Tag Yourself based off Me and My Siblings
The Oldest Sibling:
Pure of heart, dumb of ass.
Seems mature but is a child at heart.
Feels self conscious about it most of the time.
Can be serious when they need to though, especially when it comes to the well-being and safety of their siblings.
Would kill and/or die for their siblings. They mean everything to them.
Always give their siblings first choice of everything.
Tends to wander off without telling anyone. Seriously. Keep a close eye on them in any public space.
Expressive, talks with their whole body, especially with their hands and arms.
Loves to tease and poke fun at their friends and siblings alike. All in good fun though. They would never do so maliciously.
Never hesitates to give you a hug or hold your hand. They might even kiss you on the cheek or the hand, if you're comfortable.
Always a shoulder to cry on and an ear to vent to. They might cry with you too.
Always kinda tired but gets particularly sleepy when it's cold or rainy. Will drag you into a cuddle session every time.
Tries to give their siblings good advice but it occasionally flops.
Drags their siblings on adventures constantly. Dislikes staying inside.
Amateur gardener. Plants mostly tomatoes and herbs, plus catnip to lure stray cats.
"Let's go down this route today! I wanna see what we can find!"
Aesthetic: String lights, exploring abandoned spaces, head in the clouds, fluffy comforters, rain on airplane windows, urban areas, burning leaves, baggy hoodies, ocean waves clouded with sand, milk tea, translucent curtains, open fields, sketchbooks and grided paper, bay windows, polished crystals, old cars, scented candles, essential oils, museums, combat boots, neon colored bandaids on fingers, plants in glass bottles, dancing in the forest with you, making shrines to the spirits of nature, grass stained jeans, animal themed onesies, mini cacti, flower blossoms in shoe holes
The Middle Sibling:
Probably the most mature one out of the bunch really.
A bit of a broken soul because of how many times they have been hurt in the past but still a kind, sweet person to hang out with.
Makes sure you're hydrated, fed, getting enough sleep, etc.
Not much of a touchy-feely person but when they are, it's sweet and genuine.
On another note, when they are in the mood to be playful, their teasing can even rival that of the oldest.
Loves to bake and wants to do it professionally someday.
Tries to keep the other two out of trouble.
Non confrontational and strives to keep the peace.
Lives by three rules: stay positive, let go of the past and never be afraid to ask for help.
Particular about their clothing.
Tends to wear a lot of solid dark and neutral tones but is actually the biggest sucker for bright colors and patterns.
Just a big sucker for soft things in general.
"Hey, I baked you your favorite treat as thanks for the new plushie. I loved it! It's gonna stay on my bed."
Aesthetic: Rubber bracelets, aluminum pins, buttercream frosting, sugar cookies, icing stained shirts and flour streaked face, pastel flowy sundresses, flower crowns, round rimmed glasses, experimenting with colors and patterns, wooden floors, silk ribbons, knit sweaters and cardigans, heart shaped barrettes, clouds illuminated by the sunset, long walks to nowhere, puddles on the sidewalk, berry lemonade, apple scented dish soap, stuffed animals, tear stained cheeks
The Youngest Sibling:
The most withdrawn of the three. Even has trouble being open and honest with their siblings.
Still a sweet person. They just need an occasional boost of confidence.
Hugest fan of video games ever, especially the ones from the 80s and 90s.
Actually dislikes going outside. Would prefer to stay indoors but still tags along with their siblings.
Basically lives in sweatpants.
Has the quirkiest little habits like how they sit in chairs or put on their jacket.
Has a huge collection of posters and replica weapons from their favorite video games.
Has the worst sleep schedule known to mankind.
Probably doesn't know what a hairbrush is.
Terrible at keeping their room clean but takes good care of their chores.
Often makes themselves a second dinner late in the night.
Knows the history of their favorite games front to back.
"I know you might not get it but thanks for letting me knowledge dump on you."
Aesthetic: Secrets behind closed doors, sleeping in late, lone wolf, inside voice, headphones, old photos, loud music, night owl, noisy keyboards, caffeine addiction, hooded jackets, worn out slip-ons, pet hair on clothes, thunderstorms, tired eyes, messy bedhead, late night snacking, retro game cartridges, neon lights, replica swords

(Fake ASMR Commission) A Wholesome Morning With Your Girlfriend
------------------------------------------------------------
*try to use your best morning voice for this whole thing. and also sound loving at the same time. kinda like what you did with your 'Cuddling On A Rainy Day' audio*
*adorable yawn*
"Mmm~ Have I ever told you how wonderful it is to fall asleep to the sound of your heartbeat?"
...
"It's just so... Divine... Soothing... Lovely... Other such positive words..."
"Just hearing the subtle yet strong sound it makes... Feeling it's gentle rhythmic beating against my face. It's music to my ears."
"And of course... It lets me know that you're alive & well... Here with me... And that nothing can go wrong."
...
"Well... I suppose anything could go wrong. Like... An asteroid impact or... A hostile alien invasion."
...
"Hehehe~ Unlikely."
"So... It's the weekend. What do you wanna do today? I was thinking we could go to the beach."
...
"Aww, why not? You'd get to see me in a bikini. I know you'd like that."
...
"I'll let you rub sunscreen on me~"
...
"I see you blushing~ Is that a Yes?"
...
"Hehehe~ Looks like all I had to do was entice you in a flirtatious manner. I knew you wouldn't be able to resist. We could also search for fulgurite while we're there.
...
"You've never heard of fulgurite. Really? Well actually... No, that's fair. It's not something that's often talked about or even all that well known."
...
"So basically... When there's a thunderstorm on a beach, lightning can strike wet sand & turn that sand into a crystal. Just like how fire can turn sand into glass. These crystals are fulgurite. Once the storm has passed, you can safely look around on the beach for them. Might need a shovel to do some digging though."
...
"I know right? That's so cool. It's basically crystallized lightning that you can hold in your hands. It can be sold off at high prices as jewelry. And gem enthusiasts will pay a pretty penny to get some for themselves. The larger crystals sell for a fortune. You can get rich quick if you just dig around for some fulgurite."
...
"Keeping some as decorations is also an option. It's valuable regardless."
"Anyway... I also wanna go shopping today... Buy some ice cream. Flavors that help me cope with the criminal lack of banana ice cream."
...
"I know banana ice cream exists, but I mean like... PURE banana ice cream. The only kinds I know are like... Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey. Which is banana flavored, but it's got fudge & nuts in it. And some obscure brands that are like... Banana pudding with vanilla wafers & marshmallows."
...
"See, that's my point. There's no ice cream out there that's just... PURE banana. I don't want all this extra stuff in it. Just banana flavored ice cream. Plain & simple."
"Another thing we could do is make banana bread batter & just eat that."
...
"Whaaaaat? It's not weird. It at least isn't any weirder than eating cookie dough which everyone does. My mom did this for me all the time when I was a kid. She'd just make banana bread batter & let me eat that. It's basically banana ice cream, but with a different texture. Sometimes, she wouldn't even bake the bread."
...
"Hmmm... Cookie dough ice cream actually does sound pretty bomb, not gonna lie."
...
"Nnnggghhh... I still don't feel getting out of bed yet. You're just so soft... And warm... And... God, you feel like Heaven."
...
"When you love someone enough, you can tolerate their morning breath. Besides, I have morning breath to."
...
"We could just use the bathroom & come back to bed, but... Once I'm out of bed, I feel like I have to commit to the day."
"It's like waking up really early. I'll check my phone, notice that it's only, like... 2AM or something... And it's just so lame because I know it won't be easy to fall back asleep."
"But if I don't then I'll just end up nodding off around noon."
...
"My point is that I feel there hasn't been sufficient enough bedtime with you this morning."
...
"Glad we're on the same page."
"Hmmmmm~ I wanna hold your hand."
...
"Yeah, I'm just gonna do that."
"Soft... Warm... Comforting... Hahhh... This is so peaceful."
...
"Haha~ Yes, how lewd. We're holding hands before marriage. Such an act would be heavily censored on television."
"And now... I'll use my other hand... To brush your hair."
*Oh, Swedish Fish Kun! Fake has a job for you! Or Grenifer... Whichever she chooses.*
"I love spoiling you with affection. You deserve it so much."
*keep brushing*
"I don't know when we'll get out of bed. I guess when it gets too hot. There's a lot of body heat accumulating under these covers."
*more brushing*
"It's a shame that Summer cuddles aren't nearly as pleasant as Winter cuddles. Another reason why Winter is the superior season. You can bundle up as much as you want until you're warm. In the Summer, you can only get so naked."
*okay. you can stop brushing now.*
"It's a good thing we don't live in Arizona. That state is infamous for it's heat."
...
"I'm sure there are hotter places in the world. But Arizona is just... Built different."
...
"Nooooo~ Don't go yet~ Snuggle me more~"
...
"I know it's getting stuffy, but... I'm just too comfortable to move right now."
...
"I'll pepper you with kisses~ You don't even need to be under the blankets."
...
"Good answer. Now c'mere~"
*repeated peck kisses all over the listener's face*
"*giggle* No one can resist a kiss barrage~"
*more kisses*
"There's that adorable blush I was looking for. Now what if I do this..."
*smooch on lips*
"*giggle* Hahhh... I love you so much. I just can't get enough of you. You fill my life with so much happiness."
...
"Let's hold each other for a few more minutes. Then we can start the day."
------------------------------------------------------------

Woke up at 9:45, which is pretty early for me! Actually got out of bed instead of rolling over and going back to sleep, which would have been very easy to do.
I have the same breakfast every day because it's perfect. Today was no exception.
It's raining out, which is great - we needed some rain! It's also cooling down my apartment, which was starting to get uncomfortably warm (we do not get air conditioning in Europe).
A towel in my bathroom smelled awful, which was a good reminder that I needed to do a load of laundry for my towels, which specifically need to be washed on high heat. This has now been done and they are hanging up to dry! Clean laundry is legit the best.
I've been waiting on delivery of a t-shirt I ordered several weeks ago (I have a tracking number but it still says the package hasn't been handed over to them for delivery yet). I wrote the t-shirt company yesterday to check on it and I have a reply! They say the package must be lost at this point, so they are re-sending it. Gonna get my t-shirt!!! 🙌
There's a new episode of Game Changer out today (technically last night, but they release at 1 am my time zone, which is too late to let myself get that excited). I watched it over breakfast and it was a fucking delight, unsurprisingly. (If you don't know what that is, get Dropout, it will not disappoint you. There are also tumblr accounts for @gamechangershow @dropoutdottv and @samreich where you can see some teasers.)
Meatball soup for lunch! (Recipe: frozen meatballs, frozen sweet corn, frozen peas, frozen carrot/parsley root/celery root mix, frozen pre-sliced mushrooms, ground cayenne pepper, dried wild garlic, a scoop of high quality vegetable stock powder, water: boil 15 minutes, fucking delicious every time, low-effort, pretty healthy, and perfect for a rainy day)
Making COOKIES. Specifically a recipe I've been tweaking for a while trying to make it as healthy as possible while still retaining the texture and shelf stability of a normal cookie. I will eventually share the recipe, once I've got it how I want it. (Currently waiting for butter to soften; will update later.)
Weather has been lovely lately, so had planned a beer garden visit with local friends this evening, but thanks to the rain, plans have changed. Instead of an expensive and loud beer garden (or pub indoors, which I have made clear I'm not willing to do because Covid), we have adjusted the plan to hang out in one of their apartments. SOCIALIZING! I will be bringing them cookies.
I'm initiating a new weekly tradition called Perfect Tuesdays. (Why Tuesdays? Because I just thought of it and it's Tuesday.)
On Perfect Tuesdays, nothing goes wrong. No matter what happens, I will find a way to twist it into being positive.
Why? I am a chronic complainer and I know it. My life is legitimately difficult. I have multiple disabilities and chronic health problems, I am socially isolated, I am burnt out, the world is burning down in a hundred different horrible ways. But complaining about shit all the time is not helping, and I know for a fact that forcing yourself to say positive things can have a positive psychological effect. So I'm giving this a shot - for one day a week. Join me if you like. I'll be tagging relevant posts with: #PerfectTuesdays
Obligatory Tumblr disclaimer: I am not denying all the horrible things happening in the world or refusing to care about them. This is specifically a personal quest to try to salvage my crumbling mental health using imagination and whimsy.
Anyway this seems like the sort of thing Tumblr might enjoy, so I'm documenting my first Perfect Tuesday. I'll keep the updates in replies to this post. 🤘
Meep believes in you.

My Little Sun - Spencer Reid x Reader
It could not be heaven because her actions, her sounds and her intentions were the opposite of sanctity and purity: they were sinful. So bad and so good that you could get the two confused.
CW: MENTIONS OF KIDNAPPING, IMPLIED SMUT, AGE GAP, LANGUAGE, DADDY KINK. (LMK IF I MISSED ANY PLEASE)
PART ONE
PART TWO
A/N: Shiiit!!! Sorry this mediocrity took so long!!! Anyway, let me know if you want me to clear anything up and please let me know if you like it. Kisses <3
I had the right to be upset, but I knew I shouldn’t be. Hotch was right, I could not work the case nor was I in the state to. It was for my own good and maybe the sanity of the rest of the team. I was a mess. He “ordered” me to go get some sleep in the breakroom, knowing I would never agree to go home. But like always, I couldn’t sleep. That wasn’t unusual and my brain began me to torture me with a movie of my most recent memories.
Friday - 8:49 PM
“I waannt Thaiiii foooood!” Only she could make my heart melt while simultaneously whining and disagreeing with me. She tightened her grip on my hand, “Pretty, pretty please?”
“We had Thai last week.” I looked down at her as we continued walking down the streets. “And plus, you love the Greek place.” She pouted and continued to ramble about why Thai was so much better. Even complaining, her company was so comforting and calming that I was genuinely relaxed, despite the roars of taxi cabs and the indistinct chatter of drunk city goers.
“Oh my god! Don’t look! Do not look left!” She skipped to my right, “Look-look at me!” I watched her skip around me and cling to my right arm before her little hands grabbed my face and pressed her mouth to mine.
“Sweetheart,” I tried to get out of her grip but she cut me off by pressing her body to mine and continuing the frenzied kiss. As soon as she needed a breath, I spun in the other direction. “You’re a monster.” I grabbed her hand and we ran to it immediately. A life-size and functioning chess board under an array of colorful lanterns and vines. It was probably a contemporary art piece and I silently thanked whoever created it. I wrapped my arms around her as I excitedly admired it. “Why didn’t you want me to see this?” I whispered into the small of her neck. “Is it because I always beat you at chess?”
She backed up from me offended, “You don’t always beat me!”
I grabbed her once more, not liking the space between us. “If you took all of our games, looked at my wins and your losses, I’ve won 98% of the time.”
“Yeah well…” she tiptoed and grazed her lips against mine, “I win 100% of the time.” I was confused, “At this.” She pressed her entire body to mine and finally kissed me.
“You,”
Kiss.
“Don’t know,”
Kiss.
“What you’re,”
Kiss.
“Starting little,”
Kiss.
“Girl.”
She grabbed my hand and twirled herself around just to fall back onto me. I caught her, just like she knew I would. I trusted her and she trusted me, and that was the best feeling in the world. “I love you.” I said, still supporting all her weight.
She stood upright and gave me a light kiss. “I love you so much Spencer.”
I couldn’t see anything in the world but her. “I would do anything for you.”
She perked up with a sneaky glint in her eye, “Would you eat Thai two weeks in a row?” She grinned.
I sighed. She won. “Yeah,” I pushed the hair out of her face, “I would. Let’s go get some.”
“If..” she rolled her eyes, “We play on the walk back.” I motioned to the board. “I’ll go easy on you.”
“You’re on Dr. Reid.” she snarked back.
Saturday - 2:31 PM
Saturday was one of those stereotypical rainy days where the world seemed slowed. The pitter patter of the raindrops and the light music of her favorite record created a symphony of other-worldly peace for me. I left our room, and there she was, my perfect girl sitting criss crossed at my desk. I perched over her, laying a sweet kiss on her cheek.
“So..I was thinking macaroons…” she scrolled through different catering sites, “But cupcakes are a must too.” I watched her plan in adoration. Never in my life had I been so sure of anything. But I wanted to marry this girl and spend every last day of my life like this one and there was no question about it. It was that simple.
“Spence?” she broke me out of my lovelorn daydreams of growing old together.
“Yeah?” I answered.
“Chocolate or red velvet? There is one right answer.” her eyes narrowed.
“Oh,” I knew exactly what she wanted me to say, “Red velvet. All the way.”
“You really are a genius.” She teased and began to scribble ‘Red Velvet’ on the small notebook next to her. I looked at the list of random little things she’d written down in preparation for the day. It assured me she was just as infatuated with the idea of a future together as I was. I sighed, “Even your handwriting is cute.”
“Duh..” she retorted and I rolled my eyes, “Can I read you the food list?” I gently lifted her off the desk seat, “You can read it to me on the couch maybe?”
She nodded and grabbed her notebook. I sat first, and she took the opportunity to crawl in my lap. It’s like our bodies were made for each other because she just fit so perfectly there.
“For the dessert table, hazelnut, pistachio and vanilla macaroons. From the French bakery in downtown. Obviously. Red velvet cupcakes from that bakery JJ told me about. Remember the ones she ordered for her baby shower?” I nodded. “Those.”
“White chocolate macadamia nut cookies, and if I get my way..”
“You always do.” I teased. “Yeah, and don’t forget it.” she smiled, “Tiny little cheesecake squares.”
“I’m glad we’re on the same page.” I said. “Of course! A lot of tiny desserts are waaay better than one big cake.”
“And more sanitary.” It was her turn to sigh.
“Yes yes, and more sanitary.” She laid her head in my chest and closed her eyes.
“I told Penelope we’d meet her at the restaurant at 3.”
“But it’s raining!” I complained. Truthfully, I just didn’t want this moment to end. She gave me a look and I stopped my protests. “Y’know if we order an Uber instead of taking the metro, we might have time to take a nice…” her words purposely trailed, “Long...hot shower.” She didn’t really have to say much else, batting her eyelashes to give this heart wrenching illusion of innocence. I wasn't buying it. Then, being way too coy for her age, she ran her hands up my chest and flashed me a coquettish grin. It was textbook but, goddd. Her smile alone turned me on to an extent it shouldn’t.
I let her off my lap and stood up instantly, grabbing her hand and leading her to our bathroom. “Now.”
Sunday - 9:22 AM
The view convinced me I had died and arrived in heaven. I had to be. Where else but heaven does an angel perch themselves on your lap? No, though. It wasn’t heaven. It could not be heaven because her actions, her sounds and her intentions were the opposite of sanctity and purity: they were sinful. So bad and so good that you could get the two confused.
She kissed down my neck and I swore my heart would burst out of my chest. She paused and sat up to say “When was the last time we got a whole weekend together like this?”
I rubbed her arms up and down, “I can’t even remember.”
“Me neither.” She kind of sounded like she wanted to say something else, but I didn’t really care, kissing her open mouth and rocking my hips up to hers. She was panting by the time my hands met her chest. “Please,” she whined, “Daddy, please.”
She had no idea what she was asking for but I did. So I gave it to her.
I would give her anything.
Monday 7:02 AM
“Bye baby.” I kissed her still bed-headed hair.
“NOooo!” she tried to pull my satchel back into her mess of sheets.
“I’m sorry.” I sat down on the edge of the bed next to her. She curled her head into my lap and I caressed her forehead.
“You have class today.” I felt her twitch, “An important one. You should eat a good breakfast.”
“I know.” she said sadly. I registered that the sadness was less about class, and more about the fact we both knew this was goodbye for at least a couple days. Time spent together was bliss and days apart were agonizing, regardless of how important both of our responsibilities were.
“Hey, think about what a good weekend we had.” I gently reminded her.
“I know but now you’re gonna be gone.” The pain in her voice brought me the kind of sorrow that you didn’t wish upon your worst enemy.
“Not for too long, little girl.” I kissed her forehead again, “I promise.”
She got up and sighed, “Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”
I wish she wouldn’t do that, but I couldn’t blame her either.
“I’m sorry.” She just shook her head.
“Don’t be. Go save some lives Dr. Reid.” there was a gentle smile on her face as she said the words, “I’ll be right here when you get back.” I enveloped her in a hug with nothing but love, and she still couldn't resist teasing me, “Or maybe drunk at a Frat house, I don’t know.”
My eyes went wide and the thought immediately gave me anxiety, “Please, do not. Do you know-” She shut me up with a kiss and I silently thanked her for it. “I love you Spencer. I’ll see you soon.” “I love you more.” I got up and headed for the door, “Sooner than later, okay?”
She nodded, “Okay.”
Wednesday 2:10 AM
I silently stepped through the apartment, relishing in the stillness that meant just maybe, my begging Y/N not to waste sleep over me had worked, but I still doubted it. Her listening to my instructions was like a solar eclipse: disappointingly rare.
As soon as I made it to the bedroom though, I was pleasantly surprised. She was asleep, but not yet under the covers. Poor thing had tried to stay up, but couldn’t. As much as I wanted to instantly smother her in affection, I restrained myself only to admire the sight of her in nothing but underwear and a grey cardigan of mine. She’d only done a single button too, obscuring the direct view so her figure was just barely covered. It was incredibly attractive and she knew it.
I began to undress, trying to remain silent as I exchanged my tie and vest for pajama pants and the Caltech sweater on the dresser. I didn’t wear it much before she did. In fact, I’d only started wearing it because despite it being 5 sizes too big for her, she adored it. For the first couple months of knowing her, it was the only thing she slept in. And because of that, it smelled like her perfume. Nestling myself into bed next to her, I wrapped my hands around her waist and pulled her close, while trying to gently pull the sheets out from under her.
“Get under the covers.” Her eyes fluttered open, “Spence...Spencer?” She smiled, “Spencer!”
She buried herself impossibly closer to my chest, arms and legs wrapping around me like a…
“You’re like a panda.” I laughed. She giggled, “You’re bamboo.”
“Are you calling me a stick-skinny? That’s hurtful, y/n.” We laughed harder until I couldn’t stop myself from kissing her. The kisses were long and sweet as we both savored the reunion. She tugged on the sweater I wore, “Why are you wearing my sweatshirt?” I brushed some hair out of her face. “It was mine first.” She rolled her eyes, “Pff...did you even go to Caltech?” She was trying so hard to control laughter, “Poser.”
She laughed as I’m sure despite silence from me she could hear my internal screaming.
Her laughter finally ceased when my grip on her got looser and my eyes hung a little lower. “Sleepy?” she asked.
I nodded and so did she, “Me too.” We got under the covers together.
“Hold me.” she hummed. “Hotch give you guys the day off tomorrow?”
“Yeah, recuperation. The case was...rough.”
“You guys catch the guy?” she asked.
I nodded, “Yeah.” “That’s amazing Spence. You’re so amazing.” I held her tighter.
“I love you.” I said.
“I love you too. Now go to sleep.” And so I did.
Thursday 6:30 PM
“It did indeed. You’ve become my solnyshko moyo.”
“Tell me that’s Russian dirty talk.” She said with a grin.
“It’s better. It’s a term of endearment you’ve become the epitome of.”
“And what’s that Dr. Reid?” she giggled.
“My little sun. You’ve become my little sun. Following me around and bringing light and warmth.” She snuggled herself impossibly closer into my chest, wrapping one of her legs over mine.
“Except for your feet!” I shrieked at her freezing toes meeting mine.
“They’re not that cold you big baby!” she shouted.
I laughed and kissed her sweetly, “I am not the baby here.” I said.
“Please,” she started until I interrupted her with a kiss, “If you’re not the baby,” I kissed her again, “That implies I’M the baby,” Kiss, “And I’m not a” Kiss.
“Shush baby.” I told her, but like always, she didn’t listen, instead sitting up to straddle me. My appreciation for her beauty was like how a prisoner appreciates freedom, and yet it was miniscule into what I found in her character. It blew my mind that a girl so perfect existed.
“Rarely do great virtue and beauty dwell together. Francesco Petrarch.” I started, my hands making their way onto her hips, “That makes you a rarity.”
“You’re spoiling me with nice words today Spencer.” “You’ve spoiled me. My frontal lobe is spoiled milk.” She laughed, wondering how I was going to manage to make this one romantic.
“That’s the part of the brain responsible for sensibility and logical thinking, and you, little girl, have positively ruined it. You make me stupid.”
“I ruined the genius Dr. Reid with the 187 IQ? Makes sense. I’m like, way smarter.”
“You are. So, so much smarter.”
“I want that in writing.” she poked my chest.
I pulled her down and kissed her forehead to whisper in her ear. “Not a chance.”
She pushed herself away and rolled her eyes at me like a bratty child does her nanny, and I continued, “ You’re smarter, but I’m more educated. I have more doctorates than you have years in university.”
“Whatever…”
I brushed the hair away from her perfect face, “You tired baby?”
She sighed and laid down, splaying herself on my chest, laying on me like I was the duvet. “Very.”
I held her impossibly close, breathing in her scent and counting every time her heart thumped, her bpm said she was relaxed. Oh god, I wanted her like this forever. Relaxed in my arms, where nothing could touch us but each other.
Present Day
Sunday 11:45 PM
How did it all seem so incredibly long ago? The BAU break room couch was definitely not made for sleeping, and yet Hotch had insisted I come try to get some rest. What was the use? How was I supposed to rest knowing that Y/N was out there in so much danger? I couldn’t rest until we found her, everybody knew that.
Morgan came rushing into the tiny room, “Garcia’s got a hit. Her father left her 3 of his commercial properties, one of which is an abandoned mall.”
I wasn’t allowed to work on the profile, but this was, for lack of a better word, a clear trap. “Morgan, it can’t be that easy. We both know that.”
“Kid, she’s having a psychotic break. Everything about this is disorganized. It wasn’t planned at all. It’s not that much of a stretch to say she’d go to a secluded place she figured we’d never find.”
“Was there a second stressor? JJ and I thought it might’ve been the proposal but…”
“Reid, I’ll brief you in the car. Get your shit together and let’s go get Y/N.”

Raining in Reverse || Alfie & Raina
Timing: Current. Location: Downtown. Parties: @rainaim & @yikesimonfire Summary: A friendship blossoms during a rainstorm. Content: None.
A rainy day in White Crest spelled death for the Ramirez family, not that the majority of the townsfolk had any idea why. On days like today — with the fatal droplets of water plummeting from the sky — Alfie stayed tucked away inside, longing for the sun.
That wasn’t the case today.
The fridge in Alfie’s apartment was a barren wasteland and without a crumb of food hiding in the cabinets, he had no choice but to embark on a perilous journey. He donned his best raincoat and boots, grabbed his trusty umbrella, and begrudgingly left the safety of his apartment. It would be too risky to try and wrangle the umbrella in and out of his car without getting wet. He had no choice but to head to the grocery store on foot.
For the most part, his trip was going better than expected. Alfie made the quick trip to the store without issue. It wasn’t until he stepped out (grocery bag of fresh fruits and sunflower seeds in tow) that disaster struck.
Without warning, the wind picked up as he trudged past Flagg’s and plucked the umbrella straight from Alfie’s grasp.
“Fuck, fuck, fuckity fuck!” Alfie squawked. Without hesitation, he ducked his head under his raincoat, consequently dropping his food supply in the process. He hastily made an about face before he half-ran, half-shuffled after his umbrella which was now somersaulting down the sidewalk. “No, nononono!” he croaked.
Rain hit his single layer of protection and rolled down his back before soaking the exposed part of his shirt. The wet fabric clung to his skin and Alfie let out a pained screech. He spun around, frantically searching for shelter. To hell with the umbrella! He was going to die!
Raina wasn’t sure why White Crest had erected such a sweet tooth in her. Normally, she’d eat a few cookies and call it a day. Lately, she found herself with tins of caramel chews, cookies, and fudge. Maybe it was Maine that had awoken something in her, playing into the idea of excitement and being in a grand, new place. Regardless of whatever it was, she knew that she was giving the shop’s of White Crest her hard earned money-- as she should. The town had welcomed her graciously into its (unforgiving) arms. It wasn’t like she had any qualms, at least, not in the usual sense. Even if she did, she would write them off with ease.
Flagg’s was a constant stop for her at this point. After work. Before work on closing shifts. Even days where she didn’t have work. There were too many flavors to pass up. Some good, some not so great, but Raina wanted to try them all. Plus, it wasn’t like she had much else to do to pass the time. Her roommate worked long hours at the hospital, and usually Raina was left to her own devices. There wasn’t even anyone to call from back home. Her aunt’s number rang and rang, until one day it finally told her that it was disconnected. Raina was alone, but she didn’t have to be.
She walked out of the shop, spoon hanging out of her mouth while Rainbow Freeze coated her taste buds. Raina barely noticed that it had begun to storm, not until an extreme gust of wind forced somebody’s umbrella down the sidewalk, right out of their hands. She could feel the little dots of water begin to tickle her face and she hummed. She was close enough to her car that if she really wanted to, she could get there before it started to really pour, but she found herself grounded as she watched the boy who’d lost his umbrella scramble towards it. It continued to give chase, and she gasped as she watched him drop the contents of his bag onto the ground.
He looked frantic and severely frightened. Was he afraid of storms? Without thinking, Raina ran towards him, her own froyo forgotten on the window sill of a neighboring shop as she ran towards him. “Are you okay?” She shouted after him. Why was he so scared? Raina let out a soft whine of protest in spite of herself and let the magic spark, electric and buzzing through her. The rain just over the boy frozen in time, a larger-platform like puddle above his head. It was small, but covered the frame of his shoulders at least. “Ya alright?” She said, making sure to focus on the magic so that it wouldn’t break. At least this was something she’d done plenty of times to know the extent of how far it’d go. It was simply collecting the water above him.
Alfie’s heart pounded in his chest and he was nearly frozen in fear. He could easily make it into one of the nearby shops — he had to — but the pain from his dampened shirt was so excruciating that it rendered him helpless. For a moment, he didn’t even register that someone had spoken to him. When his eyes fell on the girl, allowing the rain to freely fall down on her, Alfie’s first thought was that she would make fun of him. Clearly, she wasn’t affected by the storm at all.
“I-I’m fine,” he lied.
Wait… had she just asked if he was alright? Alfie already knew the answer to that since he’d found it in him to respond to her concern. He swallowed hard, oblivious to the sudden lack of rain pattering against his raincoat, before he shook his head.
“Actually, no, I… I’m not,” stammered Alfie. “I’m afrai— I hate rain.” Being afraid of storms was not unusual, but very few people shared his aversion to water altogether. Explaining it would be messy and potentially expose him to even more danger. “I can’t get my hair wet,” he lied again. It wasn’t entirely untrue; he couldn’t get any part of him wet.
As Alfie looked at her, something in his mind finally clicked. The sound of rain still surrounded them, but his view of the girl was completely unobstructed. Hesitantly, Alfie straightened up as he glanced around. While the rain continued to fall around him, not a single drop landed on him. Was he dead?! He outstretched his hand, palm up, before he looked in bewilderment.
“Uh… do you—?” Was she seeing this? Alfie’s eyes shot back to her as he pointed to the barrier above him. He recognized her from somewhere. Coffee. She’d served him coffee the other day. “You’re…” Alfie began before realizing he didn’t know her name. “Did you do that?” he asked instead.
Raina hadn’t quite discovered if doing magic in the middle of the street was a good thing, but for the most part, the streets seemed to be barren due to the sudden onslaught of rain. If people were looking at them from the inside, she was unaware. The closer she was now, Raina could practically spell out the fear that was written across his features. She felt bad. Guilty, even. She doubted it to be true, but it seemed wherever she went these days, it rained, and ferociously at that. It was probably a coincidence. But what she did know was that her magic did feel stronger when it poured.
“Rain ain’t for everyone, I understand.” She had almost thought he said I hate Raina, but that wouldn’t make any sense. He didn’t know who she was. Did he? She snapped out of her thoughts and blinked at him. The rain had stopped just overtop him, but it continued to pour down on top of herself.
She quickly looked up at his hair and nodded, “Well, I won’t let you get soaked or nothin’.” She looked around, eager to find any kind of canopy that they could wait out the storm under. It was a little farther along, but there was a giant overhang off of a shop she hadn’t yet been inside. Not that she would try to go inside. She was soaking wet. He seemed to put two and two together, his hand outstretched, only he pulled away with a dry palm. She wanted to smile at him, to show him that yes, she had done that, but she tried to focus on the magic above his head to prevent it from spilling onto him. That wouldn’t do him much good if he were afraid of the rain. “I did, and I know it’s weird, but I promise I ain’t gonna hurt you with it.”
Raina nodded towards the canopy a yard or so away. “We can go over there? That’ll be better, yeah?” She gave him a reassuring smile before taking a tentative step forward. She didn’t hate the rain, not by a long shot, but Raina was beginning to grow uncomfortable with the way it slid down the back of her shirt. She was ready to get out from under it, too. Too afraid to extend her barrier over top herself, she slowly began to walk in front of him. “Just follow me, alright? I ain’t gonna let it fall.”
Despite being surrounded by spellcasters nearly his entire life, the use of magic still managed to surprise Alfie. For the longest time, the Vurals were the only magic-users that he was aware of. Sure, he figured there must have been more, but he was recently coming into contact with more people that at the very least had an interest in the craft. It seemed so glaring to him now that it could only be some sort of sign from the universe. Or maybe not. He was probably overthinking it.
Alfie shot another cursory glance to the shroud above him. One wrong move and he would be royally fucked. Maybe this girl wouldn’t hurt him with it, but the implication that she could didn’t ease his mind. Whatever charm she was using to keep him out of the rain was a good enough indication that her magic could be fatal against him. It might not have been a true indication of how her magic manifested, but Alfie didn’t want to piss her off and find out.
“I appreciate it,” he shakily exhaled. Alfie’s eyes followed the direction of her nod and he offered a timid smile in response. He needed to trust her — he didn’t have any other choice at this point. “Yeah, it’s perfect,” he agreed. It didn’t take long for Alfie to fall in line behind her, wearily checking to make sure the makeshift umbrella was still covering him as he walked.
Soon enough, the shop canopy took its place and Alfie heaved a sigh of relief. “Thank you. Seriously, I— I can’t even begin to express my gratitude.” This complete stranger just saved his life and he couldn’t even tell her. At that moment, it didn’t even matter that the water soaking his shirt was causing him searing pain. Well… except that it absolutely mattered. He might still be alive, but that didn’t change the fact that water didn’t roll off of him like a duck’s back like it seemed to do for her.
Alfie reached behind his back and rolled the wet fabric up so it was no longer touching his skin. He was afraid to know the extent of his damage. As he looked back to his savior, he let out an airy breath. The water may not have affected her the same way it did him, but the same could not be said for her clothes. “You’re drenched — you realize that, right?” Stupid question; how could she not? “Does that not… bother you at all?”
Raina was careful to not let her magic falter. She’d done this tons of times. Only, those times had been done for herself. It wouldn’t be any different, right? Using it to help someone else? If anything, it only made her concentrate harder. She led the way to the canopy and once he was underneath it, she focused on shifting the water so that it didn’t go underneath him. The small barrier dissipated, falling like rain to accompany the rest of the drops that continued to splatter around them.
She stepped underneath the canopy and began to wring out her clothes. She looked over at him when he began to speak and she shook her head. “Nah, it looked like you were mighty uncomfortable and the last thing I’d wanna do is leave you in that state.” Of course, Raina was ignorant to the fact that she had practically saved his life.
She watched as he knotted the back of his shirt away from his skin. She blinked and looked back into his eyes and shrugged before she looked down at herself. She shifted her feet and her shoes let out a squeak in resistance. “‘S alright. It’s not the first time.” She’d been caught in the rain dozens of times. Sometimes she’d use her magic, sometimes she wouldn’t. Usually, she had an umbrella. Raina was careful not to stand too close to him as she began to shake out like a dog.
Suddenly, she recalled the days where she’d come rushing in from her mother’s garden. The rain would fall and her mother would force Raina to dance in it. They would, but after awhile they’d fall into the mudroom full of giggles and rouge cheeks. “I don’t mind it most of the time, nah.” She took a small step forward and looked up at the sky. “Doesn’t look like it’s gonna stop anytime soon.” Raina turned around to look where they’d taken refuge. “Looks like this place is closed, too.” She frowned. “No matter!” She reached inside of her messenger bag and pulled out a packet of tissues. “Ain’t much, but maybe it’ll get some of the water off?” She offered. “Or just leave ‘lil pieces of tissue on your face, but.” She shrugged. “Better than nothin!”
Uncomfortable was a serious understatement. Sitting in a chair without good lumbar support was uncomfortable. A Doritos shard wedged between teeth was uncomfortable. This? Rain? It was unbearable — even worse than that. At least it was in Alfie’s case.
In all of his years up until this point, Alfie had managed to avoid situations like this. He stayed home from school. He cancelled plans; cancelled dates when he still went on them. Yet somehow, despite his caution, he was still thoroughly unprepared. If he learned anything from this venture out, it was that he should be utilizing food delivery services much more often. He couldn’t imagine what it must be like to only be mildly inconvenienced by the rain, and he’d certainly never know the joys of splashing in puddles or frolicking during a light shower.
“Not the first time?” echoed Alfie, his brow raised, as if this were a foreign concept. “Can’t say the same, myself.” It probably wasn’t wise to overshare about his inexperience with the rain, but she already saw him at one of his lowest points and probably deduced as much.
Alfie grimaced at the stranger’s observation. That was just his luck, wasn’t it? First he was stuck at home without any food and now he was stranded on a downtown sidewalk, waiting for the storm to cease. His eyes followed her hands as she retrieved the tissues and offered them out to him. A small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth as he politely accepted with a soft “Thanks.” Fortunately enough, the hood of Alfie’s raincoat (as well as his quick thinking) spared him from taking any droplets of water to the face.
Taking the tissue was a formality. What he didn’t expect was to find that his face was damp with sweat. She must have mistaken his perspiration for precipitation. Gross. Embarrassed, Alfie balled up the used tissue and immediately stuffed it into his pocket. She’d been so kind to him — more than he probably deserved — and she didn’t even know his name.
“I’m Alfie, by the way,” he suddenly blurted. “Figured it’s only fair I introduced myself after you saved my life and all.” His lips pursed together into an almost apologetic smile. “I, uh… I wish there was some way I could repay you,” Alfie added. Here he was, receiving nothing but kindness with nothing to give her in return but his gratitude. No matter how much she wrung her clothes out, it didn’t change the fact that she’d jumped out into the storm to save his neck. He’d give her the shirt off his back if he could.
Suddenly, an idea occurred to him. “Actually— hang on,” Alfie said, shaking his raincoat off and letting it fall to the mostly-dry pavement. In one swift motion, he peeled his t-shirt off before reaching down for his jacket, slipping it back on to retain some form of decency. “Here,” he nodded, thrusting the shirt towards her. “It’s… mostly dry. Should help you towel down better than those tissues.”
Raina lifted her messenger bag off of her shoulder. She rubbed the spot it had been digging into and dropped it at her feet. Inside was a small sketchbook, a few pens and a charcoal pencil. Luckily the bag was an inexpensive one, as were the contents inside. She wanted to open and find out if her most recent works had been destroyed, but even if they had, she could always draw them over. It was a new sketchbook, barely used-- barely thought out structures on weighted paper.
“Alfie?” She sounded out the name on her tongue. “Nice to meet ya, m’name Raina.” She beamed at him, momentarily forgetting that her name could create an unintended joke. “Honest.” The witch nearly bent down to swipe her wallet from her bag, but she’d wait and see if he pestered her about whether or not she was being honest. “Wouldn’t be true savin’ if I expected somethin’ from you, would it?” She set her hands on her hips.
It’d only be a matter of time before the storm let up. She watched forlornly as her froyo tipped over, blown over by a sudden gust of wind. It rolled onto the sidewalk and continued to roll until it was so far that Raina could no longer see it. She had just inadvertently littered. Darn it, she thought.
Alfie’s sudden movements piqued Raina’s interest as she turned to look at him, but it wasn’t what she had expected. He was taking off his shirt-- Oh. Raina blinked at him and looked down at his outstretched hand. She took the shirt gratefully and averted her eyes as he pulled his jacket back on. She’d seen chests. It wasn’t anything not normal.
“Thank ya,” She reasoned with herself. She looked down at the shirt. It was dry for the most part, only dotted with a few raindrops. Raina held it up with a smile before she tried to figure out how to change it. Oh! Raina pulled the shirt over her already soaked one. She stuck her arms inside, the bigger shirt more forgiving than her own. She awkwardly stuck her arms through the holes and bunched it up towards her neck before she popped her arms back through and took off the shirt.
“When you go to the river ‘an fish, you learn creative ways for peelin off the smelly clothin.” She smiled at him and held up her own shirt as if a battle trophy. She rolled it into a ball and looked down at her messenger bag. Instead of putting it inside, she decided to tie it to the strap. “I appreciate it,” She said again with a genuine smile. “I’ll make sure to wash it ‘an get it back to you in no time.” Raina paused, “but I might need your number for that! Or if that ain’t comfortable for you, you can come by Coffee Plus weekdays except Thursday, and I can hold it for ya!” She smiled at him before realizing, “you’re not allergic to certain detergents, are you? I can’t use nothin’ by Gain for some reason.”
“Raina,” Alfie nodded, the irony of the situation not hitting him until she reiterated that she was telling the truth. A small laugh escaped him as his fingers fumbled over the buttons of his raincoat — he had to maintain some bit of decency after all. “That, uh… seems pretty fitting, all things considered.” Did it? Sure, he’d seen her magic firsthand, but that didn’t mean she was controlling the rain itself. Right? If that were the case, she should be able to stop it altogether.
Before Alfie could press the subject further for some peace of mind, Raina pulled his shirt over her own. He averted his gaze as she wriggled underneath the fabric and managed to remove her soiled top without much struggle. His brow raised at the mention of fishing. It was yet another activity on the ever growing list that Alfie would never be able to relate to. Part of him wondered what other seemingly normal things Raina did that further alienated him. Would she think he was weird if she knew?
"Don’t mention it,” Alfie sheepishly replied with a dismissive wave. “Really, it’s the least I could do after—” He cut himself off and pursed his lips. He’d already mentioned the fact that Raina saved his life. Driving it home any more than that would only rouse suspicion about how much truth his words held. Spellcaster or not, she obviously had some kind of power which probably meant she knew a thing or two about supernatural creatures; particularly ones that her powers affected. “After all that,” he stated simply.
Despite his reservations surrounding her abilities, Alfie couldn’t help the fact that he was rapidly growing endeared to this strange girl. A wide grin took the place of his previously meek smile. “I’m not that fussed about getting it back,” he admitted. The truth of the matter was that he had about a dozen just like it back at home. “But if it makes you feel any better, no; any detergent’s fine by me.” As he said this, Alfie reached into his back pocket and brandished his cellphone. A few taps later, he pulled up the new contact screen before handing the device to Raina. “Tell you what, you can text me and we’ll, uh… we’ll figure out something from there.”
The rain continued to fall and Raina began to wonder just how long the storm would last. If all else failed, she could escore him to where he needed to go, but there was no telling how long she could keep her magic up, and with him being so terrified of water, Raina didn’t want to chance letting it fall due to a distraction or inability to hold the water above his head. She patted down the shirt he’d lent her and looked at him with another smile, this one bigger than the last.
“Well, it don’t go unnoticed or unappreciated.” Raina nodded as if to reaffirm her statement. Her wet hair dribbled down the front of her new shirt and she awkwardly pulled it into her hands, leaning to the side to wring that out, too. Afterwards, she threw it up in a haphazard bun with the hair tie around her wrist. When Alfie confirmed that any detergent worked, she gave him a thumbs up. “Great, that’s great!” She could wash it and get it back to him that way he wouldn’t go missing something that belonged to him.
When Alfie offered her his phone, she lit up. She took the phone from him after wiping her damp hands off on the shirt he’d given her. She punched her name into his phone and added an umbrella under rain drops next to her name. “It seemed a lil fitting,” She laughed with ease. Raina leaned against the wall and hummed. “Sorry ‘bout your umbrella, too. I saw it fly away like it had its own legs!” She paused, “Or I guess wings, but yanno.” Raina laughed again. “I have a few extra, so when I give you your shirt back, maybe it’ll come with an umbrella care package.” She extended her arms out in front of her and stretched her fingers into the air. The buzzing against her skin from the onslaught of rain was hard to ignore. It reminded her of what she’d done for Alfie.
“Not that I mind savin’ you ‘an all, but…” She chewed the inside of her cheek. She figured if he were some kind of spellcaster, he would’ve revealed it by now. Maybe he was just human, or maybe he didn’t want to show her his cards. Maybe he was secretive for a reason. Raina shook the maybe’s literally from her head as she leaned to the side, hitting the water out of her ear. “If you could keep that b’tween us, I’d be mighty grateful.” She straightened up and smiled. “‘S just that I don’t want people knowin, you know? I mean, it’s fine that you know-- that’s totally fine, ‘cause you seem cool with it, but I don’t wanna have to go escortin’ people all over.” Her eyebrows furrowed, “not that I meant I minded escortin’ you, but do you know what I mean?” She touched her fingers to her chin. “Please don’t tell me I’m comin’ across as an ass?”
Alfie couldn’t help but laugh at the emoji that now accompanied Raina’s name in his phone. Instinctively, his hand darted up to cover his mouth as he sniggered. “It’s perfect,” he agreed, although the words were slightly muffled by his palm. With his phone back in his possession, Alfie quickly shot a text to the number she’d entered: a storm cloud emoji followed by a rainbow. He briefly wondered which emoji (if any) she would save next to his name and elected not to mention that she was the only person in his contacts saved this way. The thought made him feel guilty. Surely, some of his other friends would appreciate the gesture. It was just never anything that he’d considered before.
“Eh, it’s fine. It wouldn’t be the first time and I doubt it’ll be the last.” Alfie softly sighed as his gaze shifted back to the storm, blindly stuffing his phone back into the rear pocket of his jeans. It wasn’t the first time the wind swept up his unsuspecting umbrella by a long shot, but it was the first time such a gust was synchronous with a downpour. “You really don’t need to do that, though,” he assured. “Seriously, Raina. You’ve done more than enough to help me out as it is.”
The fact that Raina wanted to keep the little rescue mission a secret didn’t come as a surprise. Most witches didn’t go around showcasing their powers all willy-nilly — and for good reason. What did surprise Alfie was his response. “No, of course! You don’t sound like an ass at all. Trust me, I understand better than you’d think. Doing stuff like that is… well, it can be dangerous. Especially in a town like White Crest.” Alfie knew all about keeping a crucial part of his identity on the down-low. For years, he’d managed to evade giving that part of himself away. Sometimes it was almost impossible, but others… Well, his family had their techniques. Sharing even this much with Raina was dangerous enough. He’d need to tip-toe around it more carefully so as to not put himself at risk.
A subject change seemed to be in order. “You, uh… been doing that long?” Alright, well, that wasn’t exactly the shift Alfie hoped for. His mouth sputtered out the words before he actually had a chance to think them through. “Sorry, that’s way too personal, isn’t it? You don’t have to answer that.”
Raina could hear the buzz of her phone in her bag. Was it rude to grab it and save Alfie’s number? Or would it be rude if she didn’t with him standing right there? He knew where she worked, and she had said it proudly, so it wasn’t like she was going to ghost him. She hoped he knew that. Raina was happy to make friends all over White Crest. Some had come at unsuspecting moments, but she was grateful for them nonetheless. So Raina leaned down and grabbed her phone out of her bag. She saved Alfie’s number and attached a raindrop emoji next to it, before erasing that and adding an umbrella, like the one she’d put in his phone. She dropped her phone back into her bag. “Only doin’ what a person’d do if they saw someone in need, is all.”
When Alfie began to speak about how he understood, she felt her eyes widen. So maybe he knew a little about magic, or had been around it before, or maybe-- Raina reeled her thoughts in and simply put on a smile, this one a little less enthusiastic than the last, but still in the same wheelhouse. “Really appreciate that.” It took everything in Raina’s power to not ask him what he meant. It was clear that maybe he wanted to keep it as a secret, but she still wanted to know. What if he was like her, but too scared to admit it? Too scared that she might freak out? That didn’t make any sense, she thought. Not after what she’d done for him. She grappled with the idea of asking him the specifics about what he meant, but decided to push it out of the way. Maybe next time.
“Huh?” Raina blanked. “The water thing?” She thought for a moment. She could give Alfie her entire life story, but decided to shrug. “It’s been happenin’ for a while, yeah.” Maybe she’d tell him later to make him feel more comfortable-- No, was that manipulative? She cleared her throat. “I figured it out when I was about… six? I think.” She wondered if there were earlier inclinations that she had powers, like when she was a baby. Had she come out of the womb freezing things, or did the ability manifest over time? “But yeah, water ‘an I, we’re like--” She crossed her index and middle finger as if making a promise, “We’re like this.” She let out a laugh. “Sorta sounds dumb when I put it that way.” She could write essays on what her magic meant to her, as well as water, rain, the ocean-- any of it, but she felt it overbearing.
“It doesn’t sound dumb at all,” Alfie assured her with a thoughtful nod. For as long as he could remember, the phoenix had been surrounded by his own flames. There weren’t many stories about him setting the house on fire as an infant by sneezing, but he distinctly remembered combusting in his youth. Even if his siblings didn’t give him constant reminders (which they seemed to enjoy on a relatively frequent basis), that wasn’t something he could easily forget. He considered sharing this particular story with Raina. What would it hurt? It’s not like he would need to dive into the reality of why. Still, he owed it to himself — and his family — to keep the information private. He’d already broken the family oath by letting Eddie in on it. If anyone else knew, it was because they were deemed trustworthy by the rest of his family. Alfie simply wasn’t allowed to make those sort of decisions.
Alfie allowed the conversation to lull for a bit before elaborating. “I get the feeling. Not with water, obviously, but…” His lips pressed together before he let out a breathy chuckle. “Y’know. Something being so closely tied to who you are that it’s impossible to separate it from your identity.” For instance, the fact that his skin was sloughing off underneath his raincoat because he got it wet. Or that sometimes his hairline sprouted the beginning of vibrant, flame-colored plumage. It wasn’t all there was to him, but it was intrinsic to the existence of Alfonzo Ramirez.
“Sorry,” added Alfie. “I don’t mean to pry. Besides, it’s probably not the safest thing to talk about out in the open like this.” Even if they were the only ones around to hear. The sound of rain pitter-pattered around them, bouncing off the awning and onto the pavement, as Alfie looked on. “You’re pretty new around here, aren’t you? I mean, compared to most White Crest residents.” He didn’t actually know how long Raina had been living in the small town. “Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. There’s actually a lot of people here that I don’t know and I’ve been here for… forever.”
The rain continued to fall, big blotted drops of water now careening towards where they stood, funneling into a drain. Raina discreetly used her magic to keep the line forward, running towards the drain so that it wouldn’t pool at their feet.
I get the feeling. Raina wondered what he meant. She wanted to ask, but she decided she wouldn’t pressure him into revealing something that might be a better kept secret. Maybe it was better that way, she thought. It seemed like Alfie truly understood, and Raina felt a small twinge in her chest. She was glad that somebody could get it, and even though she didn’t know how he understood, she was grateful that she wasn’t being looked at as if she were crazy. Whoever, or whatever Alfie was, Raina knew she had found herself a friend in him.
“I’m new. Newer than the shine on my headlights at least.” She had just gotten them waxed. She looked out towards the shops that kept their doors closed. She looked towards Alfie, too. Maybe it was a good thing she’d gone to get froyo. If she hadn’t, she wouldn’t have been able to help him. “But I’m thinkin’ it’ll do me good to be here.” She smiled at Alfie and palmed the sides of her head in an attempt to flatten down the distinct curl that came with the rain.

A Well-Known Fact
Word Count: 8610
Warnings: Janus kinda freaks out when Roman gets mad, but... I think that’s about it? It’s sorta described as a panic attack so. Look out for that.
So, um, this was just an excuse to write Janus-centric fluff, umm.... enjoy?
———————————————————————————————————
A well-known fact about Janus: he is cold-blooded. Or, at least, he thought it was well-known. Remus has known for quite some time, and he couldn’t keep his mouth shut. And whenever Janus was around the others in the Mindscape, he was always somewhere warm, be it under a blanket, by a fire, or near warmed up electronics.
He hadn’t considered that even the most observant of them would fail to observe this.
So now, here he was, trying to figure out how to explain it while Patton kept grabbing his hands, trying to warm them up.
“It really isn't a big deal, Patton. This is just the way I function.”
Patton frowned.
“Sorry kiddo, but no. Virgil runs cold, and he’s warmer than you. Have you been in the Imagination? Are you feeling okay?”
Janus sighed as Patton led him to the couch and threw a blanket over him.
“Yes, I have, and yes, I’m feeling fine. I’m not joking, this is literally how I function.”
Patton huffed.
“You are aware I’m cold-blooded, right?” Janus waved away the hot cocoa the other had made.
“I- what? What do you mean?”
Janus really didn’t want to have to explain this. In all honesty, it was a little embarrassing. He could handle the frightened glances at his scales and his eye, and his forked tongue and his lisp. They were part of his snakelike appearance, and he could easily shapeshift them away if he wanted to.
But his cold-bloodedness? That was something that he couldn’t change, that proved he was inhuman.
And of course it had to be Patton Dad Popstar Morality Sanders that he was explaining it to. He had nothing against Patton, however he was aware of the moral side’s squeamishness. Not only was he morality, but he was also Thomas’ emotions. And Janus was almost certain that the side that had screamed at cartoon spiders would find his inhumanity disturbing, or at the very least frightening.
“I don’t function the same as you, and the others. My body can’t regulate my temperature. I was in the Imagination today, and Roman and Remus tend to keep it cold and rainy during fall, so it makes sense that I’d be a little colder than usual.”
Patton didn’t seem frightened, just… startled.
“How does that work? We’re not real. Well, of course we’re real but… we don’t have like… physical bodies? So how do you get all cold n’ stuff?”
Janus shrugged.
“I don’t know. Just happens. I’ve gotten used to it after all these years. As long as I go under my heat lamp for a while every day during the fall and winter, I’m fine.”
Patron huffed.
“Well, that’s no good! You can’t be locked up in your room all the time just ‘cause you’re chilly!” Patton threw another throw blanket over him.
“When Roman gets back I’ll ask him to put a lamp in here, if that’s okay.” He smiled widely.
“Uh- yeah, um that’s-that’s fine.” Janus accepted the cocoa and snuggled into the blankets.
That had gone… well. Too well. Was he just pretending? Patton didn’t like lying, he knew that, but he’d seen him repress several times, so hiding discomfort was a strength of his.
Janus eyed him warily.
“You’re not… upset?”
Patton’s eyes widened.
“Oh, Jam, did you not tell me ‘cause you thought I’d be weird about it? Of course I’m not upset! When Virgil started hanging out with us we had to make a few adjustments to make him more comfy, and we’re more than willing to do the same for you!” Patton gripped one of Janus’ hands in his own, rubbing the back with his thumb.
“Oh. Uh, thanks.”
Patton grinned.
“Of course, kiddo! I was gonna make some cookies, do you wanna help decorate them once you’ve warmed up some?”
Janus felt a ‘no’ at the tip of his tongue, but then Patton looked up at him with his signature puppy eyes, and Janus couldn’t have said no if he’d tried.
“Yes, I’d love that.”
Patton squealed.
“Alrighty! I’ll go get them started then! Lemme know if you need anything!” He bounced up from the couch, planting a kiss on Janus’ head before skipping into the kitchen.
The next person he told was Roman. He’d been expecting it, as a request for a heat lamp would probably seem pretty odd.
Roman had come into the commons while Janus had been basking. Which, in all honesty, just meant he was lying under the heat lamp and playing on his phone while Patton cooked dinner. The prince had walked right over, sat beside him, and stayed there for a few minutes.
“Okay, I don’t get it.”
Janus rolled his eyes.
“Don’t get what?”
“Why you wanted this put in? It’s not really that great. Actually, it’s a little uncomfortable.” Roman moved to sit on the couch.
“What does it matter to you?” Janus hissed.
God damnit Patton was looking at him all disappointedly.
“Kiddo..”
Ughhhh not with that voice, he can’t do that, that’s unfair.
“Imcldbldd”
“What?”
“I’m cold blooded.”
Roman froze for a second.
“What the fuck, Jan?”
Patton kept a close eye on the two, sending a worried glance in Janus’ direction.
“It’s totally my fault, I obviously chose to be Deceit.”
“No, fuck, not like… I meant that I’ve literally dragged you into the cold, rainy imagination for adventures and you didn’t fucking say anything?” Roman looked furious.
Janus’ eyes widened. That’s what he was upset about? Not the fact that Janus, a master of deception and an embodiment of lies was literally cold blooded, but the fact that he’d never complained about it?
“Oh, please do act like you wouldn’t have flipped out if I’d told you before all of… this.”
Janus curled in on himself a little more.
“Before the Melding? Yeah. But it’s been cold out for weeks. And you’ve been into the Imagination like… every few days, and that’s just with me! I have no clue how many times Remus has dragged you out there!” Roman was back beside Janus again, and holy shit was he angry, he’s angry, hurt, he might hurt you-
Patton.
“Hey, Roman, kiddo, can you come help me over here?” Janus mimicked Patton’s voice, and placed in just right so it would bounce off the walls correctly.
Roman got up, his eyes still filled with fire.
“We are not done talking about this. As soon as I’m done helping him, I’m coming right back here.”
Janus took the chance to sink into his room and lock the door. Now that he’d slowed down, thought it through a bit, he regretted it. But… he was self-preservation. As good as Virgil was at keeping Thomas out of dangerous situations, Janus would always have a little bit of that fight or flight response built into him. He didn’t cause it, but, clearly, he responded to it, whether he liked it or not.
Knocking, now there was knocking at the door. He took a deep breath. Roman wouldn’t hurt him. He was safe around Roman.
He opened the door, and Roman pushed past him, sitting on his bed. Janus slowly moved to sit across from him.
“Okay, one, was there any particular reason you rushed out?” Roman looked concerned, now, but still so mad.
“You just… scared me.” Ugh, what was he doing?
It had been a rhetorical question, this was stupid. He was supposed to keep feelings like these ones hidden. It was what he’d decided on ages ago. What was he doing?
“I.. okay, one sec. No. I am not mad at you for being cold blooded. I am upset that you didn’t tell me before I brought you into situations that could’ve hurt you.” Roman set his hands on Janus’s arms, lightly rubbing them with his thumbs.
“It’s not life-threatening. Nor is it threatening at all. I just get a little… uncomfortable.”
Roman looked crestfallen.
“Jan, you of all sides should know that your safety and comfort is, and always will be more important than whatever adventure I go on, or whatever story I tell. I need you to tell me if something could put your health, physical or mental, at risk, okay?”
Janus felt like he was going to cry. Which was strange, as he hadn’t cried since they were little. He nodded softly, the lump in his throat stopping any words he might have said.
“C’mere,” Roman pulled him into a hug.
He squeezed tightly before pulling back, wiping a tear from Janus’ face.
“Roman, Janus! Dinner’s ready!” Patton called.
Roman lifted an eyebrow at Janus, to which he let out a small laugh and shook his head. Roman grinned, then stood up and offered Janus his hand.
“Thank you.” The words were thick and dripping with way more meaning than was required for a hand up, but, well…
It looked like Roman understood.
Next was Logan.
Logan had approached him and asked if it would be okay if he asked Janus a few questions. As much as Janus didn’t want the others dabbling in his business, Logan had seemed so excited, which was a rare occurrence as of lately. So he let himself be lead into Logan’s room, sitting on his bed as Logan took a seat at his desk.
“So, it has come to my attention that you are ectothermic?”
“I’m sorry, what?”
“I believe Roman used the term cold-blooded?” Logan grabbed a lemon yellow notebook from a drawer, along with a pen.
“Mm. Yes, that I am.”
Logan flipped the book open and began writing.
“Fascinating! It had not occurred to me that this was even possible, what with us being projections of light while being on the physical realm. Does it affect you while in the physical realm and the mental realm?” Logan’s eyes sparkled.
“Yes, and it carries over between the realms.” Janus supposed he should feel like Logan was invading but… something about Logan’s analytic speech patterns made it seem less invasive.
“Mm… and I believe Roman also mentioned the Imagination affecting you more than our rooms and commons?”
“No, it’s not that the Imagination affects me more, it’s that right now the twins have made a point of keeping the Imagination cold for fall.” Janus couldn’t help it if his voice turned a little bit exasperated.
“Ah, yes, that would make much more sense. Have you any idea why you’re ectothermic?” Logan continued carefully writing in his notebook.
“Remus said at one point it might be due to my animal being a snake, but I don’t think that’s it. The scales and tongue are simply my appearance.” Janus fidgeted with his gloves.
“So you cannot shapeshift it away?”
“Mm, no. I must say it is incredibly irritating impersonating you, or Patton for that matter. Your short sleeves are horribly uncomfortable.” He smirked, moving so he was sitting criss cross on the bed.
“Well, it is incredibly irritating being impersonated, so perhaps it makes up for itself.” Logan glared at Janus for a moment, and he returned it.
Janus started softly laughing.
“Don’t laugh over my intimidating glare, it makes it seem insincere.” Logan’s voice kept an edge, but his eyes were smiling.
“Of course, Oppy, I would never even think of it.” Janus purred.
“Oppy? As in, the Opportunity rover?” Logan raised an eyebrow at Janus.
“Yes, I heard you had quite an attachment to her.” Janus smiled.
“I- um, yes, I suppose I did enjoy gathering information on the rover. The team that worked on her-it- had some interesting experiences during its mission. It supposedly lasted 50 times longer than they expected it to, and-“ Logan paused.
“I apologize, that was not your reason for being here. I will refrain from… rambling.”
Janus frowned a little.
“I wouldn’t mind veering off topic. Besides, it’s not like I’ve got anything else to do.”
Logan paused, his face blank, as if he was rebooting.
“I… okay. May I ask another question?” Logan tapped his pen against his notebook.
Janus gestured for him to continue.
“While I do enjoy the topic of the Mars rovers, I am a little confused as to what resemblance you see between them and myself.”
Janus smiled.
“Well, for one thing, robots are your thing. I may not have been present during Thomas’ puppet fiasco, but I did catch wind that you changed your appearance to match a robot rather than a puppet.”
“Oh, it was a puppet. I had not had enough time to plan and create a robotic body for myself, so it was merely a puppet shaped like a robot.”
“Yes, yes, of course. But besides that, you do remind me of those excitable lab robots who are simultaneously amazingly intelligent, kind, and assholes.”
That startled a laugh out of Logan, to which Janus held back a grin.
“Ah, thank you, I’ll make sure to write that down.” Logan bit back a smile, closing his notebook and placing his pen in its holder.
“If you… wanted to, I would not object to learning more about the Mars rovers.” Janus coaxed Logan a little, smiling when he saw his eyes light up.
“Oh! Yes, of course! The Mars rovers, affectionately nicknamed the “Adventure twins,” Spirit and Opportunity, landed on Mars on January 3rd and 24th, 2004 on a 90-day long mission, but they both lived well beyond that time. Opportunity, specifically, spent 15 years on Mars, collecting data that has proved that Mars could have sustained microbial life.” Logan tapped his hands on his legs as he spoke.
Janus asked questions every now and again, and Logan answered with a small smile and a light in his eyes. It was great to see Logan ramble without caution, much like when they were kids.
When Logan had finished, he seemed to be in an even better mood than before. His hands continued tapping, and Janus could see him fighting back a smile.
“While I have you here, Janus,” Logan glanced to the side for a moment, then nodded his head and continued, “Patton and Roman wanted me to ask you if you would accompany us at “family movie night” this Friday. Do not feel inclined to participate, I understand if it would be too much, as you are not one for social events, but if you would like to come, the invitation is there.” He bit his lip gently as he ended, glancing up at Janus.
“While I would love to, I’m not sure everyone would be as comfortable as they would prefer to be if I were there.” Janus’ tone held a pinch of remorse.
“If you are referring to Virgil, we talked to him beforehand and he stated that he would not be opposed to you joining us.” Logan seemed to be bargaining in some small way.
Janus nearly laughed.
“I’ll consider it, then.” He stood up and smiled at Logan and watched as the teacher startled, turning away a bit.
“Yes, that is… satisfactory.”
“And Logan, do-“ Janus’ voice abruptly cut out.
“Janus? Are you alright?” Logan leapt to his feet, placing a hand on Janus’ arm.
“Ye-“ It didn’t hurt, oddly enough.
He just couldn’t speak? Realization flooded Logan’s eyes, and he led Janus out of his room and into the commons, sitting them down on the couch.
“Are you alright now? It seems my room began to cut off your… backwards speaking. As well as lying.” Logan kept his hands on Janus’ elbows.
“I’m fine.” Janus smirked as Logan’s eyes narrowed.
“Communicate a falsehood, please.”
“My my Logan, whatever has drawn you to the dark side?” Logan rolled his eyes affectionately at Janus’ teasing.
“Janus.”
“Fine. Mmm… You enjoy nearly all jelly brands, other than Crofter’s.” Logan levelled him with a glare, causing Janus to cackle.
“Why must you hurt me like this?” Logan asked, his face completely devoid of emotion.
Janus' laugh rang loud and clear, and Logan grinned, for just a moment. He let his hands move to Janus’, squeezing them gently.
“You must be more careful in the future; spending too long in my room could permanently alter your function.”
Janus lifted Logan’s hands to his mouth, kissing them gently.
“Don’t worry your pretty head about it, sweet Logic. I’m fine.”
Logan went pink, breaking eye contact with Janus.
“Well, caution will do no harm to anyone. Please tell me if you begin feeling different while in my room, okay? You would do the same in Patton or Virgil’s, would you not?”
“Of course. I’ll tell you in the future, promise.” Janus rubbed his thumbs over Logan’s hands.
Logan threw him one last glance, then sighed and nodded. He pulled his hands away, adjusting his glasses.
“I should return to my work. Thomas has a brainstorming session with Joan soon that I must prepare for.” Logan stood up, adjusting his tie.
“Have you bored of my company?” Janus smirked.
“Oh, shush,” Logan smiled back, pressing a soft kiss to Janus’ cheek. “I’ll see you at dinner tonight.”
Janus let out some sort of squeak which Logan seemed to take as affirmation, as he returned to his room.
He should probably have felt a little irritated that Logan would do that and then run off but… when he blushed pretty like that? Janus couldn’t find it in himself to care.
Virgil had already known. Janus had told him long before the Melding, way back when Virgil had still ID’d as a “Dark Side.” He’d actually been the first person Janus had told.
They’d been about twelve, when Virgil had only been around for a short while. He’d walked into Janus’ room during one of Janus’ cold spells, when he’d had several blankets piled on him, and was shaking like a jackhammer.
Virgil had run in, asking what was wrong. Janus had, begrudgingly, explained what had happened, and Virgil had gone quiet. He’d lifted the blankets, sitting beside Janus and cuddling him as he warmed up. He’d been the one to suggest the heat lamp, and Janus would forever be in his debt for it.
Now, Janus sat on the floor with a heavy blanket draped over him as they watched Hercules. The four lovebirds were cuddling on the couch, Roman loudly belting out I Will Go the Distance. Patton was giggling, singing along to the parts he knew as Logan and Virgil watched on with endearment.
Janus couldn’t help but feel like a fifth wheel. Remus had decided not to join them that night, so Janus felt a bit invasive. Virgil continuously glanced over at him, as if ensuring that Janus wouldn’t ruin anything. The others also kept looking over to Janus, though it was decidedly for different reasons.
Patton seemed nervous, and Roman was trying to convince Janus to sing with him. Logan just seemed fond.
Janus tried his best to keep his attention on the movie, but it was hard when he continuously caught them looking at him out of the corner of his eye. At one point, Patton had gotten up to refill their popcorn, and had run a hand through Janus’ hair as he passed. Janus tried not to lean into it too obviously, but he’d practically purred at the gesture.
Virgil had glanced over to him, and Janus had caught his eye. He… he didn’t seem mad, or even upset. Just… nervous. It was the same way he looked before Thomas performed, or asked a cute boy out.
Janus and Virgil had at least been on talking terms for a while, so… what was that about?
The movie finished, and they voted on the next movie. Roman tried to rig the vote for Moana, but Janus immediately caught it and reversed the rig so it would favour Big Hero 6, Logan’s requested movie. Roman picked the paper from Janus’ hat and gawked as Janus snickered to himself on the floor. Virgil and Logan helped Roman move on from his mourning as Patton giggled and raised an eyebrow at Janus.
Janus shrugged, his signature gesture for “Yeah, I fucked with it, what can ya do?”
About halfway through the movie, Janus began to grow cold. As he noticed his shivering, he placed a gentle mirage over himself so the others wouldn’t notice. It wasn’t to the point where he was in any danger, barely any discomfort, and the movie would be over soon, so he could just leave his heat lamp on as he slept. Virgil frowned at him, and Janus froze.
There was no way he could see through the mirage. Janus had been very careful while placing it. Virgil, especially, shouldn’t have noticed it. As anxiety, mirages worked quite well on him.
“Hey. You’re cold. Come here.” Virgil spoke softly, but sternly.
Janus huffed.
“I’m fine. I simply forgot to bask earlier. I’ll survive until the movie’s done, I assure you.” Janus hugged his blanket a little closer.
“Don’t care. C’mere.”
Janus warily eyed Virgil, who moved over on the couch to make room for Janus between himself and Patton. He carefully made his way over, sitting down between the two of them and doing his best not to touch either of them too much. His efforts were immediately negated, as Patton cuddled up next to him as soon as he sat down.
He had to admit, it was very nice to be cuddling someone again. Especially Patton, who ran the warmest out of all of them.
Virgil also leaned into him, resting his head on Janus’ shoulder and turning his attention back to the movie. Janus slowly felt himself warming up as he grew more comfortable in the cuddle pile. Roman leaned over and took one of his hands, rubbing it with his thumb.
Janus felt like he was about to melt. Not literally, of course. He was quite comfortable in his position. No, he was going to melt as in there were so many warm, fuzzy feelings welled up inside him that he was sure they would start oozing out of him if he weren’t careful.
Virgil’s hands slipped around Janus’ waist, pulling him somehow even closer. Roman sighed happily as Virgil began softly purring, his eyes closed. The movie was nearly forgotten by all except Logan, who was completely fixated on it, muttering to himself quietly.
“What’re you thinking, Specs?”
Logan blinked, turning to Roman as he processed the question.
“My apologies, I didn't mean to interrupt the movie.”
“Mm, nope. No apologizing. What’s up?” Virgil blinked open an eye, glancing at Logan.
“I was merely wondering the logistics of the microbots in this movie. We have already achieved a high level of synchronization with drones, so creating a smaller version of said drones would not be incredibly difficult.
“The only problem I could see with them is the almost telepathic connection to them, though we have nearly created a program that can process and recreate images from the brain. So these bots are almost achievable right now.”
Roman whistled.
“Damn, wouldn’t that be cool? I mean there’s obviously the whole construction use, but imagine the special effects!” Roman grinned at Logan.
“I suppose that would be an adequate use for them. I imagine waves and particle effects would be much more easy to create with the bots.”
The two began bouncing ideas off of each other, debating the uses of microbots as Janus, Virgil and Patton watched on with fondness.
Virgil sighed happily. Janus fought the urge to kiss his forehead, and, wow, that’s back, that’s not good.
He must have looked sad, because Patton hugged him tighter and nuzzled his arm. Janus gave him a small, reassuring smile. Patton’s face turned stern, in a “we’re talking about this later” way. Janus wasn’t sure whether or not he should be worried.
Virgil’s breathing began to slow beside Janus, his face relaxing as he began softly purring again. Janus ran a hand through Virgil’s hair, laughing softly as he smiled in his sleep. Patton sighed happily, kissing Janus’ cheek before resting his head on Janus’ shoulder.
Roman caught Janus’ eye, and grinned.
“Aw, looks like you’ve hypnotized our dearest Emo and Pops.”
Janus smiled.
“Can’t say I’m upset.” He purred, continuing to play with Virgil’s hair.
Roman’s teasing smirk turned soft, and Logan wrapped his arms around Roman’s waist, sinking into him. Logan glanced up, and tiredly smiled up at Janus. Roman kissed Logan’s forehead, then reached for Janus’ hand and kissed it.
Janus felt a soft blush warming his face, and turned away slightly as Roman adjusted his hold on Janus’ hand, entwining their fingers.
“You wanna help me get them to bed?”
Logan frowned.
“I could’ve helped.”
Roman chuckled.
“I know, love, but you’re already half asleep yourself.”
“I am not. I’m completely awake.”
“Mhm, tell that to your eyelids.”
Logan huffed, then gently punched Roman’s shoulder and stood up.
“Asshat.”
Roman laughed.
“I’m serious. No kisses for you tonight.” Logan walked past Roman, over to Janus, and kissed his head.
“Babeee.” Roman reached out to Logan as he whined.
“Nope. Goodnight.” Logan smiled and went upstairs.
Janus chuckled as Roman pouted after him. Roman sighed.
“I’ll take Patton if you take Vee?”
Janus bit the inside of his cheek. If Virgil woke up, he’d probably be upset, but… he looked completely knocked out. And it would only take a minute, so…
“Sure.”
Roman stood, then lifted Patton off of Janus and into his arms.
“Night, Jan.”
“Night.”
Roman carried Patton upstairs. Janus sighed, then shifted Virgil off him gently so he could stand up. He picked up Virgil and began making his way to Virgil’s room. He was still surprised by how light Virgil was- Vee had always joked about it being because of his correlation with spiders, saying he didn’t have an endoskeleton. Well, he was pretty sure Virgil had been joking. Maybe he could ask Logan about it.
Janus arrived at Virgil’s door, which had luckily been left open, and slipped into the room, laying Virgil on his bed gently. He found Virgil’s make-up wipes and wiped off the eyeshadow that remained beneath his eyes, then stood to leave. Again, the urge to kiss Virgil’s forehead arose, and he indulged it this time, before turning to leave.
“Jan?”
Janus froze, and turned around to find Virgil staring up at him, his eyes alert and very awake. A chorus of ‘fuck’s ran through his head.
“Yeah?”
Virgil stayed silent for a moment, then spoke up, “Can you stay?”
Well, that wasn’t the response he’d been expecting. Maybe a “what the fuck,” or a “get out,” or perhaps even a “why.” But definitely not this.
Janus choked out a “yeah,” and walked back over to the bed. Virgil held the covers up for him, and he crawled under. Virgil cuddled up to his chest as Janus hesitantly laid his arm over Virgil’s waist.
“Why-“
“Shhhhh… in the morning, okay?” Virgil cut him off.
Janus swallowed nervously, but nodded. Virgil sighed and pulled Janus closer, his breathing steadying more with second. Eventually, soft snores came from his sleeping form. Janus rested his cheek against Virgil’s hair, and let out a breath.
He and Virgil hadn’t cuddled this much since… well before the Melding. It felt a little strange but… mostly it just felt safe. Like a warm cup of cocoa after a long day in the snow, or curling up in your favourite blanket after a hard day at work.
Janus let himself savour the moment, and silently prayed for whatever god was up there to let him fall asleep.
…
Well that’s a no.
Janus rolled his eyes. Of all nights, it had to be this one, huh?
Virgil twitched in his sleep, and Janus bit his lip. He knew Virgil was prone to nightmares, being Anxiety and all, but it didn’t mean he had to like it. He wondered if he would still…?
Janus moved his hand up to softly pet Virgil’s hair, and he seemed to calm down. Janus laughed quietly as Virgil resumed his purring.
Janus eventually noticed the gloves that still covered his hands, and groaned. That’s why he couldn’t sleep. Awful. He removed them, careful not to disturb Virgil, and placed them behind him on the nightstand. He continued playing with Virgil’s hair, until his eyelids grew heavy and his hands stopped moving. As the safety of sleep washed over him, he couldn’t remember being this happy in a long time.
“Virg- oh my goodness. Oh my goodness, Roman, you have to see this!”
“What’s wrong, Pa- oh my god. That’s adorable.”
“I know, right?! Do you think they’d be upset if I took a picture?”
“They might. Virgil doesn’t like photos without his eyeshadow on.”
“Yeah, you’re probably right. Aww Logan woulda loved seeing this though!”
“Heh, Specs would’ve gone so soft seeing this.”
Janus’ eyes slowly blinked open, the soft sunlight coming from the window flooding his vision.
“Oh shit they’re awake-“
“Language!”
“Go go go abort mission!”
The door slammed shut as Janus turned around, giggles ringing out from behind it. Even in his morning bleariness, Janus couldn’t help but find it endearing.
“Wha…?” Janus turned back around to see Virgil sitting up halfway, leaning on his elbow.
A knot twisted itself in Janus’ stomach, and his hands began shaking.
“Oh. Mornin.” Virgil mumbled, falling back onto the bed.
“Good morning.” Janus replied, sitting up.
He slipped his gloves back on, and began getting out of bed. Virgil reached over and grabbed his wrist before he was able to.
“Jan, what’s-“ He looked up at Janus, his eyes widening. “Fuck, you gotta get out of here.” Virgil suddenly sunk out, dragging Janus with him.
When he opened his eyes again, Janus was sitting on the couch in the commons. The scenario felt scarily familiar.
“Oh, I just love doing that immediately after waking up. It doesn’t feel weird at all.” Janus hissed.
“Dude, you had eyeshadow down to your nose. You’re welcome.” Virgil threw his hood up, then sank into the couch cushions.
Janus bit his lip.
“Thank you, I suppose.”
“Yeah, whatever.”
Janus played with the hem of his gloves. They really should talk. Didn’t mean Janus had to initiate it. Even though he did. Because Virgil would be nervous about it, and they’d just continue skirting around everything.
“We should talk.” The words felt alien in Janus’ mouth.
Virgil groaned.
“Do we have to? I, like, just woke up, man.”
“You asked to talk about it in the morning.”
“It was like 2AM dude, you can't hold me at that.”
“I absolutely can and will.”
Patton and Roman appeared at the top of the stairs, giggling to themselves. They glanced down and saw Janus and Virgil on the couch, and got quiet. Patton met Janus’ eye and gave him a reassuring smile, before gently pulling Roman back upstairs.
“Let’s...o...ake...gan.” Was all Janus could make out.
Virgil groaned.
“What, did you get my boyfriends in on this too?”
Janus scoffed.
“Like I would use your boyfriends against you.”
“Oh, you absolutely would. Though you’ve been starting to use yourself against me too.”
“Oh, Virgil, who knew you could be so forward?” Janus smirked as Virgil shoved him.
“Like you haven’t been flirting with my boyfriends for the past three months.”
Janus bit his lip.
“Is that alright?”
Virgil finally looked over to him, his eyes wide.
“Uh, yeah, of course.”
Janus frowned.
“You sound like that should be obvious.”
Virgil stared at him, then started laughing. Janus fought down a smile.
“What?”
“Dude, seriously? Oh my god, I don’t know how to tell you this, but if I’m inviting you to cuddle with me and my boyfriends, I’m obviously fine with you flirting with us.” Virgil grinned.
Janus lifted an eyebrow.
“Oh? Us?”
Virgil turned red, and pulled on his hoodie strings a little.
“Nope. I’ll talk about whatever you want, but I am not dealing with that this early.” Virgil mumbled.
“Fine. But you do want to talk?”
Virgil bit his lip, and pulled his hoodie sleeves up.
“I mean, whatever. I don’t really care. But Patton wants me to talk to you and you said you wanted to talk so… whatever. You have to go first though.”
Janus nodded, and brought his legs up to sit cross-legged on the couch.
“Okay. We both know that we both suck at this, so laugh if you please, but know that I then will not hesitate to do the same.” Janus figured that was a good way to start.
It had gotten a small laugh out of Virgil, so it should be fine.
“I… acknowledge that the way I behaved, both prior to the Melding and for a short while after was unacceptable. I know I hurt you a lot, especially when we were young, and I apologize for that.” He paused for a moment.
This all felt so staged. Like he’d stolen it from some story and recited it. Saying it out loud made him feel the same way Patton felt when lying. Like a hurricane had replaced his stomach and the rest of his organs had to deal with the consequences.
“I know I may not be able to remedy it, but I would like to try. I’m working on being more honest and vulnerable, and I would really appreciate it if I had you helping me out with it.” Everything he’d ever known about speaking to people had apparently left his brain.
He wasn’t making eye contact, why the fuck wasn’t he making eye contact? His words were blunt and inelegant.
He finally brought himself to look up at Virgil again.
“Yeah, I mean… thanks, I guess. And uh… I’m… sorry, for kinda being a dick to you after you introduced yourself to Thomas. I know how weird and scary that is so… yeah.”
Janus huffed.
“It was well within your rights to, I wasn’t exactly the nicest either.” His hands gestured as he spoke.
“Yeah, but I did kinda egg the others on too.”
“Ehh, we’re all petty bitches sometimes. I get it.” That startled a sharp laugh out of Virgil, and Janus smiled.
“I’m glad to finally have another petty bitch around to help me out when Roman steals my eyeshadow.”
“Who says I won’t be helping him steal your eyeshadow? Honestly, sounds like fun.” Janus grinned as Virgil punched his arm.
“Asshat.”
“Your asshat.”
Virgil’s smile turned a little softer.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever.”
He stood, then reached to help Janus up.
“Come help me give my boyfriend shit for eavesdropping.” Virgil grinned.
Janus heard a quiet “fUCK-“ come from the top of the staircase, followed by pounding footsteps. He smirked, grabbing Virgil’s arm.
“Gladly.”
They hadn’t spoken about everything, they hadn’t spoken much at all, but they didn’t need to, not right now. It was a healing process. The fact that there was now a reaching branch, a bridge built over their last one, was enough for now. They’d work through it bit by bit, and eventually they’d get there. Until then, Janus was happy to accept this new, but familiar friendship. And as he listened to Virgil and Roman teasing each other, he knew he’d be more than happy with it.
This had to be a dream, of some sorts. This couldn’t be real. Maybe Remus was playing a trick on him, or maybe he’d tricked himself, or something. But he definitely wasn’t in reality.
In the morning, after breakfast, Roman had asked him to come into the Imagination with him for a little while. There had been this beautiful little green clearing among the fall-covered trees, and when he stepped into it, it was as warm as a spring day. They’d sat on one of the rocks, and talked about Thomas’ most recent musical obsession. Roman had, at some point, turned on the soundtrack and convinced Janus to perform some of the duets with him.
Then Patton had requested his help with decorations for their upcoming Christmas celebration (upcoming, as in, in about a month), and Janus had helped with that for a while. Patton put on his favourite Christmas music, and they’d started doing some weird kind of swing dance in the empty family room. Patton had asked for his assistance in hanging mistletoe over the couch, and given him a peck on the cheek before dancing away.
Logan had popped in, and asked if Janus could help him with a schedule. They’d gone to Logan’s room, and Logan had run the schedule by Janus, thanking him when he pointed out any errors or impractical time usage. They’d ended up talking about the new year, how illogical and silly their traditions were. Logan had grumbled something about New Year’s resolutions, then begrudgingly showed Janus a memory of Thomas, him, Roman, Virgil, and Patton singing a silly song regarding them. Janus helped him plan some reasonable, yet still exciting resolutions in advance.
Virgil had knocked on the door, and asked to borrow him. He’d been planning presents for the other sides but wasn’t sure about them yet. Janus helped him sift through ideas, and gave him the little push needed to actually make the gifts. Virgil sat on his lap as he started making the most elaborate one (Roman’s), and Janus hooked his arms around Virgil’s torso so he could see to help Virgil with the details.
So, all in all, a wonderful day.
Now, Janus sat on the family room floor, with Virgil’s head in his lap and Roman leaning against his shoulder, with the coffee table moved up against the wall. Patton was sitting on the couch behind him, putting little braids in his hair, and Logan was curled up against Patton. Something was on the TV, but Janus wasn’t really paying attention. He, honestly, couldn’t remember being this happy his entire life.
And then Patton asked if it was okay if they talked about something.
Janus felt a sinking feeling in his stomach. Surely, they weren’t upset with him, right? He couldn’t think of anything he could have done, at least recently, to upset them. Did they just… not want him around anymore? He’d been expecting it, at first, but he’d thought things had been going pretty well…
“What about?”
Patton gently nudged Logan, and the two moved to sit on the floor in front of Janus.
“So, Jan, we all know that the temperature has really fallen recently, and Christmas is coming up soon too…” Patton seemed to be fighting down a smile, like he’d heard the best joke and wanted to tell it to them.
Okay, so not anything to do with right now, but with Christmas. Maybe they needed his help with something? That seemed reasonable.
Virgil sat up, then walked over to the coffee table, grabbing a wrapped box from the shelf on the underside.
“We, uh, made a gift for you, but, we figured you’d like it before it got too cold out.” He sat down next to Janus, cross-legged, and passed him the gift.
Janus frowned, but began unwrapping it. Patton looked like he was about to burst with joy, and even Logan seemed cautiously excited.
He unwrapped it, setting the wrapping paper to the side, and found… A blanket?
“It’s a heated blanket,” Logan spoke up, “You can charge its battery, and it has a built-in heating pad. We figured you’d find it useful.”
Janus blinked, staring at the box.
“It also has lavender pouches in it, because Vee said you sometimes have trouble sleeping, and I figured it might help.” Roman looked up from his shoulder, smiling.
“So… do you like it?” Patton asked.
Janus remained quiet for another moment, as Patton’s grin slowly fell.
“I… this is… amazing.” Janus muttered.
“Are you sure? If you don’t like it, we can always get you something else, and-“
“Patton,” Janus interrupted, “I love it. Seriously. Thank you all, so much.”
Patton’s grin returned, and Virgil let out a sigh of relief from beside him.
“Hey, hey Jam, now, if you wanna, it’ll be easier for you to come into the Imagination!” Roman grinned, and Janus let out a happy laugh.
“Of course, I’d love to.” He placed a soft kiss on Roman’s forehead.
“In that case, would you like to join us there tonight? We were planning on star gazing, and we would enjoy your company.” Logan seemed somewhat flustered, like he’d rehearsed this.
“I do believe my schedule’s open tonight.” Janus smiled.
Patton squealed, and moved to hug Janus. Janus held him tightly, and waited for him to let go first. This all felt so amazingly weird. They’d planned out and worried about getting him a gift he’d like and use, and had absolutely nailed it.
“If you’ll excuse me, I must get to work on making sure the constellations will line up right.” Roman winked, and stood up, “Logan, I’m gonna steal your star charts, yeah?” Roman said, already halfway up the stairs.
“Oh, no you will not, I have them perfectly organized and you will not be messing them up!” Logan chased Roman upstairs, and Janus could hear Roman cackling evilly as he did.
Virgil smirked, and leaned back against Janus.
“Open the box, I think you’ll like it even more.” He muttered.
Janus gave him a quizzical look, but opened the box, and- wow.
It was a red, velvety blanket with yellow flowers embroidered around the edge. It had clearly been stitched together by Virgil, as his signature stitching style was along the edges. When he ran his hand along it, Janus could feel the heating pad in the middle, as well as the lavender pouches. It was like a little part of all of them had been sewn into the very cloth of the blanket. Janus felt his eyes tear up.
“Thank you guys, so much.” He choked out.
Patton kissed his cheek, and cuddled him close.
“Merry early Christmas, Janus!”
Then, Janus did something that was probably really stupid, and was probably going to get him yelled at by at least three people.
He let his hand find Patton’s chin, and tilted his head up to look at Janus.
“I really want to kiss you right now, but I won’t if you don’t want to.” He mumbled.
He heard Virgil gasp softly. Patton blinked up at him for a moment, silent, and Janus worried that he’d horribly miscalculated, before Patton grabbed the collar of Janus’ shirt and kissed him sweetly. When he pulled back, Patton had a huge grin on his face.
Patton began giggling to himself.
“What?” Janus asked breathlessly.
“Roman and Logan are gonna be so pissed I kissed you first!”
Virgil gasped.
“Language! Jeez, Pat, one kiss with a snake and you’re swearing all over the place.” Virgil teased.
Janus glanced between the two nervously.
“I feel like I’ve missed something.”
Virgil cackled.
“Well, you see, Patton, Roman, and Logan have all been trying to kiss you before the other two could. A sort of bet, if you will.”
Janus stared at him blankly for a moment, then began snickering.
“Oh, please tell me who you bet for, Virgil.”
“Are you kidding me? Obviously Patton. If you hadn’t initiated it, his puppy eyes woulda caught you off guard eventually.”
“Fair enough,” Janus grinned, “What was bet?”
“Well, Patton gets to do Logan’s nails, which I’m like 80% certain he’ll love, because of the clicking, and I get to dress Roman for a day.”
“Oh, I cannot wait to see that.” Janus purred.
“Despite what he says, Ro loves hoodies, so I’m sure it won’t bother him too much.” Patton shrugged, leaning against Janus again.
“It was more of a joke than anything.”
Janus nodded. Virgil wasn’t completely merciless- The most he’d make Roman do is wear some really emo makeup.
The three sat there peacefully for a little while, Virgil scrolling through his phone as Patton and Janus talked about the winter garden they’d been planning to put somewhere in the Imagination.
“Hey, Pat, what’re we doing for dinner?” Virgil asked.
Patton gasped.
“Oh! Lo sent me this recipe a few days ago for us to make our own pizzas instead of ordering them! I’ve really wanted to try it out!” Patton said as he scrolled through his phone.
He showed his phone to Janus, then Virgil.
“Sounds good, want some help with it?” Virgil glanced across Janus to Patton.
“Sure, kiddo! C’mon!” The two got up, and Patton offered Janus a hand up.
“You wanna help too?”
“Of course.” Janus smiled, accepting the hand up.
Roman led the way as they trampled through the undergrowth of the Imagination. Janus was already bundled up in his new blanket, which- as he’d predicted- was the perfect temperature. It seemed to have some sort of spell on it that kept it to whatever temperature he wanted at any given moment.
Eventually, the forest broke, and they found themselves standing in a field covered in little white flowers, with patches of asters sprinkled about. The moon shone brightly above them, covering the field in a soft glow as they found the large blanket Roman had laid out for them. They sat down, Patton running his fingers over the flowers that poked out over the edge of the blanket.
Logan sat down in Janus’ lap, taking Janus’ hands and fiddling with them.
“Roman, this is… beautiful. The flowers are even season-accurate.” Logan mumbled.
“Well, of course they are! I know my flowers very well, dearest nerd.” Roman stuck out his tongue at Logan.
“Oh Roman, when will you learn not to lie around me? You stole Logan’s book about North American flowers a week ago.” Janus purred.
Roman let out an offended gasp.
“Betrayed! Betrayed by my beloved! How will I go on?” He collapsed into Patton’s lap, sending Patton into a fit of giggles.
“Roman, for the last time, you need only ask to borrow my books, it’s not like I’m going to say no.” Logan softly berated him.
“Mmm… no thanks. It’s much more fun to steal them while Jan distracts you.”
Janus levelled Roman with a betrayed look as Logan gently slapped him in the chest.
“Two can play at that game, Snakespeare.” Roman winked.
“You two will be the death of me.” Logan mumbled amusedly.
Virgil grinned, falling onto his back.
“Lo, did you look at the stars yet?”
Logan looked up, and it was if a switch had been flipped. His eyes lit up, and his mouth laid slightly agape as his eyes flitted from constellation to constellation.
Janus watched with adoration as Logan stared at the sky. He could see now why Roman was so excited about this. Patton sighed happily, playing with Roman’s hair.
“Hey, Lo, what planet is that?”
“Oh, that would be Mercury. It is lucky we were delayed by several hours due to Roman passing out on the couch at midnight, or else we may not have seen it.”
“Wow, Logan, shady much?”
“Of course not. Anyways,” As Logan began info-dumping about Mercury, Janus paid as much attention as his sleep-deprived brain would let him.
They asked Logan questions about constellations, and stars, and he rattled off the answers excitedly while gesturing with his hands. Eventually, they ended up in a cuddle pile, with Logan in the middle, being cuddled by Janus on one side and Roman on the other. Virgil reached over Roman and Logan to hold Janus’ hand, and Patton was cuddling him from behind. It was, basically, perfect.
Logan had started interrupting his own sentences with yawns, and his eyes started drooping.
“M’kay, I think it’s about time we turned in.” Patton mumbled, sitting up.
Virgil yawned.
“What gave that away, the sun?”
Janus frowned, and looked up and, oh. Yep. The sun was rising. He got up, stretching, then helped Logan up. Both Logan and Patton were practically walking in their sleep. The only one who seemed energetic was Roman, who sighed disappointedly.
“I suppose we should get going.” He said.
He snapped, and the blanket they had been laying on folded itself into a square. He picked it up, and carried it in his arm as he took Virgil’s hand and began leading them back through the forest. Logan hung off of Janus’ arm, and Patton walked beside Janus sleepily, holding his hand loosely.
When they arrived home, Janus was practically carrying Logan. Patton had sleepily kissed everyone goodnight, including Janus, which had thrown Roman for a loop, then drifted off to his room. Janus dropped Logan off at his room, confident that he could get himself to bed, and went back into the family room to sit with Roman and Virgil.
Roman sat on the smaller section of the couch, and Virgil sat in the corner, with his legs stretched out to rest on Roman’s lap. Roman glanced up, and patted the spot beside him. Janus sat down next to him and leaned against him.
“So… you kissed Patton before me? That’s illegal.” Roman grinned.
“Oh, shush.” Janus smirked, and gently tilted Roman’s head, pressing a kiss to his lips.
Roman held his face gently, like he was scared Janus might crack if he was too rough. They pulled back, and Roman rested his forehead against Janus’ and dissolved into a fit of giggles.
“Ew, get a room.” Virgil joked, poking Roman with his foot.
Roman just continued laughing. Janus tried to hold in his own laugh, but failed miserably.
“I have been desperately looking forward to this for literal months, oh my god, I’m so happy.” Roman grinned, and really, how was Janus expected to not kiss him again?
“I could get used to this.” Roman said breathlessly.
“Yeah?” Janus whispered.
“Definitely.”
Virgil snickered.
“Boo, get off the stage!”
Roman laughed, and launched himself at Virgil, covering his face in kisses.
“Stawwwppp, I’m tryna scroll through tumblr.”
Roman peppered more kisses on Virgil’s cheek.
“Nope. You are now forever trapped in Kisses Jail for your crimes.”
“What crimes?”
“Being a hypocrite.” Janus smirked.
“Wha- no, never have I ever gone all PDA-ish.” Virgil fought back a smile as he tried to push Roman off of him.
“Oh, please do pretend like you’ve never started making out with Patton in the kitchen, or Roman in the hallways, or Logan in the family room-“
“Okay, okay, I get it.” Virgil finally surrendered himself to Roman, who pressed a few victory kisses to Virgil’s face, then cuddled him.
Virgil gestured for Janus to sit with them, and Janus moved to rest his head on Virgil’s shoulder.
“So… I know we’ve never really had an actual real conversation about this, and we should probably talk about it with Lo and Pat too, but…” Roman paused, “I would really, really like to take you on a date. And later become your boyfriend, if you so wished.”
Janus stared at him for a probably worrying amount of time, but…
“Yes. Please. I’d- I would love that.” Janus stuttered out.
Roman reached across Virgil and took Janus’ hand, kissing it before adjusting his grip to hold in. Virgil leaned his cheek against Janus’ head, and smiled.
“And me. And almost definitely Patton and Logan. If you’ll have us.”
“Of course.” Janus grinned.
And if, in the morning, Patton found them cuddling on the couch and swooned, and if Janus spent the majority of his days cuddling his new boyfriends, and if they would sometimes use his need for heat to coerce him into affection, and if Janus occasionally spent the night sleeping in a cuddle pile on the couch, could you blame any of them?
After all, it is a well-known fact that Janus is cold-blooded.

Here’s the fanfic I wrote yesterday...
Sorry it took me a bit to post this, my girlfriend came over and then we got distracted with videogames... and... then I ran out of energy to edit this puppy...
So without further ado, a late Valentine’s gift to all you lovely people who follow me out there...
A Blooming Romance [A Liquidator x Bushroot Fanfiction]
(Transferred from my Wattpad Drafts)
The rain trickled over the glass making up the greenhouse. Spike laid dormant by his owner and best friend he so loyally stayed by through thick and thin. Sighing as he lifted a leaf of his rose bush, Bushroot sat limply over the delicate plant. Spike tilted his head, approaching Bushroot as he sulked over the rosy reds growing so beautifully.
Nudging his arm, Spike wriggled himself into Bushroot's space. With a lick over his cheek, Bushroot's sullen look of shame evaporated into a soft smile. "Oh Spike, at least I have you through it all."
Spike nodded as he knocked Bushroot onto his back with a pounce. "AH!" He yelped being flung backwards. Succumbing to his friend's demands, he lifted his leafy hands to pet Spike's head.
"Feeling lonely? Only have your pet as a companion in life? Wanna have some wet, wild fun with your watery wonder of a partner in crime?" The gurgled voice of the well known water dog startled Bushroot from his moment with Spike.
Leaning his head back to look where the voice came from. "Oh! It's you! W-W-What are you doing here? Is Negaduck doing a heist today?" Bushroot became excited at the hope of being distracted from the dreary day.
"As vile and hateful as he is, I'm sorry to say I haven't heard anything from Negaduck all day. It seems this Valentine's Day shall go without the evil escapades of the five of us." Liquidator shook his head and pretended to brush dirt off his arm. As he approached his leafy green friend, Bushroot had gotten onto his feet.
"Darn it... Well then that brings me back to my original question!" Bushroot furrowed his brows.
"Hm, well my company's Valentine's special sales are skyrocketing, and I figured I would have something to do today, but it seems all I have is just my money and my shallow company to keep me company." Liquidator started off bragging. His expression saddened a little as he saw Bushroot's bemusement. "And, it seems sometimes even a million dollar company isn't enough to satisfy the humble heart of this hound dog." He splashed his hands to his chest as he gestured.
Bushroot scoffed. "Oh, so I suppose you want my help kidnapping some sad sap so you can have a little fun today?" He knew it was close to improbable that he would really have any fun of his own today.
"Hey now! I may be clever and villainous but that doesn't mean I don't believe in consent! After all, I am very prideful of my position on the top of the Capitalist lifestyle. And what more is Capitalism than even the poorest of the poor being able to choose as little as what water they drink?" Liquidator defended himself.
"T-That's n-not exactly corre-"
"SO! What do you say, my dear partner in crime? Would you like to join me for a night on the town? The evening may be young but there's nothing wrong with starting our romantic outing early!"
"Are you asking me out on a date with you?" Bushroot seemed appalled at first, he'd never been asked out by a man before, well there was that one time in college, but he already had his eyes set on a lovely young lady from the technologies field.
"I think you owe me your answer first before I give you mine." Liquidator smirked deviously.
"Uhhh..." Bushroot felt his heart skip a beat, his cheeks growing as red as the roses beside him. He hadn't thought in all his time of working alongside Liquidator that he'd ever be interested like this. At one point, he'd thought that there would maybe be something between them, after all they went so well together, it was almost fate that they'd both been mutated into their current forms! But Liquidator came off as such a square of a man, nothing more than the stereotypical heterosexual businessman who may even go so far to take bribes from all the worst people, worse than even the dreadful Dr. Slug!
"Well?" Liquidator pulled Bushroot from his flustered silence.
"S-Sure!" He blurted out, shaking from his nerves at the idea of being asked out by someone so confident. He immediately felt himself going down the slippery slope of his usual routine when it came to new people being in his life. He shook off the toxic temptations of growing dependent upon his date for the night. He didn't want to come off too strong. Taking a deep breath, he looked up to Liquidator.
"So it's a date then! Shall we be on our way?" So smoothly as he normally did, he locked arms with his Bushy compatriot.
"Oh, y-yes! Spike, please watch the house while we're out?"
With a nod of confirmation, the two mutants were out in the rainy world.
_
Darkwing Duck had gotten a call to a local restaurant about two very uniquely unmistakable villains hijacking a normal Valentine's Day dinner service.
Having done his normal entrance, he now held his iconic gas gun pointed at Bushroot and Liquidator, who previously sat peacefully at a table. "Stay seated and surrender, or suck gas you sultry sickos!"
"Oh, can't we just have one nice dinner without you bugging in? You're no better than a parasitic case of morning glories!" Bushroot rolled his eyes and slammed his hand to the table below him.
"Lonely? Bitter? Why don't you mind your own business or face the wrath of the Liquidator!" The Liquidator announced as he began winding up to attack the cape-cladded duck.
"Say, since we haven't ordered dinner yet, why don't we just make our own? Pan-Seared Duck, anybody?" Bushroot lifted the candle alongside the wooden roses that had been decoration at their table.
"Wouldn't that hurt the roses though, Bushy?" Liquidator paused in concern.
"No worries, these are nothing more than flammable fakes! Created from the mulched remains of long lost brethren. If anything, this is actually pretty poetic!" Bushroot explained as he set the bushel of roses alight.
"Amazing." Liquidator said softly under his breath as he watched his date's face glowing from the flames.
"Hey! You love sick losers, either surrender or risk being humiliated by the stunning strength of Darkwing Du-UCK!" Darkwing dropped to the floor, dodging the burning bouquet that had been chucked at his face.
By this time, it was only the three of them in the restaurant, 1 v 2, Darkwing Duck was surely overpowered. He yelped as he was chased all around the restaurant, now struggling to get control of the situation. Just as he was about to get ahead of the game with a fire extinguisher and a sponge from the kitchen, all power went out inside of the building, leaving them in the darkness.
Bushroot struggled to find his nearly crystal clear date, but his bewilderment didn't last long as he felt a cooling grasp wrap around his waste as he was carried out of the building, leaving the real loser behind.
Stopping on top of an abandoned tower's rooftop, Liquidator put Bushroot down.
They stared silently at the city-scape below for a moment before Bushroot broke the silence.
"That was the most fun I've had while on a dinner date EVER!" He chuckled as he looked at his date.
"Anytime you want a good time, all you have to do is call!" Liquidator smiled at Bushroot as he imitated holding a phone to his ear.
"W-Why do you suppose the power went out back there?" Bushroot glanced over the blackened city scape. "It seems we weren't the only ones who dealt with a blackout..."
"Hm, seems you're right, I wonder if Megavolt is going to town with one of his devices..."
"Gross." Bushroot shook his head in disgust.
"Says the one who went on a date with a man made of water." Liquidator nudged Bushroot lightly.
"Hey! T-That's different, my date is actually a living being! Way better than any c-cold-hearted robotic piece of machinery that that cooky rat fawns over...!" Bushroot paused for a moment as he thought to himself.
"Uh-huh." Liquidator began humming in disbelieving agreeance as Bushroot went on.
"He's super handsome, for one thing, really suave and intelligent, he also has a great personality, he knows when it's time to get serious and when it's time to have fun. He's also very slick and clever..." Bushroot's words faded as he looked to his date who nodded with a cocky smirk gliding over his muzzle. "What?" He asked nervously fidgeting with his hands.
"Bushroot, I know how you can be with people, you're very clingy and you often care too much." Liquidator started.
Bushroot slumped and began to feel his heart race as he felt his nerves go up. Had he come on too strong? His mind began to race with all the anxious thoughts that had not plagued him since his fling with Posey.
"So I want you to know something. Don't worry about being overly clingy, because regardless, I'm committed to you just like I am to my business. I may seem cold and uncaring at times but just know that no matter what, you're the only one I want. I mean, I don't exactly believe in fate but think about it, we're perfect for each other. You're a plant, I'm living water, it's almost too much to accept us as simply a coincidence!" Liquidator went on.
Bushroot's heart was toyed with as one minute it was racing from him being nervous to him being romantically enthused. Liquidator stopped himself, turning to Bushroot he reached out his paw and to hold Bushroot's leafy green hand.
"All this to say, I know it's too soon to say it but-"
"I love you." Bushroot cut him off.
"Hey! I was gonna say that!" Liquidator snapped back playfully.
"T-Too bad! I-I-I said it first!" Bushroot smiled meekly, hoping to not mess anything up.
"Hm, seems I'll have to take another first in retaliation, huh?" Liquidator cocked an eyebrow at Bushroot as he thought to himself.
"O-Oh? And what first would that be?" Bushroot's demeanor changed to being more submissive as he prepared for the worst.
"Oh nothing, but after all that action, wouldn't you like to lie down and rest?" Liquidator suggested.
"O-On this floor!? Oh I-"
"Bushroot, you sleep on literal dirt, I don't think this is very different, but here..." The Liquidator then shot up and power-blasted a clearing on the dirty roof just to appease his date.
"Whoa... I-I-I guess a little rest wouldn't hurt... besides, knowing that egomaniac, Darkwing is probably out looking for us..." Bushroot slowly lowered himself on the clean patch. "I guess you could say in this case it's best to lay low for a while, huh?" Laughing nervously, he watched as the Liquidator shook his head at his pun.
Laying next to Bushroot, the Liquidator took his date's hand. "May I have you answer a survey for me?" He asked, gazing over the stars above.
"S-Sure! It won't hurt!" Bushroot smiled carelessly.
"On a scale from 1 to 10, how would you rate this date?" He began.
"Definitely a 10!" Bushroot nodded.
"How would you rate your man of the night?" Liquidator went on.
"Mmmm, that's a tricky one..." The Liquidator looked intrigued as Bushroot hummed in thought. "I'd say your rating scale hardly cuts it for my answer, but I suppose I'll settle on a mere 10!"
The Liquidator smirked, if he was able to, he'd be blushing. "Oh, why thank you..." He responded, holding back a flattered chuckle. Clearing his throat he went on. "How- I mean-" He quickly pulled himself back together. "Would you go on another date with me?"
"Oh, that's easy! Of course I would!" Bushroot beams.
"Excellent, any final comments or questions before I conclude this survey?" Liquidator grinned.
"Hmmm, well, next time we should totally show Darkwing what for! And also..." Bushroot looked away from the night sky above, clearer than it normally was without the light pollution. "Thank you."
"What for?" Liquidator asked curiously.
"Taking a chance on an old plant duck like myself... most wouldn't care to."
"It was only a matter of time before I got the courage to ask you out." The water dog shrugged nonchalantly.
Bushroot scoffed. "You? Needing courage?"
As if on cue, Liquidator chimed. "It's more likely than you think!"
"I don't believe it!" Bushroot rolled his eyes.
"Better believe it!" The Liquidator rolled over and hovered his face over Bushroot's. Leaning in closer, the Liquidator stopped as his muzzle was about to meet Bushroot's bill. "Or should I get a scientist to back up my claims?" He said in a low voice.
Bushroot's face went red as he became flustered. "I-I-I-I-I uh, um, well..." He sputtered, stuttered, and stammered until his bill was closed by a kiss. Bushroot's eyes widened in shock, before he relaxed and enjoyed the moment.
Moving away from Bushroot's mouth, the Liquidator rolled off of him. "Now we're even."
Bushroot sat up and stared at Liquidator with a shocked expression, beak agape in a struggle to find the words to say.
"What do you say we take refuge at my place until the morning comes?" The Liquidator lifted Bushroot up onto his feet.
"Oh! u-uh sure! Of course! Yeah! Uh, I mean... sure." Bushroot quickly cooled his excitement.
"No time to waste! The night is still young so we ought to act fast!" Liquidator scooped Bushroot into his arms again and carried him back to his home far above the streets.
"H-Hey look! The city has power again!" Bushroot pointed out as Liquidator made his way over the rooftops to his company's sky scraper.
"Oh! It must have been our electrifying kiss that brought the city to life again!" Liquidator said slyly. Bushroot immediately cringed at the awful pun.
"Don't start with electricity puns! That's Megavolt's thing." Bushroot shook his head.
"Maybe so, but I do it right!" The Liquidator and Bushroot went back and forth well into the night, staying up far past midnight to just talk and joke and laugh in a new way never before done. A new love washing onto shore with the delicacy of a blooming rose.

Girl Crush (III)
Chapter 3: Hydrangeas And Rain
Here we go with a third chapter! As I've written ahead with this story (unbelievable coming form me, I know…) I'm gonna try to keep on posting every 48 or 72 hours :)
No warnings in this, except for tooth-rotting fluff!
Word Count: 2429
Harry and you had spent quite a lot of time together for the past few weeks, and over the course of the last couple of months you had grown to be good friends. He made you laugh like crazy, and the more time you spent with him, the more you were certain that your first impression had been right. He truly was a nice person.
And Harry found your kindness radiant, as well as your wits as hilarious as he had hoped for.
It was easy for the two of you to become friends. The universes you evolved in were different, yet your views of the world were similar. You could spend hours listening to him telling you crazy stories about his tours across the world, and you told him about the stupidest questions your customers asked. He taught you about music, and you taught him about flowers. You had never thought to find curiosity towards this field, yet kept on asking Harry questions about notes and guitars and his favourite songs. Maybe you had underestimated the interest you would find in this art, perhaps it was also because Harry made it so interesting. And he asked about all the flowers you had in the shop, and remembered your favourite ones, and was eager to learn more about plants. If he were to be completely honest, he hadn't thought that he would ever want to learn so many details about plants, but maybe it was only because you were teaching him all these things that he was so curious.
It was Thursday, and for the last 4 weeks, some kind of tradition had settled between you and Harry, where he would pick you up at the end of your shift and you would spend the evening together, either going to the cinema or simply talking around a pizza or walking along the beach near L.A as you had planned on doing tonight.
You were running late though, and Harry was walking around the shop, smelling flowers and admiring vivid colours, his hands clasped behind his back, his sunglasses resting upon his head, and he was biting on a chewing-gum.
The sight of Harry in the shop was so normal by now that none of your colleagues asked him if he wanted to buy anything. They gave him a polite smile, and left him alone to patiently wait for you to be done with your day of work.
Your hand was mostly healed and your days had taken back their crazy pace. You found it refreshing to spend time with a new friend, someone who didn't make a living in selling flowers the way you did. Your determination to become a successful florist had left you with only one or two friends who didn't work in your field of expertise. But spending time with Harry made you realize that maybe you had been missing out for the past few years. Perhaps you had narrowed your life too much during your studies, closing your vision to only keep whatever was linked to your big dream. You were reminded these days though that there was a broader world out there to be listened to and experienced. Which was why, despite your busy schedule and demanding job, you still made time for Harry these days, and if you were honest, were eager to see him again once you parted.
"Just two minutes!" you told him for the fifth time since he had passed the door, rushing across the store to add a new bouquet to the bucket next to him.
He chuckled in response.
"Take your time. I don't mind."
"I just need three… four minutes… four minutes!"
"I love how time expands whenever I'm around you," he joked, making you laugh.
"Shut up! I'm feeling bad for making you wait already."
"Good. I do hope you're feeling terrible to let me with nothing to do but admire these hydrangeas."
You gave him a proud smile.
"Mr. Styles, we might make a florist out of you yet!"
He winked at you, a playful smile on his lips.
"Maybe my teacher is just very talented."
"Oh, I know it's all thanks to me!"
You disappeared to the other side of the counter again, your two laughs filling up the shop.
When you came back in your casual clothes again, Harry was taking a selfie with a perfect stranger, who seemed overexcited. He excused himself when he saw you though, but gave the three fans a little wave as he walked out of the shop with you.
It wasn't the first occurrence of fans spotting Harry and asking for a picture while the two of you were together, but you had to admit that you weren't used to it for now. Perhaps it was because you hadn't really grasped the whole concept of fame just yet.
You had listened to some of his songs by now, and recognized some of them, although you had no idea at first that he had been the one behind them. You liked his records, but you still hadn't fully realized how big his band had been.
He gave you a kind smile, while you headed for his car, a silent way for him to ask if everything was alright and to reassure you, if you needed. You nudged his arm in response, and all was fine.
It was the end of the afternoon, and some dark clouds hovered above the city, menacing and drenched in what promised to turn into heavy rain. You studied the sky, a frown forming on your face.
"It doesn't look so good."
"Should we give up on the beach idea?"
"Yeah… what about a boardgame?"
"Sounds nice to me! Your place or mine?"
"Your Scrabble is in much better shape than mine," you reminded him, and he nodded as you climbed in his car.
"Then mine it is."
You had been driving for no more than five minutes when the first large drops of rain started to explode on the windshield.
"Yep, no beach for today," Harry sighed.
"I like rainy afternoons though. They're meant to be spent in pyjamas drinking hot cocoa."
Harry couldn't help but laugh. Sometimes you spoke without thinking, just like this, and it was always to let out the most adorable thoughts.
"It's kind of true," he admitted.
"It's a tradition we had with my mom when I was little," you went on, a tender smile on your lips.
You turned to Harry, with a face that revealed that you had just had a brilliant idea. Or a particularly silly one, generally, the two were related.
"We should do that."
"Do what?" Harry frowned.
"Spend the afternoon in our pyjamas, and drink hot cocoa."
Harry exploded with laughter.
"While I beat the shit out of you at Scrabble, of course," you added.
"In your wildest dreams, I'm winning this time," he replied. "But sure, you know what? That could be fun. Let's drop by your flat and grab your pyjamas then."
It was a silly idea, but Harry humoured anyway. He drove to your flat first, let you grab a few things, and once at his house you both changed into more comfortable clothes.
But once you were both settled, sitting cross-legged on the floor around his Scrabble board, with two cups of hot cocoa, some chocolate chip cookies and the fall of rain pouring outside echoing through his large house, Harry decided that it wasn't a silly idea at all. He was wrapped in his favourite bathrobe and some oversized clothes, his hair a mess but he didn't care. And across from him, you were dressed in some adorable pink pjs with a unicorn on your t-shirt.
It felt nice. Relaxed. Despite the cold that he had imagined coming from the raindrops outside, he felt warm and happy. You reckoned that it was a reassuring thing indeed, to sit so comfortably with him.
"What about your music? Any news for that?" you asked before reaching for your third cookie, and Harry couldn't help but notice that you seemed to particularly love the biscuits.
"Yeah, I'm gonna go to London for a few weeks, get a band. See some friends who might help with that."
You nodded, and recognized the small change in his posture as his shoulder bent forwards just an inch or two.
You gave him the warmest and most reassuring smile he had ever seen.
"You're gonna be fine. I'm sure you'll find the right people, and make a great record."
"I trust your professional insight," he mocked, huffing in response.
"Don't be like that! You're gonna be fine. Just don't… put too much pressure on yourself. You're talented, if you find the right people to surround you, then nothing can stop you."
He narrowed his eyes at you.
"Have you been secretly listening to my music?"
You shrugged.
"I wouldn't say secretly. We're friends! I reckoned that I had to listen to your stuff. And I like it!"
"Thanks," he finally smiled, his dimples creasing his cheeks, and he lowered his eyes, blushing a little.
"I really do. Which is why I truly believe that… if you do what you love and don't try to go back to the past, but listen to your heart and to who you are instead, you're going to make some amazing songs."
His shoulders straightened once more, and when he looked up at you his smile made his eyes shine a little greener.
"That sounds like an awfully good advice."
"I know," you joked, letting out a chuckle. "When are you leaving?"
"In a couple of weeks."
"You… you'll call me while you're there, right?" you asked in a changed tone, that turned from warm to hesitant, doubtful even.
He looked at you as if you were being ridiculous.
"Of course, I will. And I count on you to call me too. We're friends, right?"
"Yeah, we're friends. And us being friends… does that mean that I get like… a first glance to your future masterpieces or something?"
Harry replied with a bright wave of laughter.
"Haa… I get it now! You just want the VIP seats, huh?"
You joined his own laughter.
"I mean… I'm now friend with a singer, it has to mean I get some privileges! You get the bouquets for your girlfriend, I get private concerts and first looks!"
"Private concerts too? What? You want me to start a show right now?"
"I wouldn't say no…"
"I'm dressed for the occasion, clearly," he answered while dramatically pulling up his hoodie, making you double with laughter.
You were laughing so hard your stomach was aching and your lungs burnt. It was far from a rare occurrence these days though. You guessed it was just an effect Harry had on you, or perhaps on everyone, you weren't sure of that part yet, it didn't matter though.
Harry too was holding his stomach, your laugh was too contagious for him to stop.
Once you had eventually calmed down, you guided the conversation towards a more serious tone again.
"How did Jessica take the news of you leaving though?" you asked, and Harry heaved a sigh.
"Probably as you expect her to."
"That bad, huh?"
"Yeah… I don't know, she's been giving me the silent treatment for the past two days."
"She's just sad, she's gonna be missing her boyfriend."
"Yeah, well, I'm getting a little tired of it all, to be honest."
"Of it all?" you repeated. "What do you mean?"
He didn't answer, and placed his letters on the board instead. You were used to it by now though. Harry was a rather quiet person in general, and he often fell silent when he felt uneasy or sad.
You had learnt not to push, learnt to simply wait for him to answer or choose to skip to another, completely different subject. You let silence fill the room, the clapping of the rain on the roof and against the windows playing a timeless melody.
He didn't dodge the question though. Simply took his time to think of his answer, weight his options: should he tell you or not?
"She doesn't like us spending so much time together. She's a bit jealous, I think."
Your head shot up from the board to his eyes, but Harry was writing his score on a piece of paper, and deliberately avoiding your gaze.
"Oh," you let out. "Would that help if I talked to her? Tell her she has nothing to worry about?"
He shook his head.
"No, no… I'm… I try to reassure her, she's not convinced. If I can understand jealousy to a certain extent, I can't seem to shake the thought off her head, and I'm getting a bit tired of it."
You nodded, your movement slow and reluctant.
"Would it be better if we spent less time together."
But Harry frowned hard.
"Why would we do that? You… you want to do that? You… think we're spending too much time together?"
"No, no! I… I don't want to, I'm glad to have you as a friend. But… maybe it could help you and Jessica…"
"I'm not going to be sorry for the friends I care about, and I'm not going to yield over some stupid nonsense and lose a friend."
"She's your girlfriend."
"Yeah, and she should trust me when I tell her that there's nothing between you and me, and we're just friends, and that I would never cheat on her, period," he went on, his voice getting angrier.
"What are you going to do about it then?"
"Nothing," he shrugged. "There isn't much I can do. She chooses not to believe me."
"And I'm guessing that you going away is not making things easier between the two of you…"
"Not exactly."
"I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you can pull it through with her."
"Yeah… I hope so too. But what about you?" he finally chose to change the topic and to redirect the conversation towards you. "Anything you? Anyone new?"
"Nothing new about me. And nobody new either," you answered with a chuckle. "I'm just thinking about what kind of treats I could ask my friend to send me from England as he goes away."
Harry's laugh was finally lighting up the room again, and it felt right. You reckoned that it was exactly how things ought to be: Harry laughing on a rainy afternoon in a room that smelled like cocoa. How could there be anything more reassuring and soothing in the world?

Home, Part 3: Make My Head Stop Spinning
Logicality
TW: Unsympathetic Patton, physical abuse, emotional abuse, threats, manipulation, toxic household, child abuse (only very little), traumatic events, coping mechanisms, fear, fighting, trying to protect someone, loosing friends, rules, toxic logicality, a confused view.
Emile loved his dads. Of course he did. That’s one of the first things you learn as a child.
Rule number one, love your parents. But sometimes they made him want to cry. Tomorrow was his first day of kindergarten, and daddy and dad are fighting again. Well, daddy said it wasn’t an argument, it was just a discussion. But it got so loud. And there was crying. And loud thumps. And Emile would run to his dads’ bedroom and beg them to stop. And daddy would be angry. So, dad told him to go back to his room. And he wanted to stay, but he was so so scared, so he ran into his room, grabbed his blanket, pillow, and favorite stuffed animal, a Stitch doll, and hid in his closet, trying to block out the noise.
Rule number two, listen to your parents. He would always wake up in the closet, dad coming to get him dressed and ready. Daddy normally was leaving for work when he woke up. Dad would make everyone breakfast and then daddy would drive to work. Mornings were always scary, because Emile could feel all the feelings in the air
Rule number three, tread lightly. Dad let him play a lot outside, but on rainy days dad did crafts with him and tried to teach him things. Emile knew all his ABC’s now, and how to count to twenty, which dad said was very hard. He could also spell his name almost perfectly. But dad said to not talk about it too much. Emile didn’t know why, but he listened.
Rule number four, stay quiet. Then daddy got home from work and played with Emile outside a little bit. When they came in they would have a few minutes before dinner. Dad would stumble out to set the table and bring out the food. Daddy would talk about his day and then ask about Emile’s. Emile would get excited and tell him all about it. Then he was put to bed. Later in the night, he would usually hear yelling. He was trying to get used to it.
Rule number five, fall asleep alone. So, tonight was the worst argument he’d ever heard, because daddy AND dad were yelling. He could hear snippets, even tucked away in the closet.
“I just want to take him to school! It's his first day, why can’t he have both of us there?” That was Dad. He wasn’t yelling too loud. It had been hard for Emile to hear, he had to strain to listen.
“I suggest you learn to shut your mouth Logan, or I’ll shut it for you.” Daddy was not exactly LOUD but he was louder than dad and sounded scary too.
“He deserves some normality. He hears us screaming almost every night, that must be-” Dad was cut off by a bang and smacking sound. He let out a gasp, and Emile could hear sad in his voice.
“It’s your fault, Logan. If you just did as I said, we wouldn’t have this issue. Now, apologize to me and do as I say.”
“I-i-i-”
“Sometime tonight!” Daddy snapped. Emile heard a sigh. It sounded sad.
“I’m sorry. I trust your judgement.” Emile could barely hear dad say that.
‘“I thought so. Now, we’re going to bed.” That was the last thing Emile heard that night, he was so exhausted that he just fell asleep in his closet.
Rule number six, tell no one. That rule was easy to break. Emile never meant to, but it just slipped out a couple times the first day of school. Luckily, no one remembered except him. Or so he thought.
The first day of school followed the basic routine, except when daddy left for work, he also took Emile to school. Dad gave Emile a hug on the way out, and told him to do his very best. Daddy dropped Emile off with the other kids, taking a picture first before going to work. Emile was kind of scared and lonely. He didn’t see anyone he knew, and everyone else had some adults there with them. His lip trembled. Suddenly someone ran up to him.
“Emile! We’re going to the same kindergarten! Isn’t it awesome?!” It was Remy, both of his fathers behind him. Emile immediately stopped with the trembling lip, not because Remy was here, but because no one was allowed to see him cry. Emile grinned brightly.
“Hi Remy! Hi Mr. Remy’s dads!” The one in red introduced them, bending down to Emile’s eye level.
“Hi there Emile. My name is Roman. That’s Virgil.” The other dad in purple waved hello.
“Hi!” Emile waved cheerily before hugging Remy. “Woah I love your backpack!” Remy smiled toothily.
“Thanks! My papa helped me pick it out!” Emile twisted to show his backpack.
“My daddy picked this one out! It has cartoons on it!”
“Cool!”
“Hey kid,” the dad in purple, Virgil?, said quietly, “is your dad here?”
“Nope!” Emile said cheerily. “He had to go to work.” The two aduts exchanged a look that he probably shouldn’t have seen. Emile panicked inwardly. Oh no, he shouldn’t have said that! Now they’re gonna yell and everyone’s gonna hear.
But strangely, no one yelled. Instead, Remy kept talking, and when the bell rang he gave his dads a hug and ran into school with Emile.
Rule number seven, careful around adults.
A few weeks of school had gone by when Remy’s dads said they could have a playdate at their house. They already met at the park and playground a few times, so Emile’s dads were well aware of the friendship. It would be the first time the two kids were at a playdate with only one set of parents. Emile begged his dads to go, and after some pleading, he could. Instead of walking himself home from school, he got to go in a car with Remy’s dads to Remy’s house.
Remy was bouncing in his seat.
“I’m so so so happy you’re coming over!” Emile grinned.
“Me too!”
“I have so many things we can do, we can play outside on the swings, and play hide and seek and play chutes and ladders and-” Virgil chuckled in the driver's seat, Roman sitting in the passenger, writing.
“Alright you two, slow your roll. We’re not even home yet.” Remy pouted in his seat. “Hey, I made some delicious cookies for you two for when you get home.” Remy immediately was happy again, gushing about the cookies.
“Oh yeah, dad makes the best cookies! Oatmeal cookies, but with chocolate chips instead of raisins!” Roman looked up, turning slightly to Virgil, who smirked. Roman rolled his eyes with a smile. Then he looked at a text he just got.
“Hey Emile, I hope it's okay that Remy’s uncle Remus is coming over today.” Emile, curiously looked at him and then nodded.
“Sure!” Remy was so excited about Emile being here, it appeared he could talk about anything. Soon the two were giggling and talking excitedly.
When Virgil pulled into the driveway and parked, the two kids tried to jump out a window to get to play. Roman laughed and unlocked the door, the two kids running inside and stealing cookies.
“Just take off your shoes and put away your backpacks okay? Then you guys can play.”
“Okay papa,” Remy chirped. Emile nodded, already putting his backpack away. Remy rushed with his, practically dragging Emile upstairs to his bedroom. “So what do you wanna play?”
“I don’t know, you pick!” Emile said. Remy smiled excitedly.
“Wanna play dress up?”
“Yeah!” Remy went into his closet and immediately started to toss out costumes.
“Pick one! Wanna be the princess or the prince?” Emile thought for a second.
“The princess!”
“YAY!”
The two kids played for hours in Remy’s room, telling a tale, with stuffed animals being the villains and the two kids being the two heroic royals who saved the day and each other, numerous times. At dusk, it was almost time to leave.
“Hey Remy and Emile, time for Emile to go home. We’re dropping him off.”
“Noooo. We were about to slay the dragon!” Roman appeared at the door, swinging Remy up in the air.
“Is that so?”
“Well, Emi wanted to be friends with it until it killed Gigi,” Remy pointed to the stuffed pig covered in a red blanket in the corner.
“Well, slay the dragon tomorrow, and avenge Gigi’s death! But, Emile’s dad did ask for him to be home by 6, so we need to leave soon. You can come drop him off with us if you want.” Emile stood there, watching the exchange.
Rule number eight, don’t complain.
“Okay dad!” Quickly Remy started to clean up, Roman aiding his son. Emile, watched, slowly coming over to help.
“Oh it's okay, Emile, you’re a guest. You don’t have to help.”
“I don’t mind, I want to help.” Roman looked Emile doubtfully.
“You sure?” Emile nodded eagerly.
“Yup Mr. Roman.” Roman chuckled lightly.
“Well okay then.”
Rule number nine, always help. Emile noticed it was getting dark out. He wondered when Remy’s dads would start to argue. Still, he helped finish up cleaning and then went down stairs.
“Alright two brave questers, get on your shoes please,” Roman turned to Emile, handing him his backpack. “Here’s your backpack. Now, can you two head out to the car? I’m just going to ask Remy’s papa if he wants to come.”
“K dad!” Remy said brightly, and took Emile to the car, both of them buckling in. Emile nervously asked a question.
“Hey, uh, Remy? Why is it so quiet?” Remy looked confused.
“Huh? What do you mean?” Emile elaborated.
“It's almost dark out. That means loud noises start now.” Remy wrinkled his nose.
“No they don’t. What are you talking about Emi?” Emile quickly backtracked.
“Nevermind.”
“Okay!” Remy’s dad came into the car with Remy’s papa, starting to drive. Emile was home far too soon for his taste. It was quiet. But he didn’t know how long. Remy and Remy’s dad walked him up to the door. As soon as they knocked, Emile’s daddy opened the door, Emile’s dad nowhere in sight. Emile’s daddy gave him a quick hug, before escorting them in. The adults talked a little before they left.
Then on the way out of the house, Remy asked a question.
“Hey dad, what loud noises start at night?” Emi said there are loud noises when it's dark, but I never hear them.” (GET YOUR MINDS OUT OF THAT GUTTER) Roman froze and Patton quickly shut and locked the door. Emile didn’t see what happened next outside.
“LOGAN!” Emile’s daddy shouted, gripping Emile’s shoulders tight. Emile wants to cover his ears and cry. He didn’t know what he did, but something was wrong. Emile’s dad ran down the stairs quickly, old glasses askew.
“Yes?” He asked softly. “What do you require?” Patton rolled his eyes, and shook Emile slightly.
“Your son just said something to them,” Patton said, his voice filled with rage. Emile was so scared. Daddy was yelling and shaking him and his grip hurt and he just wanted to be safe. Logan flinched. “He just said something about the disagreements!”
“Patton, please let Emile go. You’re scaring him.” Logan desperately tried to remain calm, his voice wavering. Patton snorted.
“He should be.” Emile started to panic, tears pouring down his face. He tried to wiggle out of the grip that tightened, panicking. Logan began to beg.
“Please let him go, he’s five, he didn’t know any better, please he’s just a child Patton, you’re scaring him!” Patton ignored him as Emile kept crying. Then Logan said the one thing that would push the attention off of Emile. “I told him to say it.” Patton’s grip loosened on Emile’s shoulders and Emile immediately ran toward Logan in terror, hugging him and crying.
“You what?” Patton said, dangerously angry again. Logan picked Emile up, trying to soothe him. Logan tried not to wilt at the look Patton gave him.
“I just thought it would be a good idea to say something.” Patton kept glaring before coming up to Logan’s ear. Emile finally stopped crying in Logan’s arms.
“You do something like this ever again, and I promise, he won’t just be terrified,” Patton hissed in Logan’s ear. Logan turned pale and nodded. “As for you, I don’t think you should be friends with the Empires. No talking to them ever again okay?” Patton sounded calmer and more soothing. “Its for your own good kiddo.” Emile nodded.
“Okay daddy.”
“Now time for bed.”
Rule number ten, don’t have friends. It's too easy to get hurt.
Emile listened to his father. When he went to school the next day, he didn’t so much as glance at Remy, even though he felt sad. He only caught one glimpse of Remy on the way out of school. It looked like he had been crying. By the time they were in fourth grade, Emile was a completely different person, and so was Remy. Everyone at school had eventually heard of the dramatic end to their friendship and how it ended them both. Remy became known as the gay J.D. and Emile as the therapist friend you can always talk to. By 7th grade, the two barely passed each other in hallways. And by highschool, Emile forgot someone named Remy Empire ever existed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jason Grace smiled as the birds beside his head chirped and then swiped his phone to cut off the amusing sound. His fiery friend, and co-worker thought it was hilarious to steal his phone and change his alarm tone every few weeks. Usually it was something inane and silly like a cartoon laugh track or just a repeating “It’s time to get up BakerBoi” that gets increasingly louder. He had arrived to work with a scowl on his face only to see the shit-eating grin of Leo Valdez waiting at the door.
Now Jason stumbles out of bed, letting his limbs loosen as he pads softly to the bathroom, feeling cool tile and a winter breeze on his exposed skin. He loves mornings like this, when the world isn’t quite awake, and the sky hasn’t decided what colour it wants to be for the day. He knows in is baker’s bones that it’ll be cold and rainy, but he has time for a morning jog before the world starts crying.
“Good morning boss,” A bright eyed, fidgeting Leo greets as he steps into the bakery.
Jason had been there at seven thirty, pulling down the café chairs and cleaning the counters. He already had a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies and about three different types of muffins in the oven. The bread was waiting for the busy hands of Leo and Hazel who somehow always seemed to make heavenly fluffed, soft rolls and the deliciously crusty baguettes. Hazel jokes that it’s the New Orleans blood that flows through her veins. They’re all half inclined to agree.
“Morning Valdez, I like the alarm this week.” He tosses a grin over his shoulder before going back to his icing ritual. Mix, taste, mix, ice.
“I figured you would old man. Even though i much prefer my ASMR food audio from last week. What’s the specialty today?”
“We need to get beignets out and the pain au chocolats before the breakfast crowd. Also the fruit stuffed pastry twists and the honey bread have to be prepped before we open so we can bring them out hot in time for the brunch crowd. Specialty today is a new thing I’ve been working on. Blue blondie doughnuts with Oreo cream filling and sugar glaze.”
“Gods boss, you tryna give people heart failure?”
“Just trying to insert some sweetness into the world,” He winked.
Before Leo could give an undoubted snarky reply a bubbly head of dark brown curls and glittering eyes popped around the door.
“Goooood morning everyone,”
Jason couldn’t help the smile that graced his face at her cheeriness, “Hello Miss Levesque, glad to see a prettier face around here,”
Leo made a strangled noise of indignation from the other side of the kitchen but didn’t get the chance to voice his offense before the last member of their little group walked in.
“Ah there you are Miss McLean, I do wonder how you arrive with Hazel and still manage to get in after her.”
She gave him an exasperated look, “I have to say goodbye to my girlfriend before I come in Boss. You’re the one who banned couple calls in the bakery.”
“Well maybe if we didn’t have to hear you and Annabeth explicitly planning your night’s activities I wouldn’t have had to do that.”
Piper just rolled her eyes and went to grab her apron and a cloth to wipe down the tables.
"Everyone ready?" He asked, from the door of the kitchen an hour later.
"Ready for the storm boss," They all yelled back, as they did each morning.
"Then let's roll like thunder," He grinned, flinging the doors to Ambrosia Bakery open.
"Oh thank the heavens, I could smell the goodness from here and it was a struggle to keep the drool in," One Reyna Avila Ramirez Arellano breathed in deep.
"Good morning my favourite customer," Leo smirked from behind the counter.
"Jason tell your bread boy to stand down before I make him,"
"Is that an invitation?" Dark eyebrows wiggled in amusement.
"That is a threat," She growled.
"Well mark me down as scared and h—"
"Valdez I swear if you finish that sentence I'm putting you on wash-up duty for the next week."
A faint "you got it boss" followed Jason into the kitchen, where he allowed himself to smile. It was an ongoing amusement that Leo flirted with Reyna and in return she came up with increasingly terrifying threats.
"Jason, your sister is here to see you" Hazel said, gently shoving him out the way so she could take over rolling the pastry.
"Get the doughnuts ready for the fryer I'll be back soon, thank you!"
He maneuvered around a blushing Leo who had icing on his nose and a suspicious lipstick stain on his cheek, finally making his way to the confectioners stand.
"What's up loser?" He said by way of greeting.
"Hey you're only allowed to call me that if you come baring nice things." Thalia Grace frowned.
"I am nice things," He pouted.
"Not even on your best day." She snorted, "I want to know if you're coming to the gala this weekend. I need a date to steal extra bread-sticks for me."
"Why can't I just make you bread-sticks and we can sit in your lounge and watch bad reality TV?" He groaned
"Because I have to show face or the sponsors aren't going to sponsor. Besides you need a night out. You're gonna start smelling like bread if you don't take a break."
"It's insulting that you think I wouldn't want to smell like breadsticks."
She laughed at, that ruffling his hair, "Just be ready by seven. You better be wearing a suit."
And with that his sister had grabbed her daily croissant and cappuccino and vanished into the drizzling day.
Before he could make it back to his safe haven beside the ovens and marbled counter-tops a flash of black hair caught his eye.
Turning around he couldn't contain the grin that tugged at his lips; standing by the counter already staring intently at the newest creation was Jason's favourite customer.
"Hello Percy Jackson,"
"Jason," A dazzling smile revealed pearl white teeth and the tiniest dimple on a cheek the color of rich toffee.
"I see you've already found Neptune's Tridoughnut,"
A bright laugh escaped a wickedly beautiful mouth, "Oh I love that. How'd you come up with that one?"
Jason smiled softly, debating whether to tell the owner of the 5-Oceans Conservation Company that he was the muse behind all of his latest creations, hence the variations of green and blue.
Instead, as he did every time Percy asked, he lied, "My sister went to an opening ceremony for a new exhibit at the Education center all about Mythology so I thought I’d offer my services and well, they were a hit."
Piper who was walking past at that exact moment coughed something that sounded suspiciously like "Liar" but with a pointed glare she disappeared behind the counter.
"That sounds great. Guess I'll have to recruit you for all my functions," He winked, a small smirk playing at his lips.
Jason cursed his pale cheeks and hoped the blush he now sported wasn't too noticeable, "What can I get you besides a specialty doughnut?"
"Can I get one banana and walnut muffin, a dozen chic chips, and I'm gonna go see mom this afternoon so maybe a couple of caramel pastry twists and some blueberry muffins?"
"Sure. I guess Estelle is off her carrot cake faze?" He laughed, remembering how Percy had to stop at the bakery twice a week to grab carrot and pecan mini cakes just for his little sister.
"Ugh she's onto wanting fruit in absolutely everything now so my mom has been frantically buying boxes of peaches, strawberries and apples to cut up and send with her for lunch at school." Green eyes rolled in fake annoyance.
"Well if she likes fruit things maybe she should try the raspberry and orange pastry twists?" He pointed to a display stand piled with various pastries coloured by blackberry jam, apricot pieces, kiwi slices and mango syrup.
"I could kiss you right now!" Percy exclaimed rushing towards the display, unaware that the baker was frozen to the spot.
I could kiss you, could kiss you, kiss you, kiss...
Jason's brain had short-circuited, his neurons too busy having a dance party with his hormones to process the world.
I could kiss you.
A lazy, unconscious smile took over his face as he stood there in the middle of his bakery, arms slack, head lolled, and eyes crinkled.
"Jason?" A faraway voice called.
"Jason? Hello?"
And suddenly a hand was waving in front of his vision trying to get his attention.
He pulled himself out of his reverie, blinking back into existence, "Right yes the pastries"
"Didn’t get enough sleep last night?" Percy teased, slugging him softly in the shoulder.
He snorted at the implication, "Unfortunately I'm a bit of a grandfather. Sleep early, rise early."
"Oh guess you like morning activities then,"
He sputtered, head snapping up to stare into twinkling eyes, "N-no, I just meant—"
"I'm kidding Mr BakerMan," That brilliant, bright laugh again, "I know you're a homebody. Your sister likes to tell me how boring you are."
He huffed at that, "We'll see if she gets her pear tarts this weekend."
"Speaking of this weekend," A sly grin played at Percy's mouth, "Are you coming to the gala?"
"Yea," He sighed, "Thalia says she needs me to steal bread-sticks ."
Sea green eyes widened before Percy burst out laughing. In a matter of moments tears were streaming down his face.
If Jason wasn't so smitten with that gorgeous smile and those mischievous eyes he may have been inclined to laugh too. But Percy Jackson was a vision he half believed only his dreams could conjure.
When the laughter had mostly seized Percy wiped his eyes and managed to gasp, "That sounds exactly like something Thalia would ask. When we worked on the marine life project together she always stole the mints from every CEO’s office because she said they had enough money to buy a mint factory, they could afford to replace a single bowl."
"Yep, her life goal is to end capitalism. I swear if it wasn't for Annabeth, Thalia would be walking into office buildings with a sack like some reverse Santa Claus where she steals the office supplies and fruit bowls."
"Well I can't wait to see you stuffing your pockets with bread-sticks on Saturday so I guess I'll see you then," He gave another dazzling smile.
"Yea, and say hello to little Estelle for me. Tell me how she likes the pastries."
"Don't worry I'm sure I'll be back soon with a long list of request."
"Can't wait." He grinned.
Percy chuckled, "Me neither, see you Friday." And then he was gone.
Oh gods, Jason thought, how am I ever gonna survive Percy in a suit?

things i love about you: your love is golden
a post-little do you know drabble series // story page
Mona’s favorite part of the day was getting to go home.
She loved her job and happy hour with her co-workers. She even loved meeting Harlow to grab a coffee during their respective lunch breaks or meeting the guys at Connemara’s—where she no longer worked but will sometimes help Jingle out if she was ever in a pinch—for a drink or two.
But none of those things could ever compare to getting back to her and Niall’s apartment, kicking off her shoes at the door, fingers promptly finding the warmth of her sunshine boy, the weight of the world evaporating from her shoulders.
Today, she opened the door to the heavenly scent of cinnamon, her body instantly warming up from the slight chill outside. From the kitchen came telltale sounds of Niall moving about, probably baking something, and Mona was already smiling at the thought. She shed her jacket and shoes, stowing her bag away on the hooks near the door before she followed the smell to the kitchen.
“Mmm,” she hummed as she entered, taking in the aroma of cinnamon and brown sugar and coffee, all the most homely and wonderful scents she could think of. There was her sunshine boy, back turned to her as he fiddled with something on the countertop. “Smells amazing in here.”
At the sound of her voice, Niall turned around to send her the absolute sweetest smile, a slight sheen of sweat glistening against his forehead, a bit of flour dusted across his nose and chin. Her heart warmed at the sight, never losing the opportunity to flutter at how endlessly adorable he was. And he was all hers. “Hi, darlin’,” he greeted, voice soft and warm and filled with a sort of adoration that made her toes tingle. She would never get tired of him calling her that.
“Hey, stud,” she replied through a smile, fingers automatically reaching out to swipe at the flour on his face before pulling him in to press a quick kiss to his lips. “You’re home early.” When she pulled away, she was delighted to find that rosy blush she loved so much blooming across his skin and she couldn’t help the way she laughed at the sight of it. All these years later he still couldn’t take a compliment. “Watcha making?”
He shrugged, turning his attention back to meticulously folding dough into a bundt pan. “Cinnamon roll coffee cake for Liam’s party. Special request from the birthday boy himself.”
Mona rolled her eyes but laughed nonetheless. The cinnamon roll coffee cake concoction immortalized after a particularly draining study session back when they were in college. It was four in the morning and none of them had gotten any sleep; Niall, Liam, and Harry had been mucking about in the kitchen as they procrastinated, tossing ideas back and forth of a dessert they could create, and low and behold, the cinnamon roll coffee cake was born.
It wasn’t her favorite dessert. She found it tooth-achingly sweet and too much of it could give her a headache. But, after all, it was Liam’s birthday and he loved this stuff. “What time are we leaving for that anyway?” she asked, already rummaging through the fridge for a snack. She didn’t think she’d be able to hold out until the party for food. She found some bread and decided on toast with the leftover pasta from the night before.
“Whenever you’re ready, I suppose. You know Liam’s parties…no beginning and no end.” They both shared a laugh at that. Gatherings at Liam’s place were known to get a bit wild, lasting well into the next morning. Once, Mona wondered out loud whether perhaps they were getting a bit old for the crazy rave-like parties; Harlow had mulled that over before deciding that they would never get their twenties again and they were exactly meant to be spent at Liam’s parties.
As the microwave warmed her pasta, she took at the opportunity to slink into her sunshine boy, pulling him away from his dessert preparation for a moment so she could wrap her arms around his middle. She couldn’t help it. He was wearing his softest jumper and he was always so warm. She often went about her day wishing she could have somehow captured some of his brilliance in a jar to save and carry around with her so her skin never had to tingle with the boundless way it craved him. But then she’d remember that being away made it so much sweeter to come home and wrap herself up in him like this, feeling the pools of his sunshine permeate through her skin and fill her up.
Niall, for his part, was used to this way of hers, and pulled her into him as best he could with his sugar caked hands. The microwave gave off a loud trill to signal that her food was ready but she didn’t care. She just wanted to be able to stay this way and have time stand still for them, which of course wasn’t possible, but at least they could steal these moments together when they didn’t have anywhere else to be for a while.
“You’re extra lovey today,” Niall remarked, smiling against her forehead.
She wrinkled her nose in response, looking up only for him to press a proper kiss to her lips, slow, languid, and gentle, and she absolutely melted into him. She sighed. “Long day.”
“Yeah?” He pulled away, sweet smile intact but eyes watching her carefully. “We don’t have to go tonight if you don’t want to.”
“No, I’m okay,” she said, smiling when he pressed their foreheads together. “Just a little tired.” He hummed, seemingly unbothered by that answer since he seemed perfectly content to close his eyes, holding her close in the middle of their kitchen. “How was your day?”
He shrugged as best he could with them all wrapped up in each other. “Was meant to interview someone running for city council for a story but they canceled at the last minute. Slow day so ended up leaving early.” His voice was slow and serene, dripping with sweetness and warmth. Mona made sure to savor him. She often forgot to do that with the bustle that came with a workday. Niall noticed because he always did, smiling against her cheek. “You know, I’d love to stay like this but I have to get the stuff out of the oven.”
She giggled lightly. “Fine,” she muttered, huffing slightly as she begrudgingly let him go. He swatted her playfully with a tea towel when she grabbed her food from the microwave.
They spent the rest of the time chatting aimlessly, with her eating leftovers and him putting the finishing touches on his dessert. He surprised her with a batch of chocolate chip cookies because “I know you don’t like this sugary shit so I made you your favorite,” and she thanked him with a grateful kiss.
Slowly, Mona felt the typical exhaustion brought on by the workday leave her, as it always did whenever she spent time doing absolutely nothing with Niall. He had this uncanny ability to make her feel completely at peace, her pulse a steady thrum, mind cleared from the buzz of thoughts that plagued her. He didn’t even know he was doing that for her, or at least she figured he didn’t. How could he anyway? It wasn’t something one could do on purpose.
And if she held onto to him for a few extra moments before she went off to take a shower, well then he simply smiled and took it in stride.
~
Liam’s party was, as usual, nothing short of absolutely wild.
Just as she and Niall were walking in, someone bustled past them only to puke in a plant outside someone’s door, a few loud boys trailing out afterwards, guffawing at the person for being a lightweight, and Mona sent Niall an unamused sideways look, mentioning that she almost felt like a college freshman again. Niall, in his typical easygoing fashion, simply laughed and told her to lighten up, promising that they didn’t have to stay for too long if she didn’t want to.
They parted ways shortly after making their way inside, with Niall being pulled away by Harry and Mona spotting Harlow in the distance.
“You’re back!” she said excitedly to her best friend as she approached, throwing her arms around her in an embrace. “How was Greece?”
Harlow laughed, leading Mona to the bar area for drinks. “It was really fun. And I think Zayn and I needed some time apart anyway.”
This surprised Mona. “Trouble in paradise?”
Harlow shrugged, preparing a rum and coke. “I don’t know. I just feel like things haven’t really been great between us lately. And I think he feels the same way.”
Mona accepted the drink passed to her with a frown, mulling this new information over. It was the first she’d been hearing of any trouble between her two friends, who have been in an on-and-off sort of relationship for years now. “I’m sorry to hear that.” She couldn’t think of anything else to say. After all, she was never one to meddle in anyone’s relationship, only offering advice if she was asked for it.
Harlow smiled before taking a sip of her drink, and from the familiar sparkle in her eye, it was clear to Mona that she wasn’t all that upset about anything. And if Harlow wasn’t bothered, then Mona didn’t see the need to broach the subject any further. After all, they were adults and could work out their issues themselves. “It’s whatever. Wanna see some pics from Greece?”
They pushed their way out towards the balcony area to find seats, the night air warm on their skin—a stark contrast to the cold, rainy weather that morning—as they laughed at videos of Harlow’s drunk co-workers singing karaoke terribly. Harlow remarked that Mona and Niall should take a vacation somewhere since all they seemed to do was work and Mona had to admit that the idea wasn’t half bad, making a mental note to ask Niall about it later.
“By the way,” Harlow started, eyes sparkling in that mischievous way of hers, and Mona braced herself for whatever she was up to this time. “I think Niall’s gonna propose to you soon.”
Mona simply blinked at her friend, completely caught off guard. So caught off guard, in fact, that she started to laugh. “What makes you say that?”
Harlow shrugged, downing the last dregs of her drink and sliding it onto a nearby table. “I just have a feeling.” At that, Mona rolled her eyes, sending her nosy best friend an unimpressed look, which had Harlow grinning madly at her. “Okay, fine, he might have said something to me.”
A yelp left Harlow’s lips when Mona threw a napkin at her, damp from the condensation that had dripped from her cup. “You’re not supposed to tell me about it, then!”
“Sorry, sorry!” Harlow tossed the napkin right back at her, but she did at least have the decency to look a little apologetic. “This came out all wrong because I’m tipsy but I just wanted to see where your head was at, that’s all.” She smiled, eyes soft now, and when she reached out, Mona let her hold her hand. When Harlow spoke again, her voice was gentle and soothing, all traces of playfulness gone, replaced with that protective, almost maternal tone she always took up when checking in with her friend. “I just want to know if this is what you want and if you’re happy.”
Mona suddenly felt so much all at once, a million thoughts running through her head. Then, she thought of Niall, her sunshine boy, who brought light and warmth into her life every day, who loved her unconditionally, even when she didn’t love herself, even when she could be unlovable. It hadn’t been easy, letting him in completely, allowing herself to feel like she deserved him. But he made her feel so very safe and loved. He was her home, her anchor at the end of a long day, a beautiful soul whose arms were always open for her to step into whenever things felt like too much.
She looked up at Harlow again, who was still watching her carefully, her eyes filled with something Mona always saw whenever they talked about this: hope. So she smiled back, squeezing Harlow’s hand. “I am happy.” It was the honest truth. “And…I do want this.”
Harlow exhaled in what seemed to be relief, her smile growing tenfold now. “Then I am happy too.” She untangled their hands and relaxed back into her chair. “I honestly didn’t really want to have to stall him or something if this wasn’t what you wanted. I know you don’t like surprises.”
Mona laughed, thankful for her best friend in that moment for always knowing what she needed. “Thanks. But Niall and I have talked about this, you know. I guess I just didn’t really think that it would be so soon.”
Harlow waved this off. “Well, to be honest, for all I know he could have been talking about doing it next year or something. He didn’t tell me when.” She turned to give Mona an amused smirk. “Maybe he knew I’d have this conversation with you.”
They both laughed at that because it was probably true. Niall knew all of them more than they probably knew themselves. He’d somehow become the person everyone turned to for advice these days. “So,” Mona started slowly, taking a sip of her now watered-down drink. “What else did the two of you talk about.”
Harlow sent her a wicked grin at that, grabbing Mona’s drink from her hand and downing it herself. “Now, Mona darling. Some things are better kept a secret.” She giggled at her own cleverness as Mona rolled her eyes, muttering something about getting another drink before rising from her seat, Harlow following her to the bar.
The night progressed as it usually did at that sort of thing: they drank and laughed and danced. Mona tore up the dance floor with Harlow until she couldn’t feel her feet anymore, peeling away from the crowd of sweaty bodies in favor of the cool breeze of the balcony, wandering around in search of her boyfriend.
She found him on a couch, an already drunk Harry draped over him, unruly curls pressed into his neck as he rested on Niall’s shoulder, and she couldn’t help the way she laughed to herself at the sight. Harry Styles, always the lightweight.
“Hey,” she called out teasingly, slumping into Niall’s other side and giving Harry a playful shove. “Paws off my boyfriend, drunkie.”
Harry whined, frowning lopsidedly at her as he shoved her back. “Can’t we share? You know I love a good cuddle with Nially Poo and I never get to see him anymore because you hog him.”
Mona giggled at the way he grinned at her. “That’s not true!” she retorted, even though it was kind of true. She and Niall worked all the time and the little bit of free time they had was always reserved for each other. “And anyway, no we can’t share because he’s mine.”
Harry huffed, nuzzling closer to Niall regardless. “And to think I was going to tell you that I missed you,” he said sarcastically, reaching out to flick her wrist but missing, which had Niall laughing his big sunshine laugh.
Mona scoffed. “Well I didn’t miss you because I’m mad at you.” At that, Harry sat up slightly, pouting now. “You never have time to hang out with me even though you literally work across the street from me. All I ever hear from you are excuses of how busy you are.”
“That’s not true!” Harry groused.
“It is kind of true,” Niall said, shrugging when Harry sent him a sad look. “I mean, we usually hear updates about you from Jingle, of all people.”
Harry sighed, apologizing. He caught them up on his new job at an elementary school, how it was a bit crazy and he was so tired at the end of the day that he didn’t have the energy to socialize. He promised to stop by one day when Niall offered to cook him dinner and his favorite cupcakes, his spirits lifted at the mention of food. Mona even got in a cuddle with him before they were all being gathered to another room where Liam was going to cut his cake, a massive thing with sparklers on top.
When Harry, Niall, and Mona found Zayn and Harlow, they all took photos and smashed cake into Liam’s face, laughing their heads off the entire time, and Mona realized how much she missed seeing her friends every day now that they didn’t all live in the same apartment complex. They made the most of their time together anyway, getting stupid drunk and dancing the night away like a bunch of idiots.
When the night wound down, she pulled Niall into her, their bodies swaying gently to the slow song that had been playing through the speakers. He smiled at her and she melted into him, thinking of Harlow’s words earlier, thinking of starting a new chapter of life with him. The mere idea of it filled her with an unparalleled happiness, the feeling bubbling through her, growing tenfold when he leaned in to press a kiss to her lips.
“What’re you so smiley about,” he murmured against her mouth, a laugh knocking around in his throat, and she couldn’t help herself when she kissed him again, not caring that they were in the middle of the dance floor.
“I’m just really happy,” she whispered back, and she knew that he heard her through the music because he smiled even bigger.
And maybe she had too much to drink. Or maybe she was just drunk on happiness and Niall. But she couldn’t help herself later when she tugged him into a bathroom to kiss him deeper and harder, couldn’t help her fingers as they curled into the waistband of his jeans, and especially couldn’t help the way she reached out to turn the lock on the door when he let out a delicious sigh into her mouth.
Besides, they hadn’t been reckless in a while.

I recently requested a prayer from Skippy when my mothers was seriously ill. Skippy and Brewster both contributed to the prayer and they really got through me through difficult times. We buried my mother aka Nana today and we all said goodbye. My daughter read her this letter at the funeral today and I wanted to share it with you. I never post on tumblr I enjoy all #megxit posts and appreciate your insight and research regarding MM.
Dear Nana,
The last time that we talked you told me that you don’t like funerals. When I asked, “why?”, you said, “at funerals people just say a bunch of nice stuff about the person that everyone knows wasn’t really true.” To that I ensured you that people only have nice things to say about you because you are simply the best. Although, you didn’t seem convinced, but you can put your fears to rest because I promise I am only going to say things that are 100% honest.
On the topic of honesty, you are the most honest person I have ever met. A bit brutally honest actually. For example, I remember coming back from the beach one day and you asked me if I gained the “freshman 15” after going away to college. A bit perplexed by your sudden question, I replied, “umm..I don’t really know, I haven’t weighed myself…why? Do you think I’ve gained weight?” You said, “well yeah. You look like you’ve gained some weight. Maybe not a full 15...maybe more like 5 or 10. You still look good though.” Even though that probably wasn’t what I was looking to hear while I stood in the kitchen in my bikini, I can appreciate the honesty. Another example of your honestly was the time that I painted you a watercolor painting of a cat (because I know how much you love cats). I was so excited to give it to you after working on it all night, and when I presented it to you, you look one look and said, “what happened to the tail? The tail is too short it looks like something happened to it.” I said, “oh yeah, I guess the tail is a little short, but do you like it?” You replied to my hopeful question with, “well, it’d be nicer if the tail was longer, but I’ll still hang it up.” Yup, you are definitely not scared to speak your mind. If I ever need an ego check, you know where I’ll be. With that being said, despite the small blows to my self esteem, I’ve always admired your honesty as it was quite refreshing and always consistent.
Speaking of consistency, you are one of the very few people that I can always count on to be consistent. For example, everyone always looks forward to going to Nana’s for dinner because everything you bake or cook is always amazing. From your angel hair pasta, to your lima beans, to your brownies, zucchini bread, pies and magical (almost too perfect) assortment of Christmas cookies every year, everything you make is always consistently delicious. Even from the youngest age, I always knew that I could look forward to dinner and dessert at Nana’s. You are also extremely consistent when it comes to buying anything marketed as “NEW!” I know that if I walk into your kitchen there will always be a package of the newest limited edition of Oreos sitting there…unopened. Even your response to the question, “Nana why did you buy these?” was consistently, “it’s new!” You’ve never failed to tell me how much you dislike the fact that my jeans are ripped and I actually bought them like that. I can always expect to see clean clothes perfectly hanging on the clothes line in the yard. You consistently wear Keds and cashmere sweaters while eating a sticky bun from the bakery in the morning. You are also pretty consistent with feeding the dog at family parties even when my mom and Johnny Z asked everyone not to. Watching you feed Marsden huge chunks of cheese and crackers under the table right after being asked not to always made me laugh. You always keep a pitcher of iced tea in the fridge, fresh peaches on the counter, and mint chocolate chip ice cream in your freezer (never the white mint though because according to you the white mint does not taste the same as the green mint ice cream, and you will not eat the white mint). I’m really glad that mint chocolate chip is your favorite flavor of ice cream, because it’s my favorite too.
Sometimes I wonder where I got my sweet tooth, but if you’ve ever stayed up past midnight with Nana, you would know that the timeframe of 12 am to 3 am is filled with candy, sour cream and onion chips, popsicles, Cheetos, and ice cream sundaes. People always think that you don’t eat very much, but you and I both know that they just don’t stay up late enough to witness the late night snacking that happens over a game of scrabble, while baggage or family feud is playing on the TV. These late nights have been some of my favorite memories over the years, and you always gave your best advice during these times. For example, I vividly remember one summer night at age 16. I was on my second bowl of what was now melted mint ice cream and losing pretty bad at a game of scrabble. To make matters worse, all the letters I was left with were all vowels and my mind drifted to the break up I had earlier that day. Shockingly, I began to cry for probably the 7th time that day, and you said, “Oh god what are you crying for? You should be happy. Now you can play the field. Playing the field is much more fun than having just one boyfriend.” Like I said, you always give the best advice.
As I’m thinking about all the advice you’ve given me, I am reminded of all the other things that you’ve shown and taught me. For example, thanks to you, I know what its like to walk into a room with a celebrity. I remember it like it was yesterday, one rainy night my mom and I drove down to play a game of bingo with you. When we walked in the door, I was immediately stopped and questioned by the tight security who asked to see my ID because I apparently looked “12” – which would be a no-go considering that apparently the bingo staff takes the age restrictions of bingo very seriously. Just as I was about to show the security my proof of ID to confirm that I was in fact above the age of 18, you came to our rescue. A simple, “they’re with me,” and all of a sudden we were treated like royalty and all further questions turned into staff members offering us refreshments. I learned something else that night too. It was brought to my attention that my mom and I are really bad at bingo, like really bad. It’s a good thing that you were there to inform us that our cards were upside down and we had been playing the game completely wrong for the first half hour. By the end of the four-hour bingo game, you were playing all of our cards for us alongside the 20 that you had laid out in front of you, while my mom and I resorted to eating gummy bears and counting the number of sneezes for every minute that went by. Watching you play bingo was honestly an honor because that takes a level of skill I most definitely did not inherit. When I think about you, I think about good times like these, and how honored I am to be your granddaughter.
Although above all, when I think about you, I think about how strong you are. A particular moment of strength was the time that you broke your hip on the fourth of July. Most people would probably be crying or at least deeply concerned with the physical pain they were experiencing, but you were much more concerned with the deviled eggs that were in your hands when you fell along with who was going to make the pie if you went to the hospital. Unfortunately for us, the blueberry pie was left in the hands of Uncle Jeff…and I’m just gonna go ahead and say, your concerns were all too valid. To be honest I’ve always thought about my mom and wondered how she became such a strong, independent, and amazing woman, but now I can clearly see that its because she always had you to look up to. And I want to thank you for being someone that I could also always look up to. Thank you for teaching me all about the virtue of honesty. Thank you for being someone I could always consistently depend on to be there. Thank you for all of the late night chats and all of your priceless advice. Thank you for passing on your love of baking and sharing a sweet tooth with me. Thank you for gracing me with the honor of learning how to play bingo from a real pro. Thank you for showing me what a strong, kind, and beautiful woman looks like. Thank you for everything.
I started this letter by referencing the last time we we had the chance to talk. You explained why you don’t like funerals because of the apparent lack of honesty. Well, I hope this letter delivered the kind of authenticity that you were hoping for because I just have one last thing that I would like to revisit. In that same conversation, after we had discussed the flaws within funerals, I told you that I love you. You replied by saying, “aw I love you too, and I hope that I can love you from heaven. I think I can.” Your response to my statement was one that I will never forget. So, I just want to say that I will always love you, no matter where you are. Thank you for being you.
Love,
Ella

A Rainy Day
Pairing: Platonic LAMP (could be seen as romantic - theyre very gay)
Word Count: 1,391
Content warnings: small self-worth issues, crying, feelings of not being good enough, food mentions, mentions of skipping a meal (it doesnt end up happening, but mentioning it just in case)
Summary: Logan, Roman, and Virgil are out for the day, and Patton is home alone. He starts off keeping himself busy, but eventually the loneliness gets him down. Patton-centric hurt/comfort
Notes: So I initially started writing this for @creativity-killed-thekitten‘s birthday, but then i didnt get round to finishing it until now. I know it is very late but hey, better late than never

Patton was sitting on his windowsill, warm blankets layered over his lap and a mug of hot chocolate steaming in his hands. The rain beat down on the window, and shook the trees with the sheer force of the water. Watching droplets stream down the cold panes of glass, he sipped his hot chocolate and sighed gently to himself.
He checked the time. It was only 4pm: the others wouldn't be back for another 2 hours.
He didn't like being by himself all day, and had tried to fill the long lonely hours with things to take up the time. He had made brownies and cookies, which were cooling in the kitchen. He'd cleaned all around the apartment, hoovering the floors and wiping down the surfaces. He'd tidied Logan's cluttered desk, taken all of the empty mugs back to the kitchen, and sorted the papers and notebooks into tidier piles.
He had ventured into Virgil's room, and opened the curtains and windows to let in some air, and had dusted all of the shelves and belongings.
And he had picked up all of Roman's clothes that we're strewn across the floor, putting them in the wash basket and washing everyone's things.
And then it had started to rain, so he had made himself his favourite rain-watching drink and had sat himself in his favourite rain-watching seat.
But it didn't feel the same when he was alone. And while he had tried to keep himself busy enough to outrun the loneliness, he couldn't help but let it catch up to him.
That's the problem with rain you see. It makes you think about things that you wanted to avoid.
The house seemed so quiet without the others around. Patton was used to someone always doing something. People talking or passionately arguing, in a friendly sort of way, or Roman singing or Logan ranting about the subjects he loved or the gentle hum of Virgil’s music playing in his room or so many other things.
But it was just him and the emptiness of the house. And the beating rain on the window.
Patton realised that tears had started to trickle down his face, slow at first, but then they started to stream more quickly, just like the rain outside. He couldn't hold it back, and sobbed. His crying fierce but silent, seemingly insignificant compared to the downpour outside.
Soon he had no more tears left to cry, and he leaned back against the edge of the window, tired. He put the empty mug of his hot chocolate down, and watched as the rainstorm calmed down slightly.
Gently closing his eyes, he listened to the regular beating of the raindrops, feeling the cold air from outside upon his face.
And suddenly his eyes shot open, his neck and back aching from his uncomfortable position. He jumped up. Only an hour until they would be back. Patton raced to the kitchen to put the cooling brownies and cookies into suitable containers, and started to wash up the bowls so that he could start making dinner. He wasn't going to have everything ready for them in time.
Burning his hands in the hot water, he frantically scrubbed, cursing himself in frustration. He had to be good enough for them. He scrubbed the largest mixing bowl before rinsing it and putting it on the drying rack with a thunk. He had to do enough to make up for the fact they were all doing important things while he was just at home. He tipped up the washing up bowl and the water sloshed out violently. Stupid Patton couldn't even be by himself for a day without feeling sad.
All he wanted to do was flop on the floor. All he needed was a hug, and a friend to talk to. But he had to do this for them. To show them that he was strong enough to cope by himself.
He started making dinner.

Roman put his key in the lock, and dramatically opened the door.
"Paaat-tonnn we're hooooome!!!!" He paused for a second but heard no reply. They shared a look, and then Logan shrugged lightly.
"Patton? Are you here?" His voice my not have had the volume and reverberation of Roman's, but Logan's voice was clearer.
A small mumble was heard from somewhere in the house.
"I'm in the kitchen."
Virgil rushed in first followed by the others quick behind him. Patton was sitting on the kitchen floor, three hot steaming plates of pasta behind him on the counter.
"Are you okay, Pat?"
"I-" all of them could see that he was fighting tears from falling down his face. "It- It doesn't matter." He forced his face into a smile. "I made dinner. It was gonna be a better dish but I fell asleep so I didn't have time. I just made pasta, I'm really sorry. You probably needed something really nice after a whole busy day of doing important things. But silly old Patton fell asleep. I'm really sorry. Don’t worry about me. Just enjoy your dinner."
"Hey, hey Patton it's okay! The meals look fit for royalty! And your presentation is incredible as always. But you're more important than dinner, Patton." Roman sat down in the floor next to Patton and lay his hand on his leg, gently stroking it.
Virgil slumped to the floor too, leaning Patton over so that his head lay on his shoulder. And Logan knelt down with them, carefully taking Patton's hand, holding it safe and secure.
And with that the damn broke. Patton took deep harsh breaths, sobbing into Virgil's shoulder.
"I just wanted-" tears were streaming down his cheeks, wetting Virgil's hoodie, "to be good enough for you." He paused, and gripped Logan's hand tighter. "But I couldn't even stand a day by myself." And with that he cried harder, so caught up in his apparent failure that he couldn't see the loving looks in his friends eyes.
"Patton look at me," Logan instructed. "You are already good enough for us. You don't have to make us dinner or-" he looked around the room "clean up for us to be enough. Because just by existing you are incredible. You make me happier than all of the crofters in the world."
Virgil put his arm around Patton, cradling his head in his chest. "We all love you Patton, we're truly sorry that we had to leave you on your own all day. It won't happen again."
"You are the light in all of our lives Patton, you truly are. And your empathy, and dependence on others is a good thing, not a flaw. You love everyone so much, and you make us, make me at least, feel special and loved and happy. Come on, let's get you up off of the floor." Roman jumped up, and held out a hand, which Patton graciously took.
Logan stood up, and then looked puzzled for a second. "Where is your dinner Patton?" He remarked, gesturing to the three plates on the counter in front of him.
Patton looked at the ground and muttered, just loud enough to hear "There wasn't enough pasta for 4 of us, and I wasn't very hungry so I thought I'd just skip out. I thought that you probably deserved it more than me, with the work from today and all."
"Now that isn't acceptable at all now is it, my prince? And anyone can see that you have been working just as hard us today.” He looked Patton in the eyes, with a face that could barely hold the love for his friend. “We had a lunch a little late, so I'm sure we'd be happy with a little less food, it's much better to share what we have than skip someone out."
Logan and Virgil set off replating the dinner, and Roman pulled Patton to the couch, gesturing for Patton to sit on his lap. Patton slumped down, sighing softly as Roman hugged him tight, before releasing slightly to rub his back.
And with that they sat down at the table, Roman never stopping stroking Patton's leg under the table as they ate. Patton smiled to himself, happy enough to just listen to the others talking about their day.
They were home safe and sound, with him, and they loved him after all.
