As someone with myalgic encephalomyelitis, formerly called chronic fatigue syndrome, whose fatigue is very impairing day to day, I have a major quibble with the first scale claiming that eating takes MORE effort than sitting up or WALKING AROUND.

I know everyone's experience is different, but that's really not true to my experience at ALL.

Dealing with moderate to severe fatigue every single day, it's much harder for me to walk around than it is to lie in bed and chew food, or even to lie in bed and speak. If you think about the muscles that are used in each action it might become obvious why one would use more actual physical energy than another.

Eating is necessary to survive, so for people whose fatigue is long term, it makes sense that many of us would find a way to accommodate that need at the expense of more energy-intensive but less directly survival-related behaviors like walking around. People who need feeding tubes specifically because of energy-limiting conditions like M.E. are almost universally 100% bedbound. Because if they could get up and move around, they'd likely use that energy to EAT instead.

This scale may be meant for people whose fatigue isn't permanent or perhaps whose fatigue is an emotional exhaustion rather than a physical lack of energy available to their cells. And even physical chronic fatigue patients experiences probably differ. So maybe I'm overthinking this, but for myself that top scale is not arranged in a way that makes any sense to me and it bothers me every time I see it.

so i didn't contribute monetarily outside esims, and general aid to pcrf and msf for almost 8 months into the genocide, partly bc giving to an individual gofundme seemed like making a choice between who deserved my sympathy but mostly because i felt really conflicted about giving money that would go towards lining the pockets of price gouging suppliers and egyptian border guards. the problem was that for the first 6 months i still saw something like the 2023 status quo possible wrt gaza, of international aid continuing to enter gaza but on a drip feed. but now i have conceded that the global left is not capable of helping palestine in any structured way and israel will let aid rot on the border and nobody will stop them. you might as well help the people you can.

i had an almost identical experience during the massive oxygen and bed shortages in new delhi during covid. initially, we donated to relief groups organising oxygen supplies, but then the infrastructure kept collapsing with no end in sight and the only thing you could do for people was help them pay the massive bribes being demanded to keep their families alive. we paid the bribe for my uncle and helped a school friend pay it for her father too.

if upon being told about someones illness/condition, your first thought is to say “have you tried X?” i want you to step back for a moment and think to yourself “if i thought of X after hearing about this condition for the very first time, the person who has this condition very likely has thought of this and possibly tried it already”

we are tired of constantly being told to try the same things by people who didnt know our condition existed five minutes ago.

you dont need to offer any solutions or try to fix us. i know it might seem like a polite thing to do or that it shows you care, there are other ways to show us you care.
