Earlier in the invasion I made a post pointing out that Shinji of all people had asserted himself into a leadership role for the surviving Court Guards, and many of you pointed out how much sense that made, given his age and experience not just as a Soul Reaper but also as leader of the Visoreds. And we see it again here! Kyoraku is holding down Lille, and Nanao is heading right back to him, so it's left to Shinji to put things in perspective for his fellow Soul Reapers, and remind them of their duties.

He does this by invoking the memories of Ukitake and Yamamoto, which is interesting in its own way-- on the one hand it's a pretty obvious way of appealing to authorities he knows his troops will respect, but in another way it really is meaningful for this former exile to claim the legacy of the last generation of Soul Society's leaders.

Captain Iba breathed deeply in, quivering. He adjusted his pose, straightened his back and lifted his chin, trying to be as solemn as he could.

That was a momentous day, the lieutenant he chose to run the 7th Division with him was about to be formally introduced to the whole council of Captains and lieutenants of the Gotei 13.

He knew he chose wisely and his candidate had all the qualities needed to fill that role. He knew that was the best pick for the Division and that she would've been accepted and appreciated, with time. But still…

“Please. Please don't strike a pose.”

Iba’s hands were sweating, like a whole lot. His stomach clenched in a grasp of anxiety and preventive shame.

As petty as it might have sounded, he hoped she was also shy and nervous enough not to make an entrance.

The whole elite of the Gotei 13 gathered in that most respectable hall to greet their newest member and it would've been really hard for Tetsuzaemon to explain that whole “Boom baby” pose she had practiced for the whole morning.

Another deep breath while those few seconds stretched out like centuries of uneasiness in Captain Iba’s perception of time.

He quickly gazed over the expressions of his esteemed peers and subordinates. He was mainly concerned about Captain Kuchiki, Soi Fon, Hitsugaya. Maybe Muguruma as well. They were the most serious and straight-up officers in the room and more likely to be scandalized or offended by his new lieutenant’s… effervescence.

On his side though, he had a bunch of Captains that might have actually liked her: Captain Kotetsu was already a lieutenant when Iba’s pupil was in the 4th and Isane always spoke lovely words for the girl. Captain Hirako was weird enough on his own to be in the position to judge. But the real game changer would've been the General Commander Kyoraku who would have certainly loved her. None of the lieutenants really worried Iba about that, they were all pretty chill and yeah, maybe Ikkaku would have frowned but still, there were Hisagi and Rukia to back Iba up. Those two were the lieutenants who notified his candidate that she was chosen to fill their same role in the 7th Division.

Hisagi in particular had the chance of meeting the new lieutenant in the past, when he used to visit Captain Komamura with Tousen and even after that and seemed to like her quite enough.

The doors to the Captains’ Council room creaked softly as they started to disclose, letting some sunshine in.

Another deep breath.

“It's gonna be fine.”

“Honoured officers of the Gotei 13…” Kyoraku’s voice thundered glee in the heavy silence of the room. “ Let’s all welcome our new comrade, 7th Division’s lieutenant Mira Komamura.”

As everyone’s eyes shifted to the figure standing at the entrance, Iba felt the grasp on his stomach tightening mercilessly and held his breath while turning towards the doors himself.

Wrapped in her brand new shinigami uniform, Mira stepped in the room with a deeply focused expression on her face. Long wavy hair framing it, the golden collar Sajin gave her the day she was adopted shining on her collarbone. She reached the center of the room, where Iba lectured her to stand a few hours earlier.

It was Mira’s turn to inhale -It’s an unspeakable honour to be here.- she said, her voice trembling under the pressure of the moment.

Iba thanked whatever superior entity was holding her from doing something embarrassing.

-I … uhm… - Mira blinked a few times, uncertain , then sighed and all that dignity slipped off like a fine silk cloth just as Iba’s heartbeat when he sensed the inevitable tragedy approaching, helplessly - I was planning on making a funny entrance with a pose but Captain Iba said it wouldn’t have been appropriate so now I don’t really know how to introduce myself ‘cause I am like REALLY nervous, I am sorry.-

-He lied.- Captain Hirako quickly replied -I wanna see the pose.-

Iba’s facepalm sounded more like a full strength slap. Just as Captain Kuchiki’s raising eyebrow.

-I can’t do that on command, it would feel weird now, the moment is lost.- Mira’s expression was completely blank as she spoke those words with an unsettling seriousness.

Captain Hirako though seemed to fully empathise with that feeling and nodded -Yeah, I get that. Was a famous one?-

-Boom baby.- she replied, that serious face still on.

-Emperor’s New Groove?-

-Yep.-

-Mhn, a good one.-

-Indeed.-

Captain Hirako turned towards Tetsuzaemon, matching Mira’s same serious expression -Iba, you robbed me of your lieutenant’s very first Boom Baby in this Council.- and she nodded vigorously.

Iba’s answer came out as a defeated sigh -I am dismayed…-

Captain Soi Fon crossed her arms -Another weirdo, great.- hissed, turning away from that disgraceful circus while Shuhei, Renji, Rukia and even Kyoraku chuckled.

-What’s a Boom baby pose?- Ikkaku asked, arms crossed and evidently confused.

The General Commander clapped his hands to get the attention back to himself - Well, well… we’ve all been through some terrible times, it’s refreshing to see some sparkling playfulness back among our ranks! Am I right, Nanao-chaaaan~? -

Lieutenant Ise pushed her glasses up with a sigh -You mean some more than yours, Captain?-

As Mayuri drifts away, we pivot to Urahara, and this incredibly stupid moment where he senses that Mayuri has been taken out, because "the surrounding spiritual pressure has waned so much that we can sense the fluctuation of a single spiritual pressure far away."

And then we immediately abandon that notion as Urahara has to ask if all the assistant captains have been taken out, when he's running alongside four of them. So much for sensing spiritual pressure! I don't blame Nanao for the side-eye she's giving him.

Also, is Urahara aware that Hisagi got sniped by Lille Barro, considering this talk of "Lieutenants being taken out"? Why didn't they like, go back for him?
