i'm still enjoying it, but i finally put my finger on 2 things that have been bugging me about this show. first: this is a show that does not care about logistics. it acts like it does, it has communications as plot points, and you see the ways mobile suits get around minovsky particles to communicate long distance with flares coming out of the finger, but it's so much less concerned with logistics than 0079 was. in 0079, in the first 2 episodes char loses 3 zakus. this is a big deal, and episode 3 is entirely dedicated to him restocking, while he gets chewed out for losing them and needs to prove the gundam is just that powerful. jerid's lost 5 mobile suits personally and they keep giving him new ones. it doesn't feel like the individual mobile suits represent many hours of labor, lots of expensive materials, and the cost of transporting them to the frontlines in the way it almost always did in 0079. there were a few exceptions, that one mobile armor char's crew sends out without telling him that he's just very confused by comes to mind, but mostly it stayed true to that.

in 0079 the first new mobile suit after the first episode is the gouf, which ramba ral has in episode 12. that upgrade is because he's being tasked by zeon high command with an important mission, and they know he'll need a more powerful mobile suit than the zakus that have failed so far. it's explicit that zeon is just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks with the mobile armors introduced in seemingly every episode in the back half, because they're in a bad position and need to get out of it. on the federation side there are 3, but all 3 are prototypes where they're trying to figure out what works. so when this show is at the same point and has introduced at least 2 mass produced suits for both sides, as well as like 4 or 5 other suits that aren't even the gundam, it feels so much messier. and when jerid can just keep breaking mobile suits with no results as a new recruit who's never accomplished anything it makes it feel like they don't matter and the titans are just completely incompetent. despite aesthetically being so much more hard scifi gritty war story, it's actually worse at that than 0079.

this was kind of stream of consciousness, but i hope that made sense. and i don't want to make it sound like i hate the show or anything, i just think the show aesthetically went one direction but the actual content went another. this show feels focused a lot more on kamille than 0079 did with amuro, and i really like it. the show just seems out of sync with itself, and i think that's partially because the showrunners aren't used to the kinds of demands placed on them here by bandai, so i hope they can start to tell better stories while still introducing more mobile suits. and the mobile suits are very good, as is the action generally. this might also just be something i get used to as time goes on, we’ll see

I love harsh and bleak worlds, especially ones I can change, because I have an "I can fix her" sort of mentality with those types of games, and find that sort of fantasizing very interesting. So, I decided to write up a plan to turn Kenshi into (somewhat) of a utopia. So without further ado, here is my multi-stage plan to (unethically) turn Kenshi into a utopia.Oh also, this is impossible to do in game.

Step One: Ally with the Shek.

The Shek may be a somewhat genocidal ethnostate, but they are the least bad of the three major factions in my opinion, and may cooperate with the plan, and if they don't, we can take control of their government fairly easily by challenging Esata to a battle and having Cyber Beep wreck their ass.

Step Two: Assassinate Holy Lord Phoenix, and imprison the high inquisitors(for their knowledge of the holy nation) and take control of the holy nation

The holy nation may not cooperate, but the shek are strong enough to distract the holy nation, and the anti-slavers and mercs can be used to quell rebellions. It is imperative to keep their mining equipment and farming equipment, and to minimize the casualties, though. We will immediately stop the war in the United Cities, and give them their dumbass land.

Step Three: Start slowly freeing slaves and discouraging discriminationWe can't shock the holy nation into a slaveless and diverse nation, we will have to slowly start passing laws around slavery until slaves can't be abused as much, and enough laws around discrimination so that a hiver can't just be enslaved for the crime of existing around stack. Also, once non-humans and women have rights and can work, so efficiency of the farms will increase quite a bit.

Step Four: Tear down the statue of Holy Lord Phoenix and free the slaves of rebirth

This may seem like a stupid decision, but to my knowledge, the only thing rebirth slaves do to my knowledge is build a big-ass statue and waste precious resources.

Step Five: Use the Resources from Rebirth to Encourage People to build farms

By giving people who start up farms tax cuts and free resources from the ruins of rebirth, we can get a lot of excess food, and also have less of a need for slaves, as well as giving jobs to people, so we won't have massive hordes of hungry bandits killing people and stealing their food.

Step Six: Settle in Shem

This will just boost the amounts of food and other resources we can produce massively, and will also make traveling shem a lot safer.

Step Seven: Start sell large amounts of food to the UC

Since we have an excess of food from our other exploits, we can most likely undercut the prices of the food produced by the UC, giving us plenty of cats in the process.

Step Eight: Build Outposts outside of the hiver villages.

This may seem stupid, but we can give lost hivers a place to stay, and also plenty of free labor and soldiers, which will come in handy later.

Step Nine: Wait for the UC to put tariffs on imports

Because we are undercutting the cost of food produced by the UC, the UC will probably start putting tariffs on imports, which may seem bad, but...

Step Ten: Use the tariffs as an excuse to go to war

At this point, we will be more powerful than the UC, with the more powerful holy nation and the shek kingdom on our side, and we can start a war with the UC.

Step Eleven: Assassinate Emperor Tengu and install a puppet governor

Little did Tengu know, but there was a skeleton crossbowman who had been waiting above his throne room for him to declare war, and immediately JFK his ass the second he does. The person who replaces Tengu will be a spy from our side, and will immediately surrender.

Step Twelve: Launch attacks against the slaver work camp

The combined forces of the three biggest factions will spell death for the slavers.

Step Thirteen: Abolish Slavery and make being poor legal again

Rather self explanatory, isn't it? Dissenters will be few and far between, due to the large amounts of freed slaves.

Step Fourteen: Reintroduce Garrus, Beak things, and Gorillos into the Cannibal Plains

Cannibalism is not a sustainable practice, as diseases can spread much quicker through eating people, and is therefore biologically discouraged. The cannibals would much rather eat animals than people, as it's coded in their DNA, and once they start eating animals, they probably will stop eating people. After this, we can start to socially reform the nation(s) we control, and are basically on top of the world.

Edit: Apparently Tengu is already a puppet, take control of the trader's guild and nobles, I'll elaborate further later.

I feel like... okay, how to put this.

This is a very common take, and I take it seriously when I see it from industry professionals, which Matt Braly is, but I'm also convinced it sort of misses the point that what we're experiencing is actually normal. Like its standard for any growth industry and always has been.

What's being missed here is that we're currently going through the transition from growth to stability, and that always results in what we're seeing here. It's not even unhealthy per se, except in the normal ways capitalism is unhealthy.

It is normal, desirable even, to set a lot of money on fire to try and grow your position in the market. This happens all the way up and all the way down, even unto the smallest of businesses. Someone who got a small business loan to start a pizza place, which really means they spent a ton of money they didn't have and went deep into debt in order to try and elbow their way into a commanding position and then turn a profit, has done, conceptually speaking, the same thing Disney+ or Paramount+ or just about anything anyone other than Netflix has done.

(Netflix is different. We'll come to that.)

In the case of a genuine innovation or market disruption (and yeah, "market disruption" has an actual technical meaning that most of the techbros going on about being "disruptors" couldn't find with both hands) where the previous equilibrium was knocked over, it's always the same, from cars to computers, from phones to fridges. There's an initial massive flowering of huge competition, from both new entrants who see an opportunity or established incumbents who want to keep being established. All of these guys will spend vast amounts of money making a vast amount of things, focusing purely on growth, not on profit. It is important that you have a plausible claim to eventual profit, but if you do it the other way and focus on profit over growth, you're going to get eaten alive.

Remember how many PC manufacturers there were in the 80s and 90s? And how the vast majority of them aren't around anymore? PCs were a new, exploding market. Everyone rushed to try their luck in it.

But there comes a point where the gold rush ends. The market matures. It fills up. Finding new customers gets harder. Old customers have established preferences and brand loyalty it is hard to shake them out of.

This is when you need to transition from growth to profit. And it's where the cannibalism starts.

The firms that had poor business models and were never gonna be profitable will die. Ones that ARE profitable will often look at what trying to continue to compete with the big boys will entail, and decide to take a buyout offer rather than fight like hell for years and years to try and secure their position with an uncomfortably high chance of going bust. (This is why you see indie game developers do things like sell themselves to EA or the Embracer Group or whatnot; the founders, quite reasonably, decide "we'd rather be millionaires NOW than we would potentially bankrupt in ten years.")

The product, whatever it is, will usually, although not always, become worse for consumers in some ways. It won't always become more EXPENSIVE, although that's common (a great way to drive growth is to sell your thing at or below cost, subsidizing the consumer), but there will be less of it and it will become more homogenized. That great burst of creativity and variety you saw when everyone was scrabbling for market share will die back.

And a lot of people end up getting fired, because you need way less people for "stable profit-generating enterprise" than you do for "growth growth growth."

That's the general case. What does that mean in the specific case of streaming?

Well, the first mover and still the biggest player in that market was Netflix. They more or less created the market. Netflix, for all we like to hate on them (and there's much to hate) are actually competent businesspeople. They produced a hell of service. Once that service got big they realized "other people are going to move in on this; there's too much money involved, you think the guys making TV and movies are just gonna let us keep making it?" So they transitioned from providing a service to also MAKING a lot of product themselves.

Netflix, by the way, has been profitable for years. For years. They burned a lot of money to achieve market dominance and then started making money. They're good at it!

Everyone else, though? They're still relative upstarts. They've spent the last five years burning through immense amounts of cash in order to establish themselves, and now that they are established they need to transition.

And that's bad for us, because the streaming era has actually been... real great in many ways! I've been using really abstract terms so far, but let me get concrete: in this context, "focusing on growth to build market share" has meant "the entertainment industry has spent SO MUCH money making SO MANY shows and movies and mini-series and events because they really want you to come and watch. Ideas that would have gotten you laughed out of the room in 2005, and a polite but firm 'no' in 2015, get an instant and immediate green-light, and they'll star the most talented actors in the world. Disney will do things like spend 25 million an episode to make Andor! They adapted Wheel of Time, which was widely considered to be unfilmable!"

Matt Braly might be right in a purely technical sense when he says "the glut of content has devalued the product." That's true. But again, that's the abstract term. What that means concretely is "these guys spent a lot of money making a lot of art, and that makes the art worth less financially."

But it still exists! It's there for you to enjoy!

Now, obviously, you cannot do things like spend 25 million an episode to make Andor forever. And so they're not going to. We're heading into a more rational streaming market where things have to, you know. Make money.

This was always gonna happen, straight up. It's difficult to conceive of a world where it doesn't, although the transition can be better handled. (And by "better handled" I mean "fuck David Zaslav.") But speaking for myself, I would rather vast piles of money were spent to make art, even bad art, than the many other ways our capitalist overlords could have spent them. Alpine look forward to racing those guys as ATR limit bites F1s top teams | 2023 F1 season

Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer says they are looking forward to taking on Formula 1’s leading teams as the series’ performance-balancing rules increasingly affect the competitive order. Under changes introduced to F1’s Aerodynamic Testing Regulations in 2020, the amount of development work teams may conduct using a wind tunnel or Computational Fluid Dynamics is restricted based on how high they finish in the championship. The champions receive the lowest testing allocation and the last-placed team gets the most. Alpine finished fourth in the constructors championship last year, meaning it can conduct more development work than Mercedes, Ferrari and champions Red Bull. However Alpine finished a long way behind those teams: Third-placed Mercedes scored almost three times as many points. Nonetheless Szafnauer believes that the combination of largely stable regulations and the variable ATR limits will help his team close the gap to their rivals. One, better valuations for the teams, which is helpful to have financial stability and financial health. And I think also the cost cap might bring the field closer together and have better racing. No we have this mini car company and we have tons of cars we have them already and we can put them in mini Las Vegas and you just one of these used car dealerships and just move it out there and they're called new mini cars. Who wants to do a laser light show and have a small sphere. Before the big one gets there he's going to put it he wants us to put a small one at 45 ft and say the big one is coming really and it's kind of awesome his ideas that you have a hotel inside it just like 20 rooms and you can see into the rooms you can see it and you can turn the ball off but most the time would be on so when you're inside you would see like the back of the image you can still see out though a little and you can have cameras so you can turn it to look like when it's actually outside without seeing it so it's kind of the illusion thing of a cloak it's a little more advanced now people want to get involved it sounds like a lot of fun so we're going to go ahead with this now all these ideas
