In fact, there is a sequence or list of ' wali-s ' who can marry her and in case the father wasn't capable of doing that, then it is the paternal grandfather, then the brother, then the half brother (from her father's side), then her father's brother, then her father's half-brother, then her paternal cousin (son of her father's brother), then son of her father's half-brother, then in case all of them are not available or they don't agree, then it's taken up to the Judge. However, we should consider alllllll the other options that you have before thinking of the worst case scenario, sis. Because even if your father wasn't the greatest man and you don't have the strongest relationship with him, you don't want to start this important chapter of your life on the wrong foot, by upsetting him more, or ruining your chances to fix things with him. It will only complicate the situation more. And keep in mind: it is not permissible to get married without a wali, as prophet Muhammad ﷺ said : There is no marriage without the permission of a guardian.

Now let's see what we are dealing with, I don't know the reasons why your father is having this position - but one can only imagine.. However, Islam is innocent from all these ideologies, interracial and mixed marriage were never a problem in Islam and Allah swt and his Prophet ﷺ never forbid nor advised against marrying someone from a different ethnicity. In fact, the Prophet ﷺ said : "When someone whose religion and character you are pleased with proposes to (someone under the care) of one of you, then marry to him. If you do not do so, then there will be turmoil (Fitnah) in the land and abounding discord (Fasad)."

So, if the only reason why your father is not approving of this marriage is that the potential partner is from a different ethnicity, then your father is in the wrong and he will be accountable on his part. But there isn't much you can do without his approval. So what can you do instead? Is there any uncles from your father's side? A grandfather? An authoritarian family member? Or your local Imam or someone that your father actually values and listens to that you can actually talk to? To convince him to at least give the man a chance? And yes your uncle from your mother's side could talk to the guy and get to know him and maybe then he could tell your father about his qualities and how he is in shaa Allah a perfect fit for you, but again, he can't marry you off.

Now, I am sharing with you the feedback of a sister who is Alhamdulillah in a mixed marriage, she has been thru your experience and is now Alhamdulillah happily married, may Allah bless her and her family : "I understand her pain. They're judging him before even meeting him.. I don't know if there's much she can do tho. I think it's most likely that her father needs time to get used to the idea. He didn't expect her to marry out of the culture, that's a hard pill to slick for a lot of elder people. The advice I can give is to give it time and pray for it. Intercultural relationships is almost normal for our generation but it isn't for the generations before us. We have to keep that in consideration.

Also, if her uncle gets to meet the guy, maybe he can tell her father how great he is especially when it comes to deen. And her mother knows her father the best, she can eventually also speak in on his mindset and make him see that he's wrong to judge someone he hasn't even met.

I pray that her father 'wakes up' and realizes that culture doesn't matter. The only thing that will bring them to jannah, is their deen, and alhamdulillah he's perfect for her deen-wise. May Allah ease their affairs and bring them together in marriage. ❤️"

In such cases, if someone does believe they have genuinely found someone suitable for marriage, whether from a different race/culture or not, and their parents still prove to be difficult, they should try to convince them with wisdom and tact, and take all appropriate means to make them see the merits of the decision.

Parents certainly have a right to be concerned about the future of their children, but since it is not the parents entering into the marriage, children also need to make sure they are not being forced into decisions that will adversely effect them in the future."

So if this marriage is facilitated for you, then it will happen, and if not, then it won’t. And in either case, there is wisdom behind this that you are not aware of, so you should pray salat al-istikharah for ease in this matter if it should be good for you. It is best that you take the path of benevolence and kindness in these kinds of issues and don’t rush things lest you aggravate the problems."

To conclude, my dear sister, I KNOW that when we are inn love/ or when we start getting attached to someone, we let our imagination run wild, we build hopes and dreams involving them, we want to be with them asap and we let ourselves get carried away, I know for a fact that you'd want to rush things and just get married to this guy and get it over with, I feel you, I relate to you, I understand you perfectly. But sometimes that's not how life works for a) there's Allah's timing for everything and b) there's Allah's plan for us. We think we are choosing and we think we are planning but it's just an illusion, at the end of the day it's only Allah's plan that works. That's why I pray that your choice matches what Allah swt has already chosen for you, and your plan confirms with Allah's plan for you. Please please please pray Istikhara times and times and times again, tell your guy to pray Istikhara as well, and sis, duāa is your only way out of this. Try to pray Tahajjud (night prayer) if you can, I heard a saying a while ago that anyone who has any need from Allah swt should never miss a Tahajjud prayer. In the quiet of the last third of the night, when everyone else is sleeping, just you and your broken words and you crying heart sincerely and humbling asking for Allah's help and guidance. It works miracles ✨

In shaa Allah kheir my dear, may Allah swt guide you, and bring what's kheir for you closer, and grant you what your heart is wishing for. May Allah swt have mercy on your heart and not allow it to be broken over this matter. Ameen. 🤍

عن جابر بن عبد الله السلمي، قال: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُعَلِّمُ أَصْحَابَهُ الاِسْتِخَارَةَ فِي الأُمُورِ كُلِّهَا، كَمَا يُعَلِّمُ السُّورَةَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ يَقُولُ ‏"‏ إِذَا هَمَّ أَحَدُكُمْ بِالأَمْرِ فَلْيَرْكَعْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مِنْ غَيْرِ الْفَرِيضَةِ ثُمَّ لِيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ، وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ، فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلاَ أَقْدِرُ، وَتَعْلَمُ وَلاَ أَعْلَمُ، وَأَنْتَ عَلاَّمُ الْغُيُوبِ، اللَّهُمَّ فَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ هَذَا الأَمْرَ ـ ثُمَّ تُسَمِّيهِ بِعَيْنِهِ ـ خَيْرًا لِي فِي عَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَآجِلِهِ ـ قَالَ أَوْ فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي ـ فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي، وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي، ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ، اللَّهُمَّ وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ شَرٌّ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي ـ أَوْ قَالَ فِي عَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَآجِلِهِ ـ فَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ، وَاقْدُرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ، ثُمَّ رَضِّنِي بِهِ ‏"‏‏.‏ صحيح البخاري حديث ٧٣٩٠

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: As-Salami: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) used to teach his companions to perform the prayer of Istikhara for each and every matter just as he used to teach them the Suras from the Qur'an He used to say, "If anyone of you intends to do some thing, he should offer a two rak`at prayer other than the compulsory prayers, and after finishing it, he should say: O Allah! I consult You, for You have all knowledge, and appeal to You to support me with Your Power and ask for Your Bounty, for You are able to do things while I am not, and You know while I do not; and You are the Knower of the Unseen. O Allah If You know It this matter (name your matter) is good for me both at present and in the future, (or in my religion), in my this life and in the Hereafter, then fulfill it for me and make it easy for me, and then bestow Your Blessings on me in that matter. O Allah! If You know that this matter is not good for me in my religion, in my this life and in my coming Hereafter (or at present or in the future), then divert me from it and choose for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me be pleased with it." ينبغي على المؤمنِ ألَّا يقصِدَ شي��ًا مِن دقيقِ الأمور وجليلِها حتَّى يستخيرَ اللهَ فيه، ويسأَلَه أن يحمِلَه فيه على الخيرِ، ويصرِفَ عنه الشَّرَّ؛ إذعَانًا بالافتقارِ إليه في كلِّ أمرٍ، والتزامًا لذِلَّةِ العبوديةِ له، واتِّباع سنَّةِ نبيِّه صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم في الاستخارة، والاستخارةُ طلبُ الخير في الشيء؛ ولذلك كان النَّبيُّ صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم يعلِّمُهم هذا الدُّعاءَ كما يعلِّمُهم السُّورةَ مِن القرآن؛ لشِدَّةِ حاجتِهم إلى الاستخارة في الحالات كلِّها كشِدَّةِ حاجتِهم إلى القِراءةِ في كلِّ الصَّلوات؛ قال: إذا همَّ أحدُكم بالأمر، أي: قصَد أمرًا ممَّا لا يعلَمُ وجهَ الصَّواب فيه، فليُصلِّ ندبًا رَكعتينِ، ثمَّ ليقُل: اللَّهمَّ أستخيرُك، أي: أطلبُ منك الخِيرةَ، وأستقدِرك، أي: أطلبُ القدرةَ منك أن تجعلني قادرًا عليه، فاقدُرْه لي، أي: اجعَلْه مقدورًا لي، أو قدِّرْه لي، وقيل: معناه: يسِّرْه لي، أرْضِني، أي: اجعَلْني راضيًا بذلك، ويُسمِّي حاجتَه، أي: يُعيِّن حاجتَه، مثل أن يقول: إنْ كنتَ تعلَمُ أنَّ هذا الأمرَ مِن السَّفر أو التزوُّج أو نحو ذلك. الدرر السنية

I have to make a hard choice about my future, and I'm feeling so lost in life.what can a person do to seek the help of god in this ? I'm new convert, and I'm still learning about islam. I'll appreciate your reply

Salamu Alaykum!

I’m really sorry for the late reply! When we feel lost in life, we feel so confused, abandoned, we feel like we’re everywhere but getting no where, hopeless, we feel scattered, always sad and we just feel ….. so empty. But I just want you to remember that this is a normal part of the human experience. Majority of human beings go through this at least once in their life and for many of us many many times. This is part of life because many of us will only appreciate His guidance when we’ve lived without it. Because only then do we eventually realize how much we need Him and how dependent we are on Him. Only then do we eventually realize we need to completely surrender ourselves to His Perfect Plan and Wisdom because He loves us more than everyone and anyone in this world could. And only then do we realize that everything that happens to us and will happen to us is wrapped in His Love and Mercy and is for the absolute best for us in our journey.

Know that Allah is guiding you, loving you, watching over you, planning the best for you, and listening to you right now. But here are some things you can do to get closer to Him and seek more of His help!

1. Ask Allah for forgiveness constantly and consistently throughout the day. Say Astaghfrullah (I seek forgiveness in Allah) all the time!There are tooooooo many benefits and blessings to this. It is said that it is a solution to every problem.

Prophet Muhammad said: “If anyone constantly seeks pardon (from Allah), Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide sustenance for him from where he expects not.”

Here are some other benefits (from source: BacktoJannah)

Istighfar (Astagfirullah) is the gateway of relief and happiness. 

Whenever you are in distress start reciting it and Insha Allah it will take you out of your anxiety and will put you in a peaceful situation and will give you happiness.

Istighfar removes anxiety and duas (prayers) are answered.

Istighfar opens the door of sustenance.

Istighfar opens the door of mercy.

Istighfar opens the door of knowledge.

Istighfar is a gateway of productivity.

Istighfar relieves you. When you feel that sadness within you, when you are disturbed and frustrated, and when anxiety surrounds you.

A man once came to al-Hasan al-Basri and complained to him: “The sky does not shower us with rain.” He replied: “Seek Allah’s forgiveness (say Astaghfrullah)”

Then another person came to him and said, “I complain of poverty.” He replied: “Seek Allah’s forgiveness.”

Then another person came to him and complained, “My wife is barren; she cannot bear children.” He replied: “Seek Allah’s forgiveness.”

The people who were present, said to al-Hasan: “Every time a person came to you complaining, you instructed them to seek Allah’s forgiveness?”

Al-Hasan al-Basri said, “Have you not read the statement of Allah? “Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Truly He is Oft-Forgiving. He will send rain to you in abundance; increase you in wealth and children; grant you gardens and bestow on you rivers.”” [Nuh (71):10-12]

All human beings are sinners and we’re all constantly making mistakes in life, but those who He loves most are those who humble themselves enough to ask Him for forgiveness.

2. Constantly make dua (pray) to Allah. Create that trusting bond with Him. Call on Him using His 99 names. For example if you feel lost you can say “Ya Hadi (The Guide), guide me!” or “Al Basit (The Reliever), relieve me of my anxieties and grant me peace!” And if you can try to, the best time to make dua is in sujood (when your head is on the floor during prayer) during the last part of the night (maybe an hour, 30 minutes or 15 minutes before fajr). During this time Allah descends down to the lowest Heaven and He answers every dua during this time. The peace that you feel during this time is sooo beautiful and just indescribable. 

“The Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when one-third of the night remains and says: ‘Who will call upon Me, that I may answer Him? Who will ask of Me, that I may give him? Who will seek My forgiveness that I may forgive him?’” 

“The dua made at tahajjud is like an arrow that does not miss its target.’‘ 

**Also you can definitely make your prayers in english or in whichever language you speak, you don’t need to say it in Arabic or anything like that!!

3. There is a specific prayer called istikhara and it’s used when you are confused about making a decision and need guidance on an issue in your life. All you do is pray two rakats and then when you’re done praying you say this prayer. Allah 

“O Allah, verily I seek the better [of either choice] from You, by Your knowledge, and I seek ability from You, by Your power, and I ask You from Your immense bounty. For indeed You have power, and I am powerless; You have knowledge and I know not; You are the Knower of the unseen realms. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me with regard to my religion, my livelihood and the end of my affair then decree it for me, facilitate it for me, and grant me blessing in it. And if You know that this matter is not good for me with regard to my religion, my livelihood and the end of my affair then turn it away from me and me from it; and decree for me better than it, wherever it may be, and make me content with it.”

Allah will make clear to you the path/ choice you should choose or He will add blessing to whichever choice you eventually do choose. If you don’t have time to pray two rakats (you’re short on time and need to make a quick decision) then there’s this dua you can make anytime and anywhere. 

“O Allah choose and select for me the better of the two things!”
