What was the point of giving all faunus darkvision if it's only used like. Twice in the entire series?
#rwde#bruh think of all the night raids the fang could be doing#and its unlikely that humans would have sundown towns since they cant see in the dark#how tf did humans manage to become top dog when they cant even see around the clock?#no darkvision no claws no fangs#was it access to resources or smth? were faunus more scattered at the time and therefore couldnt organize?#wor faunus episode makes it sound like the populations used to be equal until the humans attacked#side note: world of remnant sucks ass. out of everyone why was qrow/vic misogyny chosen to narrate?#it's so painful to listen to straight exposition. im dying squirtle#tho doing several in a row really highlights just how man centric this whole damn thing is#in the schnee episode there's literally no mention of nicholas's mother or wife. not even his DAUGHTER#it just talks abt him and jacques#why couldnt they have made willow a villain? spoiled rich daddys girl taking over and worsening global exploitation would make sense#and it wouldn't have sidelined yet another mother of a main character#seriously theres not a single mom that has more story weight than the husband#god this series makes me mad. it could have been SO GOOD in the hands of anyone even halfway competent

The Noah Plan (Noco Oneshot)
“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but everything Duncan’s saying is true.”
Gwen dropped into her chair next to Cody in French. It was a typical Wednesday, and Cody and Gwen just came from their History class.
Gwen didn’t like Cody at first. At all. Cody knew that. But he persevered (he didn’t leave her alone) and eventually she grew to tolerate him. And then be kind-of friends with him. Now Cody got to listen to her complaints about… everyone.
“Courtney has a major stick up her butt.”
Yup, there it was.
“Why do you say that?” Cody asked.
“She’s just so controlling about, well, everything! I can’t stand being her history partner. It’s all ‘Gwen we have to do our project on Jacques Cartier’, ‘Gwen, you have to indent exactly 1.25 centimeters so we’re all on the same page’, ‘Gwen, you have terrible handwriting’. Ugh, everything is her way or the highway.”
Cody and Gwen had the same History class, but seats were assigned. Their teacher promised to change them every quarter, and thankfully, it was close to ending. Cody was a social guy, but Ezekiel was impossible to talk to. And impossible to work with. His denial of everything related to prejudice of the early settlers meant they couldn’t do reports on 75% of events. And also, he had an eye on a classmate of his that he was hoping to sit next to.
“Settle down students,” the teacher called to the students.
Gwen lowered her voice. “And the worst part? She complains about how stuck up Noah is.”
Cody perked up. “Yeah?”
“She apparently shares every club with him. Model UN, Debate, Student Government, National Honor Society. I think that’s too many clubs, but whatever. Anyways, she’s always saying that he’s prudish abt fucking like… I don’t know nerd stuff. And she celebrates whenever he skips out on Student Gov. for Book Club.”
“What day is Book Club?”
“Uh, Wednesdays, why?”
“Do you think they’ll let me join?”
“Why wouldn’t they?”
“I mean if they’re halfway through the book.”
“Right. Well, I’m in Book Club and we’re not. You’re welcome to join, but since when did you read?”
“I like reading,” Cody dragged his eyes from the board to Gwen. “Always have.”
“...Right. I just joined for something to put on my college applications.”
“So mind if I join?”
“I guess not.”
“Sweet!” Cody exclaimed, a little loudly.
The teacher whipped her head around to face Cody, with a stern frown on her face.
Cody grinned sheepishly. “Désolé.”
That afternoon, Cody entered an English classroom where the Book Club met. There were probably 7 people in the room, not including the teacher. Cody took his seat next to Gwen. No sign of Noah.
After he sat down, the club began to discuss the first chapter of the book they started reading. The teacher had given Cody a copy to catch him up to speed, and Cody read the first three pages before he got bored. How did people read this boring junk for fun? Once he hit the fourth page, he blankly stared at the words and counted down the minutes until he would leave. He probably wouldn’t come back. Noah didn’t even show up.
Cody took a glance at the clock- 3:29.
Then the door creaked open.
Cody turned his gaze towards the door to see Noah slipping in. He sat himself in an empty chair next to some Grade 9 kid that Cody didn’t know.
Noah didn’t say much for the last 30 minutes. But at least he was there! Next week, Cody was going to talk with him.
But that did mean he had to read the book.
~~~
Noah wasn’t there next week.
Cody had read up to chapter seven, just for Noah to not show up. He felt annoyed, betrayed even. By a boy he didn’t even know.
He had spent his entire week thinking about what he would say and his strategies on how he would talk to Noah specifically. Well he didn’t actually know much about Noah. He knew that he was friends with Owen, and that he liked books, and that he was sarcastic. Cody had been working on his humor. It was going… well, maybe it’s good that Noah didn’t show up.
Cody walked out to meet Tyler, his ride to the mall. He pulled out his phone- as expected, no texts or calls.
“Hey, Cody!”
Cody looked up to see Owen running straight at him.
“Oh, hey Owen!” Cody waved as Owen approached. “It’s been too long man.”
Owen gave Cody a fist bump. “Yeah! We should totally hang out sometime. I don’t think we’ve properly hung out since summer.”
“Sure! I’m free-”
“Move it along, Lunchbox.”
Cody shot his head up. Owen was the one, the only, Noah.
“Noah! What do you think about Cody taking a ride with us?”
Noah cupped a hand around his ear. “Huh?”
“Would you mind-”
“I actually already have a ride,” Cody told Owen. But really, he wished he didn’t. “And I’m going to the mall, I have work today.”
“Oh, Noah too! He works at that bookstore on the third floor on weekdays, except for Thursday. I was going to drop him off and then go home. You can tell whoever’s driving you that you don’t need a ride.”
“I’m going with Tyler and he’s going to the same place, so I can’t tell him no now. I’ll see you later Owen.”
“Totally! Text me when you get off work, we can make plans.”
“Sounds good. See you man!”
Owen waved Cody as he walked over to Noah and away.
He works at that bookstore on the third floor on weekdays, except for Thursday.
New plan.
~~~
Cody decided he would stay at Book Club one more time before quitting for good. He couldn’t keep up with the reading anymore. And Noah wasn’t even there most of the time. He thinks.
And maybe Noah would show up if he stayed one more time.
Lucky for Cody, he was right.
This time, Cody made sure to make a few comments on the book. He got too nervous to make any jokes, but Noah nodded in agreement to one of his opinions.
That counted as a win.
That Friday, Cody was ready. He knew Noah had work that afternoon. He was going to go straight up to him and start a conversation. About books. Because Noah liked books.
In History, Cody gazed from his seat in the middle to Noah in the front. He had nice hair. It looked soft and sleek. He took really good care of it. In STEM, he took occasional glances backwards to see Noah staring boredly at the screen, eyes blinking slowly. And in English (where he sat next to Noah) he actually got to talk to him! It was rare that anyone was allowed to say a word in English, but peer review came in handy. He got to comment on Noah’s work, but it was kind of hard to find anything to comment on. It was too good.
Noah handed Cody his essay, margins filled with edits and suggestions. “Cool topic. But you have syntax issues.”
Cody’s eyes glanced over Noah’s edits and chuckled. But he did make the essay more readable.
Oh, to be an English person.
Before he knew it, school was over, and Cody was yet again bumming a ride with Tyler to the mall. He took a quick trip to visit Trent at his job at the record store, and after a while left to the bookstore.
He first stepped in, and scanned the cash register. Noah was behind the counter. He quickly averted his vision and decided to browse the selection.
First of all, he decided that he needed a nice book. One that would impress Noah. But one that he would still enjoy.
Then he was reminded that he didn’t like to read.
He moved from the Thriller section to the Non-Fiction section, and picked up a book on the history of Physics. He wanted to get a headstart since he planned on taking Physics for his last year. Plus, it would make him seem smart. He really needed that after what happened in English.
He went to the counter and placed the book down. Noah scanned it.
“Oh, hey Noah!” Cody said, acting like he hadn’t seen him earlier. “I didn’t know you worked here.”
Noah glanced up. “Yeah, hey. That’ll be $20.99.”
“Do you take Physics this year?”
“Uh, yeah.”
“Cool, cool, I take Chemistry. I’m just trying to get a headstart for next year.”
“Good for you.”
Cody chuckled awkwardly. “Okay, I guess I’ll see you later Noah.”
“See you…” Noah snapped his finger in silence for a moment, “dude.”
Cody waved and left.
Well that was awkward.
It now hit Cody- Noah didn’t even know his name.
However, Cody was dedicated. Maybe going straight up to Noah wasn’t his greatest plan. He was going to find another way, and it was going to be through Owen.

whats your favorite part abt the jacques/olivia dynamic? :-)
i’d say it’s the banter and interactions!! jacques seems like, as part of vfd, he hasn’t talked about himself or his past very much to anyone, so in the show I love seeing him talk about his past with olivia and have her listen intently. they also have lots of back-and-forth, bantering dialogue (“how fast can we get there?” “how fast can you drive?”) and I just really enjoy the companionship between them. I’m of the firm opinion that great romances are build on a foundation of great friendships, and they have such sweet interactions that show how well they work together. even if there was no romance involved, they’d be such good friends and I love to see it.
#THBAK YOOU FOR THISSS#I’ve been going feral about ASOUE lately esp Jacques/Olivia ans Jacquelyn/Olivia and I needed someone to feed into it hahaha#~lita’s rants~#~lita’s asks~#~juliet tag~#jacques snicket#olivia caliban#asoue#snickiban#jalivia#jacques snicket x olivia caliban#jacques/olivia#jacques x olivia

verdict on different albums (under a cut bc Long):
Angels: the show itself? fine, but not really my thing. imo it feels a little like Wonderland (Frank Wildhorn) But Make It Christian™. Cuccioli? slayed. he played Lucifer and consequently had the most unintentionally funny song in the entire show: "I'm Not Bad" (which is—you guessed it!—Lucifer saying he's "not bad, just complicated" while ensemble members talk abt how evil he is; i could not keep a straight face listening to it, but know that Cuccioli Commits)
The New Picasso: i'm really fascinated by the story! from what i could find, it's about a young up-and-coming artist trying to make a name for himself and become "the new Picasso", but unfortunately i couldn't find any more details than that. Some of the plot beats (if i'm interpreting them correctly) feel somewhat Wildhorn-esque—bits of it gave me Death Note Musical vibes. Cuccioli plays the villain in this one as well, and he's got some good songs in this one :)
And the World Goes Round: this one's a revue of pieces by Kander and Ebb, which threw me for a bit bc i wasn't expecting to hear songs from Chicago and Cabaret. Cuccioli has a couple songs in this, but his best is "Kiss of the Spider Woman", which he nails. Beyond that, this album didn't stick out to me too much, but part of that might be that i don't interact with too many revues
Meet John Doe: probably my favorite all-around! The show takes place in 1930s New York, focusing on a reporter's attempts to keep her job by inventing a called "John Doe", whose protests against society quickly make him a national sensation. This show feels like a mix of Newsies and Dames At Sea. Cuccioli is the newspaper owner and, once again, the main antagonist. He's not in very many songs, but the songs he's in are unsurprisingly my favorites <3
Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living In Paris: from what i read online, this one doesn't have much of a structured plot either, but it is probably my favorite musically. All of the songs are English translations of songs by Jacques Brel. Cuccioli has a couple solo songs, of which "Jackie" and "Funeral Tango" are probably my faves. (this show probably has the biggest cws though; i distinctly remember it having some strong language and drug references.)
unexpected side effect of my j&h hyperfixation is that tonight i became utterly obsessed w robert cuccioli again and discovered like 5 cast albums he's in that i'd never heard of before
anyway guess what i'm gonna be listening to the next few days :D
#robert cuccioli#the last one actually makes me want to seek out more of jacques brel's music just bc i liked it so much#did anyone ask for my reviews of these? no#am i sharing them anyway? yes#in regards to 'i'm not bad' in angels: PLEASE SOMEONE LISTEN TO IT#part of me can't believe it's a real actual song they made him sing and i need someone else to confirm that it really is that ridiculous#my opinions boil down to essentially:#best all-around: meet john doe#best story-wise: the new picasso#best musically: jacques brel is alive and well and living in paris#most memorable single song: 'i'm not bad' from angels (<- not necessarily a compliment)

lying on the floor thinking abt how ironwood embodied and was corrupted by the ugliest characteristics of the god of light; the desire for absolute control, the latent hostility and disdain for human emotion, the absolute inability to see beyond his own designs for the world and his perceived creations—even ironwood’s obsessive single-minded focus on getting penny on a leash no matter the cost echoes the way light responded each time salem defied him—
& like. ozpin is absent throughout v7 but oscar devotes most of his time on screen to prying ironwood away from that path, with negligible success—there’s the beginning of a turn after jacques’ arrest, yes, but by the end of the volume it’s crystal clear that ironwood went for the “tell the truth, protect and rally mantle” plan because it made him feel in control of the situation again and the instant cinder and salem shattered that illusion of control, he recoiled from it and lashed out at the allies he perceived as having tricked him into letting his guard down—and ozpin doesn’t return until oscar’s effort in this regard has finally and irrevocably failed. which keeps sticking in my brain as important, particularly in light of watts in 6.4 saying that ozpin is the only person who stood a chance of getting through to ironwood.
(sidebar i think watts was being overly pessimistic there, about the possibility of ozpin foiling them by talking sense into ironwood. even before ozpin died and ironwood entered his fascism death spiral, ironwood marched into an allied kingdom with his armada in tow without so much as a courtesy warning, chafed openly when ozpin declined to blindly deploy that armada on the basis of hearsay from a fifteen year old kid, politically stabbed ozpin in the back by freezing him out of his own council, and throughout it all moped about ozpin not trusting him enough. like,, lmao)
and then of course there’s the fact that atlas was specifically a project that ironwood and ozpin shared—and atlas itself is and has always been used narratively as a symbol for the hollow promises, failures, and illusory progress of the post-war society ozma designed—and the entire story up to this point was a slow inexorable build towards the fall of atlas.
it just seems like a microcosm of what’s going on with ozma and the god of light and the divine mandate? in that ozma’s loyalty to the gods (or at minimum, the inertia of his original loyalty to them) feels reflected in his choice of ironwood to guard the relic of creation and shepherd the floating city meant to represent the ideals ozma thinks humanity needs to achieve to earn salvation—he picks a champion who resembles the god of light himself!—and then, when the budding tyrant he trusted spins around to shoot him he’s not even present to—like his self-imposed isolation inside oscar’s head renders him powerless to even try to change this situation for the better! ozpin later claims that he was secretly there all along, but the only times he resurfaces are when oscar is in immediate mortal peril so i’m not sure that i buy that, at least not in the sense of ozpin having full conscious awareness of what was happening around oscar throughout v7; but either way, his miserable isolation blinded him to the developing crisis—either literally or willfully—and he roused himself just a little too late to prevent catastrophe. again.
(gestures vaguely at lost fable, at ozma trying so hard to have it both ways with salem, to be with the apostate and manipulate her into serving the gods so he wouldn’t have to choose, for years and years and years until his lies and passivity metastasized and they destroyed each other, gestures vaguely at the v5-6 promising not to lie in one breath and immediately lying again in the next, until his secrets got squeezed out of him by the avatar of knowledge who palpably holds him in disdain and his house of cards imploded in his face; also gestures vaguely at ozma the heroic knight errant who faced down an army alone to save one person, and how thousands of years have whittled him down to a morally bankrupt shell of what he was and how that slow putrefaction of his character has been driven every step of the way by refusal to act in some form or another. waves hands it’s about the paralysis of being caught between his conscience and his god-given task)
anyway
i think a normal amt about the blinding of rapunzel’s prince and the exile in the desert and the restoration of his sight when she finds him there
ANYWAY, with the way things are resolved re: ozpin’s return in v8 and the fall of atlas having set the stage, narratively, for a massive paradigm shift in the immediate future and the kids who didn’t fall being in vacuo now—kingdom of destruction, presumable home of the maiden whose fairytale theme is “dont view the world at a distance, take an active part in it,” and the place where eighty years ago ozma won a war with a magical sword nuke and sculpted the world into what it is now, stagnant rotting husk of his ideals that it is—on top of the structural change in salem’s role in v7-8… i just. i just,,
hhhhhh
#NOT TO MENTION#salem has creation + knowledge in her hands now#the *storytelling* qualities#plus the likelihood that she ordered cinder not to go to amity#BECAUSE she wanted it intact for some reason#e.g. intending to use it herself later#and the strong theme in her arc#of the power storytellers have to shape reality#(in a story SHE IS THE NARRATOR OF!!)#like . . .#if rwby is gonna put a spin on#rapunzel’s anguish healing her lover’s sight#after she finds him wandering lost in the desert#um. now is the time and the set up for it is RIGHT THERE#i feel deranged

ive seen people talk abt winter defecting to team salem yet i cant quite see that happening, perhaps im wrong. what're your thoughts? do you think she might?
Oh, I absolutely believe Winter is going to defect to Team Salem.
The thing is, Jacques was never going to be Weiss’ villain. For as much power as he has, he ultimately a) never posed a physical threat, which is kinda anathema to an action-oriented show like RWBY, and b) the power he held over Weiss was pretty damn easily broken. He did it himself in Volume 4. Once Weiss was disinherited, there was nothing holding her back from just leaving.
So the question presented ended up being “Who is going to be Weiss’ villain?”
Weiss’ struggle has always been about her family. Her initial goal was to redeem her family’s name, and honestly I do still believe that’s something she wants to do. But just like she’s more than just a name, the name is more than just her, and bringing her family name back into the light involves bringing her family back into the light.
So her struggle has effectively always been about bringing her family back together. So the villain in her story has to be someone standing in the way of that.
Whitley is a kid with no combat training. Willow was basically an unknown until her first appearance.
So, that leaves Winter.
While everyone else in Weiss’ family has been distanced from her by Jacques’ abuse, Weiss and Winter have always been displayed as tight-knit. She’s Weiss’ mentor, the person who taught her to be a Huntress, the person who helped her escape.
But Winter also works for the Atlesian Military, who have screamed “Eventual Bad Guys” since their introduction. She was strict, she was quick to anger, and she was loyal to General Ironwood.
She was also a mentor figure in a show all about a new generation coming in and saving the world from the mistakes of the past.
And to top it all, it would absolutely hurt Weiss more if Winter was her villain than anyone else.
So the idea that Winter would be Weiss’ villain has been there for quite a while. The question then has been how she would go from beloved mentor to opposing force. A lot of ideas have been thrown against the wall in the intervening years, but now we’ve reached the point where the path forward looks obvious:
Winter is currently compromised to hell and back. Both physically and emotionally. She is absolutely conflicted about what she’s doing: she can see Ironwood is going off the deep end, but she still trusts him, still loves him as her surrogate father; her destiny has been pulled out from under her; the Kingdom she is sworn to protect is under attack; she has been asked to kill a friend, arrest her sister, be party to the violation of her best friend’s bodily autonomy, and go on a suicide mission all on the same day; and now she’s effectively let enemies of the state escape her custody twice.
But she has been taught to suppress her emotions, to suppress her doubts, to never question authority. To follow orders.
Everyone is reading the foreshadowing right: she is absolutely uncomfortable with what Ironwood is asking her to do. She is absolutely at her breaking point.
But she’s not heading towards Weiss.
Weiss is always going to be the person that gets Winter to defect. To leave Atlas behind and come be a family. Because Winter’s joining the heroes is as much a part of Weiss’ arc as it is Winter’s.
But she’s not heading towards Weiss.
When Ren looks at them with his empath-vision, Ren sees that both Marrow and Winter are uncomfortable with their situation, that they don’t want to be there anymore. But while Marrow’s emotions are certain, one colour, moving in one direction; Winter’s are all over the place, multiple colours, moving in every direction. Marrow is sure of what he wants, but Winter isn’t.
But she’s not heading towards Weiss.
Winter, right now, is at her most malleable. Her most susceptible. Her most vulnerable. She is at a tipping point, and a push could send her in any direction right now. If Ironwood knew what he was doing, he could do something that would secure her loyalty, just like Salem did to Cinder. Similarly, if Weiss were here, this would be the easiest time to convince her to come home, to be a family again.
But she’s not heading towards Weiss.
She’s heading towards Salem. The master manipulator. Who knows exactly how to break a person and get them on-side. Who has lived through very similar circumstances to Winter: an abusive father, a heroic rescuer, their paths diverging, and losing faith in that rescuer.
Anyone in Winter’s situation would be ripe for manipulation by Salem. The way to not be manipulated is to be surrounded by people who love and care for you, who are willing and able to talk you down from the ideas Salem would put in your head. But Winter is isolated, surrounded by people she doesn’t fully trust, with the two people she loves the most, who’d have the best chance of stopping any manipulation, currently stuck in Schnee Manor.
So I fully expect Salem to turn her. I fully expect Winter Schnee to be an antagonist going forward, and for this to utterly break Weiss’ heart. And I fully expect Weiss to never give up on her sister, and eventually convince her to step back into the light.

Ever since I heard abt French Vanilla being a fun dynamic, I would be so down to see how Neo would react to Weiss and Jaune both being able to have her open up ad be more trusting to them given she probably grew up on the streets having to survive by any means necessary.
Even Weiss managed to open up to those around her that care given she came from a Legacy Family wracked with more family drama than a season pitch of Keeping Up With The Schnees (pretty sure that was pitched by some Atlesian Big Wig Media Tycoon, but the rights weren't handed over that easily).
But the biggest thing here about this Throuple? They all thought of themselves as being useless in some way or another and the entire series proved that was a freaking lie. Jaune thought he wasn't huntsman material, Weiss was thought of by Jacques as a disgrace to the Schnee Family, and Neo possibly thought Cinder would dispose of her after they both tried to kill Ruby for revenge against Roman's demise.
There's something about these three (half of the characters on the island, I sure hope they get to have a few conversations. If anyone has the education to know a form of sign language, it's kinda Weiss tbh. But Jaune would be willing and happy to learn)
They're my favorite characters in the show. Really they are. And I want them to be the ones to finally defeat Cinder together in the end (Ruby has better things to do, and Cinder doesn't deserve to fight another Maiden in the end)
They have been through so much since Beacon
And if Neo does tentatively ally with the group, I can see her being just like Vol.1 Weiss (The one Jaune had a crush on...) She'll be rude, closed off, and a bit self centered. She thinks these people are a means to an end but realizes friendship is a whole lot better
If anyone can crack through those barriers, is Weiss and/or Jaune
And since Vol.2 after Jaune's talk with Neptune at the dance, and Weiss never thanking Jaune for saving her life at Haven? There's a lot of potential there for a private conversation. (Though now that Jaune is drinking his respect women juice regularly and listened to Weiss asking for space / that she isn't interested in him, she kinda has to make the first move there if White Knight happens)
I never really thought of them as a poly ship before a few weeks ago. I liked each pairing separately. But there really is something there with all three, huh?
I know how much CRWBY love their team names even while separated. Looking at you RNJR. So the possibility of teams RBY and JWN, as Ruby and Jaune, splitting up to accomplish some tasks on the island makes me really happy. Maybe JWN have a sword to claim or a monster to slay? (Vorpal swords/Excalibur and a Jabberwocky/Dragon seem to be favorite guesses)

(some) amis as 1830s intelligentsia
i know comparing fictional characters w real human beans isn’t a good look. but indulge me
fantine: maria ogareva! she’s so painfully witty and intelligent, so sharp and outspoken that her husband’s friends (herzen) thought it wasn’t becoming of a woman and ostracized her for it, and, although she tried very hard to appeal to them at first she eventually just. realized some things just can’t possibly be salvaged. she fashioned her marriage after george sand’s novels (jacques in particular i think!) and was horribly let down when it all failed miserably. but it’s the way she believed so desperately in love and fought for it and how unbearably strong she was
bahorel: bakunin. punchy radical man. likes secret societies. has a loving relationship with his family. has experience with barricades. kind of up his own ass.
feuilly: belinsky. hear me out. feuilly as a literary critic? feuilly as a journalist? the “in more civilized countries they have guillotines for people like you” or so i paraphrase. it’s the wittiness, it’s the passion, it’s the romanticism, and maybe i just want feuilly to insult people more. also i just. have a headcanon that feuilly and bahorel can’t stand each other. just! think of it. imagine feuilly taking everyone down a peg. imagine feuilly absolutely hating prose. imagine feuilly writing impassioned letters to hugo calling him a sellout. i’m so in love with belinsky. moving on
combeferre: pls forgive me. dostoevsky. it’s the contradictions, the tortured vacillation between passionate convictions. if combeferre survived the barricades? jasdfdsajl do you dare argue, w any certainty, that he wouldn’t’ve become a royalist?
courfeyrac: turgenev! it’s the way he can’t stay upset with anyone, the way he needs everyone to adore him. but if you insult his loved ones he will challenge you to a duel. and then he’ll write you a pained but sincere letter of apology that’ll get lost in the mail. it’s the way he can’t bring himself to say a cruel word of anyone, the way he’s so sweet and witty, the way he falls in love passionately and would not at all mind being the lover and “family friend” of a married opera singer. it isn’t just because combeferre is dostoevksy and i want the friends to enemies (to friends again. please. i can dream) slow burn. shhh. it’s also the way dostoevsky would look at him and be like ‘and you believe in freeing the serfs? with your estate?’ also just. imagine if courfeyrac and bahorel were roommates. the chaos.
(also if marius were rudin and rudin were bakunin like turgenev said then. then marius and courfeyrac would be roommates again. but i don’t? trust turgenev’s judgement?)
jehan: i’m apologizing a lot today, and i will again, but. stankevich. i’m so sorry. he loves poetry but can’t write any himself, not for the life of him. jehan would love feuerbach. he would love purifying fire of love. he despises prose and folktales and that is so valid of him. imagine jehan, young hegelian, absolutely obsessed with enjolras, the actual hero of his time, doomed to greatness. i just. i need more jehan and feuilly, best of bros, huddled around candles, talking abt love. please.
marius: aksakov! silly ridiculous aksakov. stopping random ppl on the street to be like “hello have you considered wearing traditional clothing? you would be much prettier in traditional clothing.” it’s the way he’s absorbed his father’s conservative views and flaunts it constantly around his more progressive friends, and is very shocked and affronted when he’s confronted with the fact that they don’t take him esp seriously.
#fdalfjladsfj#sorry the only reason i'm comparing them is#1. they're from the same era#2. they're friend groups i've imprinted on#and also marius is aksakov

I didn't know you've seen rwby! your opinions are very interesting (in a good way!) and if you felt comfortable doing this, I would love to hear you talk more in depth about them. I would love to hear you elaborate on some of your more "controversial" opinions
i don't mind at all! i rly would like to talk abt rwby with people more, but i don't want to put myself out there in the fandom because that's a nightmare warzone AHDHDHD
so, i think jaune's highish place on the list would be controversial, and i think an important thing to note with him is that it's based on his Current standing in the series. it's very important to make it clear that i fucking hated jaune for the majority of the series, he was annoying and whiney and full of manpain and took away screentime from the actual main characters. i didn't like him from vols 1-6 lmao. but since the atlas arc started i do like him now. his arc is over and he's actually likable which is something i didn't think they would be able to do.
yang and blake's places on the list would get me death threats had i tagged that list, i'm sure lmao. i just cannot stand yang. everything that made her fun and likable in the first three volumes was taken away, and i understand she went through a traumatic event but she didn't come out of her arc of healing or whatever for the better. vol5 to present yang is insufferable to me. she's mean, judgemental, and a giant hypocrite. (yelling at ozpin for hiding the truth while actively hiding the fact that her mom is the spring maiden anyone???) she's just a ball of negativity now, she does not have a single likable quality to me.
blake got a similar treatment, vol4 and beyond blake became really unlikable as well. the entire menajerie arc was just awful and hard to sit through. it's part of the reason i hated volume 4 so much (and vol5 but that's not an unpopular opinion) she came off as whiney to me in vol4 rather than an eager activist like she was in the previous volumes, the show has never been good at actually putting faunus discrimination Actuallt on display besides no faunus signs and hamfisted remarks from strangers (that they always have weiss respond to rather than blake???) so blake's anger with the whole situation almost doesn't feel justified. this is a problem of the writing of course but it does not do her character any favors. she's higher on the list than yang though because blake has gotten a lot better in the atlas arc, especially her conversation with nora and her recent conversation with ruby about how she's always looked up to her. she might get higher on the list as the atlas arc goes on, who knows. i'm definitely more open to liking her than yang: at this point i think there's no saving yang for me.
nora and ren have been dropping on the list for me ever since their relationship problems started this arc, although even before that they still weren't like top tier for me or anything. ren's angst just isn't hitting it right for me, although maybe i do regret not putting nora a tier higher, her plight about not knowing who she is without ren is very good, so yeah i might have some regrets about that.
this isn't as much as an unpopular opinion as the others, but i think cinder is such a bad villain. she's always been pretty one dimensional, Yes, even after we got her backstory, which by the way was trying Way too hard for me to be tragic, it was honestly kind of hard to take seriously because of how it lacked Any kind of subtlety, it really was trying so hard to make her sympathetic to the point that it was essentially trying to force those feelings into you. but anyway, vol3 cinder was the best cinder's ever been, she was actually intimidating, killed ozpin and pyrrha, and Succeeded At Her Task. she has been nothing but a series of failures since then and her power has been scaled back to significantly, they've made her pathetic now. she Might be looking towards a brighter future soonish though, i hope her character is going towards something more interesting now instead of failing again lol.
while i don't like ironwood as a person, i do Love how he was written. i think he's a very well written antagonist, i don't frequent the tags very much so idk if that's a popular opinion or not. jacques does his job as an antag, i don't think he's as well written as ironwood but he does his job. hazel and adam however are both bad as people And horribly written villains imo. i could never put myself in blake and yang's shoes of how traumatized and scared they were of adam because he was never once truly intimidating to me. he was just a loser. and while yes, abusers are pathetic and he was eventually outed as pathetic and that's the point, they were still so scared of him even after he ran away like a coward and i just could not relate because he just wasn't a scary villain, he was a boring loser who never actually lived up to the fear the other characters had of him.
and hazel is just such a baffling character. his whole motivation is that he hates seeing children being trained to be sent off to war, especially a war that is impossible to win, but then he relentlessly beats the shit out of a child with no regret. calling ozpin a coward because he's "letting the boy suffer" instead of taking over the body, even though he's the one beating a child in the first place, it's not ozpin's fault oscar is getting beaten buddy, it's your fists!! and it's not like even if ozpin Was in control of the body the whole time that oscar wouldn't be affected anyway, it's his body, he can still feel all the pain. what a fucking idiot.
ANYWAY UH this got really long sorry. those are some of my roobles opinions lol

while i’m on the subject, now this is not absolute or anything, but i think there’s chance that jacques was at village of fowl devotees because of olivia.
jacques in tbb (or sometime just before that) was investigating abt the arson case lemony was framed of and he could still very possibly be investigating lemony related issues around the time of taa/tee. when olivia mentioned jacques came to ask her if his brother’s still alive, it might’ve been as recent as taa/tmm, which matches up to just about the time of jacques’ letter to jerome mentioning the death at lumber mill that already happened (presumably referring to georgina), and him being “at a village” and finding a couplet.
if this is indeed the village of fowl devotees (i wouldn’t say this is completely certain, but let’s assume it is that village for this hypothesis) then the baudelaires were definitely not here yet (because esme and jerome were not married yet) (we’re ignoring the contradictory clues surrounding JE marriage timeline for now but that doesn’t actually change things here), which means jacques was not there for the baudelaires but for his own business. and one thing he’s been up to seems to be investigating lemony related things, including clearing L’s name and trying to find if he’s still alive.
and while jacques’ own investigations could have led him to that village, he could also have gone there after talking to olivia. she could’ve given him some hints or clues or rumors she heard about lemony, hence why jacques went there.
whether or not jacques went there because olivia’s information, we do know that olaf did, or at least he said so himself. that means if jacques also went there because of olivia’s information, presumably something to do with lemony, then olivia must knew jacques was possibly still there when she sent olaf there. of course, maybe she’d thought he’d already left. or maybe she thought jacques being there means sending olaf into a trap because a volunteer would be there to catch him (if so, how wrong she was). maybe ultimately she just considered it her duty to give out information, so these thoughts did not occur to her, or did but she decided that changed nothing.
maybe jacques went there because of olivia’s information on lemony, or maybe he did it because he found something in his research while trying to clear lemony’s name or trying to find out if lemony’s alive. but that led to the question - why would lemony related clues lead to a village in the middle of nowhere. aside from strict rules and crows, is there anything or anyone there in the village of fowl devotees?
well, there’s hector. friend of the snickets (jacques praised his hot air mobile home as wondrous, he visited lemony in sbts and told him kit “is not just your associate, snicket. she’s your sister.”) could hector possibly hold any information about lemony?
then again, olivia’s information wasn’t always correct. sometimes she just said what people wanted to hear. if jacques went there because olivia’s information, there’s nothing guaranteeing the information was actually accurate.
(btw if you suscribe to the hector anwhistle theory and if you believe the most popular interpretation of the family tree, then they’re also all cousins. which is not that relevant to this but it really makes me feel like, everything is so interconnected, kind of way.)

So about Whitley
yknow how most kids of rich assholes in media (heck even irl) have a negative relationship with their parents? well, whitleys a different case since he's shown to be sad abt his dad being arrested. which makes me wonder if jacques actually has that little teensy part inside him that cares abt whitley not as an heir or as someone representing the Schnee name but as a son. Im genuinely curious and want to know what bonding the two have done that made whitley actually love his dad (of it isnt the Stockholm Syndrome talking). But i also wanna say that he doesnt 100% feel that way towards his dad. I wanma say he feels somewhat indifferent as well since accdg to Willow, he only started acting his bratty self cus Weiss left him with her and Jacques. Now this would be a different story if she said this excluding Jacques since that would mean that he only resents Willow but as she said, Jacques also has a part in making Whitley the broken kid he is today. Idk this is just smthng i picked up on maybe im overthinking things but i hope theyll focus more on whitleys character in v8 or 9.

I haven’t talked abt Whitley is a while so-
Random Schnee Boi Headcanons:
He plays piano but he really wanted to play the trombone... Jacques didn’t let him
He’s good at sewing, it was something he learned from Klein.
He’s the best, academically, in his family. Math comes naturally to him so before he got the heir position he was going to be put in the SDC financial division
He doesn’t really remember his mother before the birthday incident, so he has complicated feelings towards her. It ranges from longing for a maternal figure he never had, to anger for her perceived abandonment of him. But it’s mostly hollow bitterness.
He meant what he said about armies being more useful than huntsmen. It’s just logic for him. Armies can protect more, huntsmen are more precision based, and they go outside the kingdoms. In his eyes, the only thing special about huntsmen is favoritism no he’s not projecting or anything why would you say that
He’s actually very emotional he just over compartmentalizations and tries to stick to firm logic to cope with his situation
He hates bananas.
He only trusts Klein to make his crepes. The other chefs don’t do it right.
He has a stuffed rabbit that’s been meticulously taken care of by himself... and Klein. It was from Weiss when they were younger. When she left for Beacon he threw it out the window in a fit. (Klein found him searching frantically in the bushes ten minutes later)
He used to doodle in his school notebooks but his father told him to focus on “more substantial” practices. Klein bought him a sketchbook, but he hasn’t used it... it’s hidden under his mattress.
Sometimes at night he’ll leave his room and walk the halls. He doesn’t do anything besides look out the windows at the garden, but it’s a small act that breaks his fathers curfew rule and he revels in it.
He watched the Vytal Tournament. Well, he watched Team RWBY’s matches, keeping his attention firmly focused on his sister. He never mentioned it to anyone though.
He’s really into horoscopes. It’s kind of stupid but he thinks they’re fun.
He always likes to stop and look at those cases with the glass figurines when he goes to the mall. The colors almost remind him of dust... without the danger.
He doesn’t like heights. The only thing he fears more than heights are people who don’t fears heights.
He can play the Confident Heir role but has social anxiety. One time he casually agreed to attend a study group for school then panicked about it for an hour on the roof. It turned out fine.
He really likes pet fish. The dentist office he goes to has one of the wall fish tanks and he spends the entire wait staring at the fishies.
He can’t go to sleep without cuddling a stuffed animal or pillow.
He admires Winter, but has always felt very disconnected from her. Given their family environment, his feelings turned bitter.

just in general. like whatever's on ur mind abt Them
Hmm...
Well I might as well talk about Jacques. He’s the main character in my story Beyond South Pole.
When I visualize him I mostly see Miguel from The Road to El Dorado, and I kind of based his looks on that. But most important thing about him is that when I write his dialogue, I clearly hear his voice. I hear a Finnish voice actor Antti Pääkkönen, which has helped me characterize him a lot. (Pääkkönen was also the voice of Miguel in the Finnish dub, so...)
I am kind of unsure how to talk about his role. Like sure, he is the main character, but... What kind? In the very first chapter it’s said that he’s a fraud, a liar, a thief. But he’s still the hero of the story. Is he an anti-hero then? I don’t think so, because I think he is really a good guy in the end. But he’s still a thief. I don’t know. Everyone else has very specific roles, and he’s just... a lot of things.
He’s originally from Paris but I decided not to write the dialogue so that it shows he’s not a native English speaker. I think we can all agree that when you write accents it’s just... unpleasant.
Jacques left Paris because of his thievery. Someone was looking for him and he just left Paris. His mother hoped he would get a real job in London, but... he didn’t. And his whole plan is to get enough money to be able to move back to Paris. Well, he mostly wants to help his mother. He doesn’t know if he would just stay put in Paris. He enjoys having a colourful life. But would he stay a thief once his mother is taken care of? ... Maybe.

🎧 //For Roddi of course, but also Luci if you feel like it? //
outing my music tastes
For Roderich: The Mariner's Revenge Song · The Decemberists okay hear me out. It’s got:
the existential terror that is the ocean,
some p solid revenge
bitterness
imagine that he’s singing this song abt getting revenge on Jacques/Napoleon for all the invading.
But bc that one’s a little weird, I’m gonna throw in Hozier’s Dinner & Diatribes in too, for the mess kink, hatred of small talk, and the fireplay in the music vid
Luci’s more difficult, just because of the kind of music I listen to, but I could see Mr. Brightside being written about him, or Hugh Laurie’s Kiss of Fire with the right lover.
