Toronto, Canada | February 2024
For a post-Valentine's Day celebration, Ben and I spent a weekend in downtown Toronto. When we met in Union Station, he gave me three roses with white specks on them. He said he got it because he thought I would like it and I did. They look cool and pretty.
Here are the places that we visited:
The Paper Place (887 Queen St W)
Vịt Béo (858 Bloor St W)
Rooms 135 (135 Ossington Ave)
VdeV Maison (797 Dundas St W)
Ohiru Cafe (370 College St)
Euclid Farms (913 Queen St W)
Issues Magazine Shop (1489 Dundas St W)
La Cubana (92 Ossington Ave)
This is the third time that Ben and I have spent Valentine's Day together since we became a couple three years ago. It's one of the days when we would get to celebrate. We don't often do it. Even on our month anniversaries (which we both find weird that people make a huge deal out of it but hey! you do you), we usually just get coffee or a bottle of wine. But Valentine's Day and our anniversary is a different thing.
We're so glad that we get to celebrate it together and in person now. The long distance that we used to deal with before was a huge challenge. We're glad that we're at least in the same country again.
One day, we won't have any distance at all.

“ADVISES GUILTY PLEA IN HOPE OF LENIENCY,” Toronto Star. March 16, 1933. Page 2. ---- Cadi Imposes $25 Fine After Hearing Civil Penalties in Trade Mark Case ---- "Just say your man is guilty and plead that you hope I'll go slow," was the candid advice of Magistrate Jones to defence counsel appearing for Lacova Bercovitz, charged in city police court to-day with "breach of the Canada Trade Mark Act."
The advice came at the conclusion of a more than usually lengthy argument in which defence contended accused had been sued in another court and lost, that costs amounting to $230 had been attached to the judgment, and that defendant had suffered other financial loss over the discovery of bottles bearing the registered trade mark of well- known ginger ale product.
"But you don't have to accept my advice. if you don't want to," added his worship.
"Of course I'll accept such well-meant counsel." agreed defence counsel. "My client is guilty and I hope you will see fit to go slow, your worship."
"Twenty-five dollars and costs or 30 days." replied Magistrate Jones. "Now I'm sure you'll agree that in the circumstances I've gone very slow."
“Yes sir, you have - and I thank you," returned counsel, leaving the court-room in happy mien with accused.
Stole Drawing Instruments Joseph Hastings and James Smith pleaded guilty to the theft of a set of drawing instruments from Toronto school.
James Hill, janitor at the school, testified that he had been punched in the stomach by Hastings when the two accused were first discovered in the premises but that Smith had ran away and was captured by police later. Hastings was stated to have a juvenile record.
The mother of Hastings and the father of Smith each spoke in behalf of their sons. Both were placed on remand for sentence and probation for one year and warned not to get into trouble again.
Sixty days in jail was ordered by Magistrate Jones in the case of Ralph Whitefield, convicted of fraud in connection with a cheque for $30 alleged to have been used to obtain goods from a downtown department store.
Too Regular, Says Cadi Magistrate Tinker in early court to- day described Joseph Devine, up for a second time on a drunkenness charge, as being too regular an offender. Accused was fined $50 and costs or one month in jail.
Bert Proctor and Joseph Thompson were similarly charged and upon each admitting a previous conviction were ordered to pay $50 fine or go to jail for 30 days. No excuses were forthcoming from either.
As a first offender Jack Wilson was given $10 or 10 days. Ten dollars or 30 days was the penalty imposed upon John Katerssela for begging food from private houses within the city. Accused attempted to explain he had tried to buy food. having 30 cents in his pockets at the time. "That's a pretty thin story," cut in the bench. "It's not reasonable for a man to pass by numerous restaurants and then ask this court to believe you wished to buy food from a private house."
The same penalty - $10 or 30 days - was also passed upon Antte Karoness, arrested in company with Katerssela. Police saw both visit several houses.
Having Little Party P.C. Oswell (626) went to a house on Bloor St. W. There, he said in liquor and traffic court to-day, he found Herbert Freeland and another man having a little party, early this morning.
"This is the kind of thing they were drinking," said the officer, holding up a bottle of cloudy stuff. "It looks like rubbing alcohol."
"I lose heart a bit at times," said Freeland, saying he had been in "drunk court" before. He was a war veteran, he explained, and asked for leniency.
Freeland was fined $10 or 30 days for permitting drunkenness.
Charged with having alcohol illegally. Benjamin Shulman was remanded till March 23. Bail was set at $1,000.
Thos. Eldridge and Harry Partridge, up on remand on charges of theft of an auto and driving recklessly, were placed upon remand for sentence.
Counsel for defence explained that the two men had met some friends in a brick yard who had a gallon of wine, of which all had freely partaken. Neither had the least remembrance concerning any auto.
"And in all probability I wouldn't either," cut in Magistrate Jones, in conclusion.
Chinese Charged Lee Wah and Wong Soon run a restaurant on Elizabeth St. P.C. Shaughessy and P.C. McKetrick dropped around. Five Chinese, said P.C. Shaughnessy, were sitting at a table with liquor poured out in little cups by a waitress.
"I don't know anything about it," stated Lee Wah. "I was in bed." He said that it is a common practice for Chinese customers to bring liquor into restaurants. He always told them not to.
Wong Soon stated he had a sign "Liquor Not Permitted in this Restaurant." The case was adjourned till March 23, so defence could bring the Chinese waitress to testify.
In answer to a telephone call, P.C. McKay (718) went to the home of George and Elizabeth Allen, Elm. St. A milkman had called and there had been a scrap, it was explained.
"We'd been drinking pretty heavily," said Allen. "I should say so," said Judge Coatsworth, scanning accused's liquor permit.
Allen was fined $20 and costs or 30 days for permitting drunkenness, and the judge cancelled his permit. The charge against the woman was dismissed.
The court fined Joseph Ravia $100 and costs or three months for having liquor illegally. Police said they found beer in his car on Dufferin St.
Alice Beggs and Florence Gasny will be back on March 23 to answer charges of "having."

What Is Intermittent Fasting? A Naturopathic Perspective
Everywhere you look, there are health and fitness “experts” telling you what to eat, how to eat, how much to eat, and when to eat.
Keto. Paleo. Vegan. Mediterranean. Raw food.
All of these diets have their pros and cons, and while some work great for one person, they might not be ideal for the next.
If you need assistance in sorting out all of these options, consider having a naturopathic consultation to discuss which diet or eating plan may be beneficial to you.
Today we are going to have a closer look at intermittent fasting - not another diet, per se, but a pattern which tells you when to eat and when to abstain from eating.
Keep reading to learn more about this way of eating, and the benefits it may offer.
What Is Intermittent Fasting?
Strictly speaking, intermittent fasting is an eating plan where you cycle between periods of eating and periods of fasting.
Common methods include:
16/8 in which only eat during an 8-hour period each day, and fast for the remaining 16 hours (for instance, one may eat between noon and 8 PM, and then fast between 8 PM and noon the next day)
5:2 (where on 5 days of the week you ear normally but restrict calories to 500-600 on two other days).
The 16/8 method is the most popular, as most people find it to be easier to stick to, and more sustainable in the long term.
What Happens When You Fast?
When you go for an extended period of time, there are a number of changes which occur in the body.
After approximately eight hours of fasting, the body has used its glucose stores and starts to burn fat instead.
Once the body runs out of fat as a source of energy, it will begin to breakdown muscle tissue, which, obviously, is something you want to avoid.
Health Benefits Of Intermittent Fasting
There are a number of benefits of fasting, which can include:
Insulin levels in the blood drop, which helps the body to burn fat
There are positive changes in genes which can impact longevity and protect against disease
Cellular repair processes are initiated
Levels of human growth hormone increase, leading to muscle gains and fat burning
Increased brain function
Keep reading for a more detailed look at some of these benefits.
1. May Help You Lose Weight
A huge reason people start following new diets or eating plans is the goal to lose a few pounds.
Whether it’s for health reasons, to look better in a bathing suit, or a little bit of both, wanting to lose a few pounds is very common.
A 2000 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found during an 84-hour starvation period, resting energy expenditure (also known as resting metabolic rate) increased significantly.
Furthermore, by the very nature of restricting the times during which you eat, generally, the total calorie intake is lowered, so long as you don’t go overboard and binge during the times which you’re eating.
This combination of increased metabolism and fewer calories consumed can be a powerful combination for weight loss.
2. May Lower Your Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes
Intermittent fasting has been shown to reduce insulin resistance, lower blood sugar levels, and offer protection against the development of type-2 diabetes.
Studies on humans have shown that during fasting insulin may be reduced anywhere from 20 to 31 percent.
Furthermore, the effect of fasting on blood sugar is a reduction of three to six percent.
Both of these factors may lower your risk of developing type-2 diabetes.
3. May Be Good For Your Brain
There have been a few studies which have shown a positive impact of intermittent fasting on the brain.
In 2018, a study in the journal Nature Reviews, Neuroscience showed how cycles of fasting, combined with periods of eating, can optimize brain function.
This study showed benefits such as promoting neuroplasticity and resistance to brain injury and disease.
Another study, in Experimental Biology and Medicine showed intermittent fasting may be effective in protecting against cognitive deterioration as one ages.
4. May Help Reduce Inflammation
In 2007, a study in the Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism studied healthy volunteers who were fasting for the religious holiday of Ramadan and looked at the effects of fasting on inflammation.
This study found in participants who were fasting, inflammation levels were decreased.
5. May Increase Your Lifespan
A study in the journal Gerontology found intermittent fasting to have an impressive impact on the lifespan of rats, where those who were fed a fasting diet – eating only every other day – lived 83% longer than rats not on a fasting diet.
This said it is important to note that this research is still in its early stages and more research needs to be done, however even at this early stage, there is promise.
Is Intermittent Fasting Safe?
Just like any diet or eating plan, intermittent fasting is not without its side effects.
The main one being hunger - however, generally, this is only temporary, as your body adjusts to a new eating schedule.
Additionally, there is some research to show that intermittent fasting may not have as many benefits for women as it does for men.
Studies in rats have shown it to cause female rats to miss menstrual cycles, and make them infertile.
Anecdotally, skipped periods have been reported by women attempting intermittent fasting, only to have them return when they resumed their normal eating patterns.
If you have any of the following conditions, you should discuss with your doctor before trying intermittent fasting, or any other eating plan:
Underweight
History of eating disorders
Diabetes
On medications
Medical issues regarding blood sugar regulation
Low blood pressure
Have a history of irregular periods
Are trying to become pregnant
Are currently pregnant, or breastfeeding
Overall, though, intermittent fasting is considered to be safe, if you’re otherwise in good health.

Canadian minimalism
I have one more note to share this week about Junction House and then I promise we’ll be back to regular scheduled programming. Below is a copy of the press release that went out yesterday afternoon. It includes a few more renderings for the project.
------------------------------------
Tumblr media
October 11, 2018 (TORONTO) – After unveiling plans for a Studio Gang-designed tower at Yonge and St. Clair earlier in the summer, Slate Asset Management enters the fall market with a new mid-rise condo offering in the Junction. Designed by acclaimed Canadian architects, superkül, and emerging local interior design firm, Dialogue 38, Junction House further solidifies Slate’s approach of leading with design and city building when it comes to residential development.
“We invest in designers because we believe in design innovation,” says Brandon Donnelly, VP of Development for Slate Asset Management. “For us, good design moves beyond aesthetics and actually solves problems and creates value for people. We want to empower each of our collaborators to come up with bold ideas, as well as think beyond our individual projects and consider the broader community."
Sited at 2720 Dundas St W, just as the road begins to bend, Junction House is conceived as a new gateway into one of Toronto’s most vibrant neighbourhoods. The ambitious design brief challenged superkül and Dialogue 38 to define a Canadian brand of minimalism that at the same time reflects the historic material palette and creative energy of the Junction community.
“One of our inspirations was picking up on Scandinavian and Japanese approaches to minimalism, but through the lens of the Junction. What would that look like? How could we make sure our homegrown brand of minimalism is seen as approachable and in keeping with the neighbourhood?” says Donnelly. “We also really wanted to look at multi-storey suites – which eventually became The House Collection -- and explore how we could replicate the single-family experience in a boutique mid-rise format,” he adds, citing the influx of families into the Junction and the need for new residential options in the city more broadly.
Tumblr media
“The building was designed from the inside out,” says Andre D’Elia, Principal at superkül. “We focused on the suites because, ultimately, that is where people are going to live and spend most of their time. We didn’t just design a nine-storey building, we designed 144 homes that occupy the same built form.”
When it came to the exterior cladding, D’Elia says the focus was on reflecting the immediate context, while elaborating on the details. “We immediately thought of red brick, which is prevalent in the neighbourhood, and ended up cladding the first five storeys of the building with it. In order to add a sense of movement we staggered and angled the brick columns to play with light and shadow. We’re also introducing some old-world brick-coursing to add visual interest and mirror the local context.”
Dialogue 38 was tapped for the interiors after Donnelly visited a café designed by the firm in the east end of downtown. “Their work is what motivated us to reach out, because it seemed to get the Canadian minimalist sensibility we were after,” explains Donnelly.
Bennett Lo, Founder of Dialogue 38, says his approach was to focus on delivering design that would last. “We’re all influenced by trends and lifestyle, but our designs need to stand up against time. How do you produce something that is going to have immediate appeal and provide its own kind of interest, without feeling dated in a few years? The idea was to strip the design back and focus on the essentials, while at the same time incorporating aspects of the area. The suites and common areas will have smooth concrete ceilings and warm touches of wood throughout -- and the lines are clean and open.”
Tumblr media
The nine-storey building will also feature an expansive lobby that doubles as a co-working space, as well as a gym that draws on the warm materials of the suites and common areas. Lo says the design of the amenity space is optimized to encourage active use. “We focused on the amenities that we know people use, and spent our energy crafting spaces that embody the spirit of the building. The benefit of a boutique mid-rise is the opportunity to extend your living space in to the amenity spaces, and provide moments of social engagement in the building."
“We’re a short walk to the UP Express station at Bloor, which can take you downtown in less than 10 minutes. That proximity gives us an opportunity to have a dialogue between the Junction and the rest of the city. The proposed sign marks the Junction’s location and lets you know where you’re going, but also, where you should be,” says Donnelly.
Junction House offers 1, 2, and 3-bedroom suites, as well as its signature House Collection, ranging from 500 sq. ft. to over 1,500 sq. ft. and starting from the $400s. To register visit: JunctionHouse.ca

30 Cool Things to do in Toronto, Canada
Tumblr media
Toronto won my heart by tornado. After spending a week road tripping around Ontario as well as immersing myself in nature and also peace, Toronto was just the appropriate combination of laid-back attitude as well as big city buzz for me. I discovered the city with lots of time at my hand and also gathered a checklist of 30 cool points to do in Toronto that will be available in useful, whether you are trying to find websites to see, activities to do, places to consume or where to remain. This Toronto city overview has it all!
For me the ideal way to check out a brand-new city is to obtain as near neighborhood life as feasible. So when I had the opportunity to travel to Ontario in fall 2016, I knew I really did not simply wish to invest the normal a couple of days in Toronto and also race from sight to sight ...
I wanted to experience what it seemed like to live in Toronto, locate my much-loved cafe to deal with my writing, find neighbourhood dining establishments and shops, stroll the marketplaces and also classic shops, and also simply generally find out what makes the city so fascinating. I wound up investing 10 days below and did every one of those things-- and also even more. Not every one of the things on this listing of things to do in Toronto are sights, some are straight-out random day-to-day points I did while I was making believe to be a regional-- however all are must do's on your schedule!
Sites & Attractions: Points to do in Toronto
1) Ride the elevator approximately the top of CN Tower
CN Tower is a shocking 553.3 metres high and also held the record for the highest free-standing building till 2007. It is the ninth-tallest tower on the planet as well as for CAD$ 38 you can get to the top of it!
The elevator takes you to 2 different sight decks 342 and 346 metres high. On the lower deck you can walk throughout a glass ceiling-- if you risk-- as well as accessibility an outdoor terrace. You can also book added access to the tower's SkyPod (at 447 metres) or an Edge Stroll on top of the major sheathing of the tower at 356 metres.
CN Tower, 301 Front Street West, internet site
Getting there: City line 1 to St Andrew Station, Tram to Union Station
2) Do a complimentary guided scenic tour at the Royal Ontario Gallery
I had actually not planned on going to the Royal Ontario Museum on the same day as the footwear museum, yet they are so close to one another, that it would have been a missed chance. The ROM provides a significant collection of art, world culture as well as natural history-- there is most definitely excessive to see it done in just one see.
After getting my ticket ($ 20) I did not also understand where to begin-- and that is when I discovered the gallery guide awaiting individuals to join her cost-free assisted tour with one of the galleries in the gallery. I was all in. Doing a random assisted trip turned out a fantastic idea-- not just did I get an expert sight on a gallery I might have not otherwise visited; however it also took the choice where to begin with me. Excursions are provided everyday and many of them are free!
After the excursion, I went on to look into the existing temporary exhibit, which was dedicated to the glass musician Chihuly.
Royal Ontario Gallery, 100 Queen's Park, internet site
Arriving: City line 1 to Museum Station
3) Check Out the Bata Shoe Gallery
The Bata Shoe Gallery is an unique as well as unusual museum experience-- never ever had I assumed I would learn more about the evolution of footwear on a vacation to Canada! The museum has several collections checking out the historic advancement of footwear-- did you understand heels were originally just worn by men ?!-- in addition to standard footwear made use of by very first country people worldwide. I especially appreciated the temporary exhibition regarding standard colouring techniques!
Bata Footwear Museum,327 Bloor St W, website
Arriving: City line 1 or 2 to St George Station
4) Marvel at the design
I liked walking different areas of Toronto and also simply marvel at the design. The mix of industrial as well as property buildings was something I had actually never ever seen rather similar to this prior to. I would walk down a roadway of workplace towers made from glass and all of a sudden the following block would boast red-brick buildings loaded with shops, nail hair salons and also restaurants. I would certainly turn one edge and stand in the center of a long domestic road lined with two-story family houses with front porches and also small yards. It's difficult to pinpoint specifically which locations and also roadways where my favourite, so simply discover on your own!
5) Do a sunset cruise on the Tall Ship Kajama
When I checked out Toronto in September 2016, Toronto Island had been flooded and also my opportunities to see the famous horizon of the city from the water were close to absolutely no. Then I found out about the tall ship Kajama and also its sunset cruise ships.
The ship cruises the harbour of Toronto several times a day throughout the summer season (May to 1st October weekend). Cruises take 1.5 hours plus half an hour of boarding time and offer extraordinary views of the skyline, Toronto Island and also Toronto City Airport. I extremely recommend doing this cruise throughout sundown, as the sinking sun dips the city's metallic towers into pink and orange golden tones. it was breathtaking!
I even saw a little plane come down on the central landing strip of the City Airport terminal-- fairly a surreal experience! There is a totally accredited bar aboard the tall ship and food is acted as well, making this the best dinner task!
235 Queens Quay West, sunset cruise sails at 8 pm, site
Getting there: Tram to Queens Quay West at Harbourfront Centre
6) Join a free street art excursion down Graffiti Street
Road art in Toronto is an intriguing topic-- it's prohibited, as well as if your building obtains sprayed and also someone reports it, YOU have to spend for its removal. Therefore, there are a great deal of owners and companies that quit their walls to be splashed on for payments in addition to committed locations where graffitis are collected in one place.
Among those is Graffiti Street as well as I liked discovering it on a free led scenic tour! The trip lasts about 1.5 hrs and also consists of not just the street, but additionally great deals of other vibrant locations, art pieces as well as image options in the area around Queen Road West.
Scenic tour Guys FREE graffiti walking excursion, fulfill outside the Black Bull Tavern at 298 Queen St. W, daily at 3.30 pm (May-Sept) site
7) Look into the festival schedule at the Harbourfront Centre
Festivals are a fantastic means to submerse yourself in the neighborhood culture as well as at the Harbourfront Centre there is a different celebration going on nearly every weekend break during the summertime.
I was fortunate sufficient to encounter a vegan event arranged by the neighborhood Vegetarian Society. I reached taste vegan foods from all over the world, paid attention to inspiring talks about values as well as nutrition and also paid attention to tons of live songs while resting among residents in the grass.
Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay W, Celebration Schedule
Getting there: Tram to Queens Quay West at Harbourfront Centre
8) Catch a film at TIFF or at the TIFF Bell Lightbox cinema
The Toronto International Film Event is just one of the most significant target market events worldwide, indicating that unlike Cannes, the general public can participate in thousands of film screenings throughout the city throughout the festival.
I checked out the city in September, providing me the chance to see wonderful celebration movies as well as really feel the celebration buzz around me, however even if you go to outside the event duration, you can capture wonderful international arthouse films at the TIFF Bell Lightbox cinema in main Toronto!

There are several parks on the Bluffs, yet if you head to just one of them, let it be Bluffers Park. This park is the just one with access to the lake and also a beach and naturally beautiful sights of the cliffs and also the water beyond.
Bluffers Park, Scarborough, website,.
Getting there: Tram to Eglinton GO Terminal and after that buses 86 as well as 175.
10) Check Out Toronto Islands by kayak or bike.
As a result of floodings I did not really most likely to Toronto Islands myself, yet I hear it's an amazing location to invest a day out far from the hectic roads of the city. Take the ferry across and afterwards determine whether you wish to walk, bike or kayak around the islands-- I know what I would certainly do!
Kayaks and canoes can be rented at the Boat House, a 10-minute walk from the ferry dock on Centre Island. It's best ahead early to get first choice of readily available boats!
Toronto Islands, site.
Getting there: Tram to Queens Quay Ferryboat Docks Terminal, Ferryboat: Centre Island Ferryboat.

Toronto has several beaches, however one of the most effective ones is Woodbine Coastline. A long beachfront with fine sand, lots of trees using color in the stretch of turf right behind it, lots of cafes and also restaurants nearby to leave the groups.
I rented out a stand-up paddle board from WSUP Toronto as well as paddled out onto Lake Ontario to obtain views of the city sky line distant. If you've never ever attempted stand-up paddling before, you can additionally reserve lessons, or sign up with a SUP yoga exercise class!

Kensington Market, Augusta Ave & environments, site.
Arriving: Cable car stations around Spadina Ave, Dundas St W and also College St.
13) Trip a bicycle down Landsdowne Avenue.
I lived near Landsdowne Method in Toronto and liked absolutely nothing more than riding my bike down this street and exploring the neighbourhood. From Corso Italia to West Queen West, Landsdowne connects several of Toronto's coolest areas and also with every huge junction a brand-new experience starts! I found the roadway charming to cycle, due to the fact that website traffic was excusable, and there were lots of various other cyclists on the street.
My AirBnB featured a bike (more below), however there are lots of placs in Toronto wher you can hire bikes. There is likewise a local city bike scheme, called Bike Share Toronto.
14) Explore the Junction area.
The Joint is a neighbourhood in west Toronto near the crossway of Dundas St W as well as Dupont St. The major road of the neighbourhood is Dundas St W and there are several trendy cafe, restaurants as well as takeaways, indoor stores, artist & designer workshops, galleries as well as antique shops-- it's been called among Toronto's coolest areas!

However, I enjoyed to getting on an arbitrary bus or cable car and also riding it together with the citizens. I would certainly people watch inside the carriage and also outside on the streets, left in areas that looked intriguing and uncovered some genuine treasures along the way!
Making use of public transport in Toronto is simple. I Offer Coffee is an unusual little coffee residence with mismatched furnishings in and out. I satisfied an idolizer of mine right here for an interview (not worried in any way) as well as thought it supplied just the ideal type of loosened up, yet productive atmosphere for our conversation.
The cafe sits at the edge of Kensington Market as well as it's a pleasure seeing people stopped by on their method to work or seeking a fast caffeine repair. They roast their own beans, so the coffee right here is very special!
I Bargain Coffee, 84 Nassau Road, Mon-Sat 8 am-- 7 pm, Opens 9 get on Sundays, internet site.
Arriving: Trams 310 or 510 to Spadina Ave at Nassau St South Side.
19) Invest a morning at Dark Horse Coffee Bar.
I invested almost 10 days in Toronto, which indicated I had time to create a little routine for myself as a freelance author as well as tourist. I enjoy mosting likely to coffeehouse in the morning to get some job done and after that discover repairs of the city in the afternoon.
Dark Horse Espresso Bar was a wonderful area to operate in-- and I was absolutely not the only one. There are a couple of little tables and also bar locations by the home windows, but I favored sitting at the large communal table between, surrounded by other freelancers functioning away on their laptop computers.
Top pointer: Make sure your laptop computer is totally billed as there are no sockets on/near the huge table.
Dark Horse Coffee Bar, 215 Spadina Ave, Mon-Fri 7 am to 7 pm, Opens 8 am Saturdays and also Sundays, site.
Getting there: Cable cars 310 or 510 to Spadina Ave at Sullivan St North Side.
20) Have brunch at Hello there Beloved.
Amongst the many restaurants and also coffee bar along Landsdowne Avenue, my 2 favourites were Starving Musician, which serve up cosy morning meal waffles as well as Hello there Beloved which is simply across the street. I had a fab salad bowl there and also appreciated being in the sun by the big home windows.
Hello Beloved, 827 Landsdowne Ave, Mon-Fri 9 am to 3 pm, Opens 10 am on Saturdays and also Sundays, Closed on Tuesdays site.
Starving Musician: the Landsdowne branch really shut, however there are 6 even more Starving Musician coffee shops around the city, web site.
Arriving: City line 2 to Landsdowne Station, Tram 47 to Lansdowne Ave at Wallace Ave.
21) Have lunch at The Excellent Neighour in the Junction.
The major reason that I ventured out into the Junction neighbourhood to begin with, was the reputation of the wonderful coffee bar and restaurants in this area. I was not disappointed and if I had to select my favorite, it would be The Great Neighbor Coffee Bar.
Found in a quiet property side road in the neighbourhood it appears like it's a local favourite amongst artists and families alike. I had a tasty sandwich for lunch as well as appreciated people seeing through the huge windows encountering towards the household streets. An unexpected treasure!
The Great Neighbor, 238 Annette St, Mon-Sun 7 am to 7 pm, internet site.
Arriving: City line 2 to High Park Station.
The Excellent Neighbour at The Joint in Toronto.
22) Preference the vegan pizza at Pizzaiola.
My journey to Toronto came equally as I got on the cusp of veganism-- I was incredibly interested as well as gotten every vegan meal I can get my hands on. My very first vegan pizza was a slice of Vittoria with the most effective tomato sauce ever, baked peppers, tomatoes and marinated zucchini. Pizzas can be bought by the slice as well as there are tons of weighty, vegan and also vegan alternatives offered. There are several Pizzaiola branches throughout Toronto, but I attempted the one in West Queen West.
Pizzaiola, 1172 Queen St W, Opens 11 am to 11 pm, open late Thursdays to Saturdays, website.
Arriving: Trams 301 or 501 to Queen St West at Abell St.
23) Supper at El Catrin.
The historical Distillery District has lots of good options for dinner as well as lunch, but I highly suggest booking a table at El Catrin. This Mexican-inspired dining establishment dishes up great cocktails and all your Mexican favourites-- tasty guacamole, tacos and burritos rupturing with flavour-- what more could you request? There is a warmed patio with lots of outside seats, so you can enjoy your meal as well as the horizon of the Distillery District at the same time.
El Catrin,18 Storage Tank Residence Lane, Open on a daily basis from 11.30 am (11 get on Sundays), web site.
Arriving: Tram 504 to Distillery Loop.
24) Treat yourself to an established menu dinner at Ruby Watchco.
Ruby Watchco is a very unique dining establishment-- primarily due to the fact that you don't get a great deal of options! They serve a seasonal fixed-price set food selection motivated by Canadian food, just collaborating with the freshest active ingredients they can get their hands on.
Vegan choices are available, but you require to call ahead to ensure they have everything they need to whip up a gleaming menu for you!
Ruby Watchco,730 Queen St E, Closed Monday & Sunday site.
Arriving: Various cable cars to Queen St East at Broadview Ave.
25) Consume all the poutine.
You can not leave Toronto without at least trying the Canadian nationwide dish, poutine. Poutine is chips (fries) with sauce and also cheese curds, but vegan choices (with veggie sauce and also tofy curds) is often offered as well! There are tons of legendary areas to choose poutine, but if you just want a quick fix, head to one of the two Poutini's Home of Poutine stores! Vegan poutine readily available.
Poutini's Residence of Poutine, 1112 Queen Street West as well as 617 King Street West, Mon-Fri open from midday, King St W branch closed on Mondays, website.
Getting there: King ST W-- Trams 304 or 504 to King St West at Rose City St; Queen St W-- Trams 301 or 501 to Queen St West at Abell St.
Buying in Toronto.
26) Purchase Asian keepsakes in Chinatown.
Just around the bend of Kensington Market exists Toronto's Chinatown. In the shops lining Spadina Method, I located several of my dearest keepsakes-- wicker indoor pieces, teas and all type of various other bric-a-brac for my level.
Getting there: Various cable car lines to Spadina Ave at Queen St W.
27) Vintage stores in West Queen West.
It doesn't come as a shock that the trendy area of West Queen West has a few of the best vintage stores in Toronto. My favorite stores were in between Dufferin St as well as Sorauren Avenue:.
Public Butter Vintage, 1290 Queen St W, web site.
Residence of Vintage, 1239 Queen St W, site.
In Classic We Depend On, 1580 Queen St W, site.
The Salvation Army, 1447 Queen St W, site.
Getting there: Cable car 301 and also 504 quit along West Queen St W.
28) Window-shop at Hit Salvage.
As mentioned over, the Joint neighbourhood is a heaven for all points interior decoration and also vintages. Wreck Salvage combines the two and supplies a diverse mix of classic interior pieces, upcycled furniture as well as antique gems for your residence.
I restricted myself to window shopping, however also that felt a lot more like walking through a gallery than via a store!
Wreck Salvage, 2880 Dundas St W, website.
Getting there: Metro to Dundas West Station, bus 40 stops along Dundas St W,.
Where to Stay in Toronto.
29) Stick with residents with AirBnB.
I invested most of my time in Toronto sticking with citizens using AirBnB. I had reserved a personal area near Corso Italia as well as shared a home with a French-Canadian/ Brazilian pair and their German shepherd pet-- what a worldwide mix! I enjoyed remaining in your area to discover life in Toronto and read about my hosts' preferred treasures in the area.
My area came with the choice to use one of the bikes my hosts provided, which was very useful for exploring the nearby trendy neighbourhoods of West Queen West and The Joint! There was a bus station close by which took me to Landsdowne metro station within a few mins-- excellent to get to the city centre and back!
30) Spend a night at Thompson Toronto.
There are some wonderful resorts in midtown Toronto, and if you just have a few days to see the main sites and also get a feel for the city, a resort could be a far better alternative than an AirBnB.
I can only advise Thompson Toronto, a fashionable store resort near the Bathhurst St as well as King St W joint. I had a lovely space from where I could see the CN Tower via the trees as well as went for morning meal at the American-style restaurant within the hotel. The main reason that I assume you must treat on your own to at the very least one evening at Thompson Toronto though is its rooftop.
You could not get a much better view than viewing the sun rise over the city's horizon from the infinity swimming pool at the hotel's rooftop balcony!

Here’s to the History of Canadian Pride
Whenever Pride rolls around, I always see only acknowledgment of The Stonewall Riots, which is absolutely inspiring, and Martha P. Johnson was a BAMF. As a Canadian, though, I’d like to put out our own history, now the majority of this info comes from Queer Events so if you’d like to check out that link after this, there’s tons more info to find out.
May 1969 - Decriminalization of Homosexuality -  On May 14, 1969 Canada decriminalized homosexual acts between consenting adults with the passage of the Criminal Law Amendment Act first introduced in December 1968. It receives royal assent on June 27. One day before the Stonewall Riots took place in New York.
August 1971 - First Gay Rights Protest -  On August 28, 1971, roughly 100 people from Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and the surrounding areas gathered in the pouring rain at Parliament Hill for Canada’s First Gay Liberation Protest and March. They presented a petition to the government with a list of ten demands for equal rights and protections.
August 1973 -  Pride Week 1973 Emergence and shift to gay liberation - Pride Week 1973 was a national LGBT rights event held in August 1973 in several Canadian cities, including Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Saskatoon and Winnipeg. Programming included an art festival, a dance, picnic, a screening of a documentary and a rally for gay rights that occurred in all the participating cities.
This event represented the shift from the homophile movement into the gay liberation movement, showing the emergence of the concept of gay pride. This event is often considered the first pride parade in Vancouver.
December 1973 -  Homosexuality no longer considered a ‘disorder’ -  Homosexuality is removed as a "disorder' from the Diagnostics and Statistics Manual of Mental Disorders.
January 1974 - The Tipping Point : The Brunswick Four - In January, The Brunswick four are arrested at the Brunswick Tavern in Toronto. Some historians believe that the arrest and its consequences was a key incident ushering in a more militant gay and lesbian liberation movement in Canada, much as the Stonewall Inn Riots politicized gays and lesbians in the United States. This was also one of the first occasions that a gay or lesbian topic received extensive press coverage in Canada.
The women brought charges against the officers subsequently for verbal and physical police harassment, however the officers were acquitted due to their switching their hats and badge numbers making them unable to be accurately identified.
October 1977 - Montreal Bathhouse Raids - On the night of Oct. 22, 1977, Montreal police raided Truxx and Le Mystique, two gay bars on Stanley St. This raid was more of a military operation then a normal police intervention: 50 police officers, wearing bulletproof vests with guns (including machine guns) drawn, went in and arrested 146 patrons, all homosexual men, as part of what was at the time the biggest mass arrest since Trudeau had declared the “War Measures Act” during the October Crisis. The men who were arrested were crowded into holding cells for more than eight hours, and forced to take venereal disease tests. They were also forbidden from calling their lawyers.
The very next day, 2,000 people took to the streets, blocking the corners of Ste. Catherine St. W. and Stanley St. to protest what had happened on the previous night. Police and protesters naturally clashed.
In an effort to get the crowd to disperse, police rode their motorcycles into the crowd, clubbing protesters, who in turn threw beer bottles at the police.
This ended with Quebec adding Sexual Orientation to the Human Rights Code in December of 1977
May 1981 -  First Lesbian Pride March in Canada -  “Look over here, look over there, lesbians are everywhere!” was the chant of over 200 women who marched from Robson’s Square in Vancouver to the West End Community Centre in Canada’s first lesbian pride march which took place on the weekend of the fifth Binational Lesbian Conference.
February 1981 - Operation Soap - On Feb. 5, 1981 Toronto police stormed four gay bathhouses in the city as part of what they called "Operation Soap," and arrested just under 300 men. For the majority, charges were later dropped or dismissed..
Rallies were held in response to the injustice and to this day it is often referred to as Canada’s Stonewall.
To this day, "Operation Soap" is one of the largest mass arrests in Canada and it was 35 years later in 2016 that Toronto's police chief formally apologized for the raids.
July 1990 -  The Sex Garage Raids - On July 15, Police raid The Sex Garage's After Party. The violence ignited 36 hours of clashes between Montreal’s LGBT community and the police force, which was accused at the time of harbouring a culture of homophobia. The Sex Garage raid is now widely considered to be Montreal’s Stonewall, after the New York City riots in 1969 that marked a turning point for the LGBT rights movement worldwide.
Sex Garage politicized a generation of LGBT activists who would change the Quebec political landscape, uniting gays and lesbians, and francophones and anglophones, in a common front. These activists would establish the Divers/Cité Pride March and political-action groups like La Table de concertation des gaies et lesbiennes du grand Montréal to successfully fight for LGBT civil rights and improve gay life in Montreal.
January 1990 -  Two Spirit Term -  The term Two Spirit (niizh manidoowag) is coined at the third annual Native American/First Nations Gay and Lesbian Conference in Winnipeg. The term allows Indigenous LGBTQ+ folks to reject other English terms that impose the Western views of gender and sexuality on indigenous people.
June 1999 -  Blockorama: First black queer space at Toronto pride -  In 1999 Blockorama made its appearance as the very first black queer space in the Toronto pride festival. Today it is an all day dance party and stage during Pride to celebrate Black Queer and Trans history, creativity and activism.
November 2001 -  Community Rally Against Homophobia -  On Nov 18, over 3,000 people came together for a march and vigil protesting anti-gay violence held to commemorate the death of Vancouver resident Aaron Webster who was assaulted and killed in Stanley Park by four young offenders in one of Canada's most notorious anti-gay hate crimes. Webster’s death ignited a community that had enough after a series of hate motivated attacks against members of the queer community.
July 2005 -  Bill C-38: Civil Marriage Act - Bill C-38 bill became federal law which gave same-sex couples the legal right to marry. This made Canada the fourth country in the world to allow same-sex marriage. Official Legislative summary:'This enactment extends the legal capacity for marriage for civil purposes to same-sex couples in order to reflect values of tolerance, respect and equality, consistent with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It also makes consequential amendments to other Acts to ensure equal access for same-sex couples to the civil effects of marriage and divorce'.
June 2009 - Toronto’s First Trans March - The Trans March, originally started by Karah Mathiason began in response to Pride’s lack of organizing efforts for the Trans* Community. The march, which was not recognized by Pride Toronto as an officially programmed event, was a short route that from Church & Bloor Streets to Church & Wellesley Streets. When the march reached the Church and Wellsley Streets, they were met with large metal barricades lined up across the street. The marchers, disappointed and frustrated, pushed through the barricades, and finished the first ever Trans March inside the Village.
March 2013 -  Bill C-279: Trans Rights are Human Rights -  The House of Commons passes Bill C-279 in March, a private member's bill sponsored by Randall Garrison, which officially extends human rights protections to transgender and transsexual people in Canada.
Tumblr media
There are SO MANY MORE, I pretty much cherry picked the big events. I apologize for the long scroll, please check out the link for more dates of firsts, because it’s all worth reading. Happy Pride everyone! This pride flag design is made by @thejoanglebook

What about EATALY?
Yes, you can visit another country without getting a plane and spending hours in a flight. That’s the feeling that I had when I visited Eataly. This is a known brand worldwide and they have about 35 stores, included in Italy (No way?), USA and Brazil. It was created by Oscar Farinetti and start to operate in 2007 - The name means Eat Italian, what is a good idea to a big market that sells items from the Italian eat culture to dine in and take out, to prepare by yourself at home and feel like a Italian chef (mangiare!).
When I visited, I was planing to eat something different than pasta or simple pizza and I walked throughout the place, looking around: Everything there makes you hungry - Seriously. You can find there lots of products coming from Italy like, Italian tomatoes sauce, oil, vinegar, fresh made pasta (different types self produced in front of the guests), big legs of  prosciutto and big wheels of parmigiano reggiano cheese.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The design of the place make you walk through the every single aisle and see what they can surprise you, with food and good service you can enjoy your visit.
PLUS: They teach culinary lessons and you can try some classes, just check the schedule on the website - https://www.eataly.ca/
The Eataly that I visited was in Toronto: The new store, opened in November/19.
In front of the building you can see a huge name EATALY brightening and after a revolving door, looking up at the roof, you’ll see bronze pans and pots hanging there, as a decoration. Before go to the stairs, they show you two signs that say: “Discover Eataly upstairs” and “Italy is Eataly”. That’s a good invite hehe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I said, I was looking for something different - Not only different ingredients, but a different food, that I never tried - And I founded two things that I loved. First was the Roman-Style Pizza and second one, was the Cannoli. Sure, I already tried different types of cannoli, but this...this was perfect!
Roman-Style pizza is not a regular pizza, is more like a square, and they call it as a Focaccia. If you want to try everywhere you go, just order an Italian Focaccia - It’s the same.
I asked for two slices and they were big: One Tricolore (With Prosciutto, cherry tomatoes and Formaggio cheese) and one Cacio Pepe (With Formaggio and black pepper). The flavour that I could feel was individual: I felt the ham, tomato and cheese individually and at the same time, mixed. The flavor of the dough is unique, different from regular pizza because is thicker than others (not like Chicago style, I’ll explain that in other post).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After that, I went to the sweeties and I chose Cannoli (Leave the gun...) with sheep milk filler and traditional shell. Really, this turned into my favorite cannoli ever, because the taste is soft, you can feel the difference between a regular filling and sheep milk feeling, and this makes my experience better than I expected.
Tumblr media
Finishing my tour, I took some pictures of the restaurants and coffees shops that the public spend hours there and it was registered in my heart as a different experience, from a person that never been in Italy. Yet.
I hope you enjoy your visit there and reply with your review too.

Gucci and Farfetch Bring ‘Open House’ Project to Toronto with Just John and Maya Fuhr
Earlier this year, e-commerce giant Farfetch teamed up with Gucci to create a new content series called Open House. The idea? To take fans of the brand and site into the homes and neighbourhoods of members of its community.
In a release, the project is described as going “into the homes of [the Community] to explore how the city and culture around them influences their personal styles looking at each person’s fashion choices in the context of their home and city environments.” The hope is that “lovers of Gucci [will] discover new season pieces from the brand in an entirely new way.”
This month, the lens is focused on Toronto with rapper Just John and artist Maya Fuhr opening their homes for the project. We spoke with Just John about his life in Toronto, how it inspired his sound and his favourite hangouts are in the city.
Photograph courtesy of Farfetch
How does Toronto influence your life and style?
“I forged my sound through the vibrancy of Toronto’s DIY art scene. I sharpened my teeth performing at open mics and artist-run venues including a brick and mortar I ran for two years known as Blank Canvas Gallery that has now become our art organization. I would consider myself grounded in contemporary hip-hop but I have always had a punk energy in my performances, and that comes from the DIY lifestyle I was engulfed in here in Toronto. The mosh pits at shows and events, the expression, the connection with people, the relentless sharing, sleeping there after wild nights. The sharp cadences and flows comes from the 2am cyphers at Dundas, Queen or Bloor corners after a party. The stories and wanting to have a voice come from the marginalized communities far and wide and my lived experiences dealing with my own personal social injustices like police brutality and being pushed out of spaces. My voice, my truth and platform grew out of these spaces, I’m a product of my community.”

Where are your favourite hangouts in Toronto? The Studio, S/0 DOT at 669 Queen St. W My haven to create. The owner there, Dot, has forged such a vibrant space to work in and vibe.
Sideways Studio on Geary “I work closely with @Mr.Legendavey, one of the founders at Sideways Studios – they’re a music platform that showcases talented artists, plus their stage design is sick. So I hang around there a lot. I like being on Geary ’cause it’s a bit away but the strip’s known for dope warehouse parties and I feel it’s having a resurgence.”
The Libertine and Apt. 200 “If I’m not at an art installation, I’m probably at one of these clubs. I have a lot of colleagues who are active in these spots, the movers and shakers are always doing something here and it’s on the pulse. I have mad respect for Phil at Libertine and Zach at Saintwoods and what they do to contribute to the cultural landscape.”
Hear more from Just John here and see inside Maya’s home here.

Our endless and impossible journey toward home is in fact our home.
—David Foster Wallace
Hiking through the Andes in Peru with Apus Peru, 2013
A dream, however uncertain it may be, deserves to be fulfilled. And so we explore, observe and document, learn and interpret, invent. Travel is just one way we fulfill our dreams. Of course, it sparks more dreams too!
This is a maquette of a project we envision recreating life size: Nature Seeker by Brave New Wild.
We have not been travelling for the past two months. Not unless you include visits to Julie’s dad in Amherstburg, our son in Guelph or our friends near Collingwood.
Dad’s 79th birthday.
Detroit’s Easter Market.
Harriet’s ballet recital.
Shopping at Costco with Annie, Harriet, George.
Nobuyo.
Margot and Elia’s new backyard.
We are living (while trying to make it look as though we are not) in Toronto, in the apartment that we are trying to sell which we constantly stage for a stream of strangers who make appointments to look through our apartment while we aren’t here. When not vacating the apartment it is our workplace. We are spending time with friends and family.
Christian in our apartment (for sale) on Bloor St W in Toronto.
We’re dealing with a host of mechanical problems on the van and getting it ready for our next foray into the unknown.
Christian replacing fuel pump relay switch.
Christian’s birthday.
Add to that, a bunch of boring tasks like visits to the dentist and doctor and filing our taxes; not so boring birthday celebrations; and something we’ve become unintentionally good at… moving from one house to another – this time, son, Elia and his wife, Margot, moved and we helped.
Dad’s birthday, Amherstburg.
Elia’s birthday, Guelph.
George’s birthday, Toronto.
Recently we were included in an article in Toronto Life Magazine’s May issue about Torontonians who sold up (or moved out of their parent’s homes) and moved into vans.
https://torontolife.com
May 2018 issue of Toronto Life Magazine.
We’re anxious for this apartment to sell (fingers crossed it is soon!) though we don’t know what we are going to do when it does. Have you ever felt trapped or cornered? That is how we feel these days. Plus frustrated and impatient. We are ready to move on and start fresh again. Ideally in a place we love! So….we are dreaming, planning and scheming various options. Ideally we’d buy a small house somewhere in southwestern Ontario (not too far from those we love in Toronto, Guelph or Windsor) with a little yard for us and MacDuff. Not just anywhere. It must have a vibrant, creative community! We have not found our utopia yet. We have been looking at houses and lots in Prince Edward County, Collingwood and Grey County, Windsor and Essex County and one of Toronto’s latest ‘suburbs,’ Hamilton, and …. NOTHING appeals to us. This is absolutely déjà vu! We have looked at pre-fabs, Airstreams, tiny houses and are even considering moving out of the Volkswagen and into some sort of van conversion that is suitable for four seasons and includes a workspace and a bathroom. The van conversion plan would have us downsizing to practically nothing. We’re close to that now. The problem with that is that we don’t envision it as a long-term solution. That said, we didn’t envision living out of the Volkswagen for more than six months to a year! We feel like it could work for us for the next few years but it wouldn’t be an investment like real estate.
We’re struggling with these decisions because we want to be able to afford a future filled with travel, creativity and (fingers crossed) good health and not be property poor which was the situation when we last owned a home. This was our goal last year too, when we bought this apartment. We thought we had found a solution that would work for a while anyway, a longer while than a year! Looking back on the last five years we sometimes can’t fathom just how much we have seen, learned and experienced. We’d like to continue on that path but a home base, landing pad, crash pad – whatever you want to call it – also appeals. A place we can work from, receive mail, entertain, enjoy community. Of course, in an ideal world this home base would be in Corsica! However, it always comes back to proximity to family and friends. So, this is your invitation! Let’s all move to Corsica! We are ready.
Lemons grow wild everywhere!
Our Airbnb home for June 2013.
A typical east/west road in Cap Corse.
Us on a beach in Corsica.
We stumbled upon this parade in Bastia.
Wonderful friends we made while staying in Suare: Renee, Carole and Aldo.
One of many hikes. View on west side of island.
Erbalunga.
Lots of cows on beaches.
Our umbrella on our favourite beach in Pietracorbara.
One of our favourite beaches.
Another hike not far from Suare.
Julie at the top of the world!
Christian in Nonza.

Rear ended someone in a rental vehicle, will my premiums rise?
"Rear ended someone in a rental vehicle, will my premiums rise?
I was in a rental vehicle when I tapped the car in front of me. I drove a '11 Toyota Corolla and he an old Chevy Monte Carlo. I came to a complete stop before absentmindedly loosening my foot on the brake, thus I tapped him at perhaps 2-3mph, and left a light imprint of the license plate on his red bumper. I offered to negotiate a cash payment on the spot, I was thinking of a couple hundred, but he insisted costs to be over 1,500. I did pay for damage insurance on the rental, but not liability. I'm insured with Safeco in Southern California, will this affect my rates at all? I talked to a body shop and showed them pictures of the imprint, and they figured that repairs would be around 150-300, depending. I heard that premiums won't necessarily rise unless damages are over 750? Is that true, and if so what are some tips to keep them from rising at this point? (this would be the first accident where I am held liable)

Rear ended someone in a rental vehicle, will my premiums rise?
Car Insurance problem?
Yesterday my dad was in a car crash but thankfully no injury. The victim who crashed into our car had escaped and dashed off bout 6miles. The point of this story? The victim had stolen a car from a rental place and had been driving really fast probably. Figuring that this guy has no money and insurance, can not pay for the damage of my car. (I had bought it about a year ago, and used car) It seems Like we would have to pay 1mill yen (Japan) for this whole crap. Obviously this does not seem right at all, and should not be paying anything at all! Our insurance covers the accidents we get into, but not the damage of our car. So that means, our insurance doesn't cover it, the victims or the company (toyota) might not be covering it either. This case is rare supposedly and we're still figuring it out. And their on a hunt for this guy so hopefully we'll see what he has. Can you hear me out on this one? Can you give me things that might question this case? thnx a lot""

""My buddy is suing my insurance company, what could happen?""
Ok, So a little over a month ago i was involved in a car accident with a friends car. It was and 1 hr and 30 min drive. My friend said he was tired and drunk, telling me to drive( I was sober) so i did. I did tell him I didn't want to drive because his car was manual(which i can drive, but i've been driving auto for 4 years now. On the way home I fell asleep at the wheel and the car was totaled. None of us were injured, I was good he was good. We did the police report called our insurances. His paid him for his car. Two weeks later he's calling me to come-over to talk. I get bombarded by his family for 2hours basically saying they need money for this and that. The claim was already settled but he insisted i called my insurance company and see if they can give them money because they used the money they got from there insurance to pay off the car(worth about 5 grand) I talked it over with mom because im under her insurance and she said its sounds shady. She calls the insurance company and said dont give him a dime. Insurance is to make you whole again not better then you were. I explained to him numerous times and a week later my mom calls me at work and says gieco called and my friend is suing them. she also said he has a lawyer. He's suing for bodily injury! My told me not to stress it but it bothers me so much. He definitely doesn't deserve anything and especially being in perfect healthy condition. In the accident if you wanna get technical i took all the hits. I know him, my insurance company doesnt. its not right for him to be compensated for some injury that doesn't exist. Whats gonna happen? does he have a chance. the claim opened up is for $25,000 or more. this kid goes out clubbing and partying every weekend and this is how he lies? any input is appreciated. thanks again..""

Does auto insurance cover the vehicle or the driver (California)?
I work on a military installation and I'm required to have the appropriate decals on my car to enter through the gates. I went to renew my decals as they are only good for 3 years and I was denied. My vehicle ID number, make, model, and year is listed on both the registration and proof of insurance card. My name is on the registration so I thought this would suffice (especially because they already gave me decals/passes in the past). I always thought that insurance covered the car. Can anyone clarify this issue and reference the California Vehicle Code? I've searched and searched and cannot find accurate clarification. Do you think people who cause their own health problems should not be covered by insurance?
Some health problems are self-inflicted, others are not. If it can be proven that the health problem in question is self-inflicted, I don't understand why we don't force the patients to pay for it out of their own pockets? If such patients' heath care is covered by insurance companies, that cost is distributed among all their insurance customers. And that is unfair to people like me who go above and beyond to be healthy. Here are some example situations I am talking about: -A tanning bed sunbather who gets skin cancer -A chain smoker who gets lung cancer -A heavy drinker who gets cirrhosis of the liver -An unhealthy eater who gets Type II diabetes or heart disease -Someone with Type I diabetes who has kidney failure due to poor diabetes control. All of these health problems are their own fault (i.e. I think it is pretty well recognized that Paula Dean's diabetes is pretty much her own fault). What ever happened to personal responsibility?""

Health Benefits Of Polyphenols
When you walk down the aisle of your local health food store, looking at the wall of supplements can be enough to make your head spin.
Some of them are simple enough to understand.
Most of us know about the essential vitamins and minerals we need, even if we don’t know exactly what each one does or when to supplement them.
But that wall of supplements goes far beyond just vitamins and minerals, doesn’t it?
Curcumin? Glutathione? Phosphatidylserine? What on Earth are these things?
The answers to those questions are for another article.
Today, we’ll take a look at polyphenols.
These natural nutrients can serve as great natural heart health solutions, and have a number of other health benefits.
Read on to find out more.
What Are Polyphenols?
Polyphenols are organic chemicals that come from a number of different plant-based foods.
From the plant’s perspective, they offer a number of different benefits. They play a role in signaling when the plant’s fruit ought to begin ripening, protecting against ultraviolet radiation, and fighting off microbial infections.
There are a number of different substances which fall under the category polyphenol, and some have names you might recognize.
Quercetin, for example, is one of the better known polyphenols.
If you’re a wine enthusiast, you may have heard discussion about tannins. Tannins are what give a wine its dryness, and they’re also considered polyphenols.
Wine tannins usually come from the grape seed, skin, or the oak of the barrel in which it was aged.
Other polyphenols include:
Curcumin
Kaempferol
Catechins
Lignans
Capsaicin
Anthocyanins
Health Benefits Of Polyphenols
From a human health perspective, polyphenols offer a number of different health benefits.
Let’s take a look at what they are.
1. May Reduce Inflammation
Inflammation is one of your body’s responses to protect us from infection.
Sometimes, it’s a good thing.
For example, if you scrape your knee, part of your body’s way of repairing it is by inflaming the affected area.
However, chronic inflammation has been linked to many chronic illnesses, including:
Inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
Arthritis, particularly rheumatoid arthritis
Tuberculosis
Asthma
Hepatitis
Chronic ulcers
Reducing inflammation is one way to help manage these conditions.
A 2012 study by Liao Et Al found that an extract of the polyphenol-rich plant Cinnamomum cassia, or Chinese cinnamon, had excellent anti-inflammatory properties.
As well, curcumin is well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
Curcumin is what gives the spice turmeric its yellow colour. You can find it in many Indian foods, as well as in table mustard.
A 2015 study by Yan Et Al outlines its anti-inflammatory properties.
2. May Help Regulate Body Weight
Losing weight is an ongoing concern in modern society.
According to data from Statistics Canada, just over 1/3 of Canadians are considered to be overweight.
It seems like polyphenols may hold a solution for weight loss.
A 2011 study by Reza Rastmanesh found that a diet rich in polyphenols could help with weight loss by interacting with the gut’s microbiome.
Another study, this one in December 2019 by Peng Et Al found polyphenols from the plant Solanum nigrum, or black nightshade, were effective in reducing body fat by regulating lipid metabolism and decreasing the amount of adipocytes.
Adipocytes are cells your body uses to store fat.
And coming back to curcumin once more, a 2015 study by Di Pierro Et Al took a look at how curcumin could affect weight loss.
They gathered a group of people who’d made a concerted effort for 30 days to lose weight, without much success.
After that, they administered curcumin supplements along with phosphatidylserine, and found the rate of weight loss improved significantly.
3. May Reduce Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes
One of the main concerns associated with type 2 diabetes is hyperglycemia – high blood sugar.
Insulin is a hormone your body uses to metabolize sugar.
When you’re diabetic, your body either doesn’t produce insulin at all – type 1 – or it doesn’t produce enough to manage the sugar in your system – type 2.
Polyphenols help stimulate the production of insulin in your body.
They can also prevent starches from being broken down into sugars, which leads to a blood sugar surge after you eat.
4. May Reduce Blood Pressure And LDL Cholesterol
Remember the classic phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”?
Part of the reason for that is because of the polyphenol content of apples.
A study from December 2019 by Koutsos Et Al found that two apples a day were able to lower LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) in rats.
LDL cholesterol build-up is one of the main reasons leading to conditions like atherosclerosis . And because atherosclerosis is one of the leading causes of death, this research is promising.
5. May Help Improve Digestion
Having a healthy gut microbiome is critical to healthy digestion.
Broadly speaking, there are two ways to do that – support the growth of beneficial bacteria, and suppress the growth of harmful bacteria.
Polyphenols can help you do both.
In particular, they can promote the growth of bifidobacteria, and fight off salmonella, E. coli, and C. difficile.
As well, polyphenols have been shown effective in managing a number of digestive disorders, including inflammatory bowel diseases and peptic ulcers.
Dietary Sources Of Polyphenols
In general, you can get polyphenols from most plant-based foods. In particular, though, the following foods are particularly rich in them:
Cloves
Peppermint
Star anise
Chocolate, particularly dark chocolate
Blueberries
Strawberries
Raspberries
Blackberries
Cherries
Apples
Plums
Black beans
Hazelnuts
Walnuts
Pecans
Almonds
Artichokes
Spinach
Red onions
Soy, particularly tempeh
Black tea
Green tea
Wine, particularly red wine
Potential Risks From Polyphenols
Scientific research has only been exploring the effects of polyphenols for a short time, so we’re not as far in our understanding of them as we’d like to be.
There do seem to be some risks which we don’t fully understand yet, but for the most part those are associated with polyphenol supplements.
So if you eat a plant-based diet or you enjoy a cup of green tea, you probably don’t need to worry.
Polyphenol supplements may interact with certain prescription medications though, so be mindful of that.

18+ Unique Things to Do in Toronto
Tumblr media
You’ve smashed the standard Toronto itinerary. You’ve climbed the CN Tower for the views, shopped ‘til you drop at the Eaton Centre and snapped a selfie with the 3D Toronto sign at Nathan Phillips Square. So what next? This guide will share the best unique things to in Toronto including food, places to see and tours to take.
I (Gemma) went on a girls’ trip to Toronto, to spend time with my friend who flew over from Scotland, leaving my partner (the other Scot, Craig) back in BC. Never one to settle for the TripAdvisor top ten, I sourced tips on the cool places to go in Toronto using my good Canadian friend, Maddie, for her local tips. So let’s get started. Expedia asked me to create a guide on Toronto, all opinions are my own as usual.
18 Unusual but Cool Things to do in Toronto
1. Kensington Market
Kensington Market is where the interesting kids (and their dogs) hang out. The area is awash with quaint print shops, vintage stores, art, tattooists and every type of world cuisine you could imagine.
Want burritos and churros from Mexico – no hay problema! Arepas from Colombia – chevre! Frites from Belgium – Oui! Patties from Jamaica – Irie!
You’ll need some organic beer or hot cider to wash that down.
A couple of streets over from Kensington Market you’ll find Chinatown. Naturally, you can get cheap dim sum but we actually had the nicest pizza slice (C’mon it’s North America) on Spadina and College (Europeans – this means the crossroads where the two streets meet!)
We made Kensington Market our base and didn’t regret it. You can check out accommodation options for Kensington Market and other areas in the city at Expedia who offer great hotel options in Toronto for everyone.
2. Bata Shoe Museum
These boots were made for walking so get them stomping down to the pretty extraordinary Bata Shoe Museum (BSM) in Toronto where over 4,500 years of history is told through feet!
That’s a lot of souls shared through soles under the roof of this award-winning building. If you are looking at what to do in Toronto on a rainy day, the BSM is worth a stroll.
Expect to see everything from Chinese bound-foot shoes to celebrity shoes.
There are often special exhibitions at the BSM such as Manolo Blahnik’s The Art Of Shoes (made famous by those Sex And The City chicks).
Address: 327 Bloor St W.
Price: $14 CAD per adult.
3. Annex
The Annex area of Toronto (Bloor and Bathurst) is home to many of the University of Toronto students so you can expect coffee shops, discount stores, bars and cafes.
Annex is also where you can rock out at Lee’s Palace, visit Canada’s largest museum, Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and catch a film at Hot Doc’s Cinema.
4. Philosopher’s Walk
South from Bloor (Annex) you’ll find Philosopher’s Walk which is a lovely green space in the city if you want to walk off a coffee high, poutine or a hangover!
5. Madison Avenue Pub
What does one do with three Victorian mansions? You open a number of bars and connect them all of course! The Maddy has booths, games, outdoor seating and serves food.
Address: 14 Madison Ave.
6. Live Organic Food Bar
Reward your hungover body with plant-based, sugar-free food which is served up daily at the Live Organic Food Bar. The menu which includes kimchi pancakes and pulled burdock burrito is organic, gluten and wheat free too.
Address: 264 Dupont St.
7. Toronto’s Half House
Rarely do you hear of a city v resident demolishment story fall on the side of the homeowner but in this case, we have a winner! The Valkos family of 54 ½ St. Patrick Street. won the battle to remain in the 1970s so the developers sliced it in half like a birthday cake.
Toronto’s famous Cube House looks to have lost its plot to a scrapyard so check out the Half House before the other half disappears too.
Address: 54 ½ St. Patrick St (thanks for the picture Andrew Stapley!)
8. Graffiti Alley
Obviously cool equates to graffiti in any city! Toronto’s Queen Street West has its own colorful corridor of street art. Unfortunately, the word is out at the two blocks of graffiti get rammed with visitors so go early for those Instagram worthy shots!
Address: Rush Lane.
9. Trinity Bellwoods Park
Grab a few beers from Bellwoods Brewery and head to Trinity Bellwoods Park for a serious people-watching sesh!

10. Hipster Queen + King
Move over Kensington, there’s a hipper kid in town. Queen West was crowned one of the world’s hippest neighborhoods by Vogue but with notoriety comes price increase.
From Bathurst and Gladstone, over a hundred stores are occupied by studios, shops, galleries and bars. It’s a great place for brunching too.
11. CN Tower Edgewalk
Sure, everyone that visits Toronto heads to the Entertainment District and takes the elevator to the viewing floor of the CN Tower but how many tourists walk the walk?
Leave the comfort of the secured windows and hang handsfree from the circumference of the roof with The Edge urban adventure experience (356m/1,168ft above the ground).
This is probably the most expensive activity going in Toronto but if you are a thrill seeker you might just want to take the plunge (well, hang not plunge).
Address: 301 Front St W.
12. Toronto Island
Unlike Vancouver Island’s proximity to Vancouver, Toronto Island is actually close to Toronto!
The island can be reached by boat and takes about 15 minutes to cross Lake Ontario.
There are three stops – Ward’s Island, Centre Island and Hanlan’s Point. We exited at Ward Island and slowly made our way to Centre Island; I biked, and Helen strolled.
So what’s on offer?
Toronto Island is like a beautiful big park. Ward Island is unique because it’s a small town with a small number of beautiful houses. These are very sought after.
Rather than paying top dollar to secure a property, hopeful buyers instead have to add their name to a capped list of 500 in the hope of moving their way up to the 100 mark. When a property is available the top 100 will be offered it at a fixed price.
The ethos is to ‘keep it simple.’ With these views of Toronto’s skyline (below), you can see the attraction.
The Island Cafe is a popular family-owned lunch spot. The resident and cafe owners aim to use fresh produce from local farmers and also sell home baking.
Centre Island has a pier, small farm, lighthouse, fairground, maze and a clothing-optional beach.
No one needs to see these fading white bits so I left the towel back on the mainland!
13. St Lawrence Market Events/Tours
With over 200 years of action, I know what you are thinking – how is St Lawrence Market a unique thing to do in Toronto?
Although one of the popular Toronto attractions, this food and antiques market is special and it is the merchants that make it that way. With over 120 stores selling everything from shrimp to shortbread, you can easily swallow up an hour or two at the market.
Craig would be happy to see ‘proper bacon’ rolls being served too.
If you are in town for a few days, check out the special events, talks and maybe even a food tour in Toronto?
Address: 93 Front St E.
Just four minutes from St Lawrence Market you will find the stunning and extremely photogenic French Gothic, Gooderham (Flatiron) Building. Well worth a snap if you are a keen photographer.
14. The Distillery District
The red-bricked Victorian-era buildings of the Distillery District now play home to 40 boutique shops including clothes, craft beer and candles.
There is also a variety of restaurants and cafes from ice cream shops to oyster bars. A food market runs every Sunday during summer too. During winter, the Christmas Market sets up here.
15. Red Heart / Parliament and Gristmill Lane
This red sculpture was created for the Toronto Christmas Market mistletoe to hang come December but stands all year round for lovers to walk through and have a smooch underneath!
16. Lovel Lock Sign
Forget Paris, Toronto has a designated sign which spells out ‘love’ for its locks and it makes a great picture for Instagram! We saw two engagement shoots in the area.
Take a picture and show me it, lovers! Send me your shots [email protected]
Toronto Light Festival
If you happen to visit Toronto in January through to March, don’t miss the annual Light Festival which takes place to force residents outside during the -20 harsh winters. Expect installations, lights and even fire.
Address: Distillery District.
17. Ghost Walks in Toronto
90 minutes of gore, graveyards and ghosts sound appealing? You can take a Toronto haunted walk tour and stroll through the Financial District to the Old Town hearing stories of scary tales.
18. Nuit Blanche
During the first Saturday night in October, art opens up normally sleepy spots around the city to encourage locals and visitors to go outside and engage with the exhibitions.
Museums stay open late and public art runs throughout the whole night. Expect lots of crowds, I was really impressed with how many citizens were taking advantage of the well prepared annual event.
Nuit Blanche exhibitions include print, projections, light, film, DJs, political and social justice commentary. Some take place outside, others inside. I really liked the large elephants which came in lots of shades!
Toronto Essential Information
Shopping in Toronto
For brand names, the Eaton Centre is not to be missed but remember Toronto whacks a 13% HST (harmonised sales tax) on top of prices so shop with caution!
If vintage is your bag (like me), check out the shops in Kensington Market as well as those scattered along Queens Street and in Annex neighborhood.
You might want to check out our cheap accommodation guide cheap accommodation guide to Toronto too.
History
Toronto has lots of history, look out for the blue plaques on the side of buildings to find out what they used to be. We spotted the jail, the old post house and Gooderham Building (that thin one from Pinterest!)
Niagara Falls
No trip to Ontario would be complete without the ninety-minute journey to Niagara. We hopped aboard a group tour which stopped off at one of Niagara’s vineyards so we could taste the delicious ice wine from the Niagara region before getting wet at Niagara Falls.
Transport in Toronto
Toronto is a grid system and is really easy to navigate.
Full of beans, we pounded the streets for the first few days (walking from Kensington Market to the Old Town will take about an hour) but by midweek our feet were pleading with us so we used the streetcar and subway system.
You can purchase day tickets, which let you use any mode of transport to get around the city.
How to Get to Toronto From Pearson Airport
From Pearson Airport, the quickest but more expensive way to travel is by the Union Pearson Express (UPE). This train takes 25 minutes and costs just under $13 CAD one way to Downtown.
The more economical option takes longer, naturally. For $3 CAD, a 75-minute journey using the public transport system will get you to and from the airport. Take the Airport Rocket (bus 192) to Kipling (approx. 45 minutes) then the green line subway into the city, your stop will depend on where your accommodation is. You may then need a streetcar or the yellow subway line.
A taxi will cost approximately $60.
We did option two and I was a little hurried at the airport so leave ample time.

My Final Tip for Toronto
The only thing you need a map for is to look lost.
As soon as you take it out, a local will approach you to ask if you need help! It’s a help magnet.
And don’t believe what other Canadians say about Canadian city folk not being friendly, if someone in Edinburgh (Scotland) saw you with a map, they’d cross over the street!
