SO BASICALLY Bombay Dreams is an Andrew Lloyd Webber-produced musical that first opened in the West End and then on Broadway a few years later (early 2000s, this all happens 2002-2006). He got some solid South Asian folks to work on it, like AR Rahman, Farah Khan, and Meera Syal (but it did not have a wholly South Asian creative team). Chaiyya Chaiyya from Dil Se is a part of the show (so is Ishq Bina, Rangeela Re, Manna Madurai, Shakalaka Baby, Sona Nahi Na Sahi, and Nahin Samne... all from their respective movies). It also went through changes as it crossed the Atlantic Ocean. Up until Shoba Narayan was in Great Comet, Bombay Dreams was the only time there had been a South Asian lead actress on Broadway.

As for the plot, it was changed multiple times, but part of the plot at one point was that it deals with the changing of Bombay to Mumbai, and a poor guy that lives in a slum who falls in love with a rich girl (who! is! engaged!) whose father is a Bollywood director.

It's half jukebox musical, half original songs.

I recall finding a source that mentioned how Farah did not feel like Bombay Dreams was very representative of South Asian identities and experiences, and thus, on a piece of Andrew Lloyd Webber's letterhead, Om Shanti Om was born :)
