Finding out that S/O was previously suicidal

[ SCENARIO ] [ Shouko, Ishida ]
[ A silent voice / Koe no Katachi ]

I had read something like this in the past and I absolutely loved it!! This kind of things had helped me a lot in the past so i really hope i'm able to help someone else with this!
Shouko Nishimiya
Even for being in a relationship with Shouko she normally doesn't pry for personal details about you, she won't force you to talk about things you don't want to talk about or things about your past, she prefers that if you to tell her something personal is because you feel comfortable enough to do so (and she does the same), she may just be a little pushy when it comes to problems that are bothering you in the present but aside from that she doesn't insist much
Shouko suffer from a really bad self-steem, blaming herself from a lot of things due her condition, and she had wanted to die for a long time (probably all her life), however she slowly wins more things that make things worthy to stay and continue trying, one of those things is you
Shouko may probably tell you about how she have those suicidal thoughts (or even if she doesn't have it anymore) at some point, it probably take her a while since she probably fears your reaction (not that she doesn't trust you, she just doesn't want to bother you or you to be worried over her), but it would take her even more time if she already had her suicidal attempt since in that moment she had caused even more troubles
If you open up before her it would be easier for her to tell you. When you open up to her about it she will be pretty nervous by seeing you so serious or even nervous, while you start telling her about it she will probably get the idea of what you are meaning if you don't say it directly but at the same time she doesn't want to assume
When you tell her she is between not being sure of what to tell you and wanting for you to feel free to tell her all you need and vent, she will try to comfort you by saying that she understand you and is more probably that in that moment is when she open up too (if she already told you about it she will just remind you of that). Even if you don't feel bad or insecure about it she still wants to reasure you that is okay, she understand and that you aren't alone
Shouko is really happy to have you in her life, you had become so special for her that she is even grateful to have you in her life and that is something that she repeat to herself constantly because it makes her happy, and now, because she knows that once in the past you wished to be dead she tells you from time to time how happy she is that you are still here and that she is grateful to have you in her life (even when saying it out loud make her really flustered)
Shoya Ishida
It will take a while to get into a relationship with Ishida because he doesn't know much what he is supoused to do or say, but it isn't imposible. When it finally happens that you two start dating Ishida is really curious about you, he wants to know more and more about you sincerely (even before start dating) but he doesn't know if it is right for him to ask or if he is being rude by asking, so he tries to either don't even ask or do it indirectly
From his part, Ishida had been suffering from suicidal ideation for a long time and he was about to do it if it wasn't because he get the opportunity to try and make it up for his past mistakes, he knows really well what is like wanting or even thinking that it would be better if you die. Although is more probably that he won't talk about it once you two are together, even since you were friends he tried his best to be a good friend even when he didn't know what that was supoused to mean
If he ever tells you about it is because you two are having a heart to heart talk and it just slips his lips while telling you about his past, otherwise is more probably that he won't tell you about it (or at least not first)
In the case that you are the first one saying it, either because you want to say him directly or because you feel comfortable enough to tell him, Ishida will be completely shocked by it, it never crossed his mind that you will ever wish death, he was a terrible person in the past and he thought that he deserved to die, but you? In his eyes you are nothing but an amazing person and he doesn't see why, he may say it without thinking much on it but will apologize
Ishida wants to know more about it, if you let him of course, he wants to know from where it came this feeling and is more likely that he will share his own feelings about it and admit that he wanted to be dead once too
He may not tell you right away in that moment, or just say it like a simple comment, but later while thinking on it Ishida will relice how important you are to him and how greatful he is to have you in his life (even if sometimes he feels like he doesn't deserve you), so he plans to express it to you the next time he had the opportunity, even thanking you for not giving up in life because that way you two were able to meet, probably end up being a flustered mess but he really wanted to let you to know

A Silent Voice
A Silent Voice is an exceptional anime that displays the complexities of bullying and personal growth. Shoya Ishida was a bully in the past but is now looking to make amends with the deaf girl, Shoko Nishimiya, that he made fun of in elementary school. The guilt finally overtook Shoya Ishida, leading him to isolate himself from society. Guilt is something everyone feels in their lifetime, but the intensity of it all can either ruin someone’s life or change that person for the better. Shoya, however, thought so poorly of himself, he believed he was unworthy of forgiveness or friendship. In the film, people have X marks all over their faces, which reflects the symbolism of his deep sense of self-loathing and distress. The Xs portray Shoya’s inability to connect with others and how it is extremely difficult for other people to fully heartedly trust him. A Silent Voice conveys how guilt and redemption are part of the human experience. As I stated previously, everyone encounters some form of this in their lifetime. Whether it is through a simple lie or ruining something for someone else, we all endure it.
A Silent Voice addresses issues in Japan and globally relevant concerns, particularly in areas of bullying and social isolation. In Japanese school systems, bullying is prevalent and linked to severe consequences such as social withdrawal and even suicide. Mental health is another struggle that is amplified by self-hatred and suicidal thoughts as it is difficult for many Japanese people to find help for psychological distress. This film reflects these ongoing issues in Japan of depression and social anxiety due to cultural expectations of perseverance.
I can relate to this anime through the lens of bullying. In elementary school, one of my best friends was getting bullied daily by the same group of girls who loved to pick on her height. She was much taller than everyone else she grew to be 6’2 today), and the constant teasing made her feel out of place and self-conscious. Similar to Shoko in A Silent Voice, my friend struggled with self-esteem and questioned what was wrong with her when there was nothing wrong at all. Today, my friend is a successful D1 basketball player and embraces her height by surrounding herself with supportive people. Half of the group of girls today have reached out to her, either apologizing for their past behavior or attempting to reconnect as if nothing happened because of my friend’s current social status.
In this module, we learned about the different solutions fiction presents for discrimination and their onus of change. A Silent Voice presents various solutions for discrimination through the character’s journeys of growth and redemption. Change begins with individual accountability and the anime highlights the importance of communication and societal support in overcoming discrimination.

a silent voice (2016)
The beauty of A Silent Voice has to be it's characters. Every single character had flaws and dimension, and it shows through the smallest of details. Everyone feels real and human, and that's what makes this movie spectacular. What really brought me to this conclusion was the scene at the bridge where Ishida is consumed with guilt from his past and he picks off everyone from the group by targeting exactly what will make them hurt. One by one, you are introduced to their ugly sides. Even the characters you barely met show so much depth, and it makes the scene so impactful because you realize how observant Ishida is.
I feel like in most media, bullying is pretty black and white. Usually, we don't see the kind of complexity that the film brings. Usually, the bullying seems to magically stop as soon as the main character puts their foot down, or retaliates in some way. And sure, sometimes we do explore the bullies and their home lives, and realize that they may struggle with issues too. Hurt people hurt people and whatnot.
A Silent Voice takes everything a step further. We are shown past the ending, where the bully - SINGULAR - seems to get what he deserves. He's outed and punished. But wait, there's like the rest of the movie left? That's when I was hooked. We see that Ishida was not the only one that should have been blamed. While Nishimiya was getting harassed, it was the people that watched and said nothing that were just as culpable. Heck, even the teacher was just as bad, and only spoke up when Ishida presented himself as a scapegoat. The real conclusion is that bullying is a failure of everyone around the victim. A collective failure of the community was allowing Nishimiya to tolerate abuse after abuse.
I really enjoyed the visual of how Ishida views people, with X's over their faces. His point of view where he avoids people's eyes and tends to look off to the side was unsettling, because you realize this is how he lives, cutting everyone off in order to stew in the guilt he's been feeling for all these years. He lives denying himself any self respect or acceptance, and prefers to blame himself for what happened in the past. Nishimiya already forgave him in the beginning, but it was time for Ishida to forgive himself; a powerful message in this anime. It was only when he could forgive himself that the X's of those around him fell, which I think is really beautiful. Self acceptance didn't come externally, but internally.
There is so much more to this movie, but overall it is so fantastic with it's character work and stunning animation.

A Silent Voice its an anime movie based on a manga of the same name that, while many might look it like a romance movie, its mostly about redemption, overcoming trauma and social anxiety, facing and living with your past, and the true meaning of friendship.
I was impressed with how they handled the trauma and agnst parts to the point that they are relatable and make the characters feel human and realistic especially from the trauma victim's point, like how Shoya looked at everyone with an X on their faces. And i found the sign language interesting, even if its the japanese sign language.
The hardest parts for me to watch were the bullying scenes, who am i kidding no one likes to see a child go through that, even in movies. And some kids can be that cruel in real life too, and i know because i have an aunt and uncle who were teachers and were relieved when they retired since let me tell you their students were the hardest to handle, one even stabed my aunt in the hand with a pencil.
And it also bothers me that the teacher didnt even did something to stop the bullying almost as if he didnt notice or wasnt part of his job, it even reminded me of the middle school teacher of Izuku Midoriya from MHA, only that there it was a bit worse.
The thing that hooked me in my mind the most was the friendship part of the film. Especially the former friendship between Shoya Ishida, Kazuki Shimada, and Keisuke Hirose. These three were the balanced trio: the Daredevil, The Carefree guy, and the Comic Relief. And were the main bullies of Shoko Nishimiya. But then things took a twist when Shoko's bullying was brought up by the teacher and the people who Ishida thought of as his best friends put the blame on him in order to save themselves from punishment due to apathy, cowardice and fear, and acted as if they were never his friends to the point that they even bullied him and turned him into a complete outcast and loner, with Kazuki being his main bully, in fact he makes the most appearances than Hirose. This character hooked me the most, who knew a star student and carefree guy could turn out to be so cold, cruel and blind to his faults, like in his mind he didnt do anything wrong. Talk about trials and bad situations showing someone's true colors. From my pov, the bullying he and Hirose put Ishida through was even worse than the one Shoko went through. And even in Middle School he still made his life difficult by telling everyone of his bullying and left him with absolutely no friends at all, making him drown even more in his trauma, loneliness, and guilt over his past actions and their consequences.
It also made him wonder what friendship even was because he didnt know what that was anymore after he lost all hope of reconnecting with his old friends. He explained that he only understood them because they always did what he thought they would and wanted them to do, but after that and his changed thoughts and feelings he doenst even understand them anymore, especially after learning from Naoka that they rescued him from the river but only because it was the right thing to do rather than wanting to make up with him, especially because they didnt seem to change after that and even told Naoka to not tell Ishida and mind her own business.
Naoka is what many would say "the love rival" in this film due to her one sided love for Ishida and jealousy towards Shoko and seeing her as a threat to her feelings for him, even putting the blame of what happened to him on her and that if she had never rattled them out or even went to their school Ishida wouldnt have gone through that hell and lost his friends. They called it one sided because of her feelings towards him but without considering his feelings and choices and doing stuff more out of her own benefit and self guilt for what she did in Elementary school. Especially her desire for things to being back to what they were before, mostly Ishida's old friendships due to her (failed) attempts to try to make them meet up and reconciliate.
Honestly i admire her hope for those three making amends, but just like Ishida learned to face and be at peace with his past, she needs to learn and accept that things will never be like they were before and that some relationships cant easily or never be mended by "locking two people in a room". She cant rush or force those three to be friends again by setting encounters between them, this is a step they need to take on their own choice and will, and if they are even willing to make amends and are willing to change or not, just like she "forced" herself to change and made a peace truce with Shoko. And also follow the "advice" Shimada gave her to "mind her own business" because in a way their issues and broken relationship aren't something she should meddle with even if she only wants help, and he told her the same when he told her to keep quiet about them saving Ishida from the river so neither she got her (false) hopes too high or Ishida getting the wrong idea. Some people and things just never change.
While the films ends in the Cultural Festival and doesnt include the film arc, the manga shows what happened after that and ends in chapter 62 at the time for the Coming of Age Ceremony which its like a school reunion convention, and ends just as Ishida and Nishimiya open the door to their elementary school reunion ready to face their painful past , which may includ etheir old classmates and possibly teachers, together as equals. We dont know how that might had turned out, fans can only imagine what could had happened, the most probable, if the classmates had matured or moved on/ forgotten the past or not, that everyone could have stared at them for a moment in a bit of shock before minding their own business with their friends and family and maybe get a few stares or whispers or just being ignored. We dont know if he encountered or interacted with Kazuki( if he managed to come from studying in France and Ishida even asked for his email t see if he would come so he could talk to him) or Hirose, whom we saw a glimpse of him entering the room with his wife and child and whom we dont know much about due to his few appearances in the story (honestly i think he has more chances of having matured and changed than Kazuki and who knows if the river accident did affected him somehow) or if they are even worthy of his forgiveness, but even if he manages to confront, talk, and make peace with them or not its ok, because he gained even much more true friends than the ones he lost and wont have to worry of confronting his past and the challenges ahead by himself and living a lonely life ever again. And after a long timw since elementary school, he finally found peace, happiness, and love.

A Silent Voice
The film, A Silent Voice, follows the story of a boy named Shoya Ishida. While in elementary school, Shoya bullied a deaf girl named Shoko Nishimiya so badly to the point where she ended up transferring schools. After this happens, Shoya ends up becoming ostracized himself, struggling with feelings of guilt and social isolation. Years later, Shoya attempts to redeem himself by reconnecting with and making amends with Shoko. As the story progresses, the characters attempt to navigate their emotional wounds while exploring themes of bullying, mental health, forgiveness, and self-worth.
A Silent Voice discusses the difficult concepts of mental health and social isolation. These issues are prevalent all over the world today, particularly in Japan where suicide rates are noticeably high. Shoya’s struggle with guilt and self-hatred is shown by his want to isolate himself from others, symbolized by the “X” that he mentally places over people’s faces. This is reflective of the psychological toll that bullying can have on not only the victim, but the bully themself. Shoya’s journey of redemption is also reflective of the real world, highlighting the importance of support, forgiveness, and general acts of kindness.
The film also introduces the idea of discrimination based on disability. Shoko is treated differently and bullied in school for no reason other than that she is deaf, highlighting the societal tendency to alienate those who are different. Her peers fail to communicate with her effectively and do not attempt to understand her or her situation. As a Type 1 diabetic, I have experienced similar feelings of isolation due to a medical condition although not as extreme. I was never explicitly bullied for my diabetes, however it did not feel great being left out during a class pizza party or when one of the other students brought cupcakes to share on their birthday.

Helping and showing support to his deaf twin sister

[ ONE-SHOT ] [ Shoya Ishida ]
[ A silent voice / Koe no Katachi ]

This was requested by @the-letter-horror-lover thank u so much for requesting this, I love it soooo much
aaaaahh I love it!!!! I had a lot of fun while writing this, even when I was just thinking on how to write I was already in love with it 😩 I really REALLY hope you love it as much as I did ❤️

When your mother, Miyako, found out that you were completely deaf she was worried but she quickly become determinate to help you, you are her beloved daughter and she isn't going to let this afect her or you. Since the start she was putting all his effort to learn sign language and teach it to your siblings, your sister learn it but she teach you to lip reading too since she is kinda lazy (Miyako doesn't like it too much but at least it will help you) while Shoya were having some troubles with how do it properly and decided to just give up
Since you and Shoya are twins you two are the same age, that is why Miyako tried to make him be close to you and help you the most, she wasn't trying to force him she just wanted for you two to have a close relationship as the siblings you are, the problem is that Shoya was been a really energetic boy, for him having to help you was a burden and just prevented him from going to play with his friends like he wanted, that is why he tried to be as far from you as posible, even avoiding to say that you two are related if it isn't completely necesary
Even when you two were in the same school it was strange to see the two of you to together, Miyako constantly scold him for it but he didn't care much
One day a little girl came to the school, introducing herself as Shouko Nishimiya and saying that she is deaf was the straw that broke the camel's back for Shoya, he had enough with you but now this new girl too? He was starting to feel irritated, he couldn't do nothing against you since you are his sister but Shouko isn't related to him, so that is why he starting bothering her so much
In the other hand, you shyly and yet quickly approached to her and become her first true friend, you ofer her your help since you two were deaf and you were already used to the school, for what she was grateful. You two were almost all the time together and made things more bearable for each other, saddly that doesn't stop Shoya's bullying towards her and things just continue like that, Shoya and the others bothering the two of you while you tried to help Shouko at the best of your habilities
Until one day they finally break and start a fight that lead Shouko to leave the school and Shoya to get into serious troubles, everyone in the classroom turned against him to save themselfs while you didn't say anything, not to affect him but not to defend him neither, will someone believe you if you say something anyways? Also, you were already used to Shoya saying that you were just a burden so you prefer to don't step in and don't cause more troubles
After that event Shoya started to get more and more lonely as the time pass, it hurt him but he understand what is happening, he even understand why you don't want to interact with him again, he totally does and yet he wants to apologize, as the time pass he understand that he had done wrong and he hate himself for that, he hate himself for what he had done to you and to everyone
Shoya tried to talk to you again, he wanted to make it up for all those moments he called you a burden or look down at you for being deaf, he wants so bad to be able to be a good brother for you but between the memories of the past hunting him down and the feeling of don't even being deserving of your forgiveness your relationship doesn't improve much. Shoya spend some time without knowing what to do and yet in secret he started to learn sign language, he had even enrolled in a special school to learn
He never though this would happen, he wanted to do things right but he never thought he will have the opportunity to see Shouko again, he doesn't think he deserve the opportunity but he can't stop himself from trying to apologize to her
After seeing her again he started to win a little more hope, maybe he has the opportunity to do things right, but at the same time after this meeting you seem to be seeing him pretty wary, like if you were trying to find out his true intentions, Shoya tried to ask you what is wrong but you never answer him, you even just ignored his question
Shoya didn't know, but after some time after everything that happened in elementary school you met Shouko again, and as if time had not passed you two quickly become close friends again, what slowly lead the two of you to start a relasionship. Shouko trust you enough to told you when she saw Shoya again, she was troubled by this and Yuzuru conviced you that this wasn't something good so you wanted to make sure he won't plan on doing something against her or you again
Shouko nor you haven't talked about your relationship with Shoya and adding that he were trying to get closer to Shouko has been making you feel a little anxious, you just don't want for her to get hurt again, both had been trying to heal from what happened in the past together really hard, both have being improving slowly and you don't want to all of that to break
You were so busy thinking in all of this while walking home that you forget to put attention to were you were walking, since you know the way home from memory you were confident but you end up bumping with some old ladies from your neighborhood, you were just about to apologize when you reconize them, mom is always complaining about how they always getting into what they don't care about and causing problems
You were just about to bow as an apology when one of them start talking, complaining about how you had to be more careful and how you were so irresponsable when the other lady interrupt her saying that she shouldn't spend her saliva since you can not hear anything she says, then they started to laugh at you for being deaf, calling you names and making jokes about you being useless apart from irresponsible, you were reading her lips and completely understand all that they were talking about you (they do it without caring about you with the excuse that you can't hear them)
You didn't want to be disrespectful by going away but you had enough of them, already angry and a little affected by their words you were about to go when they changed the subject, one of them mentioned that she had saw you with another girl before, you were taken aback by her words and yet, without being able to fully process it, they started to talk about that now, saying that your seem to be more than just friends and start calling you two weirdos or even disgusting, laughing at how non of you seem to be able to talk properly and making fun of you and your relationship, even saying that you two are probably together because no one else will be willing to be with you
You were too shocked by what they were saying, this is just what you wanted to avoid! You were fearing that your brother will react this way if he ever find out about your relationship but it seems like anyone will react like this, you can feel your legs trembling for the anxiety and the tears almost falling from your eyes when something happened, the old ladies stoped for a moment before saying some apologies looking behind you, is someone trying to defend you? The only person you know that would do something like that is Yuzuru, but what she would be doing here? You turn around to see and become completely shocked when you see that the person behind you was your brother Shoya
He looked angry and he was talking pretty quickly and irritated but you were able to understand that he was scolding the women, he was telling them that they shouldn't talk like that to her sister and he was even demanding an apology! He was pretty intimidating but you weren't scare, you still didn't come out of your initial shock yet, the old ladies quickly apologized to you, deeply apologize for saying such things about you before running away and yet you couldn't fully process it since you were still shocked for what it was happening
Shoya say something to himself about how he was really pissed off for how they treated you while watching them run away, and almost like if someone hit him into reallity he quickly turned to look at you with a worried and nervous expression, asking you if you were alright and if they didn't hurt you with sign language, he look truly concern by your safety and your lack of answer just make him even more nervous, he doesn't remember when was the last time he had a proper conversation with you so he start to feel like he has done doing something wrong
The thing is that, even when Shoya started to change so long ago you never expected for him to stand up for you like this, you didn't expected to see him this worried about you, and even when you were afraid that this may be some kind of trick or just being anxious about trusting him you can't help but want to trust on him, you want to this to be real, and, finally, your tears start to fall from your eyes
Shoya panics the moment he see your tears and quickly ask you whats wrong, but in the inside he is blaming himself, but before he can do something else you hug him tightly and continue crying, he was shocked but at the same time he feels amazing, he is confused but a part of him feels like he is finally acting like a good brother, a little hesitant Shoya put his arms around you, trying to provide you comfort and let you cry all you want
After you finally calm down Shoya ask you once again if you are fine and if you two can talk, this may don't be the best time to do it but it feels like a good opportunity to do so, taking a deep breath Shoya start telling you how sorry he is for all he had done and how he wants nothing more than become a good brother for you, one that you can be proud of. Its up to you to trust him right away or not, either way he will completely understand
After you two return home he will be thinking a little about what the old ladies had told you and is then when he realice that they were talking about you possibly having a partner, he wants to know but he doesn't want to pry (specially since you two are just starting again and he doesn't want to mess it up)
It could be that he manage to gain the courage to ask you or that he find you with Shouko one of those days that he goes with her to the bridge, either way he wants to talk about this in private and he is pretty shy and nervous while asking you, when you tell him that Shouko and you are actually a couple he is really happy, he remember how good friends you were in elementary school and how you always looked happy whenever you two were together, he wants to know more and he wants to shows you his fully support, but he is still scare about messing things up with you, so he just express how happy is that the two of you are together and that you two are a really cute couple (he is going to show his support by indirect ways because he is scare of saying the wrong thing)
After you tell him about your relationship with Shouko he ask you if won't mind accompany him to feed the fishes with him whenever he goes to see Shouko in the bridge (he is being a little awkward since he doesn't know if he is doing wrong or is alright)
When you accepted and go with him Shouko and Yuzuru will be pretty surprised to see the two of you together (since they know the story of the two of you), you didn't wanted to tell them what happened with the old ladies since you didn't wanted to worry them but at the end is Shoya who tells them the story as an accident when Yuzuru teasingly (and yet wary) asked what he had done to become your friend, and after he tells the story Yuzuru and Shouko immediatly asks you if you are alright and if they didn't hurt you, and why you didn't tell them anything about that (to what Shoya will be shocked and will apologize later since he didn't know you wanted to keep it as a secret)

Media Analysis: A Silent Voice
Back to back with these powerful films, but just like Wolf Children, A Silent Voice is another jam packed movie full of emotion, tackling different issues this time, such as bullying, mental health, disability, and more. These issues transcend cultural boundaries as no matter where you look, some form of bullying is happening; someone out there is struggling mentally, and so on.
This film first caught me off guard about how it portrays bullying. The sound design helps boost the raw emotional turmoil of Shoko Nishimiya's bullying from her classmates, where most of it is coming from Shoya Ishida, the main protagonist. Bullying in Japanese schools is a widespread issue that leaves long-lasting scars, and this film perfectly portrays how bullying can have lasting effects. These effects could even lead to increasing youth suicide rates. However, bullying is nowhere near exclusive to Japan. Around the world, many are bullied for their disabilities, like Shoko, who was shunned and faced discrimination, leading the school to intervene after she switched schools due to the relentless bullying and the stealing of her expensive hearing aids.
As A Silent Voice continues, Shoya, as a teenager, faces intense guilt for his actions as a child. He becomes isolated in his new school, unable to make contact with anyone else. The film places a literal "X" on everyone's faces to symbolize Shoya's social anxiety and depression. This symbolizes how guilt and shame can consume a person: Shoya's overall internal battle with himself.
Shoya struggles to make amends with Shoko as he doesn't believe he deserves the forgiveness, and throughout the film, even taking her to a festival, he can't bring himself to forgive himself entirely. On the other hand, Shoko battles her own demons. On the exterior, she appears very cheerful, but inside, she feels like a burden to others, even attempting suicide in the later parts of A Silent Voice, believing the world will be better without her. Although Shoya does save her, this scene is a reminder that although some can appear strong, they may be suffering on the inside.
By the end of the film, Shoya opens up to others, symbolized by the Xs on people's faces falling off. Past mistakes can never be undone, but healing is possible through understanding human connection.
