for this chapter, we're back on Terra there's a frost we're in the POV of Wyntor, who I have talked about before so the big spoiler about him may be known to you, alas what's known at this point is that he's the aide of Malcador

the section before this was talking about how pretty it used to be

a short wyntor description

he has escaped the palace he is consumed by terrible truths

but even thinking about this guy's name would let him know (i mean it's Malcador, so, fair enough) most people would have been caught before this point, but not Wyntor, who studied the architecture of the palace extensively every thought brings back a negative Malcador memory

RIP Wyntor, it was another one of Dorn's changes Wyntor thinks bitterly about how he should have known

it's Rubio, the former Ultramarine psyker i mean he's still a psyker, just not an Ultramarine

there's a bit of background on Rubio, about how he used to be an Ultramarine librarian, then the Edict, now he's secret agent man and you know apparently i found out that in one of the short stories garro somehow made it past the ruinstorm to ultramar to recruit this guy and they got back there's something psychically odd about Wyntor

he's a blank except he's the weirdest blank Rubio's ever run across and doesn't feel the same as the others

Wyntor talks about the coming horrors and Rubio flashes back to the Vengeful Spirit which - I didn't think he was on that team I guess i just forgot lol

unfortunately, Rubio says Malcador's name and then Malcador appears, as Wyntor says he can't deal with this any more Malcador apologizes (!!!!)

Rubio reaches forwards to stop him but Malcador stops him and Rubio thinks about how it's a waste Malcador: that ship has already sailed Rubio internally: if his value was so trivial then why was Malcador so focused on him?

Malcador: don't you have somewhere else to be? and now it's time to move along to another one of Malcador's band of merry Astartes this time an ex-World Eater and an ex-Emperor's Children Emperor's Child? what is the singular anyways they hate each other it doesn't answer my question as to whether or not the WE has the nails but i'm guessing he does also this is the very first psyker EC I've ever run across his name is Ison ftr so what are these two up to

so some people are saying this is due to horus' shadow in the immaterium pressing down on terra

Ison, have you considered that power does not require intelligence or wisdom

okay it's nurglites they're fighting something ominous is coming dun dun dunn okay, as much as i don't like the subplot on terra, this bit isn't actually bad and of course Captain Cardboard arrives to save them time for some simping

okay so all the parts re: mortarion are "intervals" but the ones on terra with garro are "chapters" i see how it is here

i understand the impulse people have of writing fics where their most hated character gets violently killed

but let's get back to blorbo

Mortarion can recognize Typhon has changed in some way but regardless there's no one else Mortarion would rather have with him as they go attack Terra he flashes back to the last time he tried to attack the house of a "father", though the text is very vague on what happened he's going to do it RIGHT this time Typhon decides now is the time to ask for a favour so he wants Mortarion to travel to Terra with him in the Terminus Est and not in the Endurance because it will heal the divisions in their legion, he says it's against protocol but whatever, screw protocol

even here we can't escape uwu garro uwu

yadda yadda they finish killing Ynyx and leave but on the planet…something stirs not something alive

at this point Swallow gets to indulge in his love of describing spaceships and listing them to his credit he takes two pages to say what would have taken McNeill 5-7 and now they're off! into the warp

mortarion decides to be #edgy and keep it open for a bit longer, ignoring the various regular humans going crazy behind him and getting killed

the only one not affected is Typhon Mortarion has a flashback to the last time this happened also he knowssss it's the warp doing this and now it's flashback time and time for Mini Mort

okay so our intro to the Barbarus of Mort's childhood is via a description of a conflict between Overlords and man does this whole thing seem very familiar to the Imperium of 40k the parallels are pretty obviously deliberate i mean

look at this lol so this one Overlord is burninating the countryside because he's petty which no one who matters (i.e. other Overlords) care about until he starts burning land with value to them

Sky:I feel like the repeat of this theme across 30K and pre-Imperial worlds in general creates the impression that the Imperium never even ended the Old Night/Age of Strife, just perpetuated it. Honestly unsure if it's intentional

i am not sure it's intentional on Swallow's part, given how he gives one of the more positive leaning depictions of the Emperor time for Mini Mort to show up he and his golem minions well er i guess they count as minions come across this one Overlord killing a bunch of trapped humans who are called "the lessers" so what does Mini Mort look like

(he's breathing in the chemicals) not so mini Arzach: Ye we don’t get to see his early childhood. maybe because half the book is wasted on Garro

Sky: is he cute guess not bluejay: what, you don't think slenderman grim reaper teenage boy is cute?

mortarion wonders (sadly) what it would be like to taste the air of the valleys but of course his father forbid him from going down there and meeting the humans also we get some details about his horrifying childhood

Arzach: Oh I didn’t catch this detail. He is using a falchion here. In Lantern's Light, the Emperor wanted to give him a falchion but he refused. Props to Swallow for that.

he's got a black powder pistol so mort's always gone for the blade + pistol thing huh mortarion waits and watches as the other Overlord's monsters eat the poor dude alive this whole thing is a test for him by his dad to see if he's got a non-brute force solution oh huh, interesting, i forgot about this

Arzach: Yes. It’s often forgotten but Morty is an alchemist.

the revenants swarm him mortarion then uses the "hit a mf with another mf" method after his gun runs out of bullets and clubbing proves ineffective

he wins vs them of course but then a human spider monster comes lolloping out of the clouds he tries his "throw corpses" method at this new foe but it proves about as ineffective as the gun club and then it snaps his sword whoops

RIP it does successfully cut through the limb holding him down at least so he's able to get up and yep Necare shows up and his first words are "boy, you disappoint me"

we'll have to save the overlord description for next time!

Blind Channel on kiertänyt kolmen viime vuoden aikana Eurooppaa ja Pohjois-Amerikkaa ja tehnyt yli 300 keikan lomassa kaksi levyä. Nyt yhtye jää määrittelemättömäksi ajaksi tauolle niin keikoista kuin muista julkisista esiintymisistä.

– Kiertueet ovat määritelleet jo pitkään koko vuoden kulun. Tuntuu aika huikealta, kun kalenteri ei ole ihan tukossa. Suomen kevättäkään en ole nähnyt kolmeen vuoteen, laulaja Niko Vilhelm Moilanen naurahtaa.

Blind Channelin jäsenet eivät pidä kuitenkaan taukoa musiikista. Yhtye haluaa nyt uudistua ja palata samalla juurilleen.

– Etsimme uudenlaista soittamisen iloa. Viime vuosina olemme katsoneet, minkälainen musiikki pärjää maailmalla ja menneet itse samaan suuntaan. Oman sydämen kuunteleminen on unohtunut hässäkän keskellä, pohtii Moilanen, joka toimii myös yhtyeen pääasiallisena biisintekijänä.

Blind Channelin nousu kohti kansainvälistäkin kuuluisuutta alkoi vuoden 2021 Euroviisuissa, joissa se sijoittui Dark Side -kappaleella kuudenneksi. Samassa rytäkässä yhtye herätti ison saksalaisen levy-yhtiön kiinnostuksen, mikä avasi monia ovia.

Moilanen toteaa, että julkisuudessa Blind Channel on saattanut hahmottua varsin suunnitelmallisena bändinä.

– Käytännössä asioita pikemminkin tapahtuu ja tilanteisiin pitää sopeutua. Teemme hirveästi hommia, kohellamme ja sykimme joka suuntaan. Välillä 99 juttua epäonnistuu, mutta yksi onnistunut juttu vie asioita eteenpäin.

Kokkolassa syntynyt Moilanen muutti jo pienenä perheensä matkassa Ouluun, jossa hän kävi sittemmin Madetojan musiikkilukiota. Eräissä kotibileissä hän tutustui samassa lukiossa opiskelleisiin Joel Hokkaan, Joonas Porkoon, Olli Matelaan ja Tommi Lalliin.

– Olimme siihen asti hengailleet eri porukoissa, sillä heillä oli rokkijuttuja ja itse tein räppäreille biittejä. Huomasimme, että me kaikki rakastimme Linkin Park -yhtyettä, joka yhdistelee rock- ja metallimusaa sekä hiphop-maailmaa.

Moilasella ei ollut kynnystä siirtyä räpin maailmasta rokkikuvioihin. Hän kertoo halunneensa aina kuulua bändiin.

– Minua ei oltu huolittu mukaan, koska mihinkään bändiin ei oltu tarvittu räppibiittien tekijää, hän naurahtaa.

Oraalla ollut Blind Channel sen sijaan tarvitsi niin biisintekijää kuin monipuolista laulajaa.

– Yhtyeen nimi taisi olla minun keksimäni. Laulun osalta Joel kantaa päävastuun kertosäkeistä, itse olen enemmän esillä, kun tarvitaan huutolaulamista, räppiä tai popimpaa laulua.

Moilasen alkuperäinen instrumentti on klassinen piano ja ennen euroviisukuvioita hän opiskeli musiikkikasvatusta Oulun yliopistossa. Moilanen on gradua vaille maisteri.

– UMK- ja euroviisuvuosi oli aika tiukka. Päivisin suoritin siviilipalvelusta seurakunnassa, ja iltaisin olin hulluilla keikoilla tai pyörin haastatteluissa. Euroviisujen jälkeen latu oli auki ja gradu jäi.

Nyt edessä on runsaammin vapaata ja Moilanen harkitsee opintojen saattamista loppuun.

– Annoin joitain vuosia sitten myös yksityisopetusta pianonsoitossa ja laulussa, ehkä palaan niidenkin pariin. Tai sitten teen valmiiksi kirjan tai sarjakuvan, joita olen jo työstänyt pitkälle.

Moilanen aikoo satsata myös riittävään lepoon ja tehdä asioita rennolla otteella.

– Viime vuodet ovat olleet korkean sykkeen aikaa hyvässä ja pahassa. Nyt olen huomannut, että biisejä saa tehtyä ja keikkoja vedettyä yhtä paljon, vaikka asioista ei stressaakaan. Aion tehdä jatkossakin hommia rauhallisella sykkeellä.

Moilasen mukaan Blind Channel palaa, kun aika on kypsä. Yhtye aikoo nauttia soittamisesta ja tehdä uusia biisejä ilman aikatauluja.

– Dark Side oli aikanaan biisi, josta koko bändi oli ihan fiiliksissä. Uskon, että jossakin kohtaa syntyy jälleen yhtä innostava biisi, joka näyttää meille tietä.

Moilanen says that in the public eye, Blind Channel may have come across as a very methodical band. - In practice, things tend to happen and you have to adapt to situations. We're working hard, we're pushing and pulsating in all directions. Sometimes 99 things fail, but one successful thing moves things forward.

Born in Kokkola, Moilanen moved with his family to Oulu when he was a young boy, where he later attended the Madetoja Music High School. At a party at home, he met Joel Hokka, Joonas Porko, Olli Matela and Tommi Lalli, who had studied at the same high school. - Until then we had been hanging out in different groups, because they had rock stuff and I was making beats for the rappers. We found that we all loved Linkin Park, a band that combines rock and metal music with hip-hop. There was no threshold for Moilanen to move from the rap world to the rock world. He says he always wanted to be part of the band. - I wasn't considered for any band because there was no need for a rap beat writer," he laughs. Blind Channel, on the other hand, needed a songwriter as well as a versatile singer. - I think I came up with the name of the band. Joel takes the main responsibility for the choruses, but I'm more present when it comes to shouting, rapping or poppier vocals.

Moilanen's original instrument is classical piano and before the Eurovision Song Contest he studied music education at the University of Oulu. Moilanen has a Master's degree pending. - The UMK and Eurovision years were pretty tight. During the day I did my civilian service in the church, and in the evenings I was at crazy gigs or hanging out at interviews. After the Eurovision Song Contest, the stage was set and the graduation was over. Now, with more time off ahead, Moilanen is considering finishing his studies. - Some years ago I also gave private lessons in piano and singing, and maybe I'll go back to that too. Or I might finish a book or a comic book, which I'm already well into. Moilanen will also focus on getting enough rest and doing things in a relaxed way. - The last few years have been a time of high pulse, for better or worse. Now I've noticed that you can make songs and play gigs just as much without stressing about things. I'm going to keep on doing things with a calm heartbeat. According to Moilanen, Blind Channel will return when the time is right. The band plans to enjoy playing and making new songs without a timetable. - Dark Side was a song that the whole band was really into at the time. I believe that at some point another song will come along that will be equally inspiring and show us the way.

A Mario Obsessed Person's Ramblings on the New Mario Movie Trailer

Here's my thoughts/analysis on the trailer! It's kinda long-winded...

Okay so off the bat let’s talk about the parts before the trailer itself.

The put a lot of praise on Anya (and imo it seems warranted); They seem very confident that she’s done super well with playing the character she’s supposed too in the right way (I know they did same some similar things about Chris Pratt but I think she’s definitely doing better.)

Seth’s bit had me rolling a bit because his entire segment is exactly what Chris Pratt wanted his to be; Seth talks about how he’s loved Nintendo for ages, but actually makes more obscure references (+ gets his facts right) and presenting actual evidence in the form of his (very cute) dog Zelda. Plus he doesn’t seem to hesitate nervously.

But, I digress, going into the actual trailer—

I’m loving this interpretation of where the original Donkey Kong games fit into the lore. It manages to harken back to the “stage play” of Mario Bros. 3, and gives a pretty good reason for how it all fits together.

I’m very curious about the larger setting. At first I thought it was Sarasaland (or maybe the temple from Origami King), but evidently it’s the kingdom Donkey Kong comes from (Donkey Kong’s Country?). Which, as far as I know, isn’t really a concept that’s been explored—we only know like, a couple dozen Kongs in total, but this shows a few hundred at least.

Is Cranky Kong the ruler of this kingdom? Or is he just preceding over the matches in the coliseum? I’m not as well versed in the DK side of Mario lore, but he’s usually just the parental figure in most games, right? He’s definitely never been the ruler.

Why are Mario, Peach, and Toad (evidently the three-man band of the movie) here? Is this some kind of negotiation? Mario puts on a show for the citizens and then he’ll provide them with something they’re after?

Pauline is shown in one of the posters, I wonder if she’s somehow still connected to DK in some way?

Moving onto the Next scene—assumably this is inside Bowser’s Moving Castle we are familiar with from the first trailer.

I find it interesting that Koopa’s are the main troop shown—it’s not a weird pick, but I expected more Goombas than the eight (I counted) total shown in this shot. But I do appreciate the diversity of troops shown regardless; Koopas, Red Koopas, Paratroopas, Goombas + a Goomba stack, Buzzy Beetles, Swoops, Spinys, Priahnah Plants, Bob-Ombs, Sledge Bros, and Shy Guys, and even a Snifit! 

Also a big fan of all the personality in this shot—The animation style really works.

I’m not gonna make this about Bowuigi I swear

I’m loving the characterization we’re getting here.

Luigi’s still his generally nervous self, but I appreciate that he seems to be holding it together better than he does in some of the games. He’s going along with listening to Bowser’s monologue and trying to avoid saying anything that would upset him. 

Bowser’s motivations surprise me a bit just because it doesn’t seem to be related to kidnapping Peach at all—and, as we see, she definitely isn’t kidnapped (seems like Luigi is filling the damsel role instead). He just wants to rule the world. Pretty stereotypical for a movie, and not a new thing for Bowser by any means, but still interesting none the less that they didn’t go the classic mario route.

I assume the magic around Luigi is Kamek’s doing—the blue and pink color scheme and the fact that Kamek isone of the only major magic users at Bowser’s disposal (and the only one we know is in the movie thus far).

Bowser seems to think being a human (not a Homo Nintendonius or whatever) is significant enough that it’s part of the reason for why Mario and Luigi should know each other, so wherever this is, it’s likely not somewhere on Earth, or at least our Earth. So what does that mean for Peach? She’s human, right? How’d she get here?

I love every Toad in this shot! Their bowties are so cute. There are Peach’s advisor’s right?

Unsurprisingly, with how inconsistent Mario geography is, this looks like no existing world map from any of the games. Though that doesn’t mean there’s nothing of note!

We’ve got most of what looks like a classic set of world themes here;

Lava/Bowser’s Kingdom at the top. Not much to make out other than the grounded Castle that on the north side.

The Snow Kingdom, where the penguins were. Now taking on more of a Bowser-fitting appearance, only recognizable from the small sliver left open and the shape of the now-burnt castle. Is that actually what that kingdom looks like now? Bowser really left a mark.

The jungle kingdom. It looks like Bowser’s headed that way next. That temple looks very significant—the head looks like it could be a Koopa… or a Yoshi? Maybe that’s the new iteration of Yoshi’s Island? There’s only really on brief shot that shows anything that could be there, and it does only have Yoshis in it, so...

The one to the right of the mushroom Kingdom looks like the athletic/sky themed location. This one does get shown later, I’m pretty sure, in the scene with the Cheep Cheep near the end. Not much else to say.

Lastly, the Mushroom Kingdom. We all know the Mushroom Kingdom. Peach’s castle looks pretty standard, though the huge water feature behind it stands out quite a bit. The Mushroom Kingdom also seems quite sizable compared to the other kingdoms as well.

Notably, there seems to be a lack of space for a “Water Level” themed kingdom, unless the beach on the Jungle kingdom is meant to be that?

Is it a controversial take that I like Peach’s design a lot? It’s obviously re-stylized for the movie, but it still pretty close to looking like her! That’s her jumpsuit from the Kart games, right? Or at least something pretty close to it?

The paintings in the background obviously give 64 vibes, though I doubt they’ll be used in that way… maybe?

All the shots of the interior of Peach’s castle are very pretty, too. Love the color scheme a lot.

Toad’s weapon of choice being a frying pan is very funny. I wonder if they’ll give a reasoning for why this specific toad is relevant/unique.

The toads are wonderfully expressive! I’m falling in love with the animation style very fast. (Also look at the Green one’s face. Look at it.)

This. Is. So. Cool. It such a fun concept.

I wonder if they’ll bother to explain the whole “how does everything float” thing or if that’s just gonna be a part of the world.

This shot is also just really pretty. All of the location design is very faithful to the series, and manages to find a pretty damn good middle ground between all of the games without it seeming disjointed.

The gag in this scene is very Illumination-esque, but I’m not mad about it. At least it’s not toilet humor.

That courtyard is so pretty! It does kinda beg the question how anyone gets up or down from there easily, but that’s probably just a floating platform thing.

Toad Town (or at least, I assume it's Toad Town because it's in front of Peach's Castle) being up the front of the cliff is a very fun design for it too.

I couldn’t get a good shot of it, but the undersides of the mushrooms remind me of Super Show! which is not something I expected to get reminded of in this trailer.

Obsessed with this design. They kept the shape but managed to actually make it look like a flower instead of a plastic toy. Is that a whole field of them in the background? Are they native to a specific place?

That’s her 3D World fire flower design for sure. The transformation using the fire effect is very cool.

“There’s a huge universe out there. With a lot of galaxy. They’re all counting on us.” There’s no way this isn’t a reference to Galaxy. Is Bowser’s plan large-scale? The flying castle kinda fits with that, but Bowser’s castle being able to float isn’t exactly exclusive to that series.

It’s the bois!!!! Look at them!!!

Where is this?!?!?! It doesn’t really look like anything I’ve ever seen in a Mario title, except maybe Bowser’s Kingdom in Odyssey, but that’s clearly not what it is.

The ‘tubes’ look very similar to Kamek’s magic from earlier…

The fact that this is shown during the “Whole Universe” quote does feel like it’s significant too.

DK joins them at some point. Was that why they were competing in the first scene?

As far as I can tell with all the Kart-focused shots, all the other riders are also Kongs. I was hoping I’d be able to spot some other cameos, but unfortunately not.

Final Thoughts

First, I’ve gotta quickly address Mario’s voice, and… I honestly hate it less than I did in the first trailer? I think? Maybe I’m just getting used to it. It kinda doesn’t even sound like Chris Pratt in some of the scenes, plus we do get some more classic Mario lines (“Wahoo!” and “Let’s’a Go!”). He’s far more expressive than he was in the first trailer.

Obviously, it’s still not quite Mario, but in the context of the other voices, it honestly kinda fits. (I’d still rather it not be Chris Pratt at all, of course, but I’m starting to think the clips they gave of his lines in the first trailer we’re just unfortunate choices.)

Past that, I honestly think this looks super good. The small references, all the details, it all gives me faith that Shigeru managed to shake something good out of Illumination. It really does seem like they’ve put a whole lot of care into making the story interesting without it just being the Standard Mario Package™, especially with the bits and pieces from various games (Classic Donkey Kong’s level design, Karts from Mario Kart, etc… there’s even a shot with the turn-blocks that replace bricks in Super Mario World!). The animation, the voice acting, it all seems amazing.

April 7th can’t come soon enough.

Ok, I have a hard time truly limiting this to a few answers and I am answering this question way too often. I just can’t pick a few favorites.

So I’m going to make a bit of a MASTER LIST and will update this list as I feel is necessary for people who really want to know what my tastes in music are. I have too many artists I enjoy for different reasons.

Spiritbox is a fave ever since I’ve seen a gifset from Holy Roller someone posted here and I decided to check it out :D Belcarra and Blessed be are probably my faves by them.

Anna von Hausswolff has amazing songs! I love Track of Time so much! Anna and Myrkur also did a cover of All is full of love by Björk! I love their voices so much together, I’ve been crying like a baby while listening to the song for the first time. (Speaking of collabs Myrkur and Chelsea Wolfe’s Funeral??? 🖤🖤)

Gosh I love music so much! I keep remembering some awesome bands and songs so I’ll drop them here if you or anyone else are interested in checking them out 🖤

Brutus - a completely random discovery but also love at first listen: War and Sugar Dragon are amazing, I recommend the live versions because these guys are mind blowing. Progressive rock.

Kalandra - their sound and vocals are magical! On their website it says they’re an alternative Nordic pop but there’s lots of folk-y elements as well. My fave songs are Lullaby and Not some fairytale plus their cover of Helvegen. 

Eluveitie - folk metal band but they have some heavier stuff as well. Aside from regular instruments members also play violin, bagpipes, harp, hurdy-gurdy. An absolute fave by them is Rebirth.

Vermilia - a recent discovery of mine, a pagan metal vocalist from Finland. Description from her Bandcamp: Her music is a mix of Epic Scandinavian Pagan Metal and sweet, raw and melancholic vocal harmonies with lyrics in her native language.

Trees of Eternity - a slow-tempo doom metal, really beautiful and melodic with the wonderful Aleah Stanbridge on vocals 🖤 I seriously can’t recommend them enough, favorite songs: A Million Tears, Broken Mirror and Gallows Bird.

SKÁLD - (desc. taken from their website) Through their music, SKÁLD take inspiration from the poetry of the ancient skalds who sang and told stories of the Vikings and their gods. Their music is characterized by singing in Old Norse and the use of ancient instruments including shamanic drums, talharpa, jouhikko and more.

LOR3L3I - is a solo project from Draconian’s vocalist, Heike Langhans. It’s a dark electronic music with Heike’s haunting vocals.

ISON - another one of Heike’s projects. Inspired by Drone, Black Metal, Goth & Shoegaze, combined with a deep fascination for the astral planes and the universe.

Aside from the artists mentioned above I mostly listen to melo-death, black meat, pagan and folk metal, folk music, doom metal, symphonic metal. Music is a huge part of my life and it’s my second favorite thing after playing video games. I love discovering new bands and genres. The more unusual the better 🖤

I slowly stirred from my sleep, my body waking up before my mind. I can hear three loud knocks coming from my hotel door. I sat up, looking down at my pillow, realizing very quickly it was not a pillow.

It was Colby. Shirtless.

When did he take his shirt off?

The three knocks came again. I groaned softly, rubbing my eyes as I shimmied out of my bed. I stumbled over to my door, unlocking it and opening it somewhat widely.

“Good morning!” Smitty smiled brightly.

I shook my head, surprised. “Oh, hello. Good morning to you, Smitty.”

“I just wanted to let you know that breakfast has been made. Do you want me to go tell Sam and Co-” His voice cuts, his eyes staring behind me.

I cocked my head to the side, glancing over my shoulder quickly. Colby’s body had moved around on my bed, his naked back now turned to us.

I felt a blush rise to my cheeks as I turned back to Smitty. The embarrassment faded immediately by the look he was giving Colby. His face was cold, the smile he had once had was gone. Frown lines had settled into the corners of his mouth. His eyebrows were low, darkening his eyes.

“I-is everything alright?” I mumbled, barely being able to look at him.

He cleared his throat, suddenly his face relaxing. He still seemed upset, only masking it. “I’m fine. Tell your friends breakfast is ready. Deb is here too.”

He abruptly left, leaving me stunned.

What the fuck just happened?

I exhaled, not even noticing I was holding my breath in the first place. I quietly closed the door, locking it instantly.

I walked over to Colby’s sleeping figure. I got back into bed, my face close to his.

“Colby?” I whispered.

His nose twitched as he let out a sigh. A groan left his mouth, signaling he wasn’t asleep anymore.

“Breakfast is ready. I’m gonna go wake up Sam.” I spoke lowly.

His head moved slightly, sort of nodding. “…mykey… ison table.”

I smiled softly, looking over Colby to see his key on my nightstand. I got and grabbed it, leaving my room quickly and walking over to Sam’s.

I knocked, hearing no movement from inside. I slid the key in the hole and turned, opening the door and walking in.

Sam sat on their bed, headphones on. Most likely, he was editing. He turned his head to me, his eyebrows raising. “Hey Angel.”

“How are you already awake?” I chuckled, sitting down on the bed.

He shrugged. “I’m always the first one up. Colby usually sleeps in when we go places. Why are you awake?”

“Smitty knocked on my door and told me breakfast is ready. Apparently, Deb is here too.” I stated.

“Cool. I’ll be down in a minute. Just trying to finish up this last cut.” Sam replied, pointing to his laptop.

“Editing first thing in the morning?” I asked.

He nodded his head. “All in a day’s work.” I got up and started to leave. “Oh wait, Angel?”

As a reached the door, I opened it. I turned back to him. “Yeah?”

“Is Colby in your room?” He questioned.

I sighed. “Yes.”

“Did he sleep there last night?”

“Yes.”

“Did you two-”

“No, Sam. We didn’t fuck.”

“I was gonna say slept in the same bed. Where’s your head at?” He inquired, shaking his head.

I rolled my eyes and raised my middle finger up at him. He smirked and looked back at his laptop. “Hey Colby.”

I jutted around to find Colby standing next to me, rubbing his eyes with one hand while his other hand held his shirt. “Sup bro…”

“I’m gonna go get changed. Meet you guys at breakfast.” I said, looking down at the floor and leaving quickly.

Sam and Colby had decided to leave immediately after breakfast. They wanted to do one last XPLR trip before we left this town. Apparently there had been some abandon mall not too far from town that they wanted to see if they could get into.

I believed they just wanted to get out of here after the awkwardness that was breakfast.

Deb did most of the talking, Smitty only saying all of two words to any of us. He seemed cold towards all of us. I don’t understand why he would have been.

Maybe he just wants us to leave…

As I laid in my bed, I pulled out my camera. I realized I hadn’t filmed this whole trip and needed to make some content while the boys were out.

“Hey, what’s up you guys. Angel here. As you can tell I’m not in my apartment. I’m actually on an XPLR trip with Sam and Colby. We are up in Washington in a small town. And we’re staying at, get this, a haunted bed and breakfast. I think we have finally lost it.” I laughed.

I stood up from my bed, slowly walking around my room. “Let me give you a tour of my room. There’s this really pretty bay window, which I wished I had used more. A little vanity and a dresser. And a little chair in the corner. Now, the bed is pretty sick. It is so comfy and honestly makes me want to sleep all day.”

I jumped onto my bed, giggling as I did. “Oh, I also have this really cool ceiling fan.”

I pointed my camera up at the ceiling. As my camera focused I on it, a red dot flashed.

What is that?

The flashing dot was coming from inside a grate above the fan. I zoomed my camera in, trying to see what it was. I couldn’t tell.

I cleared my throat. “Sorry about that. I don’t know what that is, but, let me go show you guys Sam and Colby’s room. You’re gonna get a kick out of it.”

I smiled at my camera and left my room. I pulled Colby’s key from my pocket and opened their door.

“Now this… is the lovers suite.” I smirked, turning the camera towards their room.

The walls were pink, and all the furnishing in the room was a dark, sexy red. They had a same set up as my room. The difference is they had their own personal bathroom; which was also red themed.

“This really does not help the Solby rumors.” I cackled.

I ran and jumped onto the heart-shaped bed. It was a lot firmer than mine, making me groan when I landed on it.

“Oh my God, how are you supposed to have sex on this if it feels like a futon?” I asked, rolling my eyes.

I glanced up at the ceiling fan, seeing the same vent as before. I slowly zoomed my camera in, seeing the flashing dot too.

“What… the fuck is that?” I mumbled.

I turned off my camera and stood up on the bed. The ceiling was low enough that I could stand on the bed and be somewhat closer to the vent. I stared into the vent, trying to focus on what the flashing dot could be.

Is that a c-?

Suddenly a loud crash ripped through the silent bed and breakfast. I pulled my eyes away from the vent and jumped off the bed, closing the door behind me and rushing downstairs. The noise sounded like it was in the kitchen.

White chipped glass from a broken plate were scattered all over the floor. Smitty stood on the other side of the kitchen, looking around at the floor.

“Be careful. I dropped a plate.” He stated, sighing.

“I can see. Where’s your broom at?” I asked.

He pointed behind me. I spun around to see the broom hanging on a hook. I grabbed it and started to sweep.

Smitty shook his head. “You don’t need to do that.”

I shrugged, still sweeping. “I don’t mind helping.”

“Oh… well thank you.” He paused, turning back to the dishes he was loading into the dishwasher. “I didn’t get a chance to ask you. How was the ghost hunting last night?”

I chuckled. “Um… it was interesting to say the least.”

“Did anything happen?” He inquired.

“We used the Ouija board, something talked back.” I replied.

“That’s spooky.”

“Yeah, and we heard a loud bang before you came in. Also, the spirit said goodbye to us before we got to say it.”

He smiled. “Unbelievable. That’s so crazy.”

I pulled the dust pan from the wall, placing it on the floor. “It was. Honestly, I don’t know if the fans are gonna believe us.”

“Who knows? Were you scared?” He questioned.

“Me? Petrified is the nicest term to use. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to this.” I picked up the dust pan and dumped the glass into the trashcan.

“What do you believe in, if you don’t mind me asking.” He stopped loading items into the dishwasher.

“I believe in God. When I’m at my most scared, I try to pray to Him. I think me and God have a good relationship, as weird as that might sound.” I responded, smiling lightly.

He turned to me, an indescribable gaze falling over his eyes. “I don’t think it’s weird at all. Do you believe in angels?”

“Yeah. I mean, I kinda have to with a name like Angel.” I smirked.

A pause fell over us as we stared at each other. I turned my back to him and placed the broom and dust pan back on their hooks. “Oh, I wanted to tell you again that your writing is really good.”

“Thank you, but I have to disagree. I wrote those so long ago, I don’t think they’re any good.” Smitty said bashfully.

“But they are. Seriously. I mean, if you really think they’re not good, you could always start from scratch or even just flush out the stories some more.” I explained.

“Did you finish the Angel and Demon one?” He leaned against the counter.

I nodded. “Yeah. Very eerie and kinda gory towards the end, but it was so cool overall.”

He smiled softly. “Well I’m happy to know someone enjoyed my writing.”

“I did recommend it to Sam and Colby to read before we leave.” I informed.

“Oh, since you brought them up, I have to ask. Does Colby know you like him?” His smile changed into a smirk.

“Um… I-I’m sorry?” I stuttered.

He laughed. “You don’t gotta be prude about it. I can see the way you look at him that you like him. It’s the same look other couples have given each other here. I have a lovers’ suite for a reason, you know.”

I mumbled. “I-I haven’t told Colby how I feel about him.”

“Why not?” Smitty cocked his head to the side.

I groaned quietly. “It’s complicated for a number of reasons.”

“Does he not like you back?” He crossed his arms lightly.

“Sam told me he does like me, but I don’t believe him.” I answered.

“Why’s that?” He stepped closer.

I furrow my brows, the air in the room getting hard to breathe. I rung my hands a couple times as I felt my face start to flush. I could feel myself step back.

He held his hands out in front of him, taking a step back. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked. I know that might be a lot of information to give to a stranger. I apologize.”

“Uh, it’s okay. I’m just not good talking about my feelings if I’m honest.” I stammered.

He remarked, pointing at me. “Maybe it’s time you open up. You should say what you feel before it’s too late.”

“Maybe… maybe I’ll tell him when we get back to California.” I halfheartedly joked, leaning against the fridge.

“So on Tuesday?”

“Actually, we’re leaving tomorrow.”

His eyes widen. His voice dropped the cheery tone he once had. “Wait, that’s so soon.”

“Yeah. We all figured that we got everything we needed and don’t really need to stay until Tuesday.” I announced.

“But you guys haven’t explored a lot of the house.” Smitty noted.

“I mean, Sam and Colby said they have enough footage so I’m kinda just following them.” I stated, shrugging my shoulders.

“I thought you were a leader, not a follower.” He hissed, turning fully to me.

I stood straight up. “What’s that supposed mean?”

He sighed, annoyed. “It means nothing. I think I’m gonna go… go lay down. I’ve been up for a while.”

“Oh… okay.” I uttered.

He headed out of the kitchen, disappearing into the lobby and going down into the basement.

I shook my head, confused. I walked out of the kitchen and headed into the library, closing the door behind me.
