensive. So again—it's fine to critique Watcher for the streaming plan and the perceived budgetary issues, but go into this knowing the costs might not be coming from the things you see onscreen.
My source is that I work in TV and film and actually have a clue on how the industry functions. Again, 36 people worked on Unsolved (and those were the people mention in Season 2—who knows how big the team blew up past that in later seasons). Entertainment work is real work, and demands decent equipment, competent staff, and the same types of business and budget problems you'd find in any other business (overhead, staffing, etc.). Feel free to critique Watcher's business model, but first try to understand where that model is coming from and what goals it's attempting to serve.
#watcher#watcher entertainment#rant! sorry! couldn't see another take from someone who clearly thinks video work is just fun and games because “it's entertainment right”#funny how people expect normal business costs and problems for any other career but if it's involved with production they think everything#just magically happens and is made entirely by the onscreen talent. nutso#anyway i think watcher is probably trying its best; maybe got too overexcited; but cares about quality of life for its employees and#wants no one working to the bone. which is admirable! the streaming service was a bad idea but they're not the literal devil like some thin#they're 3 self described idiots doing this for the first time. they backpedaled. i don't see this as the death of the company & i'm gonna#keep supporting them :)

Watcher fans sure are entitled and a little insane, ngl. "No one is going to sign up for your service! We're all poor! You've made the worst decision, and you'll be back in no time!" Saying this directly to the creators really reminds you of how low the respect for people you don't personally know has gone. I miss the forth wall between creator and audience.
I get and fully understand not having the money to support them, but... Watcher does have fans with money. A lot of them actually. They have merch sales. Their live tour sells out most venues. They have thousands of supporters on Patreon, where the cheapest tier is $5. They're able to gauge the rough finances of their staunchest supporters; that's how they landed on the subscription price. Yes, this move will reduce their viewership in sheer numbers, but to say all of their fans are broke and none will follow/support is factually incorrect.
It may not be a decision everyone agrees with, but severing the limitations of advertisers and youtube in favor of artistic freedom is a good thing. Yes, even if it comes with a loss of revenue. They understand that risk.
Also, I'm begging people to stop treating this like "another Netflix" or something and instead look at it as, "I am supporting a creator I like, similar to Patreon." They literally said in the video that they don't care if you share accounts. Get five friends, and you'll pay $1/mo.
I hate feeling compelled to rant in favor of their decision because I have my own reservations about whether it's the best move. However, I know it's not a choice they made lightly, and I like to think they understand that they'll need to branch out like crazy to entice subscribers.
#Fair-weather fans#I speak as someone currently undecided if I'll sign up for their service or not#I have my own budget to consider#But the waves of people poor-mouthing AT Watcher directly is ridiculous and embarrassing#“They're underestimating how many of us are poor”#Okay but that's not how business works#They just need enough people who aren't poor#and they may well have those numbers#Do you think they would have made such a drastic decision if they didn't???#If they want to focus on fans who support them even if their hard work isn't free that's their choice#People are trying to be so anti-capitalism on this they've actually circled back around to saying#“Just take ad revenue from these companies so they can profit off your content and I don't have to pay out of MY pocket.”#That's... that's not the anti-capitalism stance you think it is#Maybe (and this is crazy) asking for a few dollars directly instead of through the vehicle of youtube‚ google‚ and all its advertisers is#... not spitting on the fans?#Please stop trying to guilt small content creators to their face while simping for large corporations#Watcher

the sheer amount of unhealthy parasocial attachment the watcher drama has revealed is honestly kind of frightening. "i won't go CRAWLING BACK to watcher now i know they only want me for my money!" girl what did you THINK they wanted you for? your personality? your glittering conversational skills? they don't know you, and you don't know them! "this whole time i was just a transaction to them 😭" yes??? that's how this works? they provide goods and/or services in exchange for currency?? THEY'RE A COMPANY???
like, i've got zero problem with people who don't want to subscribe to the new platform or are now wary of watcher bc of the legitimate concerns their initial decision brought up (potential loss of accessible content, lack of pricing awareness, lack of transparency leading up to the decision, potential lack of financial sustainability) but i am genuinely disturbed by the people reacting like they were broken up with over a company changing their monetization structure
#GET A GRIP#same goes for people going ''all you FAKE FANS aren't loyal for not supporting watcher on their new platform 😤😤😤'' LIKE#they're a COMPANY!! providing a good and/or service for currency!!#if you deem that good/service worth the asked-for currency then buy it and if you don't then don't!!#shut up about loyalty! shut up about the ''''relationship!'''' no company is your friend and no company is your ex!!#GOD. incidents like this make me glad that i'm a nobody#watcher entertainment

It JUST hit me how incredibly stupid the antipiracy ads in front of films were. Because like. I knew the were stupid, they were yelling "do not do this crime!" to EXACTLY the people who had just chosen NOT to do this crime BUT a lot of those people probably didn't know that crime was possible!
How many people saw an ad saying "downloading movies for free online is illegal" in front of a film they paid to see and thought "wait you can download movies for free online? Oh I'll start doing that then".
This was invisible to me as a kid cos I thought everyone knew how to torrent shit, but now the next generation only knows iPhone hot chip and lie, I realised like. They literally just advertised piracy to our less savvy parents.
"wow thanks for paying to see this film, did you know you didn't have to do that? Like you can just go online and pirate stuff. It's free! And you won't have to see this stupid bossy advert! JSYK it is stealing so make sure you cover your ass and don't get into trouble :)"
I hope they've updated the ads to show the lawbreaking kid getting a VPN before illegally downloading the film so it's stayed contemporary.
#this is media commentary btw#if it sounds like I'm saying get a vpn and torrent stuff that's just because I'm commenting on media#I would never advocate for anything illegal#I paid for netflix and prime and paramount plus to help support the artists who make content#then I found out they don't actually get a noticeable ammount of residuals from online streaming#Interesting fact that#you would think companies would want to pay artists residuals#that way they can guilt customers into paying for a service to “support artists”#But hey I guess they love piracy that's why they kept advertising it to us as kids
