Today is Dungeons & Daddies’s 5th Anniversary!

I haven’t been listening for nearly that long but the podcast and all its characters means a lot to me. Happy Anniversary!!!

Throwing the cropped sections under the cut because there’s a lot of stuff going on and I know Tumblr likes to throw half the pixel quality out the window. And also so I can ramble a bit about this piece!!!

This piece has been months in the making, possibly an entire year. And by that I mean I’ve had a sketch of the comp scribbled on my whiteboard for ages because I wanted to save this specifically for 5th anni art. Now onto design stuff!

(First off a random thought: I really love how the garlic knot came out, I kind of want it as an enamel pin.)

I knew I wanted to make this a stained glass piece since the beginning, but I was also going to add flowers at one point but quickly dropped the idea. It felt like too much and I also didn’t want to fuss over flower language assignments for everyone. I was also going to add Doodler tentacles, but also dropped that idea pretty early. Kind of on accident, right at the end, I figured out how to make it even more stained glass-like but taking a duplicated lineart underneath the regular layer and turning the brightness all the way down, then setting it to overlay and adding a guassian blur. It’s very subtle but it adds that tiny bit of depth that makes it look more real. As for shading on the lineart/gold, I tried adding more highlight on the characters who died but once I evened everything out it wasn’t as noticeable anymore so I’m throwing that thought here so the attempt at least known lol.

The order of characters only changed a little bit from my original comp, I flipped the Wilsons and the Oaks so the rainbow could work. As for the anchors, specifically in season 2, I lined them up to the teens since the season 1 anchors lined up with each dad:

Tony —> Scary: his death was the beginning of Scary’s betrayal arc and also Willy killed him.

Guitar Pick —> Taylor: it’s not really aligned with Taylor at all, but the anchor was with Glenn so I put it next to his blunt.

Scroll —> Normal: was only because it was the last left to give him, but there’s the whole scene of him and Hermie in the Green Room so it still works!

Garlic Knot —> Link: one of two that he broke, but the more significant of the two with him telling Grant he never wants to see him again.

Small notes on the season 1 anchors: I put the layer of mold in the overnight oats but you can’t really tell with the overlay. And to make the supper bowl more interesting I added the fantasy sodas mix they dumped into it. The lure of actually drawn before so I just traced my own art lol.

As for the other smaller triangles, it took me a bit to figure out what I wanted to put there. I didn’t even think of adding the vehicles until two days ago but I’m so glad I did. I don’t really have my own take on the mascot version of the Doodler (yet?) so I borrowed the design from one of the stickers in their merch shop. Teeny was terrifying as just a front facing head so I made him cute again.

In the outer circles, I put what I felt was the most significant quotes for each family. I really wanted to use “It’s okay to be angry, it’s not okay to be cruel” but it was just a little too long.

So I was wondering, what materials do you use for your traditional drawings (all the stuff from sketch to final piece)?

For the sketchbook pages, I mainly stuck to these materials though ^^ these guys are my…

PRIMARY MATERIALS

The green mechanical pencil on the picture on the left has 0.7mm colored lead in it! I alternate between blue and pink colored leads depending on what fits the overall color of the piece better.

Once I finish up the sketch, I line it with the black pilot ballpoint pen! I really like the control and feel of ballpoint pens for traditional lineart, because it gives a sort of variety in pressure I can’t seem to achieve with normal fineliners. I like to switch up the colors of the lineart too sometimes, hence the pink and red ballpens.

Then once the linearts done, I color them in with the stabilo highlighters, as pictured on the right! These guys are my FAVORITES. Sometimes when I’m just freely sketching I use the grey or peach mini stabilos. Although, they do tend to be a bit runny, ‘cause they’re meant for quick highlights and not multiple strokes over an area ^^; so you do have to be careful and quick when coloring with them to get an even coat of color!

SECONDARY MATERIALS

Pictured above are all my alcohol based markers! The four on the left are neon sharpies for when I need that extra eyestrainy kick. The three promarkers with the pointy cap were from when I was a freshman in uni and wanted to collect a full set of alcohol markers, but these were the only colors they had in stock and the college supply store ✌️ I’ve since given up on that dream because they were really expensive ;; they’re really good for sunny grassy scenes though! The last dark blue marker was from a set of other blue markers, but the others have since dried out… I use it when I really wanna darken up a page, like for night scenes!

This is my prismacolor set! I like to pair these with the markers, going in after the initial layer of color to give a bit of variety or shine. Some examples of when I use them would be for adding blush or giving hair a glossy sheen 👍

I use these when I really just wanna scribble something down wildly. I had these since I was in gradeschool and its quite frankly a miracle they still work? Oh, and the red and yellow twistable crayolas are missing because I vaguely remember giving them to some childhood friends for some reason 🤔

My fineliners and gellyrolls! Haven’t used these much recently tbh. I’d used them for class before, but I never really likes how flat the thickness tends to be :/ the brush tips and chisel tips are cool though. I used them for that one yellow bdubs doodle to try and see if my opinion of them has changed ^^ it hasn’t. Moving on…

Lastly, we have the special materials! The ones that don’t really go into any sets, or have nice applications. In order from left to right:

Wink of Stella - A brush pen that applies glitter through some sort of black magic. No idea how she works but I love her

Red Marvy Art Director 1400 - A red fine tip marker. Can’t go wrong with a bright red marker 👍

Golden Posca - My only posca marker. Figured if I should get one it might as well be something special.

Faber Castell Blue Highlighter - I use this alongside the stabilos. It has a really nice deep blue color ^^

I made the sketch for this a while ago, but then I let it sit for a while cause I didn't exactly know how I wanted to finish it. I could just slap some messy scribbly color on it as is, but I had stuff on the backside of both pages and my markers would've bled right through and wrecked that stuff. It also felt important enough to do a full render with clean lineart and smooth color, but idk lately full renders like that have felt kinda daunting and not as fun as it used to be. (Also my marker paper wasn't the right size and it would've ruined the composition lol) I think somewhere along the way, all that cleanness and smoothness sort of turned into perfectionism, which really goes against my whole personality and attitude about literally everything else lmao. I've never been a neat and organized and perfectionistic person EVER. But this messy colored sketching thing is really fun the whole way through. Sketching was always my favorite part of the process anyway. SOOOOO what I ended up doing with this was copying my sketch onto some tracing paper, and then transferring it onto a different page that didn't have stuff on the back or the page and then colored that. Plus that means I still have the original uncolored sketch in case I want to rework it later. I'd thought this might make a nice wrap-around cover if The Watcher was a physical book - you could fold it in half and slap a title over Grzzt's head haha. I'm lowkey rambling now so ANYWAYS, hope ya like it!

Droppin’ a little “making of” for the Affection!!! comic!

concept sketch > rough sketch > clean-ish sketch

Ramblings under the cut:

1. Mikey’s line in the concept sketch was originally different! I changed it to “On it!” because I wanted the whole comic to read snappier (and I’m pretty sure it’s a line the boys have used on the show when they’re teamworking). This sketch was probably done in under 10mins because of how scribbly everything is. Maybe even just 5mins.

When I look at it, I can still feel past!Anabelle desperately trying to convey “These lines are Leo’s arms and they are wide open in panel 2, okay future!Anabelle??” - I spend months at a time focused on gesture drawing practice but it always feels like I forget everything when I have an idea I want to draw out. :’) But then again, so long as the concept sketch conveys the information you need it to, then it’s doing its job, right? Let it look stupid. It’s fun to laugh at afterwards anyway.

2. Rough sketch! This is where I decided I wanted to push Leo’s dramatics, to see if I could capture some of the fun expressions we’ve seen on the show. I messed with the panel layout for quite a bit because having them static like in the sketch wasn’t bringing in the energy I wanted (also thought it was funny to have panels tilted like that because they look similar to the top of Leo’s head).

3. This clean-ish sketch served as my base for the lineart. Sometimes I do one more pass on the sketch just to make sure the character proportions and important stuff are in order, but I was really itching to clean this one up.

Every time I get to the lineart stage for a Rise fanart, I’m always looking to see how closely I can mimic the style of the show while maintaining the liveliness of my sketches. I’ve never thought about it in depth before but I guess I approach it like a master study. I’m not always like this with fanart but the art on Rise is kinda special to me and figuring out how to ape it brings me joy.

Other fun facts:

CSP’s text editor functions aren’t that advanced (in Pro v1 anyway, which is what I use) so I had to manually adjust each character in both “Miguel!” and “Affection!!!” to get them to curve that nicely. No pain no gain, amirite? Lucky this comic isn’t that dialogue heavy, haha.

I’ve been alternating between two brushes for my linework - a smooth one and a gritty/pencil-like one. I actually used the latter for this comic but I guess I must have messed with the brush density at some point because you can’t really see the texture in the lines. Oops?

Staff doesn't care about Terras anymore and I think they should hand over total ownership (Admins, mods and all) to people who actually care. I love Terras and don't want to see them die off, but it feels inevitable now.

honestly im tired of them playing hot potato with this project, it fails under any ownership its given and any passion that was once put in (arguably an incredibly small amount since its obvious this was a cashgrab from day 1) is completely wiped away

there are much better species and worlds to put your time and money into. what does terras offer?

a lazy staff team that is so focused on entirely separate projects that they cant even shit out a halloween event, and that gave so little of a fuck that they waited a full month after the birthday event was over to even raffle the designs, and that was seemingly held together by one staff member so much so that when that member left the team, the server had rule violations sitting for days at a time

a site that, despite having almost nothing added in the way of extensions, runs like shit because staff doesnt want to abide by recommended image sizes and overloaded the whole thing with enormously heavy images, to the point that now even after the images have been compressed oh so slightly, the site still runs like shit

a site that will never have any interesting changes or additions made (even the most simple) because staff is so incompetent with their own tools they fundamentally do not understand how lorekeeper works. this wouldnt be so much of an issue if they would hire someone experienced in lk (their site coder has said they have no idea how lk works and theyve never used it), or take on volunteers to add the most basic functionality, but they wont do that because they are again, so incompetent that they think a volunteer could just delete the whole site which is fundamentally impossible unless you give them your fucking admin login

no lore MINIMAL lore about, of all things, a stupid new subtype that nobody wanted. no publicly available lore about terra planet, society, anatomy, physiology, or even why these stupid things have fishbowls on their heads. if you want even a scrap of information, you have to scrounge through months upon months of messages in staff-answer, or play a stupid ass ARG

an abysmal design approval process. you will have your design denied for trait restrictions that are listed nowhere, and that staff let pass with their friends 2 days ago. if you ever try to bring up any terra on the ml as an example that they have approved the same design aspect before, you will ALWAYS be knocked dowm with “that design was approved before we updated the guides/it slipped through the cracks” even when the design isnt even a week old

no MYO slot sales, no fun opportunities for community interaction, fucking hell not even any events anymore because staff dont give enough of a fuck to slap something together for the month of october.

lazy adopts thrown together for a quick buck to the point they will have scribbly lineart, color spilling out, and unclear design aspects that they will shit out and sell to you for $90+.

a server that is so overloaded with toxic positivity that you will get dogpiled even for saying you dont like a certain video game.

just give up on terras at this point. its been a year and a half of this shit and it has never been at even a BASELINE standard of how a species should operate.

newly released species these days all think its acceptable to drop with just a concept and an empty lorekeeper and call it a day. i think everyone who participates in closed species needs to collectively come together and raise the standards that were set by the mother of all cashgrabs: chams. we need to stop enabling the species owners who give NOTHING to the project, the ones who release with no lore, shops, or trait sheets. i think we all should take our money to more fulfilling creators (in my experience, smaller species projects are typically so much more fleshed out than popular new ones hitting the market, but they often lack the publicity to flourish) and stop sinking money and so much time into people who dont put in any effort, and who dont WANT to put in any effort because they have no passion for the project outside of a paycheck.

This is Fade and he is faceless prince in Adventure time he is a blank person.

Blank persons come in many skin tones.

They love to steal faces of other people and things.

But Faceless prince or Fade does not do that unless he is threatened to do so and once he takes a face he can copy the move set of the foe if he wins he gets to keep the face as a prize if he loses he won't be able to take the face of the foe he lost too.

He has a anti gravity head that is not connected to his body and his crown floats also.

Blank person's can lightly shapeshift their bodies to be stronger but the species are still learning how to change into other forms.

He only goes buff when he can't steal the same face twice because he lost the battle to his foe.

When he was younger he wished for muscle then the next day he had them.

He now uses his new buff form to bet up evildoers and help his kingdom build when disasters appear.

His abs are as hard as steel, he is very smart, has super speed, has tons of stamina, and has super strength.

Fade is friends(in love) with sweet egg sushi princess but rivals with Spriup.

These are my Adventure time Oc's i just made up.

Sus or Susan is a Sweet Egg sushi princess.

She has her food form and a human form.

She wears a ramen bowl royal hat on her head.

She has a pet Spriup which is a puppy that is made out of just spirals and that dog has a human form also.

Spriup is a male.

Her "skin" is brown rice and the purple band is the seaweed nori wrap dyed purple.

I drew both their Human and Normal forms.

Sus or Susan is the princess of Manga Kingdom.

Her pet is actually another prince from another land called Sketcher.

Spriup is her protector.

He is a dog made up of curls and spirals.

He has the ability to drain people's lineart to nothing by just touching them with either his hand's, feet or his tongue. (That's that gold S in the middle of his feet and under his hands. On the middle of his tongue.)

Most of the time Spiral dogs are genderless at times then slowly gain a gender when they are in love with a certain person only with a strong bond.

If you are lineless the sketch dogs will be shocked but will remove their own lineart then use it as a weapon to morph it.

But they tend to fight with one another for fighting experience and to challenge other species. (Spriup is secretly in love with Susan or Egg sushi princess but never shows it around her.)

He likes to act tough around the princess in battle and Spiral dogs only fight genderless in battle so they won't be distracted.

He has only lineart eyes but he can see fine.

The curls on his body are all the assassin's and all the evildoers he has defeated and drained of all their lineart which kills them.

He also has the powers of each of the enemies he and Susan has encountered but also the weakness.

He can be a serious character unless Susan gives him a chew toy he gets a little distracted when she gets in the room.

He may blush or pretend to do royal work and make up excuses to why he is blushing.

Sus is Susan's nickname and she is a laid-back princess.

She enjoys the music of the different places.

She doesn't want to do any work at all.

All she wants to do is have fun and hangout with Spriup if he has free time.

( Spiral dogs come in different colors but when they are born they are just like lineart scribbles without color with a dog nose when they are older they lose the dog nose but they can still smell while also gain colors.)

And Spiral dogs do not have fur it's skin.

I drew Zagiup in human and normal forms.

He also has a tailmouth. (A tail with a mouth on it.)

Zagiup a dog made up of Zigzags.

He has the ability to drain people's lineart to nothing by just touching them with either his hand's, feet or his tongue and on his chest.

This is another scribble dog type from Sketcher.

Past me found this sketch unfinished in the trash at school so I did finish him up.

This is Elmer and he is the Emo Prince in Adventure time he is a half beast/human but this is his human form.

The X symbol on his hand is his transformer so he can change into a eldritch monster but this is his human form.

He loves to hear the despair and woe of people.

And mess with their heads a little.

He feeds on the worry of others but sometimes tries to help people with their problems if he's full.

He likes spicy and sweet foods if sadness is low.

He loves to play the drums and guitar.

He likes werewolves or whywolves more than vampires.

And Curl poodles do not have fur its hair and skin.

Puffodles a dog made up of curls.

This is another scribble dog type from Sketcher.

This is Pomuckles.

Pomuckles has the ability to makes people laugh uncontrollably but by just touching them with either her hand's, feet or her tongue just like her brothers Spriup and Zagiup but she can also have the ability to drain people's lineart if the comedy charm doesn't work. (That's that copper C in the middle of her feet and under her hands.)

(On the middle of her tougue and the blue her side is the lineart drain side.) Most of the time Curl dog are genderless at times that gain a gender when they are in love with a certain person only with a strong bond.

She is a very shy and a kind girl she tends to try the make whole world love one another and make peace while also laughing.

She doesn't like to fight unless threaten by a person or a animal.

She loves to bake and cook but mostly cupcakes.

She loves to make up new flavors that pop into her head.

She secretly loves Faceless prince but he doesn't notice her.

(She always brings him sweets whenever he meets Sweet egg sushi princess.)

Spriup loves is sister and would never let anyone hurt her.

Zagiup would destroy anyone that broke his middle sister's heart.

She would love to date any monster but found out Hug wolves exists.

She later gave up on Faceless Prince since he never notices her.

I hand drew Urn Daisuki and he is a pure blooded Hugwolf.

This is the before episode fanart of a hugwolf and it's just my take on a Hugwolf.

He is fast, strong he also has more features than a normal hugwolf.

He has a heart tail, has hearts on his ears, hearts on his knees and a heart tongue.

He can also talk only if he wants to.

He likes Puffoddle but is too scared to ask her out.

I used a base as a ref for Urn Daisuki holding a sign.

I hand drew her myself and she is Prismo like in my lore.

This is Mortal Retrospectra and she is Dream Traveler.

She travels through dreams to fight people's nightmares.

But she needs the bring the nightmares into the real world to tame them.

She also helped all the oc's I explained before hand with wishes to improve themselves or add on.

She has a yellow tongue and a green ear mouths with pink teeth.

Her eyes is light green with raspberry triangles around it with black pupils.

She has light brown skin, metallic blue pajamas with like blue cloud tips on her shirt and pants.

She also has a cloud in the center of her shirt. 

She has a raspberry six stared tail.

She feet are curved pointed.

Her hair is silver cloud hair with a Z symbol on top of her head and a purple bang. 

Her hair is long enough to cover her mouth.

I hand drew her myself and this is her wishcaster form.

She uses wish orbs to teleport things or give powers to wishermakers.

I did this myself on Ms Paint.

Her skin is raspberry with a star design with a light green eye with a khaki colored background.

This is Retrospectra's brown cone shaped time room.

Her mortal body slumbers at the curved bottom of the cone in a room.

I hand drew her myself.

Issick is a half human and her beast form is a deer/werewolf hybrid.

Her beast form is metallic purple, blue, and green with red eyes with green.

(Need to add more to her story.)

Her half human form has light brown skin, metallic blue ears and purple hair, a gold collar, silver shirt with a green spiral with a orange triangle also with metallic green bands with metallic blue sleeves, metallic green claws, metallic yellow pants with gold button on the top of the her pants, pink pockets with purple on the top, pink bands on her pants with light green bands.

Also she doesn't wear shoes the blue things are her hooves that look shoe like.

She has a blue and purple tail with a red >3 ribbon with a gold band on her tail.

Her tail kind of looks like a devil's tail. She also has a metallic red backpack with a :3 face on it with a curly leather head strap like hair.

 In her left hand she is holding a gold dagger with a red blade and in her right hand she is holding a yellow hook.

She is single.

 He is Issick's "brother"/best friend.

Chiaroscuro is a candle holder being that can change forms like animal candle holders and humanoid shaped candle forms but only in a silhouette like form.

He has all black metal skin and has a silver eye.

He floats instead of walking and he eats candle wax by his holders.

Chiaroscuro means the treatment of light and shade in drawing and painting.

And the candle holder cat was also from a thrift store but instead of silver and black it was originally gold and black.

I made this a new candle holder form.

I based Walton is this broken playmobil toy I own. 

I got them both from a thrift store.

Weirdly Specific Artist Ask Game

Didn't see a lot of artist ask games, wanted to make a silly one.

artist to artist Please clean your art. Thats why people are bothering you, your traditional sketches look like scribbles, if you lightly doodle with your pencil and then do it harder / do the lineart with a pen it will look much better And if you don't want smudging a kneaded eraser can be good, but if you dont like those one of those big pink erasers will do great IMO. For digital art: If you are drawing with a stylus I recommend correction, it matters what software you are using but i recommend medibang if you are on laptop, if you're on a tablet i recommend ibispaint but i do not know how to turn on correction on ibispaint. If you are drawing with a mouse / mousepad I still recommend correction, for me when i drew with a mousepad my correction was at 18 and my lines became not wobbly, not scribbly ect. If you are drawing with your finger I never had problems personally with drawing on a phone, so i cant really help. Tips for traditional art If you want to make a sketch on the paper first and then transfer it to digitally usually that translates really good for me. Personally, i dont really enjoy self inserts and stuff im just trying to help you get better at art :) I don't believe people saying "Oh its bAD" are good, because they arent giving you advice. i tried to give you advice that i see fits But i dont know what you're on, so i can't really give that much. - Another artist

Tommy had finished streaming and started writing to you cause he was bored. So ya'll "talked" and shit until you asked randomly asked how he looked like. So like the ass he is just wrote 'handsome', clearly trying to as vague as possible to piss you off. And it worked. But he eventually told you the details you needed and soon felt the tingly feeling as you drew on his arm. And honestly he has never felt so soft after you finished drawing, you had drawn him. And the art style was adorable. You were adorable. What you do is adorable. He loves you really.

But he couldn't careless it was still so so pretty.

He quickly wrote 'where are u tho?' in a scribbly writing. And so you quickly yet smoothly drew yourself next to his little drawing of himself. Tommy quickly grabbed his phone and took a picture of the both of you next to each other before the ink disappears. 'Can I post it on my Insta?' 'Meh, sure why tf not. Crop me out tho or smt.' 'Kay woman/big man/big (inital)' And so he did. 'TommyInnit MY SOULMATE IS BETTER THAN YOURS LOOK AT THIS MASTERPIECE' He made sure to crop you out and blur your signature. He honestly got a kick out of some of the comments he got although there were some who decided to hate on your art. He lowkey highkey got mad at those comments but those were instantly attacked by his fans. Some of them even joked on how he drew that himself just because he was lonely which was a complete lie. 'Wilbur Soot I don't think the child drew that cause he can't draw for shit' Now he was just ticked off- He was going to respond but got cut off by a notification telling him was tagged in something. He clicked on it cause why the fuck not? He was caught off guard when he saw the pictures and when he saw the username.

Ayy I'm glad, sub preds are very rare and super fun. Ngl probably one of my better decisions was letting him be his own character and get into shenanigans.

And if you dig through his tag (#Kurt) you should be able to find pretty much everything I’ve drawn of him (also cuz there’s only so far I’m willing to go before my old art makes me cringe). But I still kinda like these ones, even if they’re dated.

Beside the second half of the statement is a person with closed eyes. A thought bubble points to them with an X and checmark inside, the contemplation of incorrect vs correct, wrong vs right. At the bottom is a speech bubble pointing off screen and reading, "This is the case for me."

4: OP's brows furrow angrily as they look to the side. "Maybe I would've realized this sooner if OCD wasn't represented the way it is now," they say.

Their eyes widen, shoulders drooped as they stare at the ground, weary. Their thought bubble is full of scribbles, a chaotic cluttered mind. this is just a bunch of text and barely a comic sorry, but i really wanted to talk about this stuff even if i don't have the energy to properly draw

First off- Love your art. Big, hard yet somehow soft and warm. I can't really explain but I feel like all your characters smell great and give serotonine-filled hugs.

I would just love to know your drawing process. All your lines and colors are so clean, so straight, so nice. How do sketches look? Whats the walkthrough. Tell me your secrets. I beg of you.

The tools I use are as follows

a small Wacom Intuos tablet

Clip Studio Paint (sketch, lineart, flat colours, shading)

Photoshop (textures, backgrounds and lighting effects, colour correction, abusing the Liquify tool to try to fix anatomy mistakes)

Sketches

My sketches usually look something like this and involve a lot of scribbling and experimentation and use of the Transform tool until I end up with something I like. I kinda just feel out the shapes as I go and am constantly redoing and adjusting things.

The different colours are just so I can differentiate between the different elements and it doesn't all just become a giant scribbly mess when I'm trying to line it after.

Lines

As for my lineart, half of it is just a result of practice. I've been doing lineart + cell shading as my main style for over ten years now so I like to think I've managed to acquire some decent line control in that time.

The other half is a good stabilizer and pen pressure settings on the brushes I use.

Before Clip Studio Paint, I used Paint Tool SAI for my lineart because I could never get line results I was happy with in Photoshop, but not only does CSP have phenomenal stabilizer settings, its vector layers feature (which automatically turns your lines into vector shapes regardless of the brush you use!) has also made the process way easier by allowing me to edit and adjust my lines after the fact.

The one tip I can share when it comes to lineart is to take advantage of momentum. I never draw directly on my lineart layer; I make a new layer above it, draw on that one, and then merge it down every few minutes. This lets me use momentum to carry my brush strokes and then erase the parts that overlap without worrying about messing up the stuff I already have, resulting in smoother lines than if I had tried to precisely draw a straight line the entire time.

In the example above, the green line is on its own layer and can be easily erased without damaging the black lines around it.

I also tend to use a smaller brush for interior/detail lines and thicker ones for the outer edges of a shape just because I think it looks nice.

Process in General

Honestly, my process is just a lot of trial and error. I draw a line, undo it, draw a line, undo it. I sketch several hairstyles or outfits on different layers and then swap between them like some weird dress up game until I decide which to keep. I experiment with adjusting the hue and saturation of flat colours until I find something I like. I’m a very “make it up as I go” kind of artist, and really, creator in general; and rarely is the finished piece the result of any sort of plan.

That being said, I do have a general order in which I do things:

Sketch a bunch of random things until I find something I like

Merge all sketch layers and reduce the layer opacity until it’s very faint

Make a lineart layer above, then a layer to actually draw on above that

Draw the lineart using the techniques mentioned above (I often jump around and line different sections randomly), fixing any wonky parts of the sketch as I go

Make a separate layer below the finished lineart for each differently-coloured element (eg: hair layer, skin layer, pants layer, etc.) and fill with fill bucket*

Tweak each layer’s colour until vaguely happy with it

Make a layer below all other layers, select the entire interior of the lineart, fill it with black to fill any tiny gaps left by the fill bucket

Make a layer above all other layers, set it to multiply, draw shadows with a light grey-blue-purple colour (I shade one element at a time by selecting the area and then drawing within that selection on the shading layer)

Repeat step 7 with a layer set to Overlay and a light-medium grey for highlights

Open the image in Photoshop and apply gradients, patterns, lighting etc.

Notice all the mistakes it’s too late to fix and start second guessing the entire piece, say “screw it”, save it as a .png, and post anyway!

And I think that’s about it.

Sorry if that was confusing, I’m not sure how much previous knowledge of these programs you have or how much detail I should go into, but I hope maybe some of it was interesting and/or educational lol

*In case anyone’s brave enough to try using this as a tutorial and isn’t sure what I mean here:

CSP lets you set the lineart layer as a reference layer and still fill the colour on a different layer as though the lines were present on that layer. In other programs you may have to select the area you want to colour on the lineart layer manually with the magic wand tool and then move to the corresponding colour layer before filling it in.

If you use a program where you have to select the area manually, you may want to keep all your tiny detailed lines on a separate lineart layer just so you don’t have to spend time selecting all the small gaps between them. Alternatively, you could just fill it by hand with a brush.

notes : okay, so here’s my logic— i plan on doing three days, and back in november 5, i planned on doing 15 days— but then i said nvm because i got too stressed out so,, yeah. three days, so sorry :((

YOU’RE PRACTICALLY multitalented at this point, at least to todoroki shouto. you’re humble, and he finds it amazing due to the fact that you remain humble— you don’t shove it in people’s faces, and sometimes he wonders if you even know how talented you are.

besides being in the hero course in UA, and being his classmate— he knows how much you like art. if you’re waiting for aizawa-sensei, he finds his mismatched eyes watching you scribble doodles onto your sketchbook.

on saturday afternoons in your room, he watches you fill your cup with water— water droplets dispersing from the tips of your hands, as you prepare your watercolor.

watching the pigment disperse onto the sheet of paper, your brush gliding gently against the thick sheet of paper— the sounds of the brush were almost therapeutic. he almost understood why you spent most of your free time watching bob ross (if you weren’t training, spending time with him, or eating)

he’s on the opposite side of your bed, and you look ethereal— basking into the sunlight of the fine weekend, he watches in silence as you erase any stray pencil strokes, and draw on more precise lines onto the lineart.

“what’s on your mind?” you ask, but you don’t look up— you’re too focused onto your art piece, and he couldn’t blame you. he wonders how someone’s mind could create such a piece of work.

but then again, it’s you. you’re unpredictable, in the best way possible.

he knows that artists don’t really like being asked to draw people, even someone as dense as todoroki shouto would get that. but he wants to take that shot in the dark, he’s been thinking about this for a long time— so why not get it out?

“do you think.. you can draw me?”

a smile erupts onto your face, and you flip a page— practically abandoning your piece as soon as he asked. “i never thought you’d ask, shouto.”

he smiles. well— that worked for sure, but now what? what does someone do when they’re being drawn? “just sit comfortably, shou.” you say, as you draw a circle

shouto sits stiffly against your bed, his hands are on his lap— and he’s holding his breath, trying hard not to move as you sketch out his features.

“stay still. oh, and you can breathe,” you chuckle, and he exhales. frankly enough— you’ve wanted to draw shouto for the longest time. his face was just an entire pinterest moodboard, and it felt like you’ve drawn him a thousand times already.

yet— you don’t actually have a real artwork of him. not a completed one anyway.

“shouto, try to relax yourself.” you put down your sketchpad for a moment, and your hand dances along his shoulders. it feels like you have a rock for a boyfriend, truth to be told.

he sighs, and he melts into your touch— it never failed to calm his tense muscles down. you move back to your sketchbook, and his position is much more relaxed, toned down to your liking.

a cerulean and steel colored eye stares at you, observing how focused you look right now. he wouldn’t mind seeing this for the remainder of his life, that is— if you allowed him.

you’re adding extra shadings, and his heart is skipping beats. he doesn’t know why he’s so excited to view your art, not like he hasn’t flipped through your art portfolio before (with and without your knowledge, but shh). but it always amazed him.

“you can look now,” you say, while you’re signing the corner of your page with your signature. it’s a simple sketch of him— just a pencil drawing so far. yet, he can actually see the texture you’ve placed in everything.

down to the pencil strokes that you’ve created for hair, clothes— even his scar. it’s perfect, and even if you claim that it’s not exactly what you call ‘best’

he loves it, so much.

you’re talking about how you want to ink it as soon as possible, but he’s already pulling you onto his lap— burying his face into your chest.

“i like it a lot.” he says, but it’s slightly muffled. he’s tracing patterns onto your back, and you chuckle

“i didn’t know you liked art that much.” he hums, while you’re putting away your sketchbook so any result of cuddling wouldn’t crease the pages.

“maybe i could join your art sessions next time.” he connects a warm kiss onto your lips, and your place your hands onto his shoulders

“sure thing, shouto. though— be prepared for potential mess.”

“i wouldn’t mind getting messy, especially if it’s with you.”

you choke slightly, “do you know the weight of your words, shouto?” you’re unsure if he meant it in a innocent way, or he had suggestive intent in his words.

he looks up— chin pressing against your chest, while he shines a knowing smile to you. “absolutely, love.”
